Well, you've read the notes, the notes have freaked you out, and now it is time for you to post until the freaked out cows come home.  To it, I say.

It's my day off.

The dogs decided they wanted breakfast.

They woke me up.

I've fed them their doggie biscuit breakfast, and am trying to work up the ambition to go back to bed.

Good morning/night.

Good morning, all!  My wonderful sister-in-law, cook par excellence, and hostess, Jo Ann, let me stay in this morning to get some editorial work done. She's with my dad at the hospital, and I'll go in around noon.

It's been quiet here this morning, just me and Mattie and Max the two wonderful muts, which appear to be a mix of German shepherd with God knows what.  They're both a hoot and I'm quite fond of them.

I had to call my Manhattan post office this morning:  Dlyan's uncle has died and he's upstate with family, so my mail is piling up.  I needed to take care of the mess before another item arrives since I don't know at what time he's returning today.

My missing sock showed up under the bed last night.  I swear it was not there when I checked yesterday morning.

I have forgotten the TOD!

I hate computer weirdness....I hope I have had my quota for the year.

My question for ASK BK day.....when the Ricardos & Mertzes were in California at the Beverly Palms Hotel, there was a great backdrop of LA outside their window.  Sometimes it was day and sometimes it was night.  Do you think it was two different backdrops, or the same one lit differently, it seems some of the NEON signs were on at night....which means they would have to change the drop during breaks from filming....

I saw it on another Desilu show....I forget which one....might have been PRIVATE SECRETARY.

Hmmm...the Head On commercials appear to be regional.  Some parts of the country are told to apply directly to the head by a male voice, other parts are told to apply directly to their foreheads by a female.

Last night, DR Laura posted a link to the forehead version.  I found a more informative version:

Howdy, folks!

Well, the interview yesterday was quite interesting and fun - and, of course, it was ALL ABOUT ME, which I tend to like a lot. BUT - it was apparently the preliminary interview. There will be a callback. OY. Anyway, they seemed to like me, and I liked them - but it was all underlings - secretaries, assistants to the Big People - except there was ONE music teacher there. When they finished their questions - all good questions and thought provoking - they asked if I had any for them.

First - what happened with the last Artistic Director??? Eyes darting around furtively, no one answering... finally, one woman said, "Well, she was a teacher, and she really wanted to go back to teaching..." which was the in the press release when she scrammed outa there...

then I asked the music teacher, "What's your instrument?" He said, "Percussion." I said, "Hey, Paul Gemignani is a percussionist!" He said, happily, "I know!" So that was a nice moment.

Kidz, I am fatally optimistic, just as a personality type - but, I gotta say, I think I aced that audition, and I feel like I OWN this gig!!!

AND, happy birthday to Mark!!!

GOod morning!

It's already hot and muggy here; was when I went out to get the newspaper this morning at 8:15. Ugh! And after all the rain the previous few days, I'm going to have to tackle mowing that lawn either today or tomorrow. It will have to be late afternoon/early evening, though. It'll be hot no matter what time I do it, but at least the sun won't be beaming down on me.

Simply nothing on TV that I'm interested in tonight, so I'll be endeavoring to watch the things piling up on the DVR. Want to finish THE GIRL MOST LIKELY if I possibly can. There is BROTHERS GRIMM which I'm curious to see (it got pretty awful reviews). And I noticed something was recording this morning, but I don't recall what I had set the DVR in advance to record. Probably a musical off either TCM or the Fox Movie Channel, but I won't know for sure until I check while I'm preparing lunch.

Question for Ask BK Day:

While listening to SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING over the weekend, I naturally noticed that you produced this reissue. While I'm grateful that this wonderful music made it to CD, how did you arrive at choosing this item from the unreleased old Columbia catalog as opposed to something like, say, THE MAD SHOW (which is out now but wasn't at the time) or the 1973 CANDIDE or THE THREEPENNY OPERA revival? Is SUBWAYS a guilty pleasure of yours or were there other matters at work?

Inquiring minds asked about current house pix, presumably expecting wonderful flood shots.

Well, all of Sussex County (the lower half of the State of Delaware) has been decalred a disaster area. There is major flooding in towns like Milton and Seaford (both about a 30 minute drive). We at Rehoboth, however, have escaped most of the deluge. The storms move from the Carolinas up the Atlantic seaboard in a NE direction - and the eastren edge oftem misses Rehoboth on the far east coast.

