Post by: bk on August 08, 2006, 12:33:40 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about the Ides, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently bewaring the Ides of August - no fools they.

Good morning all!

Dear TCB, Thank you for the offer of a shrine.  You are sweet as always.

I think I had to buy the two plots because they are in the military section.  It was odd how it all came about but a good lesson  for some.

My Mother told me for years after Dad died that I didn’t have to worry about a thing for her, that everything was paid for except the opening and closing (which was union) of the grave.

We fought for years about my getting one near them.  She didn’t want me to be down here in Florida by myself.  My stand was that when the pioneers made the trek out West and one of them died, they buried them where they fell.  They didn’t drag the bodies with them all the way to California or where ever they were going.  I couldn’t see the expense of having my body shipped to a place I never lived and didn’t give two figs about. Not to mention that I thought I wouldn’t be anywhere near them since Dad was in the military section.

Anyway, she kept at me until one day I said I would call and ask about it.  The sales guy told me it was odd that I had picked that day to call because there was a pair of plots that had just been given up by a couple that had made other plans.  They were one row down and two or three over from where my Dad is and since I was the daughter of a vet, I could get them.

I bowed to fate and said I’d take them but I wanted payments for the entire package like my Mom had.  That’s when I found out that Mom hadn’t bought the entire package for herself—she had only bought the plot itself.  Dad was taken care of but she was not.

What a shock a roo that was and has now been corrected.

Anyway let that be a lesson to you to make sure you understand exactly what you are buying.   In my case, I chose that one of the graves I have is the full package and the other is only the ground.  I think that if I ever marry, since I bought the plot, the least he can do is take care of the rest but I will make sure that is understood.

Not exactly a pleasant morning topic but one we all have to deal with sooner or later.   :D

Safe travel vibes to Dear Elmore!

Congrats to DR Maria!

And DR Ginny, I'm sorry but I had to shut down before I had the chance to see your post.  Your welcome to "ride the bus" with me anytime!

I also wonder where Vixmom is.  I thought it was just me, missing her posts.  I hope all is well for her and her family.

Hi TD!  Sorry that I can't stay and chat--my bus is almost to my stop.

And with that, have a wonderful day all!

I'm sure Deb (Vixmom) is OK, she's just very busy with her new job. Darn those work hours. She can't post like she used to.

At least one of my desert island movies would be West Side Story. Imagine sitting on the sand with nothing but palm trees and the surf slapping on the shore watching West Side Story! I'll have to think about the other 9 movies.

Larry, you have a show coming up in the Musical Theatre Festival and Anthony may be in one of the shows also. He did a show three years ago as part of the Fringe Festival (different from the Musical Theatre Festival) called Captain Gravy's Wavy Navy. It will be done again as part of this year's MT festival.

Here are a couple of links to information about the show

The program will be up until next Monday at around noon (Eastern Standard Time). Click on the link then click on Listen to Latest Programme.

Good morning, all!  Thanks for the travel vibe so far!  I hope you will keep them coming.  My flight is late this afternoon, around 4:45.  We will probably begin the trek to Dayton around 1:30PM.

This morning I have some laundry, a search in the car I was driving for a CD case, and some writing for Miss Klea Blackhurst.

DR Ben, good news about Anthony's show!  I will be working on the Singing Nun show, but I'm also represented by "The Night of the Hunter," which I love.  They're also doing Brad Ross' "Little by Little," of which I'm a huge fan.  I got a call about the orchestrations I did for my dear friend Bruce Kimmel's recording, but I'm not sure where they are.  When the show went into the Samuel French catalogue, I asked them to buy the charts and they turned me dow.  Now I don't know if they're in my apartment, thrown out after the 2004 bookcase collapse, or in the Library of Congress with all my recording work.  Oy!

Happy Birthday to Der Brucer!  And my wishes for many many happy and healthy more!

Wow, I haven't been the High Winner in the Trivia Contest in a long long time.  Caps off a great weekend for me - getting to meet the wonderful George and PennyO (with PennyO joining us at - and generously driving us to and from - the Meet the Artists party), getting to be on a talkback panel with Jonathan Betuel (the Last Starfighter screenwriter) and Lance Guest (the Last Starfighter screen star), being assured I didn't make too much of a fool of myself on those panels (the first I've ever done),  most importantly my dear friend Michael getting out of the ICU after 30 days and being in a more regular hospital room.  Definitely a  weekend of highs, finished off by being the HHW Trivia High winner.

I guess we've got to get used to feeling melancholy about all the NYMF talk.   We were so honored to have been asked to do Last Starfighter at NYMF, and it does seem that NYMF is turning out to be a real premier event as far as the NYC fall theater season is concerned.  But our creative staff scheduling problems proved insurmountable within the time frame we had, so we're very much hoping that we'll be asked again next year.  Meanwhile, we'll live vicariously :) - hearty congrats to Larry and Ben's Ant on their involvement.  And to Brad Ross (who lives in our building, BTW).

