Title: PUT ON YOUR SUNDAY CLOTHES
Post by: bk on July 02, 2006, 12:09:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you were in your Sunday clothes when you read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a Sunday kind of love and they can't be bothered now.

I made the tragic mistake of taking a short nap late yesterday afternoon that turned into five hours of sleep... I am still wide awake at this hour...

Back to solving the mysteries of unmarked tape...

I do have to say one of the tapes was fun  to find... Matt and Kevin on the same tape!!

A partial of episode of MASH with the charming as ever Monsieur Kimmel!!

And one program I am asking myself why I taped it.. It is some REALLY bad MOW!!!

I did find the tape I have been looking for that my friend Cassie had sent me from her personal tape collection.. Her hubby converted it from PALS to NTSC and it is an appearance of hte Chieftains on the Byrne show, A couple of episodes of a show called Ghlean Rua, and the Irish version of Wheel of Fortune.

THat should be the topic of my next book!!  Labeling essentails!!

OR should my new book topic be:

The fine art of Fast Forwarding....

the elements of timing commercials and painful scenes or just down right rotten programs...

Includes timing exercises and exercises to improve dexterity, yes dexterity...

Man two VCRS and one DVD player at a single fell swoop and not miss a minute!!

Ouch, George. You sister is selling your house out from under you?

No...not out from under me.  She had told me when I moved in that if I wanted to buy the house, she'd give me a real good deal, but actually, I don't want to buy the house.  There's nothing wrong with the house (except that it needs a new hot water heater) but I don't want to buy a house...I hate yard work. :P I don't want to do yard work, and since I'm old enough to make my own decisions, and I have a job and have paid off my credit cards, I can make my own decisions, which include deciding not to buy a house with a yard that requires yard work that I don't want to do. ;D

So, eventually I'll buy a condo or something like that.  But in the meantime, I have to clean the house because I haven't in a while. ::) So, we'll get the house ready and I'll probably get an apartment so that I can save some money for a down payment on something.  My parents gave my sister the empty lot where she built her house, but that's all they have, except for the house that they live in.  So, my sister said that after she sells the house, she'd give me half the value of the lot.  That'll start a nice savings account for my down payment and it won't take as long for me to save some money.  Well...that's the plan, anyway. :)

I have a couple hundred tapes and very few of them are marked.  I'm not too worried about it.  There are way too many that I've never even watched. ::) (I have a tendency to do that...tape or even buy something, then never watch it).

It's that old procrastinator gene, again. :P

Cool picture!

And on that note (low E-flat), I must go to bed.  I have a lot of cleaning up to do (after I wake up later in the morning).  Tonight, I'm going with my friend and her kids to a co-worker's house to see some fireworks where they live.  It's supposed to be pretty spectacular and since the co-worker's neighbors pay for the fireworks, it's all free to me!  Free is good. :)

I am waiting for the US release... I have a number of tapes from the classic series... The only doctor I do not have tapes of is the 6th doctor and I am not a fan of Colin Baker.

I found him arrogant after going to a SciFi fair in the Twin Cities and I met him there.

Yesterday was Grandlad Alex's birthday party.  He was (for the most part) well behaved.  So was Mommy.

But they're here in Rehoboth Beach today, so they can watch the fireworks tonight.  I'm not sure I want to go.  I don't like crowds, and it's going to be a mob scene downtown.  I don't like screaming, and Mommy is sure to do a lot of that.  And I've got a very early start time at work on Monday.

Bleh.

(Speaking of which, I'm off to earn my daily whatever.  Later.)

Working today.  NO try on the Trivia Question, yet!  But I will work on it.  Sounds intriguing.

I had a friend make a video copy of YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE for me, a movie that I love.  I ran out of blank video tapes, and I thought I would be interested in some damned Debbie Allen movie about the Apollo Theatre or something, so I put that tape in....it had run about to the middle, so I thought I was at the END of HAWKE.  Of course, I wasn't.  So now I have a STUPID dance movie that was AWFUL and only half of YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE.

Maybe it will be on television again sometime.

I like A SUMMER PLACE, of course, and ROME ADVENTURE, and SUSAN SLADE...and PARRISH and YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE.

Oh, I guess I like them all!

Good morning, all!  I believe I have some dad-sitting today, but till then, I will edit the Act One Finale of BABES IN TOYLAND (again!).

Now that my dad's out of danger for the nonce, I'm getting anxious to return to NYC.  I do love my family, but I've been here 10 days now and I miss my apartment.  I've got 9 more days, and I hope to spend several evenings visiting friends I haven't seen in some time.

