Title: DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE
Post by: bk on June 24, 2006, 12:10:28 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you haven't rained on the notes or my parade, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're raining on someone's parade right now, then they'll be home.

The definition of the word "ubiquitous" can be found practically everywhere (http://www.yourdictionary.com/ahd/u/u0001600.html).

It is Saturday and so of course it is a World of Wisdom work day for me.  And I am working with my nephew, which means I will never be able to get on the computer....

I am intrigued by the trivia question and will try to work on it when I get home....in about 11 hours.

Not sure about the TOD....would love to live in Rome, but I would miss theatre, since I don't speak Italian...hmmmm

For your enjoyment today, a clip of a young lady singing one of her more non-famous songs from one of her more non-famous movies.  She looks great and sounds okay....  In fact, she looks beautiful.  Nobody wore an ugly hairstyle more graciously than Miss Annette Funicello.  ;D

Ironic title for today's column/notes as we had quite the downpour last night. And it may rain on the pride parade.

Good morning!

It rained all afternoon and a good chunk of the evening so everything here is green and soggy.

More thundershowers are in the forecast, but at least the temps for the next few days are supposed to stay in the 80s and out of the 90s (where they've been for the past four or five days).

Yes, there seem to be lots of twists and turns in the trivia contest, but it seems to be doable. I'll have to try some ideas about it later. Probably no time to work on it today.

I haven't decided on all of today's video offerings. I will watch some more SUPERMAN episodes, these from season 4. I would like to watch the animated ANASTASIA off the laserdisc; hadn't seen it in a long time and always found the score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens to be charming. And I still have THE DETECTIVE waiting to be watched.

I know I'm not up for another Fox musical yet. CHARLIE CHAN IN EGYPT might certainly be watched at some point today.

Ahhh, a day off.  DH Richard is off to sing with the shape-noters and, even though it's a beautiful day, I've elected to stay home until I'm expected at the bookmobile.

Well, I suspect I'd love London if I was going to live in another country.

If money were no object (and I've said this before), I'd live in Hawaii. Not a foreign country but a beautiful place where the cost of living is far beyond my means.

TOD:  London,England...right in the heart of Theatreland, probably near Covent Garden or along the Thames Embankment between Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge. Everything I'd need to sustain life would be in a few minutes walk...theatres, movie houses, shops of all kinds, book stores, restaurants, Tesco and Sainsbury, glorious parks, the River, history, awe-inspiring sites and attractions.  If I was never allowed beyond that five mile radius (probably three mile), life would remain sustainable, rich, and full.

Well, Matt, I wish you would take your ninety degree temperatures back.  The Pacific Northwest is expected to move into record-setting temperatures for the next few days.  June is usually mild, temperature-wise; but starting today the thermometer is supposed to climb to around 90, till probably Tuesday.

SW Ohio has been hot this week and brutally humid; now it's a little cooler, but still very humid, which makes climate control tricky.  Too cool for the AC to run, but too humid to have the windows open.  What's a girl to do?

That post reads very strangely.  Despite global warming, I still believe that the ninety degree temperatures are only going to occur during the daytime hours.  The evenings should continue to cool off to the 50s or 60s.

Ugh, a humid and wet day here in NYC. I'm having dinner with friends this evening but as Rodz said, the Pride parade may get rained on. It's a rain or shine event so the march will happen, just without hundreds (or thousands) of cheering spectators (and a handful of protesters in front of Saint Patrick's Cathedral)

And the word of the day is: UBIQUITOUS!

How funny, UBIQUITOUS was the name of uor dance recital this year...
I just came on to mention that last night at my schools Scholarship ceremony I won $1000 for the Jerry D. Melton Dramatic Performance Scholarship. It was a four minute monolouge audition and an interview, and I was one of the three winners out of 15 who auditioned! I am also a Gold Seal AND Crimson Scholar. I also won a Bank of America Award for Applied Arts because I use my art in places outside of school. No money...but a very nice plaque and a real honor.

I would like to thank the Academy...

