Title: LET'S TWIST AGAIN
Post by: bk on July 07, 2006, 12:08:57 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you twisted like you did last summer whilst reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the contrary cows come home - they're not twisting, they're doing The Jerk.

I have been most errant and truant these last several evenings.  Mostly because I have my annual evaluation in the morning and one of the things that I wrote that I need to work on is coming to work at a consistent time...I have been getting in anywhere from 9:30 to 10:30 (my regular time is supposed to be 10:00 a.m.).  I'm not a morning person and it seems to be getting worse.  So, I've been trying to get to bed earlier so that I can get up earlier and get to work on time (especially this past week).

It's still not too consistent ::) but I continue to make the attempt. :)

Every time I hear or read the name Gunther, I think of the original cast recording to Das Barbecü and the way J. K. Simmons (I think) pronounced it "Goonther." ;D

BK, is Jeanne absolutely sure that it's YOU in the picture??  I mean, with the arm slightly in the way, it might be someone who looks a lot like you, but isn't.  Just a thought. ;)

Music: The film scores for "The Mission" and "The Legend of 1900" and Also David Hobson's Cd "Cinema Paradiso".

I'm still listening to Andrea Griminelli's "Cinema Italiano" most days.

In my CD player at work:  the original cast recording of Do Re Mi with Phil Silvers and Nancy Walker.

Do Re Mi had the most unique LP Jacket of any cast album ever produced. It was thicker than usuually and it had die cut holes on the front so when you slid theLIP sleeve into it (dayglo orange color?) The drawn image and show logo would appear. The cd cover duplicates what it looked like intact, but cannot duplicate what it looked liked. It was part of my collection before cds came around and my rarities no longer were rare.

DVD Player:

DOCTOR WHO - The Complete First Season

Fantastic.

So far, I'm concentrating on the extras.  We've watched the bonus material on Disc One, and the first five eps of Doctor Who Confidential, the documentary series that aired with the stories.  Nice of the Beeb to do that, I think.

Der Brucer is watching it all with me, of course.  I think he was a mite disappointed when I opted to take a nap yesterday afternoon, after the fifth DWC.  So much for his calling the show "that stupid thing."

(In all fairness, I call the crime proceedurals he's addicted to his "happy shows.")

I had to point out to der B that, when re-folded correctly, the outside of the DVD case looks like the TARDIS from the outside.  And the inside of the case looks like the TARDIS from the inside.  Only, I'm not really sure it looks larger on the inside than it does from the outside.  Sad, that.

I've got to dig through my food book collection.  (Koob doof, for the cognoscenti.)  I finished Bourdain's Nasty Bits, except for his fiction piece at the end, and I really don't care for his fiction.  And I've always got a book about food with me at the store, for reading during breaks (and occasionally sparking conversation with the customers).

So, I've got to find something different to take with me today.  Bookwise.

Hi all!  Sorry to have been E & T.  There have been rainstorms almost everyday so I couldn't take the laptop to work for fear I would get caught in one of them.

They say it will rain again today as well....   Grrrr.

Wouldn't you know my starting to use the laptop would start the rainy season?

I have a case of the dreaded Swimmers Ear.   You would think one would have had to go swimming to get it but not so.  I didn't bother to dry my to short hair the other night and woke up with pain in my ear.

Of course, since I have had this before I knew exactly what I needed.  I called the doctor to phone in a perscription but would they do it?  Noooo.  They want their twenty dollar co pay.

So I had to take time off from work, drive to Brandon, sit in the waiting room, didn't even SEE the doctor just her aid--who took one look in my ear, confirmed my diagnois (wow what a shocker!) and took another half hour of getting the doctor to sigh the perscription.   Sigh.

Good morning, all!  I spent the evening at my friend Alan's house; his wife is in Italy while her mother goes through a hip replacement, his daughters were off to a preview of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and we ate pizza, watched tv, talked about his travels and my travails.

I believe I will breakfast with my Dad, run whatever errands he would like to do and work on the last number from BABES IN TOYLAND I have here.  Tonight, my brother, father and lady friend are joining my sister-in-law in Indiana for a weekend of fishing.  I'm thionking about driving over tomorrow morning to spend the day, but I need to confer with DR Ginny about our movie date.