Dylan has decided that New York is not the city in which he wants to live, so he's decided to head back to upstate New York for the rest of the summer.  I believe he'll be moving out the day before I arrive.  Does that sound like Gertrude Stein?

DR MBarnum, my only insurance advice about your accident is that you don't need to accept their first offer.

DR MBarnum, I just read about your accident. I am so sorry.  I think the instructor who passed that girl should get a talking to!

I'm sort of surprised that the girl's dad would let her drive before making sure that she was capable.

But I think that was lovely of you to be so generous towards her.  I"m sure was completely devastated.

Good morning. I awoke to a shrill meow from Bootsie when I opened the door she bolted downstairs. Well, you can imagine Callie bolted after her and we went from room to room. Finally Bootsie got to Callie's food and I can't get mad a Callie for hissing about that so I stepped in.

Bootsie's ear mites seem to be back.  The vet is closed today so I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to ease her discomfort (it's driving her crazy) until I can get in tomorrow.   This will also delay the two of them becoming friends a little. Those buggers are contageous and I don't need Cal getting them too.

I don't know that they will e ver be friends, but they came miles in the last 24 hours. Actually what happened is Bootsie realized that this is a big house and she's only in a little part of it, so she wants to wander and walks past Callie and they both hiss.

The funny thing is they have never gotten closer to each other than 3 feet. Isn't that a bit strange?

Cillaliz, when we used to foster for the pound, our personal cats got so used to seeing strangers come and go. They rarely squabbled. Of course, the visitors were usually kittens. Sasha made sure everyone's ears were clean.

EAR MITES!!! oy, vey...

I just had a couple of days to watch a new kitten play with a gigantic dawg - I know yer pets will make friends, after a bit. They can't help themselves... like kids, they just love to have a playmate and companion.

So, anyway, here I am, back at this incredibly magical cabin in the woods... got back last night. Neighbors in for the holiday weekend, with lots of friends staying over in tents on their meadow... one couple - lawyers - really very interested to see my place today. They  want to buy a weekend/summer house up here. While I was gone, they looked around the place and fell in love with the setting...

(Be careful what you wish for...)

I went over to say hi to my neighbors and met said lawyer couple, and as soon as the woman said she'd like to see my place, I felt very defensive and proprietary... but i will show them the place today. I wouldn't be letting it go this summer, at any rate. But I'd know where to find a buyer next year, if I wanted one... <sigh>

DR MattH, I love to travel, but once I'm set to return home, that's my focus.  My family, whom I dearly love, and I have always got along better with 500 miles between us and short sweet visits.  This one's almost three weeks so I'm getting antsy!

We also have a unified opinion of my dad's lady friend:  she's a twice widowed 81 year old who seems from her behavior in the past three months more interested in running around with him and spending his money than watching his health; I think he cares for her more than she does for him, and her presence certainly cheers him up, but he isn't the first old coot to be taken in.  She's also pentecostal, and she's told me how she knows THE DAVINCI CODE is inaccurate since she and Jesus are quite close.  Yep, there's a problem here.

No, not at all.  When my Vickie entered my household in 1988, I had a male named Dickens.

They squabbled and hissed and made my life miserable for three months -- THREE MONTHS!!!  They wouldn't eat in the same room together.  Because Dickens made it perfectly clear he would not deposit his poop into the same litter as Vickie, I had to get separate litter boxes and put them in different rooms!

At around the three-month mark, I had to be away for a weekend and a co-worker looked in on them and fed them.  When I returned, I was amazed to learn that they were sharing their food dishes, grooming one another and co-existing beautifully...even sleeping side by side.

When I got home, they were back at war.  It was ME!  Each was jealous of ME.  So I had to make concerted efforts to spend time holding each of them and praising them in front of one another....I'd invent reasons to scoop them both up and flop down on the bed with them and scratch their bellies.

I'd introduce a new toy they could both go crazy over and give each an opportunity to play with it.

I had to make them understand they could share.

I got my two time travel movies watched yesterday.  At the same time, sorta, I was finishing up a day-long task of cleaning out the linen closet in my bathroom.

It's a generous-sized cabinet, actually, floor-to-ceiling, and it's perfect for all my towlels, linens and pharmaceuticals/sundries.

Trouble is, they accumulate.  And the shelves are deep.  Once something's out of sight, I seldom investigate further than halfway back.  So I re-buy.

This was a long overdue cleansing.  Took much of my afternoon.  And I threw out quite a bit of stuff, some of which expired in 1998!

