Title: I FEEL A SONG COMING ON
Post by: bk on August 23, 2006, 12:23:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you felt a song coming on, the song came on, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're sitting there in amazement about how much ME there was in today's notes, and frankly, they're just a little disgusted.

Good morning, all!  Not a great deal to do this morning, but I'm hopefully back to my usual schedule.  This morning I've a trip to the post office, the recordng office, and the NYPL Theatre Collection: librarian Barbara Knowles phoned me yesterday to tell me a scrapbook I had requested has been located.  Now if they can only find the missing BABES scrapbook I've been hunting for the past four years![move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Well, I must get back to work. I need to practice my lines. Like Bruce, I have not performed (other than the radio shows) for a long time, but I will soon be the "voice of the Foundation Center" The office needs/wants to re-record the phone messages on our system. They asked me to do it and I will receive a Barnes & Noble gift card for my efforts. By late next week I should be on the system. If you call the FC main number and the operator/receptionist doesn't answer you should hear me!

A question to all on Ask BK Day:

What do you think of home schooling?

I ask because my father's stepson (I guess that makes Joe my stepbrother, an interesting thought) is going through a particularly nasty divorce.  His wife has been homeschooling their daughters, now aged 15 and 17, since the begininning, and has been working hard to turn the two girls against him.

Try as I might, I don't remember any of my friends having been home schooled.  Or, at least, none of them have ever admitted it.  I've only met the two girls once, when Dad and PaulAnn married, and they seemed a bit strange back then, noncommunicative with anyone except each other.

Is home schooling a good idea for the children involved?  Or is it just a good idea for the parent doing the schooling?

Good morning!

It was overcast when I got up and got the newspaper, but the sun has broken through, and I suspect we're in for another scorching, muggy day.

Rain was in the forecast, but now I'm wondering if the front has passed us by. We'll see.

I have a new gay-themed movie to watch today. THIRD MAN OUT was done for the here! cable network. Of course, living in the Bible Belt, our cable service doesn't subscribe to here! or to the other gay network LOGO, so I have to hope that programming on these networks that I want to see will eventually be ported over to DVD.

This is a murder mystery starring Chad Allen as gay detective Donald Strachey. A second made-for-cable mystery featuring Chad as this character just appeared last weekend - SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM - and I'll get it on DVD when it's released as well.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR TCB!!!! All good things.

Hey, Ben - congrats on your news!

Woods - I have known several Home School families - the kids excelled at reading and math, beyond their counterparts in the (egad) public schools. Except for one Down's Syndrome boy, all of the kids tested way up on the SATs and sailed through their college courses. The Down's Syndrom kid kept his own checkbook and learned to read and do simple arithmetic. He eventually got a full-time stockroom job with full bennies at Microsoft.

The home-school parents were not more intelligent than other parents, most had no real teacher-training. But they were willing to learn, and to put in the time with their children. I think it's intention, more than experience, that works the magic. Plus, the kids get individual attention, one-on-one time, specialized instruction - all unavailable in public schools.

In my experience, home-schooled and private-schooled kids are WAY better educated than the hapless public schooled.

...In my experience, home-schooled and private-schooled kids are WAY better educated than the hapless public schooled.

Private or public, kids only spend about 14% of their time in school, so, in a sense, all kids are home-schooled.  How the parents choose to spend that huge chunk of out-of-school time makes a lot of difference, I think.

Betting on Bertie (don't know if it's still called that or not) had a score by Wright and Forrest - I think it had been kicking around for ages, but Walter Willison's friend Doug Holmes and written a new book - maybe Walter did some of the book, too.  We did a reading in 1991, twice if I recall.  It was based on Bertie Wooster and Jeeves by Wodehouse.  Also in the reading was Christopher Hewitt, Judy Kaye, Loni Ackerman, Doug Holmes and others I can't remember.

What do you think of home schooling?
Is home schooling a good idea for the children involved?  Or is it just a good idea for the parent doing the schooling?

First of all, if the girls are being turned against their father by the other parent -- that's against the law in many states. (I did research on it for a script -- so I know more than I care to know about "Parental Alienation.")

