Very well, then, the notes have been read and so, if you're game, let the posting begin.

Well, it's now 3:45AM EST... and I'm still up...

As for Shire songs... There's not much Shire I don't like - at least Maltby & Shire wise.  I'd have to do some research to see which Shire only stuff I like, but in the meantime...The three biggies: Starting Here, Starting, Now; Baby; and Closer Than Ever.  I also like big... although, after going through some of the cut material from that show... I'm glad it was cut.  -Although, some of the "old" stuff got put back in...???  "I Wanna Gonna Home", "Stop, Time", and "Now I Want To Know" are standouts for me in that score.  "I Think I May Want to Remember" (please don't bring this in for auditions, most audition pianos don't "play" well enough for the repeated note figures - even if the audition pianist can), "I Don't Remember Christmas", "I Chose Right", "If I Sing", and, of course, "The Story Goes On" (gotta love Liz Callaway).  *And as for Closer Than Ever - that's a HARD book to play; and over the course of an evening, it's not only a technical challenge, but an endurance one as well.  Patrick Scott Brady awes me!

As for another topic...

Since we're due for some more snow today here in the DC metro area....

What are your favorite snow/winter songs?

And on another topic...

-Gray t-shirt, gray boxer briefs, blue sweats and socks.

Thanks George. I have had a great day indeed. The last hour has been one of unexpected phone calls. My nephew in Queensland rang  and a friend that I have known for over 40 years but rarely see. Still nearly 4 hours to go of the day here.
I don't really know much of the work of Mr Shire but shall of course check on what I do have before I make an ass out of myself and write the wrong songs down.

The first thing I think of now with "Shire" is hobbits!
I did see a production of "Baby" which I quite enjoyed. I enjoy the OBC recording of "Big". "I Don't Remember Christmas" is a favourite as of course is the wonderful "Autumn".

First off...
The very happiest of birthdays to you, Tom!!!

Would have been here to join the festivities earlier, but I had a lengthy phone conversation with my very own sister, so that was nice.

The birthday boy said...
Quote
Copiers are such friendly animals Ann. They should be sung to to encourage their reproduction system to go into action.

Funny, the same thing works on me. :D

Now that is funny Jed. Hope there is someone there to pick up on the idea. Just had a phone call from my little brother - lives about 4 hours away. Earlier I had a call from my older brother who lives about 8 hours away in the other direction. (They don't really know each other at all!) Strange to hear from my relatives in a way. Two phone calls from natural brothers who I have only known for a little over a decade. It's a good feeling to be thought of as "family". Thanks for your Birthday greetings Jed and you have no fear - I know the boundaries - I won't sing to you!

Seems I'm more enthusiastic about Shire than any composer currently writing.  I thought of him yesterday when, during the discussion of some less grand composer, Shire's I'll Never Say Goodbye was mentioned.

DW Joy and I are the only ones we know who are very fond of Like a Baby.

Back when we were considering our favorite BK-tracks, I was thinking of Stop Time sung by Liz Callaway.

I think I Chose Right is the best love song to hit Broadway in the past 20 years.  And Miss Byrd?  I know of no better song written since.  But Travel could be my favorite.

OK, so I'm unable to be very selective here:

Crossword puzzle
I don't remember christmas
I hear bells
One step
I'll Never Say Goodbye
What could be better?
I want it all
The ladies singing their song
And what if we had loved like that?
What Am I doin'?
One of the good guys
Fathers of fathers
It's never that easy/I've been here before
Dancing All the Time
Coffee, Black

It amazes me that Autumn was written for a colelge musical (it has a nun choral background).  A song I wrote for a college musical has the same plot as She Loves Me Not.
I know it seems like a long list, but I'm sure I've left out many.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :D ;D

TCB,you really crack me up.  I can't wait to meet you sometime.

Jose:  You sound so cuddly in your boxer briefs and sweats.  I'd go on, but I'm told this a family site.  I hate it when they have NO DANCING AISLES in stores.

Jed:  No pics of you in the purple tights yet?  Are they still holding up under the massive power of your thunder thighs? ;)

I Don't Remember Christmas is a favorite.

