Last night, I watched a couple of episodes of "Psych" (I really like this show) but after the second episode, I fell asleep!  I can't remember the last time I fell asleep while watching TV.  But at least I did manage to finish the second episode before I zonked out. ;) I must really be tired, so I'm off to bed.

I still have a lot of stuff to box up and put in storage (and it'll take a few more days), but I won't have to do too much, today.  It's my dad's 68th birthday!  I bought him a DVD set of five John Ford movies.  I'm sure he'll love it. :D

We're going to a Chinese buffet restaurant this afternoon. I think it's actually one of my mom's favorite restaurants, but he must like it, too.  He wouldn't want to go if he didn't like it.  I'm surprised that he didn't want to go to dinner at the local casino. ::) Both my parents love to go there!

Long strange night last night was. Just got home a little bit ago. Went out drinking and painting the town brown, partying like rockstars. Do it while your young I keep telling myself. While my dear sweet partner is soundly sleeping I'm kept up going over all that transpired tonight. I know this is going to catch up with me sometime today. Thats what Sundays are for I guess, a day of rest.

Good morning, all!  I had a very strange dream involving PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY, Stephen Sondheim, and Chelsea Music Service!  Oy!

I have to go into the office, continue with the edits, meet Andy Monroe at THE FANTASTICKS matinee, and attend a social gathering at the home of our DR FJL and Skip Kennon.   All in all, I believe it will be a wonderful day.

So, Dear Friend BK, you're going to AIDA?  Time was when this meant only one thing: a night at the opera.  I'm correct in assuming that for you it's a night at a dreadful musical?

Sunday morning greetings!

Yesterday was a long, grueling day in Delaware, OH.  The conference went fine, but the people responsible for keeping the speakers within their timetables did not do their job.  By the time my turn came, in the last time slot of the day, we were 10 minutes from the published adjournment time.  I chucked most of my presentation, passed around the chocolate and my handout, and became the day's "sacrificial lamb."  Oh, well, I'm just glad it's over.

Why DO people go over their allotted time so often when doing public speaking?  Is it just a failure to time what they're going to say?  Or is it about making themselves feel more important?  Or something else?  (I guess I'm asking if it's intentional or just pretty much inadvertent?)

Good day one and all!!

AFter a hellacious week of work of returning students, errant technology, and software snafus, I took Friday night and yesterday to be computer free days to regroup. IT was wonderful. It was a beautiful day yesterday and I drove to Fergus Falls and climbed InspirationPeak and pondered many thoughts. IT was gorgeous and you could see for miles.

This next week is not looking much better but I will survive!

I'm sure most of them think they have the audience enthralled and are worthy of the extra time.....that is rarer than they might imagine....when those in the audience have budgeted their time carefully.  8)

Last evening Fred mentioned  MAD MAX (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065184/plotsummary) as a candidate for a musical.

[Sorry - that's VIVA MAX]

This plot line does seem like a narural:

Quote
When his girlfriend tells him that his men wouldn't follow him to a house of ill repute, Max, a general in the Mexican army decides to perform some great act of heroism. He takes his men over the border into Texas and re-captures the Alamo. This upsets the Texans greatly. The Texas National Guard is sent to retake the mission. Normally this would be easy as Max's men have left all of their ammunition back in Mexico, but the State department insists that no one be killed and so the National Guard also goes in with unloaded weapons.

In the hands of a clever story teller, cross border invasions and unarmed antagonists could provide much fun for today's audiences.

Too bad it's not on DVD. (Of course the limited movie exposure could act to a shows advantage).

der Brucer

I remember waiting in line at TKTS some years back and one matron observed she didn't want to see "The Wiz" because she already saw the movie. A second matron opined that she didn't want to see anything with Blacks (she used another noun) in the cast. I wondered where in Iceland she attended theatre?

Quite sincere - I think properly done it could be a hoot; lots of room for:

Novelty numbers
Fun choreography
Topical asides and current-event references

Plus, the nature of the property permits variable cast sizes, and the score could be constructed for various size pits.

Plus, the world is filled with TCB wanna-bes ready to chew up all the scenery you can supply.

Now here's a souce for a real Comedy (http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_4210074):

Quote
ATLANTA - As John Mark Karr prepared to return to the United States today on a flight to Los Angeles after being expelled from Thailand, a clearer picture of his life is emerging on the East and West coasts.

