Title: BRUCE FORCE
Post by: bk on July 11, 2006, 12:09:39 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a certain Bruce Force, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're putting on some cologne right now - Brut, to be exact, so they will, in fact, have Brut Force.

Good morning all!

I also wish many, many, many vibes to DR Elmore, to his dad, his family and for a safe trip home.

I received my Deceit DVD yesterday!  Hooray!  But I have a problem with it.  You see, it's all nice and sealed and autographed and I'm not sure if I want to break the seal or keep it as is.

What to do?

I had to laugh at your captions for the Bear/Sheena photo, DR S Woody White.  :)

DR TomovOZ, comfort vibes to your friend.  You had it a little wrong, they didn't disturbe the murderer, the murderer WAS disturbed!

I don't think there would have been, DR FJL.  Walley played Gidget in the movies before THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW (I wish that series was on DVD!)

Oh, good point, Dan.  I wonder why "Deborah Walley as SUZIE" has stood out in my mind, though.  Maybe because she's the only one whose character didn't have the same first name as the actor (in the first season anyway).

Congrats to DR TCB on winning this week's UTC.  Also, congrats to CillaLiz for scoring on her first try at the contest.

I kept trying to find a way that made HENRY, SWEET HENRY fit as the flop musical.  Unfortunately, producer Norman Twain didn't seem to do anything of note before mounting B'way shows.  Grrrrrr...

LOL!  How the memory works!  I can still hear the theme music for the show, and how it transposed to a "rock 'n' roll" motif during the "Deborah Walley as SUZIE" credit.

Speaking of AMAZING STORIES, I also remember what a sheer disapointment that was.  I watched it up through the first four or five episodes before realizing that it was not going anywhere.  BK is right about the money that was thrown at this show--lots of it.  But the writing was terrible.  It was like watching THE GOONIES every week.

The only "introducing" card that I remember off the top of my head was for:

Denise Nickerson in the movier Zero to Sixty.

Which was really strange because she had already been acting for 13 years and was best know for her appearances in Dark Shadows (TV), the cult movie Smile, The Electric Company, Search For Tomorrow and best known as Violet in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

And oh yes she was also Lolita in the infamous bomb of a musical Lolita My Love.

It also turns out that Zero to Sixty was her last perfessional acting role.

Saw this movie in film school and star/producer the late Darren McGavin was there and I asked him why she was being introduced when she had already been acting. He told me that was what she wanted.

Strange very strange. Unless it was a joke on her behalf.  Instead of get introduced on her first film she got introduced in her last!

Good morning, all!  Yesterday was a strange day; I felt poorly all day and I was in bed by 8 PM.  I need to call my doctor in New York today and set up an appointment for tomorrow or Thursday.  I believe the infamous abscess of July 2004 has returned and I don't need more rounds of surgery!

I'm currently finishing up laundry and packing, and then I will help my brother and sister-in-law (and chef par excellenc) rearrange bedding situations to accommodate my dad's moving in.  He seems quite well today after the chemo, and it's a visting nurse appointment at 2:00 pm that will prohibit his riding to the airport with me.  KEEP THOSE TRAVEL VIBES COMING!

DR Tomovoz, thank you for the correction on Ozderek's last name.   I was hoping it would turn out to be our Derek, if only to have a record of him.

Dear Friend BK, I saw a lot of Orders! Orders! in your posts yesterday; I love you, but I don't particularly want a document of Kevin Spirtas' cabaret act.  I have nothing against Mr Spirtas, it's not something I want to add to my already cluttered apartment.

However, if there's no DECEIT DVD waiting for me tomorrow, I shall be most unhappy!

Thank you all for the vibes for my travel and my father!  Please keep 'em coming!

Where is Nursie Jane?

I can't think of any "Introducing..." credits at the mo'.  Did Audrey Hepburn have one for ROMAN HOLIDAY?  Didn't CITIZEN KANE have a card at the end saying "Introducing The Mercury Players"?

