Title: FULL STEAM AHEAD

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a full head of steam, and now it is time for you to post until the steamy cows come home.

As promised, here is the flyer for the LACC cabaret series.  It would really be fun to see any West Coast hainsies/kimlets, and that includes lurkers, and also visitors from other cities.

Good Monday Morning all!  I'm so glad the mini gathering went so well.  :)

I wish I had better news about being able to make it to NY in the fall but I think that hope is gone.  I've had to use to much of time for doctor appointments.    Sigh.

It doesn't take long to use your time but it sure takes forever to build it up.

This is the lowest I've ever been on my vacation/sick leave bank.  I'm really worried that if something major happens I will have to take time off with no pay.

I'm so sorry your having such problems with your kittys, DR Cillaliz.

I confess I was having the same thoughts about Sheena, Queen of the Jungle but the little booger got to me.  I wouldn't think of giving her up now.

She is a problem and a handful but she sure does spice the house life up!  :)

And she LOVES the little pool I bought for her and Bear.  Bear will step into it from time to time but Sheena rolls around in it.   She isn't afraid to put her nose under the water and blow bubbles either.

She tries to "dig" in the water and can't seem to figure out why she doesn't leave a hole.  Of course, it she doesn't watch it, she will put a hole in the side of the pool.

I'll have to try to post some pictures I took of her and Bear at the pool at the dog park.

She found a little beagle to play with while at the park and the two of them just took off running and playing with each other.   I thought she was a little rough with the beagle but his owners didn't seem to mind.  They were tell her to get him!

I am my own frenzy!

DR Elmore, I am glad that your Dad is doing better.  Mom has her good days and her bad ones.

I am most unhappy with her doctor.  I am thinking of removing her from that doctors care.  In fact, I am thinking of removing her from the Humana plan and moving her to Medicade (sp?).

I still have my swimmers ear but it is getting better.  Sometimes my ear "cracks" and I can hear alright but then it plugs right back up.  I'll give it a few more days but if it still isn't all the way cleared up, I shall have no choice except to return to the doctor.

Good morning, al!  I'm off for breakfast with my dad and brother in a few minutes.  At 10:20, round 3 of chemo begins.  I honestly don't know how this round will affect him, and I'm hoping it isn't so horrible that I need to cancel tomorrow's flight.  I feel that my visit was profitable but too long, and I'm homesick for Manhattan.

I had peculiar dreams last night, but I feel they're prompting me to write a piece about/for my dad.  I'm not sure what it is, but there are lots of melodies dancing around in my head from old Baptist hymns to country fiddles.  My dad was born in Fallsburg, KY, on Dec. 14, 1921, deep in the coal mining area of Appalachian Kentucky.

DR Cillaliz, the book's tone and storyline are different; the screenplay's decision to remove a crucial character meant rethinking sections of the plot toaccommodate things.  Changes:
  1.  Andrea is from Ohio, not Connecticut and her family is drastically reduced.
  2.  A roommate with a drug problem.
  3.  The number of demeaning and futile tasks Miranda assigns her.

I liked the book, and I liked the film quite a lot.  I'd recommend you read it.

DR Jose, I'm hopefully back tomorrow!

And so to breakfast!

TOD - Are we talking specifically the LP cover or the LP packaging?  If the whole LP packaging, I enjoyed the shrine :) to Sondheim in the MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG LP as well as the THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE movie LP, which opened up like a great big hilarious book.  LP covers -  I love the HELLO DOLLY movie LP cover and the Cyndi Lauper cover for SHE'S SO UNUSUAL, as well as Don McLean's AMERICAN PIE.

Unquestionably my favorite album cover of all time was the foil cover of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. That deco design with the foil just SCREAMED classy, and I adored it. The CD cover doesn't even rank as a pale reflection of the majesty of that cover.

A CHORUS LINE's foil cover was pretty nice, too.

Yes, DR George, the nice thing about missing shows on most cable channels is that there's a almost always a rerun somewhere on the schedule before the next new episode airs.

