Title: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Post by: bk on July 28, 2006, 12:07:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had The Butterfly Effect and have changed the world, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to change the world so that they can then have The Cow Effect.  Fat chance, cows.

And the word of the day is: EXPLICATE!
Gerald's attempts to EXPLICATE the instructions "PLACE EXIT sign above egress door" by rephrasing them in twelve or thirteen different ways were doomed from the start, since his work crew only spoke Klingon.

Good morning, all!  I had a wonderful dinner last night with my friends Cathie and Alice, whom I haven't seen in eons.   Cathie's been through knee surgery and physical therapy, and stairs are a problem for her; she just retured last June and now operamania and diva biographies are consuming her liesure hours.  Alice just retired as principal of a school in the Bronx, and in the past year she's been to Hawaii and to Oregon for family events.  It was a wonderful 3-hour Italian dinner at Al Dente on Amsterdam Avenue, and it was such fun to catch up on a lot of gossip with two wonderful ladies.

Today, I'm off to Toyland for a few hours, then back here to veg out before my trek back to the Village to see our DR Jose's show.

TOD:
CD:  Jeepers Creepers, Sinatra sings Porter
  DVD:  Julius Caesar, several operas
  VCR:  cheap porn

DROWSY CHAPERONE SPOILER

Unless it's changed since the preview I saw, I'm fairly sure the spitting goes both ways.  There are several spit takes.  They are hilarious, but I started wondering about the real-life actors' health a little, in this fabulous show.

DR DJL,  that's so effusive!  And appreciated.  Thanks so much.  What do you think of that whole brouhaha involving Vera Charles and that snippy post?  I'm grateful to our DR JMK for referring me to the Cast Recording list.

I'm also happy that my friend Larry Blank is so literate as well; I've known him since 1981 or so, and he's always been such a fantastic raconteur.  It was Larry who introduced me to Harvey Schmidt, and I'm eternally grateful for that.  If he ever gives up his career as a wonderful orchestrator and conductor, he should go onto the lecture circuit.

Um... That was my "alarm" this morning.  Since I had to head out anyway to move my car, I was able to check out the source of the commuter aggravation.  It turned out to be a broken traffic signal a block away from my apartment.  It was stuck on red.  So, when the traffic starting building up, the horns started going... And they were usually right outside my apartment, so..  But at least it got me up and out of bed.  :-\

Well...  I think between the two of you, you could write an exhaustive history of musical theatre... As well as a great book of "stories" about some of the luminaries, would-be luminaries, and thinks-they-are-a-luminary in this biz.  Well, make that books.

Hmm...  Larry & Larry - Sounds like a team to me!

DRs TPunk and Jose, re: last night's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

OMG, first off did you guys see benji and heidi dance the night before? I'm curious to know what you thought of them.

And second, re: last night's elimination. I was shocked too. I think that everyone was expecting natalie to go home. I thought that heidi was safe for sure. And that it woudl be between donyelle and allison as to who else was in the bottom 2.

I think that donyelle's pairing with benji for all those shows really helped her popularity.

As for the men, i knew benji was safe. And i was sort of thinking that ivan might be more popular than travis (although i think travis is a better dancer). But i was pretty sure ryan was going home. He just did not have an outgoing personality.

But back to the shocker. I cannot believe that america voted out allison. She was so fantastic (and my favorite after benji and heidi). I really cannot understand what happened. :(

Good morning!

As DR Jose's weather report last night mentioned, it seems to be hot and humid up and down the East Coast. We certainly aren't getting out of the 90s for the entire weekend and on into next week with the same forecast each day - hot, muggy, and a chance of afternoon thundershowers.

A question for all you musical theatre mavens out there... -And I know there are a lot of you out there... ;)

Does anyone know if there is a breakdown of sorts listing the differences between the major versions of Cabaret?  Original 1966, the movie, the 1987, and the 1998 Sam Mendes versions - oh, and I guess even the London Wayne Sleep version in 1986(?).

I've been Googling away, and I'm coming across some info.  However, I'm just wondering if there's some book or guide out there listing the variations.

Ooh Jennifer, I think it would have been a good idea to put spoiler alerts with your comments.  Here are my thoughts about the show- SPOILER ALERTS!!

