Well, you've read the notes, the notes labored to have no labor, and now it is time for you to post until the laborious cows come home.

I'd been working on my room off and on for quite a while and I still haven't found the Netflix DVD that I lost misplaced and paid for and want to keep! >:( The movie, "Latter Days," is about a Mormon on a mission who admits that he's gay.  He accepts it, falls in love and has to deal with his family...and find a new one.  I think it's quite good.  AND since I paid for it, I want to find it.

Good night, all.

Good morning, all!  I had a very restless night of peculiar dreams and a few nightmares.  I'd like to sleep in longer, but I have much to do today.  I finally located the LITTLE BY LITTLE band parts from the recording and I have to assemble them, stamp them with my name, and photocopy them for use in this upcoming concert production.

I'm hoping, as well, that my Toyland colleagues in North Carolina will have the last two stock arrangements put into score for my perusal.  I need to fill in some instrumentation on one of the dance charts, so it would be nice to look at  it a bit before proceeding.

This is my day for checking in on my dad.  I hope all is well.[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

Watched a short documentary on the BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS and saw the name of Friend of BK - Mr David Wechter.

As for Edith Head not winning the OSCAR for those overdone rags in TO CATCH A THIEF....didn't bother me.  I thought the costumes for LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING were lovely.  Edit Head always thought nothing succeeds like excess.  I think she spent too many years with DeMille.

Good morning!

If I have to have a birthday, at least it landed on a beautiful day. It's going to be warmer than yesterday, and I can already feel humidity that we didn't have yesterday, but all in all, it should be a pleasant day.

Thank you so much for the kind wishes, DRs George, Elmore, Ginny, S. Woody, JRand, Jennifer, and Grand Poobah bk.

I was born a little after 9 a.m. in the morning, so my actual time of birth came and went while I was reading more of the Paul Lynde biography. Kind of appropriate, I guess.

As for today's viewing, I haven't a clue where that will take me. I do want to get ON DANGEROUS GROUND watched just so I can make a bigger dent in that last box of Warners film noirs.

I may go ahead and watch SAN FRANCISCO, too, even though I watched the videotape of it just a few months ago. Still, I'm expecting much improved video quality on the DVD.

Good Morning, All!

I just put the Cabaret West Calendar and Newsletter to bed. The Calendar should be up on the site either today or tomorrow http://www.cabaretwest.org (http://www.cabaretwest.org).

Here are some tidbits from the newsletter ...

MARNI NIXON, called "The Ghostess with the Mostest" for the many singing voices she dubbed in film (Deborah Kerr in The King & I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), will be appearing at Theatre West in Hollywood next month. She's just written her memoirs and will participate in a free book signing, discussion, and singing event on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Drama Book Shop in New York City (250 West 44th Street).

New CD Release I recommend:

D.C. ANDERSON -- I AM STILL -- 15 tracks (all original). D.C. is at his contemplative best as he collaborates on all new songs with Roy Zimmerman, Steven Landau, Elizabeth Doyle, Ritt Henn, Geoff Packard, and David Robison. Releases September 12. Purchase from http://www.lmlmusic.com (http://www.lmlmusic.com) and Amazon. LML Special: Receive a free copy of D.C's BALLAD album with any new order on the website for the entire month of September. More at http://www.dcanderson.net (http://www.dcanderson.net).

DR Donna - how delightful to see Eloise in your post this morning!  Are you a fan?  When I was 5 or 6, my sister took me to the book department in the downtown Detroit J. L. Hudson store to meet Kay Thompson and have her autograph my copy of the first Eloise book.  Fun, fun, fun.

Announcing an HHW get-together in NYC on Saturday evening, Sept. 30th around 8 p.m.

Place:  a restaurant in the theater district, to be determined once we know approximately how many people are coming

Finances: every person pays for his or her own food & drink

Reason for the get-together:  BK will be in town and at this particular get-together

If you can come:  Email me at my AOL address Dylan43rd  - ASAP, but let's pick a random date for RSVP'ing of Sept. 15th so that we'll have plenty of time to make a reservation

Happy Happy Birthday, DR Matt!!!! Have a lovely day!

Congrats, Georgie-Boy!!! Oh, baby! Welcome to the wonderful world of Home Ownership! Many joys to you!

Jane - oh, puppy! When do you get the baby??? Whatta dawg! I'll be passing by next Monday - too early? Next trip??

So the workshop yesterday apparently inspired most of the attendees - they all brought stuff to read at the Open Mike in Woodinville, where I was the Featured Reader. That was so nice.

