I am most definitely about to fall asleep, so I will say good night.

"Good night."

Today, I plan to do very little.  My back has been hurting me and I haven't had much time to do nothing and let it get better.  As Mame says, "It's Today!" ;D

Is scarab as sacred as crab?

If a scarab was made of a chocolate-like substance, would it be a carab scarab?

It is raining here in Rehoboth.  We are going to have a busy day at work.  (The two events seem to happen hand-in-hand.  Next thing you know, they'll be smooching in public and causing a scandal.)

DRJANE - I am so glad you enjoyed the Annette clip.  It's from Thunder Alley which seems to be a sort of remake of Fireball 500....sort of.  Both of these movies are featured on a Midnite Movie DVD from MGM and when you watch them both, it's like.....which movie is this again?

Good morning, all!  I got to sleep in a bit because my niece Alison, who came by this weekend from Tennessee to see her grandfather, brought her young son Chase over to meet me.  He's two and just adorable.  My brother Tom called from the hospital to say that my Dad will not be released today or tomorrow:  more tests to be run.  The it may be the food yesterday is helping.

I've been getting from my niece because I don't email her enough, so I resolve to change that situation.

I will now go visit a bit and head for the hospital.

TOD:  what was it again?

It's in the high 70s here but isn't supposed to go much beyond 82 or 83 today which should make for a beautiful June day.

The usual Sunday chores will keep me in the house for much of the day, and I also have a lineup on things I want to watch also.

Watching CHARLIE CHAN IN SHANGHAI the other day, I couldn't help noticing a very young Jon Hall as one of the supporting cast. But his name was nowhere in the credits. Then it dawned on me that he's billed as Charles Locher. I guess that's his real name, or was at the time.

It looks like we've successfully placed Angie in a new home.

When I got off work yesterday, der Brucer had Angie in the car with him.  The parents of a nine-year-old girl had made contact, and wanted their little girl to meet our little girl and see if they were a good match.  They were indeed.  Dad clearly has had experience in training dogs, and spent nearly an hour with Angie coaching her on sitting, staying, coming.  He'll most likely get Daughter involved in the training as well, teaching her how to assert herself.  We left Angie with her new family, feeling good about her new surroundings.

So we're back to a family of two humans and five dogs.  That's not likely to last very long.

Put in the last of the SUPERMAN discs which I hadn't watched, and I enjoyed several episodes including "The Girl Who Hired Superman" and "The Wedding of Superman." Didn't get to my all-time favorite color episode "Dagger Island," but it's next, and I'll watch it when I go back in the den for evening viewing.

John Eldredge (Gloria Talbot's guardian in "The Girl Who Hired Superman") has always been a favorite character actor.

I also recorded ATHENA from TCM this morning (this is the Jane Powell-Debbie Reynolds musical with Steve Reeves in it.)

I have the film on laserdisc, but the laserdisc presentation is full frame, and ATHENA was letterboxed on TCM and looks much sharper than the laserdisc so I'll probably burn a DVD-R for myself of this movie.

Are we on our way to a new all-time low?  At this rate, we certainly are.

Had a nice visit with PennyO, gave her my two cents about her upcoming interview, and then played her the four songs, which she seemed to like - the final one, the ballad that I had so much trouble with, moved her to tears, so that was nice.  We then had a nice lunch.

Greetings from Cleveland, OH!  The drive up here seemed to take for-evah - lots of traffic and construction zones.

At least I had a good audio book:  Martha Grimes' Foul Matter narrated by Stephen Hoye.  It's a thriller set in the NY publishing world and the literary discourses between the hit men are hysterical.

There is one problem with our having placed Angie in a new home...

Fletcher misses her.

Sure, he was getting pretty tired of her constant pesting to play.  There's only so often a fellow wants his tail pulled or leg gnawed on.

All the same, he's acting mopey today.

He hasn't even bothered to knock over the kitchen trash can.

HI all!  DR Ginny, didn't mean to not respond this morning. As soon as I logged on I heard the most god awful noise outside - it was my handyman grinding the stumps left from the bushes he took out last week.  So, I ran outside to see what was up. It was great, except I decided to take more bushes out, so I may have to pay to rent the stump grinder again after he's got the rest of the bushes removed.  He also hauled a ton of boxes I had in the garage from moving to the recycle bin.