Benji and Heidi dancing together were great, instant chemistry.  I was very surprised to see Alison go, but I agree with Jose's earlier comments that at this point in the competition, it will be sad to see anyone go.  I was expecting to see Donyelle in the bottom 2, she really got lucky in my opinion cause both her dances seemed just okay to me.  But again, at this point I feel like the only fair way to eliminate them would be to draw names out of a hat.  They are all great.

I went to Academy after lunch and what was in their window but the 1994 Broadway Angel release of Canterbury Tales starring George Rose and Hermione Baddeley and Martyn Green. It also has amongst the cast members, Miss Sandy Duncan and Reid Shelton. I have this show on vinyl and now I don't need to transfer it to CD!

I also picked up a copy of Lone Star Love, a musical version of The Merry Wives of Windsor set in post-Civil War Texas. I saw it Off-Broadway a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. The show was supposed to move to another venue but it never happened. The CD has been out for a while(it's from PS Classics) but it was rather expensive (IMHO). I knew if I waited long enough it would show up. I keep waiting for Dessa Rose to appear at Academy. Now that's an expensive cast recording. It's over $30 in all the retail music stores. It will probably be around $15 to $20 if/when it comes to Academy.

Well, one the other night was hilarious! The panel was trying to guess a product that had to do with cows...Dorothy asked if it was something that touched the cow in a certain area, and then started laughing...she covered her face with her hand and told the others on the panel that she had a very silly thought...then Arlene Francis said "a bull?" and everybody just cracked up...especially the guest whose profession they were trying to figure out (it was an elderly lady who had invented a back scratcher for cows).

It was the first time I had noticed Dorothy acting a bit giddy...she was usually fairly serious...but this time she seemed to be high on something!

Had a great trip here.  Both flights were early. Totally full, but early.  From Denver to LA, I sat next to a family with two teenagers...the parents had told them all summer they were going on a vacation to Wyoming.  Just before they got on the plane, they saw the REAL itinerary...Hawaii!   Brittany - the girl next to me came running down the aisle to her seat.  Before even saying "hello" She held out the itinerary toward me and sad "OH MY GOD.....OH MY GOD......LOOK WHERE WE ARE GOING!!!!!"   I was then filled in on the whole story. Her excitement was really fun to be around.  The two ladies behind me were from Arkansas. They were laughing  and joking around - not obnoxious, just thrilled to be on a plane going away from Arkansas.  It really set a nice mood

Well, I ventured out for a bit to run some errands.  Some of the errands were "successful", one of the errands - the important one - still remains unfulfilled.  -Just where in the freck is that check being sent from?!?!?!?  In any case...

As for "So You Think You Can Dance?"...

I think a neat twist for the upcoming third season would be to make the choreographers part of the competition - like the designers and models on "Project Runway".

There haven't been any real bad routines this season, but there have been some less-than-fully-entertaining ones.  And that's the luck of the draw.  As as semi-fan of professional ballroom dancing, even some of those traditional dances when done perfectly don't come close to the mass appeal of a hip-hop or pop routine.  If they tie the choreographers into the competition, then that would raise the stakes all around.

...It's just a thought.

*I also keep wishing that if they're going to do a "Broadway" routine, that they challenge the contestants to recreate the original dances.  -I had a problem with the "Fake Your Way To The Top" routine the other night - it was just soooo wrong, at least in the context of the show.

**And I also think it would be nice to see the couples all do the same routine every now and then.  This way, they're all on an even playing field, and then it will truly be all in the details and presentation.

Just spoke to Cillaliz and we'll definitely be getting together tomorrow at some point.  She's going to check to see if her hotel is near a subway stop - if it is, she can subway down to LACC, as there's a stop just a half-block from the school.  Then, we'd go out after the show, or maybe even before the show.  We shall see.

Ooh Jennifer, I think it would have been a good idea to put spoiler alerts with your comments.  Here are my thoughts about the show- SPOILER ALERTS!!

Do you think we need spoiler alerts if it happened last night? I know that there are only a few people here who watch.  And my first line was "re: last night's show". I figured if anybody had not watched that they would stop reading there.

But if anyone needs spoiler space still, i can do that.

I really don't know if anyone has gone to the trouble of breaking down the various CABARETs though I think all the different stage versions would make an interesting outline to see what was added and subtracted.