I read a chapter I had deleted from Jewish Thighs. The chapter had been left over from when the manuscript began life as a funny diet book. It's called: DO-IT YOURSELF AVERSION THERAPY. I got so many good laughs! So I may just tweak it here and there, and send it in as a possible article for a women's mag or something. I had forgotten how strange and funny it is - but that's why I kept it in the manuscript for too long.

I'm actually in the mood for a rainy day.  I want to finish Mockingbird.  Just got through TKAM becoming a best seller and Nelle (Harper) hiding out in Alabama to get away from the press etc.

I also want to cook.   I bought some turkey thighs I'm going to roast.  Then I'm thinking of making some dressing with apples and onions in it.  I picked up that one from Rachael Ray and really love it. I also got some fresh brussel sprouts and can have fresh peaches on vanilla ice cream for dessert. mmmm

Actually, I think I'll tweak it a little and make it more like a chef salad with the dressing on top.  I'm not crazy about the idea of mixing the ham, turkey, and cheese into the dressing.  This was the signature dish at the dining rooms in the J. L. Hudson stores.

What's in Maurice salad?

Here's another (note: no mustard or olives; chicken in place of turkey)

Quote
J. L. HUDSON MAURICE DRESSING AND SALAD
Printed from COOKS.COM

MAURICE DRESSING:

1 pt. mayonnaise
3 tbsp. finely chopped parsley
1 tbsp. finely chopped onion
2 hard boiled eggs, finely chopped

Mix real well, if too thick add a little milk. Yields about 4 servings.

MAURICE SALAD:

Shred one medium lettuce.
Shred one half pound ham.

Shred one half pound Swiss cheese.

Shred one half pound chicken breast (about 1).

Shred 8 or 10 sweet gherkins.

Toss all together lightly. Make sure it is well mixed.

DR Ginny,
Yes, I'm a great fan of Kay Thompson's. I loved her flamboyance. Never had the opportunity to meet her, though. How exciting for you! The latest book, Eloise Takes a Bawth, was so much fun. It's too bad Kay and Hilary Knight had that falling out. Still not clear as to what happened, but it's the reader's loss, that's for sure.

After her death, I read that she had been living with Liza Minnelli (she's Liza's godmother). I hope Liza will get around to writing her memoirs so we can find out more about Kay. I saw a wonderful photo in Vanity Fair of Kay in her nightlub act with the [Andy] Williams Brothers.

The show is fairly short, over by 9:50 at the latest (no intermission), so it wouldn't be that terribly late a night.

The latest book, Eloise Takes a Bawth, was so much fun. It's too bad Kay and Hilary Knight had that falling out. Still not clear as to what happened, but it's the reader's loss, that's for sure.

The article in   VANITY FAIR (http://www.eloisewebsite.com/library/9612_vanityfair.htm) offers some insights:

Quote
A few weeks before Eloise was published, Hilary Knight received a call from Thompson's secretary asking for a meeting. Knight was handed a one-page agreement to sign. Thompson had written an unusual addendum to her publishing contract. She would own the copyright to Knight's drawings, and any future Eloise books would be locked in at the same royalty split as the first-70 percent for Thompson and 30 percent for Knight. "I totally trusted her," Knight said. "I signed it without really looking at it. I totally signed my rights away." During the years of their collaboration, Knight would occasionally raise the subject with Thompson. Finally she agreed to discuss the onerous contract with Morris Ernst, a distinguished literary lawyer. "Ernst got nowhere with her. He was overwhelmed by her," Knight said. Nevertheless, Knight and Thompson soldiered on.

In the summer of 1966, Hilary Knight returned to Rome to work with Kay Thompson on their fifth Eloise collaboration. Knight had drawn hundreds of sketches for a new idea-Eloise lolling in an overflowing bathtub and deluging movie stars in fox coats and the Plaza hotel's long-suffering manager, Mr. Salomone. Knight recalled the atmosphere between them as odd and frenetic. Thompson hung his drawings all over the studio and snapped, "Think of this as a movie." They worked all day long and into the night. Thompson would compliment Knight's sketches-"That's great, Hil" but the next morning, he recalled, "that drawing that was so glorious would have a big clot of rubber cement on it, and there would be a piece of paper over the drawing." She refused to accept any of his suggestions. In the end, the idea was too thin to sustain. Even the working title seemed false and affected: Eloise Takes a Bawth.

