Post by: bk on December 10, 2003, 12:02:43 AM
Well, you've sped through the notes and you know what to do, so speed away in your Speedos whilst keeping your libidos in check or, at the very least, in Czech.

Good morning all!  We finely warmed up -- It's 66 degrees right now at 6:39 AM. YAY.  The bad part is we have another front (never a back) coming.  It will rain this afternoon and turn cooler (ie COLD) by tonight and the rest of the week. :( :'(

Talk to ya'll tonight when I get home.

Be safe and happy, posters and lurkers.

Wow...only two posts...come ON, we can do better than THIS!

MBarnum: OOOOOOOOOOH, Happy happy birthday! Be happy, don't be blue! Happy happy birthday, may all your dreams come truuuuuuue!

BK: Tell us a story, please?

Today is the last day of rehearsal before our choir concert. I'm probably going to be at school for a while...hmpf. Hopefully the internet will be up when I get home.

Kitty is crying at the door, so I must go. Hope you all have LOVELY days, especially YOU, MBarnum!

I have just found out of the death of someone very close to me.

This person was always there for me when I was frazzled or going crazy. They'd straighten me out in an instant, never being too harsh or hot headed. I saw this person almost every day of my life, and they've never failed to make me happy for the rest of the day.

So, with deep sorrow, I'd like to say goodbye to my hair straightener.

*sob*

Didn't Evelyn Woods become famous because JFK announced he was a graduate or her speed reading course.

Noel---
Years ago performers who missed performances regularly were fired.  That's not the case today.  Look at Nathan and Matthew in THE PRODUCERS where by the end of their initial run the average was one out of eight performances when they would both appear.  Look at Kristen Chenowith who is taking a week off in May to do CANDIDE with the N Y Philharmonic.  When I bought my tickets to NOISES OFF there was a list at the box office of dates Patti LuPone would not be appearing.  And on Donald's show he said Hunter Foster was out of LITTLE SHOP the night he saw it.  While some stars like Harvey Fierstein make it a point not to miss a performance, the sad fact today is that almost any time you go to the theatre --- at least for a musical --- you're likely to find an understudy or two going on.

DR WEL pretty much summarized what I meant.  I am usually pretty lucky. But if you have your heart set on seeing a certain performer (usually the star), then just be aware that it is POSSIBLE that they won't be there when you go.

Happy Birthday to DR MBarnum!!!!!!

And for DR Andrea: If you want to go to the Met, then make sure you do!  But re: broadway prices, unless you happen to do the lottery, chances are your tickets will not be cheap.  Maybe check out standing room only tickets (and then if there are empty seats you can move down).  Tickets will probably cost at least $50 US (and that is for seats in the balcony).  Just remember how much DR Emily loves theatre and encourage her to go alone (if you guys decide not to go).  But if you can you should think about it. To me, seeing a Broadway show has a certain magic to it. And if you've never been, I think you might be surprised at much you like it.

I'm quite partial to Reeces Peanut Butter Holiday, Trees, Pumpkins, Hearts and Eggs

I remember the short infomercials on TV about Evelyn Wood speed reading, and I was always amazed how they would wiggle their fingers down pages almost as quick as you could slide you own finger down a page, and know exactly what was on it. I also remember seeing some of their students appear on shows like The Tonight Show and have a book selected at random, give them a minute to do their thing, and then be quizzed on the book afterward. It was always an amazing demonstration.

For Ask BK Day: Did you see the list of DVD awards your group presented and did any strike you as surprising? For me, I was most surprised that the documentary on the WEST SIDE STORY Special Edition beat out the making-of features on things like LORD OF THE RINGS: Extended Edition or THE ALIEN QUADRILOGY which were much more extensive and completist documentaries about those respective films.

DR Diane, you and I have the same taste. I LOVE the times of year that Reece's puts out their specialty candies in different shapes. Somehow to me, the Eggs are the best, just the right combination of chocolate and peanut butter. Boy, can I get sick wolfing down packs of those!

Thanks, I exercise a lot during the summer. But since then I have been eating too much and not exercising.

I'm doing the Windsor pilates video. Has anyone ever heard of this? I've had it for months. But last time I started it, I was having stomach problems. And it really stretches your stomach muscles. So I had to stop.

Right now though I'm having trouble finding a comfortable mat to work on. Anyone else exercise at home? What do you use?