I will be joining more often to meet everyone soon, I graduate from Hollywood High School on Wendsday!

Last night I travelled to Portland to see little Taylor's dance recital...she and her 3 to 4 year old group danced as ducks to the song Donald Duck! It was cute...all in all there were 2 hours worth of program from kids age 3 to mid teens...and it was all quite fun!

Prior to the recital my mom, sister, brother-in law and myself stopped for dinner at Walter Mitty's. Next door was a little Mediteranean Market so I went in to look around and met the most wonderful old guy running the place. His name is Masur and he is from Iran (moved here 27 years ago). We chatted and he helped me pick out some great Iranian Pop CDs (one of which I am listening to right now). We became fast friends!

During dinner we talked about going back to the market to get some dessert...and my brother-in-law started spouting off about how Iran is our enemy blah, blah, blah...terroritsts...blah, blah, blah...and missles..blah, blah blah...my sister got mad at him and apoligized to me.

I really am beginning to thing that my brother-in-law has begun to flip his lid!

We did go back to the market, by the way, and I bought some wonderful snacky cake things...not too sweet either, just right! And introduced Mosur to my mom and sister....Doug did not venture in except to tell us it was time to leave.  :P

You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but I guess you can't pick your relatives. LOL!

BK, I saw EARLY SUMMER last year at the Ozu film fest in Portland...I enjoyed it very much.

Have you picked up Ozu's END OF SUMMER (1961) (AKA Early Autumn).

I didn't think it was quite as good as the other Ozu's I saw, but it is in color and stars a truck load of familiar Toho performers who you will recognize from assorted Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra movies which made it a lot of fun more me!

Hiya, gang.

I arrived at my sistr Rik's at 10:30 last night - just kept driving until it seemed silly to waste $50 on a room when all I had left was three, nope, two, nope one more hour of driving. The dawg was thrilled to see me. And the workmen are STILL working on the kitchen remodel after 6 weeks. You know that movie, THE MONEY PIT? Well, it's true. Two more weeks... yeah, two more weeks...

Rikki is downtown for some meeting - she stayed over night. i took the dawg out for a nice hour-long walk in the park - she has been locked outside every day while the workmen are here. She's locked out again, right now, to keep her off the cement for the wood flooring. Poor pup.

Welcome to our new Adrianna Patti. Any relation to Adelina Patti, one of the most celebrated singers of the early 1900's? Or of HER relative, Patti LuPone? Or the Christian pop star, Sandi Patti?

I'm gearing up for this interview on Tuesday. I spoke with a former Artistic Director of said company a couple of days ago. The last Artistic Director of said company apparently came in last October and lasted until March... hmmmm... Well, you KNOW I'll be interviewing THEM as much as they are interviewing me. Difficult doesn't mean impossible - but it gives one pause. I must say, I've seen some of the shows in years past, and the quality was WAY up there. And the production budget is tantalizing, the salary would be the highest I ever had, plus REAL good bennies. More after I meet with them on Tuesday...

As for the Topic of The Day...

Australia - I've only been to Surfer's Paradise (Gold Coast), Melbourne and Sydney, and I'd take any or all of them.  A nice beach bungalow in Surfer's Paradise.  One of the suites in The Crown in Melbourne overlooking the Yarra River, and maybe a place in DR Tomovoz's neck of the woods.  Then a small flat somewhere near the Harbor Bridge, Botanic Gardens and Opera House.

Otherwise...

A place in The Village here in New York City, and a penthouse on Central Park West.

And I actually wouldn't mind living back in Richmond, preferably in one of those wonderful old houses along Monument Avenue, or one on the James River.

I would like to live in England and spend time getting to know my relatives there.  I would recapture my English accent (the one I grew up with thanks to my mother) eat fruitcake with marzipan, humbugs, & custard pie to my hearts content.  I would find & explore all the family homes and burial sites.  Then I would travel to Whales and find where my grandfather is buried in his pauper’s grave.

I think it would be wonderful to live in the Italian country side and learn the beautiful language.