That got me off on a cleaning frenzy. I have been working on the house all day. It's great to have this energy.  I still have a couple things to do, then I'll set up Bootsie's room - I decided to give her the guest room instead of putting her in the basement.  Callie used to like that room, but hasn't gone in there in ages.  It's actually the room where she can do the least damage.

The weather today was not parade friendly.  We met up at about 11:15 to get ready for the parade's 12:00 start time.  It had been overcast all morning and then started to drizzle lightly at about 11:45.  Then right before noon, the rain started coming down harder.  I don't think it lasted for more than a half hour, but I think it affected the number of folks who came to watch.  The parade started up at 53rd Street, but there wasn't a consistent crowd of people until we got under 30th.
Title: Re:FALLING ASL
Post by: TPunk on June 25, 2006, 04:09:00 PM
All in all, it was a great experience.  Lots of cheering and positive energy coming from the crowds.  I only saw one protestor standing in front of the main library.  He was holding some sign about homosexuals not being condoned by the bible or some such nonsense.  There was a policeman standing next to him, probably to ensure that he was not harrassed by the more tolerant folks surrounding him.

Ordered the FLOATING WEEDS Criterion 2-disk set.  Have never gone wrong with MR BK's recommendations....and this one seemed to appeal to me the most story-wise...even with the caveat in the notes today.

I thought it would be MOST interesting to see the same story in silent and sound/color versions made by the SAME director.

Howdy, gang! I'm at the marina, stealing away for time to write... I had a grand time pickin' Uncle Bruce's brain (the title of my next sci-fi movie...) before heading off to my interview on Tuesday. As usual, he hadmuch info and advice. He played me The Songs - now I have re-writing to do to accommodate them - you will love these songs. They are so right. Some laugh-out-loud stuff, some toe-tappin' hum-along stuff, some grab yer ol' heart and give it a squeeze stuff. yes, I admit it - I was moved to tears by the Ballad - way too close to home. He does know me too well.

So, then we had a bite - he had breakfast, I had salad -- AND I never got the story I was promised - forgot all about it in the frenzy of ideas for shows we both know and love and wanna do.

So, Professor, I'll expect the details along with the lyrics in a soon-to-be-delivered e-missive... I did go back and read the notes. Oh, the intrigue...

DR RODZINSKI....I agree about Miss Annette in THUNDER ALLEY, she was never more "mature" or lovely....finally away from being a "youngster" or juvenile lead.  She and Fabian were always more my favorite couple than Annie and Frankie...and the Fabe looks great here, too.

It's on a MIDNIGHT MOVIE dvd with FIREBALL 500....worth a rent or a used buy!

DRTPUNK - what was the best costume you saw at the parade?  And who had on the least?

Because we were in the parade, I didn't get to see much of the other participants.  When we were getting organized pre-start time, I did see a man covered from head to toe in bright gold glitter with a gorgeous feathered headress.

As for least dressed... there were two middle aged women who attached themselves to the end of the GMHC section.  They both had enormous, um, assets and were shimmying to their hearts' delight.  One woman had a very low cut tank top with her bra showing.  The other actually pulled her tank top completely down and tucked it under so that her girls were out on full display.  The first time I saw her I thought it was a costume, but nope, they were real.

I did not do too much today. I got out of bed at 9something but was still very tired.  I waited around until my sis came over to get little megan's booster seat so she could take it to a restaurant.  Then I went to the store.  Then the little megan came over to bring back her seat.

While here she played and went outside and had a swing.

And we started planning her first birthday party (in mid septemter)!

I forgot to mention, but yesterday for the bbq i made my 7 layer dip. Well yesterday it was only a 6 layer dip. But hopefully nobody noticed!

It is fascinating to see what foods go fast.

Yesterday the chicken wings went like crazy in minutes.

And these eggrolls got finished before i could even try one.

And for some reason everyone wanted nachos instead of potato chips (or bbq ones).

Everyone left early (6pm or 7pm from 1:30pm). So my sis called my parents and invited them over (i was still there) to eat up the food that was left!

