Well, you've read the notes, the notes were together, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just getting their collective heads together.

Good morning, all!  A happy birthday to your father, DR Tomovoz!  My father's grandmother lived to 104.  I wish he would.

In 2001, when the Packard Humanities Institute began the Kern-Herbert project with a certain maestro who deserves no mention, the recording manager was the wonderrful Alison Fox, a retired Angel-EMI manager, and she was the angel on the project, getting us car service to and from Abbey Road, our hotel, and Heathrow; trying to keep the maestro's continuous whims on schedule; soothing ruffled feathers; and being a continuous source of sanity.  She's in Manhattan this week for a holiday, and we will have lunch.  I look forward to her account of what she's been up to since I last saw her in 2002.  I'm hoping that we can throw her some sort of PHI gathering before she leaves.

My best frioend Ron Raines met his lovely wife Dona D Vaughn when they worked on a complete recording of Friml's operetta ROSE MARIE for the Smithsonian in the early 1980s.  The soprano Deborah Vanderlinde, who sang Rose Marie, sang at Ron and Dona's wedding.  This recording was never released.

For years I had cassettes in rather poor sound, which had been given me by the assistant MD on the project.  Recently, through the Cast Recording List, I found information on purchasing bootleg CDs.  The set arrived yesterday. and the sound is great.  I'm burning a set for Ron and Dona as I type this.

And the word of the day is: HABILIMENT!
Maurice thought that, in donning the HABILIMENT of a mime for the costume party, he was sure to be A NIMBLE HIT, but it turned out four others had arrived with the same idea.  They spent the entire time staring at each other silently.

What a yesterday we had.

After I got off work, der B and I headed up to Dover for some supplies shopping, and then picked up the grandlads.  Der Grampa and had given them both gift cards from Borders, and since der G also had a birthday bonus from same he decided it was time to cash in.

Alex, nine, decided he wanted a DVD set of Pokemon movies.  Der B called Magic Mommy about this, and she flatly refused, because she "hates" Pokemon, no further reason needed as far as she is concerned.  Alex had a meltdown, fortunatley not too loud of one.  William, also fortunately, was meltdown-free.  They both eventually found books, and we headed on to a restaurant, where they were both fairly well behaved... but the service was incredibly slow.

Then we headed on back to their home, where Alex told Magic Mommy that he hates her, and she replied nonchalantly "Well, I hate you too."

Magic Mommy, Alex, William, and der Grampa are all heading off today for Cub Scout Camp, William officially for the first time as he is now old enough to be a cub.  I shall be all alone in the house for one night.

And that is the end of my report.

Betty White was there?  Betty White?

Betty "wrote" a great biographical book about her early days in television, her marriage to Allen Ludden, and her later career called HERE WE GO AGAIN.  If you are a TV fan and haven't read it, I recommend it highly.

She is a pioneer....and can be pretty damn funny!

I keep falling behind on the postings.  Sorry for my errancy and truancy.  Yesterday, in addition to being a chock-full day workwise, I spent a few hours with my friend who is improving tremendously after a stroke a month ago.

I also had to go to Great Neck last night.  The train ride home was a shock.  The train was basically empty and the ride very pleasant, and I was thinking boy, this LIRR is great.  Then, at Shea Stadium, what must have been a thousand people got on the train and it went from paradise to the crowded train ride from hell the rest of the way.  Bad timing on my part, I guess.

Good morning everyone.  Sorry to have been so E&T these last few days.  It's been a very busy time for me but hopefully I will soon have good news to report.

Later this afternoon, Rodzinski and I will be flying out to the midwest to hang with his family and attend our friends' wedding.  Our initial plan of conveniently carrying on our bags has been dashed in light of the recent London airport terror alert.  Nobody is allowed to carry on any liquids: water, soda, shampoo, lotion, hair gel... it's suggested that people check their bags.

There are two GREY'S ANATOMY episodes from this season on tonight (they had been showing season one repeats on Thursdays for the past month or so), so I guess if I want to see all of season 1, I'm going to have to rent/buy used the boxed set of the show.

Also, tonight, a funny OFFICE repeat (Dwight in his neo-Nazi mode delivering a speech), and the CSI episode that featured the underground bunker and eleven corpses.

Thursday morning greetings!  My morning started an hour earlier than usual, with a lovely breakfast meeting on the 29th floor of Dayton's tallest building.  That means that my workday will end an hour earlier than usual, too :D

TOD:  A Quiet Thing is not only my favorite Kander and Ebb song, it might just be my favorite all-time song.  That's because it expresses my life philosophy almost perfectly, along with the Jones and Schmidt They Were You, a Calvin and Hobbes strip that I keep on the refrigerator, and a poster that used to hang in my apartment that said, "Happiness is like a butterfly - if you chase it, it will elude you; but if you sit quietly, it will alight upon your shoulder."