DR Rodzinski - I, too, spent a lot of time reading the Peanuts fan sites last night.  Charles M. Shulz was an Army buddy of my 6th grade homeroom teacher. Mr Rainey used to tell us stories about him all the time. And of course there are the great peanuts statues around St. Paul. I have some photos of them at home, I'll try to remember to post one or two when I get back

When I lived in Santa Rosa back in the early Seventies, you could not ignore Mr. Shulz.  He lived there, had his studio there, and owned the ice arena there.  I believe his museum in now in Santa Rosa.

The Pacific Northwest is expected to move into record-setting temperatures for the next few days.  June is usually mild, temperature-wise; but starting today the thermometer is suppsed to climb to around 90, till probably Tuesday.

I need to organize my clothes for our upcoming trip & then take some jeans to be shortened.  I decided to have them properly hemmed for the cruise instead of just rolling them up.

It’s difficult to pack for Alaska when we are experiencing heat waves in the Northwest.  I will also need to pack more clothes for the changes in temperatures.  The average temps for Alaska are 60-63 degrees with possible rain  and it should be very cold when we go through the glaciers.

Cillaliz -I wasn’t thinking of living permanently in the other countries, just long enough.  I love where we are.  Sometimes we talk about exploring some of the towns in New Mexico & moving there, a state Keith likes and I have yet to see.

I’m also glad Bootsie is safe.

It is usually not too bad, temperature-wise in Glacier Bay.  Just make sure that you have a jacket, in case the wind is blowing.  You are lucky that you are going this year, while there are still glaciers to be seen.

Last night I travelled to Portland to see little Taylor's dance recital...she and her 3 to 4 year old group danced as ducks to the song Donald Duck! It was cute...all in all there were 2 hours worth of program from kids age 3 to mid teens...and it was all quite fun!

Well, I'm off to work, but later today, I'm ushering for another dance recital (after ushering for one last week).  This group (Debbi's Dance) dressess most of their girls in not age-appropriate costumes :o and teaches them to dance like they're going to become Vegas showgirls!  AND they're they only dance school that charges to go to their recitals...but people do go. ::) At least I don't have to pay.

DR Jane and Ginny's Mother -- Be sure to take along several of those disposable plastic rain ponchos.  They usually sell for around $1.50 each, and they come in a package about the size of a cigarette pack, so they are easy to pack.  They can be reused, but good luck trying to fold them back up into their little pouch again.  They saved a lot of us from becoming drowned rats in the Falkland Islands, when a squall moved in, and the cruise ship decided to suspend tender service until the sqaull passed (about two hours).

I must say, I do have a craving for donuts right now.  I ate some cucumber sushi so I haven't eaten very many calories, and I suppose I could have a couple of donuts and call it a day.  It hates when I call it a day, but I get a perverse kick out of it.  Besides, why should I call it a cucumber or a week or a firefly?

We got the last of the computer weirdnesses fixed - all my archived sent/received AOL mail is now where it should be.  Hoo and ray.  Hopefully, everything will work smoothly from now on, and Vinnie is coming over and we're going to upgrade my backup program so that the backup drive will be bootable.  Then, instead of taking five hours to reinstall, it will take a half-hour.  That's what I'M talkin' about.

They, for Narnia, the movie, supposedly auditioned 2000 kids! Not 1999 or 2003, mind you! No!

2000 kids!

WHO CARES? Right?

Does it mean that they could have done a better job because only one (the younger girl) showed real talent to me! The other ones are so wooden and bland that i think they should have auditioned 2000 more! Ah!

They must think we're so stupid that we all fall for NUMBERS!

This painting took 10 years to be finished: wow, it sure is a masterpiece!!

In the past, I used to read all those figures about Disney animated features; 5000 pencils, 15 0000 cels, 20 500 hours, 350 artists!....

So silly!

Hello, everybody!
Hope you're all feeling good!

Hello, all!  And welcome, DR Adrianna Patti.