Her Laughter in My Life is a fave too (but only sung by Guy Haines-- after all that is the song where Guy pulled a Shirley MacLaine and was intoduced to the world)

I like Miss Byrd too

Yesterday, I got stung by a bee, and thoughts of bright copper kettles and whiskers on kittens did not help one bit!!!!!!  My hand is still swollen.   Brown paper packages tied up with string, my ass!!!   TCB, don't you DARE touch that line!!!!

Favorite Maltby/Shire: unquestionably "Starting Here, Starting Now" as sung by Barbra Streisand in COLOR ME BARBRA.

But I like many of their songs from their revues and from BABY. I haven't listened to BIG enough to have a feel for the music. Sounds like something I should break out and listen to this week some time.

My favorite Maltby Shire song is The Story Goes On sung by Liz Callaway. I have to agree with Matt that Streisand's Starting Here, Starting Now is also gorgeous. The comedic song Miss Byrd done by Sally Mayes is priceless. You have to see her perform it to get all the humor of the song.

DR Kerry, so sorry to hear about the bee sting. I hope it doesn't prevent you from opening envelopes. If so, MG/Lyn can open it for both of you.

-And one of these days, I'm gonna figure out how to insert images and smileys into the post, rather than attaching them.  But not hurry.  I'll check the technical board.

Good morning, from a very snow and sleet covered Northern Virginia.  *It's actually quite beautiful when I don't have my glasses on, but even with my glasses on it's still nice - even though it's changed over to sleet and rain now.  Should be interesting getting in to the city later for the show.

-And at least we got our newspaper this morning - the one that my pic is in! (Let's see who reads the late night/early morning posts) -Our newspaper carrier tends to not deliver on bad weather days - which is understandable, but still...  I think of them like the Post Office, "Neither rain, nor snow... " - or whatever the order of meteorological conditions is.  And I've seen our newspaper delivery "boy" - he's some sturdy, 40-ish man with a good car with good tires.  ;)

DR Kerry - I'm an in indeed cuddly - and even more so now that I've put on a sweatshirt!

And a self-correction from yesterday's post - Oh, and as BK pointed out in the late-night posting frenzy, "The Promise" is by Shire, not Legrand...  I guess I got mixed up reading all the posts... saw it mentioned... It took me a while to figure it out, but my favorite Michel Legrand song is On My Way To You.  For me, many of his great tunes are marred by trite lyrics, but I don't speak French, so some of them are marred by trite translations.

On My Way To You moves me deeply.  Once, I was asked to play it and the wedding of a couple I did not know.  When I found out it was his third marriage and her second, well, that made the song quite emotional for everybody.

The lyrics are by the Bergmans (Marilyn was a childhood friend of my father, when they shared the same last name), who also wrote I'll Never Say "Goodbye" (from The Promise)

Who needs more posts, say I?  Who needs more posts when the posts we've got are so damnably cherce?

Mr. Shire is a treasure and the fact that he works so infrequently as a film composer is one of the great injustices.  So, I'll throw in a few of his classic film scores, starting with his masterpiece Return to Oz.  To that add The Conversation (sparse but brilliant), The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three, The Promise, and Old Boyfriends (when I saw the very first workshop of Flight or Take Flight or whatever they're calling it these days) I was the only person in the audience who knew where Mr. Shire had gotten the glorious tune for the best song in the show - right from Old Boyfriends), and quite a few others.

Song-wise, my favorite remains Autumn, as done by Miss Barbra Streisand - it was my first exposure to Shire and Maltby and so it holds a special place.  I also love It Goes Like It Goes from Norma Rae, and, of course, a ton of others.

If you don't have David Shire at the Movies, which I produced for Bay Cities and if you don't have Return to Oz, seek them out.

Hate to be boring, but... I still have no answer to what I asked on the Technical Support Board.  When I highlight a word and hit any of the icon, color, font, etc. buttons, all I get is a verbal description of what I've done, but no results. I have to admit that I am not as familiar with David Shire's songs as I should be...which gives me more songs to be exposed to in the future!  My favorite of his songs that I do know are:

The Story Goes On
I Don't Remember Christmas
Stop, Time

I DO want to get the "Baby" cast recording.  Lately, I've begun to feel that my collection of cast recordings in inadequate.  I mean I have a lot, but there are so many that I don't have that I really want.