So, while the rest of the state is deluvian, here we are this morning:

Called to activate a credit card yesterday, and I got a human operator. Now I used to activate credit cards for a living during college in Athens, GA, so I asked this kid where he was. He says, "I'm on the East Coast." Oh, have you been getting rain, I ask. "No," he says. "I've heard there's been a lot of rain, but we haven't gotten any here." So I ask him where on the East Coast he is. "Uh, Kentucky," he says.

Los Angeles narrowly avoids a "Shaming":

 Long Beach Press-Telegram (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SPAY_CAMPAIGN_FLAP?SITE=CALON&SECTION=HOME&)

Quote
Officials Criticize 'Hooters for Neuters'

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Several city officials on Tuesday sharply criticized a planned bikini contest to raise money for spaying pets, saying the "Hooters for Neuters" event was degrading to women.

Hosted by the Hooters restaurant chain, the July 13 fundraiser will donate money to the spay and neuter programs at Los Angeles Animal Services.

"Are we going backward here?" said City Controller Laura Chick. "We are a city with all kinds of progressive programs that empower women and end discrimination in the workplace, and now we're being connected with a Hooters bikini contest. It isn't right."

Councilwoman Jan Perry said the department's attempt to be creative in telling pet owners to sterilize their animals "crosses the line."

"I was surprised and amazed with the photograph on the flier, and I don't think it projects a good image for the city of Los Angeles," Perry said.

Also appalled at the idea that the home of Malibu, Santa Monica, and Venice Beach might me associated with bikini clad women, the  LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bikini28jun28,0,5963738.story?col) chimed in:

Quote
Hooters' Benefit for L.A. Animal Services Is a Bust
Since taking office last summer, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has urged his employees to be creative and think outside the box.

Taking that advice to heart, the chief of the Los Angeles Animal Services Department paired with a Hooters restaurant in Hollywood for a bikini contest to raise money for city neutering and spaying programs.

But the howls of protests that greeted animal services chief Ed Boks' fundraising plan forced him to reconsider. On Tuesday afternoon, he canceled the city's role in the contest.

In an interview Tuesday, hours before he dropped his plan, Boks said Hooters and other businesses came up with the idea of the bikini contest and approached his agency about being the beneficiary. He agreed because of his goal to reduce the number of animals euthanized in the city's six shelters.

"Animal Services has a five-year goal to end euthanasia. It is going to take an entire community to do that," Boks said. "We are merely the beneficiaries of this event; we are not sponsoring it. The long-term purpose of participating is to save lives of animals.

"Are some people going to be offended that we're working with Hooters?" he added. "Obviously, and I apologize for that. Hooters is a legitimate business — it's not pornographic — and they're helping us. I hope other businesses in the community will be inspired by them."

Not long afterward, Boks issued a news release, stating:

"I have reconsidered Animal Services' role as beneficiary" of the event "and have decided we will not be accepting any donations."

In the last year, the city has euthanized about 19,500 animals, Boks said — an improvement over years past but still far too many, he believes.

I guess "outside the box" doesn't include boobs!

der Brucer

NOTE: 19,500 dead pets a year means nearly 10 animals per hour are "euthanized" every working day in LA

You're being a tad harsh. A simple geographic breakdown of the US would be:

East Coast - Atlantic to the Mississippi
Mid West - Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains
West Coast - the Rockies to the Pacific

The terms "East Coast" and "West Coast" are commonly used without regard to contiguous waters.

Forgot to mention an interesting thing about Ozu's An Autumn Afternoon.  Every Ozu film I've seen (including the 1934 version of Floating Weeds) has the exact same sort of title sequence - the titles appearing over a piece of what looks like burlap.  Every single film, rather like Woody Allen's titles always white on black in the same font (what was the first film he did that on?).  So, it was quite strange to see that on Ozu's final film the titles took place over drawings of trees.

Back from a jog and the bank and various and sundried.  And, I completely changed course on the book I'd started.  Another idea just came to me yesterday, completely out of the blue, and the entire first paragraph basically came into my head, almost full-blown.  That's too good a sign, and I'm totally already in love with the leading character, for whom the book will be named.  I've already done three pages this morning - I'm thinking the chapters are going to be very short in this book, which is a style I'm very fond of but haven't really done.  We'll see how we progress, but I liked this one enough to already have its title page typed out, something I rarely do unless I'm sure.

I just ordered two vintage (1947, 1957) and one new (2002)Egyptian DVDs.

I have seen one Egyptian movie, a musical comedy from the 40s, and it was so much fun! Just like the American musical comedies of that same era. So I am hoping these are just as good!

