Well, you've read the notes, the clock was ticking as you read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just taking note of their favorite autographs so they can join in the discussion.

Cole Porter's on the playbill for Around the World In 80 Days.

And no I didn't ask him to sign it for me. I won it at an auction many years ago.

I've never seen a clock made of ticking.  I suppose that, instead of being wound too tight, it could be woven too tight.  But the only advantage I can think of is that, if it was an alarm clock, the ticking could cushion the blow when I hit the snooze button.

Good morning, all!  I needed to have my hair cut three weeks ago, but I went to Ohio.  This morning, I'm seeing my barber.  After that, I have a day in the recording office, unpacking my shipment of last Monday, doing some edits, and regaining my bearings.  After that, I see my doctor for a referral to a surgeon to lance and clean this abscess.  Then, I collapse.

My former intern and houseguest Dylan is becoming more scattered and, since I'm currently quite uncomfortable with this abscess, he's irritating me to no end.  Last night around 10 PM, he called from Tower Records to ask if I'd seen his checkbook (after earlier yesterday losing a bottle of pills and a stick of deodorant which he later found in his backpack).  I hadn't, so he said he would be in soon.  At 1:30 AM he walked in to announce he'd gone to a movie and lost his cell phone.  I wasn't in bed before 2, and my hair cut is at 9 AM, so I've had around 5 hours sleep last night, and I'm ready to kill.  He's out on Saturday, and I am now in countdown mode.

TOD:  many notes from Mr Sondheim, who's such a voluminous writer that the autographs will never be worth much although the contents of the notes are fascinating!
A signed drawing by Georg Gershwin
Many signed books by authors such as Robert Kimball, Ethan Mordden, Anderson Farrell, and others

I lost my two most prized autographs in the 1970s before I moved to New York:  letters from Benjamin Britten and Lotte Lenya.

TOD:

I don't collect autographs, but I have a few.  Geraldine Fitzgerald's on a copy of the BROADWAY, BROADWAY Playbill, Laurane Neuman, Garret Morris and Michael O'Donohugh's on the SNL comedy album, and a post card from Lily Tomlin.  I once had Marlo Thomas's on a copy of the FREE TO BE YOU AND ME book, but I gave that away.

Looks like the 2006 Festival of New Musicals at the Village Theater in the Seattle area (Issaquah, to be exact) will be from August 3-6, and the LAST STARFIGHTER presentation is currently scheduled for Friday, August 4 at 7:30 pm.

After we get back, we'd love to have the New York HHW contingent over for a simple foodfest here at our place.  Is Sunday afternoon, August 13th good for the NY folk?  If not, we can look at other dates.

I have quite a few autographs...I guess the one that means the most goes back to 6th grade.  We were supposed to get a penpal or write to someone.  I wrote to Lyndon Baines Johnson. Everyone laughed and said he wouldn't write back. I sent him a photo of me and my poodle Charlie.  I got a very nice personal letter back from him.

In 2001 I was in Austin, TX for a seminar. I went to the LBJ library and asked if they by any chance had my letter in the archives....they did!! They were kind enough to give me a copy to go with the letter he sent in reply.

They told me how he always liked school kids and would sometimes  go sit at the desk in the mock oval office in the Library/Museum when they were giving tours to surprise the kids.  They said he spent hours writing back to any kids who wrote to him...and I was one of those kids.  I received my letter from him in December 1972,  a month before he died.

The letter I wrote was quite funny, actually.  A part of it said "I bet you've never heard of Estherville, Iowa, but we've sure heard of you!"

I don't as a rule collect autographs, but I collect books and many of those are signed.

I'm staring right now in my office at a framed letter from H. Rider Haggard where he is declining an offer from a magazine publisher to write something for them because he has a couple of things already running in magazines...though not mentioned by name, one of those is his immortal "SHE", deduced from the dates and the magazine it is being serialized in.

