Well, you've read the notes, went the notes well, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're watching a Danish moovie and can't be bothered.

I think the Bedights were a 4th Century religious group in outer Mongolia.  They grew fuschias and drank the nectar from the blossoms.

Yes, TCB mentioned that he loved it.  It's still the red X for me.  Very strange, indeed!  Every other post with a picture attached is fine.  No problem with anybody elses.  Very, very strange.

Very, very, very [that's three (or six, depending on your counting ;)) verys] strange.

I'll give the media report when I get to work.  I must now take out my contact lenses, brush my teeth and go to bed.  I also have to empty the garbage, but I can do that in the morning.  It's not picked up until after I leave.  Today is also recycling, but I don't really have very much to recycle, so I'll wait until the next pick-up in two weeks.

Good night!

I'm about to watch Mr. TCB's PSA.

I have some CDs here at the office including:

A Leap of Faith, Miss Prince's live cabaret act recorded at Joe's Pub.

Isn't It Romantic, an oldie but goodie (IMHO) from Michael Feinstein.

Songs for My Father, another live act from Heather MacRae recorded on closing night at the legendary 88s in the Village.

A Wrinkle in Swingtime, a great album of lesser-known standards performed by Elena Bennett and orchestrated and conducted by Fred Barton of Miss Gulch fame.

The Story Goes On, Miss Liz Callaway's great CD produced by Mr. BK.

Barbara Cook at Carnegie Hall - self-explanatory.

Nothing in the VCR/DVD player. I'll be at the office tomorrow until about 3pm. We have no plans for Saturday night.

We have no plans for Sunday during the day. A time to relax. Then at 6pm Magic Time. We get to play with two friendly corgies and we get to meet and greet our HHW friends and eat wonderful food prepared by the hottest chef on the East Coast, Mr. Skip Kennon. I'm sure someone will have a camera to record this happy even.

And the word of the day is: BEDIGHT!
It's a verb, so I'm changing the tense here...

Illiana knew she would win the "Best Wedding Cake" contest if she worked on her presentation a BIT, HEDGING her chances by chosing a lovely lace runner for the table and BEDIGHTING it with candles and flowers.  Sadly, two of the judges were allergic to pollens and perfumes.

TOD:

Yesterday, I indulged in some shopping!!!

Books:
The Food of France, by Waverly Root.  It's considered a classic on the subject.

Fork It Over, by Alan Richman, who is a pompous jerk but writes well.

CDs:
Sunday in the Park with George, the 2006 London Cast Recording.  Der B and I played this on our way home.  We both enjoyed it a lot.  For a reduced orchestration, which had us concerned, it held up quite well.

By Request, by Wendy Carlos.  Originally released in 1975, back when I was in college and Wendy was still known as Walter, this is a mixed bag, ranging from her early electronic experiments to a variation and fantasy on a theme by Elgar titled "Pompous Circumstances," a long piece that was actually banned in Britain!  It also has the craziest instrumental rendition of "What's New Pussycat" that I've ever heard, the craziest vocal version of course being that of Jason Graae.

And...

DVD:
Chuck Jones - Extremes and Inbetweens.  I don't know if this is a bio or an interview or what.  It originally was broadcast on PBS as part of Great Performances, and includes Jones himself commenting on his work.  Jones is a hero of mine, and I look forward to watching it.

I've a new game:

Take a title, and change the circumstances about the author along with a slight change in the title.

For example: Ann Rand gets drunk = Atlas Chugged.

Andrew Lloyd Webber en gelee = Aspics of Love.

I'm sleeping late a lot these days!  Good morning, all!  I was up at 6:30 when the alarm went off, then went back to bed.  I had this strange dream about copying music from the original orchestra score for "Easter Parade" from the AS THOUSANDS CHEER score.  Somehow, my dad was in the dream as well, and there was this discussion about the whole number or only sections of it.  It makes no sense now that I'm awake.