I am with you, Rodzinski.  I can't imagine that something that your rub on your forehead can do anything to relieve the pain of a regular headache, let alone a migraine.  If it works it is amazing.

Right, and if it is amazing, it is so amazing that we would have heard about it on the news or some science program.

You're being a tad harsh. A simple geographic breakdown of the US would be:

East Coast - Atlantic to the Mississippi
Mid West - Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains
West Coast - the Rockies to the Pacific

The terms "East Coast" and "West Coast" are commonly used without regard to contiguous waters.

der Brucer

No dice. Indiana is not the "East Coast" by any stretch of the imagination. Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio?  Maybe the terms "East" and "West" are used that way. Like if you are in California and you say you are going back East. But for some guy who is staring at a computer and KNOWS I am in New York City to say he is on the East Coast when he is in Kentucky, well, that's legitimately odd.

Had some different video offerings on tap today. Started off finally finishing THE GIRL MOST LIKELY. This will not go down in my memory as a memorable musical. That Indian number had some intricate choreography for the camera, and the production number in Mexico showed why they tapped Keith Andes to do WILDCAT since he could sing and move quite well.

But for a 98 minute movie, it took me three days to watch it because it was just so dismally directed and plotted. Not one I'll ever want to see again.

Right, and if it is amazing, it is so amazing that we would have heard about it on the news or some science program.

Well, to me it's obvious that Head On is composed of Micro Miracle Pain Relieving Particles (MMPRP) that, when applied directly to the head, penetrate skin, muscle and skull and flow into the frontal lobes of the brain providing fast, FAST, FAST relief.

I understand these things, because I took Consumer Chemistry in college.

Re Head On:

According to Wilkipedia, the Free Encyclopedia:

Potassium dichromate is one of the most common culprits in causing chromium dermatitis. Chromium is highly likely to induce sensitization leading to dermatitis, especially of the hand and fore-arms, which is chronic and difficult to treat. As with other CrVI products, potassium dichromate is carcinogenic and should be handled with gloves and appropriate health and safety protection. However, Potassium dichromate is one of the key ingredients in the migraine over-the-counter medication called Headon.

Went to Koo Koo Roo - I predict they'll be out of business soon.  They have totally screwed up the place - now it's almost all self-serve in terms of side dishes and nothing is as good.  The Buffalo Wings were almost inedible (I was very hungry and I ate what I could of them) and the little side of mac and cheese, normally excellent, was barely passable.  My last visit to them, I'm afraid.  What a waste of calories and a meal.  I wish I'd just driven over the hill go Genghis Cohen - now I can't really have a good meal today.  Oh, well, there's always tomorrow.

I will give new shows a try if what I read prior to their premieres intrigues me. This didn't. Then, I read three or four negative reviews from critics, and that cinched it in my mind.

Have you seen it and recommend it? I might give it a try if it has the TCB seal of approval.

Wednesday evening greetings!  My friend Becky and I had a delightful day at Robert Rothschild Farm in Urbana, OH.  We looked around the Market, sampled several products, then sat on the patio for a 2-hour lunch.  We each had one of the daily special flatbread pizzas - she honey mustard chicken and I southwest.  We exchanged tastes and they were both yummy.  For dessert she ordered peanut butter pie and I ordered key lime; we split each piece and had half and half.

When we went back into the shop to shop, the food items didn't look nearly as good as they had before lunch, but I did manage to buy:

10 mini jars of assorted dips and sauces to give away

1 large jar of Bloody Mary Salsa to share with my DH & DS

Some Amaretto candy sticks; some Kahlua candy sticks

2 boxes of fancy crackers to go with the shrimp spread that I just made to take to a beloved co-worker's retirement reception tomorrow

Skip's show is called HERRINGBONE; it starred David Rounds at Playwrights Horizons way back in 1982, and was done in the 1990's by B.D. Wong in Philadelphia at what is now the Prince Music Theater, and by Joel Grey at Hartford Stage.    Info on the Vancouver, WA production is at

Otto is so cute!

SWW and Brucer - that large building to the right is the DAWGHOUSE??? Oh, my!

Elmore - glad your dad has improved and gets to come home. A hospital is no place for a sick person...