My dad just called.  I'll will return!

VCR:  THE MIRACLE with Carroll Baker as a nun who leaves the convent for Roger Moore - wearing one of the riding jackets from AUNTIE MAME disguised as an English calvary officer jacket....and one of her corsets, too, if Miss Baker is to be believed, and why shouldn't she?

DVD:  LIL ABNER, a $5 purchase from WalMart.

CD:  Son of the Pink Panther music by Henry Mancini.  I am using this music in DEATH BY CHOCOLATE and it actually works rather well.

iPod:  Patsy Cline--Showcase--just another compilation within nothing new, but it's Patsy Cline so no complaints here.

Tivo:  FIFTH OF JULY, which I recorded the other night from the VHS tape I purchased from Broadway Archive a few years back.  Also, the silent WIZARD OF OZes that were broadcast on TCM earlier this week.

I noticed the DVR this morning recording A DATE WITH JUDY off TCM. A few weeks ago, I dragged out the laserdisc, and it was a very soft, lackluster transfer. If you remember the vivacious color from the excerpt in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT (especially how incredibly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor looked), you will know why I'm recording this movie today and hoping it's a much better print used for broadcast.

I know that very few of you are INTO the Big Brother series, but I'm a die-hard fan and have followed each season with equal doses of jubilation and outrage (last year's outcome was OUTRAGEOUS, but it's one instance of true losers winning).

Last night's show, pre-recorded!!!!!, saw 14 people placed in the house (8 of whom --designated by * - were the results of public votes):

From BB6 -- Kaysar*, Howie*, James* and Janelle*
From BB5 -- Jase*, Diane* and Nakomis*
From BB4 -- Alison and Ericka*
From BB3 -- Danielle and Marcellas
From BB2 -- Dr. Will and Mike "Boogie"
From BB1 -- "Chicken" George

SPOILER!

In this first show, Big Brother surprised everyone by allowing the public to put 8 people into the house because, according to Julie Chen, the voting was so close.

Once folks were settled in, Julie suprised the "houseguests" by telling them two people would be Head of Household.  And their mission was to nominate two people for eviction.  The catch:  If they couldn't agree on both nominees, each would be placed up for eviction in place of anyone else.

Jase and Janelle were the co-Heads of Household winners.

Danielle was the one who sussed out the import of that development and tried to plant the seed of discord by suggesting to Alison and George that if Jase could be convinced to disagree with Janelle then Jase would have "numbers" on his side and Janelle would be evicted, thus eliminating one of the four BB6 alliance that returned from last year.

It was a good idea, but Danielle didn't reckon on Alison overplaying it and putting Jase on his guard.

Both HOH's agreed...and Danielle and Alison were nominated for eviction.  I'm guessing there will be a veto competition, so all is not set in stone.

Mike "Boogie" and Dr. Will were both extremely obnoxious in the diary room.  Personally, I'd have put up both Will and Mike...Will needs to go since he's the only "former winner" in the house.

Interestingly, Danielle and Alison are the only two in the house who finished second in their seasons...each having been reviled by most of the houseguests of their years.

Very little was seen in this first episode of Marcellas or Ericka or Diane or Nakomis, and only a bit of James, Howie and Kaysar.

Danielle and Alison did a lot of scheming and trying to get things going hardcore right off the bat.

It should be an interesting summer.  I have favorites, but I'm just going to sit back and let it all happen in front of me without investing any emotions.  Last year's brouhaha wiped me out.

(Players I hated seeing left out were Bunky, Monica,Dana and Ivette, especially since CBS picked "Chicken" George over them as the final contestant to enter the house.  Of all who didn't get in, I was rooting mostly for Ivette since she seemed determined to be a different person from the crazed bitch she seemed to be last summer. CBS also picked Dr. Will and Mike "Boogie"...a very predictable thing, that.  Oddly, Marcellas didn't get a popular vote substantial enough to put him in the house, but he was one of CBS' six entries.)

I have a feeling that the ones not placed in the house may be inserted at later dates.  Just a hunch.

I have a feeling that the ones not placed in the house may be inserted at later dates.  Just a hunch.

Now, THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! An excellent condensation of last night's events. I turned it off after the selections since I was disgusted that neither Bunky nor Monica got in. It would be great if the "losers" could have a chance to get in, even if it was to mix up the numbers.

