Title: INSPIRATION HAS STRUCK
Post by: bk on August 13, 2006, 12:12:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had inspiration but then inspiration struck and now inspiration is picketing, and now it is time for you to post until the inspired cows come home.  The cows won't cross the picket line.

Yes, whatever has happened to Stuart and Jay?  Or, is that have happened?  These verb tenses are so peculiar around here.

The dog was so INDURATE about being housebroken that Josie regularly found it had URINATED on her carpets.

Good morning, all!  The ghost was quiet last night, and I slept late.  I will shortly wend my way down to the recording office and then join Ms Alison Fox for the matinee of INDIAN BLOOD, which feautures our dear friend Rebecca Luker.  Jack Gilpin is playing opposite Rebecca, and I haven't seen him since we worked on TONIGHT AT 8:30 for the Williamstown Theatre Festival.  It should be a lovely afternoon.

I never did find the Cecil Sharp book, so I hope the NYPL has a copy.

Former DR Jay has written to me that atr some point he will return, but I've stopped believing him.  I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Former DR Stuart left the board because he felt there were several anti-semitic comments being thrown around, one comment directed at him, by one of our DRs.  I miss both of them.

Good morning!

Slept the night in cool comfort. Mother Nature truly smiled down on the Carolinas yesterday.

Already heating back up today. By 9:30, it had already reached the high that we got yesterday (71). But right now, my house is still in cool-down mode, so I'm enjoying it.

Since I have a slate of new TV shows to watch tonight (including DEADWOOD, ENTOURAGE, RENO 911 and GREY'S ANATOMY which will be new to me), I'll give this afternoon over to THE AVIATOR. I haven't seen the film since seeing it in the theater. I've read bad things about the transfer, but I'm eager to see for myself what it looks like.

I would love to watch another MR. MOTO film, but I suspect I'll opt instead of another WILD WILD WEST episode while I'm preparing and eating lunch. Then on to THE AVIATOR.

Sunday morning greetings!

I found the five pounds that DR CILLA LIZ lost.

How is it that so many of us have found the same five pounds?  I have discovered that being an information-waitress only one day a week has made my worklife much more sedentary.

I, too, miss dear reader Jay, but he's never coming back, and the reasons for that are, in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo), silly and wrong.  As to Stuart, whom I liked very much, we hashed through what happened but he could not move past it, which is a shame since no one here meant any harm.

Thanks to all and one (and also one and all) for the kind responses.  Penny, I've always been somewhat self-concious about my shoulders, but I just fell in love with that dress and am determined to wear it.  If I have to skip a few servings of dessert, so be it!

No! You have gorgeous shoulders! And a dress that shows them off is perfect for your special day. The Wedding is all about the Bride - whatever makes you feel special and beautiful and worthy of all the attention is the order of the day!! Oh, BOY!!! Shopping for a wedding dress!!! (I wore so many beautiful gowns in various operas and operettas, and especially in Doll's Life - maybe that's why I never married???)
Title: Re:INSPIRATION HAS STRUCK
Post by: PennyO on August 13, 2006, 09:46:31 AM
Anyway, that dress in the "headless bride" pic looked lovely on you - the long neck, despite no head, and those slammin' shoulders! And the embroidery on the fabric looked pretty special. The train seems long - detachable or does it "bustle" up?
Title: Re:INSPIRATION HAS STRUCK
Post by: PennyO on August 13, 2006, 09:48:10 AM
I believe that a large part of why I went into showbiz was all those beautiful costumes! and embroidered fabrics! and trains! Big Skirts! low bodices! Then I spent so much of my working life in Aldonza's rags...
Title: Re:INSPIRATION HAS STRUCK
Post by: PennyO on August 13, 2006, 09:50:27 AM
I still miss the blood red brocade, all hand-beaded, that I wore in a scene in Doll's Life -- after a few weeks in LA pre-Broadway tryout, they took it off me and put it on Betsy! She was, after all, the Star...
Title: Re:INSPIRATION HAS STRUCK
Post by: PennyO on August 13, 2006, 09:52:22 AM
I remember that Harold Prince, himself, came to my dressing room with a very serious face to tell me they were going to use the dress on Betsy - I guess they expected a scene or something... I told him, laughing, that I had been waiting to notice that my dress belonged on the star...

Post by: Ann on August 13, 2006, 09:56:01 AM
The "headless" dress was very pretty great detail on the bodice and the skirt.  The train could bustle up, but we just let it go loose to try it on.  I hadn't realized how heavy those formal dresses can be!  I can only imagine being on stage under hot lights in one of those for long hours.  I've always loved beautiful dresses too, Penny.  Since the costumes I get to wear are usually chorus-girl simple, I decided my wedding day was the perfect time to indulge :)

DR Ann - Thanks for sharing the photos of your wedding dress shopping trip!  Such an exciting time.  I like the online dress very much.