I've got some computer work on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER today, as well as a trip to my doctor who lanced the abscess.  I screwed up my appointment date and missed seeing him for dismissal before I returned to Ohio.  So, today, he'll check out his work and, hopefully, release me.

DR td, the responsibility for being a lifeline is huge.  I was flattered when Charlie asked me in 2001; I was one of four froiends he chose.  On the day he was on the show, he had a medical question he couldn't answer so he used his lifeline in Boston, a doctor.  My memory is that he won close to $100,000, and he was smart enough to quit when a question he was unsure of came up that he knew I could answer and he couldn't use my help.  The question: who was Nora Charles of THE THIN MAN based on?  Tallulah Bankhead? Lillian Hellman? Dorothy Parker?

After he won, he decided to do something for and with each of his lifelines.  He took me to see THE PRODUCERS and dinner.  I called the conductor for house seats and we had a great evening out.  He used the money to pay off his college loans, put some in savings, and took a nice vacation.

TOD:
CD:  Babes in Toyland, The Lady of the Slipper, Guy Haines, The Wiz (OBC)
DVD:  several operas, Jeeves & Wooster complete season 1

I'll have to teach Rodzinski how to give Walty his pill.  It's much easier now that I drop it into his mouth with a piece of pounce.  His love of pounce is stronger than his hatred of the pill.  I no longer have to worry about him cheeking then then spitting it out later.

I am so lucky that Callie is good about her pills.  I hold her like a baby on her back and open her mouth and put it way back on her tongue and she swallows it without really thinking about it.  Sometimes she gives me this surprised look like "What on earth was that???"

My other cats are not nearly as cooperative.

Sounds like the Pounce was a great idea for Walty

Dear Esteemed, sinewy, and rippled BK --

I'm glad things are going well on so many different projects for you!  I'm afraid I also couldn't see the "Cracked" cover, but only the little white square with the red X in the center.  Ah, technology.

Since you were so unfairly flummoxed out of your yummy meal last night (damn them!), I thought I'd post this little picture of a wonderful meal with your good self, DR Kerry, and DR Laura a couple of years ago at Dan Tana's wonderful restaurant!  It was an evening of great fun.

No, DR Ben, it does not.  I ddn't know there was a revival planned!  I bought on the street a couple of years ago a piano/conductor score for the show that had been used on Broadway by one of it's conductors.  I wanted to follow the score with the recording.

This is my last day to get a few things done and details taken care of, before leaving on my trip tomorrow.  DR Kerry has volunteered to drive me to the airport at 4:45 AM tomorow ..... UGH!

I shall miss reading all of BK's wonderful columns and the sparkling posts whilst I'm gone, but I can't take a laptop with me, and I'm not sure of the "high tech" level of some of the hotels I'll be in while in the UK.

As I used to say to DRs (when I was going to be gone for awhile) -  "While you're here in BK's Living Room, play nice, don't fight, leave a few ham chunks for the next person, and don't pee on the floor."

You don't want to anger She of the Evil Eye !

I just wanted to say thanks for everyone wishing me a happy b'day. It sure says alot when you people have hardly met me but give me such thanks. Got a big day planned with dinner with my parents and twin brother, then off to an afternoon/evening of drinking around the various haunts in this little town. Should be a blast though, thanks again!

Big Brother 7 SPOILER

In reverse order from last night's events:

--James won POV today.
--George nominated James and Erika for Sunday's eviction (this is a double-eviction week)
--George won HOH, besting Danielle in a final question.---Marcellas was evicted.
--Mike Boogie declined to use the Coup D'Etat for this particular eviction ceremony.
--Julie Chen informed Mike Boogie he won the Coup D'Etat and told him he has the power to overturn the HOH and his/her nominations only once at one of the next three eviction ceremonies.  Prior to the live vote, Julie will give him the chance to use his power, at which time he nullifies the existing nominations and names two replacement eviction candidates which will immediately be voted upon by the eligible houseguests.

Last night's America's Got Talent" competition -- DREADFUL television.