Very glad about Saddam's capture, not so glad about the popularity boost this will undoubtedly bring to the Republican party.  Another 5 years of Bushdom and Idiocracy (a word I've coined in his honor) is just a scary thought for me.

Panni, when you highlight the word it will show the code for what you want it to do.

Only when you post will you see the final result.

Maybe you should use WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) instead which works more like a general word document.

Panni - If you have a mac, you won't see a lot of the effects.  The glow one doesn't work, for example.  Just make sure whatever you type is inbetween the brackets, and it should show up for everyone else.  But highlighting doesn't work for me...I have to get the code up first, then type inbetween.
As DR Jed would say...damn those macs :)

I love a sunburnt country
A land of sweeping plains
Of rugged mountain ranges
Of droughts and flooding rains
I love her far horizons
I love her Jeweled sea
Her beauty and her terror
This wide brown land for me

The stark white ring-barked forests
All tragic to the moon
The saphire misted mountains
The hot gold hush of noon
Green tangles of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil
And Orchids deck the tree tops
And ferns, the warm dark soil

Core of my heart my country
Land of a rainbow gold
Through flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold
Though earth has many splendours
Wherever I may die
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

(A few verses from a poem by Dorothea McKeller - every Oz person about my age would have recited this as a 10 year old - it is amazing how the verses stay with you nearly half a century on)
Why post it today. Just triggered off by an earlier post by DR Jose who recently visited these shores.

I just came across the following article from the Los Angeles Times (http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-tableware26nov26,0,2146796.story?coll=la-headlines-food) on-line, the sort of trivia that some of us get interested in.  The only problem is that the photo that is integral to the quiz at the end isn't included with the article.

Well, at least I got some laundry done this afternoon...  Otherwise, it's been filled with surfing, browsing, wondering, deciding, etc...

*I was just browsing the new Telecharge site... It seems that it's winter sale time again!  Hmmm...  Maybe I will see Phantom of the Opera again.  I need me a Hugh Panaro fix!

DRs Tomovoz and Kerry - I LOVE Bienenstich cakes.  Soooo good.  Sadly, a now defunct bakery near me used to make them, it's where I discovered them.  I used to buy one each week and put it in the green room before a show - boy, did that disappear fast.  I've been toying with making one... hmm.. nothing really planned for tomorrow.  My favorite part is the crunchy topping - kind of like of almond/brittle/toffee... and all that powdered sugar!  And the pastry cream!  And you use brioche dough for the base too!  All that butter!

DR Panni - At least for me (using IE), I just have to make sure my text stays highlighted - usually my finger slips.  Otherwise, I hit the "code button", then type my text between the on/off brackets.

Oh, and I just had some more ice cream... chocolate, M&Ms, and marshmallow goo!  (a Camelot reference)  -One of Friendly's Ice Cream Shoppe Creations.  YUM!

And DR Maya - Mamma Mia! - Thumbs up?  Thumbs down?

I've had the "David Shire at the Movies" CD since it first came out and (I'm really sorry about admitting this, BK) I had forgotten that it was a Bay Cities/BK and Nick Redman produced CD!  It's been A LONG time since I've listened to it!  I will definitely rectify that situation.

Anyway, some of my favorite Shire songs (all of them are Maltby/Shire songs):

Another Wedding Song (I told my sister that if she and her boyfriend--of more than 14 years--ever got married, that I would HAVE to sing this at their wedding.  It would be the second marriage for both of them.)
I Chose Right
I Don't Remember Christmas
I Hear Bells
I Want It All
I Wouldn't Go Back
It's Never That Easy/I've Been Here Before
The Ladies Singing Their Song
Life Story
Miss Byrd
One Step
Patterns
Pleased With Myself
She Loves Me Not
Stop, Time
The Story Goes On

I'm now going to my sister's house (she, with the boyfriend of 14 years) and am going to make chocolate chip cookies for a cookie platter silent auction that I'm involved in at work. :)

I also going to make some cookies with black and white M&M's.  There are special 14 oz and larger packages of M&M's that are filled with only white and black ones (each M is either white or black...it's not like they're cow M&M's).  So that's what I'll be doing.