Sunday morning greetings!  Had a lovely sleep-in, 'til 8:45, saw Richard off to church and am now about to get ready for my drive to Cleveland.  I'm going today for a midday meeting tomorrow at the Foundation Center.  Tonight=dinner with a librarian friend at Bahama Breeze (http://www.bahamabreeze.com), which is right next to my  hotel.
Never heard of this chain before.  But it does sound interesting.  The recipe section of the site is really interesting - I think I'd like to try the Creamed Spinach with Coconut Milk (http://www.bahamabreeze.com/recipes/appetizers/creamed_spinach.asp), but I'd have to reduce it some for der B and me, since it's written to serve eight and the dogs (supposedly) don't like spinach.
Title: Re:FALLING ASL

On tonight's menu: London Broil steak, marinated in wine and soy sauce and Tabasco, but don't tell der B, then rubbed with chili powder and cocoa powder...

Yes, cocoa powder.  It's something I put in my chile all the time, lends an interesting contrast and depth to the flavor, and I tried it on a steak a few weeks ago and it worked.

Good evening!  I'm back from another day of hospital sitting.  My brother's idea about the fish was genius:  he showed up around 12:30 with a container of fish baked in lemon and butter, macaroni and cheese, and banana cream pie!  After my dad's regular hospital diet of rice, apple sauce, and milk, this perked hiom right up.  He ate quite well today, so that's a positive sign.  I think he'll be released early in the week.  My sister-in-law Donna also got him hooked today on peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

All in all, the best day this week.  Thanks for the vibes!

DR RODZINSKI....I agree about Miss Annette in THUNDER ALLEY, she was never more "mature" or lovely....finally away from being a "youngster" or juvenile lead.

She also has a sexy kind of gravitas in that scene. Cool, half-distracted. For a moment you think she's going to light up a smoke, but no, she's just casually filling a cigarette container while she sings.

TPunk, I looked for you when GMHC was between 17th and 16th Streets but I think you were on the East side of Fifth Avenue. I was on the West Side. There was a big group with GMHC so it was hard to spot you. Glad you had a good time marching. The parade got down to us around 1pm and I watched for about an hour. I saw Mayor Bloomberg and Hillary Clinton and Christine Quinn (our City Council Speaker) and Charles Schumer, our other Senator and Anthony Wiener, a NY congressman. As TP said, the ASOs (AIDS Service Organizations) were in the front of the march this year so I saw them all.

I was around for the 2pm Moment of Silence and then I went back home to finalize plans for the late afternoon/evening.

I went uptown and saw (with friends) A Prairie Home Companion. I found it sweet, low-key, charming and everything I was hoping/expecting. I do think if you're not a fan of the show or if you don't know the show at all the movie might seem a bit precious or unfocused but I really, really enjoyed it. I'm not a big Woody Harrelson fan but he was perfect as Dusty (or Lefty, I forget which one he played) and the Guy Noir segments on the radio show are not my favorite but the way they worked him into the plot were quite good. I did miss the News from Lake Wobegone (based on the city of Anoka, MN where GK grew up for those of you wondering) but it would not have worked to have that segment in the movie. It was GREAT to see Mickey's Diner in all it's little glory. Many a late night was spent there after a performance at the Chimera Theatre just up the road a piece. Great chili and pancakes (not together) and milk shakes!

We then had dinner at the Hell's Kitchen location of Chelsea Grill, a favorite restaurant of Ant's and mine down in our neighborhood. I had the deliciously bad bacon wrapped meatloaf with smashed potatoes and spinach. Umm! The three of us then shared a Chocolate Bomb, a souffle with a piece of banana in the middle, drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with vanilla ice cream! It was all a post-Birthday celebration for my friend so it was a great way to top off the evening.

It's now 10:15 and I have to go to work tomorrow morning. Adieu all until around 7am.

I felt the same way about Prairie Home Companion, Ben, excepting the memories of Minnesota, which is a state I have not been to. My one thought though is for people unfamiliar with the radio show, they might come out thinking that the show was almost entirely music-based. But, I'm sure they shot other stuff and just went with what worked best.

TPunk and I went out for Indian a little bit ago, now she's sleeping.

Exactly...and the jazzy arrangement is the opposite of the pop stuff she usually sang.  Of course she would NEVER light up on screen - and anyway I think those are L & M's and Annette's choice of ciggies happens to be LARK....still smokes 'em....against her doctors' orders.

And when she used to be out and people expressed shock that America's darling was smoking she used to say:  "I also have three children, so guess what else I do?"  :o

LP cover of the night...

