Well, you've read the notes, the notes were clewless, and now it is time for you to post until the clewless cows come home.  To it, I say.

Let's start out with a report on The Lion King, currently on tour in Philly:

Our seats could have been worse.

But not much.

The Academy of Music in Philadelphia is a grand opera house, built in the traditional horseshoe configuration.  This is great, if you're just there to hear a production, but can be less than perfect if you want to watch a show.  Our seats were to the far right.  Naturally, anything that was stage right and behind the proscenium was blocked from our view.  Guess what - Taymor's staging emphasizes upstage right.

There were sound problems as well.  Miking on Young Simba and Scar should have been better.  As for Zazu, the miking wasn't the problem, his lack was in his diction.

Aside from that, the production was fine.  Der B and I couldn't spot anything that looked scaled down from the staging we saw in Los Angeles.  And the grandlads enjoyed the show very much.  Particular kudos to the puppetry done by both Zazu and Timon.

Hello, DR SWW!  And good morning, all!  I had a strange mixture of dreams: I don't know if I was working at The Drama Book Shop or at a construction site, for example.  At one point I was filing Russian plays and then I was examining pavement.

So, today's a round of Toyland and nuns: I have a few errands at the recording office and at some point a meeting with Andy Monroe about the Singing Nun show.  I have to think about a holiday arrangement of a David Friedman song for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, and I need to finish this chart for Klea (God it's a long number!).  I need to clear my calendar for the OKLAHOMA! work I need to do this week, and to allow myself time to work on Mr Kimmel's epic.

Yesterday, I started reading Scott Smith's (A SIMPLE PLAN) new book THE RUINS: four college kids, one Greek who speaks no English, and a German who may not be what he seems, looking for an archeological site in the jungles of Yucatan.   It's creepy so far.

I've decided what the real problem is with der B's daughter, Magic Mommy.

She doesn't have a clew as to how to listen to others.

In every conversation, including those held yesterday, she has opinions, oh yes she has opinions.  And she made clear that she has opinions.  The sad thing is, she has absolutely no respect for other people's opinions, because she only allows herself the right to be right.

A simple discussion of toll booths came up, for example.  She daily has to cross the Bay Bridge into Annapolis on her way to work.  No toll booth going into Annapolis.  But in the other direction, there is a regular jam at the toll booth for people wishing to escape from Annapolis, what with driviers having to fumble for the correct change.  This blockage regularly takes ten minutes for her to get through.  And I have no doubt that she is right in her reporting of this, as der B and I have noted the blockage ourselves.

However, and there is a however, it is therefor her contention that it also takes ten minutes to get through the tollbooths just south of Dover on Delaware's Highway One.  These are tollbooths that der B and I travel through on a regular basis.  We have never been held up by ten minutes waiting to get through the tollbooths.  Not once.  For one thing, the toll is a dollar, so there is no fumbling for change.  And once we're through the booths, it takes no time at all to get back up to speed.

Nope, Magic Mommy will have none of it.  She is right, she is always right, and it matters not to her that she is comparing apples to oranges.

This arguement went on for ten minutes.  We could have traveled through the Bay Bridge toll booth in the same amount of time it took for this arguement to take place.

And it was an arguement about nothing!

On our way home, after returning from Philly to the Magic Mommy house and getting back in our car, der Brucer decided we should time how long it took to get through the Dover toll booth.

Ninety seconds, tops, from having to start applying the brakes, getting into the most crowded lane (he does play fair), paying the toll, and then getting back up to speed.

I also had a wacky dream last night and I know exactly what cause it. I was watching (actully I was channel surfing and it caught my eye) a "reality" program earlier in the day and was quite surprise that a channel like Showtime was airing it.
Since this is a family sight I can't really explain what I saw but it must have left an impression on me because I dreamed a duplicate with people I don't even know, remember seeing them anywhere or meeting them.

The brain is a strange and wonderful place.