Above that and above the prototype of Bowen's sword from DRAGONHEART is a framed picture of John Gielgud and his  inscribed working copy of The Old Code which I wrote and which he recorded as the ghost of King Arthur in the film.  It also has his little notations and acting notes on it.

I have a signed first edition of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the autograph apparently has been pasted in on the seam of the end paper and is from someone's old autograph book.  Also on this tipped-in page is the autograph of Michael Romanoff...I assume the famous Hollywood restauranteur.

I have couple of autographed Sabatini's, a Haggard, a Peter O' Toole  autobio; Heston's diaries personally inscribed to me as well as his autobio.  Edward Arnold's autobio.  Several autographed P.C. Wren novels (he wrote Beau Geste) and one with a letter on his stationary tipped in. A couple of signed Talbot Mundy's.  Several things inscribed by pals , Denny Miller, June Wilkinson, Harlan Ellison, and Mr. Bruce Kimmel.

Tons of signed books by various mystery and fantasy authors I collected.  A signed Spartacus novel by Howard Fast. A Scaramouche poster signed by Janet Leigh.

Good Morning!

I woke up about half an hour ago not sure if I had to move my car this morning...  I was pretty sure I was parked on the "right" side of the street, but then again...  So I jumped out of bed, and hurried outside... Ah... I was on the "right" side...  :)

However, now I'm up, but I suspect I shall be taking a nap sometime today... Or maybe just going back to bed in a few minutes.  ;)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I have a few notes from Mr. Stephen Sondheim too, but I've actually lost track of where they are.  I know I would not have thrown them away intentionally, but I'm afraid that they might have gotten mixed in with some "trash" during one of my moves.  However, since I do have about 20 boxes o' stuff in storage... One never knows.

Otherwise, I have some Playbills and concert programs signed by various people.  Strangely enough, whenever I'm working on a show, I tend not to collect autographs from my castmates.  Even on the last day of Lestat, when everyone else was running around trying to collect signatures (most likely for e-Bay too!), I just wanted Hugh Panaro to sign my souvenir program.  And that was that.

However, if a show I'm doing happens to be doing one of those BC/EFA fundraisers, and "selling" autographed posters, then I'll "buy" one of those to support the worthy cause rather than primarily to have the autographs.

Two programs that I have lost track of which I keep hoping to find someday: a program from the first National Symphony Concert I attended signed by pianist, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Andre Previn, and a Playbill of Biloxi Blues signed by almost everyone in the original Broadway cast except Matthew Broderick - I saw it in previews, a Wednesday matinee during my first high school trip up to NYC.

I have a few autographs... However my favorites are Matt Ashford's and The Chieftains. I met Paddy Moloney and Matt Malloy of the Chieftains when they were in concert in Minneapolis a few years ago. My knees were literally shaking when I met them. I have admired their music for a LONG, LONG time.

I have Matt's autograph on Deceit Preview flyer and STephanie got that for me and now the DVD... I have yet to meet him but perhaps someday. I have heard from those who have met him that is a classy gentleman and a very nice person.

I guess Mr. Sondheim does/did write a lot of letters.  I have a couple of those as well, responses to my invitations to him to see my work, that he can't make it but with nice, polite (and in one case quite witty) and throughly reasonable excuses.  But the last one is from over ten years ago.  Who writes letters these days, after all?

My favorite, most treasured letter is from Joe Masteroff, who gave me a very helpful, reasonably detailed (although generally complimentary) explanation of where I had gone wrong on a particular project.

through a good portion of the 1990s my good buddy Ron and I both collected autographs...many of them were obtained in person at the Ray Court's shows in North Hollywood, but the majority we got by writing to various and sundry celebs and semi-celebs, sending them photos to sign and return in a self-addressed, stamped envelope we supplied....Ron tended to go for the more well known classic stars as well as more current up and coming TV hunks...he had a pretty good track record of returns, some were pre-prints but many appear to be authentic!