Dear esteemed, swift, fleet, speedy, supersonic BK --

Is the very real, actual house that Benjamin really, actually lived in still standing?  I assume the area south of Wilshire and west of Fairfax?  A posted snapshot sometime here, for all us DRs to peruse I'm sure would be most enjoyed.

Of course we would speed-see it, so it would only take about 1/10 of a second.

In fact, I typed this so fast, that during the last part of this sentence my body is already out in the kitchen getting some more coffee...

     Whooooooshh ......

Happy Birthday, DR MBarnum!

Tom from Oz - Great SINGING NUN photo. Reminds me of a Debbie Reynolds story... I really admire her - aside from SINGING IN THE RAIN and all the other terrific films she's done, I admire her as a Survivor. She just keeps going, no matter what. (She was TOTALLY broke a number of years ago. I don't know if it's true, but I've heard she lived out of her car for for a while.)
A couple of years ago I wrote a Showtime film that she was in (she was wonderful - got an Emmy nomination) and we had a few really good talks about life, men, bad choices, etc. I have a lovely photo of the two of us, she in a bathrobe, sitting on the porch of a house where we were shooting - but I have no scanner, so you'll just have to take my word for how cute it is. Anyway, the point of all this is to relate the ultimate show business moment. There was one endless day shooting in a high school football field where Debbie was supposed to be watching in the stands as her grandson played football. The extras sitting around her were bored and tired and she was probably exhausted. I was doing something in another part of the field when I heard applause and laughter. Went over and discovered that between takes, Debbie would stand up, turn around and start doing her nightclub act for the extras! She was doing imitations, shtick, you name it. And, of course, the thoroughly intimidated AD was afraid to interrupt her, so he'd wait for her to finish whatever she was doing before saying, "We're ready, Miss Reynolds." Then she'd sit down, do her scene. The minute the director yelled "Cut!" she'd turn around, stand up and continue her act for the extras. That's a performer!

Regarding "Average Joe" that was discussed yesterday, I heard from two sources, that she has been seeing the obnoxious Zach since the show completed taping.  The whole thing is such a farce.  Adam is lucky he wasn't picked.  At least he has been able to move on with his life and, according to what he said on the Today show yesterday, is seeing someone. Being the nice person he appeared to be, I'm sure he's much better off since I'm sure that had he been the one picked, it would not have led to any lasting relationship anyway.  The trip he would have won, he can afford to do on his own $.

We saw Simon (not the dead one) and Garfunkle at the Meadowlands Sunday night.  A great show for those of us at a certain age.  Garfunkle's voice is not quite as good as it used to be, but that didn't affect their overall performance as a duo.  The Everly Brothers also appeared mid-show for several songs.

I'm wondering if most of these shows aren't scams, since they don't let the couples see each other for many months between taping and the show airing.

She was on Jay Leno last night with Jason (the guy she chose). And they seemed very happy. Although a few things she said made me cringe.

Hey would you mind emailing me what those sources are. I am very curious. THANK YOU.

Great Debbie Reynolds story, DR Panni, and sounds exactly like the Debbie I met during her run in IRENE on Broadway. I can't say enough about her professionalism, the warmth she exudes meeting not only fans but also reporters (I was interviewing her for the newspaper syndicate I was writing for part time), and her dedication to her craft. And she had wonderful stories to tell about her working experiences, but back then, she was more guarded about saying anything negative since people like Gene Kelly were still alive. I'd LOVE to have a chance to talk to her now that so many of the people she worked with are no longer with us and she could be free to talk "out of school," so to speak.

I love Jose.  More on which later.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement re: seeing shows alone.  I'll definitely consider it - and it will definitely be easier than convincing Andrea to part with her cash.  Although I also see where she is coming from.  I mean... I understand the CONCEPT of living within one's means... :D

Yesterday was my mini-depression-angry-at-the-world day. But now it is over.  Thank God.

Maya I am going to need a decision from you on the exact dates you will be in NY soon so I can make arrangements for something you will learn about (and thrill to) later.  There is a deadline chica. ;)

Ha ha ha. That is the best line of the day. Sorry Andrea!

I know some people feel awkward about doing such things alone. And believe me DR Emily, I totally get it. I rarely (if ever) go to the theatre alone here. But NYC isn't the same. Trust me, you won't feel strange. And this way you won't have to feel guilty.

