Well, you've read the notes, you know what day of the week it is, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're having a month of Moo-ndays.

I had a nice visit with Mr. Matt Ashford last night - he's busy rehearsing for Urinetown now, which I suppose I'll go see when it opens.

TOD - I love THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, too. And SINCE YOU WENT AWAY. FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. STALAG 17. THE GREAT ESCAPE. And  so many others.
I re-watched many many WW II movies before writing my last TV-movie - which is about a family in small-town America during the war - mainly from a child's POV. It'll be aired in November. It was great fun writing it -- I've always wanted to write a 40's style film.

And the word of the day is: MERITOCRACY!
Disgusted with all of the elected leaders in town, we decided to go for A COMIC RETRY and establish a MERITOCRACY based on who had the grooviest motor vehicle.  MY EROTIC CAR came in third, probably because the airbrushed beefcake on the hood was a little too explicit for some of the voters.

Stalag 17
The Great Escape
Von Ryan's Express
Bridge on the River Kwai
a major story thread in Slaughterhouse Five

(Never have been much of a battle fan)

And, for the Gregory Peck fans out there, let's not forget Twelve O'Clock High

Der Grampa is off to the Eastern Shore, to take care of the grandlads.  When they saw him drive away, the dogs all howled from being abandoned.  I had to shout "Hey, I'm still here!" to get them to stop.

Odds are, they won't howl when I go to work.  I think it's a car thing, and I walk.

Good morning, all!  Today, I am frustrated by my two office colleagues' absence, tardy payment by the Institute in California, too-prolonged negotiation with my accountant over taxes, and too many places to travel today.  But mostly, I'm troubled by late summer doldrums and failure of people to respond to emails, phone calls, etc. over the past week

Now that I've established this air of discontent, I shall go, ponderng the queston of World War II movies, of which the only one I can think of is CATCH-22.  I thought the book was brilliant, comic and moving.  I wish the movie were.

Hi all.  I owe a very late but most sincere Happy Birthday to Dear TCB.  I thought your birthday was today!

My boss is out of the office on a medical leave for the next 6-8 weeks..  Nothing like a little extra pressure.

As for WWII films, I'm not sure if it is even set in WWII but I love Errol Flynn's Uncertain Glory.

Morning, Elmore and Donna!  How do you like riding the bus with me?

I liked the Great Escape but until the recent DVD release I didn't know how fictional the story really was. As a film entertainment it is great; as a representation of what really happened it's not.

I like to add Bridge on the RIver Kwai (The actual bridge was not blown up as depicted in the film)

DAS BOAT

And surprisingly I can't remember if I have ever watch the entire film of The Best Years of Our Lives. I am sure I have but can't remember when.

Sorry to have been E&T last night. Around 10 p.m., I just couldn't keep my eyes open, and I went to bed and slept 8 hours, the longest sleep I've had in weeks.

I was watching THIS ISLAND EARTH when exhaustion overtook me. Perhaps I was just tired, but I didn't find the first hour of it holding my attention as I expected it to. I'll finish it earlt this afternoon before putting in something else.

THIS ISLAND EARTH has been given a full screen transfer by Universal in this remastering (I suspect the film was matted in theaters when it was shown). The stock footage used in the movie looks terrible, of course, but the real live action scenes look sharp, clear, and Technicolorful. Mono sound is fine.

Began my evening last night with another WILD WILD WEST episode. In it, Arthur O'Connell played a warden in a state prison trying to steal the money of a man condemned to die. Roald Dahl was in this episode, too, playing the executioner.

I'm a big fan of British WWII drama. Have never been one for combat scenes--I'm interested in how people coped.

WE'LL MEET AGAIN (TV)
WISH ME LUCK (TV)
ENEMY AT THE DOOR (TV)

Plus, PBS did a fascinating documentary called NAZI PRISON ESCAPE, which covers much of the same material as THE GREAT ESCAPE.

Favorite WWII film would have to be CASABLANCA. I admire THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES very much as well. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, SCHINDLER'S LIST, and CONSPIRACY are three more recent war films I really admired.

Many others previously mentioned including STALAG 17 and THE GREAT ESCAPE are also favorites.

Last night's PROJECT RUNWAY:

SPOILER

What a STRANGE show!

The previews -- TOTALLY misleading.

Poor Jeffrey...and I mean that sincerely. To be stuck with Angela's mother...who looked like nothing other than a big blackberry in her personal attire.

So...the challenge. Feh.