I have the scripts of the original and the Tony-winning revival. I have an audio tape of the Joel Grey revival (I guess recorded through the theater's sound system). And I have the movie on DVD.

I've just been having the most fascinating viewing experience.  I got a DVD from Germany entitled Tottel Im Weltall.  What that is is the German DVD of The Creature Wasn't Nice aka Spaceship aka Naked Space.  Now, this DVD, unlike the public domain copies available on eBay and elsewhere, is taken from my pristine 35mm print.  This is the third version of the German DVD - I don't have the first two, but they were both full-frame and therefore ridiculous.  I'm happy to say that this new DVD from Kinowelt is the first time on video that the film has ever been in its proper (well, almost proper) ratio: It's about 1:78 (should be 1:85, but it's a minor quibble).  And even though the DVD isn't enhanced for widescreen TVs, the quality is immediately 500% better than the PD DVDs.   It's really sharp, the color is outstanding, and the film is properly framed so you don't have ridiculous head room and you can't see off the bottom of the set in certain shots.  So, if I decide to put a DVD out on Kritzerland (which I'm very certain I shall), I'll use this as the master (my print is still in Germany - they had the right to store it for five years and the five years isn't quite up yet).  I believe I'd be able to enhance this DVD for widescreen without too much trouble.  That means the only thing I'd really have to transfer is the director's cut of the film, which only exists on 3/4" tape.  So, this all becomes very doable now.

The best thing is (aside from seeing the film look better than it ever has on video - printed correctly and not brightened, great color, correct framing), is that the DVD has a German dub.  Now, to create this dub they had to do everything from scratch as I did not have the music and effects tracks.  I did provide them with a cutting continuity script.  So, they redid the entire musical score for synth (the songs remain in English) - some of the rescoring is better actually despite the cheesy synth.  They kept most of Mr. Spear's underscore, but changed some cues for the better.  And the German actors are great - very close to Gerritt Graham's voice, Cindy's voice is cute, mine is deeper but fun, and MacNee's voice is a good match.

I had a MEDIUM afternoon meaning I watched three episodes of MEDIUM from the DVD set. I hadn't planned on watching MEDIUM today, but I forgot that I had cued it up last night to play today, so I just left it in and watched these this afternoon.

Among the episodes was one with Allison's mother-in-law coming to visit and looking like she wanted to move in with the family. She was played by Cathy Baker, and it was a wonderful episode. I only vaguely recalled it from last season.

Another MEDIUM episode guest starred Chad Lowe as a pilot accused of killing his wife. Allison sees that at some point in the future, the man is going to save a plane going down with his expertise, so her dilemma becomes keeping what she finds out to herself so he can be out of prison and able to save all those passengers or revealing what she knows about his guilt and thus dooming that plane-load of passengers who will perish without his knowledge of flying. Intriguing conundrum for Allison, but this is one time they couldn't make the ending leave the viewer feeling completely free from dread.

What a great story!

More fun upcoming DVD releases!

"Universal Screen Legends!

Three “Screen Legends Collections” are coming from Universal on Nov. 14, one each for Bing Crosby, Cary Grant, and Rock Hudson. Titles include:

Bing: Waikiki Wedding (1937, with Bob Burns and Martha Raye); Double or Nothing (1937, with Miss Raye again), East Side of Heaven (1939, with Joan Blondell), If I Had My Way (1940, with Gloria Jean and El Brendel) and Here Come the Waves (1944, with Betty Hutton). If you’re wondering what Gloria Jean was doing in a Paramount Picture, well… good catch. But Der Bingle actually was loaned to Universal for that film (and for East Side of Heaven, too).

Cary: Thirty Day Princess (1934, with Sylvia Sidney), Kiss and Make Up (1934, with Helen Mack), Wings in the Dark (1935, with Myrna Loy), Big Brown Eyes (1936, with Joan Bennett), and Wedding Present (1936, with Miss Bennett)

Rock: Douglas Sirk’s Has Anybody Seen My Gal? (1952, with Piper Laurie), Nathan Juran’s The Golden Blade (1953, with Miss Laurie), A Very Special Favor (1965, with Leslie Caron), Robert Aldrich’s The Last Sunset (1961, with Kirk Douglas) and The Spiral Road (1962, with Burl Ives).