Of course, I haven't watched RENO 911! yet (or the other things I recorded last night). I'll get to them this afternoon after lunch with best friend John.

I also just signed up for a free energy audit of my house by MidAmerican Energy.  I know I need more insulation and if it's recommended, MidAmerican will pay up to 70% of the cost of putting it in!  They also give you free lightbulbs, insulation for pipes if necessary and insulation for a water heater if necessary as well as make suggestions for making your home more efficient.  Cool beans...

In other news...

And, DR TCB, this is the news you've been waiting for... Well, part of it at least...

I will be Music Directing a benefit concert reading of Marcy Heisler's and Zina Goldrich's Dear Edwina for the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater here in New York City.  Yes, it is a children's show, and it's being presented by a company named "Rattlestick"...  Rattlestick is dedicated to nurturing and producing the works of new and upcoming playwrights, and they are looking to expand their audience base by presenting some more family-friendly fare - thus, the presentation of Dear Edwina.

We're just running for three performances about two weeks from now.  I'll be working with a wonderful cast and production team.  And, needless to say, it's just nice to be working on a show again.  Dear Edwina (and Dear Edwina, Jr. has been around for a couple of years, but it's never been produced in NYC even though Zina and Marcy - or Goldrich and Heisler, if you prefer - have had a pretty good record on the cabaret front.  They wrote one of Kristin Chenoweth's signature songs, "Taylor, the Latte Boy".

For more info, just check out Rattlestick's homepage at:

http://www.rattlestick.org (http://www.rattlestick.org)

As I get more details, I'll pass them on.

And as the final rounds of casting for Disneyworld's upcoming Finding Nemo show continue over the next couple of weeks, I have been asked to be "in the room" for the remaining sessions.  :)

I have to say that the couple of days of auditions I've already played have been pretty wonderful.  Great people in front of the table - the people auditioning - and great people behind the table - the production staff.  I've even managed to bond with some of the actors and actresses who came through the door.  I have about three or four more auditions days coming up, and even though I know I won't be down in Florida once the show goes into rehearsals, a trip down to Orlando would just be a bonus at this point.  *Not that I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to spend the fall in Orlando.  ;)

-And the songs - by Robert Lopez (Avenue Q and his wife, Kristen - are pretty darn catchy.  And after playing them countless times already - and sometimes in different keys(!) - I'm not tired of playing or hearing them.  They still make me smile.

Again, I really am hoping that there was no one else in the building at the time of the explosion.  At this time, "they" are saying that everyone is accounted for.  Yes, there were some people injured seriously as a result of the explosion, including some firemen, but no deaths have been reported.  Let's hope it stays that way.

Well, this explains why the building was included:

Quote
Involved in a messy divorce, Bartha wrote the e-mail to his wife, Cordula, indicating his wish to commit suicide, officials told FOX News.

As part of the adjudictation of that divorce, Bartha, 66, was being made to sell the building, sources said.

Perhaps more orders will come in when you are closer to  shipping.

I'm kind of stuck out on a limb right now because of various things I've ordered...and then learned they were "pre-orders", one of them actually pushing the ship date back an entire month from the original announcement (that long-ago-announced Bernstein box that promised to start shipping next week, not to mention the Varese Club CDs that I presume won't be delayed too much longer).

I love buying terrific entertainment items, but I'm committed to some major items that haven't been charged to my card yet.  I just about need a computer tracking system for the things I'm awaiting.

Ginny, a few days ago you asked about Waterside Plaza. I don't know if anyone answered your question.

It's a residential complex on the East Side at around 23rd Street (the automobile entrance) and the East River. It's a complex of buildings which extend up to 30th Street and it even has a Web site

Next up was last night's season premiere of RENO 911! Not bad as this low budget show goes, but I'd say about half of it worked and half of it didn't. The WEST SIDE STORY audition was my favorite thing in this week's episode.

ENTOURAGE had an OK episode that was more plot advancing than laugh inducing. Always fun to see what the guys are up to (Paul Haggis crowing about his Oscars - "my boys" as he called them - didn't make me real thrilled), but the laugh lines were few and far between this week.