I bought my wedding dress off the rack for under $50 while shopping for a dress for my matron of honor (my only attendant).  It looked a lot like the white dress Princess Leia's wearing when we first meet her in Star Wars: A New Hope.

Dear Esteemed, rested, restored, rejuvenated, and ravishing BK --

Huzzah to you, for taking yesterday to spend on yourself.  A very important thing for everyone to do now and then!!  And don't worry about those strikers outside of the Living Room....Inspiration always was unpredictable and fickle at times.

Former DR Stuart left the board because he felt there were several anti-semitic comments being thrown around, one comment directed at him, by one of our DRs.  I miss both of them.

I personally can not think of a less judgemental, more open and friendly environment than BK's Living Room here at HHW.  To say that we are an incredibly eclectic and diverse group would be an understatement.  But all are human, and valued, and welcome.  Our own dear BK even extends open arms, a big smile, and Orange Chicken to those of us who fall E & T for long spells.

My god....in my own circle of immediate family, we are comprised of male, female, white, black, hispanic, straight, gay, christian, jewish, buddhist, ......  It is wonderful diversity.....just like the Living Room here.

Gee George, have you found anything interesting while boxing things up?

Well (shh...don't tell BK!), while moving boxes that have been in my extra bedroom since before I moved here (two and a half years ago), I found my autographed copy of "Benjamin Kritzer!" ::) I've had "Kritzerland" and "Kritzer Time" out on my shelf wondering where the first book is, but it had been stored in a box and I didn't remember which one.  No wonder, because that particular box turned out to be at the back of my room, behind all the other boxes, at the bottom of the stack of boxes.  All three now reunited and next to my autographed copy of "Rewind." ;D

I remember that movie 14 Hours. I saw that movie when I was a kid. Saw it on TV like a morning matinee. I always like that movie. I don't think I had ever seen it since. I might get a kick out.
But if memory serves wasn't Jeffrey Hunter in the movie as the jumper or did he play another role?

Jeffrey Hunter plays an onlooker who falls for another onlooker, Debra Paget.  The man on the ledge is Richard Basehart.

I shall shortly be on my way to the Wood of Holly to lunch - where I do not know, oh, no, I do not know AT THIS TIME.

By the time I get there or by the time I get to Phoenix I'll know.

I've jogged and have been slaving over a rewrite for a Brain scene.  I've got the scene part done and now I'm trying to finish the lyric for the replacement song.  That is slow going, but I'm getting there.  It's much more of a musicalized scene now and I'm much happier with it and am happy that faux 50s number is gone.

Good vibes to all and one and one and all.  Today is a day of trying to get rid of stuff-- not easy for me.  BUT I am making some progress.

I'm glad inspiration has struck and not lightning.

I'm off to see what else I can get rid of, but I'll check back later.

I remember THE FOURTEEN HOURS also from when it would play on Dialing for Dollars or some other weekday afternoon movietime...I loved when I was a kid...so dramatic and all...but I caught it on TV just a year ago or so and it seemed, well, wildly overacted to the point that I could barely sit through it.

On the flip side, I am right this moment watching another favorite from my childhood..TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY! I love Tony Martin and it is interesting to see Janet Leigh with some meat on her bones! She looks good! And two of my interviewees..Anne Kimbell and Angela Stevens show up in tiny roles along with lovely Joi Lansing...and oh, that Tony Martin!!!

I saw TWO TICKETS TO BROADWAY a few weeks ago having never seen the entier things before. It stuck me as Howard Hughes deciding he wanted an MGM musical at his studio, and since he didn't have any musical talent to compare to the artists at MGM, he just borrowed what he needed from them. Not a great musical but a fascinating look at what happened to talent when it wasn't at a studio that nurtured and protected it.

I began my afternoon of viewing with another WILD WILD WEST episode. The leading villain looked so familiar, but I couldn't quite place him. At first I thought it was Keith Michell, but I knew that it wasn't. Couldn't wait for the credits to come up to learn it was Don Francks of FINIAN'S RAINBOW fame. Yvonne Craig was the femme fatale, and Richard Jaeckel was the evil second in command. Really enjoyed this episode about a band of super-assassins.

Then I put in THE AVIATOR. I didn't see anything wrong with the transfer. I wonder if critics of the DVD realized that Scorsese's color scheme for the first 1/3 of the movie was deliberately meant to resemble the old Kodachrome color of early color photo photography. After Hughes crashes in the beet field, the color transforms into the lush three-strip Technicolor look of the rest of the picture.

I was still terribly bothered by the horribly sloppy time continuity problems with Hughes' involvement with Hepburn and other Hollywood beauties, and I still insist Cate Blanchette just wasn't beautiful enough to be Katharine Hepburn despite her accurate vocal inflections and carriage.