The real Singing Nun appears on the Ed Sullivan Christmas DVD.

To our future NY visitors:

Discount tickets for most Broadway shows are available if you know where to look.  If you want to take your chances on the day of the show there's always TKTS.  Advance discount tickets (usually 35%-50% off) to many shows are available on several websites including Theatermania.Com and Playbill.Com.  These are usually only $5-$15 more than at TKTS and you have the advantage of ordering them in advance.  Most shows have about 90% of the house at top price with only the last couple of rows in the balcony at a lower price.  Standing Room is only sold day of the performance if all seats are sold out.

DR JRand53, I brought in to work the cd soundtrack to Pakheeza that you sent to me awhile back which I am listening to at this very moment. I can't get enough of "Chalte Chalte"! My co-workers don't quite know what to make of it all! LOL! I also brought in my soundtrack to ANAND, which has some very nice songs on it as well.

DR MusicGuy, my freelance writing consists mostly of interviewing vintage B movie actors and actresses. If you pick up the current issue of Scarlet Street you will see two interviews that I conducted with two 1960s sword and sandal actors...Mark Forest and Reg Lewis. I should have several interviews published this year in Filmfax, Classic Images, and Films of the Golden Age, and maybe a few more in Scarlet Street, I hope. It is a lot of fun and I have met some very nice people through the interviews...some of my interviewees have actually become very good friends I am pleased to say. Sadly a couple of my interviewees passed away this year (Beth Marion and Gordon Mitchell). Anyway, it has always been a dream of mine to be able to do this and now I am doing it!

And what did Melana  say that made you cringe Jennifer?!

Maybe cringe is the wrong word. It's more like it made me sick! :)

I was really disappointed with the finale.  But I also hated how the couple came across on Leno.  She did not let him get a word in.

There were two things she said that bugged me (and btw, I don't think they've been able to see each other for 7 months).

1.  She acted like she was wonderful for choosing Jason (the pretty-boy) claiming, "i didn't pick adam even though he was rich".  She made herself seem like a saint. Although she completely neglected to realize that her actions defeated the whole purpose of the show.  Oh well, if she'd rather date the hunk, with no prospects, fine.  But she sounded so dumb.

2. Jay Leno asked her what her type of guy was and she basically said that she always dated guys that looked exactly like Jason.

Then why did she spend so much time trying to convince everyone that she wanted charm and personality????

They seemed all happy. But who knows.

I just read that Encore's NEW MOON will be recorded.  I was not particularly looking forward to this show but it turned out to be the highlight of last season's Encores, so the recording should be excellent.

I would definitely recommend the discount codes (there are so many of them, PBOL, hitshowlist). But I would also to go to the visitor's bureau (in Times Square beside McDonalds) and go to the middle desk and ask for the two-fer discount coupons. Although I'm sure they won't have Wicked.

Btw, DR Emily: If you guys don't have much money why don't you ask for theatre tickets for Christmas (or the cash to buy the tickets).

I bought the Decca Broadway NEW MOON that was released last year, and I loved every single track on it. All of those Decca Broadway operettas were much better than I thought they would be. One might not be able to sit through the silly stories nowadays, but the music is as stirring and lovely as it ever was if you've got the right voices singing it.

DR NOEL - although I am NOT a promotions person - most of the BIG search Engines EXCITE and YAHOO, have "Theatre" groups that you can access from their main pages....a little bit of searching will take you to the perfect pages and you can add your links...

A Google search for "theatre" and "musical" pages will lead you to several places where you can put your link.  It might take awhile for some people to find you, but I bet you get some response for your efforts!

NEW MOON was one case where Encore's usual slashing of the book helped instead of hurting.  I saw a video of NYCO's production from the late 80s and found it very hard to sit through with the complete book.

By the way, WONDERFUL TOWN is one of the few books that had only minor trims.  In some cases (TENDERLOIN and BLOOMER GIRLS come instantly to mind) so much book was lost that it made the plot difficult to follow.  This was not the case with NEW MOON where dated comedy was toned down or eliminated while enough of the main plot remained that it was still easy to know what was going on.

I had two dreams last night about being back in the classroom as a teacher, and that is NOT where I wanted to be. This is what I would do.  Write up a press release and send it to PBOL, broadway.com, talkinbroadway and any other big theatre website you can think of.

See if Ken Mandelbaum would like a copy (maybe he'd write about it).