The man who confessed to killing child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey apparently had another secret up his sleeve in the months before his arrest - he was visiting a surgical center that specializes in sex-change operations.

Staff at the Pratunam Clinic, Thailand's top transgender center, told the New York Daily News Saturday that the 41-year-old was a patient of theirs - but wouldn't say how close he was to getting "sexual reassignment" surgery.

"Yes, he had treatment here," a representative said. "He was our patient. He came a number of times. But we cannot give out details on his treatment as we are ethically bound to keep these things private."

The disclosure came a day after The News reported that Karr sought cosmetic surgeons' help changing his face in Bangkok. Two calls were to the Pratunam Clinic, which sponsors the annual World's Most Beautiful Transsexual competition. It charges $1,600 for the surgery, which could cost $25,000 in the West.

Hmmm...did the clinic spokesman who confirmed that Karr was a patient seeking sexual re-assignment surgery suspect he may have opened the "privacy" bag a bit?

 `A very Disney kiss'  (http://www.presstelegram.com/entertainment/ci_4208767)

Quote
That "Invincible" screen kiss between gridiron hopeful Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg) and bartender Janet Cantwell (Elizabeth Banks)? Pretty spicy for a family sports-themed film, no?
"But it was a very Disney kiss," says Wahlberg. "There was no tongue."

Well, maybe not in what appears on screen. But as it turns out, the kiss, as filmed, was a bit spicier, says "Invincible" director Ericson Core.

"I shot that on the street in one shot with zero coverage, because with great actors you can do that," says Core. "So we did a few takes, found the one we wanted, and we all went home."

OK, so cut to the first test screening where studio executives inform Core that the Wahlberg/Banks buss, as depicted, "is not a Disney kiss." Which presents a bit of a problem, since the scene is in the can and there is no more-chaste version to replace it.

"So we actually did some (computer-generated) work to de-tongue the shot," says Core. "There was a little bit of tongue that has since been removed technologically. You could hear it in the soundtrack and all the rest. We literally had to change that slightly to make it a little more Disney."

And the Oscar nominees for best Bowdlerization go to...

BB7  SPOILERS

Sounds like the houseguests think Janelle cheated during the Veto Comp and are asking the producers to review the tapes or do a new competition.  Apparently it had something to do with dolls and James claims he had one in his hand and Janelle ripped it out of his hands.  If that's the case, it really isn't fair not to do the competition over, they did it when Erika got HOH and it went to Janelle.   It's really looking like the producers are slanting things to favor Janelle.

I am ticked off with the vet.  I called today to see if I could come by to get a refill on Walty's meds.  He has to take them every day so it gets refilled once a month- this is our first refill.  I had imagined that I would call, they would look him up on the computer and then refill it.  Which is how things started off then I was told to call back in the afternoon around 1 or 1:30 and talk to the vet who could refill it.  Okay, so I called back at 2:15 (late I know) and was told that the vet never came in, he can't refill the prescription, and when I mentioned that I wanted to come by anyway to pick up food he said they were closed (!?) but if I ran over with cash he would sell it to me.

I'm going to look for another vet and another source for his food.  I'm really dubious about whether Walty absolutely needs to take this medication.  And mostly I'm just ticked off with them - why wouldn't they tell me that they were closing early when I called the first time??

End of rant.

Are you taking paper script to a local pharmacy for the refill, or is the vet refilling? If you take a paper prescription to a Pharmacist (I know Sam's Club fills pet meds) they can do the dirty work of getting refill authorization.

What food are you using? (I'll look for a better source for you if you'd like)

Then came THE RACKET with Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, and Lizabeth Scott. Quite an intriguing crime drama. Also, the police department and DA's office was shown to have some internal corruption, surely something that wasn't often shown in Hollywood films of the era. Quite an array of character actors in this: William Talman, Ray Collins (both prior to PERRY MASON), William Conrad, Richard Reeves, Don Porter, and other familiar faces even if their names aren't well known. Really liked it.

The transfer was sharp aplenty but had numerous speckles and minor damage here and there.

MEANWHILE, ELSEWHERE IN THE ETHICS WORLD...

There's been a lack of same at work, at least as far as one of our employees goes.