I'm not sure how long he was on the show. But i wouldn't necessarily expect the fans to go as crazy as they did for Matt's show dvd.  Matt has been on Days on and off for probably 20 years and is a huge soap star.

If so, I work at home, if not, I may as well head out to the office....I am REALLY hoping they do. Well, the AC man says he'll be here "after I get the unit loaded up" which doesn't say a whole lot. But he promised it would be installed today, so I will gladly wait around the house. I have a lot of writing to do for work, so I can do that here...actually, once I get started it's a lot easier to do it here - fewer unwanted distractions.

I'm in LA, waiting for a call from San Antonio. Bruce! I would love to hear the new song! I have written three 'count 'em - three drafts of that scene you asked for... not quite right. I think that's why it has stayed missing from the  novel and the three other versions of the play... I think I just have to commit to an Ending of that Romance.

Yes, you had much more luck. The jump start thing didn't and the compressor wouldn't start at all, even after cooling over night. The a/c is over 30 years old so it's also very inefficient....plus the a/c man "has a nice personality"  and likes to sing along to the country songs on his radio.   That makes me smile...he seems to enjoy his job and seems to know what he's doing.

Thanks, DR Matt H!  The only good thing is that if it is the same form of abscess in the other hip, this time he can't diagnose it.  I've already made the appointment for 3:30 on Thursday, and he will hopefully refer me right to the surgeon to lance it.

I just had a bowl of the most delicious potato soup my sister-in-law made last night, and tonight's dinner smells so good, I'm tempted to change flights to tomorrow.  Alas, it's not to be.

In about 20 minutes, I'm off to Dayton for the flight.  My youngest brother Randy is driving me.  I wanted my dad to come along, but he's got his home care nurse arriving after I leave.  It's been raining here, so I called US Air to confirm the flight was on.   It was the same sort of weather on my last visit, and we landed in NYC on time.

I hear security in NYC is tightening after the Indian railway bombings today, so I hope it's not to bad getting back to Manhattan.

My next post should be from home.

Or so SHE says!

Her ex-husband's widow says Esther had a tendancy to 'stretch' the truth now and then.  She would often come over in the afternoon saying she needed to fix dinner to take home for "the kids" and proceed to do a bit of cooking at their house and drink a LOT of their booze.  8)

In the movie SIMONE, about a computer-genereated figure called Simone, does anyone remember whether the credits actually said "introducing Simone as Herself?"

The IMDB reports:

Quote
In the original theatrical release, Simone was credited "as herself". In subsequent versions of the film, this was changed to "and introducing Rachel Roberts as Simone."

As for the Topic of the Day...

Hmm...  The only possible one that comes to mind is Salvatore Cascio who played Toto in "Cinema Paradiso" or "Nuevo Cinema Paradiso" in some circles.  However, I'm not sure if he was "introduced" in that film.  However, I do remember him being listed as "Salvatore Cascio as "Toto"" in the credits.  Guess I may have to pop the DVD in and take a look.

yes, DRMBARNUM....you are correct....Mr John Saxon was introduced in the final billing sequence as an "exciting new screen personality" in THE UNGUARDED MOMENT, and he did very well!

I remember Pat Crowley having a credit sort of like this at the end of "Forever Female."

I finished the last disc in the 4th season set of THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW. What a terrific batch of classic episodes. Among them

Ted campaigns for the Teddy Award and meets Walter Cronkite

Mary and RHoda have a serious falling out that makes them both miserable.

Ted insists on taking the same creative writing course as Mary and then steals her high school prom story.

Mary, Lou, and Murray investigate the singles scene for a live feed segment.

Lou and Rhoda have a date, and then another.

Mary writes a funny obituary that gets her suspended and she quits the newsroom.

And LOVESPRING INTERNATIONAL had a better episode than last week. Still not up to the first one I saw, but otherwise, it was OK. There were a couple of laughs.