It was a great pleasure to play Alan in BABY, and we also got to do the choral parts since we did the show with a chorus of 2. All of the other actors played the "vocal minority" when they were needed to do so. Gave us much more to do and it was a great score to learn and sing. Both Alan's second act solo "Easier to Love" and his last duet with Arlene "And What If We Had Loved Like This?" were tremendous acting and singing numbers. Loved them.

Spent the afternoon watching THE HOT ROCK and then the first hour or so of HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS just because I felt like a fantasy.

When I go back, I'll probably put in ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY which came yesterday along with quite a few other DVDs from DeepDiscount's 20% off sale that many of us participated in.

Have to finish by 8, however, so I can settle in for the second three hour installment of ANGELS IN AMERICA.

I'm in an office at the moment, waiting to play a short "guest appearance" at a function here in southern Calif.

Then I will hop a plane and go home to see about my DR Kerry's bee-stung hand!!

Wonderful DuPar's pancakes were consumed with gusto and bravura....and also with BK yesterday morning.  We chatted in a lively and esteemed way, and it was a sparkling start to a Saturday morning!

Which of two collections of Charlie Chaplin shorts (The Mutual et al)are  better quality. One is called the Essential Charlie Chaplin Collection (12 Discs contains 57 of Chaplin’s legendary shorts) and the other is Charlie Chaplin Short Comedy Classics - The Complete Restored Essanay & Mutual Collection which are 7 discs  Fully restored and transferred from premier quality 35mm negatives with new digital stereo scores.

Well - after viewing it on TCM a few days ago, I finally decided I needed to buy the 2001:A Space Odyssey on DVD....widescreen of course.

It is one of a few films I saw in high school and just after in a Roadshow or other special attractions venue.  I was puzzled by it then, and still am, but I think I want to own it.

Others I saw in the B I G theatres:

LE MANS, WHERE EAGLES DARE, ICE STATION ZEBRA

DR JRand, have you bought 2001 yet? If not, be sure you order the 2001 that is part of the Stanley Kubrick Collection. (It says The Stanley Kubrick Collection in a blue banner across the top of the snapper case. NOT The Kubrick Collection but The Stanley Kubrick Collection.) It's the only release (of several) that has an anamorphic widescreen transfer. The other releases look fine but they were merely letterboxed without the anamorphic enhancement.

Yeah! Don't worry I will eat them.

Hey it's not that long a trek!

Well it's been 6 days. And I have to do 14. So one more week.

Has anybody else been having a horrible time getting onto this board. It took me 10 minutes and when I clicked "new" it brought me to page 3 (when I should have been on page 1).

I gotta go now to watch Trading Spaces and then Survivor.

We are having a huge blizzard. And I had to drive home it the early stages. It was horrible (I should have left my aunt's earlier). I was checking for snow every 15 minutes. But it just sort of came out of nowhere.

Thanks to all those who gave me tips on how to use the various extra functions. I still love my Mac, no matter what. I'll try some out now as I write and see what happens.
It's cold, rainy and dreary today, unusual for LA. I was out doing various things and decided to get a caramel latte, as caramel always makes me think of childhood days in bed and instantly warms[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%][/move] me up.
So I got a big take-out cup and drank a bit as I drove, then placed it in the cup holder. As I parked at Trader Joe's, I lifted it up for another sip --- and the whole thing spilled all over my front seat. Including over a piece of mail belonging to my landlady which I accidentally got (and opened, thinking it was mine) and was carrying around to give to her.

That is a nice photo, Andrea.  And Craig, that's pretty darn cool what you were able to do to/with that "Bruce Almighty" photo!

Right now, I'm baking cookies at my sister's house (so I don't have to buy all the ingredients that I don't have) and the first batch of chocolate chip cookies turned out rather nicely.  Both my sister and niece agree.  Now on to chocolate chip cookies with walnuts then white and black M&M cookies.  I'm not sure if I'll make a batch with both black and white M&M's or half a batch with black M&M's then a half a batch with white M&M's.  I have a while to decide...AND even after all of that, my sister wants a batch of cookies with cut up almond Snickers in them.  We'll see if that's possible or if it's just too much cookies.  I did buy the Snickers, though, so at least that part's taken care of.

