Well, you've read the notes, you've played your cross-hand piece, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing their cow-hand piece.

I've been perusing The Smoking Gun (http://www.thesmokinggun.com) and just happened to come across an article in the archives about people who wrote to the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL) complaining about personal license plates that they've seen.  Click HERE (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/washplates1.html) for the specific article.  It's pretty darned funny!

Megan was very pleased with her new chapeau.  It was made of cat leather, and it's design was highlighted by a lovely FROUNCE where there was ONCE FUR.  Megan couldn't understand why P.E.T.A. had her on their death list.

A FROUNCE, or French Ounce, is roughly 30 milliliters.  The French decided long ago not to use the English system of measurements because it is, after all, English and therefor something to sneer at.

As DRELMORE writes, it seems as if DRJOSE's show was a grand success.

How wonderful.  AND the cabaret series was soldout!  Hurray!  That means there will be another one next year.  AND DRCILLALIZ will be seeing the show tonight, so we can have another review of said entertainment and pictures of the meeting with MR BK.

Good morning, all!  I've off to the movies today with my college friend Matthew after seeing Mr Robert Kimball, a trip to Toyland, and several errands.

Dear Friend BK, I'm happy to hear the cabaret series is doing so well.  Perhaps next year the reclusive Guy Haines might be persuaded to present a couple of evenings.

DR Jose, I wish you all well for today's performance.  Tell Jenn I'm sorry I didn't get to spend more time with her.

DR Jane and Keith, a visit with DR MBarnum?  Did you lose a bet?  Is it true he isn't staying with you because you have no fire escape?

The only really flop musicals I love, off the bat, are MACK AND MABEL, DEAR WORLD, and ANYONE CAN WHISTLE,

Good morning!

I slept past 9 a.m. this morning (which happens less and less as I get older and older), and I was surprised when I went out to get the newspaper that it wasn't hot, stuffy, and unbearable. It may get that way in a little bit, but so far, it's a decent July morning.

We haven't gotten any rain though scattered thundershowers have been and continue to be in the forecast.

TOD:

I've never seen it on stage, but I adore MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG's score. From all reports, the physical production of the original show was horrendous. Knowing the story as well as I do now, I wonder if seeing it staged would pose any problems now. The London productions, the off-Broadway revival, and the production in Washington seem to have gotten mixed reviews still on the content even while the score is still praised.

I really enjoyed that revival of THE WOMEN in 1974 (with Dorothy Loudon and Alexis Smith among many other stars), but it definitely flopped and I'm thinking its reviews weren't very good either.

Can someone who has the DVD of VIVA LAS VEGAS confirm for me that it wasn't enhanced for widescreen TVs. I can burn my own DVD-R from the TCM broadcast if that's the case, but if the DVD is enhanced, it would probably look better than a self-produced DVD-R.

Thanks in advance.

INHD1 showed a high definition version of THE OMEN (the original) last night, and I recorded it and hope to watch it at some point today. I didn't spring for the most recent DVD release (have had the letterboxed laserdisc for many years), but I'll be anxious to see what an older film like this looks like upconverted to HD.

The idea of today's topic is flop plays and musicals you've actually seen where you loved the show that was roundly panned by critics and other audience members.  For me, play would be Peter Barnes' Time Of The Barracudas.

TOD - my my my (that's 3 my's) being an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, where do I start??  LOL

I have convinced DP Eric that seeing new shows, as panned as they are, is a great things to do and how we love bad theatre as much as good theatre.  In the past few years, SF has preimeired a few new shows, the one I really enjoyed was The Mambo Kings it had a horrid book, but the music was a lot of fun.  Lennon was just boring as all hell with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.  I still hit myself to this day for not having seen Lestat when it previewed in SF.    When Martin Guerre played the Ahmanson in LA, I took a special trip down to see it.  The first act was really good, the second act fell on it's face within 5 minutes.  I do love the score, though.

I was thrilled by the Broadway play FRANKENSTEIN in previews and was shocked by its closing after one night.

I guess BIG doesn't count for the TOD since it did get a good NY Times review, although it clearly flopped commercially.

My most "embarrassing" guilty pleasure has to be BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE GOES PUBLIC, which I saw once in previews and again on opening night; the daily NY Times critic was vicious, but the Sunday NY Times critic (back when they did that Sunday review thing in the NY Times) was quite positive.  I had a great time, even if it crossed the boudnaries of good atste from time to time.

Off-Broadway, I'd say DESSA ROSE is a real personal favorite that the critics somehow didn't take to.

Also, VIOLET did not get a good NY Times review, but I love it.

According to the flight pattern they show on the airline's website, Skip is now officially three hours earlier.  So if he ever says duirng this trip, "that's three hours of my life I'll never get back," I'll remind him.

There's some sort of logic there, I just can't explain it.