I remember Bonnie Hunt's last series was mostly imrpovisation, and though there would be occasional laughs, it was never as funny as fully scripted half hour shows. I find LOVESPRING to be in the same boat. It might be much funnier if they had a writing staff and fully scripted the show. The characters have the potential to be really funny.

And the word of the day is: DIAPHORESIS!

Which is what happens when I jog.
Originally, the chararcter Hero in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was supposed to say "I PAID HORSES for their DIAPHORESIS," but someone decided the phrase "mare's sweat" was easier to understand.  No, really, it was either Shevlove or Gelbart who awoke one night, absolutely drenched, terrified that the part would be cast with an actor with an uncontrolable lisp.  Try it, say "I PAID HORSES for their DIAPHORESIS" with a lisp, you'll end up wetter than an otter's pocket.

Topic du Jour

Who will ever forget that magical moment during the opening credits of THE LAST VOYAGE when we saw the words, "And introducing Tammy Marihugh"

Actually, America had already fallen in love with little Tammy during her appearances on HOUSEPARTY with Art Linkletter.  HOUSEPARTY was also the first place I ever remember seeing a computer -- the giant UNIVAC that took up the whole stage and shot out a whole slew of punch cards to answer one simple question.

I wanted to post some pics from our trip.  It seems that we really only took photos when we were in southern california so I'll start with our tour.  We met up with our friend and tourguide Scott in front of Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.  We had intended to take his tour but since there wasn't anyone else booked he gave us a private tour in his jeep.  We started at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.  Rodzinski had chicken and waffles, and I had a chicken salad sandwich, fries and a side of gravy.  Awesome food.

Then we traveled around the city paying particular attention to places of significance from Sunset Boulevard and also visiting the spot where Mongomery Clift got in his car wreck.  Here is a picture of our buddy Scott.

I highly recommend that folks visit his site www.findadeath.com and/or take his tour if they are ever in LA.  He has an amazing amount of knowledge and so clearly loves what he does so he makes for the most enjoyable tourguide.  I can't say enough nice things about him.

As we were winding down our tour, Rodzinski asked about how to get over to the Paramount lot.  He offered to take us by, and then on the way called a friend who works there.  His friend got us passes so we were able to spend time wandering around the lot completely on our own.

The next day was Disneyland.  We jumped on the shuttle at 9AM and were through the gates by 9:15.  The highlight of the day was probably the fireworks display.  We happened to be through no planning on our part in the most amazing place to watch them.  We were waiting on line for the train in Fantasyland and looked back and forth between the castle in front of us and the fireworks behind us.  We had an awesome view of Tink and the pyrotechnics show and then boarded the train where we watched the remainder of the show- totally awesome.

I think it took us all of 10 minutes to fall asleep once we got back to our hotel.  It was a long day but absolutely worth it.

Another highlight of our day at Disney was the spectacular array of child tantrums.  I won't go into detail, but I will say that it set my biological clock back about 5 years.

It is a bittersweet day for Matt fans....

Many are loving his work on Deceit and they are thoroughly enjoying the play!!  I think Bruce picked the perfect actor for the part.

Matt was let go again at DOOL...  I do hope better things come his way...

Other highlights from our time in Northern California: eating Mexican food, In & Out Burger, and Fresh Choice; spending time with my mom and Rodzinski's family; experiencing the 4th of July parade in Morgan Hill, very small town feeling; getting along okay with my sister.

Random highlight: As we were heading back to my mom's house after a day of milling about, we decided to pop by my childhood home on a whim.  There was a for sale sign AND they were having an open house!!! I immediately pulled over and we went in.  There has only been one owner since we moved out about 9ish years ago so it was cool to see what they had done.  While I didn't appreciate their "decor" I did respect the amazing amount of work and money they had put into the house over the years - as evidenced by the crazy pricetag.  It was really nice to be able to walk around and put some old memories to rest.