As for home-schooling - depends on who's doing it and what the motives are. Some kids are home-schooled because parents don't want them exposed to certain ideas which they oppose. These usually have to do with sexual orientation, religion, etc. - you fill in the blanks. Three guesses on what my opinion is on this reasoning.
Others are home-schooled because the parents truly believe they can get a better education that way. Home-schooling is very sophisticated these days. It's not just a matter of teaching your kids in your living room. There is a whole network out there that home schoolers can be a part of. Kids can go out and take classes with other home-schoolers - often taught by experts you would not find in a regular school setting. I have a friend in Denver who home-schooled her TEN children. They all wound up going to minor colleges like Yale and Harvard at unbelievably young ages (15, 16) and doing incredibily well.
And that's my two cents worth.

In the odd mac and cheese department--we took the kids to a "Noodles" restaurant the other night where the only thing even approximately kid-friendly was the Mac and Cheese.  Well, guess what?  They made it with Dijon mustard.  Even I couldn't stand it.  :)

Dijon mustuard in mac and cheese?  Blechhh.  I'm going to Hugo's momentarily and I shall indeed be having the mac and cheese.  They don't do it with mac noodles, and they use three different cheeses, but it's quite tasty.

I LOVE Project Runway.
I suppose I should also now confess to the guilty pleasure of THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR. I can't stay away from it. And I know others of my ilk (whatever that is) who are hooked, too. How can you resist the sweet (and it often is - really!) story of Hugh Hefner and his three live-in girlfriends - the youngest of whom is all of 20? What's strange is that there isn't anything "dirty" about the show. The young women - who do have amazing bodies - really seem to care for Hef and he for them. In last night's episode they all went to San Diego to visit the home of the youngest of the three. There was an awkward moment when Hef met her grandad -- who was probably younger than he is -- but hey, who's counting.
I started watching the show for a few minutes as a joke and wound up tuning in on an almost regular basis. Go figure.

Well, a good number of Man and Cheese recipes call for dried mustard, and  Gourmet Magazine (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/14930) calls for Dijon.

Even the  Dairy Farmers of Washington (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/11-14-2005/0004215532&EDATE=) toss in a bit in one of their recipes.

When Forrest died in 1999, this  newstory (http://www.glbtq.com/arts/wright_r,2.html) reported:

Quote
For over seventy years Robert Wright and George Forrest were partners in life and art. Together they wrote music and lyrics for film, stage, and club acts. They specialized in adapting themes from classical music into engaging tunes for movie scores and stage musicals.

In the 1990s Wright and Forrest returned to a work that they had begun three decades earlier with P.G. Wodehouse, Betting on Bertie, a musical about the Bertie Wooster character from Wodehouse's "Jeeves" stories. The project ended when Forrest died in Miami on October 10, 1999.
Forrest's passing brought to an end a loving and creative partnership of over seven decades. Wright and Forrest's professional career included work in film, television, radio, the cabaret circuit, and most notably the stage, rightfully acknowledged when they were given the 1995 ASCAP/Richard Rodgers Award for their contributions to American musical theater.

When Wright died last year,  Playbill (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/94336.html) reported:

Quote
Robert Wright, Composer-Lyricist of Kismet, Grand Hotel, Dead at 90
By Ernio Hernandez
August 1, 2005

Composer-lyricist Robert Wright who, with writing partner George Forrest, penned lyrics and wrote music for Kismet, Grand Hotel, Song of Norway and other musicals, died at his Miami home of natural causes July 27 at the age of 90.

Wright and Forrest were collaborators since the 1920s, when they were in high school together. They both played piano, and both wrote music and lyrics. The team was still active at the time of Forrest's death in 1999, refining a longtime project, a P.G. Wodehouse-Guy Bolton musical, Betting on Bertie, and developing another long-aborning project, a musical version of Eudora Welty's novella, "The Ponder Heart."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TCB!!!

In the odd mac and cheese department--we took the kids to a "Noodles" restaurant the other night where the only thing even approximately kid-friendly was the Mac and Cheese.  Well, guess what?  They made it with Dijon mustard.  Even I couldn't stand it.  :)

Thanks a lot, JMK.  Please do not send any mac and cheese!

Looks like rain...but that won't happen.  We don't get rain from May through October.

You're missing one of THE GREAT entertainment events on television -- PROJECT RUNWAY!  A new episode every Wednesday at 10 p.m.

As I've mentioned before, apart from AMERICAN IDOL, I don't watch competitive reality shows. I get too caught up in the drama and make myself miserable. Half a year of IDOL is quite enough for me.