A phone call interrupted my screening, so I still have about 40 minutes more of the movie to watch.

I finished boxing up most of my musicals on CD (I say "most" because my niece has a couple).  I have eight boxes...of just musicals! ;D

I'll probably have just as many boxes of all my other CDs.  Then, it's on to my DVDs.  After that, I'll take them to the storage unit and that'll be it for today.

My mom is making dinner tonight (I don't know what), and I have to drive my niece.  But that's not until 6:00 or so, so I've still got time.

Yup!  Yesterday I drove to Sioux Falls, went to the ticket counter and within about 3 minutes had the ticket.  We're on different airlines but I think American and United are both at the same terminal at LaGuardia.  I've got it arranged so if everything is on time. I arrive 8 minutes before DR jhvw and on the return his plane leaves 20 minutes before mine. That way we can go to and from the airport together.

Steal the costumes? well, I have to confess to having taken one pair of shoes I had worn for over a hundred performances. I still have them, all these years later. They are now the Ruby Slippers I have onstage, down left, in every performance of Jewish Thighs...

Plus, I took a petticoat. I wanted to buy my wigs and that red dress... never heard of again after that show closed. sigh...

Penny O - Did I tell you I ordered my very own copy of Jewish Thighs on Broadway?  I hadn't realized it was on Amazon until George mentioned having you sign his copy. So I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival

"Sunday, sweet Sunday, with nothing to do......"   Well, not exactly nothing.  DP Kerry and I have both managed to sort through some stuff and put it out to our curb, for our quarterly "solid waste pickup."  That way, the city makes it magically disappear this coming week sometime.

A big welcome to new DR jhvw !!

I'm always fascinated by some of the acronyms (or anagrams, or whatever the hell they are) user-names that folks come up with.  And 2 of the most puzzling at the moment to me are,  Cillaliz , and jhvw .  I guess it is possible that the latter (nephew) maybe drives a small german car, but beyond that I'm stumped.

Oh dear, stuck again between a conundrum and a cul-de-sac !

Happy Birthday Stuart

I miss the Brothers Soloway but appreciate their reasons. Some of us just choose to deal with situations in other ways.

At the time of his departure, I tried to convince dR Stuart he was being overly sensitive and that the post was an attempt at humor.  He didn't buy it.  I still believe he was wrong.

I'm back from A R Gurney's beautiful memory play INDIAN BLOOD.  The cast was excellent, Rebecca sang a refrain of "You'd Be So Nice to Come home To," and I laughed a lot and got a bit teary at the conclusion.  I liked it quite a lot and recommend it to everyone.

Welcome, DR jhvw!  DR Sandra would ask you if you like diet cherry Coke, DR  Jose would ask if you are single, and DR MBarnum is too shy to ask if you are by any chance a bodybuilder?  I'll ask it for him.  I hope your answer is no to all the above.  Otherwise, you'll never get out alive.

Back from lunch and whatnot, must now try to write a bit more, although I'm happy with what I did this morning.

Unlike Tomovoz, I don't appreciate the reasons for Jay's leaving us, nor do I appreciate the fact that he, in fact, never owned up to said reasons in private e-mails with folks.  I think it a sad day when a dear reader allows him or herself to be influenced by a disgruntled person.  The disgruntled person gets over the disgruntlement but the dear reader continues to stay away.

And I'm with elmore re Stuart - take a few days, but come on, no one was trying to be a true anti semite or I would toss them off this board so fast it would make people's heads spin.  I miss them both, but, you know, oh, well.

Cilla, as you mentioned in an earlier post, yes,

American and United are both at the same terminal at LaGuardia.

We're looking forward to Fred's next Sunday and the October bash coming up.

Even though I can't take off work in October to play with you in Chelsea and the Village I think you will have a very good time down here. Check out the Forbes Gallery (5th Avenue and 12th Street) if you get a chance. A nice small and FREE museum with some wonderful old games. The Teddy Roosevelt Birthplace is on 20th Street between 5th Avenue and Broadway. There isn't a lot to it but it's a fun place in which to poke your head(s). Depending on when you're down here there might be a Greenmarket (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in Union Square Park). I know that Ginny wants to go back to Chelsea Market on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. That will provide much fun and amazing food choices.

It's always good to see Deb posting even if it's only for a quick one. Hope you enjoy The Fantasticks on Sunday. We can discuss it at Fred's, between eating the sumptuous food and playing with the delightful Corgi dogs. The Corgi is the official dog of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. I wonder if that will change when/if Charles becomes King or when William takes over.

Enough babbling. I can do this tomorrow morning as I eat my oatmeal with peaches and raisins.

Not to forget, we are also very excited about the arrival of Mr. Tom Guest and his ever lovin' Colin!

