Title: THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?
Post by: bk on August 19, 2006, 12:25:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that the notes came before either the chicken or the egg, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - the cows definitely came after the notes, before the chicken, and may have arrived with the egg.

I'm watching the video clips of "Simply Sondheim (http://www.kritzerland.com/gallery.html)" and it's pretty cool that they're clips of whole songs!  Too bad a DVD can't be released.

Good Morning Woody.

I'm about to tackle the MacArthur Foundation. Perhaps they will give me a Genius Grant for working on their foundation grant list.

I will be pre-ordering the Simply Sondheim CD as well.

And now, off to work.

That cover has sparked a memory.

There was a routine Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews recorded, apparently for the breaks at their Carnegie Hall performance (while costumes and sets were being changed).  Apparently, Carol had bought one of those new Living Bras, and was gushing to Julie about how wonderful it was, going on and on about "Living Bra" this and "Living Bra" that, ad nauseum.  But finally Carol admitted "There's just one thing that bothers me about this living bra."

"What's that?" Julie asked politely.

"What am I supposed to feed it?"

*ba-dum-dum*

As Hillary would find OUT, A FUSS in a FASTUOUS manner would be as impressive to US AS TOFU sculpted into the visage of Ann Coulter.

Good morning, all!  I just learned the Region 1 DVD of OH, WHAT A LOVELY WAR! will be released in November, so I am a very happy camper.  Now, if we can just get releases of several more films I want, such as THE UNINVITED, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, and Bob Hope's THE CAT AND THE CANARY, I'd be really happy!

And if DR MBarnum would stop spending his money on $1 DVDs and head east, perhaps he and I could shop for a non-regional DVD player.

I have a quiet day planned at the NYPL Theatre Collection and the recording office.  Official work on the second volume of the BABES IN TOYLAND score has begun.  Volume One, the full score to the 1903 "extravaganza" BABES IN TOYLAND, including all music written for the show between 1903 and 1905, is essentially finished, except for some finishing work in November, a few score edits from Mr Skip Kennon, and some libretto revisions.  The vocal score will be completed at the same time.

This second volume will be all the compositions based on the 1903 theatre score, including a concert overture for the Herbert Concert Orchestra, the new songs for the German version SPIELLAND, a 1923 revue sketch, and the stock dance and palm court orchestral arrangements.  The "Waltzes from BABES IN TOYLAND" reminds me a lot in shape and design of the waltzes from the Strauss operettas:  the "Treasure Waltz" from THE GYPSY BARON, "Lagoon Waltz" from A NIGHT IN VENICE, and "Roses from the South" from THE QUEEN'S LACE HANDKERCHIEF.

And so much for today's music history lesson.  I heard a malaprop on JUDGE JOE BROWN yesterday:  a lady was being sued by a hotel staff masseuse for canceling payment on a check.  The defendant's excuse was that she had been greatly disturbed by the masseuse's profound language during the massage.

Great book cover, BK!  Sure you can use it without get copyright issues?

My favourite malapropisms are usually someone botching song lyrics.  My favourite is a firend of mine who thought the lyric to Windy by the Association went:  "And Windy has storky eyes" instead of "stormy eyes".

One of my favorite Archie Bunkerisms was when he said he was standing a certain way and couldn't see the scene of an incident, and capped it with "Position is nine-tenths of the law."

BIG BROTHER 7 SPOILER

Things are moving too fast in the BB7 house.

Already there has been another eviction, another HOH competition and a new HOH.

Howie is gone off to sequester (he and Marcellas will be alone for several days!!! The mind boggles, actually, given Howie's "attraction" to Beau last season.  Marcellas, though, is decidedly too mature for Howie).

Mike, who already holds the Coup d'Etat power, is the new HOH.  His primary target appears to be Janelle, with Chicken George a likely co-nominee.

The real question is:  When will Chilltown turn against Danielle and James?

Let us know what you think of said DVD.

RE copyright image issues - happily, these early paperback cover images were never copyrighted, which is why you see them reproduced in book after book without credit.  I did as much searching as possible and while that cover is somewhat known among fans (it's from a 1950 Avon paperback), the artist is never credited, which means people don't know who it is (other frequently reprinted covers acknowledge the artists when they're known).  Avon paperbacks are out of business for many years and no one cares anyway.

Back from taking the manuscript to the proofreader.  Anyone been getting "too many connections" - I got an e-mail from Pogue saying he was getting that message, but I got on just fine.

This day has just flown by so far - I haven't even jogged yet, and then I have to go to a pre-show gathering at the Alex and I'm wishing I hadn't accepted the invite.

Quite enjoyed SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON all over again, and I really marvel at the restoration work done on the movie. I had taped that one off TV many years ago, and the TV copy was so scratched and so light that it was practically unviewable. That restored DVD made the movie look brand new.

I've been whiling away my afternoon laughing at Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry as Bertie Wooster and Jeeves.  I'd forgotten how much singing Hugh Laurie does; the second episode's sendup of "Sonny Boy" is quite a hoot.  Great BBC casting in the character roles:  Aunt Agatha is a true Wodehouse battleaxe.

I'm still figuring out this latest el cheapo digital camera.  It's actually a Philips, which kind of cracks me up.

I have been living a week of synchronicity (isn't that supposedly a sign of spiritual development).  To wit:

A week ago, on a total lark, I bought a movie called "What the Bleep Do we Know, Down the Rabbit Hole," because Gabe is interested in string theory and quantum physics and this film seemed to be about that, despite it starring Marlee Matlin.   ;D  So's anyway, we fire it up and lo and behold it was filmed in Portland, plus it has several featured appearances by actors with whom I've worked, notably Michele Mariana, whom I've music directed for many a time, who is playing a character named....Betsy.  Oy.

