Title: NOTES ON A FULL STOMACH

Well, you've read the notes, you've read the notes on a full stomach, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off reading the notes on a full stomach.

BK, did you delete (or forget) a post?  Because you usually start with "You've read the notes..." and THEN "And the word of the day is...."  Very unusual. ::)

Well...today is (potentially) a very important day in Washington State's history:

Gay marriage ruling set for release at 8 a.m. tomorrow (http://www.theolympian.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060725/NEWS04/60725009)

(and now, It's Today!...a Jerry Herman reference ;)).

The state Supreme Court, which has been deliberating gay marriage since hearing arguments in March 2005, will release its decision Wednesday at 8 a.m.  The local TV news reports have been saying "as early as 8 a.m."  The article goes on:

The 38 plaintiffs in the case -- 19 gay and lesbian couples seeking to marry, including Olympia city councilman Jeff Kingsbury -- challenged the constitutionality of the state's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act, which limits marriage to heterosexual couples.

If the same-sex marriage ban (DOMA) is ruled unconstitutional, gay and lesbian couples could apply for marriage licenses as early as noon!

Wow. We had the biggest, loudest storm I've ever seen in all my years of living in the desert. It was frightening.  Thunder and lightening crashing right overhead.  I went over to check out the condition of the church, and the police officers wouldn't let me cross the street -- there is a huge metal power pole laying in the road.  I'm surprised they got our power back on in six hours.

One neighbor seems to have lost part of his roof, and many trees are down, as well. There's a sheet of something metal in my front yard. I think my house is fine -- I'll have to have a better look in the morning.

I remember seeing the late 1960s documentary, The Epic That Never Was, which is the story of the debacle that was the aborted Josef von Sternberg version of I, Claudius from the late 1930s. It was fascinating and it was also interesting to watch Charles Laughton in the lead role and also in it was Merle Oberon, Flora Robson and Emeline (Sp?) Williams. Don't know why I remember that after all these years. But it was fascinating to watch. I know I saw it when I lived in Canada. So it may have been on the CBC. I always wondered why all those scenes were saved from a film that was never completed.

I went to bed shortly after getting home.

I woke up every two to three hours thereafter, and basically rolled over and went back to sleep.  Not easy to do with a hundred-and-twenty pound Dalmatian taking up much of my bed.   :P

That amounted to something like eightteen hours of sleep.

I think I've burned off most of the cold, however.

And der Brucer hasn't complained about my not yet cooking his dinner.

That will come later, I expect.

Good morning, all!  I'm a bit groggy this morning, but I forced myself out of bed by 7:30, which is an hour later than I'm accustomed to beginning my day.  This abscess - and my cold - have let me be self-indulgent for the past few days.

Today I'm back to Toyland for a few hours and tonight Mr Ron Raines and I are going to SWEENEY TODD; I believe our friend Judy Kaye is playing Mrs Lovett for the nonce.  I had been raving to Mr Raines about THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE last week after my wonderful evening out with our DR Jose, and Mr Raines saw it last Saturday night.  We've been laughing over its outrageousness ever since.

TOD:  Dear Friend BK, I don't see any contractual material amongst this music?

DR DearReaderLaura - I hope that metal thing in your front yard is not from your house.
Title: Re:NOTES ON A FULL STOMACH
Post by: DearReaderLaura on July 26, 2006, 06:59:46 AM
The metal thing in my front yard is nothing compared to metal things scattered around my neighborhood.

My house seems to be ok -- we had it roofed a couple years ago, so we did ok. Others are missing many shingles -- and the flat-roofed houses are missing their roofs.

Now that it is light and I can see better, the huge metal power pole is really bent at the base and leaning across the road, and all down the road you can see the wooden power poles are lying in the street.

The church had several puddles inside, and we have a bit of yard cleanup, but other than that, I think we're ok.

THE EPIC THAT NEVER WAS is one of the best behind the scenes documentaries ever made. It's fascinating to see Charles Laughton struggling to find the character within himself and how tough he is on what he delivers. Looked wonderful to my eyes and ears.

While a film version couldn't do justice to the story the way the miniseries did, I think this film would have been one of the greats. Certainly the footage we're shown of Laughton and Emlyn Williams and FLora Robson looks wonderful.