Write an article about making the cd and the wedding.  Have it printed on one of the theatre sites.

Email james marino at broadwaystars and ask him if he'll post a link to it.

See if you can write something also at broadwayworld, or theatremania.  Just get the info out to as many places as you can.

And btw <sob> maybe you can come up with a HHW Canadian cd price (since there are only 1 or 2 who might want the cd).  Email me please.

I wonder if there is some place in NYC where you could sell copies. What about Footlight?  Good luck. Btw, I love stuff like this, so if you need more ideas email me.

Another thing that may have influenced my mood is that it has been raining here since early morning. There have been periods where it will stop briefly, but then it will start up again, and it's just very gray and dismal. Why is it that summer showers can be so pleasant, but to rain on a late fall/early winter's day is just depressing?

I think we should have a rule here at HainesHisWay.com that only one Dear Reader be allowed to be in a nasty mood at any one time.

When the designated nasty-mooded Dear Reader is done being nasty, then he/she can vacate his/her throne of nastiness and make way for whomever is next in line.

This will allow us to keep nastiness at acceptable levels at all times.  Since our rule here about groaning works quite well, I thought we might consider adopting this second rule.

Oh yes.  Since this is his site, Dear BK, of course, can be allowed a nasty mood at any time he likes.

Ron --  Have you thought about possibly calling your doctor just to see what he thinks your symptoms might mean?

I actually took the Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Course back when I was still in college (and Evelyn was still alive).  The amazing thing is that the course really does work, but you have to continually use the skill or it is easily lost.  When I was really good at it (the reading, Tom) it was very helpful for studying textbooks and retaining what I read.  Unfortunately, I could never get to the point where I used it for my enjoyment reading.  I like to read in bed, and that course is really designed for people to use in a sitting position.  After a while, I just stopped practicing it every day, and within a few weeks I lost the knack.  I could probably retrain myself, but the only reading I do now is for pleasure, so what would be the point?  Still it is a valuable tool that all kids should learn at an early age.

So what is the postage? $2?

For a cd (assuming it's packed in a cd pack) I believe there are no forms. That is too small. But even if it were sent as a small package, you would just have to write 3 words on a little green slip (saying cd, checking off the gift box and putting the value). Presto it's easy.  How about you email me a price preferably not more than a couple of dollars (use me as a test sample). And see how much trouble it is.  It shouldn't be this hard to get a cd, should it? :(

Depends when it's on. If I have something else at the same time, I might not watch. They really aggravated me with the finale, so I'm not sure.  Yeah, the new woman seemed really peeved. Noel - there is a small green card that is a LOT like the Certified Mail card that you have to fill out and declare what is in the package and if it is a gift or merchandise and the value....how you do that I think determines if there is a charge at the other end.

You can get the cards at the post office, but you have to stand in line to get it stamped and signed and all.

THanks for asking DR Diane. There were about 45 people there, but really only one of them seemed to be interested in the same role I was going for, Sipos. I have worked with this actor before, and his singing is very pitchy and inconsistent though he's certainly a good enough actor to pull it off (though in the reading, I didn't think much of his delivery). The dance part of the audition wasn't very challenging, just four sets of 8, but he didn't get on the correct foot for the turns and screwed them up. Of course, the principals don't do much dancing in SHE LOVES ME, so I suspect the director didn't care about that. I made no mistakes in my audition that I'm aware of, but as we all know, often it's the look that gets the person a role rather than talent or audition acumen, so we'll have to wait and see. We were told we'd be called by Thursday if we're to offered anything. No call for me thus far.

The radio is currently playing the theme from "55 Days At Bejing". A #1 hit here in 1963 but I don't think anywhere else. Knowing someone 'above the line' on Average Joe, I can say that A GREAT DEAL of what you saw on screen was GREATLY MANIPULATED by the production team (much more than is considered the 'norm' on these types of shows). I checked out a couple of shows but ultimately tuned out because I resented all the hokey/ staged/fake nonsense going-on... it became - for me - just amateur-hour TV.

How come no one has mentioned Mary Tyler Moore walking-out on her show in previews??

Sources tell me the letter written by Simon spoke the truth-- but was extremely harsh.

I'm also told that MTM had an earpiece for line prompts.

Was MTM over reacting... or had a knee-jerk reaction (and didn't consider her cast & crew)?