A question for Elmore: How many musicians are you planning for in the Brain score?  I've noticed that a lot of the cast recordings of late have a pit with just five members, jacked up by some great choral work by the cast where appropriate.

My plan to force Magic Mommy to wait for us while we went into Tower or Borders came to naught.  Just as well.

While der Grampa and the clan walked to our planned post-theater dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe, I detoured.  Der B and I would like to see Bourne's Edward Scissorhands when it plays at the Academy, but since the box office was closed during both intermission and after the play, it fell to me to find out when they would be open.  (Turns out, the main box office is at the Kimmel (no relation) Center just a couple of blocks south.)  I got this info from one of the very nice house staff at the Academy.  It pays to ask nicely, of course, with a friendly tone of voice, and to say thank-you.

Since both Tower and Borders were en route to the Hard Rock, I decided to check to see if they had the James Stewart Signature Collection.  Tower didn't have it, although they did have the individual DVDs (at a price higher than we can get it on-line).  Borders didn't have it at all.

Der Grampa and clan couldn't have been seated for more than ten minutes when I joined them.  Magic Mommy could only stare at me as I detailed what I had found out.  How had I been able to make three stops in so little time?

What can I say, I'm organized.

A question for our esteemed BK: Would you recommend getting the full Stewart set, or should I settle for Spirit of St. Louis as a single item?

DR SWoody, I have found that the best way to deal with folks like this is to say, "Okay," and let them think they've won. You won't win, even though you are right.  It saves time and frustration.

Today I will finally get to the MONK episode that's caused some discussion here.

I will say that like so many shows that have eccentric characters (I'm thinking THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES specifically), as time goes on, the staff writers exaggerate all their eccentricities for the sake of the comedy, and the result is always characters that don't resemble live people in any way.

For me, the character of Monk can still entertain in various episodes even though I think the writers started going the outrageous route in Season 3 when Monk was locked in a safe room and had a panic attack even though there was an easy escape right next to the door that shut. The scene went on for several minutes with Monk screaming for help despite the Captain and his friends all assuring him he was all right and he had an easy exit. I knew then that all subtlety had been thrown out the window for the sake of a joke.

And Monk isn't the only character who's gone off the deep end. Randy Discher has become such a nincompoop that one wonders how he dresses himself in the morning or is able to turn the key to start his car to get to work.

I say this and still, the show can make me laugh. I just don't equate it with a great show any more.

Still, I'll weigh in with an opinion this afternoon after I've finally watched the episode.

The Emmys are tonight. Trying to predict winners with the Emmys is the hardest of all guessing games. More than any other awards, the Emmys can have winners come out of nowhere (remember Patricia Arquette's victory for MEDIUM last year. Not one critic that I read predicted that she'd win; she wasn't even nominated this year). On the other hand, folks can win trophy after trophy long after their acting has become stale and predictable.

With that said, here are my guesses for some of the major prizes:

Best Drama - GREY'S ANATOMY

Best Comedy - THE OFFICE

Best Reality Series - THE AMAZING RACE

Best Miniseries - BLEAK HOUSE

Actor in a Drama Series - Dennis Leary, RESCUE ME

Actress in a Drama Series - Allison Janney, THE WEST WING

Actor in a Comedy Series - Steve Carrell, THE OFFICE

Actress in a Comedy Series - Lisa Kudrow, THE COMEBACK

Supporting Actor in Drama - Gregory Itzin, '24'

Supporting Actress in Drama - Sandra Oh, GREY'S ANATOMY

Supporting Actor in Comedy - Jeremy Piven, ENTOURAGE

Supporting Actress in Comedy - Megan Mullaley, WILL & GRACE

In the DVD player, I have cued up the 1935 MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. I haven't watched this movie in a long time, and the last time was on a laserdisc that was one of the earliest laserdiscs issued and was thus not very sharp or in very good shape. I'm very curious to see how this looks on DVD with the technology now present for capturing prized old films to disc.