This cover itself is not so interesting, but the record is. This guy put out several albums where he wrote songs for different women's names. All the covers look like this, only the names change. The songs are all unique; that is to say he did not merely insert different women's names into the same music. This particular LP contains an oddity: A song called "World Peace."

Annette Funicello was in HEAD.

Yes. Makes a nice double bill with Frankie Avalon in SKIDOO.

Haven't read it....didn't even know it existed!  A chronicle of the dysfunctional rabble that made REBEL should be interesting.

You knew of course, that the Mansion in the swimming pool sequence was the same one used in Sunset Blvd?  8)

And if you look closely, you can still see William Holden floating in the center of the pool.

But seriously, the Gay and Lesbian book club (Insight Out Book Club) has highly recommended the book for the past several months.

Seems Gordon Thomas is still alive, and someone has made a movie about him. Check out gordonthomas.com
He's 90 years old if that site is current.

Oh yes she did....and of course Carroll (Luz II) and Jimmy (Jett) knew each other back in New York before they both became movie stars....

She writes lovingly of him in her autobiography.  :'(

Of course she wrote lovingly of James Dean.  He was the only guy in all of New York who didn't hit on her.

I took a little nap late this afternoon, and I wished I hadn't when I woke up. It left me feeling very weak. Thankfully, as I moved around and got the bathroom cleaned, I started feeling much better, but for awhile there I was really afraid I had come down with something.

I finished the SUPERMAN boxed set early this evening. The episodes were better than I remembered them during these seasons, and while the transfers were of variable quality on many of the shows, all were never less than watchable, and I'm thrilled to have them.

Next, I watched COLD CASE. This was one of the episodes from earlier in the year which I had missed due to sports runovers, so it was brand new to me: a very melancholy remembrance of a sour marriage.

DEADWOOD had a terrific episode which introduced Brian Cox playing an actor who has come to town with his acting company. The inference is that he's gay (which should add another level of interest to an already fascinating array of characters).

Oh, the battlelines in this show continue to shift in such intriguing ways. Really love this show.

It appears to be a migraine remedy... not Rodzinski's first choice perhaps, but could be handy in a pinch

The commercial shows a woman applying something in stick form to her forehead.  A voice says Head On, Apply directly to your head three times.. That's the whole commercial

ENTOURAGE introduced a new character to its story tonight as well, an ex-con who once ran with the boys back in Jersey. Should make for plenty of fireworks in upcoming weeks.

I burned my DVD-R of ATHENA which means I doubt I'll ever watch the laserdisc again. ATHENA was filmed in EastmanColor which means it isn't exactly vibrant, but the laserdisc wasn't any more colorful, and with the sharpness issues I mentioned this morning, makes me glad I decided to record this this morning.

Spet the last 15 minutes of prime time viewing revisiting THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER. I didn't remember the opening action sequence at all, but, given that it's been three or four years since I watched this, I guess it's not surprising I didn't remember it.

The DVD transfer from Paramouont is really a thing of beauty.

Back from a lovely weekend in Washington DC.  Saw and absolutely adored the Kennedy center production of MAME twice, and a stunning production of ASSASSINS at the Signature Theater in nearby Arlington VA.  The Doubletree Hotel was most enjoyable, but alas, no business center, so just coming out of the longest internet-deprived periods I've had in a long time.

Today I went to Costco with DR WFO and his Joe.  They are not members andwer quite impressed with all the bargains.

When we got to the DVD section we found the Charlie Chan Collection for $36.95 and collections of movies by Mae West , Clark Gable, Betty Grable ... no Bollywood movies though (we checked!)

I went to Costco today.  It was the only time I left my house.  My back has been hurting me for the last week and a half and I've been taking acetaminophen but it hasn't done anything for me.  I finally bought and took some ibuprofen and, even though I'm not instantly back to normal, I'm feeling a lot better than I have all week from the acetaminophen.

I also bought the two-DVD pack of "Valley of the Dolls" and "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls."  I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've never seen either of these movies, and now I own them. :)

Otherwise, I did nothing else but watch TV ... "Last Comic Standing," the first episode of the now cancelled "Out of Practice," and episode of "Lovespring International" (The improvised comedy series revolves around the wacky goings-on at an elite matchmaking service in Tarzana, California).  This is pretty funny.