Ben, Jose, FJL, anybody else in NYC - I've been watching MSNBC's coverage of the explosion/fire on E. 62nd St.  Glad to see you all here on HHW.

My first reaction when I heard the news was "I hope it's not my building!"  I feel sorry for all the emergency folk who had to run in and secure the place.

Well, my dad is on a new chemo treatment, and so far, after this morning's round, he seems okay.  I'm hoping it doesn't make him sick.  He's now moved into the house where I'm staying, and he's in a good humor.

The discussion at the moment is "who's taking me to the airport tomorrow?"

I'm entering my pre-flight jitters, so keep those travel vibes coming!

Actress June Allyson, who starred with James Stewart and Van Johnson, has died, her daughter tells The Associated Press.

Allyson died Saturday at her home in Ojai, with her husband of nearly 30 years, David Ashrow, at her side, Powell said. She died of pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis after a long illness.

 Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,202868,00.html)

Quote
Actress June Allyson Dies at 88Monday , July 10, 2006

LOS ANGELES — June Allyson, the sunny, cracked-voiced "perfect wife" of James Stewart, Van Johnson and other movie heroes, has died, her daughter Pamela Allyson Powell said Monday. She was 88.

Allyson died Saturday at her home in Ojai, with her husband of nearly 30 years, David Ashrow, at her side, Powell said in a telephone interview.

She died of pulmonary respiratory failure and acute bronchitis after a long illness, Powell said.

During World War II, American GIs pinned up photos of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable, but June Allyson was the girl they wanted to come home to. Petite, blonde and alive with fresh-faced optimism, she seemed the ideal sweetheart and wife, supporting and unthreatening.

"I had the most wonderful last meeting with June at her house in Ojai. We had gotten lost in the car. She told me: 'I could wait for you forever.' We were such dear friends. I will miss her," lifelong friend Esther Williams said.

With typical wonderment, Allyson expressed surprise in a 1986 interview that she had ever become a movie star:

"I have big teeth. I lisp. My eyes disappear when I smile. My voice is funny. I don't sing like Judy Garland. I don't dance like Cyd Charisse. But women identify with me. And while men desire Cyd Charisse, they'd take me home to meet Mom."

Back from spending the afternoon with my friend Suellyn.  We saw A Prairie Home Companion at 1pm, then proceeded to eat at Izzy's (a deli).  They were closed due to smoke damage from a fire at the restaurant next door last week, so we went to Cornerstone Cafe instead.  They were closing in half an hour, so we had a quick sandwich & salad, then proceeded to Barnes & Noble for coffee and a long visit.

The PHC movie was not what I expected, but a lot of fun.  Who knew a sculpture of F. Scott Fitzgerald's head could be so funny?

And you will LOVE it!  The Doctor Who Confidential disc alone is worth it.  I've gone through all the video extras, with just Billie Piper's log the only real dud.  I've started going through the episodes, all with commentaries, but had to turn off the commentary on the first episode - the trio doing the commentary were all too giggley to be understood.

But we've got Deceit to watch before I get all Whovian again.

One complaint - there's nothing on the cover of Deceit to indicate a) running time, and b) content suitability for young audiences, a.k.a. minors.  I'm assuming miners would be adult enough for any content.
Title: Re:FULL STEAM AHEAD
Post by: bk on July 10, 2006, 05:23:39 PM
We had a few minors see Deceit and they seemed fine - there are a few intense moments, but nothing they haven't seen in motion pictures of the last ten years.

Title: Re:FULL STEAM AHEAD
Post by: bk on July 10, 2006, 05:39:11 PM
I would say PG-13 for sure, for a couple of language issues and one intense scene.
Title: Re:FULL STEAM AHEAD
Post by: S. Woody White on July 10, 2006, 05:50:10 PM
Thank-you.