My youngest brother deserves a big gold star on his forehead.  This morning, while sitting at my dad's bedside, he started rambling about food, and asked my dad what he'd would love to eat.  Turns out, my dad felt some fresh fish baked with a bit of butter would please him to a T.  So, tomorrow, my brother's bringing him from home some baked fish.  I would never have thought of using such psychology to get him to eat something, but today we managed to get at least a sampling of all three meals today.  After my brother and I got back from lunch, he disappeared for a smoke and returned to the hospital room with an ice cream bar.  My dad ate the whole thing!  This is a very good sign, I believe.

So, around 6:00, one of my dad's coofee buddies arrived to visit, and I got to leave.  I've got my BABES edits to work on tonight, and my Shakespeare book to read.

If I could live anywhere but New York, it would be London.

A floop musical! A floop play!
When do we eat?!

In the "let me laugh" department!!:

Turkish TV Boots Piglet

Piglet may have a pal in Winnie-the-Pooh, but he has no friend in the state-owned Turkish television network TRT, Agence France-Presse reported, citing accounts in the Turkish press. The network, an arm of the government, has banned the Walt Disney cartoon "Winnie the Pooh" because Piglet is a pig; Muslims regard pigs as unclean, and Islam prohibits the consumption of pork. TRT officials were not immediately available for comment, but "Winnie the Pooh" has been seen on other television channels in Turkey, and the videos are readily available in stores. Employees of TRT have recently complained of increasing government intervention in TRT policy, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party are under fire for seeking to raise the profile of Islam in predominantly Muslim but strictly secular Turkey.

I just got back from a holiday bbq at my sister's place.  I was quite tired when i went this morning. But i didn't feel tired when i just got home. BUt now i do.

I didn't actually do much except eat, set up and take out/put a few things in the fridge. And watch little megan for much of the day.

But I have a bit of a cold (thanks to my sis and megan) and my throat is now feeling a bit itchy. I took an advil sinus and cold tablet this morning when i left.

Good vibes to DRs Elmore and TCB. ~~~~~~~~~

Read in today's paper:

New York!

Police go undercover to catch lewd passengers.

A police sting operation netted 13 subway flashers and gropers. Tha authorities annouced the results of the two-day sting, called Operation Exposure, which was conducted in late May. But a crackdown was continuing. It was prompted by increased harassment complaints by female riders, said James Hall, chief of the New York Police Department Transit Bureau.

In a number of cases, women have dealt with the inappropriate behavior on their own, taking cellphones pictures of men they said had harassed them and posting the photos on the Internet.

Jose!!!!!

Where else on the Internet would you read this? Nowhere, that's where!

It is usually not too bad, temperature-wise in Glacier Bay.  Just make sure that you have a jacket, in case the wind is blowing.  You are lucky that you are going this year, while there are still glaciers to be seen.

I was there in 1984 the last week in May or maybe the first week in June.  I think I wore a hooded sweatshirt and t-shirt with a rubber rain coat and was plenty warn.  I would recommend layers.

Cillaliz -I wasn’t thinking of living permanently in the other countries, just long enough.  I love where we are.  Sometimes we talk about exploring some of the towns in New Mexico & moving there, a state Keith likes and I have yet to see.

I’m also glad Bootsie is safe.

Oh, I have often thought about living places for a period of time, I'm just going through a phase where I don't want to be anywhere else.

DR Jane - while I was shopping at a Coldwater Creek store in Illinois, my mother got to talking about her upcoming cruise with one of the clerks, who used to live in Alaska.  She recommended gloves, which my mom had not thought of, since her trip is in early September.

I agree with that one. I forgot we had gloves and I wore them in Glacier Bay

I had a nice day at the lake.  I took a TON of photos and then got about 45 minutes into my drive home when I realized I left my camera at the lake. I decided to go back for it, so my dad said he'd start driving from that end and we'd meet wherever we met.   I was a bit comcerned we might miss each other, but we didn't. He saved me a bunch of time and I have the camera.  I got back later than I planned (duh) and had to run to Petco to get kitten supplies and restock Callie's favorite treats so I won't do anything with the photos until tomorrow.

In more somber news...