I (surprise, surprise) went for the lesser known B movie and TV stars of years past...and a few up and coming TV hunks (they were always so willing!).

One of my favorite autographs is from Penny Singleton who also wrote me a very nice 4 page letter....if I remember, tonight I will scan a few of my favorite autographed photos for your viewing pleasure.

I did attempt to get autographs from all the major players in MELROSE PLACE....only Doug Savant responed with a real autograph...all of the others sent pre-prints, if they sent anything at all.

Autographs... I think my most memorable experience was on my second trip to NYC when I saw Chicago which was starring at that time Bebe Neuwirth and Karen Ziemba.  I loved the show and waited at the stage door for autographs.  I got everyone but Bebe's because she exited out another door. :(  Michael Beresse (sp?) was the understudy for Billy Flynn and had gone on that night.  When I got his autograph he made a little joke about "who's this guy?" but I thought he was great and was pleased when he went on to star in Kiss Me Kate.

I also enjoyed getting Martin Short's autograph at Encore's Promises Promises, he was patient and took a photo with my friend and I.  Said friend later went on to work in a Broadway PR office and worked directly with Mr. Short on Little Me.

DR JRand, did you say the wrong name last night in mentioning that Bernard Slade had died? Didn't you mean Barnard Hughes? I hadn't read anything about the death of Bernard Slade.

Reading Barnard Hughes' obit in today's paper, I knew he had won a Tony, of course, but I had forgotten that he had won an Emmy for a guest appearance on LOU GRANT. Good for him! He never got enough credit as a superb character actor.

Re GRAND PRIX. I remember as a kid thinking it was too long, but seeing the movie in a CInerama theater was stupendous.

I haven't bought the DVD yet. I saw that TCM was showing it this weekend at some point, and I've set my DVR to record it. After watching it again as an adult (have never seen it in all the years since seeing it in the 60s as a teenager completely uninterested in racing), I'll decide if I want to shell out $$$ on the DVD.

As for autographs, I have a very eclectic collection. From my youth I have folks like PAtty Duke, Brenda Lee, Bill Bixby, the Smothers Brothers. (Brenda Lee came through here in a tour of THE WIZARD OF OZ, and I went backstage to meet her. The others I got from publicists during their TV star days.)

Later on, I've gotten Ann Miller, Debbie Reynolds, Tony Randall, Christopher Meloni (several times), the original cast members of A CHORUS LINE who wrote the book ON THE LINE (a signing at the Drama Book Shop), Terrence McNally, and, most recently, Bruce Kimmel and Matthew Ashford.

I took a Hercule Poirot movie off the shelf - MURDER ON THE LINKS - which I've seen but have no recollection of as to the murderer. I may go with it this afternoon and early evening.

TOD - The very first show I saw in NYC was Cabaret at the Imperial Theatre in June, 1967.  My souvenier program book is autographed by 4 of the 5 original cast members (all but Jill Haworth).  I took the same program to Cincinnati's Music Hall when Joel Grey toured there in a revival about 20 years later and he signed it again.  He was between the matinee and an evening performance and still had his MC makeup on.

Also, a program from a 1977 Middletown Symphony concert in which the featured performer was Cy Coleman.  He was so gracious afterward - signed my program and wrote down a phone number for me to call in case I had trouble getting tickets for his then-new show I Love My Wife the next week in NYC.

Rodzinski, in tomorrow's notes I will tell you what name is really being said every time Jonathan Winters says "Will" or "Blessed Reverand".  I will also mention some dialogue from the shooting script that didn't make the film, although if you watch the characters in the background of the scene in which the dialogue was supposed to occur, you'll suddenly see some "attitude" you've never noticed.

There were several overtly and hilarious gay scenes - this is the final shooting script I have (an original, which I got along with a first draft "outline" script) so there's a good chance these were shot.  Too bad none of that footage is on the DVD - since it was an MGM film now owned by Warners, who knows if it even exists, but who knows if the exalted "leaders" of Warners even looked for it or knew of its existence?  The gay scenes would have been mind-boggling for that era - one in a gay bar made me laugh out loud (occurs when Dennis Barlow is doing odd jobs - he's working as a server in a gay bar - in drag).