Simon has a history of these sorts of reactions... but could he have handled this with a bit more... tact?

Last Post (because I have to keep an even pace in MY edit bay with BK in HIS bay):

My wife and I worked w/Debbie Reynolds on two different projects... and both of us walked away with similar impressions:

She's the ultimate old-school PRO.

Prompt. Courteous. Hits her marks and knows her lines. Knows how to have fun, but comes to get the job done-- it would take a team of horses to keep her from coming to work (I saw her do two shows one night with a blinding headache and a nasty head cold-- yet she never let-on to the audience, or let it effect her performance).

She's been bankrupt twice in her life, but has never complained about it, and soldiered-on. Sad that she is now forced to auction a bunch of her hollywood movie prop collection...

Good afternoon.

I decided to head back home between shows.  This way I can mope here at home - and be online - instead of moping in the green room at the theatre for a few hours.  Good noon show today, and we had some very good questions and comments at the talkback afterwards.  There seemed to be a lot of already-dedicated-to-the-theatre high school students in the audience today.  The technical questions were fun to answer.

I'm feeling better today.  Still "something" in the air, but I'm hoping it gets straightened out soon enough.  My back is better... just a little tight and sore, and I'm hoping it will work itself out by the end of the day.  But no more sharp pains every time I turn my torso.  *I'm soooo happy I invested in a "drum throne" last year to use for my piano bench.  So comfortable, adjustable, and it has back support!

And DR Emily, I love you too!   ;D  -And you have mail.

Well... I've read today's posts, but I still have to read-read yesterday's posts.

Oh, and as for Evelyn Wood.. My high school actually offered speed-reading during my sophomore year.  It was a very neat class.  It was part of our English class, and we would go into the reading lab about once a week.  There were these little machines that had this bar that would move down the page, and you could control the speed.  It really worked!  And when I'm in a major reading mode, it does come back to me, and I actually do remember and comprehend everything.  *And a lot of "it" depends upon the width of a standard book and/or newspaper column - so with internet postings, it's a little difficult since the span is wider than normal.

-Or something like that...

Well, time to mope around some more... Although, actually, I have a couple of things to take care of while I'm back home...  Later.

Oh, and a quick "response" in regards to actors being out of shows...

Yes, there are some people who are "infamous" for being out of shows.  Taking personal days just because they know there is an understudy or swing who can step in for them.  BUT for the most part, at least in my experience, most actors want to be on that stage for each and every single performance.  One of the problems we deal with today with all the "star casting" is that because they are stars, they have other commitments and other offers to consider and accept.  As for Mssrs. Lane and Broderick being out of The Producers... Both of them were dealing with "vocal issues" - especially Mr. Lane.  Also, people get sick.  Working in a theatre is indeed a "closed environment" - if one person gets sick, someone else is bound to get sick too..  Yes, a person can be the proverbial trouper, but if that trouper ends up passing on his/her cold/flu/infection/ailment to the rest of the cast...  This is especially true during cold/flu season - which we're in right now.  Producers can't afford to have half their ensemble out with the same cold - and I've been in situations where half the cast had picked up the "sniffles".  And, for me at least, I'd rather see a healthy, happy actor on stage, rather than some sick star - I'd sit (and I have sat) there wondering the whole time if the "star" was going to make it through the whole show... or even just the act... or even just through the song.. the high note.

*My big disclaimer:  I go to see a show to see a show.  I don't go to see stars.  If a show is good, a show is good.  Yes, performances and performers do make a difference, but overall, I believe a good, solid show is only enhanced by a good actor.  -Of course, a bad actor can totally kill a show - and there are many examples of that happening.  If I want to see a "star", I go to a concert or a cabaret.

-Well, that was a ramble... I'll probably edit after I get back from tonight's show.. ;)

I want Mint M&M's... although I would settle for MINT SMARTIES (oh yum):

I'm sorry, Jennifer, I was just giving you a bad time.  However, if they haven't gotten around to selling Peanut Butter M&Ms in Canada, they probably don't have the mint flavor there either.

Well they might have them at Walmart or other stores with lots of candy.

Everytime I look at the pharmacy they have all kinds of new flavors of old chocolate. I just have not seen the M+Ms. But they could be there :)

Hey you can't say this and leave us :)

I need to know more. PLEASE.