A friend called later to tell me about the two head of household stuff since he knew I'd have turned it off immediately when my favorites didn't get picked. I had read some spoilers on the internet so I kind of knew that my favs weren't going in anyway, but I hoped against hope that CBS was bamboozling the public with false information. Alas, no.

Hate Groups Are Infiltrating the Military, Group Asserts
By JOHN KIFNER

A decade after the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance policy for racist hate groups, recruiting shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq have allowed "large numbers of neo-Nazis and skinhead extremists" to infiltrate the military, according to a watchdog organization.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and right-wing militia groups, estimated that the numbers could run into the thousands, citing interviews with Defense Department investigators and reports and postings on racist Web sites and magazines.
"We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," the group quoted a Defense Department investigator as saying in a report to be posted today on its Web site, www.splcenter.org. "That's a problem."

The report cited accounts by neo-Nazis of their infiltration of the military, including a discussion on the white supremacist Web site Stormfront. "There are others among you in the forces," one participant wrote. "You are never alone."

An article in the National Alliance magazine Resistance urged skinheads to join the Army and insist on being assigned to light infantry units.

The Southern Poverty Law Center identified the author as Steven Barry, who it said was a former Special Forces officer who was the alliance's "military unit coordinator."

"Light infantry is your branch of choice because the coming race war and the ethnic cleansing to follow will be very much an infantryman's war," he wrote. "It will be house-to-house, neighborhood-by-neighborhood until your town or city is cleared and the alien races are driven into the countryside where they can be hunted down and 'cleansed.' "

He concluded: "As a professional soldier, my goal is to fill the ranks of the United States Army with skinheads. As street brawlers, you will be useless in the coming race war. As trained infantrymen, you will join the ranks of the Aryan warrior brotherhood."

All I can say is I am happy to see Kaysar's handsome face again!

Most of my BB favorites were not up for insertion into season 7...they likely all have lives now....I would have preferred Bunky over Marcellas to be sure...but I would not have minded having both in there.

Wow, DR MattH, I"m surprised that you were turned off by so many BB6ers. I couldn't be happier, since they were my favorites.  But it was so obvious that people like kaysar and janelle (fan favs) would get in.

Plus with the leak on tues we already knew who would be in the house.

And for anyone who wants to read the Jam live feed spoilers here is the link:

I would highly recommend reading these if you like Big Brother. It is nothing like Survivor or TAR spoilers. It really makes watching the show a 100% better.

A friend of mine recommended HEX from BBC America. Supposedly it's like CHARMED with more bite to it. I've never watched CHARMED, but my friend got me interested enough in the HEX premise to give it a try.

Does anyone watch this? (or CHARMED, for that matter?)

My niece LOVED "Charmed."  She taped every episode and since gotten the DVDs.  I think she got some converted NTSC VHS copies of "Hex" from eBay and she likes that, too.  I don't know if she likes it better than "Charmed" or not, though.  I haven't watched more than a scene or two of "Charmed."

Hmm, I just wrote that Big Brother post before reading page 3. I'm glad some people posted their comments!

All of the people i vote for got in: (in order) janelle, kaysar, erika, howie, james and marcellas.

Re: last night's show.

I like danielle. Her idea was brilliant. But i'm glad that jase saw through it. You can never no matter what put yourself up on the block. Janelle could have won POV. Or the group could have changed their mind. I'm glad that jase lied to alison and danielle.

I really dislike alison so i hope that she goes. I'm torn about danielle. I do like her, but she is clearly gonna cause trouble for janelle. I really hope that erika and marcellas join with the BB6ers.

I also like Dr. Will for entertainment purposes. But i'm sure he will cause a lot of trouble.

BTW, there is an oval mirror behind him with a dark frame, which makes him look like he has big hair. He did not. He had perfectly normal, nice hair. And, JRand55, he was wearing a suit and tie--no tuxedo.

What Sondheim shows did they promise last year?

And OH, BOY!  That "Candide" release is WAY OVERDUE!

Last year BMG planned re-releases of SWEENEY TODD, MERRILY, INTO THE WOODS and SUNDAY/GEORGE with bonus material, but they never happened.