Angels in the Outfield  - Dec 19
Presenting Lily Mars - Dec 19
Band of Angels - Jan 30
Up Periscope - Dec 19
Operation Crossbow - Dec 19
The Illustrated Man - Dec 19
Looker - Jan 30
Madame Curie - Jan 30

Yes, I recomment the Stewart box if you're a Stewart fan - it's good value for money, and I happen to enjoy the films, not always the case in box sets.  The only complete loser, transfer-wise, is The Naked Spur, but it's a great movie.

When "Three's Company" started, Susan Sommers' character was just a ditzy blonde.  Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but still, a "real" character.  As the series went on, she morphed into a caricature that was so far from a realistic persona, that I totally lost interest in the entire show.

Will the Emmy's be worth watching?  I haven't watched a lot of current shows.  I'm gald Christopher Meloni is finally up for an award.

I saw a local production o f "Take Me Out" last night which was surprisingly well done.  There are some great monologues in that play-- ones you'd die to be able to do.  Since we had seen the Broadway production (the same year we met lovely NY Hainsies dear Ben, the ever hot Ant, the ever hot Jose, the sweet and talented and cute Jason (aka Broadway Bratt), etc.  Sweet people all of them.  But I digress.  The local production may not have been quite up to the original, but it was still very well done and very powerful.

I am back from the City of San Francisco and have reentered the rut of my life.

There is, however, renewal of energy and spirits and an exaltation that comes from a fantastic night in the theater.

"A Chorus Line" IS BACK!  And it's brilliant, scintillating, breathlessly paced and a magnificent entertainment.

This show is nearly perfect.  I say nearly because there is one lull that betrays itself when it occurs...it's just prior to "What I Did For Love".  Zach asks Diana and the others what they would do if they couldn't dance.  The stage is peopled with dancers...and each has something to say.  It's not uninteresting, but nothing is really said that is momentous or uplifting.  It seems this show has gone for 1 hour and 50 minutes at a breakneck pace and someone pulls it to a screeching halt to say, "Hey!  Let's take a break before THE BIG NUMBER."

"What I Did for Love" is a very nice song...and leads beautifully into the selection of the "four and four".  And then there's that finale....absolutely spectacular in all respects.

Several times during the show, the applause was prolonged and lusty, with cheers, whistles and shouts of "Bravo" and "Brava"!

This led to one other grievance -- I had no idea that when the curtain closed there'd be no opportunity for a standing "O" -- one the show richly deserves.

Apparently, if you don't do it within the final kicks (24?  27?  Someone told me how many, but I forget), it won't happen.

Should I ever see it again...I will attempt to lead the charge.  Don't know if I can find a ticket for next Saturday or not.  But if I can, I will be there.

For those going to see it in a month or so....YOU ARE GONNA BE THRILLED.

The cast is marvelous...Charlotte d'Amboise is amazing!  Every cast member acquits herself/himself beautifully...often brilliantly.

I've never felt such energy emanate from a stage!

While I'm posting, let me say this about something NOT thrilling or amazing or entertaining:

Friday night's episode of "Monk" was that show's worst-ever episode (at least, among the shows I've seen of it).  This was a 12-minute plotline conflated/inflated to 45-plus minutes of annoying eccentricities on the part of a leading actor whose schtick has overwhelmed him -- it's not funny, it's not clever and it's extraordinarily badly done.

I wanted to push my hand through the screen and grab Tony Shalhoub by the shoulders and throttle him soundly.

And that "moment" between the detective and his truant son at the end...that "look" of father-son bonding...was so sickeningly sappy I threw things at my
TV set.

Enough already.  The show has become a sad, pale imitation of its earlier, less-eccentric and more-tolerable self.  This episode is a prime example of what happens when creative talents beging working at the nadir of their craft.

Our seats were to the far right.  Naturally, anything that was stage right and behind the proscenium was blocked from our view.

Stage left, dear.

Unfortunately the sight lines were made more extreme because the production design places extentions (about two foot) on both sides of the proscenium. Also, I saw no technical or artistic reason why the extreme upstage left scenes could not have been played more center stage (in two cases, simply entending a cliff a few feet toward the center would have done the trick).