I was most impressed with Jeffrey's mother! A very classy lady. Ditto Uli's mother and Robert's sister.

All the hoo-haw over color choice between Angela's mom and Jeffrey was simply over-the-top. I blame Tim Gunn...NO WAY should he ever have solicited input from the mother about the fabric without Jeffrey being there. It was sabotage, IMO. Jeffrey's choices were his choices...any difference of opinion over them should have been between him and the mother with his sense of taste being the deciding factor.

Count me among the 30% who supported Jeffrey.

As for the dress, it wasn't pretty. But it was fitted well. With all that Jeffrey had to put up with, his heart could not have been in it.

AND...did I hear the judges task another designer for NOT using his own judgment over pleasing the client? I think so.

Interesting that Michael Kors referred to the Jeffrey/Angela's mom issue as a "miscommunication."

Dark purple and dark green as her favorite colors, indeed.  The periwinkle looked great against the purple fabric Jeffrey selected.  As for the dress looking "matronly," If this woman doesn't want to look matronly, who the hell dresses her in her street clothes?

And to ask Angela how she thought her mom looked was beneath contempt. Yes, Jeffrey can be boorish, but he was put on the defensive from the start...and the mother adopted a "victim" approach that reminds me SO much of Angela at her worst that I wanted to slap her.

Robert WAS boring. Oh my gosh, but he was boring.

Back to the Barbies, Robert!

No plus-size worries with the Barbster!

I thought Uli's outfit and Michael's outfit were the best.

As for the winner -- I dunno. I thought it looked awful. I didn't think it was flattering...the entire front of the dress was all stressed/crumpled...no smoothness to it.

The oversized collar -- that indefinable Vincent trademark of overstatement in some element -- looked cartoonish to me.

I was disappointed in the episode and the outcome.

Why...why....that's the most important part!  If you don't get down with the specifications of the "interocitor", the rest of the film might as well be rocket science!

TOTD:

BEst Years of our LIves -- excellent film, I saw it this past weekend!
Americanization of Emily
Casablanca
From Here to Eternity

Those are the ones I can think of off hand...

STalag 17 I remember seeing one time in a class.

I have also seen a number of documentaries including the one bk mentioned intoday's notes. In a class I took we all had to do a paper on some aspect of the social effects of the war and I did a paper on the internment camps. Some Japanese were sent as far inland as Fort Abraham Lincoln in North Dakota.

I seem to recall a television movie or miniseries with the name of FArewell to Manzanar. It was based on a family's experiences in a camp in California.

Sadly it is one of many black marks in US history. However all countries have them it is due to ignorance, greed, and fear that hence leads to deplorable actions of those in power.

I'm up, I'm up.

We must be careful when we say we suspect This Island Earth was matted in theaters.  By 1955, This Island Earth would not have received special treatment, it would have absolutely been filmed and projected in 1:85.  What Universal has done on the DVD is simply transfer the entire 1:37 negative image, hence the top and bottom portions were NOT meant to be seen - the film was NOT framed for that ratio and if you watch a full-frame presentation that fact comes screaming at you in every single shot because there is too much useless headroom in every single shot - it looks bad and Universal, who I very often support while others decry them, dropped the ball on this DVD and they should be ashamed of themselves.

another vote for

WHERE EAGLES DARE - improbably enjoyable adventure

BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL - good Robert Wagner performance and an interesting story of Marines on an island

OPERATION CROSSBOW - another improbably adventure about the race to build a rocket bomb

DESTINATION TOKYO - Cary Grant on a submarine.

HELP!!

yes, I am asking for help from DR's on HHW.

The non-actor dumba$$ that we have playing Atticus Finch told us that he will need two suits....one for the courtroom and another one.  Fine....that's okay.  He is going to buy one.  Okay.....the MOST important one is the courtroom suit, of course.

He brings in the one he paid good money for, a nice seersucker suit with NO vest - which is needed in the courtroom.  HE BOUGHT THE OTHER SUIT....the one that could have been ANY suit....ANY SUIT WE HAVE!!!  And of course the one he bought doesn't have a vest!

HELP....does any DR have a three piece summer linen or seersucker suit in size 42 or 44 R or L that we can borrow.

I can't find anything locally....and I am NOT going to spend $200 on this boob.

I am also anxious to see Big Brother tonight. I'm hoping that James goes, since he is really bugging me.  It will be very interesting to see who wins HOH. I"m hoping Will. Cause i want to see what he would do.  Of course i'd always love janelle to win.

