Well, you've read the notes, the notes were too darn hot, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently suffering from hot heat prostration.

Topic of the Day:  Hmmm...the most luxurious thing I've ever treated myself to?  I don't know if I've ever gotten anything that's really "luxurious."  My car was the most expensive thing I've ever gotten myself, but that's not luxurious...especially being just a Ford Escort. ::) I'll definitely have to think about that for a while.

Is there anything that can be done to FESTINATE the release?? ;)

Hmmm, have to think about that. I guess trips to Europe are luxuries so our trips to England and Ireland and Wales could be considered.

I must pick up the pace on the AT&T Foundation. We are behind schedule at work and I need to push through as much work as possible before we start overtime (in August) or I will be working even more OT. It's nice for the bank account but tiresome in every other aspect.

Good morning, all!  For some reason, I misread my alarm and got up an hour earlier.  I'm about to leave for hospital, hoping my edad will be coming back with me.

My sister-in-law has headed for Indiana to check on her camper - after all the rain they're concerned about damage - and my brother will join her tomoorow for the weekend, leaving me and the dogs to deal with the noisy ghosts.  My nephew Matt will most likely be in and out; he's a party boy.  I tried to fix him up with one of the cute nurses he'd been checking out, but I think the moment has passed.

DR Jose, tell us more about freaking out.

TOD:  either the 2-volume Musical Theatre book by Richard Norton or the critical edition of the score to BORIS GUDONOV.  Both cost quite a bit and were worth every penny.  Now I want to start buying the complete set of the new Kurt Weill Edition.

I can't think of much that I consider "luxury" items.  I've never been all that material.

Mind, I really like my stove.  But that's something der B bought for me, not something I bought myself.

I think the hot heat is getting to the cats.  Walty lunged at and attacked Killbot right in front of us as Rodzinski was getting ready to go to work.  He kept hissing and growling after we separated them and then cried after we put him in the guest room.  Things seem to be okay with them now.  They are now engaged in a pattern of cautiously sniffing each other and then moving away to sit close by.  I think that means all is well, but just in case I'm going to work out at home today instead of leaving them together right now.

TOD: Does quitting my job so that I could be a full-time student count? It certainly felt like a luxury to be able to focus primarily on school- in spite of the fact that it ate up all of my savings.

I also purchased a dress once that I had seen in a window many times and loved.  I bought it to wear to a series of weddings that we were attending that summer.  While it wasn't outrageously priced, it is defintely one of the most expensive if not the most expensive article's of clothing I've ever purchased.  But I love it and it makes me feel great when I wear it.

When Vixdad and I got married we didn;t have time for a long honeymoon as his out of country relatives planned their trips to arrive a week before the wedding and  their departutre wasn't unti two days after the wedding... so we took our 2 weeks vacations to coincide with their visits and  just took a Wed - Sun stay in the Pennsylvania Poconos yes we stayed inthe Champagne Towers!

A fireplace, a hot tub, a sauna, a double shower that doubled as a steam room , a massage table, and a swimming pool all in your own room

and they delivered breakfast to your door!

It may be "hokey" but it was fun!!!!

TOD:  Does making a charitable donation that allows you access to great theater tickets count as a luxury?  I'd say using the Broadway Cares and Actors Fund programs that got truly great tickets for otherwise impossible-to-get shows is the most luxurious treat I've given myself (or ourselves), as well as "overpaying" for some of the Actors Fund and Broadway Cares benefit performances.

Thursday morning greetings!  Sorry I left so abrubtly last night - while Richard and I were watching The Incredibles, we had an incredible thunderstorm during which I disconnected my computer.

TOD: Does quitting my job so that I could be a full-time student count?

Hope so, DR TPunk, 'cause my answer was going to be the time I spent as a (mostly) stay-at-home mom from 1985-1997. Walking away from a well-paying administrative job with associate professor rank totally changed my career trajectory, set me back about 7 years in the state retirement system, and took a huge chunk out of my earning potential.  Many people thought I was committing career suicide, but during those years I got to do some free-lance and volunteer things that never would have been possible had I been working full time.  I have never regretted a minute of those 12 years and often miss the unstructured puttering time that was plentiful then.

On a more tangible note, I love buying Longaberger baskets, Vera Bradley handbags & accessories, and Apple computers (I think Richard and I are going to get an iBook this weekend).

I think the must luxurious thing I've treated myself to was the latest HDTV I bought last year. I didn't need a new TV. I had a HDTV that was working just fine, but the new one offered a bigger picture, more inputs, and I talked myself into buying it. Haven't regretted it either as the picture is sharper and with more accurate color decoding than the last HDTV I had.