The Grand Prix disc has an interesting retrospective doc - not as poor as those things usually are on the Warners discs - has some really interesting backstage footage of the shoot, too.  James Garner takes part and tells this really interesting story of some store owner holding up the shoot because he wanted more money and how Garner berated him about it.  Then we SEE and HEAR the incident because someone shot it - that's the kind of stuff I like.

I do, however, collect autographs/signatures.

I have a nice assortment, IIDSSM (If I Do Say So Myself in internet lingo), of theater 'graphs (Sondheim, Styne, Merrill, Comden & Green, B. Cook, B. Harris, etc., etc.) movie composers (Alfred Newman, Hugo Friedhofer, Miklos Rozsa, Jerome Moross, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, etc.), lots of actors, some directors.

I'm not one to wait at the stage door for autographs after a show especially if it "stars" someone.  It was fun to wait for Cathy Rigby with my 5 year old niece after Peter Pan and I've waited for a few others.  But our recent coup was snagging all 5 autographs from the prodcution of Some Girl(s) in NYC. Imagine the likes of Eric McCormack and Fran Drescher coming out of the stage door of a theare in the Village.  It was scary.  Fran didn't sign much, but she did get our program.  It was just fun trying to nab these people as there were two possible doors they could exit the theatre.  It was the most crazy experience at a stage door that we've ever experienced.

I'm having the hardest time attaching a photo, someday I'll figure it out.

Not precisely true - he "collected" an autograph of Dick Van Dyke (on a paper napkin) when he was filming on the Queen Mary and gave it to me!

We both gathered signatures on items when we hosted stars at Long Beach's ICT - they include: Susan Egan, Maureen McGovern, Nell Carter, and Shelley Berman.

Very interesting info, BK. Bought my copy of THE LOVED ONE yesterday. Wish there were more extras, but of course Tony Richardson was long gone before anyone thought of these commentary tracks. Would've been nice to hear Morse or Winters had to say. Or Haskell Wexler.

They did leave in that one odd scene where the coffins are filled with ladies, and Liberace pops out of one expectantly.

Police Dog Blamed for Putting Truck in Gear, Running Over Woman

Thursday , July 13, 2006

OGDEN, Utah — A police dog that was left in a pickup truck with the engine running apparently knocked the vehicle into gear and ran down a woman who was walking to her mailbox.

Mary F. Stone, 41, was expected to remain hospitalized with a fractured pelvis and tailbone until at least Friday, said her husband, Paul Stone.

The dog, a German shepherd named Ranger, had been left in the truck while its handler responded to a domestic disturbance call Tuesday, police Lt. Loring Draper said. The truck's engine was on so Ranger would have air conditioning.

Draper said Ranger must have hit the shift on the steering column, putting the automatic transmission into gear. As the truck slowly rolled forward, police officers yelled to Stone, but she couldn't get out of the way in time, he said.

A front and rear tire ran over her. "She had tire marks on her clothes," her husband said.
The truck then went through the Stones' yard and struck a vehicle in the driveway.

Off to opening night....must stop at a couple of shops to try to find a replacement for a BROKEN prop.

Yes, as I director I made someone cry last night by telling them that they are killing a scene.....not the first time for that note.  About two times out of five she makes it work.....and I keep thinking THOSE times are not the accidents.

Plan B will be in effect tonight....if she blubbers and hesitates too long....the policeman is coming in the shoot her.....  The policeman in the play, that is.

There's a brief retrospective doc on The Loved One.  One line changed from the script (probably due to casting) was:

Schwarzenegger Calls for Banning Hand-Held Cellphone Use While Driving

Schwarzenegger signals support for long-stalled legislation banning drivers' use of hand-held cellphones. The practice is 'inexcusable,' he says.
By Jordan Rau, Times Staff Writer

July 13, 2006

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday condemned one of the most prototypical Los Angeles driving practices — grasping a steering wheel with one hand and a cellphone with the other — and gave a strong boost to legislative efforts to outlaw hand-held mobile phones throughout California.