Just imagine Regis Philbin singing "There's No Business Like Show Business" .  He can't sing.  The music was, naturally, over-orchestrated to compensate for his non-singing talent (as IF...).

And the winner....big voice, little control....but maybe...one day...a new Garland or Merman...!!!

Rather...one of my co-workers is wearing me down really fast...

She's worse than Kayne's chatty-Cathy model from two weeks ago...yak yak yak yak yak yak yak yak...and absolutely nothing of interest to me whatsoever.

My gradeschool lunch lady had one of those cool AMC Matadors. Great looking car. The back was really cool with these round lights. Once in my first year in NYC, I saw one of those parked on Park Ave. It was white and looked absolutely brand new. I just stared at it for awhile.

Something about which I am really jazzed:

34 years ago, in a High Fidelity Magazine article on film music and a side story on the collecting of film music soundtracks, composer Elmer Bernstein (The Ten Commandments, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Magnificent Seven, et. al.) announced he would begin recording much-wanted/requested film scores for his "Film Score Collection" club.  Membership would require you to buy two LPs a year ($8 plus s/h).

Bernstein recorded 13 albums, and released a 14th of a score by Jerry Fielding.  Among the Bernstein-conducted titles were "Helen of Troy," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", "Thief of Baghdad" and "Wuthering Heights."  Before his death, Bernstein returned to the podium on a new recording initiative, and this time he recorded his most-requested score, "Kings of the Sun."  That recording makes its debut in this boxed set (as FMC-15) and easily lives up to the standards Bernstein instilled in his Film Music Collection some 30 years ago.

While the recordings were good (some even superb), the pressings were a bit on the noisy side.

This past week, however, 34 years after that announcement, these recordings -- except for the Jerry Fielding score (which BK issued on one of his 3 Jerry Fielding CD albums on Bay Cities) -- made their debut on CD in a stunning boxed set.  The Bernstein-conducted material was beautifully remastered and the results are, to my ears, startlingly good.  I've been mesmerized by the sound quality and by the extraordinary detail Bernstein captured in the recordings.

At any rate...it's a modern blast from a distant past.  I can't say that anything has pleased me as much in recent years as this boxed set of CDs.

Could not see the Cracked image. But I didn't get a red X, but rather a Blue question mark. The mystery continues.

Incidentally, CRACKED has just relaunched. I met the guy who bought the rights a few months ago. They have had a humor website for awhile under the CRACKED banner, and now the mag is back, but it is more like a lampoon of a STUFF or FHM magazine. Cartoons are reduced if not eliminated altogether.

The key to the Coup D'Etat is that you can't nominate the HOH or the winner of the POV. So he couldn't have nominated Janelle or Danielle last night. I'm not surprised he's waiting

I am very disappointed that james won the veto. Even more disappoined that janelle was not drawn to play. I would have really liked to see what mike would have done if he had the opportunity to get rid of james or janelle or danielle. Now we will never know. Bummer.

I am headed off to read canoe now. But i saw last night George promised janelle and howie he would not nom them. He was very mad at danielle (which surprised me since i thought they were close).  But i'm sure by now he is not mad at her anymore.  HE is getting a lot of pressure to nominate janelle.  I hope he doesn't. I'm thinking he may not, because he kept him safe all those times.

Last night when Sandi (House Committee Co-Chair) and I arrived to do our ticket/cleaning duties....we discovered that two cases of popcorn boxes, a 50 lb bag of popcorn,  and 40 rolls of toilet paper were missing.

My guess is a local soccer or church softball league  person who is performing in SEUSSICAL decided he/she would save some money on supplies.....

Inexplicable to me how it was done....  It is my opinion that the great PCPH TP Snatch of 2006 will remain a mystery forever.

Why don't you each see something?  You could see JEAN BRODIE and he could see HAIRSPRAY or something else?  No offense, but I'm sure the tour will have a smaller orchestra than Broadway and I have no idea who's playing Edna on tour or on Broadway.