We have a crew of young fellers, mostly of high-school age, who pull double duty as baggers (putting the groceries in bags, which saves us cashiers a lot of time) and as cart-retrievers outside in the parking lot.  One of the perks for cart-retrieving is helping the customers move their bags from their carts into their cars.  For this, they quite often receive tips, occasionally very nice tips.

One of the more senior retrievers, who we will call Anthony, has developed a bad habit.  He spots another of the retrievers helping a customer with their bags, and moves in and "helps."  Then, when the customer tips, said tip gets split between the original retriever and Anthony, even when he has only helped with as few as two bags.

The other retrievers are calling foul.  And I don't blame them.

Management has been notified of the problem.

To end the afternoon, I took out the laserdisc of THE OMEN. Hadn't watched it all the way through in a long time, and wanted to check to see how the quality was since I haven't upgraded to any of the DVDs of the film that have been issued.

For a laserdisc, it's certainly been remastered with the kind of quality typical of laserdiscs, but I'm sure the DVD is much sharper and probably has several English soundtracks to choose from. The laser had mono sound with the film, though Jerry GOldsmith's score is presented in stereo on the analog tracks.

I had my receiver decode the mono sound as Dolby Surround IIx, and that did an adequate job.

I see that the Creative Arts Emmys were awarded last night. At this ceremony are also presented the awards for guest performers on drama and comedy series. There winners were:

Drama:

Patricia Clarkson ("Six Feet Under")

Christian Clemenson ("Boston Legal")

Comedy:

Cloris Leachman ("Malcolm in the Middle")

Leslie Jordan ("Will & Grace")

I am especially thrilled for Leslie Jordan. He's been one of the only consistently hilarious things about WILL AND GRACE for the last several years playing the "straight" Beverley Leslie.

Are you taking paper script to a local pharmacy for the refill, or is the vet refilling? If you take a paper prescription to a Pharmacist (I know Sam's Club fills pet meds) they can do the dirty work of getting refill authorization.

What food are you using? (I'll look for a better source for you if you'd like)

der Brucer

The vet fills the scrip in his office- I was looking into going through pedmeds so that it could just be sent to the house, and would hopefully be cheaper.  We're giving him Hill's Prescription Diet w/d.  I checked Petco online but they don't have it and I've never seen it in other specialty pet stores.

Was just reading the Technical and Craft Emmy winners list.

ELIZABETH I, that marvelous miniseries, leads so far with 5 Emmys. HBO's series ROME won 4 awards.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION won its second EMmy in a row as Best Reality Show (non-competition). THE SIMPSONS won its ninth Emmy as Outstanding Animated Series.

The Emmys for other series, miniseries, acting, writing, and directing come on next Sunday night.

Good Afternoon One-and-All and All-in-One!

Just woke up from a delicious nap. Last night I saw BETTY BUCKLEY in concert. She sang with a modern jazz quintet that included a "weeping" violin. The arrangements were VERY modern jazz, more a series of noises than rhythmic riffs. You really had to listen with new ears to get around it. She didn't completely abandon the traditional but, for the most part, the accompaniment was cacophonous.  Her singing wasn't, however. Her voice was big or intimate depending on the song's meaning--and you could understand every word (young singers, take note). The performance wasn't in a small club either, like you'd expect . It was in a major performing arts center that was packed to the rafters--probably because also on the bill was Michael Crawford. At the end of the program, she got a standing ovation.

Here's the thing about Betty. She's INTENSE! And she takes risks! A couple of years ago, I saw her do a program of all originals and this was, again, in a major performing arts center for a mainstream audience, mostly older. You've got to admire her. She doesn't take the safe route, and that, IMO, is what makes you sit up and take notice. I can't wait to see what she does next. Brava, Betty!

P.S. I feel like taking another nap but, instead, I'll be making a pizza. Enjoy your Sunday!

Callie's meds are cheaper at the local pharmacy than the vet can get them for, so he calls in the script to the pharmacy and I get it there

Or you could do what they do on "Last Comic Standing"...just turn off the microphones!  They know the rules going in, and that's it. ;)

When it looks like someone is going to go over, I'll interrupt them to say you have about 10 minutes or 5 minutes left, that seems to work most of the time.

Just be glad you're not recording with her.  By the way, I met the diva when I sold her the London cast recording of CATS for her to learn the song for her audition.   Since the Theatrebooks store was nver busy, she stayed and visited for about thirty minutes.  Now, whenever I've run into her for the past 40 years she's been singing that number, she never seems to recognize me!  My friend Steve "Mo" Hanan who played Gus the Theatre Cat was better than she was anyway!  And nicer.