Note to Editor: "outlaw hand-held mobile phones" - unconditionally? I think not.

Quote
(Schwarzenegger told his daughter " I have had many, many conversations with her that if I ever catch her making a phone call while she is driving — and I sometimes follow her to make sure that she doesn't make that mistake — [that] I will take the car away from her and she can drive the bus because it's inexcusable."

Great - punish the kid by making her drive the inexcusable bus!

DakotaCelt  - what do you thnk about Days these days?  Who do you think the gloved hand is?  Like I mentioned before, I'm tired of the Mimi/Shaun/Belle/Phillip thing and I wish Sami's secret would finally come out.  I miss Marlena. (I've been watching since 1984 on and off) I know she's gone for the summer and will be back.  I was so happy to see Kayla again (and where this crush I have on her came from, I do not know!) and I hope things start moving along with Steve and his amnesia!   Just my two cents. :)

I did see MELINDA AND MELINDA. Interesting experiment as many of Woody's films are. I found myself enjoying the "comedy" Melinda story much, much more than the dreary characters in the "tragedy" Melinda story. Found the actors in the comedy version much more to my liking, too.

Neither story had much weight to it, however, and as frequently with Woody, he didn't really know how to end either story.

Still, glad I saw it. It was still worlds better than CELEBRITY or CURSE OF THE JADE SCORPION.

I'm thinking about it... Especially since it's back in the Nikos - which means there is air conditioning this year!  The old church is a nice space, but not exactly the most comfortable place to be in when the temps and the humidity are running high.

Good Evening!

Well, I believe I'm over the "shock" of the phone call I received earlier today.  Here's a quasi-transcript:

Quote

"Hello, Jose?"

-Yes.

"Would you be interested in coming in for Sweeney Todd?"

-Sure...

"Well, we're starting to look for someone to replace Alexander Gemignani as the Beadle, and since he plays most of the piano part throughout the show, we're looking for good pianists."

-Oh...

"Are you interested?"

-Hmm...  <laughs to myself - and sort of out loud> -I thought you wanted me to come in to play some auditions... well..  Yes!

[/size]

So...  After my production meeting tomorrow morning, I will be heading in to sing and play for the casting director who I've known for a couple of years.  And as it turns out, I also know the current Musical Supervisor.  If anything, it will be nice to see some friends again.

I'm still sort of giddy about it.  I have no idea what my chances are, but I also have absolutely nothing to lose.  The casting director knows she's taking a chance on me, and she also know that I really haven't been out of the pit in a long time.  So...  I got the sides and the music - and the music is in a lower key than the original, which is fine with me! - and I think I'm ready to head in tomorrow.  It should all be a very casual (ad)venture, and I'm just going to treat it like that.  And if I end up getting a call-back, well...  Stranger things have happened.

Fun! Fun! Fun!

Me, TOO!

Malan's accent is too chi-chi to be real, IMO.

Plus, they aired a show two nights ago in which they interviewed all the applicants.  Malan had applied for each "Project Runway" thus far, and they aired a clip from each interview segment.  In one of them, he had NO accent.  It's very funny...just hope they share some of his unguarded moments and I also hope someone calls him on it.

The previews make it seem all hell's going to break loose next week among the "designers".

Well, that would certainly make it tempting, but I would still have to sit through MOTHER COURAGE.

I'm in the same camp with you, DR TCB.  I'm all for "great theater", but I'm just not sure I want to wait in the summer heat for a couple of hours to get the tickets, then sit outside on a hot, humid summer night watching Brecht.  Ehh...  Although, since Jeanine Tesori is writing some music for the production, maybe there will be a little song and dance number in the midst of all that Brecht-spiel.

