Title: TRIPLE PLAY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were filled with interesting factoids and ephemera, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're playing cowball and just had a triple play of their own.

Herbie, the beggar, tried what he thought was his BEST TO OBTEST the passers-by for money, but too many people were turned off when he called them "Snookie-ookums."

I had a similar hairs/neck moment early in Ragtime, during the trio "Goodbye, My Love/Journey On," sung by Mother, Father and Tateh.

Morning all on this first day of the kids going back to school!

I don't know if you all get the commercial from Staples where the faher is pushing the shopping cart and the voice over says "Their going  BACK!". The kids follow the cart wth mad/sad face while the background music is "The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" or whatever it's called.

They do it every year but that never fails to crack me up. :)

TOD:

The biggest of those moments for me was when I first heard and saw Sandy Duncan do the flying number in the revival of PETER PAN.

I have a few faves from shows that didn't do so well.  One was "Cross the Line" from BIG, which number alone may have been responsible for my going back to the show several times.  And another is the career-wrap-up number from CHITA RIVERA:  A DANCER'S LIFE, which was that show's eleven o'clock number.

The aforementioned are of course the number sthat filled me with joy.  In terms of numbers that i found powerful, there are so many.  But I guess that's a diffreent question?

Good morning, all!  I'm about ready to begin my trek to the hospital ICU.  Today's work for the hospital cafeteria will be the beginning of three charts - undetermined which I'll start first - for Klea Blackhurst.  Yesterday, I proofed the "Harlequinade" from Victor Herbert's THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

I'm not sure at present how my dad is progressing.  He was allowed soft food yesterday, and he had beef broth and jello for lunch.  He turned down his dinner, although the nurses assured me they would bring him something later in the evening.  I'm afraid they'll be inserting more tubes today, which leave his throat quite sore, and he'll be going back to an IV feeding.  Besides his sore throat, he's lost nearly all intelligence in his speech.  I don't know if it's the sore throat, a weakness to articulaye clearly, or - God forbid - a small stroke, but I'm lucky this week if I understand 50% of what he's saying.  I'm sure my response is as frustrating to him and his diction is to me.

On the positive side, he definitely looked better yesterday.  He had some color and energy.  I'll have more to report later.

This morning my sister-in-law Jo Ann and I want to ask the doctor about Lady Macbeth's radiation burns.

DR Jose, bon voyage, dear friend!  You will be missed.

DR FJL, I'm sorry to travel plans hhave changed.  I hope your friend is doing better.

TOD:
I would agree with DR CharlesPogue:  the finale of "1776."  I was so moved, I didn't want to leave the 46th Street Theatre.

I'm still trying to see if it's feasible to just fly out to Seattle on Friday, see the final rehearsal and the presentation on Friday night, and come back early on Saturday.  It's probable that my wanting to be around in NYC during a key period of my friend's anticipated improvement is more for me than for my friend's family.  He has a very loyal support group.

Not sure if this counts, but....
Act One Finale from Dreamgirls (And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going)
Act Two Finale from The Wiz (Home)

I had the opportunity to see the roles' originators, respectively, Jennifer Holliday & Stephanie Mills

I am sure their are others. I willtry to remember during the day or someone else will mention one that I like.

I think Lucille Ball's casting as Mrs Iselin in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE would have been an Oscar nomination.  Coming off the cheapjack FACTS OF LIFE and before THE LUCY SHOW - she certainly could have had a BIG impact, and it would have given her a chance to have more of a movie career than the television series she went on with.

And what a shocker!  If she had turned around and said "Why don't you pass the time by playing a little solataire?" and later kissed her son - whew!
Title: Re:TRIPLE PLAY
Post by: Jrand73 on August 03, 2006, 06:28:34 AM
Of course nowadays some if not MOST young reviewers refer to Angela as playing "Eleanor Iselin" although in the BOOK and the original film version the character has NO first name and is referred to as Mrs Iselin or Raymond's mother.

It is evil hot here again today. It's supposed to be better tomorrow. We shall see. It's that kind of hot with a wind where you feel your face is being melted off of your skeleton. I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would rather have Minnesota cold anytime than a week of this weather. If we ever leave New York to retire someplace else, it ain't gonna be Arizona (Sorry Laura and Kerry) and it ain't gonna be Floriday (sorry Michael and Danise) or anyplace else that gets hot.