Thompson's alliance with Hilary Knight resembled most closely the partnership of Lewis Carroll and John Tenniel. As with Tenniel's drawings for Alice in Wonderland, the charm of Eloise was greatly enhanced by Knight's vision, but Thompson insisted on complete control. At times, the writer and the artist were so exasperated with each other that their editor had to write to Knight urging him to stay calm. They would become strained, imagining slights and betrayals where once there had been a productive, even joyous exchange of ideas.

Last year Eloise turned 40, but Thompson continues to freeze out Hilary Knight. "She is totally turned off by me. And I honestly can't tell you why," he says. Thompson is consumed by rage and tells friends that Knight continues to draw Eloise. "All he is entitled to is a share of the royalties," she told Rex Reed. "Eloise has another life, and I am planning it right now."

Dakota, I didn’t read LIKE WATER LIKE CHOCOLATE.  I hope the book was far superior to the movie.

We should get our puppy on September 23rd, which one it will be of the five in the litter we still don't know.

I wish you well when you get your new baby...

I loved the book. There even little recipes throughout the book. The recipes are an intregal part of the novel.

BIG BROTHER 7 -- SPOILER

Go on....you know you want to read....

SPOILER

...but if you really don't want to read, go no  further....

SPOILER

...'cause I'm not joking now.  I'm gonna spill some beans!

SPOILER

After all that hoo-haw....guess who won, breaking James' record?

I guess that gave it away, since only Janelle was near his record.  Janelle won.  She must nominate Will if she uses the POV on herself.

And then she will have to vote either Will or Erika out of the house.

Money is on Erika....because she's the one most likely to win an endurance compeitition, which is what the final HOH generally consists of, at least in part (they have been in three parts in the past).

I'd love to see Janelle and Erika make a pact to ditch ChillTown and go to the final two together.  Truth is, though, Erika wouldn't do that as long as Mike is in the house...so, I guess Erika will just have to go.

We shall see.

Earlier this week, when BK's topic sent me down my Michigan memory lane I found a recipe for Maurice salad, which was a Detroit specialty.

For your  Michegan Memory Book:

From the Oakland Press (http://www.theoaklandpress.com/stories/042304/mar_20040423011.shtml)

Quote
Whether you're an old Hudson's restaurant diehard or couldn't care less about such old faves as its Maurice Salad, cheese soup or chicken pot pie, the new Lakeshore Grill at Marshall Field's in Oakland Mall should satisfy either way.

If you like cheese, one of the Hudson's holdovers is Canadian cheese soup with sautéed vegetables ($2.95 cup, $3.95 bowl); it didn't disappoint. The soup was cheesy and tasty, and the vegetables were minimal so as to enhance, not to interfere with what has to be one of the cheesiest soups we've encountered. It's so rich you may want to consider sharing a bowl.

My companion ordered what is arguably the defining Hudson's favorite, the Maurice salad ($8.50). It was as we remembered, with shredded lettuce, julienne ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, sweet gherkin relish and of course Maurice dressing. Nothing has changed with the Maurice, and that is compliment enough for this classic.

Everyone, it seems, wanted to know if the Hudson's ice cream puff was still on the menu and indeed it is ($3.95). A cream puff shell split, filled with ice cream and topped with Sanders hot fudge - worth the trip for just the fudge.

Hungry?

I also want to cook.   I bought some turkey thighs I'm going to roast.  Then I'm thinking of making some dressing with apples and onions in it.  I picked up that one from Rachael Ray and really love it. I also got some fresh brussel sprouts and can have fresh peaches on vanilla ice cream for dessert. mmmm

Are they Jewish thighs?

Found some really cool stuff in the boxes - totally forgot I had some of this.  Still haven't found the box I'm looking for, but I may need someone to come over and help me completely rearrange the garage, as it's really confusing and I need to maximize the space in there anyway.

Dontcha love the direction to garnish the plate with 2 olives.  Not 1, not 3, 2!  I think I'll be wild and crazy and use 3 or 4 per plate!  DH Richard really likes olives.

Well to keep DH happy, use this recipe from  Mon's Zone (http://www.momzone.com/vBulletin/showpost.php?p=32741&postcount=1).

This calls from one cup of olives added to to the salad - so your can fish out extras for DH.

A note on Poker:

From the  Associated Press (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BOAT_CRASH?SITE=CALON&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)

Quote
WILLIS, Okla. (AP) -- Steve Dover was vacationing at Lake Texoma when he saw two speedboats boats take off for a poker competition. They never returned.
...
The boats collided during the High Roller Poker Run on Saturday. Four people died at the scene and two were flown to the hospital, where one later died, according to the patrol.