This does raise an issue, of course, as to why a film with nudity (The First Nudie Musical comes to mind) must be rated R, while language and vilolence/intensity can still get a PG-13.  But that's got more to do with our society's issues, rather than the films themselves.

Catworld update....tonight I put Callie in my room and shut the door. Because there used to be carpet and now there are hardwood floors, it is easy for her to look under the door.  She glared as I played with Boo and Boo roamed at will.

I then put Boo in her room and played the same game with Callie....she loved it, but now remembered she was planning to give me a lecture and is walking around meowing at me.  LOL....I think she's starting to get that Boo is going to roam her territory freely.....it's just a matter of time.

She was trying to immitate Boo's jumps (very high and impressive) but she's been doing power stress eating, and just can't swing it....oh the pains of being 4 years old.

THE CLOSER had an unusual episode with the squad having to tiptoe around an investigation due to some bad decisions made by Flynn and Provenza. A little bit different for the show and a nice change of pace.

First time we've REALLY seen Brenda angry, and that scene was a lulu.

And then I watched the CSI: MIAMI rerun. It was a reairing of the fourth season premiere episode which I had only vague recollections of. More crime drama than mystery tonight, not my favorite kind of episode.

The Cartoon Network is playing episodes of PEE-WEE's PLAYHOUSE starting tonight. I did watch this show occasionally during its original run, but I'm pleased I'm going to be able to see all 40-something episodes of it now over the course of the next weeks. Campy fun with some famous guest stars and a cast of regulars (like Larry Fishburne, Phil Hartman, and S. Epatha Merkerson) who became famous later.

Glad to read Matt's thoughts and will look forward to his thoughts on the commentary track.

I got an early copy of the Amazing Stories DVD.  It will be interesting to see if any of these shows, most of which I thought were not very good, have aged well.

Matt's coming over shortly to pick up his DVDs.  Then I have to do the phoner with radio DJ Gregg Hunter.

I woke this morning to the news that the Free Advice Lawyer that has recently helped a young friend of mine, was shot Dead last night.  My friend lives only a few hundred yards from where the shooting took place. The lawyer had returned late to the office with his son to do some photocopying and disturbed an intruder.

Good Evening!

Nothing really more to report since earlier this evening.  I just ended up spending the evening in here with my roomies watching TV and gossiping.  A rather fun evening.  -So who else is watching "The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency"?  ;)

Well, I'm hoping/planning to get an early start tomorrow, so...

Goodnight.

My "Deceit" DVD arrived today!!  I got home and went to my sister's for a little bit and watched "Kyle XY," which I hadn't seen before.  I then went to my house and watched Kathy Griffin on Larry King.  I love her!  For the first time, she talked about her divorce from her husband Matt (which became final in May).

Now, I'm going to watch "Deceit"...actually, I'm going to take out my contact lenses, put on my glasses, THEN watch "Deceit."

I'll be back after it's over.  Later!

Oh....I watched DECEIT tonight when I got home from rehearsal.  Yes, I did, I watched it.

I must say that it looked grand....the music was terrific.  I loved the set, the lighting, and the costumes.

Watching DECEIT on dvd is the closest you can get to seeing it when it had its limited run at the El Portal in LA....only you get CLOSEUPS!!

If you got your DVD - watch it!

I enjoyed in VERY much.

I thought two of the three performances were OUTSTANDING, and I thought the third was not at the same level...irritatingly so.  BUT I am NOT a critic or theatre professional!

It didn't make me like the show less...I like the play a lot!

SO....tomorrow after rehearsal I will watch with the commentary!

BRAVO to Kritzerland on an unusual and fun DVD release!

I thoroughly enjoyed "Deceit."  I had no idea where it was all going.  I usually don't try to figure out what's going to happen...I just like to watch things like this and let the events unfold.  "The Sixth Sense" was another where I had absolutely no clew until it was revealed.

Great job, BK!  Keep 'em coming!! ;D

I don't know if I'll be able to watch it with the commentary tomorrow night.  It's my sister's boyfriend's birthday and we're all going out for dinner, then we'll go to my sister's and have a little party with the family.