I did finally see the MONK episode that's gotten so much talk, and it also irritated the crap out of me. How could anyone mistake a Porta-Jon for a telephone kiosk (they don't look like booths any more)? Who in their right mind, obsessive-cumplusive or not, would touch a 400 watt heat lamp - TWICE! Beyond absurd. Or announce on stage about a critical piece of evidence that was needed? Or touch a piece of rubber tubing the killer used that might contain skin cells or fingerprints? And on and on.

On the other hand, when they were at the acupuncturist, I did laugh out loud as Monk touched the needles and the person underneath squirmed in pain. Cruel but it did make me laugh. That WAS in in the nature of his character since he has the need to touch pointed things like car antennas and the like.

Then I began watching MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. Warners did a masterful job priming this film for DVD though there are still minor scratches and some spots here and there. Some scenes are grainier than others, too, but much of it looks silky and gorgeous. Sound a bit on the tinny side, but the film is 70 years old and I'm sure they did the best with it they could.

I didn't quite get finished with it. With about thirty minutes to go, a friend from out of town (the one I went to see in HMS PINAFORE) dropped by completely unannounced. Was delighted to see him and we talked for over an hour, but I will still have MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY to finish, and likely as not, I won't get to finish it today.

I wasn't planning on staying on-line during the Emmys. So few people here watch a lot of prime time TV, and there wouldn't be much discussion going on like there is with the Tonys and Oscars.

I'll be interested to see if NBC broadcasts it in high definition. No network has yet broadcast the Emmys in high def. I doubt NBC will be the first.

Thanks, the other entertainer is Keb Mo (http://www.kebmo.com/).

As is normal, my brother and sister-in-law were supposed to be here at 3:00pm, well at 3:45 they were still nearly 2 hours away. LOL, I used to be disgusted, now I'm just amused.  some day they will be on time and I won't be anywhere close to ready for them to arrive!

I guess it's hit or miss with the Philadelphia Academy of Music and  touring companies.  I thought the use of the space for the WICKED tour in that theater far surpassed the use of space at the Gershwin on Broadway.

I will be absent this afternoon, because I am off to the local theater's annual dinner.  For some strange reason, this dinner in the last two years, has morphed into a barbecue.  It is fun, but missing is that once a year glitz and glamour that I always hated until I was forced into it; but always looked back on fondly.

Back from Grant's.  The final two stories are now formatted, and we entered all the corrections to the other five.  Now I have to proof the two newest, then go back and give a once-over to the other five.  We'll try to wrap this up on Tuesday.

We'd better have some kind of Emmy do here, because I'll be out seeing a show and I'd like to hear about the most egregious faux pas.

Here our paths diverge....except for the mercifully few "psychic-having-a-flash" acts Sean (sp?) pulls, I find the rest of the show beguilingly fresh and funny.

That said, those few moments are often quite annoying and bring the show down...for each moment that happens.  But the two guys always bring it back up afterward....for me.

My mom has been here for a couple of hours, too, and she's been fixing up the little garden area in front of my house.  She cleaned out the old daisies and weeds and put in new lavender plants.  I've been in my bedroom putting stuff that I want to keep in boxes, recycleable papers in a box for recycling, old clothes in bags and finding things that I should never have lost. ;)

I found the 1995 International Tour cast recording of Camelot that I have been looking for for a couple of years, now!  I ushered at the performance that came to Olympia in 1995 and bought the CD.  From what I remember, it's not bad, but it's not absolutely fabulous (I'll listen to it at work tomorrow).  It starred James Warwick as Arthur and Constance Curtis as Guenevere AND Daniel Narducci as Lancelot!  He recorded the new Bernstein Peter Pan with Linda Eder!  Who knew??  Not me!

Glory be, the Emmys ended on time! Actually, Conan signed off three minutes before the hour. First time that's happened in quite a while.