I'm also thrilled with the CANDIDE CD (I hope the Lisbon earthquake is still as thunderous.)

All that would remain on my wish list is the Public Theater THREEPENNY OPERA with Raul Julia.

Maybe they'll get around to releasing GRINDL, THE COMPLETE SERIES on DVD.

I've never watched that at all...mostly because they're all very young and the kind of music that they mostly sing isn't what I'm interested in listening to.  At least "America's Got Talent" (but not all of America) showcases a very wide range of ages and talent levels.  And they don't make too much fun of the people who don't have "it."

Next I checked out the TCM broadcast of A DATE WITH JUDY. It was so beautiful, so sharp (except in close-ups of Powell and Taylor) and Technicolorful that I immediately bruned a DVD-R right then and there. The laserdisc goes instantly into storage.

The movie is too long for what it is, and since everyone has to get multiple moments in the spotlight, it extends things so Carmen Miranda can do a couple of numbers and Xavier Cugat likewise in addition to Powell's arias throughout. Good thing Wallace Beery and Robert Stack couldn't sing or dance (much).

BTW, there aren't many more gorgeous couples ever in the movies than Elizabeth Taylor and Robert Stack in this movie.

Next came last night's CSI, a rerun of the season's next-to-last episode featuring the brutal murder of lawyer Veronica Cartwright. I remembered that the episode featured multiple narrators, but I didn't remember the identity of the murderer at all, so it was a good episode to revisit.

And it also had George Eads with that godawful Beatles haircut shaved off. Hopefully, he won't let it grow back for next season's episodes.

We're still having a few problems with her but I don't think I'll be taking her back.  I honestly like her.  She's full of fire and pepper.

I have this very cute video I shot of her and Bear.  The camera is just on Bear.  Then zooom! There goes Sheena running though the shot.  Bear turns to look that way and zoooom there runs Sheena though the other side of the shot.  All the time she's barking and pulling a trash bag that I had out to pick up some yard waste.

Bear looks so confused as she runs all around him.  I might have to try to post that one.

When I taught school, we were evauluated every three years. It was an elaborate process of completing forms and having scheduled and unscheduled (surprise) visits from the principal. During and after each visit (one scheduled, two surprise), the principal would meet to look at lesson plans for the class he had just observed, inspect grade books, look at tests and how they were graded, etc. It only happened every three years because all of this took an enormous amount of time in addition to the principal's other duties, and so the faculty had to be divided into three parts, and even then, assistant principals and the guidance director often did the evaluations rather than the principal.

I've sent an email out to the "animal people" I know. We'll see what comes of it.  I'm also going to ask my neighbor when he gets home and offer to be a cat sitter whenever necessary. Well, I (finally) just ordered "Doctor Who:  The Complete Series" and have signed up (for a trial period of time) for Amazon Prime, where I can get them delivered at the two-day shipping for free!  So, my order should arrive on Tuesday, instead of a couple of weeks or three from now.  I intend to opt-out of the service BEFORE the $79 fee kicks in.  I've always chosen the free shipping option and have not minded the extra wait time...so far.

Oh, no blood shed or injuries in the attack. Just one terrified little black kitten.

If they're not harming one another, you really should consider giving them more time to adjust.

Callie obviously has no use for a "new" cat after finding herself the "sole" cat in your house.

That terrified kitty will grow and defend herself.

And I'm betting Callie wouldn't be antagonistic toward Boo when you aren't around/in the room.

Now who says you can't do the gathering in Tacoma?   If you left now.............. drove all night and all day tomorrow......... took a half hour nap at the rest stop, and then drove the rest of the way; why, you would be here in plenty of time?

I'm still tempted but . . .

Sad news to report - Laura Elliot, aka Kasey Rogers, aka Mrs. Guy Haines, has passed away from cancer.  She was a fantastic, warm and wonderful woman who I'm happy to have known for the last six years.

Well, I've put the word out that I'm looking for a home for her. If I can find a good home, I will let her go.  But I'm being very picky. She'll be here in the meantime. I don't plan to put them together again.  We'll see

That is very sad  :'( and I am very sorry Bruce, I know you really liked her.

She was a swell woman, and she lived until eighty - pretty damn good.  Her performance as Mrs. Haines is one of the all-time great performances in a Hitchcock film.  I will watch Strangers On A Train this weekend in her honor.