I'm actually also curious what chicken george would do. I'm not sure if his alliance with janelle is for real. He seems close to her, erika and danielle at various times.

I definitely don't want erika to win. Although i'd be curious to see who she would put up with janelle.  I also wonder if danielle (or janelle for that matter) would honor their one week truce. I'm guessing neither would. But i'm actually wondering if danielle would be more likely to keep her word (since she is trying to be more honest).

Anyhow hopefully it won't be another lame trivia comp.

I finished THIS ISLAND EARTH. It did hold my attention more in the second half. Alas, the transfer had some problems in the second half. Still, it looks good so many years later. I understand the last DVD issue of it (also full screen) was abysmal. This at least looks very good.

Why am I stunned?

I just received in the mail an item I won on eBay.  I paid "dearly" for it.  It was a competitively bid upon item.  The description was nearly too good to be true:  A "near Mint" (jacket and LP) 10-inch of MGM's "The Pirate" (first issue on 33 1/3).

This was issued in 1951.

It arrived today.  I expected nice...but I didn't expect THIS nice....the cover is like new...the LP is glossy/shiny.  The only telltale sign of age is in a slightly yellowed back (which was originally more eggshell than white).  The artwork is terrific.  The photo I'm adding here does not do the cover justice...at all!!!

Since CABARET takes place circa 1929-31, I'd hardly count it as a World War II movie, but I would MR ROBERTS and SOUTH PACIFIC to my list.

I wasn't sure when Cabaret was set, but I thought it was just on the cusp of WWW2

Many of my choices were in my LOST post....so I will say

another vote for
BRIDGE TO THE SUN....young American girl marries Japanese boy and moves to Japan just prior to Pearl Harbor...based on a true story

How could I have forgotten Where Eagles Dare! That is my absolutely favorite WWW2. i own it on DVD and when I want pure entertainment I watch which turns out to be about once a month or so.

"On the cusp..." seems accurate.  What we saw in Isherwood's stories, "I Am A Camera" & "Cabaret" was Berlin  just before (1930-31)-- and then during -- the Nazis taking power (and establishing the Third Reich) in Germany -- circa 1933.

I re-watched many many WW II movies before writing my last TV-movie - which is about a family in small-town America during the war - mainly from a child's POV. It'll be aired in November. It was great fun writing it -- I've always wanted to write a 40's style film.

Right now, I'm on the west side of I-5, about 1 and 1/2 miles from the exit.  I'll move to the east side of I-5 (practically on the same street), about 1 mile from the same exit...also much, much closer to my work.

One of the best things about moving will be when I have to go to the post office to pick up packages that require a signature.  Right now, because I'm on the west side of I-5, I have to go to the West Olympia post office.  It's six miles away from where I live and I have to take an extra long lunch to get there...traffic is horrible on the West Side at lunch time!  But if I get the place I want, my mail would go to the Tumwater post office, which is only two blocks from where I live!  I love that! ;D

What network, Maria?

Disney Channel, TCB. As I said earlier, it's the 1940's movie I've always wanted to write. It even features a mini tap dance extravagnaza. And there are several mentions of Mickey and Judy (the lead little girl admires their dancing and wants to emulate them). Sooo, I visited bk at the Collectors Showcase last month... and Mr. Rooney was there! (And didn't seem too thrilled by the fact). I told him that it was an honor to meet him and informed him that he's held in great regard in this new film. He perked up for a moment -- until he realized it was merely television. His wife was very gracious.

Good evening, fellow Dear Readers. Early this morning, my DH and I took off on a day trip. There's a road that he thinks runs along the prettiest spot in Arizona. So off we went. And ran into a major storm. 25 miles on a dirt road along the Mogollon Rim (which DR Cillaliz will remember) with pounding rain and hail. Before we ran out of cell phone range, I called home and left a message telling the kids where we were, in case we didn't make it home.

They were pounded with rain here, too, with several folks needing rescue from the flooded streets. I'll never understand why people drive into flooded washes. That is pounded into our heads: Don't drive into a flooded street.

I completely forgot to mention this afternoon that the other thing I watched earlier today was TWO GIRLS AND A SAILOR. I recorded this yesterday on the DVR and just got to it today.