And then today:

That is Killbot in Walty's cat carrier- I tried with no avail to get him into it on the Friday before we left for vacation so that I could take him into the vet.  He was not into it at all- and I have the scars to prove it.  I finally had to beg and plead and push him into Killbot's carrier which is a softer Sherpa carrier bag.  But I decided to his hard carrier out while we were gone so they could get better used to it.  Well apparently Killbot thinks it's her new hangout.

I found this photo of Barney Hughes.  I really loved him.  In 1990, I begged him to do the Toymaker in the Houston Grand Opera BABES IN TOYLAND but he couldn't get out of BLOSSOM to do it.  He was a wonderful actor.

Very sorry to read about Barnard Hughes. Always enjoyed him in everything I saw him do, but my favorite memory of him is holding poor shocked Carole Shelley's hand as she accepted her TOny for THE ELEPHANT MAN. She wouldn't let him go, and he was so gracious and loving to simply stand there holding her as she expressed her thanks.

A special man.

I began my evening of viewing just as I said I would: with the episode of THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW that featured June Allyson. Judy was very hoarse the night of the taping, so her vocals aren't great. June was petrified to be in front of an audience though she did a cute dance to "The Doodle Song." The outtakes on the disc were lots of fun. Steve Allen dropped by for Judy's "Tea for Two" segment (she was expecting Roddy MacDowell and was shocked to see him there), and they had some clever banter. There was some sloppy dress rehearsal footage and an impromptu song by Mel Torme after the show had finished taping celebrating his 38th birthday. I've never been a huge fan of Mel Torme, but in that off the cuff song, he didn't seem to be trying for that "Velvet Fog" sound and just sang full out, and it's the most appealing I've ever seen him as a performer.

Next came DECEIT with the commentary track turned on. Lots of insider information that was very interesting, enjoyable, and revealing, and thank goodness it wasn't a narration of what we were seeing on the screen. BK is much too knowing to put viewers through a waste of time like that.

SInce I had a little time left before the start of my only TV program over the air, I put in Season 7 of FRIENDS and watched the Christmas episode - "The One with the Holiday Armadillo." Hilarious from beginning to end.

RESCUE ME had another fun outing though I wanted more of some of the others and a little less of star Denis Leary's story. But, it IS his show, so I guess it's understandable he'd be in 80% of it. There are just so many interesting characters, and one feels cheated when some are almost totally overlooked any particular week.

Unless TOO MANY GIRLS comes tomorrow, I'm not expecting anything new DVD-wise in the mail, so I'll be going to the shelves for something to view.

I'd like to get to another Hercule Poirot mystery. There are two more left in the most recent boxed set (but I saw CARDS ON THE TABLE on A&E a few months ago), so that's one possibility.

I still have THE DETECTIVE waiting to be watched. THE GOOD EARTH came the other day, and I haven't seen it for awhile, but it's pretty long, and I'm not sure I'm in the mood for something longer than two hours.

I'm back from the (too, too filling) dinner for my sister's boyfriend's birthday.  A LOT of food and I ate it all...even the cake. ;D Larry (my sister's boyfriend) LOVED the picture of Patricia Bartlett that I got him.

Now, I'm home watching "Kathy Griffin:  My Life on the D List."  Right afterwards, I plan on watching "Deceit" again, this time with the commentary.  That should be fun. ;)

My thoughts and observations on DECEIT!!

I greatly enjoyed this well written thriller comedy and sat riveted through the entire thing. I thought I had it figured out as to what was going to happen only to have it completely surprise me by the ending. I tip my hat to you Bruce!! Excellently written and directed.

The acting and timing were excellent and I found parts of quite funny. All three of you did well. In Matt's character i saw shades of old-school Jack and Haver.  A hint of snark but edged with a hint of chaming deviousness.

All in all it was a thrilling fun ride! Thanks for the ride Bruce!!

BTW, Many of Matt's fans give the play thumbs up and they also greatly enjoyed the play and of course Matt!