*However, I do think that it was quite a courageous bit of programming to devote their summer season in Central Park to the subject of "War" - as all the posters in the subways keep telling me.  But again, I'm not sure I'm in the mood for such heavy-fare in the Park.  At least now.

**And I'm also pretty sure that had they not been able to secure the talents of Liev Schrieber, Jennifer Ehle (for Macbeth), and Meryl Streep and Christopher WalkenKevin Kline, they probably would not have proceeded with such "heavy" programming.

Jose!  How exciting.  I didn't even kow you were allowed out of the pit.
 Break a leg

I saw my doctor at 3:30 and left around 4:00 with a referral to the surgeon who did the initial repair surgery in Oct. 2004, a couple of prescriptions, and a date next Thursday for some lab work.  By 5:00, I had set up an appointment for Monday morning at 10:15 to see the surgeon about lancing and cleaning this abscess.  I'm really happy right now because I discovered in my medicine cabinet some Tylenol with codiene, and I need drugs to kill the itch and the pain!

On that pleasant thought, I'll sign off.  Good night, all!

I thought this particular one was great.

Possible spoiler:

William Hurt gave a great performance - and I realized at the end that he had gone the entire program without uttering a single word.  Amazing.

Hmmm...  Without seeing this show and not having read the story it's based on, I would have to say that it sounds similar to the TWILIGHT ZONE episode with Agnus Moorehead battling little space invaders.

Watched four different things tonight.

I began with Shirley Temple's HEIDI.

I resisted buying this again when it came out last year in that boxed set, but getting a good price on this DVD persuaded me to bite the bullet and do it. I'm glad I did because the video quality is much, much better: better contrast and sharper despite some speckles and scratches.

Always enjoy this film, among my very favorite Temple movies.

I'm assuming that the GREY'S ANATOMY episodes being shown on Thursdays are from season 1 pretty much in order since this episode had to do with Izzy and George moving in and making themselves at home in Grey's house. (They were told they could move in at the end of last week's second episode.)

I know the Sunday rerun episodes come from this season since we had a Thanksgiving episode last Sunday.

Anyway, tonight's show had a male patient flirting with George, and some beautiful writing concerning organ harvesting.

While I was watching GREY'S ANATOMY, I had the DVR recording CSI which I watched at 10 p.m. Lots of fairly famous folks in this week's episode: Judd Nelson, John Michael Higgins, Kenneth Johnson. I had seen the episode, but I didn't remember the solution of the crime.

There were also several looks passed back and forth between Grisson and Sarah which made the season finale not so much of a jaw-dropper any more. I had forgotten all this stuff had happened.

Back to the TOD: The following is a sampling of the 4 notebooks full of autographed photos I have obtained either personally or through the mail...

First off is a man that many of you will recall from westerns in the 1950s...that luciously handsome Mr. Guy Madison!!

He signed this photo as well as one of him in his Wild Bill Hickcock gear.

Another TV icon, Mr. Raymond Burr...I wrote to him and he signed this photo for me about a year or two before he passed away.

Looking through my autographs it is very sad to notice that about half of those I got autgraphs from back in the 1990s are now gone  :'(

Once TPunk and I were at a mall in NJ and she was shopping, and I got a bit bored and saw that some soap actress was getting ready to sign autographs, so I got in line. She was from a CBS soap, so I didn't know who she was, but she was very friendly and even signed at my request; "To Tom, You're the Greatest!" which amuses me because I am easily amused I guess. Michelle Stafford says I am the greatest!

I am not sure what happened with his...he wasn't well at that time so his hand might have been a bit shaky...interestingly enough, that did happen with an autographed photo I sent to Peggy Webber...her pen wouldn't write and so she kept tracing over her signature with another pen...and wrote me a long letter apoligizing for messing up the photo, and even letting me know that she went all over the place trying to find a replacement photo at Los Angeles memorabilia stores..what a sweet lady!