Someone in a Tree from Pacific Overtures. I saw two productions of the show (not the original, I was 21 and still living in Minnesota when the original opened on Broadway) and even though the Roundabout production was not "great" that number still gives me chills. I think (as I've said many times) it is one of the most brilliant numbers in all musical theatre.

I was completely enraptured at the end of "Who's That Woman" in the original FOLLIES.

"We'll Take a Glass Together" from GRAND HOTEL was even more astonishing in person than it was on the Tony Awards.

So much of A CHORUS LINE had me tingling. Probably my favorite moment was at the end of the lengthy "Goodbye Twelve . . . . Hello, Love" montage.

Since I plan to stay inside all day, I will have a wealth of video offerings to watch. I will have to finish ORCHESTRA WIVES which I started last night. I could put my hands on BILLY ELLIOT yesterday (wasn't where I thought it would be), but I finally located it this morning. Probably will save it for the weekend and go with THE DETECTIVE today.

And there are two GREY'S ANATOMY reruns tonight (neither of which I will have seen) which should make for some great viewing.

I do not know how you all can take that heat day after day after day...here in Salem, Oregon, USA we are quite thankful that we only get a few days of the really hot heat...normally most of our summer is mild (in the low to mid 80s or so). That week of low 100s that we had was horrible and I am glad it is over.

I have decided to ask my nephew to go to New York with me in October. He's 22 or 23 and at that point where he thinks he should know what he's going to do with the rest of his life, but he doesn't. (Reminds me of my last weeks in law school when I went to one of my professors and cried "But I don't want to be a lawyer!!!")

Anyway, I'm going to give him my free plane ticket (it is transferrable) and he can share my little hotel room.  I just got off the phone with my sister and she thinks it's a fabulous idea.

I know he will fit in with the HHW gang quite well.   I'll see him tomorrow and perhaps I can introduce him to the site.

Apparently Callie stayed by the door the whole time I was gone.   Thanks for listening to the trials and tribulations.  I wasn't sure we'd ever get this far...of course I haven't been home to check on them, so I don't know if we're all the way there yet, but I think we are.

PROJECT RUNWAY SPOILER

SPOILER

I wasn't a bit surprised at last night's surprise ouster of a player for breaking the rules.  Of course, it wasn't what I expected.  I thought he'd be told to leave because of the scandal involving his portfolio (i.e., having cribbed some designs from other design lines and calling them his own).  No...he gets ousted because he has (GASP!) "pattern books" in his room!

I guess that's tantamount to cheating (using an open book when it's not an open book test).

Kayne thought it was awful.  Just horrible. Tsk.

And Kayne turned Keith in.

And when Keith took it like a man, and apologized to his fellow competitors, what did Kayne do?

He pissily told Keith "You have only yourself to blame."

That's a deflection from his part in blowing the whistle.  I'm certain he was simply assuaging his own guilt -- but it was bad form and ungracious when Keith was so openly honest and apologetic.

I was a fan of Kayne's until last night.

Thursday greetings!  Glad to hear that the cool wave is on its way.  I just walked over to the nearby bagel place, where I intended to sit and eat my lunch and read my book.  When I saw how fast the rain clouds were moving in, I decided to get back here to my desk before the storm.  Of course, the peril of lunching at my desk is phone calls - of which I've now answered 2 while trying to eat my tuna on sourdough toast.

Don't know if it will happen or if it's just rumor but a neighbor who works in the area and lives in our building just called Anthony to say that a Con- Edison worker told her that a partial Con-Ed induced blackout will happen sometime this afternoon. It won't be city-wide but it's apparently just going to happen in some high use areas. Some office buildings in my neighborhood are on a self-imposed energy saving scheme, shutting down a couple of elevators, turning out lights, etc. but apparently it's not enough. If it does happen I hope they tell people. Shutting off the power with no warning will fry many, many computers in the area and Con-Ed is already the new utility you love to hate (although no business  can ever replace Time-Warner Cable of New York City as my most hated and evil utility in existence  ;)).

PROJECT RUNWAY SPOILER

SPOILER

I was a fan of Kayne's until last night.

MORE SPOILERS

Are you now a non-fan because he ratted him out, or because of how he responded when Keith apologized?  He seemed to be the only one who acknowledge the situation.  Some of the other guys didn't even look at him.