There are specials coming on various channels tonight I will be recording for later viewing. The SUPERMAN documentary (LOOK UP IN THE SKY) that bk watched on DVD a few weeks ago is being shown again tonight on A&E (and next week on The History Channel). I didn't catch it the last time it aired on A&E, so I want to see it tonight.

HBO has a special called BOFFO about the surprising hits and flops of the movie business that also sounds interesting.

Mawnin', y'all!

Most luxurious thing I've ever done for myself... stayed in showbiz, in spite of low earnings, unemployment, no insurance, no kids, no home, etc. The trade0off's leave no regrets - I've had lots of free time, when i DO work it's incredibly uplifting, satisfying, fulfilling; my colleagues are Artists; my family respects and enjoys what I do; my friends have always shown support and love - whatta wonderful life! That's a luxury that many people have told me they covet - and some "civilian" friends have taken my example, and just dropped out of society to live a simple and satisfying existence, doing Summer Vacation the rest of their lives.

AND - years ago my parents gave me a pearl necklace as a birthday gift. Well, I lost it - right off my neck - one night when I wore it to the theatah. I never told them I lost it. And I grieved. Often. So, recently, after they died, I bought myself a pearl necklace just like the one they had given me, to replace it! Very expensive - the most extravagant gift I have ever given myself - but, actually, it was THEIR money... THEY replaced it, after death. I take it out and look at it, touch it, wear it whenever the occasion allows - which, sometimes, is when I'm sitting at my desk, writing!!!

Lovely stories, DR PennyO.  Isn't it interesting that several of us have found luxury in lifestyle choices?

Title: Re:HOT HEAT

I'd have to say the most luxurious thing I treat myself to is the annual trip to London, England, with The Lovely Wife.  I refuse to travel coach that far and , so far, what with earned miles and two-for-one deals, we've always managed to go business class and have even once been bumped up to first class on Virgin Air which is great!  But business is luxurious enough.  We always stay in a flat right in the heart of theatreland, mostly one right on Upper St. Martin's Lane where we can walk everywhere in minutes.  I will also not stint on theatre tickets and will splurge on getting the best available.

Other luxuries I bestowed upon myself....Stays to San Ysidro Ranch and supping at their great restaurant, The Stonehouse, and a signed first edition of Tarzan of the Apes.

Speaking of luxury, I have done some things to treat myself well:

During my tour of duty in Naples, Italy (1987-1992), I treated myself  to a villa on a lake.  It WAS a luxury...quite a bit above what was "comfortable" to spend, but more than worth it for the joy it brought me...the comfort...the blissful feeling of waking up to a gorgeous day on a lake with cool breezes and a screened verandah on which I'd take my various repasts during my off-duty time (which was, believe it or not, generous).

In my small condo, there are small pleasures....like luxurious bath sheets and fine linens for my bed.  The true luxury, though, is the music and video that enters my life daily/weekly/monthly and the equipment on which it is played.

And then there is the theater, which is a luxury whether it's your life's ambition/vocation or simply a pleasure.  I've treated myself to some splendid (and so-so) entertainments over the past few years.

And then there is this Sunday when I will see Leslie Jordan in his one-man show "Like A Dog on Linoleum".

Hello all!  I'm feeling quite chipper today. Things are settling down at the office and I'm thoroughly enjoying not being in charge - a luxury if you ask me.

Plus I'm starting my holiday weekend tomorrow by helping Paul paint the Saturday in the Park logo on the water tower again this year.  They are doing some real goofy stuff to it, but we had so much fun last year I'm really looking forward to it.  One day of painting with my artist friends followed by another day of painting while we are serenaded with live music all day and then can enjoy the evening with the Neville Brothers and ChucK Berry.   should be a good time

I can make a recommendation for a film that really is Hitchcockian.  I just got it on DVD from the recent Deep Discount DVD sale.  It's the very early Powell/Pressburger effort Contraband.  It takes about 20 minutes for the story to really kick in, but once it does, it's very reminiscent of The 39 Steps.

I already knew to do that, but thanks for the reminder. I have no idea what's there (don't really know the basic plot of this one; have tried to stay "ignorant" of it to increase the potential pleasure), but I'm looking forward to seeing it, if not today, then at some point within the next week.

Luxuries....hmmm...I guess I look at living alone as a luxury all the time. Sure I have to do all the work, but I do pretty much what I want to do when I want to do it.  I still work, but I love working with my clients and now that I don't deal with being in charge of the petty everyday crap, it's not drudgery in any sence of the word.  Going back to work 3 weeks sooner than I had to tells me something. I like it here.

