We had our brush up rehearsal tonight, and hopefully the show will go well in its last four days of existence.  We have some nice crowds and I sold about 30 tickets between 5 pm and 6 pm.

Of course we probably would have done the same thing yesterday, if the box office person had decided to show up.  When I called to reserve some tickets....NO ANSWER....NO ANSWER....NO ANSWER....  So I sent an email telling EVERYONE on the board who messed up!

Of course this morning I get an email telling me about car trouble, etc, and did I want to see a note from the mechanic....and that she stayed an extra hour and sold a total of six tickets.

Well....sure....we do more business from 5 to 6 - the first posted hour we are open than the second hour...or ANY hour we are NOT advertised as being open.  Dumb ass!

But then - some things seem important, but they are really not.

DRLAURA and DR DAKOTA CELT have made us aware of that.

And on Monday, my friend Ernie (he was Oscar when I was Felix) suffered a stroke and is in the hospital.  And last night they discovered his sister Jan (one of the Pigeon sisters) dead of a heart attack in her house....

Distressing for many people....but the show must go on.

And my sister is moving on Tuesday to Seattle to be with a man she met on the internet who has a LONG criminal history including time spent in Federal Prison for a crime I shall not mention.

No amount of common sense talk or persuasion can change her mind.

So I am a bit distressed - although I try not to air my very personal activities here....those are some of the reasons I have been away now and then.

I am a willow, I can bend.

I spent the better part of the last week in a numb state however last night I was angry and I mean angry due to prognosis.  I did the next best thing

I took out my dart board, plastered a picture of Ken Corday on it and proceeded to throw darts at it.... After that I pinned a picture of Saddam Hussein and threw more darts....  I then hung up several more pics of people I dispise....

Oddly, it was a release...

Interesting title....

Perhaps that is the beauty of life is the different facets it presents. When one looks at a gem you never know what you will see as the light glimmers and refracts in different directions. One never knows what they will see. Perhaps that is one reason I find celtic knots incredibly intriguing. The twist and twine until the come to a meeting point and then the spiral off again in a different direction until they the strands come to a new crossroads. Perhaps that crossroad is another facet of the spirit we so choose to find and explore.

Thank you Bruce and all.
It's been a difficult day for Derek's family and friends.

"TassieTed" who lives with Derek's sister Maureen, arrived today to stay a few days with Derek's own Ted.

They have been having "cake" in honour of Derek.
It is course a "bee sting" cake as is appropriate for Bears.

Good morning, all!  Today I will venture forth to Fourteenth Street.  Last night's theatre jaunt with the jovial (and disgustingly positive) DR Jose was a good trial run for being out of the apartment for 4 hours was a good trial run.  The incision still bleeds, but I'm hoping it's carrying away all infection causing the abscess for good, this time.

!!!!!!!!!!!A POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY WISH TO DR OZDEREK WHO IS MISSED GREATLY!!!!!!!!

DR JRand55, I've never understood the mentality of any of those women marrying prisoners involved in horrific crimes, so I have no remote suggestion of advice to you concerning your sister's irrational decision.  Kiss her goodbye, wish her well, and never tell her "I told you so" when it ends badly.

Oh, God, I'm turning into Dear Abby.

I don't mean to make light of the situation, but it was the first thing that popped into my head.   I see a lot of women hang on for people who have done some pretty nasty stuff.  Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't.  I wish you and your sister the best.

My best advice is keep the lines of communication open with her so she always knows she has a place to go if things get ugly

Still haven't heard from Boo's prospective new family.  I really do hope they want her. It's sad for me, but this situation really isn't fair to Callie who is going bonkers and Boo who is stuck in the guest room.  And there is a nice young girl who wants a cat and a loving home for Boo to take over.  I think she'll like that.

If they say yes, it will be with the condition that if for any reason they decide they don't want to keep her they will call me and I'll pick her up.  Our shelter is not a no-kill shelter and they have had too many cats this summer.  That's not going to happen to Boo.

DR Ron Pulliam, did you watch EUREKA last night, and if so, what did you think? My DVR picked it up last night, and I should have plenty of time to watch it at some point today since there's nothing on TV tonight that I'm interested in.

Most of the reviews I've read liked the pilot very much but some have expressed uncertainty that the writers will be able to sustain the show over the course of a long-running series.