It was over two hours long - ricidulous for a cream puff confection of song and story. But it was so loaded with talent each getting one or more numbers that a twenty minute plot was extended past the point of irritation. I mean, they had TWO big bands: Harry James and Xavier Cugat, each of whom performed two or three times plus solo artists appearing with the bands, too. You additionally had Jose Iturbi, Jimmy Durante, Ben Blue, Virginia O'Brien, Helen Forrest, and Lena Horne with one or two numbers each in addition to June Allyson and Gloria DeHaven sharing several duets and each having a solo. WAY overstuffed.

Come to think of it, ANCHORS AWEIGH made the next year was also over two hours. I guess during the war years, they crammed as much music, song, and dance into these romantic musicals.

There is also a featurette on the first disc on the making of the film. Interesting facts about the uneasy working relationship between Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder that I didn't realize. Much of the documentary is a puff piece on what a masterpiece the film is (like we didn't know that!), but I did appreciate the background on Chandler, and that Billy Wilder's next film was more than a little nod in the direction of Chandler - THE LOST WEEKEND.

The two GREY'S ANATOMY episodes shown tonight were way out of sync with each other. I don't quite understand why ABC is skipping backwards and forwards in time in showing these episodes. They're great, wonderful, and I'm familiar enough with the series now to be able to follow the ongoing story strands even as chopped up as they are.

However, I'll be glad to get the reruns over with a settle in with the new season and thus episodes in order.

CSI repeated a very interesting episode with a virgin birth and also Gil having to disprove the scientific evidence of a fellow forensic scientist that seemed irrefutible.

The only negative: no George Eads tonight. However, since he had the majority to do on last week's episode, I guess it's only fair that other players be given their chances in the spotlight.

Will someone tell me why Terence Malick has the reputation he does?  We just endured THE NEW WORLD, one of the most tedious films I've ever seen.  I'm beginning to believe that Colin Farrell just simply cannot act, though God knows his director, Malick, certainly doesn't help him with slumberfest (I kid you not, The Lovely Wife and I must have dozed off a half dozen times during it...the only problem being, you wake up and nothing's happened and you're right where you were), providing him with no character, no scintillating dialogue, and a threadbare plot.  Endless shots of people wandering around the woods...gazing at each other either lovingly, sadly, or contemplatively...long after the point of the scene has been established (and there weren't a lot of points).  Almost no dialogue, but the film is saddled with a pointless narration.  You know it's not needed when you can understand everything ad nauseam through the laborious shots that pound the simpistic and simple-minded story into you in beating-the-dead-horse doses.  And despite its simplistic story, the motivations remain muddled.  A little more character, Terence, less scenery, okay?  And there are these god-awful jarring blackouts and the whole thing, despite its simplisticness, seems disconnected and aimless.  Avoid it like the plague...unless you're having trouble sleeping.

I felt the same way about Malick's Days of Heaven.  He gets my prize for most over-rated director.

Could the Hungarian film be funnier than that???

I didn't mean to offend you, Penny. Or maybe you weren't offended and I misunderstood. Of course, I wasn't meaning that either film was Disney-esque. It's simply that Fateless presents the story in such a matter-of-fact way, stripped of all melodrama, that it's painful to watch, but rewarding in the end. It presents a totally different view of the horror of those days, suggesting a kind of perverse beauty. I've never seen anything like it -- and my family lived through a lot of what the movie shows - so I certainly wasn't makling light of it.

I have never heard of Terence Malick or his reputation...although that would be a great name for a band...Terence Malick and his Reputations!

Met with a friend after work and we went for some drinks and appetizers after work. It was a pleasant time and a great way to wind down a nasty work week.

Well, this WUSSBURGERING is pathetic.

The only Malick film I like is entitled Badlands.  Every other one I've endured has been torture.

AOL is now offering their customers free AOL mail and buddy list, should you choose not to use them to connect to the Internet.  I'm about to finally take advantage of that little thing, because guess what - although I am logged on to AOL, I cannot go to any websites - not happening, not working, total BS.

I'm here...finally. ::) I went to my parents' house for dinner and we had lasagna.  It was homemade and very good.  My mom also made homemade macaroni and cheese!  That was even better than the lasagna!  She put bread crumbs on the top of the mac and cheese and it got all crunchy and very good. :)

She also made fried zucchini (bland, but not bad) and my sister and niece (because they've become pseudo-vegetarians) had fried clam strips. :P

Dessert was homemade (except for the crust) strawberry-rhubarb pie.  I've never liked it but I ate it. ;) My mom tried to make whipped cream, but it never whipped up.  My dad thinks that she might have accidentally tried to whip some half-and-half.  I wouldn't doubt it. ;D