These are customs declaration forms and they must be attached to packages being mailed overseas.  In the U.S., you can fill out the green form and the attached white detachable form and put them on a package -- undetached -- and put the package into a mailbox IF you have the correct postage and the package does not exceed 16 oz.    I found this out when talking to our mailman here at work -- he said as long as I didn't detach the white portion of the declaration form, the post office would process the package as if I had taken it to a window.

It's probably best, however, to wrap a rubber band around the package and the white section (which does not adhere to the package) so that it does not detach.

I personally really like jello lite with whipped topping.

Six days from now, I shall be packed and ready to head out to SFO for my flight to South Carolina and a Home For the Holidays two weeks!

While it seems like it's all I can do to remain patient through each day, the days just fly by without warning.

I admit there's a degree of stress related to this impending travel, and I've tried to alleviate as much as possible of this, but it's still there.

Just thinking about it gives me a small attack of nerves and it's a whole week away!

OMG, amazon.ca cracks me up!  DR Emily please tell me that it's not just me that has these problems.

So yesterday I had sent an email asking why the Wicked cd was now listed at 5-7 weeks (they said they didn't know the release date, even though i had told them it was next tuesday). Anyhow the person was nice and said they would ship the rest of my order.

Now why is it when they do this, they never check their work. I was supposed to have free shipping and for some reason since they split the order my shipping was now $16.50 (for a $30 order :) )

So I emailed them again and they fixed it. But somehow when they split the order the price got increased by $1 (with the taxes ...).

So I get the most hilarious email just now saying that the problem was a result of both "human and technical errors" and "in no way did we intend for this to happen".  Ha. Good one. I love this line.  Oy.

Sometimes I wonder who they hire at these places. This happens EVERY TIME they split my order. You'd think that they would show these people how to check their work :)

Okay rant over. Sorry. I just thought the note was funny.

Okay I"m off now.  DR Noel I sent you a message/payment by paypal. I hope you got it. Yeah, I'm gonna hear Noel and Joy sing soon!

In those years of three nominees, I always felt there were other possible candidates, but they didn't get nominations for whatever reason.

And Hey!  Don't knock "Ave Satani"!  It was an original song in a highly successful film.  They don't always have to be chartbusters to be considered best of the year!

The MTM situation was discussed the day it happened.  If I'm not mistaken, a link to the Michael Reidel column was posted.  I'm sure when it makes the news again (like when her replacement is announced) it will be the subject of discussion.  And yes she was being fed her lines through an earpiece.

Re stars missing performances: A semi-name with a major role on Broadway took two weeks off to do a show at Encores.  I stopped by the box office of her theatre to ask who was doing the role that week and was told she would not be out of the show (even though I had just seen her in the Encores matinee and knew she would be in the show at night).

When Gwen Verdon had surgery during CHICAGO she was replaced by Liza but Liza got no billing, program credit, etc. , just the standard understudy announcement.  Word got out and that was what turned the show from flop to hit... even when Gwen came back.  And Gwen was known for doing something (in most of her shows) that was worse than constantly missing performances... she would show up but cut one or two of her numbers depending on  her mood at each performance.

broadway prices, unless you happen to do the lottery, chances are your tickets will not be cheap.  Maybe check out standing room only tickets (and then if there are empty seats you can move down).  Tickets will probably cost at least $50 US

Happy b-day MBarnum.

Yeah, I love the met. I went last time I was there and I so didn't have enough time to see everything. This is why I'd rather do it alone.

And my big problem is that I don't really like seeing musical theatre live when I've paid a lot of it. It disappoints me. I love the music, but i'd much rather see a cheap student production. To me, its all the same, the magic is still there.

Right now, I've got a lamb roast in the oven.  Der Brucer's son-in-law has supplied us with duck and venison, waiting in the freezer.

This makes me think of a question for BK and all the DRs: so much of the time, those of us who are carnivores eat beef, chicken, and pork (without which we wouldn't have ham chunks, right?).  Sometimes we branch out, with turkey during the holidays, or lamb.  Ostrich was popular in the high-end restaurants for a while.

But what are the more unusual meats you have enjoyed?  I've had buffalo and bear.  (Buffalo was like very lean beef; bear was gamier, but tasty.)

I'm not an adventurous eater, but one time (at the Puyallup Fair) I had a buffalo burger.  It was pretty good.  Another time I had beefalo, which is a hybrid cow/buffalo that was good, also.  That's about as adventurous as I've ever gotten.