I'm another who has always liked MOMMIE DEAREST and thought it an underrated film. Faye is spot-on as Joan Crawford, at least the Joan contained in the pages of Christina's book. And like VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, it was approached as a serious drama by audiences when it was released. There was no laughter in the theater during Joan's various tirades during the movie. At least, not at the theater where I saw the film.

And on a related note...

DR JRand - Since you seem to keep abreast of things astrological and otherwise... Has the past couple of weeks been a particular difficult time for Virgos?  -And any other "signs"?  I, too, have been dealing with a couple of issues over the past couple of weeks - professional, personal, etc.  It just seemed like it was one of those periods where little "annoyances" just kept coming one after the other.  And, consequently, one "annoyance" would start affecting another "annnoyance", and so on and so forth.  Thankfully, I seem to be coming out of this rough patch, but I've had more than my share of "thinking moments" over the past couple of weeks than I would have liked.

Was it all in the stars?

OH!

Catching up from yesterday's Topic of the Day-

Jeremy Irons and Anthony Edwards (and basically the rest of the cast of hundreds) in "Brideshead Revisited"

I got soooo hooked on "BR" when I was in high school.  I caught it about half-way through it's original airing, then proceeded to watch the marathons that WETA would show every now and then.  Then a couple of years ago, they started rebroadcasting the episodes again in their final late-night slot before signing off.  And it's one of those DVD sets that keep tempting me as I walk by them at the store.

DR DakotCelt - Was the TV movie you mentioned yesterday starring teen actors from various sitcoms called, "Senior Trip"?

Well... I just looked it up on the IMDB, and the only real "star" in it at the time (1981) was Scott Baio.  However, I do remember Jason Alexander and our very own Liz Callaway getting to "audition" for Mickey Rooney in the final sequence.  Oohh.. And the hunky Vincent Spano too.

A couple of years ago, I did happen to catch in on late-night TV, but I've always hoped to find it on VHS or DVD.

And there were all these great shots of New York City as one of the teenage couples in the film tries to see everything there is to see in their short time in NYC.  -All accompanied by the strains of "Rhapsody in Blue".

And speaking of Liz Callaway...

I also keep hoping to find tapes from the "In Performance at the White House" series that PBS used to produce.  I remember Liz being featured on an "up and coming Broadway stars" program - I believe Jim Walton was in it too, maybe even Debbie Shapiro too - ???  In any case... She sang "Another Hundred People" - in a blue dress, I believe... WOW!

BK - Any chance you get your hands on those tapes?  ;)

When I brought up Playbill.com there was a pop-up ad with Martin Short that, well, popped up.  However, it was Martin Short "himself" as the pop-up ad, addressing audience as he plugged his upcoming Broadway show.  Hmm...

BK - Maybe you could contact "In Person" technologies - I believe that was the name I spied on the ad - and have daily personal pop-ups here on HHW.  OHH!!  Then you could truly bitch-slap everyone "in person"!

We've done this as a topic way back when - Benjamin would have to be a newcomer.  Minnie and Ernie are very hard to cast.  I can't remember all of the suggestions, but Meryl Streep was there, as was Barbra Streisand - in days of yore, I would have suggested Judy Holliday.  In days of yore, Howard da Silva as Ernie would have been just right.

For OZDEREK and my parents and assorted other Dearly Departeds... whatever was best and most fulfilling in life, I hope that's hereafter. Although - as i was waking up a few mornings ago, I had a distinct impression of my mother stomping down the hallway muttering, "You people..." in disgust. She was, however, accompanied by a dog... wherever there's a dawg, life be jes' fine.

Speaking of which - oh, I hope that little girl loves BOO! Get that little rascal away from Callie's home environment, and into his own happy home!

Okay, so I've been avoiding the horror of the day - which is JRAND's sister's weird affinity for her internet scumbag. OY!! My guess is that the fantasy is so much more intriguing and exhilarating than the actuality will prove to be. Ladies of a certain age.... well, you know. Not for nothing they call it Mental Pause... Anyway, when she wakes up, my guess is she'll suddenly have a Family Emergency she just HAS to deal with, gotta run, be right back, honey, I swear... and SKIDADDLE! Support her current choice, even if it is not a choice you would not make, and keep the door WIDE open and a light in the window!!

Ask BK DAY

We often hear that a DVD was taken from this source or that source.

What exactly is an interpostivite print?
Is there anything they can do to it to improve the quality of it?

Also mentioned is a camera negative. Are there different kinds of negative sources?