Totally forgot about EUREKA last night. I never got around to watching the two hour premiere (still on the DVR), and I may just decide to skip the whole thing. I'll look to see if I can record the second episode, and if so, I guess I will give it a try. If not, I'll just delete the premiere and look elsewhere for entertainment.

I also saw THE EPIC THAT NEVER WAS (and I, CLAUDIUS) oh so many years ago on PBS and enjoyed them both VERY MUCH.

Soon afterwards on PBS was a miniseries based on an Emile Zola novel, and I want to say NANA, but I don't think that's right....but it was great!!

My question for ASK BK day.....does a choreographer for the movies DO the whole number.....and who chooses when there are cuts for closeups and reaction shots....the director or the editor.

Lots of times there are many parts of a number that are never shown, and I have wondered if the choreographer and dancers worked for hours on measures of music that never got seen....or were never shot.

It really depends on the film.  Things like Singin' In The Rain are so carefully planned out that cuts cannot be made anywhere where they're not wanted.  More modern films, they cut where they please - usually the editor puts it together and the director changes what he wishes, and then sometimes the studios change that.  Something like Chicago is interesting, in that the director is the choreographer, he stages the numbers, but shoots them with many, many cameras and it's all assembled in the editing room, like a TV special.  Not my favorite way of having a musical number done.  I much prefer the well thought out and planned West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and any of the Kelly/Donen musicals.

After taking Molly to the airport, I wanted to watch a movie that didn't make me think! So I put in GRAND PRIX which arrived yesterday.

The DVD was discussed here in detail last week.....I enjoyed the extras (didn't watch them all ) - but the car sounds on the extras seemed BETTER than the car sounds in the movie....hmmmm.

I also thought that Mr Sidney Guilaroff - who was in charge of hair, makeup and costume selection (!) for the ladies...did NONE of them any favors in any of those departments.  Most of the clothes were terrible and there didn't seem to be any thought behind any of them.  Poor Eva Marie Saint fared the worst....especially hair wise!

The ONLY dress that was actually attractive and fit well was the one that Genevieve Page wore to the final race.....

Oh well....

My question, too!!!

Anyway, good morning to all. And another packed day, in anticipation of good news from the San Antonio repair shop... I may be heading out as early as tonight, and beginning the long drive through Hell tomorrow morning. Fingers x'd.

On another note - for me, always the High B-flat - I have been unsuccessful at scaring up a cast for a This-Week reading of The Play. At this rate, it may be necessary to move such a reading to mid-September. Which will be here in a flash, if Time keeps moving like this...

Off I go - have a good one, Kidz.

I got the same as I had before...Tidal Wave Blue Hyundai 4 dr hatchback...but this one is a 2006 with 101 miles on it and with cruise-control (which is standard with the 2006 models). I almost went with the white one, but didn't like the interior colors.

I only had to shell out (actuall, charge on my visa) an extra 400 dollars, but what can you do. I am just happy to be done with it all and to have a car again!!

He is now an English high school teacher in the LA area and has been married for 42 years to kid actress Sharon Manns (they were high school sweethearts), who played "girl on a donkey" in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS! LOL!

And of course Mamie Van Doren "wrote" in her autobiography that Doris Day ordered several of her scenes cut from TEACHER'S PET because she didn't want the competition of another blonde.  My opinion is that Doris didn't even know Mamie was IN the movie!  ::)

Maybe you will walk past the Carroll Baker dressing room - oh, no wait....it was gutted when she wanted to do an outside picture per her contract.

She went back to get her personal belongings, and there was only a shell of the building left.

Kind of like one day Jerry Lewis was the king of Paramount and the next day....all of his pictures, posters, and caricatures had disappeared.

I knew a girl from a small Mexican border town who had a credit, "Girl under donkey."
Why was she having to carry the donkey?  Did he get a stone stuck in his hoof?  Did he appreciate her trying to help him?  Did he enjoy the view?

Do I really have to stick a smiley on this?   ::) :-*

I caught half of Hootnanny Hoot this morning. It's the same half I always catch. Judy Henske is an interesting singer...but no one should have to sing in a two-piece bathing suit.