Then you could meet up after, compare notes and make him feel jealous he didn't see what you saw and vice versa!

Lillian Hellman is the answer.  Dashiell Hammett based Nora Charles on his long-term amourette.  Her writing about Hammett in PENTIMENTO or AN UNFINISHED WOMAN (title?) is quite moving and wonderful.

How could I ever forget! My Grade School Lunch lady was MOM, and lunch was toted to school in a paper bag. In later school years, the Lunch Lady tried to beg-off by providing coin-of-the realm with which to purhase the Cafeteria swill, but I prefered the home-prepared sandwiches, thank-you very much!

Lunch was usually Salami & Tomato on Rye, Liverwurst and Onion on Rye, Tuna Fish Salad on whole wheat, or Egg Salad on white (Lebanon Balogna of Rye was also offered). Speaking of which - I think I'll raid the ice box for some Lebanon Bologna for lunch!

This is from an email my Dad sent me today....lol,

Quote
Two major events here:
     1. The trees around the library have about 40 parakeets & cockatoos flying around in them. They escaped from a box when being moved from a pet shop.

    2. Latest word is that a St. Bernard will be the ringbearer at (a friend of the family's) wedding. (I'm taking my camera).

LOL, Jrand - almost sounds like a chapter from A Short History of a Small Place (I think that's the title)

I certainly remember mine - Mrs. Culp.

And we had those fabulous yeast rolls in elementary, junion, and senior high. It must have been a city-wide recipe.

Next came FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. I haven't watched this movie in many, many years, certainly not since getting the larger screen TV, so I was curious how the transfer would look after all this time.

Surprisingly good! It's an old MGM transfer though it is anamorphic, and about 90% of it looks just fine. Sharp with very good color. But there was some print damage particular during Leonard Frye's scenes and song, and grain and some speckles did pop up here and there.

Still, looked better than I was expecting and the sound was really lush and full. No wonder this won an Oscar for Best Sound.

Of course, there are new episodes of MONK and PSYCH tonight I'll be watching, and I still have about 35 minutes of FIDDLER to watch. It's a long film, and I was interrupted during its viewing having to take care of some household duties.

ABOUT THAT TRIP YESTERDAY...

We left Rehoboth a little later than originally planned (which is what usually happens), stopping for gas, air for the car's tires, and coffee and donuts.

Once we were officially on our way, and after listening to the news and talking heads for a little while, I put the Short/Prince revival of Little Me into the car's CD player.  Fun disc!  After, we listened to about half of the OCR of Once Upon a Mattress.  Then we were in the City of Brotherly Love.

Our first stop was for lunch at Jack's Firehouse (http://jacksfirehouse.com/).  That's the restaurant owned by chef Jack McDavid.  Wanna see what it looks like from the outside?

Yep, it used to be an actual, working firehouse.  Inside, the original wood walls, floors, and ceiling are still there.

For lunch, I went a la carte, while der Brucer had the Chef's Choice.  We aren't really sure if Chef Jack was there, but the choices all met der Brucer's approval, while I was quite happy with my own selections.

For example:
In the foreground is the chilled melon soup I enjoyed.  It was a smooth puree of honeydew, I think, sparked up with some ginger, mint, and yogurt.

The plate in the middle is what was left of the homemade biscuits and homemade strawberry jam that was given to us while we made our menu decisions.

As for the plate in the rear...

Der Brucer really enjoyed the BBQ trio of a pork rib, pulled pork (tangy with a North Carolina vinegar sauce) and beef brisket.  It's something he doesn't get here at home.

Ah, the entrees!

Here is where I'm glad I didn't go for the Chef's Choice.  At top, der B's entree is a talapia fillet, swimming in a pool of pureed asparagus.  I am not fond of asparagus.  I am in no way fond of asparagus.  There is no way I will go near asparagus.  This was, once again, the sort of dish der B does not get at home.  He was quite pleased.

I was very happy with my pair of crab cakes, which were moist and meaty.  That yellowish blob towards the top of my plate was the "hot lava," a mayonnaise sparked with a healthy addition of chilis.  Very yummer.