Philippi said Gordon Mineo was the organizer of the poker run, in which participants get a playing card at each of five different stops along the lake and then compare their cards at the end of the game. The team with the best poker hand wins.

"They were still involved in the poker run when the accident took place," she said

Wouldn't simple dealing be safer?

Just posting this again, since it may have gotten lost amidst the mirth and merriment of last night's frenzies and such:

Announcing an HHW get-together in NYC on Saturday evening, Sept. 30th around 8 p.m.

Place:  a restaurant in the theater district, to be determined once we know approximately how many people are coming

Finances: every person pays for his or her own food & drink

Reason for the get-together:  BK will be in town and at this particular get-together

If you can come:  Email me at my AOL address Dylan43rd  - ASAP, but let's pick a random date for RSVP'ing of Sept. 15th so that we'll have plenty of time to make a reservation

I HATE "SUMMER RERUNS"!! ;)

And now...I REALLY must pull myself away from all the fun and frivolity of HHW.

In a little while (a Once Upon a Mattress reference ;)), my sister, niece and I will be going downtown to enjoy the last day of Olympia Harbor Days (http://www.harbordays.com/)!

Harbor Days is an annual festival where tugboats return to the southernmost tip of Puget Sound for three days of entertainment, food, art, history, and a last farewell to the summer. Vintage, working and retired tugboats are moored at Olympia's Percival Landing. Many of them are open for tour on Saturday of the festival. Be on hand at noon Sunday as the tugs leave shore to participate in the Annual Harbor Days Tugboat Races, out in the deep channel of the bay.

After that, we're going to drive around the condo complex to see if very many of the units have garages.  I didn't notice too many, but I wasn't looking before.  Now that I have one, I want to know how rare they are...in this complex. ;D

Now that I have one, I want to know how rare they are...in this complex. ;D

Little Toot!

I watched a couple of things this afternoon. Started off with the third from the last episode of THE WILD WILD WEST's first season. This one had to do with a scientist who had invented a potion that could make one move so fast, he would be invisible to others. The potion was made from liquid diamonds, so he had to keep stealing them to be able to make the potion.

The name of the guest star didn't ring a bell, but he was almost as handsome as star Robert Conrad. That didn't happen very often during this series.

Then I put in a POIROT episode entitled "The Double Clue." This is the one where Poirot falls in love with a Russian baroness and seemingly neglects the investigation of some high class jewelry thefts.

Seems that once again there were problems with the challenge.  Other players "hooks" broke but not Janelle's.  I still think it's fixed and I think that's disgusting

Dinner was just wonderful, but I naturally overate and felt overstuffed by the time I got home. Since my favorite close-by Chinese restaurant closed well over a year ago, I haven't had it very much, so I was really hungry for it. A nice way to end a pleasant birthday if ONLY I hadn't overeaten.

GREY'S ANATOMY tonight I hadn't seen, and though it wasn't as dramatic an episode as some others, it still had some heartrending moments, particularly a final speech by guest star Laurie Metcalf to her daughter. (I believe she was Emmy nominated for this performance but lost to Patricia Clarkson for SIX FEET UNDER.)

And I did love intern Alex standing up to Dr. Burke tonight. He's usually portrayed as such a selfish bastard that it was nice to see him actually on the right side for a change.

And, of course, it's hard not to fall in love with Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Izzy's patient/boy friend. (Not to spoil things but I'm wondering if he'll survive the attack he was undergoing on the season finale of SUPERNATURAL.)

He lost a little respect when he paraded an infant in front of a croc.

Well, now he lost his life! Oh my!

Stephen Robert "Steve" Irwin (22 February 1962 – 4 September 2006) was the owner and manager of the Australia Zoo at Beerwah, Queensland, Australia. He was best known as The Crocodile Hunter, which was the name of the unconventional nature documentary series on television he hosted, assisted by his American-born wife, Terri Irwin. His larger-than-life persona and seemingly outrageous antics (including the close handling of both common and rare species of wildlife and, perhaps most famously, the capture of live crocodiles and other reptiles on-screen) were key features in the presentation, which provided a forum for educational information about wildlife conservation and conflicts with humans in various parts of the world. The program had made the Irwins television personalities on several continents.

On September 4, 2006 shortly after 11:00 AM local time, Irwin was killed in a marine accident while filming an underwater documentary in the Batt Reef off the Low Isles near Port Douglas, north of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. A stingray barb penetrated his chest causing a fatal wound, per the Cairns police.[1]

Born in Essendon, a suburb of Melbourne, Steve Irwin moved with his parents as a child to Queensland. His parents, Bob and Lyn, ran the small Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, where Steve grew up around crocodiles and other reptiles. He became a crocodile trapper, removing crocodiles from near populated areas, performing the service for free with the quid pro quo that he kept them for the park. As a child, he had a negative encounter with a macaw, which throughout his life left him with a fear of parrots.