My sister's boyfriend is taping "Angels in America" and he'll make me a copy.  I'll watch that later in the week.  Otherwise I hope everyone's Sunday is going well!

We're taping Angels for later.

Meanwhile, before I managed to finally get der Brucer off the computer (and then some), I was watching an interesting Christmas special on TNT.  Titled Christmas in Washington, it featured Ashanti, Kenny Chesney, Renee Fleming, the Pres and Laura...but that wasn't what I found interesting.

What was interesting was the venue, the National Building Museum. (http://www.tourofdc.org/museums/NationalBuildingMuseum/)  Sure, that sounds boring, but it is one of the most stunning interiors in Washington DC, with gigantic faux marble collumns supporting a roof of iron and glass over a four-story atrium.  The building was originally built to organize and dispense the pensions for those who fought in the Civil War, and has some of the most unusual flights of stairs I have ever encountered, with longer than usual treads and very short risers (about half the usual height), so that the injured veterans on crutches could more easily climb to the higher levels.

Der Brucer and I discovered this museum on a trip to DC a few years ago, when they had a temporary exhibit about the architecture at the Disney theme parks.  It's not too far off the beaten path, and worth repeated visits.  And I could spend a fortune in their on-site bookstore, given the chance!

I am sure that there is indeed no link between Marathon mans' death and TCB.  I can verify that he was indeed at the steam baths all day. He was the young lad in charge of the soap. So many people kept dropping it. I remember that day well as young TCB was asked to pose for a Greek Urn. And I know there are a few people who would like to know just how much does a Greek earn for soap duty.

The National Building Museum is one of my favorite places in the world, but I've not seen much of the world

TCB's first job was as Clarabell, unless I'm dreadfully confused.

Mamma Mia is significantly emptier than crack, as experiences go.  A smarmy plot that was previously used in a flop Lerner & Lane musical, and every song is shoehorned in nonsensically, which is supposed to be fun, but isn't.  Then they give a curtain call that has all the energy and fun that the show lacked.

DW Joy was brilliant at the concert today with the holiday songs by musical theatre writers; brought down the house (and a handsome house it is, the Donnell).  She sang Say Amen from Our Wedding - The Musical even though that's not one of her numbers on the original cast album.  www.weddingmusical.com (http://www.weddingmusical.com)

You'd think I'd have learned by now to refrain from drinking any beverage while reading HHW.  Or maybe I just need to get a Tom-and-Tom-induced-spit-take screen for my monitor.

You assume correctly.

"Survivor" has ended here on the West Coast.

I was very pleased with the end result!

Am delighted it's over!  Hope I never see Jon or Burton or Lill again (Lill doesn't clean up very well, does she?  And does she wear that uniform EVERYwhere she goes???)  Hope I never have to hear Darrah's voice again.

Today was full of things to do.  It's always traumatic planning to go away and getting things arranged.  I've had the weight of the world removed from my shoulders today, having done all I think I can do save a few small things that I will accomplish over the next couple of days.  It's amazing that no matter how early I started, I still allowed myself to get tense and keyed up.  Today, the tension lifted and I've been on a sort of high all afternoon and evening. Am looking forward to a really good night's sleep!

I understand "Wicked" is being shipped by Amazon.com.  They started shipping Friday, according to my source.  Anyone who preordered may be getting their copies as early as Monday.

I hope you can't catch HBO through the internet. I have thought of a few possibilities but don't know what it stands for!

I am in the library studying.  Scratch that.  I am in the library attempting to study.
Has anyone ever read the OZ books?  I mean, the whole set?  I have...and I remember a little thing that Frank invented called a knowledge pill.  One would take these pills and instantly have whatever knowledge they needed.  There was a math pill, a history pill, etc.  Does anyone have an archaeology or art history knowledge pill lying around?

Hello fellow dear readers. Busy day today. In our church worship service, a comedy skit written by none other than DR Sandra. Mixed reviews. The old folks don't like anything new; everyone else loved it. Then a board meeting that went on for hours and hours.

Kerry, sorry to hear about your bee sting. Hope it's feeling better.