Just came back from the Colony Hotel where I saw Jeff Harnar perform his 1959 Broadway Songbook show (also available on cd).

Alex Rybeck was a the piano and did the great arrangements. I have been fortunate to get to know Alex these past few years as he has played the piano for several of the performers I have seen live including Jason Graae, Liz Callaway and Faith Prince.

Did I miss anyone?

Watched about five MARY TYLER MOORE episodes tonight before the USA season premieres started. Three of my all-time favorite MTM shows were on the first disc of the 4th season -

"The Lars Affair" which introduced Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens who was stealing Cloris leachman's husband out from under her nose.

Cloris won the Emmy that year for her performance in this episode.

"The Lou and Edie Story" in which Mr. and Mrs. Grant separate which of course became permanent.

Writer Triva Silverman won the Emmy that year for writing the best comedy episode of that season. She was also named Series Writer of the Year.

"Lou's First Date" where by a mistake, Lou Grant is "fixed up" with an 80 year old woman for his first date after his wife left him.

All superb episodes.

I also began watching YOLANDA AND THE THIEF. Hadn't seen it in awhile, and after the sticky sweet A DATE WITH JUDY today, I guess I wanted to see an MGM musical with a little more sophistication. Didn't get very far into the movie - perhaps 35 minutes, so will have a good portion of it to watch tomorrow.

I got the idea for watching it from seeing the "Coffee Time" excerpt in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III yesterday.

I just read this and excuse me if it has been mentioned.

But it was revealed that actor Benjamin Hendrickson from Another World committed suicide. I am sure his friends and co-stars are wondering if they could have helped him. But he must have been so troubled not to reach out to his friends and family.

MONK had an OK season premiere episode, but as wonderful an actor as Stanley Tucci is, I didn't think the writers got everything out of him that could have been gotten with him in the episode.

Certainly were some good laughs, however.

Vinnie came over, but unfortunately we couldn't do the clone because we have to get the serial number from the backup program company and they won't be back until Monday.  Stupid.  They send the serial number in an e-mail, which I saved.  But, when the computer was going nuts about five days' worth of e-mail saves got nuked, including that one.  So, we're booted up again off the external drive and I'll work this way until we can clone the hard drive come Monday (or sooner if they get my e-mail and send it again).

And then the series premiere of PSYCH. It was funny and certainly different. I enjoyed about 85% of it. The 15% I didn't like were because of Dule Hill as his wise-ass, constantly complaining partner-in-crime. I mean, I get his purpose in the show, but that constant complaining and criticizing grew very tiresome to me over the course of a 90 minute premiere. I hope that aspect will be downplayed a bit on subsequent episodes.

I see that the DVR will be recording this week's LOVESPRING INTERNATIONAL (which is being rerun tonight). I wanted to see it since Eric McCormack (who also produces the show) is guest starring on it as a character very removed from Will Truman. Should be fun to see that.

I have the "season pass" button on now so I won't miss any more of the episodes due to my senility.

Got the serial number via e-mail, so Vinnie will come back tomorrow and we'll do the clone then.  Now, the question is do I eat anything else?  I ate at eleven-thirty, and still feel slightly full - I had three eggs, bacon, some hash browns (not that much), a salad with ranch dressing, and about a quarter of a piece of pie.  Hmmm.

After work, I went shopping.  I didn't specifically plan on "shopping," but I bought some things on impulse (never a good thing...but not bad, this time).  A few days ago, Top Foods was advertising Diet Pepsi on sale.  But alas and alack, when I went there today, the sale was no more. :( But they did have 12-packs of some other drinks on sale (just not Diet Pepsi), so I got some (all diet).

Here is something interesting I learned today.  I was playing my iPod through my mini-speakers near the computer.  It started making all sorts of weird noises.  I unhooked all the plugs, pulled the iPod out, put it all back and still it made awful noises.  And do you know what the cause was?  I was on my cell phone and that was causing some sort of weird interference.  As soon as I shut off the cell everything was fine.

This isn't that unusual.  There are some electronic devices that have a warning that they may cause interference and may have to accept interference from other devices (like it's made so that it specifically doesn't prevent it).  It's a pain when it happens, that's for sure. :P