I have enough shampoo to last me til January 2008.  And don't even suggest I buy toothpaste til 2010 (but that's not my fault...that's Christmas stocking stuffer stuff...I'm forever bringing four or more tubes of toothpaste back from my Christmas trips back east).

I know most of this stuff won't be good for that long...but unitl it expires, I must keep it on the shelves.

Sigh.

At any rate...it's done...the countertop is clean and shiny and exposed to light once again...and the "stuff" is contained on two shelves, so my towels and linens can breathe sighs of relief, too.

Enjoy!! I have heard of that book. It is on my list of things to read... I am going to go outside and enjoy the nice weather and a book, "1949" by Morgan Llwellyn.  I have read the first two books in the trilogy.

Did you point out to her that The DaVinci Code is a work of fiction?

Good morning.  Or not.  I awoke to a frozen computer.  I shut it down.  The End.  The hard drive is officially dead.  I must now send in the computer to Apple and seven to ten days later I'll have it back with a new hard drive.  At that point, I can boot from my external drive and get everything back just the way it was, presuming the nightly backups have been working as they should.  In the meantime, I will have to do any computer work from a remote location.  Isn't that a fine kettle of fish?  So, everyone is on their own to keep the jernt alive and well.

I would hate, after five years, to miss a day of notes, but at this time I just don't know what will be.  If I have enough cash I may go buy a little iMac to use.  We'll see.

I watched two movies this afternoon. First up was the completion of CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE. It's a beautiful looking movie, but it's at least 20-30 minutes too long. Love the score, and no one can excel Tyrone Power in the beauty department.

The DVD of this will be among the great looking classic films.

Yes, it's like you're speaking a foreign language to them. They hear, see, and know only the things in their own minds. Rationality and commmon sense go right out the window. Very frustrating.

And I know what you mean about dealing with family. Despite the love one may have for them, they can be trying on the patience of an adult. My parents could never accept that I had grown up and didn't need to be directed by them any longer. That's the main reason I moved out of the town where they lived even though I continued to teach there.

bk, did you not save your old Dell when you went over to the Mac world? I still have an ancient laptop top here (uses Windows 98) that I use on Oscar and Tony night just because it's easy to set up and get on-line with. Not powerful enough for much of anything else, but it does come in handy for a back-up.

I'm afraid I'm at a point in my life where I can't be without a computer now. I have to be sure there is at least one here that works.

And as I was folding clothes after doing laundry, I watched the filmed version of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE which happened to be being telecast on one of the HBO channels. I think the one taped in CEntral Park, with everyone singing live as in a theater, works so much better than this "canned" version despite having many of the same cast members.

Well, at this moment the Moore family collective panties are in a bunch!  My father's been off with his lady friend for over 3 hours, we don't know where he is or when he's returning so all our lives are on hold this this old biddy returns him.  The fact that the man was near death a week ago doesn't seem to bother his friend too much; she mentioned that they were going sho[[ing after their lunch, and I hope she doesn't have him carrying her groceries and other purchases.  I'm sure he was beginning to get a bit stir-crazy at my brother's but I don't want him out for too long a stretch until I know he's in better shape.  Welcome to KING LEAR.

I may be jailed tonight for kicking an old bag to deay

Nicky joined our household four years ago this September; and not a day goes by that Angel doesn't find a reason to hiss at her brother.  Of course, he is a boy, and he is built like Steve Reeves; so he really wants to rough house.  Angel, on the other hand, is thirteen years old, and is frail like her father; so she doesn't enjoy his idea of fun.

But they still love each other!

Oh, I'm in for the long haul, it's just frustrating.  It went so smoothly for Callie and Nilla, in 3 days they were curled up on the couch together and they were that close until Ihad to put him to sleep.  So, I just have to get used to the idea that it's different this time.   I'm trying to spend more time with both of them.   Boo is in the office with me while I work on the computer.  Callie and I played downstairs for a long time this afternoon.  I separated them for the rest of today, and that has really calmed both of them down.  Tomorrow is another day....

Is Monday night July 3 a possibility?

I got to my brother Tom's around 6:30, just as my dad's friend and he were unloading a carton of needless groceries.  I threw a huge fit about his wasting my day and my brother's and how he shouldn't have been out for over 5 hours.  His friend said she heard a deadline of 6:oo and my brother tom let her know that the discussion was a couple of hours, not a 6 PM deadline.  I'm sure she left in a huff hating our collective guts, but what the hey?