Well...that's true.  However the dancing kudos in HH go to the Dodge Rebellion Girl....forget her name....although the Hal Belfer dances are pretty dismal.

I love Judy Henske!  The first time I met Shel Silverstein, I asked him whatever happened to her.  He wrote the liner notes to her first recording.  I was so happy when that album came out on CD about two years ago.

No One Should Have To Sing In A Two-Piece Bathing Suit - that's the title of my next novel.

Or is it a song my Meltz and Ernest?

No one should have to sing in a two-piece bathing suit
No one listens to the notes - they just see the girl who's cute
No you cannot sing Puccini
In a really small bikini
And you cannot sing the score to Sweeney Todd
It would be odd with so much bod
Everyone's eyes would be cruisin'
So forget about singing songs by Cahn and Van Heusen
I'm resolute
That no one should have to sing
In a two-piece bathing suit.

I spent the entire afternoon watching MILLION DOLLAR MERMAID and burning a DVD-R of it. It's longer than I remembered it being with a smattering of facts amid the fiction.

I think I read at the HTF that there is going to be an Esther Williams DVD boxed set next year with this film and several of her other hits in it (NEPTUNE'S DAUGHTER, BATHING BEAUTY, EASY TO LOVE). But, I went ahead and burned this anyway. The powers that be at Warners may change their minds and not release it.

Judy Henske does indeed have her own website I was there this morning.

I thought the loose-legged guy who danced with Pamela Austin (the Dodge rebellion girl) was pretty interesting.  What was not interesting was the one spot-light they used to cover the dance, leaving one of them in shadow half the time.  The other choreography bit I found hysterical was the dancer in Sheb Wooly's "Build a Railroad" number, who kept holding his sledge hammer up close to the mallet.  Yeah, that sweet tart was really going to drive the railroad spike deep.

The reason I advise Judy Henske, not a greatest looker anyway, not to sing in a two-piece is because shaking her leg as vigourously as she was displayed a lot of jiggling flesh...not in a nice way...up on her thigh.

BK & I saw Peter Breck at one of the Ray Court shows, wearing a really big cowboy hat.  He seemed very friendly and cordial with his fans, but as he's gotten older, his skin seems to have shrivelled around his skull and his always prominent teeth now really stand out. What a set of choppers. Of course, by now, they could be false.  But if I was a deer at night, I'd freeze in the gleam of those as quickly as any headlight.  He kept looking at me every time I'd pass and grin with a look as though he knew me...We had met years ago when I followed him into a dinner theatre in Odessa, Texas.  He was very friendly at the time and seemed like a heck of a nice guy, but our meeting was fleeting.

Unfortunately, B&Bs in Manhattan are not much cheaper, if cheaper at all, than hotels. I've looked into them for friends and they usually run anywhere from $150 a night to $250-$300 a night. Ouch! Keep looking and ee what you can find but you may end up at the Comfort Inn on 46th Street since you have the reservation

DR Ben - one of my interesting finds is this apartment (http://www.manhattangetaways.com/index2.php3?i=9&VID=1&id=331), which appears to be in your neighborhood!  This outfit says thay their one-bedroom apartments run between $175 and $225/night, which is competitive with the CI.

Lance Bass is gay.

He says so in PEOPLE magazine.

I know everyone here will be shocked and suprised to hear it.

Well he was sort of forced out of the closet. He is seeing Reichen (sp?) the former half of the gay couple who won the Amazing Race. It had been all over the gossip boards. Many times as blind items. But it wasn;t hard to guess who was who.

Oh, my! A B&B on 16th Street. I'm not surprised. I don't know if it's between 5th and 6th Avenues (my block) or between 6th and 7th Avenue (one block over). It's a great location for you because the FC is just half a block or a block away (5th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets) depending on where you are, from the B&B. If it's available it sounds like a great deal and it would make getting together so easy! There is much to do in the neighborhood. You would be just a few blocks from Chelsea Market on 9th Avenue and 16th Street and there are nice places to eat, most of the subways are within a few blocks of each other. I would be very tempted.