Then in my work life I am getting to know the new Rector at the church I MD for, who is from SLC, which some of you know I come from.   She was Chaplain at the parochial school I attended for many years, and she also tended to make friends with theater people, so it turns out her close circle either knows me or knows of me.  I've had a slew of emails today from SLC people and it's kind of been like old home week.  One of the Rector's friends was good friends with one of SLC's first Equity actresses who was my next door neighbor for most of my childhood and who was, in a very real sense, my personal Auntie Mame.

For those who might have missed it yesterday, and just because I love it so, here's the cover for the new book

Love the cover!

My mother was confused about the whole short stories thing and thought she heard you say YOU wrote dirty books for money when you lived on Whitley ave....silly mother.

speaking of dirty books I read writers block and am completely stunned at the intricacy of the story. nods and snaps to Bruce Kimmel for writing a mystery novel I didn’t completely loath.

The same day ( yesterday) I also went to se the Illusionist at the Arclight, which was a splendidly wonderful movie. Not ALL of the acting was absolutely wonderful, but it had enough heart that I loved it completely and cannot wait for the DVD. Highly recommended. Half of the Magic Castle members were there and shmooze as I might I could not get an invite.  :'( someday...

Everyone must see my friend Rose Portillos play at the Gene Autry Museum!

THEY SHOOT MEXICANS DON'T THEY?

This acclaimed About Productions' theaterwork inventively explores 1920s Los Angeles when the "Latin" cultural landscape was ripe for export by west coast playwrights and east coast filmmakers. They Shoot Mexicans, Don't They? includes an ensemble cast of actors, dancers, and musicians who, along with original and vintage film, bring to life this early period in Los Angeles history.

The Bay City Rollers' "S-A-TUR-DAY NIGHT!"

Sondheim (http://www.sondheimreview.com/v4n1.htm) wrote a whole show called "Saturday Night" (in the link, scroll down to the sample article).

What can you do on a Saturday night, alone?
Who needs a view on a Saturday night, alone?
If it's a Saturday night and you are single,
You sit with a paper and fight the urge to mingle.

And home is a place where you gotta go back, alone.
Home is a place where the future looks black, alone.
I like the Sunday Times all right, but not in bed.
Alive and alone on a Saturday night is dead!

Yes, it will be.  I'll be taking several pages out of the Michael John La Chiusa songbook for the score.  My goal will be, to quote a certain friend of mine who's sung for MJLC, to make the actors feel "slightly dirty and totally inferior."  In my version, Rose Maria (it is in Mexico, after all) and her husband, Hombre (isn't that Guy in Spanish?), buy a prized ancient Sombrero which, when Hombre puts it on, transforms him into a bit player from a touring company of The Fantasticks named El Diablo.  They do the version with The Rape Song.  Ira Levin is, incredibly, having a little problem with some of these changes, so we need to get his close personal friend BK on the case, don't you think?

Ballet Folklorico is a Mexican Folk Dance troupe - years ago they were totally wonderful... authentic costumes and wonderful choreographies, based on regional dances, some of them quite ancient; and the music was thrilling. Mexican music isn't all Mariachi, you know... I don't know if that's what you're going to see tonight - but if it is and they are anything like what they were, you are in for a treat. But, then, I am an ethnic dance afficionada...

Speaking of Mexico, maybe I've mentioned this before, but does anyone else know the movie VIVA MAX, a comedy based on a Jim Lehrer novel, which starred Peter Ustinov as a Mexican general trying to recapture the Alamo in the late 1960's?  I keep asking people to look at the property as a potential musical, and they either never heard of the movie or they think I'm nuts (mostly the former).

Next came Kevin Spirtas' NIGHT AND DAYS DVD. It's a marvelous act, beautifully put together with terrific songs and interesting patter. Having only recently gotten to know who he is, I was shocked I didn't know his CHORUS LINE work and other credits, so the act was informative as well as entertaining. Kevin did a sensational job with the many changes of tempo and with the amount of movement and dance he worked into the show. Another kudo for him (on a purely personal note): I was so glad to see that his arms and chest were not shaved or waxed.

BK, was the sound level set that high on purpose? Maybe it just reacted that way to my equipment, but I'll caution those who have audio going through a sound system other than their TV sets that you might want to be careful at the level you have your receiver set to before you start the DVD. The audio on my system had to be cranked way down.

Next was TWO FOR THE MONEY. Interesting actors doing their all but I wanted to take the screenwriter (Rene Russo's real-life husband, wasn't it?) and shake him for dear life for turning out such a predictable screenplay. How many sports-related movies have we seen with a hotshot who rises to the top, gets overly cocky, sinks to the bottom, and then has to "find himself" after losing his confidence? By the numbers every step of the way.

And the set-up had the makings of a really interesting story if the writer had simply not taken the well-worn path and instead gone somewhere new. Very disappointing because the makings were there for something good.

I ran Kevin's DVD again and listened to Kevin's and bk's commentary. Again, getting to hear another side of Kevin away from what we had seen in the act was most entertaining.

BTW, I didn't mention it earlier, but "Sometimes a Day Goes By" was my favorite moment in the show. That song has a special place in my heart, too, since I got to sing it in AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND, and Kevin does it beautifully.

I have THE RACKET lined up for watching tomorrow. This is one of the DVDs from the FILM NOIR Vol. 3 boxed set from Warners. Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan are the stars.

Thanks to MattH for his lovely thoughts on Kevin's DVD.  Perhaps they'll prompt some other hainsies/kimlets to finally order it - again, the CD is one thing, seeing Kev is entirely another.  We're very proud of his act.  Funnily, as we say on the commentary track, Kevin didn't know the song Sometimes A Day Goes By - I thought it would be perfect for him, and the minute he heard it he fell head over heels in love with it.

Must now write the notes.
