Title: THE HEATHER ON THE HILL
Post by: bk on July 22, 2006, 12:55:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've read about the heather on the hill and the Heather on the stage, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're on the hill looking for Heather - if they can't find Heather on the hill, perhaps they'll find Harold on the hill.

Seersucker.....I used to have one of those suits.

I shall now go back and read yesterday's posts.

My friend Jan's memorial was very nice....well attended.  She work in the career guidance office at Rose Hulman Institute and was certainly well liked and well respected there.

She was also one of the VERY FEW women to receive an Engineering Degree from Louisiana State University in the 1960's.  She always told the story of trying to find the Engineering Building her first day there, and being told she was mistaken, she must want some other building.  Finally she said she was looking for her brother, and was immediately directed to the department.

Most of her professors told her she would never graduate, would never receive her degree, and why did she want to be an engineer?  She did receive her Masters and spent several years working on many projects before settling in at Rose Hulman.

It is raining right now, right here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

We have had ourselves some thunder and some lightning, too, through the night.

This could dampen things if it keeps up through the day, because der Brucer and I are scheduled to attend a pool party this evening.

(Actually, it's an "everyone stands around the pool with a glass in one hand and gesturing with the other while talking with friends" party.  A friend of ours, Bob (spelled boB backwards), holds this get-together every year for the DC Log Cabin chapter and anyone else who wants to show up.  It'll be good to see Bob again, and his daschund, Beau.)

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountaintop, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

The obvious "they did a great job transferring that book to the screen" movie is To Kill a Mockingbird, of course.

Jackson did a very grand job transferring The Lord of the Rings to film.  Of course, he had three films to do it in, too.

The not-so-good transfer that sticks in my craw is Goldman's The Princess Bride, particularly since Goldman himself wrote the screenplay.  Try as they might, the film lacks the magic of the printed page, and just lays there like so many giant rodents.

Good morning all, yes, Rodzinski, I think Callie and Boo will make it.  I finally just treated them like teenagers and told them they couldn't see each other and didn't make any attempt to let them see each other for several days, AND I stopped them from trying to see each other.   I was hoping that , like teenagers, that would mean they HAVE to be together.  It didn't go that far, but yesterday went well and I'll let Boo out again later this morning and see how it goes today.

Today is the beginning of RAGBRAI (The Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa)  where around 20,000 to 30,000 people on bicycles - many of them drunk, ride across Iowa and every little town along the way sells food, beer and the stopover towns have dances and all sorts of crazy galas to entertain what is often many times more people than live in the town.  For a large portion of the riders, they start drinkning at the Missouri river and don't stop until they reach the Mississippi 6 days later.  It's sort of like Mardi Gras on bicycles - there are costumes the whol business.

It starts a few miles south of here, so I'm going down there tonight to take photos and hang out with a friend I haven't seen in ages who is going on the ride.  here's a link http://www.ragbrai.com/index.html

There are least 4 versions of CABARET out there.

The Broadway Version, The Joel Grey Revival, The Wayne Sleep Revival and the recent Broadway Revival.

Are they all available. I would think that the authors would want the most recent one out there. The only thing I don't like about the recent revival is that Cliff doesn't have a song of his own. A new one was written for the Joel Grey Revival and the combined the two "Money" songs into one.

A good trivia question today. I went off on one track  trying to find answer one question first. When that didn't pan out I went a different route and I think I got it.

They all fit, but there could be another show out there.

From what I understand, all but the Wayne Sleep version is available for licensing right now.  However, everyone seems to be doing a combination of all three - mainly to add the movie songs - although I've heard that the licensing house hasn't been as "agreeable" to granting permission to interpolate other songs from other versions lately.

TOD:
  Good adaptations:
     TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
     GONE WITH THE WIND
     THE MALTESE FALCON (Bogart version)
EMMA (Gwyneth Paltrow - although I prefer the BBC with Kate Beckinsale)
     ROSEMARY'S BABY

  Bad, bad, bad:
     THE DAVINCI CODE
     PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (Olivier/Garson)

What about films that improved on the book?
     JAWS
     THE FIRM

I'd say VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, as much as I enjoy the film, is worse than the book, mainly because the book covers a much longer period which gives a shape to the careers of the three women, and being under long-term contract to a studio really wasn't happening much when VALLEY OF THE DOLLS was filmed as a present day (1967) film. Set in the 1940s, Neely and Jennifer being under long term studio contracts made a lot more sense.

I would SWEAR I attended Heather MacRae's concert last night... but reading the notes, I can only surmise that (a) I didn't; or, (b) I'm just not one of the interesting people who attended. Same thing last week... maybe I only dream I hear these ladies singing live...

Anyway, I dreamed that I heard Heather MacRae sing a cabaret act last night. In my dream, she was simply stupendous. The voice is clear and rich and flexible and fresh and young! Her phrasing is sensitive and individual. She is a powerful presence, more charismatic than ever. Surry With The Fringe On Top was spellbinding. She is a magician.