The camera negative is obviously the negative of the film edited into the cut of the film.  An interneg is a negative made off the camera neg and is used for making prints.  It is a generation away from the original, and therefore contains more grain than the original, especially any effects or optical shots, which can now be many generations away.  An interpositive is an actual print.  And prints are the final step and again are many generations away from the original.  Things can definitely be done to help each of those sources - it's suprising how often things aren't done, though.  There is NO excuse for bad color because they can fix just about anything.  But the person doing the fixing has to know what the color was like in the days of the film they're transferring. The latest example of this is the new The Searchers DVD - very sharp, better than the first DVD in that regard, but with completely off color - I bellyached so loud and so long about this and was berated by everyone for doing so, until, that is, Mr. Robert Harris agreed with me and confirmed that someone had dropped the ball and that it was being redone for the HD release.

Wow, Bruce, you make Rockabye Hamlet sound much better than I've heard it was. It's one of those shows people mention when they talk about big, bad flops. The two numbers you have on the Shakespeare album, especially The Last Blues, are both great fun!

The Last Blues is one of my favorite tracks that I've recorded - not a great song, but the drummer was cooking, Melba was cooking, and the whole thing is magic, which happens from time to time and usually completely out of the blue.

Yo, Bruce! Chuck is printing out the script for me today. I gotta run by and get it - yeah, "run by"... which means sitting on the freeway for as much as two hours... I don't think I'll be able to then sit on the freeway for the requisite two hours more to get it to you today, before the festivities begin at the cemetary...

So, here's my plan: Felice is coming with me to Heather's show on Friday. I'll bring it to you then. Can't wait to heave you see it with the lyrics and new, improved scenes!!! Hahahahahahaaaaaa! and I found us an "older" actor who does dialects and sings, for the Father/English Playwright/French guy parts! PS - he's willing to do the next reading.

Yep, no work today because the office is a heatbox. Kinda slow there anyway this month.

NANNY McPHEE was a decent movie. Predictable, and yet well cast and fun to watch. The kind of movie I feel should've done better at the box office, but the marketing was a little unclear.

I kind of like the casting of Steve Forrest because he's just such an odd choice. I mean, what a part for that guy to get at that point in his career. Was there no A-list male actor willing to be in the movie or what?

I was a BR addict too!! I watched the whole thing the first time it was broadcast. I couldn't decide whether I was in love with Jeremy Irons or Anthony Edwards. A little of both I think

Sorry to read about Boo, Cillaliz.

In an odd way, I suppose, Callie has "won."  She has convinced you she won't tolerate another animal in her house and won't share you.

I will reiterate it took my cats three months to stop acting out and behave properly...something they were doing when I wasn't there, and they made the mistake of behaving properly in front of a person who was watching them for me when I was out of town.

I do understand about bad feline behaviour, though.  When they don't like something they go to extraordinary...and nasty...lengths to express themselves.

You have my sympathies for having to find Boo a new home.

DR MattH:  About "Eureka"...I was entertained, although not blown away.  There are many intriguing aspects to this show that may play out into something extraordinary.  The leading actor, Colin Ferguson, is perfect.

BUT...I have major reservations about any show that features Matt Frewer.  This actor grates on my nervous system like fingernails on a chalkboard.

His voice has an unusual, and very annoying, nasal quality that, coupled with his "fried brain" appearance, truly puts me off.

Add to that his ridiculous, and awful, "Australian accent" for this character and you might well imagine I was ready to chew nails every time he turned up....which, BLISSFULLY, wasn't too often in the 2-hour premiere.

Very little of Frewer goes way overboard in my book

And on Monday, my friend Ernie (he was Oscar when I was Felix) suffered a stroke and is in the hospital.  And last night they discovered his sister Jan (one of the Pigeon sisters) dead of a heart attack in her house....

Distressing for many people....but the show must go on.

Cillaliz-
I am always leery of these types of agencies, having worked for what turned out to be a fraudulent literary agent once, and seeing it from the inside. If she is being charged money as part of the contract, the legitimacy is in question.

I found this discussion on a msg. board, which may not be the same agency, but the person does bring up a good point. Make sure she can ask questions and inquire about the details of the services provided. Some of these places set up deals where they accept anyone, take their money, let them tape all the auditions they want, and either don't do anything with the tapes or submit en masse to indifferent casting people.

Thanks. Yes, Callie has won.  On the other hand, so has Boo. I'm still waiting to hear, but if this works out, she came to me, I saved her and nursed her back to health, gave her love and found her a good home with a little girl who really wants a cat.  And if it doesn't work out, I will make them promise to call me and I'll pick her up.