Ginny, Jane and anyone else with reservations at the CI - I just called to try to drop the first day - I'm having a todo with them about the fact that it raises the rates and it will be cheaper for me to leave the room empty that night.

Anyway, the manager didn't have any record of my reservation! So I emailed her the confirmation I received and she is investigating.  Just in case this is a more widespread problem, you may want to call and confirm your reservation with the hotel.

Looking forward to the BONES rerun tonight. It's the one with one of my favorite, unheralded actors - Adam Baldwin, and since David Boreanez is one of the stars of this series, it will be a bit of an ANGEL reunion for them. I don't remember much about the episode, so it should be fun to see.

I have a good bit of stuff that I recorded during the early morning hours to watch today, so I doubt I'll get to any DVDs, at least during the afternoon.

I have TOM THUMB as the next in the stack. When I watched it some weeks ago off TCM, I was so charmed to see it again after so long a time that I immediately ordered the DVD knowing it had (surprisingly) been released. Hopefully, the DVD will equal if not surpass the quality of the TCM broadcast (which was very good indeed).

Only sometimes, and not August!

•   Kalends (1st day of the month)
•   Nones (the 7th day in March, May, July, and October; the 5th in the other months)
•   Ides (the 15th day in March, May, July, and October; the 13th in the other months)

As WEL correctly notes, the Ides of any/every month are the 15th.  We knew this from childhood in our family because my Mom's birthday was July 15th, hence our yearly family mantra, "Beware the Ides of July."   ;D

Maybe true but kind of weird in any case department:   According to Frances Farmer's nephew, A Man Called Horse is based upon a real incident involving an ancestor of the Farmer clan.  How this came up in our everyday conversation, I have not a clue, but it did.   ;D

Thank you for all the vibes!  In about 15 minutes my brother Randy will drive me to Dayton - in a car and not with a chair and whip - and I shall being my eastward ho! trek.

This is a day that the Macbeths have been behaving badly, and I worry about the sibling fallout.  On the positive side, my dad is doing well; he's got his inner fire back, and he has this cute little walker on wheels with hand brakes that's providing him with a lot of fun.

Dear Friend BK, I had the charts at one point because I got a call several years ago (pre-2004) about letting a production use them.  I fear they're at the Library of congress, since my memory is they weren't anywhere near the bookcase that collapsed.

I will see you all back in Manhatta.  Stay well, dear friends!

Good heavens!  I hope that wasn't some sort of a hint ;)

After calling the CI 3 or 4 times and having them first not have a reservation for me, sending the confirmation email to them and now hearing they will investigate, I decided to bite the bullet and get a room at the Milford Plaza.  It's more, but I can get 2 beds so it will be a lot more comfortable for my nephew and I

So at the moment I have 2 hotel reservations.  I've spent too much time going round and round with the CI manager to just cancel mid investigation, so I'll let her investigate and then cancel down the road a little when she's forgotten all about me.

I got UNKNOWN CHAPLIN on DVD in the mail today, so I put it on (one of my favorite all-time documentaries/miniseries) particularly to see the special "making of" feature (where did they get that fabulous footage used in the three programs. The answer was surpring: not all from the same person.)

In other news...

I'll be heading back down to DC in a few hours, so that I can be back for the second day of rehearsal for Cabaret tomorrow.  Today, however, was spent in Finding Nemo land.  And I had a wonderful time.  A truly wonderful time.

I'll spare you all the gushy details, but, in short, today was one of those days that just made it all worth it.  Great material.  Great process.  Great people.  I didn't want it to end.  I walked out of the rehearsal studios with a big smile on my face, and practically on the verge of tears.  Nothing like a bit of validation to let you know that everything you've been doing over the past couple of years has not been for nothing.

I just love this new little lap top.  It's a Sony Vaio TX750P.  It so small it fits in my purse and only weighs 2 pounds.  You can't beat the battery life either.  Instead of a mere 45 minutes (like I had with the Gateway) this one has 4 hours.

I figured since I could make the October trip, I was owed something nice.  When I do make the next trip I'll have a wonderful small laptop and a great digital camera!

Instead of a burial plot, I think I'd rather have myself cremated.  The question then would be, what to do with my ashes.  Put 'em in a bag, to use as a counterweight at a theater?  Use 'em to line a baseball field?  The options boggle the mind.

Here's the recipe. Mom said to tell you there are lots of brands of cake mixes, but Pillsbury seems to work the best.

Chocolate Pie
1 Pillsbury Devil's Food cake mix
1 can Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge Frosting
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 gal vanilla ice cream (I think it would tast good with any flavor)

Mix 3/4 cup frosting, water, oil and cake mix.
Put in 2- 9 inch pie pans (this will form the crust)
bake at 325 degrees for 20-25 minutes
cool
Soften ice cream. Spread over cool crust.  Freeze hard.
Spread remainder of fudge over the top
Freeze.....enjoy

I wonder what the food situation will be at the birthday party this evening.  I've only eaten the fried catfish sandwich (which, I was suprised to discover) only had three tiny little pieces of catfish), so that's not all that much.  However, I'll try to be very, very good and maybe only have a dessert rather than food I don't really want - unless, that is, there IS food that I really, really want.  I think this is going to be a huge party with lots and lots of people, and since it's a 50th, I think everyone's going to have to get up and say something and maybe they'll have a video and I may just have to escape after an hour or so.  I do not like crowded parties - they drive me crazy.