I'm still a Kayne fan.  I didn't see Keith's exit as graceful, he seemed really shaken and strung out.  Also, I was surprised by how he got kicked off, and by the number of rules that he broke.  And his "discount" at the fabric store earlier on the episode reminded me a lot of Kara Saun's shoe trick in the finale of the first season.  Not a fair and equal playing ground with the rest of the competitors.  Not cool.  Also he was kind of a jerk, but maybe that's in the editing.  Or maybe he's a jerk.  Oh yeah, and I also didn't like his closing speech where he said that he had the book but he never got an advantage from it.  How can he or we ever know that?  Why did he bring it in the first place?  Why is this so compelling to me? :)

My boss and I checked out a new Indian restaurant on the east side of town called STAR OF INDIA....$6.95 lunch buffet all you can eat! It was delicious and we both stuffed ourselves...but the best part was what I discovered next door to the restaurant...a little store owned by the STAR OF INDIA'S owner which sold some groceries and had a wall of CDs and DVDs! Woohoo! I bought two CDs and had a long talk with the owner, Maleq, about vintage Bollywood films (he is a big fan!)...he knew all the new and old actors and was quite impressed with my knowledge of Indian cinema...and astonished that I had more DVDs at home then he had in his whole store! LOL!

I reported my discovery to my co-workers who seemed somewhat terrified of the fact that I now had a place locally to buy Bollywood soundtracks.  ???

My morning visit to ICU is over, and my dad is doing better.  Today he was quite loquacious, even if we still understood half of what he said.  The oncologist checked his sore throat for thrush and said it was clear, but he did order a blood transfusion.  The room is no longer quarantined so that means no masks, rubber gloves and robes.  The doctor also sent in physical therapists to get him up and moving again.  When the therapists arrived, I cleared out.

We are expecting a storm this afternoon, possibly hail, so I will stay in for a bit.  If it all passes over, I'll head back to see him later.

I caught PROJECT RUNWAY as well last night.  I agree with Kayne about the situation.  Keith can apologize all he wants to but he broke the rules and may have unjustifiably won his earlier win.  He deserved whatever happened.  I can't believe, if he were illegally using a pattern book, that he'd be so dumb to leave it in public view.

Did any of the usual gang see SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE last night?

(discussion about last night's show)

.
.
.

I'm pleased that they praised Heidi so much. I really like her and she is by far my favorite of the girls left.  I definitely think she will stay. But between donyelle and natalie it is a toss-up.  I think donyelle has lasted this long because of her parternship with fan-favorite benji. BUt i thought she was flat last night. And didn't have her old spark. She got criticized as did natalie. But i think donyelle is more popular.

I think for the guys benji will stay. And travis got praised so much last night, i can't imagine he is going anywhere.  These are my two favorite guys. I think it is clear that ivan is leaving. Although the fans obviously like him. I will be interested to see who is bottom two with him.

I really like watching heidi and travis. Really nice pair. I guess next week she will be back with benji.

Tuesday night was a long one. It was the last night my sister's little niece and nephew were visiting (month long visit).  Anyhow there was a terrible storm and the lights went out.

It is interesting to see how otherwise strong kids (who act grown up) can turn into babies when the lights go out. It was cute, since they had their friends over. They hadn't been as clingy to me all night. But once the power went out, i had 3 kids wanting to hold my hand, and a scared little baby (my 10month old niece).

The little boy just turned 6, and there was another little girl who was 6, and they were pretty scared.  The wind was blowing so hard outside and there was lightning.  Luckily my sister was home sick and hadn't gone out with all the adults. So she was able to get the candles and flashlights.

Poor little baby megan had been on her changing table right before bed when the power outage occured.

They were very happy when the power returned an hour later!

FJL, that's a possibility. It depends on lots of ifs but you could lose files if you're on and there is a sudden power outage. A quick flicker probably won't do much harm but a sudden loss of power means you may lose the file on which you are working.

Had a very full afternoon with completely varied media. I started off by finishing the Katharine Hepburn book by Scott Berg. Though it is a biography with a more than cursory glance at her career, my favorite portions were about her everyday life both at her Turtle Bay townhouse in NYC and at Fenwick. Really captivaing reading. I can't remember a book I've finished so quickly.

Next up is a behind-the-scenes take on the world of firgure skating.

In honor of Kate, I put in the laserdisc of the remake of LOVE AFFAIR with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. Kate's part is only eleven minutes long playing Aunt Ginny, so I skipped directly to her scenes and watched them. Reading her reaction to the script in the book, it was clear now that she didn't truly understand what some of the speeches she was making meant. Also caught her reading off cue cards a couple of times.