I realize that I could force this thing on for as long as it takes, but I just don't want to do that to the cats or to me.  (Or to those DRs who must be very sick of reading about my cats!)

No, they don't work that way. Of the 100 or so who auditioned in Des Moines, they took 4. One of them was my niece. They get a percentage of what you make wherever they place you.   They send you the audition info, the scripts etc and you make the video and submit it.

My brother said he checked it all out and it is legit. But, being leary of this sort of thing myself, I wondered if anyone here has heard of them. So far she's gotten a script for some lesbian horror flick - she said no to that  and  as a girl either accused of murder or taking the murder rap for someone else (I didn't get the details) on an episode of BONES.

The DVD was Rudolph Valentino in BLOOD AND SAND. There probably isn't a frame on this 84 year old film that doesn't have dirt, scratches, and damage, but Kino has done as good a job as possible with sharpness (very sharp), contrast, and tinting. I can certainly understand why people switch want to switch to a Four-Ten week.  The break in the middle is terrific.

Cilliliz, do you think that if you just let the two out loose around each other all the time they will eventually just get used to each other? I am not sure what Callie is doing exactly...is spraying involved? That might be a rather difficult thing to overcome....but if they just hiss at each other and maybe claw at each other, I would imagine that they would stop at some point.

With dog Bosco and Freddy I just left them to roam free in the house 24/7 and after some weeks Freddy finally stopped hissing at the dog...now he follows Bosco around like a little pal.

Mike, here is a website about the Bombay Dreams tour.  I don't see anything about Portland listed, so you may have to journey north.

My friend's boyfriend is in this tour.  I think Seattle is the closest it will get to you.

That is not fair. There are Indians Portland and gay men in Salem who might want to see this show.

\

It isn't just the simple hissing behavior. I've been through that with other cats in the past and that's no big deal.  This is much different.  Callie literally stalks her down and pounces as if she's prey, and it isn't a game. I've never seen anything like it. She isn't spraying - she's just leaving her calling card in the middle of the hallway that leads to her litterbox. Right where I can step in it, I may add.

I had to take Boo to the vet tonight for her last round of shots. They weren't surprised with the problems I'm having and said this isn't uncommon with calicos. One vet suggested keeping them totally separated for a month, when I said it's been a month he said "or two".  They didn't think I would have much luck in the long run.  So, one of the vets said she may know of a wonderful cat lover who's cat has very serious cancer. She doesn't know if she'll be looking for another cat, but thought of me right away and will call if she knows anyone who would meet my approval.

I have my former neighbor asking around her friends (mostly seniors).  So, if it isn't a young girl, it may be a senior living alone.  I am not going to take her to the shelter. They recently had a sign on the door saying they had too many cats and any cats dropped off would be euthenized. (or however you spell it). I refuse to take that chance.  I'll keep her until I find a home.

Yes, I believe that was the name. I do recall watching it.

My own guess for the movie DakotaCelt was talking about is HIGH SCHOOL USA which was all the NBC sitcom stars of 1983 (Nancy McKeon, Michael J. Fox, Todd Bridges, Dana Plato) in a movie where the principal was Dwayne Hickman.

I remember Michael J. Fox... I used to have a typical teen crush on him years ago....

Funny when my freind Sandy first saw Matt on Search for Tomorrow she though he looked like Micheal J. Fox, only taller.

Update for DR MBarnum:

Well, I made my Duane Reade run, and found the movie that DR Rodzinksi had mentioned...

It's called "Land of the Little People" (or "Jajantaram Mamantaram"), and has the tagline, "A problem of gigantic proportions".  Here's a blurb I found on a website:

Quote
With the tagline "A problem of gigantic proportions!" Indian director Soumitra Ranade presents a flamboyant Asian take on GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, with ample room for change from Swift's version. Jaaved Jaffrey (BOOM and GANG), Madhura Wellankar, Gulshan Grover (BANANA BROTHERS and AMERICAN DAYLIGHT), and Manav Kaul appear in this Indian epic.

I actually did not buy the DVD, but if you'd really like it, it's only $5.99.  And there were a couple of copies in the spinner-bin.

*I had also forgot to bring my $5.00 off coupon with me, so... ;)
Title: Re:I LED THIRTEEN LIVES

...And there were a bunch of other movies in that display. I was surprised to see the Jason Alexander/Vanessa Williams "Bye, Bye, Birdie" in there - also bargain priced at $5.99.  I was sort of tempted to buy that.  -Wasn't it a Disney/ABC title?