Tomorrow night will be similar - the opening night parties at the Ahmanson are hugely crowded affairs and I get really claustrophobic.  You can never get to the food table, either.

Last year Danise advised me to join the Choice Privileges rewards program, which I did.  This year when I booked my room at the Comfort Inn I had enough points for two free nights but was told to call back in July for them.  Now I’m told they don’t book more than 30 days prior to your stay and my points are only good for one night.  Also, it might change the rate of the room for the other nights, depending on the hotel’s policy.

At least, according to choice privileges, they still have my reservation on file.  Maybe I should check the hotel.

Cillaliz, did you speak to the hotel or reservations?  I really hope you stay at the Comfort Inn.

Dear esteemed, quixotic, mysterious, hunkolicious, and sinewy BK --

One highlight of this past week's trip to cabaret land (also known as Los Angeles), was when I was subjecting DRs Laura & Sandra & Kerry to one of my rambling car tours around L.A..  I love to point out various historic sites, buildings used for film or TV locations, etc.

Well as we were driving on 8th street, I suddenly pulled to the curb and told everyone "...OK, we have to get out here!"  They all thought I was crazy, until I told them that we were going to walk across the street (in the middle of the block!), and then we would be standing in front of the very real, very actual Erro restaurant.  No, we couldn't go inside and eat shrimp cocktail shrimp out of the barrel like Benjamin used to.  But we were here just the same.

After looking closely at the front of the building for a bit, I turned around and my eyes really widened and I smiled a huge smile.  From standing in front of the Erro and looking north, I could see the blue-green top part of the Wiltern Theatre building.

That means, in December, 1964, if Benjamin had been coming out of the Erro around 10:00 in the morning, he could have walked a few blocks over to the Wiltern and come in and heard my very first public concert!

What a great Los Angeles driving tour we had.....and with wonderful Kerry sitting next to me!

Well, for some reason your name was real familiar when I saw it on the CD's.

Looking at all the info about theater organs also made me think of a place that used to be here in SW Ohio - The Shady Nook.  It was a restaurant between Cincinnati and Oxford, OH (where my DH Richard and DR Elmore went to college).  You'd sit at tables around this pit from which the WLW Moon River Organ would ascend.  What fun and how sad that the place has gone out of business.

Quote

If I had been down the block at my father's office I could have joined him. :)

One of my faves of the theater organ variety is Al Melgard. And he has a great LP playing on the organ at the old Chicago Stadium, but I couldnt find it just now. Of pop organists, my favorite is the rather square Ken Griffin. Probably have everything he ever did. Just dig the sound. Here's my favorite Griffin cover, I think this is a release from after his lifetime, but this cover, if you look at it, has a lot of subtext...

DR Rodzinski, I thought of you today as I was at the Union Gospel Mission Store...they had tons of old LPs and I spotted a Julie London that was quite enticing and a funny local LP from the late 60s called Ben Kelley's Oregon Chorus or something like that...lots of very late 60s guys and gals on the cover and doing songs like Moon River, etc. That one I almost picked up just so I could get it converted to CD...it looked like fun!

We're having a potluck baby shower for a co-worker on Friday and I can't decide which pie to make - peanut butter or chocolate ice cream.  I like the fact that each recipe makes 2 pies - one to take and one to leave home for my family to enjoy.

Which one would transport best, DR Cillaliz?  I do have a cooler and  ice packs.

And here's the Melgard LP I mentioned earlier. This organ was so vast, they couldn't remove it when they tore down the Stadium. It just got torn down with the building. I can remember at Blackhawks games, when the team scored a goal, they'd hit the lowest few notes, and the whole building would shake.

Hmmm I don't know the answer to that.  We only transport them from the kitchen to the dining room.  Probably the peanut butter. It has cream cheese, but no ice cream. They are both very rich. One thing my mother does is serves a small sliver of each.

The new episode of RESCUE ME was filled with upsetting and disturbing scenes tonight, the opposite of last week's very funny episode. The season has only a couple more episodes to go, so things are heating up now and much of the lighter moments are giving way to the inevitable cliffhangers we'll be left with at the end of the season.

Yes Jane......it was called something not-very-original, like "Pizza and Pipes" or something similar.  A fellow named Mike Ohman played there, among others.  And believe it or not, the organ was actually quite small.  It is just that when you can see some of the apparatus involved, it appears very large to the average person.

So stupidly I stopped at Starbuck's for a cup of coffee to enjoy while it was being repaired. And now the car won't start.