I very much enjoyed THIRD MAN OUT this afternoon. I was afraid with this TV-movie appearing on here!, they would have no budget, and everything would look like it was filmed in someone's backyard.

Couldn't have been more wrong. Looked like TV-movies I've seen on Lifetime, A&E, and other cable channels. MURDER IN GREENWICH is what it most reminded me of. To give it a noir-ish look and feel, the color was desaturated somewhat, but the transfer was widescreen enhanced and very sharp. Good Dolby 5.1 sound.

Having read Agatha Christie's THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY, I had a jump start on solving the crime which I did before it was revealed. Still, well done, nice acting from the principals, and one I quite enjoyed. I'll be looking forward to getting SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM whenever it gets released to home video.

There was a behind-the-scenes featurette on the disc that I also watched. Good information and nice to hear the actors out of character talking about their work and the production. That was the only extra apart from a trailer.

I went to Amazon.com to order it and they had a "Better Together" suggestion of "Third Man Out" with "Adam and Steve."  I was interested in both movies, so I put both in my cart, but then I thought that I should compare the prices between Amazon.com and DeepDiscountDVD.com and guess what...for the two titles, it's $13.60 LESS on DeepDiscountDVD.com than Amazon!  That can essentially get me another DVD for free!  DDD charges no tax and just has cheaper prices (in most cases)!  DDD got my order. ;D

Funny story:

I pre-ordered "This Island Earth" via Amazon.com several weeks ago.

Yesterday, I visited my "Account" to verify that it was in the process of being shipped.  To my amazement, it had an "estimated" shipping date of August 24th, with an estimated arrival of August 28th.

What you need to know is that I have their free shipping with 2nd-day delivery plan (it pays for itself in about a month for me).

I visited the listing and satisfied myself they did, indeed, have it in.  In fact, they were promising it by today if anyone used 1-day ordering to obtain it.

Have gone round and round with them on previous pre-orders that took more than a week from date of release for them to ship to me, I duly cancelled my pre-order.

I then simply ordered it again.  It shipped last night.

And it arrived 35 minutes ago!

Ain't that the shits?

DP Colin had his stitches removed from what is left of his ear. The biopsy results show that he need smore removed as there art beginnings  malenoma skin cancer there.  He had a melanoma removed from his arm a decade or more ago.
More surgery now before we leave for North America.

We are back from the gala benefit preview at books&co at The Greene (http://www.thegreene.com), greater Dayton's newest shopping/dining/entertainment destination.  The partay was lovely, with performances by many local musicians including one of our favorites - guitarist Jim McCutcheon.  The special event coordinator for the bookstore presented a check for $12,150 to the executive directors of the literacy coalition and the arts consortium.  They were both quite pleased.

The Greene officially opens at 10am tomorrow.  Work crews were still on the job when we left at about 8:45 tonight.  I suspect they will work all night.

Private or public, kids only spend about 14% of their time in school, so, in a sense, all kids are home-schooled.  How the parents choose to spend that huge chunk of out-of-school time makes a lot of difference, I think.

Ginny, I could not agree with you more on this point. How a child turns out as an adult is they are educated by thier elders by example and guidance.

I am not overly familiar with Project Runway. Is it on cable?

I think everyone should make a point of eating a piece of cake in my honor today!  Great idea, Ron!

TCB, I have a piece of Ghirardelli's dark mint chocolate in your honor!

Looking forward to the end of the week. It has been a long and arduous week. Itching to do some writing this weekend. Perhaps hiking...

I have to do a lot more packing!  Through Costco, I went to LendingTree.com and signed up to get some mortgage offers...and I got some.  Now, I need to supply some information to the lenders who've given preliminary quotes so that they can give me some more comprehensive quotes so that I may buy a condo!  And I have to have my current house (that I rent from my sister) cleaned out (my bedroom is the worst...it's really messy ::)) so that we can fix it up and repaint some rooms and make it all pretty for potential buyers.

That's what I plan to do.  Now, I just have to do it. ;)

And with that, I must do the Wussburger.  We have our monthly day-after-the-board-meeting-staff-meeting tomorrow at work and it's at 9:30 a.m.!  I usually get to work by 10:00 (or so) so I really must go to sleep now.

Good night, all!