I saw the pre-Broadway tour of J&H when it played in Seattle and I thought that it was quite good (SPOILER:  the scene where Lucy was killed was just riveting!!).  They made some changes to the show by the time it was videotaped so that what I saw on the video was a giant stinking pile of poop...just my opinion, of course. ;)

The only show that I've seen (on Broadway in December, 1995) that didn't do well was certainly loved by the audience that was there...Swinging On a Star:  The Johnny Burke Musical.  I don't know what the reviews were like but I LOVED this!  It just didn't last very long.  The CD hadn't even been released, yet.  Here's the CD cover:

Yes, it was fun. I had folks in on Thursday to see PETER PAN on video and some other things also got watched, and I just didn't have time to do the cleaning that day before they arrived. (They got here a little after 5, and it is usually around 6-6:30 when I clean my room of the day. So, everything dropped back a day.)

The musicals I've seen in NYC that got bad reviews and flopped I generally didn't like at all (I HAD A BALL, HIGH SOCIETY, JECKYLL & HYDE).

Oh, I just thought of one I did like - THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (the original, not the revised version).

Since I watched the Mary Martin PETER PAN earlier this week, I thought I'd give Cathy Rigby equal time today. Didn't like the lip-synching. I'm assuming that she lip-synched in the theater, too, during regular performances not for TV cameras since she does such amazing tumbling routines during "I Gotta Crow" and "I'm Flying," and being able to sing would be next to impossible doing what she was doing. Impressive to watch, but it detracts a bit from the excitement of live theater, at least for me it does. I'm sure most in the audience didn't care at all.

My favourite flop musical is "Merrily". I love it in its original format. I don't think the revisals work as well.
I saw it performed by a young cast of non-professionals and found it to be totally satisfying as a piece of musical theatre.

When Martin Guerre played the Ahmanson in LA, I took a special trip down to see it.  The first act was really good, the second act fell on it's face within 5 minutes.

Please! such exageration - we saw it in LA as well, and the second act did not fall flat with 5 minutes! (6, minutes, Yes!)

As for the Topic of the Day:

Ones I've seen and loved:

Merrily We Roll Along - I did not see the original Broadway production, but I did a professional production of the original version/script.  I laughed, I cried... I cried some more.  ;-)

Chess - I loved the trio of leads: David Carroll, Judy Kuhn, and Philip Casnoff.  And that car chase in the parking garage was very cool.

Big - ...And I have to state that I did not like the subsequent revised tour version of the show.  At all!

And since it's considered a flop in some circles:  Passion.  *I saw it five times, including Opening and Closing Night.

Flops I've seen but did not like:

Shogun - "Hey, I have an idea!  Let's combine all the best elements from Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and Chess and set the story in Japan..."  The first time I honestly felt embarrassed for the actors on stage.

Martin Guerre - Some nice moments scattered amongst a lot of filler.  -And, please, a villain should not have a bad wig and a lisp.

In My Life - Well, I liked it... But for all the wrong reasons.  ;)

Flops I'm still undecided on:

Lestat

:-\

;)

So...  As I was about to fall asleep last night, my cell phone rang... A call from California... What?  Who?  I answer it... Turned out to be my youngest brother, Jay.  He and his girlfriend came into the city last night for a friend's party, and were about to head to Chinatown for some late-night dim-sum.  Well, since it was almost 2:00am by the time he called, and I had a matinee to rest up for we decided to meet up for lunch today.  Which we did.

We met down at Union Square, then walked over to 6th Ave, and settled in French Roast for brunch.  The four of us - we were joined by another one of Jay's friends - all had good meals, although we seemed to notice a couple of tables around us sending plates of food back to the kitchen.  Hmm.. In any case, brunch was good, and they were serving a totally refreshing three-berry (strawberry, blueberry and raspberry) lemonade with crushed mint  Perfect for a hot summer day.

We had a good visit, and after brunch, we walked over to the theatre.  I wasn't able to get my brother and his friends in - we were sold out - but he also had to get ready to head to Philly earlier tonight too.  So, I pointed them in the direction of Bleecker street - the girls wanted to go shopping, and I headed in for the final show...

Der Brucer and I both enjoyed Kat and the Kings.  The critics in NYC didn't get it, the audiences didn't show up, too bad.

I had a great time at that show.  It was one of the first shows that I saw after moving here and was disappointed that it didn't do well.

Our final performance of Dear Edwina went very well, and we had a whole lot of younger audience members in attendance today too.  And a couple of those younger audience members were the songs and daughters of cast members.  -And I have to say, there were some truly cute kids!

Since most everyone had friends in today to see the show - and since we also had to strike the show as soon as the show ended - we had no closing night "party".  However, it's looking like there may be a party/cookout being held next weekend.

It really was a wonderful week.  Whew! It all just went by in a week?!?!?!?  And, hopefully, this will not be the last time that all of us are working together.

Regarding Jekyll and Hyde, my least favorite broadway show ever.  I went to see it with some friends on a whim when it starred Jack Wagner.  Because really, how could you not go see Frisco on Broadway?  We were hoping that maybe he would break into All I Need, but no such luck.  The show was not even enjoyable from a bad show perspective.  That was $20 (rush tickets) and 3 hours of my life that I will never have back.  My friend's boyfriend spent the entire second act with his head resting back on the seat starring at the ceiling because he could not bear to look at the stage.  It wasn't just that Jack Wagner was not vocally up to the role, but the staging and story, even some of the lighting were awful. Just my opinion of course.