If "lifestyle" issues are indeed a "luxury" as a few other DRs suggested, then my decision to walk away from a management track job so that I could continue to live a life that meant something to me was indeed a luxury! I've mentioned it before but I had a meltdown 11 years ago and if I hadn't walked away from that meltdown I would, most likely, not be posting on this here site. Because I made the choice I now have the "luxury" of a happy life, a wonderful husband and many friends. I would choose that over my old job any time  :)

Along the lines of what others have said, I think that going back to grad school to pursue my passion (not just the year I took off from working full time) was my biggest, and certainly most expensive luxury. If I had stayed on in my previous job and then moved up in the exciting world of corporate entertainment HR, I'm sure I would currently be earning close to double what my starting salary as a Social Worker will be.  And while I would have happily kept Rodzinski in fur coats and diamond rings, I don't think I would be as happy or satisfied as I have been doing what I'm doing right now.

And I'm not knocking corporate entertainment or HR, I know I was able to do positive work and make contributions, but it's not my passion.

Also, I would buy faux fur for Rodzinski, not the real thing. :)

I suppose we all think of our parents as they were when we were young; I think of my late maternal grandmother as an old lady and my mother, who died at an older age than her mother, as young.   So, today, while we were waiting for the release, I was studying my dad, bald and cute as a button.  His false teeth don't fit well because he's lost so much weight so he's removed them till he can get to a dentist.  He looks like elmer Fudd!

When they told him this morning he could go home, I burst into tears.  I thought last Friday he would die there.  On the way back to my brother's, he drove me crazy with his backseat driving.  I was suddenly 16 again and learning to drive.  I was ready to make hiom walk home.

TCB .  Whatever happened with that role you were asked to do? Did you take it or no?

How is your hip healing?

It turned out that all the pleading the director of THE BAKER'S WIFE was doing was for for me to play the role of the Marquis, not the Baker.  There is nothing wrong with that role; but I have already done the role, so I declined.

Also, this infection has caused such a setback in my recovery that I just couldn't even consider doing a show this summer.

Today is my "Friday"...the next five days are mine to do with as I please.

Sounds great, DR Ron Pulliam!  This year our work schedule does not work in my favor:

Saturday - Work
Sunday - Off
Monday - Work
Tuesday - Off

And Tuesday (the actual 4th), I'm sort of working - walking in a parade with the Miami Valley Association of Volunteer Administrators.  It's the first parade I've been in since 1976, when DR Elmore dressed me in a bustle to portray a damsel in distress in a nineteenth century melodrama on our community theater float.

THE POSITIVE SIDE OF LIFE:

  Living on Earth is expensive,
but it does include a free trip
   around the sun every year.

   How long a minute is
depends on what side of the
   bathroom door you're on.

   Birthdays are good for you;
   the more you have,
   the longer you live.

   Happiness comes through doors you
didn't even know you left open.

Ever notice that the people who are late
   are often much jollier
than the people who have to wait for them?

Most of us go to our grave
with our music still inside of us.

If Wal-Mart is lowering prices every day,
how come nothing is free yet?

You may be only one person in the world,
but you may also be the world to one person.

Some mistakes are too much fun
   to only make once.

   Don't cry because it's over;
   smile because it happened.

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
   and all are different colors....but
they all exist very nicely in the same box.

A truly happy person is one who
can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

TCB - Plans keep changing.  Skip may be zooming in and out of Vancouver, WA - just seeing his show there, then heading on his way - while we both spend some time in and around Seattle first week in August, assuming all goes according to plan.  Don't know where we'll be staying Seattle-wise, but I'm sure it won't be luxurious.

I watched last night's CSI: NY. It was one I remembered seeing once I got into it, but I watched it until the end just killing time until I needed to leave for the movies.

This was the one about guys playing "urban golf" on the streets of NYC. The other case involved the death of a museum founder.

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut!"

The young man waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that. Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair...."

To which his father replied, "Yes, and they walked everywhere they went!"

Regarding Seattle - It's looking like LAST STARFIGHTER will be given a reading as part of the Village Theatre's Festival of New Musicals at some point in the first week of August.   The Village Theatre is in Issaquah, which is very near Seattle.   So now Skip has HERRINGBONE going on in Vancouver, Washington, and during that time, LAST STARFIGHTER will be presented in Issaquah, Washington.  What are the odds of two things happening in the same state at the same time?  At least 1 in 50.  (Oh, I guess those odds aren't that long, but still...)

Hmmm...wonder if there's any way to convince them to sell the Last Starfighter CD at the theater, or at least allow us to mention in the program how to buy the CD.

Congratulations!  I may try to see these. :)

Larry, Skip can't wait to cook for you again, with his new skills.

I thought he was a good cook before this class!