In 1991, he took over the running of the park, now renamed the "Australia Zoo", and in 1992 met (at the park) and married Terri. The footage, shot by John Stainton, of their crocodile-trapping honeymoon became the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter, which became wildly successful in America.

In 2001, Steve appeared in a cameo role in the Eddie Murphy film Dr. Dolittle 2. In 2002, his first feature film, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, was released. In general, reviews of this film were negative. However, in 2003, Irwin was reportedly in line to host a chat show on Australian network television.

The Irwins have two children: a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin (born 24 July 1998), and a son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin (born 1 December 2003). Their dog, Sui, from which their daughter's middle name was derived, died in June 2004.

Under Steve's expansive leadership, the operations have grown to include the zoo, the television series, The Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, and International Crocodile Rescue. Improvements to his Australia Zoo include the Animal Planet Crocoseum, the rainforest aviary, and Tiger Temple.

Major controversy arose during a public show on 2 January 2004, when Irwin carried his infant son, Bob, in one arm while feeding a chicken carcass to a crocodile with the other hand. The infant was close to the crocodile, and comparisons were made in the press with Michael Jackson's dangling of his son outside a German apartment window. In addition, child welfare groups, animal rights groups, and many of Irwin's television viewers criticised his actions as being irresponsible and tantamount to child abuse. Irwin claimed that any danger to his son was only a perceived danger and that he was in complete control of the situation, and has consistently refused to apologize for his actions despite considerable public outcry both in Australia and abroad. His defenders pointed to his several decades of hands-on experience and direct interaction with crocodiles. Terri Irwin claimed that their child was in no more real danger than a child being taught to swim would be. No charges were filed (although the police did visit Irwin at his home and advised him not to repeat the incident).

Irwin went on to star in other Animal Planet documentaries, including The Croc Files, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries, and New Breed Vets.

In June 2004, Irwin again was the subject of controversy when allegations were made that he came too close to and disturbed some wildlife (namely whales, seals and penguins) while filming a documentary in Antarctica. Interacting with Antarctic wildlife in a disapproved manner may be a breach of Australian federal and international laws. Subsequently, the matter was closed without charges being filed.

Animal Planet then released a Crocodile Hunter special called "Crocodiles & Controversy", which attempted to explain both the "Baby Bob Incident" and the Antarctica incident. This special argues that Irwin's son was never in danger of being eaten by the crocodile and that Irwin could not have endangered animals in Antarctica.

Animal Planet ended the The Crocodile Hunter with a series finale entitled "Steve's Last Adventure". The last Crocodile Hunter documentary went for three emotional hours with footage of Steve's across-the-world adventure, visiting locations like the Himalayas, the Yangtze River, Borneo, and the Kruger National Park.

In January 2006 as part of Australia Week celebrations in the USA, Steve appeared at the Pauley Pavilion, UCLA Los Angeles, California. During an interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Steve announced that Discovery Kids will be developing a show for his daughter, Bindi Sue.[2] The show, Jungle Girl, was tipped to be similar to The Wiggles movies, with songs that surround a story. A feature-length episode of Australian kids TV show The Wiggles entitled "Wiggly Safari" appears dedicated to Steve, and he features in it heavily with his wife and daughter. The show includes the song "Crocodile Hunter, Big Steve Irwin".

On Saturday June 24, 2006, one of the oldest turtles living in Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, died of heart failure. The turtle, Harriet, was 176 years old and was considered part of Irwin's family. Harriet was thought to have belonged to Charles Darwin.

Steve Irwin was active in politics and was a supporter of the conservative Liberal Party of Australia. In particular, he strongly supported the incumbent Prime Minister John Howard.

It's basically a burger on a bun with grilled onions...but I don't like grilled onions (I prefer raw), so I didn't have any onions.  My sister did.  But then you can also have it with cheese or not and one or two patties.  And new this year is a Demo Garden Burger.  All are very good.

Let me see if this works:

Breaking news here in OZ.  Steve Crocodile Irwin died after being stung by a  Stingray off the coast of Queensland.  I know there are some fans in the U S of A. (More than here).

:o I never watched his show, but I know a couple of people at work who loved it!

I haven't either.  I was reminded of it a few days ago when there were clips of the memorial to Aaron Spelling, who produced it.