Log this in the "theatre is a small world" category, BK. MOLLY CHEEK?!!!  When you see her again, asks her if she ever gets back to scenic Odessa, Texas, and the Globe of the Great Southwest.  I was a member of the summer company there, when she was dating an actor named Wayne Nary.  She was not a member of the company but was out staying with Wayne during the summer.  Molly was really nice and quite lovely.  Wayne and I did a scene in MacBeth every night.  He was playing MacDuff and I was Malcolm.  I was a big fan of Molly's when she was on the first Gary Shandling show.  Please give her my regards the next time you see her.

I agree with Woody about PRINCESS BRIDE.  I liked the film better than he apparently, but it is not a patch on the book which is perfect and magical.

I think the Stewart Granger movie of SCARAMOUCHE is much more fun than the book, largely because they keep him in the theatre longer in the movie...It is really only a small part of the book.

Books that have never been adapted properly to the screen TARZAN, SHE, KING SOLOMON'S MINES.

BEAU GESTE; THE MALTESE FALCON; & THE THIN MAN are three of my favourite books to movies.

Molly Cheek turned up today in my Trivia Contest searches (she is not, I believe, part of the correct answer, so fear not, spoiler-phobes).

For those who may not have seen my late, late post last night:  there is, unbelievably, a steel drum ensemble recording of Le Sacre, which I heard on XM last night.  I am still sitting here mouth agape 12 hours after having heard it.  It's surprisingly wonderful.

Bad adaptations:  Siddhartha.  Oy.

I find THE PRINCESS BRIDE extrememly watchable and magical. Probably one of the movies I've seen the most in my life. But I never read the book, so there was nothing to be disappointed by.

Jack Warden is in a movie I believe is an improvement on the book, FROM HERE TO ETERNITY.

A COLD DAY IN AUGUST, THE LOVED ONE and CATCH-22 are ones that aren't entirely faithful to their books, but I think are good cinematic adaptations.

GRAPES OF WRATH has the perfect cast, the perfect look, it just leaves out a lot of key moments that they couldn't include at that time.

Bad ones:
Orson Welles' THE TRIAL.

Yes, Penny and I discussed Mr. Warden last night.  I only met him briefly at one of the Crazy Like A Fox cast parties.

PennyO was there last night and the week before - she didn't dream it!  I, of course, am senile when writing the notes late at night and what she'll realize is that I've only listed people who were in the front section - my mind goes blank when I think of the back section.  Also in attendance (in the front section yet), Buddy Bregman.

I received a package from the UK yesterday (and I was shocked at how fast it arrived) - the I, Claudius miniseries, which I'm really looking forward to viewing based on all that I read here.  I'd held off getting the region one version because of all the negative comment about the quality.  Then I went to amazon.uk and apparently the UK release is MUCH better quality, like night and day.  It was fairly inexpensive, too, and also included some cool extras like interviews with the actors, etc.  Like the region one, it also has the wonderful The Epic That Never Was documentary about the aborted Josef von Sternberg film version with Charles Laughton.

Make sure you hydrate, BK...and anyone else who's going to be outside for any length of time!!  The temperature here in Olympia yesterday was 101° F!  There's an article (http://www.theolympian.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060722/NEWS/60722002) in today's Olympian (http://www.theolympian.com/) that says:

The thermometer at Olympia Regional Airport rose to a record 101 degrees Friday. The previous record for July 21 was 96 degrees, set in 1994. Three other Washington cities also set records: Vancouver at 104, Seattle at 97, and Hoquiam at 90.

Temperatures of 100 and higher have happened only eight times in Olympia since 1948, said Ted Buehner, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Seattle.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Olympia was 104 degrees on Aug. 9, 1981. The last time it hit 100 degrees was July 28, 1998.

I have to go to work today, and my building is literally right next to the Olympia Airport!  AND I don't think they turn on the air conditioning on the weekends! :P Maybe they will today, but I don't know.  I'll find out soon enough. :-\

And still not adapted: "A Princess of Mars" (though Paramount has the latest try "John Carter of Mars" on hold).

Cillaliz-I’ll see if I can get tickets for the 5th.  I need to check with my niece & my friends in Pennsylvania (you met one of them).  I also need to find out if the other friend, who recently had the lung surgery, will be up to meeting me in NY or if I will need to go visit her.

Speaking of being up for the walking/eating tour..... Jose I don’t know if I can do another eating tour.  I would like to go to get some marbled halvah at Russ & Daughters, marzipan at Bruno’s bakery and maybe get Keith some more charms at Economy Candy, but only if it is convenient.  If I’m in the area, I would like to check out the jewelry at-hmmm-where did I get my watch & earrings?

Rodzinski, I echo Woody's advice:

READ THE BOOK!  I think Goldman actually did a very good adaptation for a book that is very hard to adapt.  Unfortunately, many of the most wonderful things in the book the running commentary and  Goldman's asides on the "Good Parts" version as opposed to the unedited Morgenstein version and just his wonderful prose style couldn't have been successful captured in a cinematic adaptation.