Well, this is frightening!  Five o'clock and no one in the jernt.

I had to leave quite unexpectedly!  My sister and niece are in Seattle to see a Seattle Storm basketball game and Larry, my sister's boyfriend was at her house mowing (he's retired...he has the time ;)).  Anyway, he called in an absolute panic, saying that my niece's two brand new (8-week old or so...she's only had them for a couple of weeks) kittens had gotten out of the house and he couldn't find them ANYWHERE!!  He said that he noticed them gone around 3:00 when he called me at about 5:15.  I rushed over to help look for them.  We put food outside and looked around the outside of the house and down the street a bit.  Nothing!  We even looked in the garage (that had been closed) and in the downstairs of the house, again.

Then, just to be sure, I went upstairs to look around, by myself.  I went into my niece's room, then the extra bedroom, the upstairs bathroom, and then my sister's room.  I looked in her bathroom and then under her bed.  When I got down to look under the bed, the kittens came around from wherever they had been sleeping!!  The never left the house...they were just very well hidden!  I picked up both of them (they're still fairly small) and walked downstairs and into the kitchen.  Larry was SOOOO relieved!  He called my sister and told them that I found the kittens and all is well.  Now I'm back at work and that's why I wasn't in the jernt. ;D

Kudos to our DR Jose for an excellent job on DEAR EDWINA!!  The show is absolutely adorable, and the book and lyrics of Marcy Heisler and music of Zina Goldrich are catchy and contribute enormously to the charm of the show.  Our DR Jose looked splendid as Edwina's brother Myron Spoonapple and sparkled at the keyboard as part of the garage community theatre band.  I had a wonderful time.

Afterwards, I met the writers, two immensely talented amd charming ladies, saw my friend Jen Bender who directed the piece, and took our talented MD to dinner.  All in all, a most enjoyable way to spend an evening.

I went down to meet TPunk at the Time Warner Center, and she did some shopping, and as we were leaving the mall, who was coming up the escalator as we were going down?

Malan, the designer booted off in week 2 of PROJECT RUNWAY. By himself, but on the cellphone, and I had just said, "Hey, there's Malan" quietly (I thought) to TPunk, and he looked over with a smile, and we gave him a little wave. So that was funny.

A few minutes later as we walked up Broadway, we saw Mark Linn-Baker. So that was funny too.

I too was surprised with the female elimination. I think when someone does badly, people will rally around that person, and someone who people EXPECT is getting votes can get burned. I thought Natalie was toast, but I do agree that it is basically splitting hairs at this point. Now that Ryan is gone, any of the rest are top-of-the-line. Next, I watched a PRIVATE SCREENINGS interview between Robert Osborne and Mickey Rooney. Mickey didn't always answer the questions that had been asked, and Robert seemed a bit intimidated in not following up with him when answers weren't forthcoming.

For example, they started mentioning his favorite directors and he mentioned Clarence Brown. Osborne mentioned he wasn't as remembered as some other directors of the period, and Mickey mistakenly said he directed NINOTCHKA (which Osborne didn't correct) along with NATIONAL VELVET. But they never continued with the topic of the many famous directors Mickey worked with. (Busby Berkeley had been mentioned earlier in which Mickey said he was the finest director of musicals who ever lived and he said if Judy was still alive, she'd say so too. Hardly. Everything I've ever read discussed how much she disliked working with him.)

In all, a frustrating interview even though it was filled with clips from Mickey's movies including lots of early movies that don't get shown much.

MONK had some funny moments tonight, but in order to stage some scenes, logic was thrown out the window and contrivance was the order of the day. (We see dozens of construction workers at a busy site, but as soon as Monk becomes a target and tries to get away (he can't see), the other workers conveniently disappear so he can be at the mercy of the killer.

Still, I enjoyed the episode.

Sandra!
Great pix and stories of boating mayhem the other day.

And there will be more pictures once my cousin Dona emails some to me. She was the only one who thought to bring a camera to the Daring Rescue. In the meantime, here's a picture of the Chinese restaurant where we ate dinner after the reunion in Wichita. On the far right, you can see our car. This was not long before it broke down.

Maybe I'm mispronouncing Malan though - but I am the one who couldn't pronounce Lance Bass the other day.  Or Reichen for that matter.