Ben - If computers are on and there's a blackout, does that mean files will be lost, he asks naively.

I'm not Ben, but if you haven't saved your file and the power goes off you lose all the changes you made.  If it's a laptop or you have a battery back-up on your computer you'll be ok, but make sure you save often

And I finished my afternoon with the documentary CLEOPATRA: THE EPIC THAT CHANGED HOLLYWOOD. Watching this very informative documentary made me want to see the film again, particularly the second half which is my least favorite part of the film, but one maybe I might like more now. At some point over the next few days, I will watch the "Antony and Cleopatra" section of the film (on disc 2 in the set).

But who could beat the story of the house in this middle-class town, where the police say an exotic dancer at a nude juice bar had a severed hand, nicknamed Freddy, preserved in formaldehyde, and six human skulls?

The police said it was unclear where the body parts had come from, but that did not deter them from charging the dancer, Linda E. Kay, 31 — who works at Hott 22, a strip club in Union — with unlawful disposition of human remains.

The police said they found the crudely hacked hand inside a Mason jar in Ms. Kay’s bedroom on Friday afternoon after answering a call from a woman who said that an owner of the house, Sean McDonough, had threatened to kill himself with a hammer.

When the police arrived, Mr. McDonough was nowhere to be found, but Ms. Kay answered the door.
She became uncooperative, the police said, and they proceeded to search the house based on the phone call and found the jar containing the hand.

Tonight's "Big Brother 7" episode should prove pivotal for whether the "worm turns" in the coming week.

Janelle is on everyone's hit list.  Will and Mike "Boogie" are gleefully anticipating a power shift.

And not a couple of them are worried that a former evictee might return (although it's unlikely, IMO, because "we" haven't been given an opportunity to choose one to reenter the house...although CBS might opt to do it themselves).

I'm not feeling 100% today...heck, not even 75% today.

More like 68.5 %, I'd say (conservatively).  Didn't want to get out of bed this morning...but....

Allergy symptoms abound....am being extremely sensitive lately to perfurmes/colognes.  Don't know if that's caused by some other allergen or not....but I've had to stop an elevator once this week and get out before my floor because I was being overwhelmed by scent.

Back from a really nice meeting.  It looks like I'll be helping to develop and then direct a kids show - sort of like The Doodlebops - rock and roll for three to eight year olds (The Doodlebops skew VERY young - one to four).  I like the guy whose idea it is and I think it has a lot of potential.  We'll start casting in about four weeks, and we'll workshop the show for three performances in late January/early February.  If it works, then he'll try to get bookings everywhere, and also try to get us a TV deal.  I think this has some real back-end merit, especially TV, and if it went there, I'd either produce it and/or direct it and/or both.

Finally finished the final song (it occurs three times with three different sets of lyrics) to PennyO's show.

I guess I'm too old now for that kind of a movie!

Some days ago, in my hometown (Southwest of France near the city of Cognac) I went to listen to.... believe it or not, a French Barebershop Quartet.

Of course, the theater has no air conditioning system and, being a sweltering night, it was quite a task for both the audience and the performers...

They sing in French and in English; at one moment, we were asked to guess the song: I have to humbly say that I was the only one to recognize the Vultures' Song from the Jungle Book, "We're Your Friends!"

Anyway, here's a pic of the group! Don't ask me why they dress that way! So strange and unBarbershoppy!

http://bluefish-art.com/html/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=2

Also, here's a little write-up about them I found on some site:

"The name ot the quartet is "The french Barber Shop Quartet". We sing a few barber shop songs in English and many humoristic songs in English too, and still with the Barber Shop harmony. We sing 3 or 4 songs in French to remain exotic. Cécile is a lyric singer, she sang in many operas and she is soprano. Isabelle is ajazz singer, she has sung in many clubs. She is alto. Bertrand is also a jazz singer, and he imitates many instruments with his voice. He's also an actor and he is the funny guy. Bruno is the leader of the band, he plays many instruments (clarinet, flute, guitar, banjo...). He sings the tenor part and he's the one who speaks to introduce the songs. He speaks English. The band is professional and plays everywhere in France: festivals, theaters, open space etc.. They begin to get famous because of the qualities of the voices but also because it's a real show they're providing. It all began eight years ago when four friends who were singers as well discovered the Barber Shop style(which is unknown in France) and decided to sing it for their own pleasure. To sing in America with real barber shop quartets is the top of our careers."