The middle plate includes garlicy smashed red potatoes, broccoli, and roasted eggplant.

and finally...
Here's an already well-filled der Brucer with dessert!

There was a slice of triple-layered chocolate cake, a wedge of lemon cheesecake (with chocolate cookie crust), and a couple of brownie triangles.

My own dessert was another (larger) wedge of the cheesecake.  It was delish!

After our lunch, we decided to walk to the Art Museum of Philadelphia.  The walk did us both a lot of good, as it settled our stomachs and got us in the mood for being inside the museum.

We entered the museum via the steps made famous by the Rocky movies.  From what I've heard, there used to be a statue of Rocky at the top of the steps.  From what I've heard, it has been taken down by order of the current mayor.  "This is a place for art, not some movie prop," is what he has reputedly said.

I learned something about myself at the museum.  I have little or no interest in art that pre-dates the 19th century.  The Impressionists and beyond are fascinating to me, but those from earlier times carry no resonance.  If there is something to the theory of reincarnation, my hunch is that mine is a relatively recent soul.

From there, we went on the Rodin Museum, hence my new avatar.  That would have turned out better if the famous statue had been lower to the ground, or if I had been taller... no, let's not even think about that.

Rodin really had a thing for sculpting naked men, didn't he!

Der Brucer is puzzled by how the bronze casts were made.  That's something we're going to have to research.

Also, has anyone noticed how few sculptors there are from the modern age that are known by practically all by name?  There's Rodin.  There's Calder.  There's not too many others.

How could I ever forget! My Grade School Lunch lady was MOM, and lunch was toted to school in a paper bag. In later school years, the Lunch Lady tried to beg-off by providing coin-of-the realm with which to purhase the Cafeteria swill, but I prefered the home-prepared sandwiches, thank-you very much!

der Brucer

Lunch was usually Salami & Tomato on Rye, Liverwurst and Onion on Rye, Tuna Fish Salad on whole wheat, or Egg Salad on white (Lebanon Balogna of Rye was also offered). Speaking of which - I think I'll raid the ice box for some Lebanon Bologna for lunch!

My dad made my lunches through my whole school career. But we had lunch ladies at school who sold milk and hot lunches and kept everyone in line.

Actually the only time I ever got paddled at school, which still happened in Indiana during my time there, was because I started a sort of mini-riot in the lunchroom. I had a singing group called The Hippies, and we sang TV show themes and whatnot. Then a rival group started, "The Head Band," which is fine, but they did all our material. So it got out of hand for a few minutes.

Der Brucer had the very good idea of going downtown via the Phlash, one of the local busses.  This is a sort of trolly that runs along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, supposedly every twelve minutes.

Well, while there I spotted signs for an exhibit they were holding on animation (featuring the Cartoon Network's stable of characters).  On impulse we went in for an inspection.  It was a fairly good exhibit, very interactive, perhaps a little too reading-heavy for a nine-year-old like the older grandlad.

Back out we went, to catch that Phlash.

Every twelve minutes?  We waited a half hour!

Still, it cost just a dollar, and got us downtown, where I raided the local Tower Records and Borders Bookstore, while der B rested a bit.  The we walked over to Camac Street (which is more of an alley in modern terms), to the Tavern on Camac, where we had dinner.

No pictures.  It wasn't that fancy a restaurant.

We shared a plate of pate, which was more a mound of pureed calves and chicken livers (lots of purees on the day's plates), surprisingly better than I had expected.  Der Brucer dined on roasted duck, I on chicken breast stuffed with crab imperial with a lobster cream sauce.

We decided enough was enough, and passed on dessert.  But we went upstairs, where a woman named Paula was playing the piano and singing with a voice patinaed with years of cigarettes.  She was a jolly sort, perhaps plagued with too many requests for dull standards.  ("Like 'People,'" der B joked.  "Oh, yes!" they replied quite seriously.)  I rescued her somewhat by requesting songs like "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," stuff that was a little outside their repetoire but well within hers.