On short trips, I would really rather drive.

So would I, DR DearReaderLaura, so would I.  In fact, in putting together our October trip to NYC, DH Richard and I have wished there were someplace driveable where we could safely leave our car and take the train into the city.  Alas, that would make a 1/2 day trip into 2 days, so we're flying.

I'm carrying on my purse/bag but we're checking our bigger bags.  In London folks aren't being allowed to take on anything other than a wallet- no electronic devices, nada.  I did do a sweep of my bag with my co-workers and we had a debate about whether or not my lip gloss constituted a liquid.  We decided that it belonged in my bigger suitcase since I didn't want to chance having to throw it out.  Because if I threw out my lipgloss, that would be letting the terrorists win.  ::)

Did anyone watch SYTYCD last night?  My thoughts and musings below:

I think this is Travis's competition to win.  I enjoy all of the other finalists, but Travis stepped up to the plate this week.  Not only is he as Nigel said, the best technical dancer on the show, but this week he really amped up his performance and charisma.

Also Rodzinski and I thought the broadway number for the girls sucked big time.  They were given a dud, totally unfair for it to be a number in the finals.  The choreography and the costumes got a thumbs down from us.

I must announce that my band, THE BAND THAT SAVED YOUR LIFE, will be playing on Tuesday, August 15 in Hell's Kitchen. Yes, we have not played in well over a  year, but we have dusted off our routine of some of the more forgotten mellow tunes of the 70s, some you'd just like to forget, and a few other oddities for public consumption.

I am the lead singer, and 'Funky Garrison Keillor' of this outfit, so I will do my part to create a good time for all.

The time: 8pm
The place: Rufus, located at 640 10th Ave. between 45th and 46th Streets.

This is in support of The Milk Can Theater Company, and they will have drink specials and a 50/50 raffle and other such folderol. So there will be a cover fee, but it is for a genuine cause.

Yes of course i watched SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

.
.
.

I really think that benji will win.

Personally i would like benji, heidi or travis to win. I would be happy with any of them. But my choices would be heidi first, then benji then travis.

I find donyelle has been a huge letdown. She was so good in the first few weeks. But as i watched the show last night I was wishing that allison was the second girl.

My favorite performances were:
1.benji/heidi salsa
2.benji/travis nerd hiphop
3.Heidi/travis disco.

I really think that benji is the most popular, probably followed by travis and then heidi. But for some reason i really think benji is going to win. He seems to have so many fans.

I wish the show could go on for another week. I am wondering if they will eliminate one (or two) people in the first hour of next week's show. Or will all 4 make it to the end?

I really loved heidi and travis' chemistry. Same with heidi and benji (but they have been dancing longer).

Anyhow i think this year's version is much better than last year. And i actually would consider going to see the tour if it came here (which i know it won't).

I'm back from a wonderful luncheon with Alison Fox.  She reminds me a great deal of Edna Mae Oliver, and that alone should endear her to several of the DRs.  We had a long discussion of megalomaniac conductors, would-be scholars, and other pompous frauds, sometimes all combined in the same person, in the music business, not to mention catching up on the past four years since we last saw each other.

I am now doing laundry and working on a chart for Ms Klea Blackhurst.

And then HOLIDAY IN MEXICO. Talk about a top-heavy movie! They've got Walter Pidgeon, Jane Powell, Jose Iturbi, Roddy McDowall, Xavier Cugat, AND Ilona Massey: two musicians, two sopranos, and two parallel love stories. I'm surprised Carmen Miranda didn't pop over from Fox! But she wouldn't arrive until the next year for A DATE WITH JUDY.

Ilona Massey may have been a plum for MGM executives to try to pick (allegedly several chased her before her marriage), but she didn't have much screen presence or charisma that I can see.

How horrible for you!  Having to ride on a train full of NY Mets fans.

Watched the last hour or so of HOLIDAY IN MEXICO. I did not know it was 127 minutes long, about thirty minutes longer than it should have been. It was a nice introduction to Jane Powell as an MGM Technicolor star (she had two two loan-outs to UA in black and white), but it just went on and on with its silly plots of teenaged girls falling for older men (Jose Iturbi? whose sister and grandchildren are part of the cast).

Even though Jane got to sing "The Italian Street Song" and other operetta gems, I decided not to burn a copy of this musical for myself.