Posting from home, but on Vinnie's computer, but with my backup drive.  So, we know that we can boot up from my external drive perfectly - in fact, it's amazing.  We boot off my drive and his computer is suddenly MY computer.  We almost got my dead computer to boot off it, but it hangs up about the 3/4 point, which leads Vinnie to believe that it could be more than just the hard drive that's dead.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to call an authorized Mac store in Encino where Vinnie had work done on his hard drive.  If they're working tomorrow, I might be able to bring it in and have them fix it there, as they take the AppleCare warranty.  Otherwise, I have to ship it to Apple and it takes seven to ten days, although my computer guy says that it sometimes takes less.  We shall see.  I have the use of this computer for about ninety minutes now, so I'll do tomorrow's notes now and just post them with tomorrow's date.

I just returned from a birthday celebration of my Uncle Bud's 80th...his old high school buddy Arnie Lindstrom (I think that was his name) was also celebrating his 80th along with a gal named Doris, who I think was related to Arnie somehow....there were several gals there that resembled you!

No, I don't have that sort or relative in Portland. It was my sister's ex-husband and his family. So, if someone resembles me she is just lucky I guess... ;)

Sounds almost like the mother board and power unit are about kapoot!!

Thanks. It's a lot of fun. There are a number of people involved and we all look forward to it every year.

I might be able to get an old titanium powerbook to use until mine is fixed.  I just don't know if that store is working tomorrow or off until Wednesday, in terms of taking the computer there for fixing.  We shall see.

Cillaliz, I didn't realize that you were 80.

I think we're going to The Devil Wears Prada tomorrow. Has anyone seen it?

Well, things are quiet on the kitty front.  I spent a couple hours with Boo and a couple hours with Cal. They saw each other once and there was just a quick hiss, then Boo went back to sleep and Cal went back into the hallway. I think slowing down has helped a lot.  Thanks everyone for your support on this.

Had some fun viewing experiences tonight. The first one wasn't fun: THE BROTHERS GRIMM which I found absurd.

The screenwriter takes bits and pieces of a dozen or so Grimms' fairy tales and weaves this ridiculous, ugly fantasy around the real-life brothers. That's two hours of my life never to be seen again.

Gilliam has a fanciful way of dealing with outrageous plots, but this didn't work for me.

COLD CASE was much more entertaining. Again, it was a rerun that I hadn't seen before, and I did guess the identity of the murderer before it was revealed.

I still can't decide if I really like watching it. It's a novelty and fun once in awhile, but I have my own images I like to think of when I listen to it

But, on the radio you can't see:

-Garrison's red socks and sneakers
-The tattoo on the upper arm of one of the Wailin' Jennys
-Meryl Streep wiping away tears during America the Beautiful

DEADWOOD advanced the plot of the town's new bank with some funny and interesting developments. Wonderful show.

ENTOURAGE I was pleased to see found a way to dispense with the ex-con character. Bruno Kirby guest starred, and I barely recognized him.

And I finished the evening with LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT, a rerun I had seen but was slow in remembering its conclusion. Once I got to the part where I remembered everything about the case, I erased the show off the DVR.

Don't know what things I'll be watching tomorrow. I recently got the fourth season of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW. It might be time to crack that box open and get to watching it. I also have THE WILD WILD WEST to proceed into the third disc in that set.

Still have some POIROT films I haven't watched from the latest boxed set (though I did see CARDS ON THE TABLE on A&E). I might go back to one of the prior POIROT films and rewatch them. With there being so many of them, I don't remember the guilty parties on all of them. MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA might be a good one to revisit.

On Comcast, every once in a while they have preview episodes shows and right now you can watch an entire episode of "Monk" and a preview of a new show called "Psych (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491738/)" (you can't search for it, you just have to find it), which doesn't actually start until this coming Friday.  I didn't watch "Monk" but "Psych" is pretty good.  It's about a guy played by relative newcomer, James Roday (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0734442/), who has very, very, very (that’s three verys) developed observational skills (when he was a kid, his dad, played by Corbin Bernsen, made him practice...he then rebelled and they're estranged).  He's more like a Sherlock Holmes for the 21st century but he pretends to be a psychic and works on a case, which he solves.  There is, of course, a lot more to it.  It also stars Dulé Hill as his best friend and reluctant partner in a pretend "psychic detective agency" that they open by the end of the episode.  It's going to be on the USA Network and so far, so good!

Okay, switching to new topic and day, even though we have a rather pathetic number of postings.  Perhaps Ann will post one of these fine centuries.