Too soon, we had to be heading home.  I think der Brucer now wishes he hadn't insisted that we walk back to the car, more blocks that he is used to covering by far.  That, and we couldn't have anticipated a blockage in Christiana, roadwork that required the entire four lanes of highway be diverted.  That slowed our progress by quite a bit.

But it had been a wonderful day for us both.

Julie Andrews took a gamble for a worthy cause with the release of her latest children’s book, “The Great American Mousical,” co-authored with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton (HarperCollins Publishers, May 2006).  In conjunction with the publication, she has recorded a brand new song entitled – appropriately - “The Show Must Go On”.

"The Show Must Go On" marks one of the few times Julie has sung professionally since throat surgery robbed her of her singing voice nearly a decade ago. The song was created to enhance reader experience of the book The Great American Mousical and to accompany the new web-game that features the ‘Mousical’ characters. A portion of the sales proceeds from both the book and the song are being donated to Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS.

Download your own personal copy of the song - and benefit a great cause in the process. You can play it on your iPod, use it as a ringtone... even make multiple purchases and send them as gifts to friends and family!

Click here to read more about the story behind the song ...

Today to get the public to attend a picture show,
It's not enough to advertise a famous star they know.
If you want to get the crowds to come around
You've gotta have glorious Technicolor,
Breathtaking CinemaScope and
Stereophonic sound.

If Zanuck's latest picture were the good old-fashioned kind,
There'd be no one in front to look at Marilyn's behind.
If you want to hear applauding hands resound
You've gotta have glorious Technicolor,
Breathtaking CinemaScope and
Stereophonic sound.

The customers don't like to see
The groom embrace the bride
Unless her lips are scarlet
And her bosom's five feet wide.
You've gotta have glorious Technicolor,

I was looking throught the song list on the Sondheim CD.

1) I am glad to see that Farewell has finally been recorded. I saw a production in the early 80's that included it. I always liked it. And now I am glad to see it has been finally be waxed.

2) Other than Guy Haines I do not recognize any of the other performers/

I have been listening to the clips and I like what I hear so far.

Dear Esteemed BK --

When I saw the new cover art for your book the 4th or 5th time, a name popped in my mind.  For years, the head of the Greyhound / Dial Corp. here in Phoenix was a man names John Teets.

Yes, you see where this is going.........

After looking at the "tomato" on the cover artwork, I thought there should have been a "bad girl" that worked in the office at "McHale's Navy," and her name should have been ' Perky Teets."

DR MUSIC GUY - I think Perky Teets was under contract to RKO in the late 1940's and even to Universal-International but didn't get the breaks.  And then of course in the mid 50's her appeal began to sag.

Does anyone know if we'll FINALLY get to see Mr Haines' face one day?!?

When BK started the record label with which he is no longer affiliated, they used to have weekly contests on the website.  The very first contest (if I remember correctly...IIRC in Internet lingo) was to identify the baby pictures of their recording artists (carry-overs from Varèse Sarabande).  One of them was for Guy Haines and his cute little baby face was showing!  At the time, I actually did download the picture, but a couple of years ago, my computer crashed and I lost EVERYTHING on it...including Guy Haines' baby picture (also, the website has changed so much that it's no longer there, either). :( But at one point, it was available for all the world to see. :D

Francois - Is that another lyric I've misheard on the Thoroughly Modern Millie soundtrack?  I thought Julie Andrews was singing "You sure have started something," but  "You should have starred in something" seems much better.

But then, count me among those who thought Ms. Andrews was saying "tapioca puh-pudding" when it was really "tapioca for pudding."

Watched some fun things on TV tonight.

Finished FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. I have to say the last 40 minutes or so does have some transfer issues with softness and artifacts.

So, overall, I'd say this is a film that could do with a thorough restoration. It's not in the terrible shape that MY FAIR LADY was in before it was rescued, but there are definite problems if the present DVD is the best we have now.