Hope you'll enjoy reading about a little bit of Americana direct from France!

Had some good experiences with TV shows tonight.

I began the viewing evening with SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW on Showtime-HD. Because of the computer generated world that this takes place in, I didn't find the HD version any more effective than the standard definition version (which Showtime is showing letterboxed on others of its channels). Some of the movie is fun but much of it still irritates me. Occasionally, a film will grow on me if I see it a few times. (NASHVILLE did.) This one hasn't improved with multiple viewings. I doubt I'll watch it again.

Are we talking about the Liz Taylor version of CLEOPATRA?  I really enjoyed that film, even though I had planned to hate it.

Yes, the 1963 CLEOPATRA.

Next came two episodes of GREY'S ANATOMY shown back-to-back. Both of these were from the first season. The first one was a basically feel good episode with good things working out for everyone.

The second episode was payback time with many of the cast paying prices for their good deeds or relationships. This was the episode where we first learned that Dr. Shepherd (McDreamy) was married.

I finished the evening with tonight's CSI postpopned by an hour via the DVR. I remembered most everything about the episode very early as far as the identity of the murderer, but there was a special twist at the end after the identity of the killer was revealed that I had forgotten about.

Also, it was fun to see more subtle clues planted in the season's episodes suggesting the cliffhanger surprise we got with Sarah and Grissom at season's end.

The book I started this afternoon was written by former figure skater and Olympic judge Jon Jackson. It's partly an autobiography but also anonfiction account of the complex judging machinations that go on behind the scenes of major skating competitions, especially those which culminated in the judging scandal at the Olympics a few years ago.

MattH, have you ever heard of a book called Wee Girls? Right now the editor's name escapes me but it is the Irish Women's experience in Austraila and New Zealand and it is a collection of short stories.

I actually got to meet Cecelia Ahern a few years ago when I went to Minneapolis to see the Chieftains and she was signing copies of her book, PS I love you. It is a fun read and I enjoyed it.

Grain harvest has started in North Dakota. In some areas of the state, the crop is such poor qaulity they are just swathing it for straw. Here in the REd River Valley, the qaulity is not bad but the qauntity is not there...

I am hoping it is not overly hot when classes start for many of the classrooms and dorms do not have AC!

No one commented on it yesterday when it started making the rounds of internet sites (or if someone did, I missed it), but I think Hugh Jackman is a great idea for Billy Bigelow in a remake of the CAROUSEL film.

I wonder who's being considered to direct? Or to play Julie?

Wow, that is kind of tough without my bio in front of me; but off the top of my head:

MUSIC MAN, CARNIVAL, SOUND OF MUSIC, THE FANTASTICKS (Twice), HELLO DOLLY (Twice), SHE LOVES ME, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, THE BAKER'S WIFE, SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, A WONDERFUL LIFE, SCROOGE, CABARET, COMPANY, SWEET CHARITY, 42ND STREET, OLIVER (Twice), BAH, HUMBUG, THE AMOROUS FLEA, MY FAIR LADY, and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.

I have never really specialized in musicals, I usually get asked to do them.

I've done '1776' twice. The first time I played Caesar Rodney (far from my first choice of roles since he's off stage for such a long stretch).

The second time I did it I was down to the last two in being considered for John Dickinson which I REALLY wanted. Alas, I missed it and got Judge Wilson instead. He has some wonderful moments in the show, and I enjoyed playing it, but the part isn't as rich as Dickinson, of course.

The touring company was through this area last year, so I imagine it will start being done around here quite frequently.  I beleive a theater in Olympia did it this season.  One of our local theaters is doing THE FULL MONTY next season... AND, NO, I will not be auditioning.

I'm back from seeing Little Women at the Village Theatre in Issaquah.  Let me tell you that it truly is a "village" theatre.  It has one aisle down the middle and two sections of seats that are six seats across.  Next to the outside seats are walls to the outside of the building.  It only has about 20 or so rows.  It's very small and intimate.  It was a perfect setting for the reading.

As for this version of Little Women...I loved it!  It's absolutely delightful.  There was a lot of humor throughout the show, it got serious without being maudlin.  It didn't manipulate the emotions and wasn't overly dramatic.  I think it's a better version that what ended up on Broadway (not that I've seen it, I only know that from the CD).