I was trying to take a picture of my cousin Mikalah and her "system" for playing Scum. She spreads her cards out randomly in non-matching pairs on the table in front of her and has absolutely no clue what cards she has. Just as I pressed the button to take the picture, my five-year-old cousin Gracie stuck her face in front of the camera.

HERE is Mikalah's system. This was after she'd played most of her cards. At the beginning of the game, her cards were all over the place.

Also, I watched part of a 50s movie today called THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH, I think that was the title. I wondered if you had seen this one. The Martians look like people, they concentrate really hard and turn you into a pile of ash, then they become a replica of you. It was on Fox today. A cheapie.

I have seen this movie and last year I interviewed the director Maury Dexter.

MBarnum, did you ever watch that El Brendel movie you have recorded called JUST IMAGINE?

I did watch it. It didn't hold my interest as well as I had hoped, and I can't recall if I saw the whole thing...but I know I at least saw most of it.

What did Maury Dexter have to say? It seemed like one of those low-budget movies where they somehow had one good location to shoot at (a big mansion and its grounds), and so they make the most of that one location.

Back on Sunday after a visit with DR Jane and DH Keith!

Then, after the reunion, our branch of the family went to Wichita to live it up. We went bowling, which is always an adventure if you do it right. I took a picture of my bowling score on the little screen thing at the end of the game. How exciting is that?

You know, I don't remember what he said about that movie. I really need to transcribe his audio interview one of these days...it was a 3 hour interview!! That is a LOT of transcribing!

I'll start:  My sister-in-law (that's SIL in internet lingo) talks and talks AND TALKS!!!  Everyone she runs into she talks to. One of the running gags (that she doesn't know we laugh about) is how she introduces the family to EVERYONE.

Six years ago, we were in Wichita after the reunion and somebody decided to get Chinese food. So we found this place called Lee's (the marquee then said, "Good to eat at this place" or something like that) and Aunt Carol got into her routine with the lady who seated us.

"This is my brother and he lives in Arizona with his wife and two kids. We grew up in Chicago, but our parents were from Oklahoma. Well, our mother is from Oklahoma. Our father is from Alabama. Now our brother and his wife..."

The waitress smiled and nodded. Like me in Spanish class. A waiter and some other people eating in the restaurant got the same routine.

The napkins were folded all pretty on the tables. Like this:

I suppose it is lucky Lee's probably doesn't have bathroom attendants. Or they would have to hear the whole intro as well.

Post by: Sandra on July 28, 2006, 10:11:09 PM
So the lady taught me and some of my cousins how to fold them like that. Then Carol went on with her... whatever it was.

Two years later, we went back to Lee's and the entire staff got the whole story all over again. I don't remember how it came up, but somebody told the lady that I could still fold the napkins like she taught me. Plus I showed her another one I learned out of a magazine. She was impressed.

We went back two years later. Aunt Carol started her routine while the waiter was taking our drink orders. He knew what was coming and backed away, waving his arms, and saying, "No, no, no!" He had remembered us.

They remembered us this time too. We left the waiter a big tip.

There is a similar story involving Aunt Carol, the rest of the family, and a pizza place somewhere in Wichita. The waitress there knows all about us.

Back from a lovelier than lovely evening.  We thought we weren't going to have more than sixty people tonight, but we had a LOT of traffic at the door and we ended up completely selling out and having to add two tables.  Go know.  The show was a little too loose for my taste, but the audience ate it up.  Lighting was much better this evening, and sound, too, aside from some blend problems having to do with close three part harmonies.

Happily, there is no "so far" because two of next week's three shows are completely sold out as of now, and the third is getting close.  So, I'd say we're officially a success.

Oh...I almost forgot the Topic of the Day:

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's episodes of "Kyle XY" and "Psych."  I taped last week's episodes and haven't watched those, so I figure that I should watch those before I watch tonight's.  I don't know if I need to, but I'm going to anyway.

In my DVD player:  three movies from Netflix.  I've had two of them for several weeks and I just got another earlier this week.  Netflix is definitely making money off of me. ;)

In my CD player:  a CD from DR Ben and another CD (which was totally unexpected) from DR Elmore!  Thank you both!! :-*