Well, tonight I don't have any Ask BK Day Questions.  Otherwise, in about an hour, I'm going to see a local production of Pump Boys and Dinettes.  The theater group that's producing it is a good group, so I'm looking forward to it.

The MTM/Simon situation...I think Simon's allowed to be as harsh as he wants to an actor who doesn't learn his lines by opening.  And, really, an ear-piece so she can be fed lines...the height of unprofessionalism as well as walking out of the theatre before a performance, just because she got her knickers in a twist and had a snit fit.  Suck it up and don't take it out on stage with you, missy!

Ben,  some really good theatre going on right now in London.  Helen Mirren is getting good reviews in the National's MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA as is Eve Best who I saw a few years back in her debut with Jude Law in Tis Pity She's A Whore she won best newcomer for it that year.  Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie at the Donmar also sounds good.  Simon Russell Beale, maybe the best actor working in London today, just transferred in Stoppard's JUMPERS from the National to the West End.  So much more...SKELLIG directed by Trevor Nunn at the Young Vic, DEMOCRACY with Roger Allam at the Cottlesloe at the National, HAPPY DAYS with one of my favs Felicity Kendall directed by a fav, Sir Peter Hall(though I'm not a huge fan of Beckett); also Wilde's WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE with Rupert Graves at the Haymarket (my favourite theatre there).

Bruce, Did you sign the author wall leading upstairs at Bookfellows when you did your signing there?  I couldn't find your name when I was there yesterday.

Exotic meats?  The most exotic meat I ever had was venison on a flight to London on New Zealand Air...a great airline, I might add...As for the venison, it's okay...I now know exactly what one means when one describes something as gamey...Oh, it seems to me I also had venison at Rules in London once, along with blood pudding, which I quite liked...Still venison? I 'd prefer a steak...

Sorry, Mr. Pogue, but the way I heard it, the aging and ill Mr. Simon is notoriously rude with everyone, but never more so than with this play which apparently isn't funny and cannot be made funny and which he will never be happy with because he doesn't know from funny any longer.

MTM, from all reports, was gamely trying to accommodate Mr. Simon's severe eccentricities which included daily rewrites not logically related to the pages being replaced.  MTM was reportedly wearing the earpiece at the recommendation of the stage manager (or one of the producers) who felt it was the best way to keep her on stage and participating at a time when Mr. Simon is apparently in total meltdown.

If any of this is true, then perhaps Ms. Moore's removing herself from the hands of the senile old pisher was the right move.

It has never been a prerequisite of theater for actors to have total recall...and someone not used to daily changes is no less a professional than anyone else if he or she does what they must to give a performance under brutish conditions (if the reports are true, that is).

Anyone who has been in a new show, knows there are changes and rewrites going on constantly...it's part of the beast.   And I don't care how rude someone is to you, you have a contract and obligations to a whole lot of other people besides Mr. Simon, to say nothing of the audience on the other side of the footlights and its expectations.  So a cranky old man bawled you out.  Oh, boo, hoo, hoo.  Just get over it and get on with the show and sort it all out later.  If actors walked out of show every time there was a tantrum or they got their feelings hurt, Broadway would be dark half the time.

In answer to the question about Debbie Reynolds and Miss Adelaide, Frank Sinatra got a bunch of his cronies together and recorded a GUYS AND DOLLS album. As it's famously known, he was irked that he wasn't given the role of Sky Masterson in the Goldwyn movie musical version of the show, so the LP allowed him to at least sing the role the way he wanted. He used his friends to sing other numbers in the show (but it was not done as a true studio album in that Dean Martin might have sung one of Nicely's songs and Sammy Davis did another.) Debbie did "Adelaide's Lament" on that LP.

Well you will most likely not find $30 seats to any broadway show. Although some shows have rush seats in the first row or in the back. Orchestra seats cost $90US+ and even with the discounts it is still over $60. I would try TKTS or discount codes. Or buy near the back and move up.  Good luck girls.

How many broadway shows have you seen?  I just ask because if Phantom is the only one you've seen, then just give others a chance.  There is nothing like a musical on Broadway.

Jen--

Can't get into specifics... waaay too small a town 'round here. Most of the stuff you could figure-out yourself...

Do you see that little private message button in the top right part of your screen?  You can always use it.

I live in Montreal. I don't think anyone in LaLa land is gonna find out what you tell me :)

Plus I am dying to know.