-However, there were a couple of other movies in that display that were of questionable origin.  Let's just say I wouldn't be surprised if they were bought from someone selling them from a tablecloth placed on the sidewalk.

And was the tagline for that one really, "He's All Shook Up"?

BK's very own Shakespeare On Broadway (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000014WX/sr=8-1/qid=1153353802/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-8129475-4158565?ie=UTF8) is made up of a whole bunch of songs from musicals that are based on Shakespeare plays...or at least lyrics taken from his works.  Sondheim's "Fear No More" has lyrics by Shakespeare AND he's actually a character in the show The Frogs (for which "Fear No More" was written). ;D

I was supposed to have a day off from work today.

Didn't work out that way.

Just as I sat down at the computer this morning, actually awake (the first time I woke up, I was awakened by the dogs, who wanted their doggy biscuit breakfasts, and I promptly went back to bed) and about to log on, the phone rang.  It was Larry, one of the sub-managers at work.  Someone had called and wouldn't be coming in to work, so could I?  I said sure.  He needed me in in less than 45 minutes.  I said sure, and forgot about logging on.

So I cleaned up, and headed in to work.

After work, der B and I headed over to the barber shoppe for haircuts.  This was at a new location for our barber shoppe, because the site where our barber shoppe used to be located had been announced as a new location for condos... and then someone had set fire to the entire location, just to make sure everyone got the the point.  We were lucky to find out about the new location.  We also got very nice haircuts.

Then, we stopped by a seafood store called Afishionado, where we picked up some tuna for dinner tonight.  Pricy, but we're worth it on occasion.

And then we stopped by Partners, for a cocktail or two, and enjoyed hearing some of the local gossip.

Then we came home, and I had a nap.

I'll have to decide how to cook that there tuna pretty soon.  I want it to be seared on the outside, rare on the inside.  I think my best bet will be to pop my cast iron pan in the oven, at a very high heat, and heat the pan in the oven before transferring the pan to the stovetop.  A couple of minutes, at most, on each side of the tuna should do the tuna proud.

This, along with a seaweed salad and pasta dressed with pesto and zucchini, that should make for a very nice meal.

And then I get to start planning tomorrow's dinner.

This comment somehow has more to say about North Carolina audiences than it does about the film.

Back from a lovelier than lovely dinner at Stanley's.  I feel like I ate a huge amount of food, only it really isn't so, so my tummy must be shrinking.  I had a small Caesar (really small this evening) and the cajun chicken pasta, which is cajun chicken over angel hair with tomatoes and mushrooms - very little else, just a little oil and garlic, so not that caloric in the scheme of things.

Just before I left a lady came in with a fella, and she stared at me and then finally came up to the table - it was Miss Leslie Ackerman, Susie in The First Nudie Musical (the one who lip synchs to The Lights and the Smiles).  Then, the fella she was with stared at me and asked if I'd gone to Crescent Heights Elementary School.  I mean, how odd is THAT?  He apparently knew me.  If I was reading the situation correctly, I believe they were having some sort of first date - my guess is it will be the last. :-)

I surprised even myself by some of the things I selected to watch tonight.

I began with the conclusion of BLOOD AND SAND. It's funny looking at some of the women of the silent days that with their heavy makeup and costumes, they sometimes looked decades older than they really were. Nita Naldi looked more like Valentino's mother than his lover in the movie.

Next came the third Hildegarde Withers murder mystery with Edna Mae Oliver - MURDER ON A HONEYMOON. Then came LOVELY TO LOOK AT. This was the TCM broadcast of the film, and it looks decidedly different from the Restored Technicolor versions on the videotape and laserdisc. Those have such fully saturated colors that they almost make your eyes hurt.

The TCM version was certainly colorful (and very sharp print, much sharper than the VHS or laserdisc), but the color was toned way down so the color bleeding was minimal (except for that dance that Marge and Gower do during the fashion show with all the garish red lighting).

Oh...  And there's been one "interesting" side effect of the high temperatures here in NYC (and other places) the past couple of days.  They have started rationing Playbills at the Broadway shows since the printing plant has had to shut down due to the heat.  When DR elmore and I saw Lieutenant of Inishmore last night, they were only handing out one program per couple.  And, apparently, at Spamalot and other shows, they ran out of Playbills last night, and had a very limited amount to hand out tonight.