I have to say I thought the show was excellent. The opening routines of Conan falling, droppeing, or walking into various shows was hilarious for me, a full-time TV watcher. Seeing him interacting with some of my favorite characters was really fun.

And there were segments throughout to keep things fresh and funny. Conan is irreverent about the awards anyway so that keeps things from getting too solemn and stuffy.

Nice tributes to Dick Clark and Aaron Spelling though each went on a little longer than necessary for my taste.

As for the winners, well, like every year, I loved some of the choices, liked some of the choices, and wanted to put my fist through the screen with some of the picks. But it's that way with EVERY awards show I've ever watched.

And the show was not telecast in high definition either. I said this last year, and I'll say it again.

It is a SHAME AND DISGRACE that the Television Academy wouldn't want to have its awards broadcast in the highest quality possible. Yes, it would cost them more to do so, but for TV not to honor its own with the best possible quality broadcast says VOLUMES about the Academy's own estimate of itself.

Before the Emmys came on, I watched Wednesday night's PROJECT RUNWAY episode which was being rerun on Bravo. I can see why many of you folks love the show. It does get you caught up in the personalities of the designers, and it's easy to get rooting favorites quickly. This is the first episode I've ever watched, and I already know who I want to win. I'll watch the rest of the series just to see how my choice makes out. (Sorry - I can't say a name, this being my first time, I wasn't looking at names but rather faces and creations.)

Title: Re:CLEWLESS
Post by: Charles Pogue on August 27, 2006, 08:42:54 PM
The finale to DEADWOOD was majorly disappointing; as was the whole season frankly...the performances and individual scenes were fine, both the whole thing more or less added up to nothing and what there was was dissatisfying.  It's become like a big soap opera or the Twin Peaks wank job.  They keep you around hoping for a resolution to something that just turns out to be an inconclusive shaggy dog story.

Part of the reason that I no longer watch the Emmys (and the Oscars is about to follow hard on Emmys' heels for me) is that the mystique of stardom has been, thanks to crap shows like Entertainment  Tonight, magazines like People,  channels like E!, and even supposedly legitimate news shows, reduced to paltry celebrity.  When a rich non-entity like Paris Hilton can become a celebrity, you know that the magic has gone.  They all look small and little  these days and we know too much about them.  I believe Norma Desmond only gotten half-right.  Yes, "the pictures got small"; but so did the actors and actresses playing in them.

Still have 13 posts before we get past the all-time low. Here's one.

Yes, there were some disappointments at the Emmys: shows or actors who were passed over. On the other hand, the Emmys have always been slow to the party. It took THE SOPRANOS four tries to win the Emmy for Best Drama. WILL & GRACE didn't get nominated for any major awards until its second year. I LOVE LUCY lost all of its Emmy nominations its first year up for awards. THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW won Best Comedy Writing for its first year, but the show wasn't nominated as Best Comedy Series and neither were any of the actors that first year (then, it won Best Comedy Series its next four years.).

So, for those favorite shows that didn't win Best Drama (particularly surprised this one show went home empty handed; won't mention any names so as not to spoil it for the West Coast), take heart. There's always next year.

DR SWoody, I have found that the best way to deal with folks like this is to say, "Okay," and let them think they've won. You won't win, even though you are right.  It saves time and frustration.

Have to differ with Charles Pogue about DEADWOOD's season. I've been riveted by it all summer long. The tension George Hurst (Gerald McRaney) brought to the camp has been palpable for me, kept me on the edge of my seat every single week. I've laughed out loud with Calmity Jane and Wu and the weasely mayor (whose name escapes me).

Now, I haven't seen tonight's finale. It may indeed be a letdown, but I still have enjoyed tremendously all that has gone before.

When "Three's Company" started, Susan Sommers' character was just a ditzy blonde.  Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but still, a "real" character.  As the series went on, she morphed into a caricature that was so far from a realistic persona, that I totally lost interest in the entire show.

I feel like that happened with everyone on Friends too.  Instead of being people with quirky characteristics, they each became their respective quirky characteristic personified.