And you can ask Bruce. I can keep a secret.

The Sinatra/Rat Pack recording of GUYS AND DOLLS was one of four recordings by the "Reprise Musical Theatre".  The other three (with mostly the same people) were SOUTH PACIFIC, FINIAN'S RAINBOW and KISS ME, KATE.  The four are available as a boxed CD set but I'm not sure if each is available as an individual CD.  They are interesting recordings... not quite show albums but not quite pop recordings.

BK - The Sour Rude Dudes were also sent UPS.  I hope that package wasn't screwed up too.  They were supposed to go out Friday but UPS never showed up for the pickup because of the snow, so they went out Monday.

I love pilates. It hurts so much yet feels soooo good.

I'm still undecided. I've been doing the Winsor Pilates 20 minute workout.  I don't particularly like most of the exercises. Plus i have a very delicate back and it hurts me to do it on a mat on the floor (I tried it on the couch today). We'll see.

And you have to ask us if we want a discount code. Um who do you think you're talking to? :)

Of course. Post it. Email it. One can never have too many discounts codes.

(this is pretty funny coming me today, since after fixing my shipping charges once today, amazon then proceeded to ship my other book so more shipping charges appeared :)

For BK: That is terrible about UPS. I hate when things like that happen. You wait for a package and then something always happens to the ones you really want. I remember earlier this year, I was desperately waiting for a  package. It was sent by Fedex and for some reason they were holding it (gotta love our customs people).  I was franctic (because what was in it was very important to me). It was finally delivered a day or two later.

I'm sure it will come. But I understand why you're worried.

Open question

I am interested in buying a recording of the music for the film Once Upon a Time in The West. It can be the soundtrack or a studio recording. I am looking (or listening) for one that is the most complete and the best representation of the score (Sound etc)

Good evening.

The usual evening post for me... Good show, good audience, blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Thankfully, my back pain has eased up quite a bit.  Now as long as I don't sleep in a funny/bad position, I should be back to normal come morning.

Oh - and I have a question for Ask BK Day:

If you were to re-make - or just presume that you were making it for the first time - TFNM movie today, are there any of today's "stars" that you would love to cast in the movie?  And if you were not to recreate your role, who would you get to play you?

Well, that's about it for me for right now...  I have some e-mails to catch up on... I'll check back in before turning in.

Maybe try a pilates class with an instructor first. It might help if you got the proper form and all. I've done some pilates at the Montreal pilates centre and they're very good. Although expensive.

I've never done full pilates at home, just a combo of yoga, ballet and pilates so it was minimum strain on my back

I loved phantom. Loved Annie.. However when you're stuck in place des arts and can't see anything, well it makes it hard to appreciate it.

I don't know - doesn't anyone else beside me notice this dearth of posts (compared to normal for the last four weeks)?  So many errant and truant (you know who you are).

Michael Shayne: There is a complete soundtrack available from most soundtrack specialty shops - this is NOT the RCA one.  Call Footlight and ask.

Ben: I assume you and Ant. will be going to see some shows in London. Any plans? "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" perhaps?

Good grief, TFO!  Do you want to talk sex or do you want to talk theater?  Make up your mind!

When I got home tonight (before going to see Pump Boys and Dinettes...which was very good, by the way) a posty note from UPS was posted on my apartment door. :D It's for a package that I got through eBay, but I don't know which it could be.  Anyway, I went on-line and am having UPS redirect it to my work where we get UPS shipments every day.  I don't have to go to the UPS place and I don't have to use vacation time from work so that I can go home to sign for the package.  That's a pretty cool option that UPS offers and it doesn't cost any extra at all! ;D That's my UPS story of the day

Oh yes, it has been noticed.  But I do seem to remember us having December doldrums around here in the past.  Peaks and valleys, man, peaks and valleys.  All will come back to normal soon enough, I'm sure.

With the talk of eating bears, cut lunches and TCB who thinks like Jenny I can't make up my mind (and he would know) it is probably a good thing that I have been absent enjoying LOTR for even more hours than I had planned.
At our local hotel eatery it is usual to have emu, buffalo, kangaroo and crocodile on the menu. I won't even eat rabbit in case I spoil easter! No way will I order Bambi either. Thanks for the smiles my friends.
(I think that wild animal called a "tofu" is the worst food I have tasted!).