I went out a bit earlier to get some ice cream from the little store on the corner... When I stepped outside, I noticed lots of police lights flashing about two blocks up.  It turns out that there's a fire in one of the apartment buildings.  From what people were saying, it started on the second floor, and the firemen had just discovered that it had reached the fourth floor.  -I also saw four ambulances drive away, and a couple more drive up to the scene.

Truly a bit too close to home.  I've been checking the local news to see if there's any official report, but nothing has come across yet.  I hope that everyone is safe and out of harm's way.

Then I watched AIR FORCE ONE on Showtime-HD. I hadn't seen the movie in awhile and never in high definition, so since I've always found it a fun action movie, I watched it.

Frankly, I suspect my standard DVD upconverted to high definition resolution will look just as good as this broadcast looked. I didn't find it any sharper or more detailed.

(Now, I caught a bit of OCEANS TWELVE on HBO-HD last night, and it was clearly sharper and more deeply colorful than the standard definition DVD I had watched of the film.)

I switched the channel to ABC-HD and caught the last five minutes of A BUG'S LIFE. ABC was broadcasting it in high definition, and was it ever gorgeous! Good lord, was it ever eye-popping!

I haven't watched this film in a long time, so I've added it to the DVD queue I have waiting for a spin on the DVD player.

Warning:  Usher's Rant!

I got to the theater for the dance recital at 5:30 and didn't leave until about 10:00 (the show probably finished at about 9:40 or so).  But in all the years that I've ushered, I don't recall seeing more trash left in and around the seats...ever!  Even the Warren Miller (http://www.warrenmiller.com/) movie crowd was neater!  And I was just on the orchestra level.  Two people snuck in beer cups!  The center was selling beer and wine and cookies and candies, but bottled water is the ONLY thing that's allowed in the theater.   There were almost a dozen bottles of water just left on the floor, a whole bunch of programs, a crumbled cookie (again, NOT allowed) and a couple of flowers that were probably purchased to be given to children in the show.  And during the show, the kids (and several of the adults) were running all around and barging in and out of the theater in the middle of the numbers!  Don't these people know anything about theater etiquette??  Evidently not.

 :P is what I say.

End of rant. :)

Some shows like The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie and Highway to Heaven I still enjoy. Comedies like M*A*S*H, Cosby, Three's Company, Cheers, Frasier and others still have that element to entertain and be engaging. Some of the comedies today, IMHO, are stale.

Some of the comedies today do not know how to write witty dialogue and good jokes but rely on plot gimmicks to be funny. It is like the writing of the programs is rushed and not allowed to take a personality of their own.  IMHO, I feel some the shows from the 1980s and earlier are the best for they allowed for creative writing. You dont see that in today's comedies. Even the BBC does not have the quality comedies they once had.

Maybe it is me and I am being overly critical,  but on the network programs today, the qaulity wirting on programs is spotty at best. Perhaps it is laziness or the fragmentation of the medium but a lot of telly shows, IMHO, are mediocre at best.

My mom was born and raised in the southern part and all of her family is still there.  Her brother lives in the house that she grew up in.  My dad's mother was of German descent and his dad's family was from Ireland.  I don't remember exactly but either my dad's father or grandfather was born in England when his (whichever) parents were travelling from Ireland to the US.  So I'm 3/4 German and 1/4 Irish, but I have the Irish name...and Patrick is my middle name. :)

That is true... Look at NBC - that network is a mess. At one time they were on top of the heap and now Fox is beating the tar out of them. Days may improve with new writers. Passions is horrid. I watched it once and I felt insulted.

I like shows taht make me think and I love a witty conversation and good actors that can pull it off. Acting talent out there is also hit and miss. However they have their fans.

A freind of mine has MASH on DVD and tape and she recently loaned me a copy. It was fun watching that show and it has truly stood the test of time. Bruce has hardly aged a day since he was on!

I love strong character driven stories whether it is a drama, soap, comedy or a movie. I believe strong characters, male or female, allow you to experience their feelings and where the story is going. A good writer can convey that in the writing and it supported by strong acting.