I'm aghast that some musicals are the pits.

Yes, I'm back from a lovely and lively social event at DR FjL's and Skip's.  Excellent food and company.

And THE FANTASTICKS?  Quite a lovely and faithful production.  I missed a couple of the old lyrics in the new ones to the rape number, but it still made me laugh.  Tom Jones, by the way, is amazing as Henry the Old Actor.  A beautiful performance.  He and the actor playing Mortimer were quite lovely.

The cast is wonderful.  Burke Moses is the best El Gallo I've seen since the first production I saw in 1964.  Martin Vidnovic and Leo Burmester were wonderful as the fathers and the Boy, Girl, and Mute were excellent.  What a great show!

Have had a strange weekend for movies...watched "Nanny McPhee" last night.  Didn't care at all for the children, which rather wasn't supposed to be the point, I think.  Emma was good, as was Colin.  But....lush production design and a lovely, if overdone, underscore.  Supporting cast were marvelous.

But there's so little humor...the gag reel...well, it could make you gag, but it wasn't funny.

Early this afternoon I watched "My House in Umbria" -- and here was a movie I wanted to love very much.  But what a bothersome, annoying and thoroughly disagreeable character Maggie Smith portrayed.  She had good qualities, but were we supposed to think she was the best guardian for the girl, Amy?  She constantly had a drink in her hands, she imposed herself upon Chris Cooper's married character (Amy's uncle) and she was constantly smoking and being maudlin.  I can't recall being more disappointed in a film.

To take the edge off, I revisited two wonderful entertainments:  For the sheer wizardry of it, I relished "The Day After Tomorrow".  And for the magnificence and literateness of it, "A Room With A View."

All is now right with the world.

Thanks for the info, DR ELMORE.

THE SUNSHINE BOYS is scheduled for next September and I want to audition for that....so I can't really think about directing THE FANTASTICKS, which is a disappointment for me.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yes, DR FJL!  The home page has a photo that doesn't match my conceptions of Andy at all!

I've begun reading Erik Larson's THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY, an excellent book about the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the second act opening of SHOW BOAT.  Fascinating Chicago history and architecture, but serial killer H H Holmes, who put quite a cramp in the festivities, is quite unsettling.  I don't think I'll be reading it before bed.

Time will tell....since I am not directing, my guess is they may go for an accordion.  :P

I bought this book when DR GINNY suggested it.  Yes, quite unsettling.....

Has anyone seen the previews or A preview of HOLLYWOODLAND aka HOLLYWOOD KRYPTONITE?

The preview is online, but surely it's opening soon, somewhere.   8)

Finished the always creepy and effective THE OMEN. I will probably be satisfied with the laserdisc for the time being. More than likely won't watch it again for a year or more.

I recorded GREEN MANSIONS off TCM during the early moring hours, so I watched that tonight. It was the first time for me. Parts of it were lyrical and beautiful. Other parts were so sluggish I thought the film would burn up in the projector because things were moving so slowly and uneventfully.

I suspect this is a book that would be near-impossible to capture on film.

DEADWOOD had me on the edge of my seat tonight. One horrific death made me jump, and then tension was so thick, it was unbearable. Next week, the season finale.

After that, two made-for-HBO movies will bring the series to a close. What a shame! A show this good should have run for years more.

And GREY'S ANATOMY cast its usual spell of enchantment with its uncanny mixture of humor and drama. Yep, moved to tears once again by the end.

And I recorded tonight's ENTOURAGE which I'll watch at some point tomorrow.

Of course, Fox unveils two season premieres tomorrow night. Their season starts earlier than the other networks.

What a nice day. My favorite neighbors of all time came up to their cabin for the day - nice hanging with them. I gave them salad and frozen blueberry yogurt, made from blueberries I picked last week. Lovely weather. The forest is so beautiful this time of year!!! Stream is dangerously low - one of the other streams about a mile down the hill is completely dry. Hope we get some rain before the salmon come in mid-September...

The gathering at Fred and Skip's sounds like it was great fun. Glad y'all had such a good time!

When it looks like someone is going to go over, I'll interrupt them to say you have about 10 minutes or 5 minutes left, that seems to work most of the time.

Where's the fun in that?? ;)