Mom's "seizures' have ended.... I picked up the material that accompanying the drugs prescribed to her and read  side effects may include... muscle spasms, disorientation, dizziness, severe abdominal pain, headaches, weakness,  nausea.... in short all the problems that have been plaguing her since she left the hospital the first time... they gave her CAT scans , numerous MRI's, isolated her and not one of the bloody doctors took the precaution of checking into the side effects of the latest wonder drug that their pharamceutical rep  was hawking!?

So she stopped taking the medicine and she is getting better

still very weak and in pain from the shingles but seizure free

We didn,t because my Mom just wasn't up to it.  I brought them a little cake and gift certificates to the local Ruby Tuesdays which my mom is partial to.  It is only a couple of miles up the road and they do ''curbside takeout"  and they gave me a menu so mom can choose what she likes, order it and dad can go and pick it up.

Well, given the circumstances, that was very appropriate and I'm sure they appreciated it.  I'm glad you had the tenacity to intervene in your Mom's treatment, too, and that she's on the road to recovery.

For my wedding I had a hoop skirt....I had always wanted to wear one ever since I saw Gone with the Wind when I was 9.

I loved it! That was back when JC Penney still had a in-store Bridal Department but oh my how much less expensive than those pricey Bridal Shoppes with their stuck up assistants.

Yeah, I'm thinking that's the secret of happiness: figure out stuff you love to do, then get someone to pay you to do it. Love teaching the workshops. Always did. The captive audience, in rapt attention... not expecting to actually be entertained... the surprise and shock that it's FUNNY stuff... the incredulity when they realize EVERYONE is just making it up, and they can too...

Richard and I arrive on Monday, October 2; Jane arrives on Tuesday or Wednesday (I think); and Cillaliz and her nephew late Wednesday afternoon.  We're all staying until the weekend, I think.  Richard and I fly out late Sunday afternoon.  Is MBarnum coming in for this trip?

COmpleted THE AVIATOR. I do love the sequence with Hughes pulling himself together and making his case at the hearings. A triumphant moment for him, and important for the viewer knowing as we do how sadly he ended up.

Next came THANK YOU, MR. MOTO. I didn't like it as much as the first MOTO, and I didn't think the transfer was quite as good for this one too - grainier and not quite as sharp.

Also, the movie really wasn't much of a mystery, more of a crime drama.

I had the DVR set to record DEADWOOD while I watched GREY'S ANATOMY, but ABC showed the pilot tonight, and I had no interest in seeing it again so soon after just seeing it when it was shown on Thursday night about a month ago. Disappointing.

So, I flipped back to DEADWOOD, stopped the DVR from recording it, and sat riveted by the tense doings on this episode. Oh, the upcoming face-off between Hurst's factions against the rest of the camp has really built uip tension to the breaking point. It has been hard for me to sit still due to the escalating violence going on for these past few weeks.

Terrific drama.

ENTOURAGE had some fun sequences with Martin Landau playing a fabled Hollywood producer who lives with his memories, but who pulls out of his hat a surprise script that interests our main character. Nice episode.

RENO 911 had some good laughs tonight. My favorite sequence involved a singing preacher who's actually a dope dealer. SOme of the tunes did have me laughing.

And since SOUTH PARK was repeating the Mel Gibson-PASSION OF THE CHRIST episode "The Passion of the Jew" which I never saw, I watched it. Very wicked jabs at Mel Gibson that made me laugh a lot.

The DVR is recording the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie MR & MRS. SMITH tonight on HBO-HD, so I'll probably watch that tomorrow. I didn't see it at the theater nor did I rent/buy the DVD. Should be interesting to finally get to see it.

My name is my initials and yes, I drive a small german car. It's my baby. A 76 gold beetle.

What a coinkydink!  I used to have a '76 orange Super Beetle!  I loved that car, but it died a slow death. :'( Fortunately, I wasn't stuck somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.  It just wouldn't start up anymore.

My amusement tonight....

STrategy of war on a soap message boards...

One fanbase against several others....

Funny one group plays and acts the fools only to be outwitted by the quieter groups. Quite funny at times.... especially when they get in a corner and they can't get out.

The show is about a fictional Reno, Nevada police squad.  It's like a camera crew is following them everywhere and they're incredibly stupid and incompetent.  Also, the script is improvised.  They have an outline of what should happen, but their actual dialog is all improvised.  It's one of the few improvised shows that I think is very good.

DR Laura, In you avvie, do you still have Joshie?

Joshie was a foster kitten from the pound a few years back. He was feral when we got him, and we tamed him. He decided, however, that he did not wish to be adopted and misbehaved at Petsmart. They called me to come get him, and he's been here ever since. He is my sweetheart.

DR Sandra's avatar, Sasha, had a similar story. She came to us semi-feral with a litter of kittens. The kittens were adopted, but Sasha decided she did not wish to be adopted. She did not misbehave, but hid in her cage at the pet store, so no one would look at her.