Okay, so here's the scoop: I was just north of Ventura when i got a call from the secretary - umm, make that Human Resources Specialist - the upshot of which is, thanks but no thanks. What a strong candidate, but a very competitive field of applicants - the most surprising thing of all was the enormous sense of RELIEF I felt - now, whassup with THAT??? Could have been the conversations I'd had with a former Artistic Director, as well as the bizarre early departure of his successor... but I did! I did feel enormously relieved. I KNOW I want a job. And dollars would be nice. So, onward!

Of course, this means that I can do my old show with Bruce's new songs this fall! Bruce, I guess I'm gonna lay the blame on YOU, buddy!

Penny, I guess your feeling of relief says it all.  Does this mean you might be able to meet up with us on July 9th?

Penny, I hope you can come to dinner in Tacoma on Sunday the Ninth for an intimate HHW Northwest gathering.  Details to follow.

Who says HHW vibes don't work?

I'm a believer!

I had a lovely dinner of chicken and noodles courtesy of my sister-in-law and chef par excellence Jo Ann, I've spoken to Dylan who got safely back to Manhattan, and I've had some tasty vanilla ice cream.  I'm off to bed.

Hi all, we had a power outage tonight for quite awhile. Not sure what that was all about. I should go tune into the news and see if there's any word. I am currenty hanging out with Bootsie in the guest room. We're taking baby steps.  Callie smelled her room today and Bootsie got to explore the office. But they are still a hissing away when they see each other and Bootsie is still wanting to lay around and sleep a lot. so I'm not going to push it

Callie did put a toy mouse in my purse which I discovered in the court room when I was looking for a cough drop. LOL

I better go - we've got a ton of hearings starting at 8:00AM, so I need to get some beauty sleep and reset my alarm clock after the power outage.

PennyO, blame it on Rio, blame it on the bossa nova, put the blame on Mame, but don't blame me.

We did the fixes quickly and now I'll get a new disc to proof, which should be perfect, and then we're on to the authoring phase.

Good Evening!

Greetings from... Hmm... Poughkeepsie!  *I had to double-check exactly where I was/am... It's been a truly crazy past couple of days...

I have yet to ready today's notes and posts - and yesterday's too... But, I have to say the title of today's Notes is basically what I was on the verge of last night.  Although, some witnesses may say that I actually did freak out last night... I think...

;)

In any case...  I'm gonna attempt to catch up now, so...

Laters...

I am with you, Rodzinski.  I can't imagine that something that your rub on your forehead can do anything to relieve the pain of a regular headache, let alone a migraine.  If it works it is amazing.

Not anything?

Very good news about your father, DR ELmore, and I'll continue to keep the good thought as the days progress.

Well, I couldn't resist temptation, so I watched two more episodees of THE CLOSER: one involving a gay bashing and one dealing with the rape and murder of a maid. I remembered both but enjoyed both thoroughly.

Then, I decided I'd finish the animated ANASTASIA which I had started yesterday. I thought that was Liz Callaway's singing voice for Anastasia, and I was right. I knew it wasn't Meg Ryan's! Angela Lansbury plays and sings the Dowager (the Helen Hayes role from the 1956 film).

It was a very busy day at work today culminating with a closing I had to drive 33 miles to get to... the last closing I will be doing at this here law firm and I am feeling sad, nostalgic and bit panicked as I have two days left to clean everything up and leave a nice neat space for my coworker to whom I have bequeathed my my job........
Title: Re:THE FREAKOUT
Post by: Matt H. on June 28, 2006, 08:35:44 PM
And after hearing those ANASTASIA songs so much, nothing would do except I had to see the 1998 Olympics where the songs werre skated to. I have a commercial DVD of the skating competition from that Olympics, so it was easy to put it in the player and cue up Tara Lipinski and Michelle Kwan's short and long programs. I'm not sure there has ever been an Olympics where the top two skaters skated flawless programs in both long and short. Four amazing performances and I watched each several times because they were just so breathtaking.

I had a nice dinner with my mom at the new and very fancy Bently's which is in the new and even fancier tall new downtown hotel/convention center. As we began to look at the menus a van came tumbling, yes, tumbling past our window and landed on the sidewalk.

Crazy Salem drivers.
Title: Re:THE FREAKOUT
Post by: MBarnum on June 28, 2006, 09:12:43 PM
PS: The gal driving the van was not hurt too bad, it appeared, as she was able to climb out of the wreckage with the help of rescuers. I am sure she was quite shook up however as she was not wearing her seat belt and we could see her flying all around the inside of the vehicle as it was tumbling...I was surprised she wasn't thrown out as all the windows were broken out. She is very lucky.

It was actually all quite a shock at the time.