Back from a really fun lunch in the Paramount commissary.  No, there was nobody interesting there - a sad, sad comment on today's film and TV business.  When I worked there, I saw John Wayne in the commissary.  The first time I walked on that lot in December of 1970 to shoot The Young Lawyers, the first person I saw as I was walking to the stage was Mike Connors, who waved to me and said hi.  THOSE were the days.  I doubt I would have even recognized any of "today's" actors.

After lunch, I had to go to storage to get Susan Egan some music.  She met me there.  One box was easy to find - unfortunately, the other box was at the bottom of a pile of ten boxes, in the back.  No air at all.  Within seconds I was sweating like a pig.  It took me fifteen minutes to move stuff out of the way so I could GET to the pile of boxes, and then I had to move the ten boxes to get to the one I wanted.  But, she's got what she needs now so all is well.

I then went to my DVD place to trade in some stuff and happily they had the about to be released Mr. Moto set, so I got that, and I also scored quite big and got a copy of the Brokeback Mountain Oscar promo score CD.  I don't really care about it, but I am a collector of Oscar promo score CDs, which frequently feature music not on the regular released CDs.  The Brokeback CD has been going on eBay for as high as five hundred bucks.  I got mine for forty and actually put out no cash - just used my credit.

Just checked the last three copies of the Brokeback promo on eBay - one went for just over three hundred bucks, and the other two for over two hundred sixty, so it's still commanding very high prices.

Yes, something was awry, not that they ever tell me what.  All I know is that it is nothing that we're to do with - when we fixed the problem they were having, nothing about the site itself can cause these problems.  I was sort of assured that that would be the end of problems, but as we've seen little hiccups do pop up from time to time.  I'm glad I came to the computer before six - after that we would have been at the mercy of e-mails and who knows if anyone would have seen mine.  I was able to call and they fixed it immediately.  My e-mail response from them?  "Fixed."  Nothing about what it was.  Oh, well, at least it was fixed immediately.

I'm bored of Mr. Zadan and Mr. Meron and I wish they'd stop mangling good properties, but with their kind of ego the mangling knows no bounds, I'm afraid.  And are they doing the Broadway Peter Pan or some other Peter Pan?  I'm sure they'll try to offer Peter to Kristin Chenoweth or maybe if they do enough drugs they'll offer it to Idina Menzel.

I'm trying to decide what to do about food - do I want to eat anything else (my salad today was pretty low-cal - I figure even with the piece of bread and butter I had it's only about six hundred calories, plus I jogged and then did all that heavy sweaty lugging).  So, I can definitely eat something, but what is the question.  Do I want a candy bar to assuage my sweet tooth, or do I want someting a bit more substantial like an entire pizza (only kidding, although I would like an entire pizza - let there be no doubt).

Oh, and they did bring a dessert tray to the table - I abstained, but my favorite dessert was a big glob of whipped cream.  That was the dessert.

I'm back from SWEENEY TODD, the last great opera of the 20th Century, and Judy Kaye was not in; I saw Patti Lupone.  I've seen the original cast, the dreadful TEENY TODD of the early 1990s and now this, which was better than the 1991 version.  This new version, which I think is another example of critics raving over the second-rate, should be titled SWEENEY TODD OR THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET AS PRESENTED BY THE INMATES OF THE ASYLUM OF CHARENTON UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE MARQUIS DE SADE, since a lot of its gimmicks seem lifted from Peter Brooks great epic production of MARAT/SADE fro the Royal Shakespeare Co.  I know that our DR Pogue saw this version in London and loved it.  I might enjoy it if I saw it as an "experimental" piece off-off-Broadway in a basement or tiny space somewhere, but it's a waste of a lot of money.

Those of you who want to see the great Lupone in SWEENEY TODD will do better with the San Francisco Orchestra concert.  The cast in this is almost uniformly excellent but the Anthony who has a strange face with one of those ridiculous little goatees, contorts himself outrageously as he sings, although he sang a beautiful "Joanna," and my friend Donna Lynne Champlin as Pirelli proves it's a role for a tenor; I'd rather see her as the Beggar Woman, but she plays a mean flute and accordion.  The Tobias, Judge Turpin, and Beadle, especially are quite wonderful.