I did have a case once, a child molest case, and it was a hung jury.  After the trial the jurors wanted to speak to both lawyers, so we were allowed to go in the jury room and they told us a lot about thier thought process.  It was fascinating and helped with prep for the retrial which instead of hung was 3 counts not guilty and 2 counts guilty. Since it was impossibe for the truth to shake out that way, it was clearly a compromise verdict.

I used to go to Surprise -- or maybe it was El Mirage. Nice people, but they had no interpreter. They'd get Al, the custodian,  to interpret. It was funny -- the defendant would talk for two or three minutes before the judge would interupt and say, "What did he say, Al?" and Al would say, "He said he didn't do it."

Too funny.  I used to have that happen when I was in private practice in small town Iowa.

Alas, I chose to have a family, and my working days in the court ended. I never got to Superior Court. I only got to Peoria.

Hello people!! I have missed you .

Life has been frantic... Mom's been in and out of the hospital twice in the past two and half weeks, she was originally diagnosed with shingles but since then has been having,  what for lack of a better word, I will call seizures... all her limbs flail uncontrollably, her head lolls, her mouth droops and her eyes roll and she cannot speak... this will last for 15 minutes or so then she slowly regains control of her body  over the next several hours  until she is back to normal....

She spent the past two days in the hopsital for observation, they gave her several MRI's and a Cat scan and have declared her "normal"  except of course for the two brain tumors they discovered two years ago... but they don't  think they could possibly be affecting her.......

They sent her home today saying that there was "nothing" wrong with her other than the shingles....

If I ever write a novel and use stuff from my cases, (which I have often been told to do, but never really wanted to) I would mostly use the Arizona days. In general, the cases I had out there were a lot stranger and would be a lot more interesting to read about

The natives are getting restless here. I better sign off, get them their night time treats and try to get some sleep.

Thanks for the fun conversation, Laura

Meanwhile our house has been the victim of a plumbing disaster... the failure of  $10 part has caused thousands of dollars of damage....

A week ago Tuesday I was awoken at 3 AM to the sound of Vixdad screaming something about water.  I jumped out of bed and the carpet felt damp...

The tube that coonects the hot water tap to the supply had split and gallons of water poured through... it basically disintergrated the sink cabinet , which was made of pressboard and laminate...lifted all the tiles form the underlying plywood , the plywood buckled and the seal tot he toilet came apart, then the water poured thorugh the floor into the bathroom below, on the main floor of the house, destroying the ceiling, soaking the wall board and also taking out parts of the kitchen and hallway ceiling, then the water continued through that floor to the laundry room in the basement, whic had an unfinished ceiling.  It also had a wire shelf reaching from one end to the other on top of which were stacked all the cleans towels and linens (since we lack linen closets) and under which onthe rack were hung Vixdad's work shirts and all my work skirts, dresses and blouses since we also lack adequate closet space.  Sevceral laundry baskets of clean folded laundry wer ealso stores there as well as all of the out of season  clothing....all soaked through with the now filthy water and rending the clothes so heavy as to pull the shelf off the wall and destroy the wall board there.

Finally after tryong to deal with the disaster we realized that we definitely couldn't fix this on our own so called in the insurance co.. the lady came the same day arranged for a "drying crew" to come the next morning.  They brought in four dehumidifiers the size of a three drawer steel filing cabinect, four feet high, a foot square and put two in the basement one on the main floor and one upstairs

each dehumidifier was paired with a  hurricane force fan and we were instructed to keep all windows and doors closed.

These machines throw off a lot of heat and it was the hottest eek we've had recently with outside temps of  up to 100 degrees... indoors about 104.....

the ceramic floors were like walking on hot  beach sand...the top of the new ceramic stove was warm to the touch

It was also impossible to hear anything-  it was like living inside of a white noise machine

Fotunately today they took the machines away and declared everything dry.

The main room bathroom has no ceiling, the wallpaper was stripped from the walls and most of the border tiles have fallen off the wall, the upstairs bathroom is unusable

Now we await word from the insurance co....

On the bright side, today the Vixter had her opening night for You're a Good Man Charlie Brown

She only had a chorus part... but she had a couple of lines and she sang and danced her heart out.

The show a was a lot of fun and a small but appreciative audience cheered them on.  Saturday night is the closing show

Tomorrow is her last day of camp and then she has a few more days of rewhearsal and then her musical revue show goes on next Thursday and Friday ... then Saturday she has her annual Battle of the Books  and then she will be done with all her summer activities  and two weeks or so of summer break left