After much discussion, I've convinced the DP that we must try and do a HHW gathering on our trip to NYC.  We thought we'd just throw this out there.  We're thinking about gathering at Joe Allen's on Monday, July 3 at 5:30.  Who ever can be there, it would be great to meet you, if you can't, it's ok too.  It's early enough to eat and then get to a show (if we have one to go to).

Send me a private message if your interested!!!!

If there are any vibes to spare, maybe send some Walty's way.  His appetite has been a bit off for about a week.  We figured that it was just the heat, because until recently I would say that his personality hasn't been affected.  But then this morning he and Killbot had their kerfuffle.  And when I came home tonight I saw that he really hadn't eaten and he'd thrown up watery stuff (sorry for being so graphic folks).

And normally I would say, "TPunk, you are just being a worry wart because these are the first cats you've had as a full fledged adult grown up type person.  Just relax and give it a few days, he's probably fine." But- we are leaving for 10 days on Saturday and I won't be here to watch over him.  So I'm considering calling the neighborhood vet to see if they can squeeze him in tomorrow.

I would say that more than likely, it is just the heat.  But, you will feel better on your vacation if he sees a doctor.

Good point.  I would feel most better if he could tell me exactly what was going on, but I think it would take a lot of martinis for that to happen.

TPunk -  We've actually been talking about having the HHW New York group over again, after Larry gets back.  This time, we'll make sure it's a time when you and Tom can make it here.   (VIXMOM - I know you have trouble getting into the city, but maybe if we plan the date far enough ahead???)  Skip's one caveat is that he doesn't want to follow a full-day eating tour again like he did last year  :)

That sounds great. I will starve myself for a full 24 hours before hand.  Okay, maybe just 12.  ;)

Tomorrow begins the infamous Taste of Tacoma, just one long block from my front door.  This celebration of gluttony is infamous only to me, because I basically become a prisoner in my own apartment building.

The weather is supposed to be ideal this weekend, so we can expect even larger than normal crowds.  It certainly makes for good people watching, and the hot weather should limit the amount of clothing being worn to the event.

TPunk - I would call the vet and see if you can get him in. Not eating and vomiting are two signs of sickness - sometimes minor sometimes serious.  It doesn't hurt to check, especially since you'll be gone.

Today, at my office, an Audit Report was filed by the members of my unit and one other unit, regarding a cost saving project we completed over the past year.  Should the project report be singled out by headquarters, we would not only be given recognition of a job, above and beyond our regular activities; but we would also receive a monetary stipend of $10,000.00 per unit member.

For that reason alone, I don't expect us to be recognized.

Normally my home environment never gets too hot, but after an entire day with 100 degree heat outside, and the fact that I couldn't turn on the air to cool the house for an hour, it is really, really HOT.

Today I got the final notice on the bankruptcy claim I filed on behalf of my mother a few years ago. The lawyers and the state and federal revenue services got all of the assets of the defendant except $225, which went to someone else.

It's cooled off just a bit here, but I haven't opened the house up since it's not humid inside at all, and I'm afraid I'd lose that comfort if I opened up the windows now. I'll see what it's like when I head downstairs to bed in a little while.

I watched the last CLOSER episode from disc 3 tonight. This was the one with the three spoiled heirs being accused of the murder of their butler. One of the heirs was played by Douglas Sills. Very enjoyable episode, and I remember when I saw it the first time how sensational I felt how the final elimination of the suspects was handled. Brilliant.

The first OFFICE rerun tonight I watched as it was being broadcast. It was the hilarious Christmas episode where the boss gets stuck with a hand-knitted potholder for Secret Santa while he gave an ipod to his Secret Santa person. So, in a rage, he changes it from Secret Santa to a Chinese auction. He ends up with a bag of paintball pellets.

The CSI episode tonight was the only one I missed during the regular season, so I was able to see it tonight. It was a Nick Stokes-centered episode, so I'm glad I finally caught up with it even though the murder revolved around one of my least favorite things - rap music.

I then watched the second OFFICE episode rerun which I recorded while I was watching CSI. This was the episode dealing with Michael's burning his foot on a George Foreman grill, and then playing a disabled person for the remainder of the day. Painfully funny.

The thing is, he vomits a lot- pretty much since he was a kitten from what his previous owner told me.  He really enjoys eating and licking plastic (what am I missing?) and it often upsets his stomach.  Rodzinski and a friend of ours just got home and they think he seems fine but agree that it might improve MY peace of mind to take him to the vet.  I think I'll call in the morning and see if they can and/or think it's a good idea to bring him in.

I live in Olympia, which is about 100 miles or so north of Vancouver.  Couldn't the theater company videotape the show if Skip asks them...nicely...since he wrote it??

And I'd love to meet you AND see "The Last Starfighter," too!!