I watched the Emmy's, not to bad and kudos to everyone who actually got it to end on time.  I really liked Conan's opening bits, both pre-taped and live.  Overall I thought he did a great job of hosting.  Dick Clark's appearance was nice.  The original Charlie's Angels tribute to Aaron Spelling was lovely.  And I enjoyed the bit with Bob Hope.  I hope that doesn't give anything away.

I've spend the past few days recovering from a cold and as a result have spent many hours on the couch watching movies.  I ordered Hoodwinked and The Matador on demand.  Hoodwinked was a funny and smart animated film retelling the story of Little Red Riding Hood from different perspectives.  The Matador starred Pierce Brosnan as an aging hitman who gets involved with Greg Kinnear playing an everyman kind of role.  It was somewhat enjoyable, I didn't dislike it but didn't quite get the point of it all.  It was on the verge of something, what I don't know, but it didn't quite do it for me.

Today on the WE network, I watched the second half of the Jennifer Love Hewitt Audrey Hepburn tv movie from a few years ago, it was passable.  I also watched A Bunny's Tale, an old tv movie about Gloria Steinem's undercover work as a Playboy bunny in the 60's.  I found it very entertaining and it starred Kirstie Alley with a lot of other notable actresses in supporting roles- Joanna Kerns, Delta Burke, and Lela Rochon.

MattH, as I said, performances and individuals scenes were fine, but they keep promising events that they simply do not deliver and I felt like I've been strung along all summer without a real pay-off or denouement.  If it's true that they've cancelled it and will end it all with just two two hour movies, I can see why.  Viewers will get bored if you do not deliver on expectations.  They'll feel jerked around.  Tonight's episode, like most this season, ended with a whimper not a bang and with no promise of a pay-off next week.

Home from the concert. It was wonderful. I'm going to have to order a Keb Mo CD, he was fabulous and, of course, so was Bonnie. They did a few songs together and that had a special energy that was really wonderful.

Her father performed at the Orpheum in Sioux City a number of years ago and the staff gave her a copy of the program, which she said she was greatful to have. She talked about both of her parents and how much she missed them. Apparently they both died last year. I knew her father died then, I didn't realize she lost her mother last year, too.

I heard most of the songs I really wanted to hear, enjoyed her banter and hearing the songs off her new album.

Here are the lyrics to my favorite Keb Mo song of the night. It's a sweet song with very pleasant acoustic guitar.  The woman cheered like crazy for it

You don't need no fancy tricks
Painted eyes or glossy lips
I love you just the way you are
Hope you don't mind my beat up car

You don't need to change your dress
You don't need to change your shoes

Don't try to hide your natural looks
Forget about the cover let me read the book
Don't get me wrong I like them heels
But the way I feel is the way I feel

You don't need to change your dress
You don't need to change your shoes

Go ahead be wild and free
You don't have to shave your legs for me

Shave Yo' Legs~Keb' Mo'

So don't shave your legs for me
If you have kegs for me
Stay, little Ballantine, stay

My mom and sister left some time ago.  I got a load of laundry started and loaded a little bit of stuff into a box.  I'm pooped.  It's been a busy day and will be a busy week.

Back from dinner, show, and a dessert stop for pie.  Must now sit on my couch like so much fish for at least one hour.

I haven't seen the Bob Hope bit, but I agree with you about everything else.  I really liked the Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart bit.  That was funny!

I also agree with whoever commented on Candice Bergen's dress. :P

The first thing that popped into my head was Billy Joel singing,
"I love you just the way you are."

In place of the Emmy's I watched THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS...not a bad movie...the BEAST certainly made a mess out of lower Manhattan.

When I saw this as a kid I always thought it was sort of slow...too much talk, talk, talk and I wanted more monster...but as an adult I appreciated the talky scenes a bit more, mainly because that Paul Christian was kind of nice to look.

...and the cast...the wardrobe lady must have had a grudge against poor Paula Raymond...I never saw such ugly clothes as what she wore in this movie!