I'll dig around in my rococo patch and see if I can find one here in OZ Ann. I suspect all those pills are with my marbels and I have lost them lately. Hope that makes sense. Over here we usually say that there are kangaroos loose in the paddock when we "have lost it".

My mom taped Angels in America: Perestroika.  I'm watching it tomorrow.

I finished studying but I can't get to sleep.

I'm wearing a blue top with a weird indescribable print and blue slacks.  And I'm still wearing my snow boots.

Am I the only one who now desperately wants a description of the indescribable print on Maya's shirt?

Every once in a while I'm really proud to be in this business. Seeing ANGELS IN AMERICA was one of those rare occasions. I thought it was superb - made me laugh, made me cry, made me think. I never saw it on stage, but why compare? This is one thing, that's another. Bravo.

hahaha...it's weird....like it has blue and white swirley things that vaguely resemble fleur de lis..and it has "fleur" spelled out in random places.

I'm not wearing any purple tights right now!  ;)

BTW, Tomovoz, in case you missed my 3 a.m. birthday greetings, I'll repeat them now. Happy Birthday! (Your new name sounds very Russian. Of course, in Russian, the accent has to be on the second syllable. TomOVoz.)

I found the picture of Jose in the Washington Post's Arts section.  He looks quite serious, even though it is clearly a pic of a rehearsal.  He is shown in the pit, looking up at two actors onstage with swords drawn and crossed.  Too bad they didn't get around to interviewing him, as well as his conductor.  Another case of journalists dropping the ball, or baton in this case.  (Said conductor, George Fulginiti-Shakar, has his pic included as well, but comes off looking like someone from a mad scientist movie.)

Oh, drab olive sweatpants and a bright red t-shirt with the Bounce logo, from the Kennedy Center production.

I do believe he's the only other East Coaster who keeps hours as late as I do!

I should be so lucky!  I've just about given up on the studying at this point...but that doesn't mean I'm as "done" as I should be

Well, I'm back home and most of the cookies turned out just fine.  The chocolate chip cookies with and without the walnuts were fine.  I also made some with melted chocolate and white peanut M&M's but I added a little bit of water because the cookie dough seemed a bit too thick.  When they baked, they spread too much and I ended up with very flat cookies that each had two or three bumps where the peanut M&M's were.  The real problem is that they broke too easily.  They tasted fine, but I don't think that they can hold up to being part of a platter of cookies for a fund raiser.  Oh well...something for me and my sister and niece.  We liked them.  :)

Hey, I'm East Coast now!  Der Brucer and I moved, remember?

There's got to be a newspaper vendor that sells out-of-town papers.  Or you might try the library.  The problem is, like I believe Jose pointed out, the pic of him isn't in the on-line edition.

Good evening/morning!

DR Maya - The pic is in today's/yesterday's Washington Post - front page of the Arts section.

DR SWW - The pic was actually taken during the fight call before the show.  And the serious look on my face is due to the fact that I'm hoping that the swords and spears don't come anywhere near my face.  :o  As for not being interviewed... No biggie.  I also wasn't in the mood to be interviewed, and I think Mr. Pressley picked up on that.  I also do a lot of prep work before the show, and my position in the pit was not convenient to where Mr. P. was sitting.

*Hey, and now that we're on the same coast, we should definitely plan a get together!  I'll even cook!  :D

As for the National Building Museum... Great space.  And some very fun and educational exhibits.  Whenever I work at Ford's, it's just a three block away from the theatre.  *I didn't realize that "Christmas In Washington" is now on TNT - it used to be carried on one of the big three - NBC, I think.

DR Panni - *And I know this should probably go over on the technical board, but...  The key to using the "buttons" is to make sure the text you want to modify is between the sets of brackets.  Remember how we used <></> on the old board to italicize, bold, underline, etc.?  Just apply the same thing here with the [] [/].

I usually hit the button first and then type the text in the middle, between the ] and the [.  For example, I'll hit the Italics button: *I'll use the <> instead of the [] for the examples.

 appears

Then type the word I want to italicize between the ] and the [:

word

and Voila!

And as I mentioned before, if you use the highlight method, make sure the word you highlighted is still highlighted when you hit the button.  The [] [/] should then appear "around" the word(s) you highlighted.