The production reminds me of the atrocities of Ann Bogart and other "artistes"  in nonsensical direction; it's a SWEENEY TODD for people who either already know the story or don't care what the story is.  I miss the gothic horror of the Beadle's body falling out of the chute and landing at Tobias' feet, I miss actors actually relating to each other in a scene, which hardly ever happens in this production.  I liked the orchestration much better than I anticipated, but I don't want to see Anthony walk into a scene with Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett while dragging around a cello.  The words of THE GOLDEN APPLE, it's a fraud.

And are they doing the Broadway Peter Pan or some other Peter Pan?

Definitely the Broadway PETER PAN/Charlap-Leigh/Styne-Comden and Green. Meron mentioned that he has been wanting to do this since he and Jule Styne talked about it when they produced the Bette Midler GYPSY.

I guess what intrigues me about the Lance Bass thing is why anyone cares. Same with the Christy Brinkley thing.

A SWEENEY TODD warning:  the director has staged the piece on a platform as wide as the center seating section of the auditorium so the seats on the side have obstructed viewing by the blocking.  I was in the front row on the side, and all I saw of the opening scene between Anthony (all the way backstage), the Beggar Woman who's soliciting him (in the middle of the stage) and Sweeney (down front) was Donna Lynne Champlin, sitting in a chair and blocking my entire view of the scene, which contained no character relationships:  the Beggar woman could have been soliciting anybody in the theatre since she didn't relate to Anthony at all.  A lot of the viewing was obstructed by the director's lack of keeping the sightlines good, but maybe he preferred it that way.

For curiosity sake, I wouldn't have minded seeing the SWEENEY TODD in NYC now, but I have to admit after seeing so many versions over the years that had large ensembles, I was shocked when the tiny ensemble on TV during the Tonys sang "Swing your razors high, Sweeney" and there was almost no SOUND. That was almost always one of the truly electrifying moments in the show for me, but during the TOnys, it seemed just puny.

My cat sitter stopped in to meet Boo and find out how I have things arranged.  I have to admit it's nice to have a professional animal sitter stop in. She has a business called Critter Sitters.  I probably would rely on a neighbor kid if Callie didn't need meds twice a day

I watched three more MEDIUM episodes from the Season 1 set tonight.

The one with Ariel dreaming she's a fairy princess which led to the search for a missing girl was a strange episode but not one of my favorites.

Another episode introduced us to Allison's brother just back from the Middle East with a guilty secret he's trying to rub out with liquor. Very affecting episode. I like the actor who plays Allison's brother.

I think it's going to be a late night.  The dryer is still going and I have to be packed before I go to bed so I can head out of town as soon as I'm off work tomorrow night.

The third episode had Allison near a breakdown due to dreaming the same dream for weeks on end about two young boys trying to outrun a train. Again, the story came to a very emotional conclusion, a very satisfying one for that story. A second case which she couldn't work on due to her exhausted condition didn't have such a happy ending.

I watched another episode of THE WILD WILD WEST to finish the third disc in the set. This is one that starred Burgess Meredith as a crackpot geologist trying to gain all of Wyoming for himself. Kathie Browne (who later married Darren McGavin) was the love interest in this episode.

And then I watched CSI: NY, a rerun episode that I missed during the regular season involving the Mafia-style Tanglewood boys, a carryover story from Season 1 with Michael DeLuise as the primary guest star. Again, a very emotional and affecting episode, one of the best of the second season.

It Wasn't Meant To Happen (one of my favorite vocals - Michele Pawk - I've ever recorded - magnificent) - obviously it was either sung by Sally or Phyllis.  I'm not sure which - it really could be either - somehow it fits both characters.

That's where I went to lunch this afternoon! One person at the table had the "Double Stacker" combo (he had a coupon), and he also liked it. I had my usual Whopper combo with a side salad.

Yeah, Lance Bass, big revelation that was...yawwwn!  Only pre-pubescent girls with no gaydar could have been shocked by this coming out.

I don't know.  I wasn't shocked by his being gay, but I was shocked about his coming out.

I must also confess that the Lance Bass confession took me by surprise as well.  Frankly, I'm not sure I even know how to pronounce his last name.

If you haven't found out yet, it's b+ass like the fish, not "base" like the ball. :)

There's a double-stacker with two patties, a triple-stacker with three and a quadruple with four patties!  That's just too much! :P