It is a book I used to keep several paperback copies of just to pass out to friends.  My first edition is one of my most prized books.

I almost always find the book better than the movie (I noted earlier my one exception) and PRINCESS BRIDE, the novel, is way, way better than PRINCESS BRIDE, the movie.

I've said it many times, but I feel the best book to film is Rosemary's Baby.  That film is literally the book (with exactly one little scene missing - they shot it and cut it - it was a throwaway early on in the film.

There are many terrible book to film adaptations, one of the worst of which is the remake of The Stepford Wives.

DR PennyO -- where is this Gypsy production going to be?

It's in Upland, CA. I had a really HOT audition - I drove over there in a car WITHOUT air-conditioning... it was 104 in Upland today. But at least the studio was NOT air-conditioned, either, and the temperature inside was 106. I was in a wig.

The director is John Vaughan, choreographer Lee Martino - both really good local people, and they are a joy to audition for - very good sports to sit there in that heat and smile and laugh, such nice folks. Anyway - there were 12 of us. Equity singers first. Then a dance combination with everyone.

Kidz, I looked great, even "danced" great. Okay, please wait outside for a few moments... then, Yolanda, Pam, stick around - the rest of you, thanks a lot.

So it seems that, though the director and choreographer really liked me a lot, the music director actually wanted someone who could sing it... heck! It's full of low G's and A's... sometimes I have an A, barely. Ah, well. It was fun to audition for John and Lee. I guess this means I still have to go to San Antonio and drive that rig back... sigh...

I had several telephone calls this afternoon, all fun and informative. I only had time for one film - the laserdisc of A WOMAN'S FACE.

I had only seen this movie once prior to today, so imagine my surprise to be reminded that the supporting cast included MGM stalwarts like Marjorie Main (not playing her usual  outrageous character but a much more buttoned-down woman), Reginald Owen, Donald Meek, and Henry Daniell. One of Joan's best at MGM by far.

(A Girl from Utah reference, of course).

Oy.  I have been spending all afternoon doing a huge music editing (as in WAV files) job because the idiots wouldn't believe me when I told them recording an amateur children's choir on songs with up to 20 verses (no joke) virtually doomed them to failure without adequate rehearsal time.  So here I am cobbling together sometimes 4-5 second moments from various takes to get a usable piece.  Add to this it's already mixed down to a master with the accompaniment (I know, I know), and you have some idea of the challenge I'm facing.  I must say it's sounding better than I expected, but my expectations were nil, LOL.  The good news they now owe me more money than evah!!  (I did the sequencing/arrangements for the original sessions).

Hi all.  I finely had a moment to sit down and read posts and the phone rings!   By the time got off the phone I forgot  I was on line.

We were threatened with a big bad thunder storm this afternoon right when I wanted to mow the grass.  I bought a new cheep lawn mower since the other one broke down and went out to use it.  I thought lawn mowers were put together--all the ones I bought in past only had to have the handles raised and they were ready to go.

Imagine my suprise when I opened the box and it was nothing but a bunch of parts!

I put it back in the car and took it back to the store (Walmart) who offed to have it assembled for me.  I should get it by next weekend but the yard really needs to be done.  So I guess I'll have to use the electric mower tomorrow.  Sigh.

Since my boss didn't get back in time, we have to go into Tampa tomorrow to get that package for the conference.

I really don't want to go but I guess it is a must.

They are talking about starting four 10 hour work days now.  You have your choice as to if you want to stay with the same 8 hour/5 days or the 4/10.  I'm not sure which to pick.  I don't think I could do the 4/10 with Mom but it would sure make life nice.

A friend of mine ended up catching me online earlier, and wanted to know if I had had dinner yet.  Since I didn't, we met up at John's Pizzeria in The Village.  Sooo good as always.  *And  I have to say the pricing structure at the Village location is much "nicer" than the one up on 44th.  -Heck, even the large pizzas are just $2.00 more than the small/mediums.

Since there was less than an hour left before I wanted to get on-line, I took a TWILIGHT ZONE DVD off the shelf. I have the old DVDs that put three or four episodes per disc. I watched two of them off this disc.

First up was "I Shot an Arrow Into the Air," a show from the first season. Dewey Martin was the star, and I did remember having seen this one before, so the surprise ending wasn't much of a surprise.

...of course I also made the mistake of wondering over to the CD section and picked up TITO PUENTE: Dance Mania, ROUGH GUIDE TO BHANGRA DANCE, JOHN PIZZARELLI: Bossa Nova, and CHEB SABBAH: La Kahena Remixed...plus they had tons of really nice birthday and other greeting cards on close-out for 2 for $1.00!

Next was "Still Valley" with Gary Merrill which I hadn't ever seen before and enjoyed very much. Had to do with a Confederate soldier faced with the possibility of winning the Civil War by renouncing God and using some spells from a Witchcraft book that paid homage to Satan. A satisfying little parable.

Stars Arjun Rampal and Diya Murza.