Flop that I liked, Dance of the Vampires.  That was enjoyable from a bad show perspective.

Matthew and I ended up at ANOTHER GAY MOVIE, which was thoroughly offensive and outrageously funny, borrowing (???) the blueprint of AMERICAN PIE for its format.  Some of the cast were excellent farceurs, several were gay celebrities including a good, mostly nude, performance from the bachelor James on BOY MEETS BOY, who seems to have used the reality show for a springboard to performance.

The movie wasn't as funny as I had hoped, but it wasn't a dog I had feared it might turn out to be.  The four young leads were used and abused in sundry humiliating ways, and there were some truly funny moments, one featuring gay porn actor Matthew Rush as a circuit party boy, as well as a lot of nudity.  I've seen more, much much more, of Richard Hatch now than I ever want to see again.

MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (saw the fourth preview and it was better by closing night, which I caught, but it was god-awful)
DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER

CAN-CAN revival of 1981
TEDDY AND ALICE

Just had a long chat with my muse Margaret re the new tome.  Very similar reaction to one of my short stories.  She LOVES the idea of the book, but doesn't like the tone of it.  As she explained and I probed I began to see what she was talking about, and I began to see that she was, as usual, quite correct in her comments.  As I've said, getting the tone and style right is very difficult at times - I went a certain way, especially in chapter one, and I can see now it isn't the right way.  Part of that has to do with the fact that the book started out as one thing and morphed into another.  She did like random scenes and some of the dialogue.  So, I'm going back to chapter one and completely redoing it, then if I get that right, it will be fairly easy to adjust from there, because she likes the plot and she likes a device I use.  The big work is chapter one, the set up to everything.  I'm also changing what the protagonist wants to do with her life - that will really help, because I was already bored of what I chose.  I came up with the new thing and it will work much better, not only for her, but for those around her.

It's wonderful to have a muse who "gets" what you do and who can help bring things into focus, especially at this early stage.  So, before I continue on (I'm to page thirty-five now), I'll be rewriting and adjusting the first thirty pages.

Shortly I shall be on my way to LACC for this evening's performance and my meeting Cillaliz.

I watched three very different videos tonight. I began with QUEER DUCK - THE MOVIE.

If you've ever seen the little five minute shorts on Showtime, this was done exactly the same way except widescreen and Dolby Digital sound. I can't say that I laughed from beginning to end (only about 70 minutes), but there were definitely some targets hit with bull's eyes, and some of the songs were funny (an H.M.S. PINAFORE song was very funny.)

Next up was THE SIELNCE OF THE LAMBS. I haven't watched this in years, and I was interested to see how my Criterion DVD (a non-anamorphic transfer) looked on my TV.

Not terrible but not the greatest either. I know the most recent MGM release was enhanced for widescreen TVs, but things have read suggested the colors were desaturated a might on the MGM transfer, so I've never bought it. For as seldom as I watch it, the Criterion is probably as good as I need. I'm also guessing the film will be one of MGM's earliest Blu-Ray HD discs once they start combing through their holdings and deciding what to convert to high definition. (THE TERMINATOR has already gotten the HD treatment from them. This one should make it within a year, I'd say.)

And I finished off the evening with the 1968 OLIVER! This is another film I haven't watched in many years. The transfer is fine but could possibly be bettered by more recent advances in remastering films for DVD transfers.

I'd certainly consider buying an updated version of this if it could be made a bit sharper.

I just watched the BBC television adaptation of Thomas Hardy's UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE, which was quite a delight:  wonderful performances, beautiful scenery and costumes, and an excellent score of folk carols and hymns.  I highly recommend it to all those who think Hardy only wrote angst-ridden dramas on English countrylife in the 19th Century.  This dramatization is quite romantic, with a lot of humor ad a happy ending.

Under the greenwood tree, who loves to lie with me?
And turn his merry note unto the sweet bird's throat
Come hither, come hither, come hither
Here shall he see no enemy
But winter and rough weather

Who doth ambition shun, and love to lie in the sun
Seeking the food he eats, and pleased with what he gets
Come hither, come hither, come hither
Here shall he see no enemy
But winter and rough weather

If it shall come to pass that any man turn ass
Leaving his wealth and eases, a stubborn will to please
Ducdame, ducdame, ducdame
Here shall he see gross fools as he
And if he will come to me

Everything I look at, I want to keep...or I think I'll go through it more thoroughly at a later date.  So, if I could actually go through the stuff and rebox it more efficiantly, I could cut down the number of boxes that I have without really getting rid of stuff...at least, that's the plan (for now).

My friend Margo said that she'd come over and help me "clean up," but I think I could use her help in reboxing the stuff.  Maybe she can help me make the ultimate decisions. ;)
