Title: BEATING A HASTY RETREAT
Post by: bk on September 09, 2006, 12:20:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you took the notes' lead and you beat a hasty retreat, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're on a hasty retreat and won't be back until Monday at the earlierst.

If you beat a hasty retreat, is there an awards ceremony afterwards?  And who wins the bronze?

I want pics, by the way.

And the word of the day is: OBSTRUENT!
NO BUTTERS could lubricate little Orville's nasal pasages enough to loosen the OBSTRUENT pieces of candy corn he had stuck up there.  It was as if he had developed a gigantic SNOT TUBER, and would have to breathe through his mouth for the rest of his life.

TOD - Since I so often get morning shifts at work, I'm up fairly early in the morning, but I also get home in the early afternoon.  I generally like to lay myself down, take the weight off my feet, and take a nap.  Buster and Bonnie are usually there, even before I horizontalize, waiting to shower me with affection and saliva.  Pretty soon, Fletcher the overweight Dalmatian will also lumber in, climb up onto the bed and over me, and he will lie down next to me.  The problem is, once he lays down, his weight will settle, and he's big enough that his flab (there's no other word for it) will roll on top of me.  If I try to move out of the way, he simply rolls a little closer, and gravity does it's thing so I end up with a ton of spots atop me once more.

It should be nice during the winter, of course, having this loving hot water bottle to keep me warm, but right now the temperature is still temperate.  Such is life here in Rehoboth.

Good morning, all!  I'm off to Toyland and then to the NYPL Theatre Collection.  I hope to have a rewarding day of research.

DR DerBrucer, I sneaked a peek at the site around 2 AM this morning and you caught me.  I had been awakened around 1:15 AM by the sound of someone ringing the front doorbell.  Could be pranksters, could be criminals, I don't care; I called 911, reported it, and went back to bed.  At 1:50 the police rang my bell to check on the status of my 911 call.  They were very kind and advised me to call the next time it happens,  I checked my emails, looked in on the site for a moment andf went back to bed.

DR MBarnum, I'm elated to learn you've taken up reading.  You never asked me to return the copy of THE BOBBSEY TWINS AT THE FARM that you left here and I just assumed that 3-4 syllable words were something that would always prove difficult.  Whatever happened to the underwear you left behind?  Didn't I auction it?  :-*

DR JRand56, how did your show go last night?DR Tomovoz, did someone else besides the Andrews Sisters record "Carmen's Boogie?"

TOD:  Thank God for the VCR!

Saturday morning greetings!  I'm at work, too, with a full day of information waitressing ahead.

DR Elmore - could we plan a trip to the NYPL theater collection October 2 (afternoon, maybe before an Artie's dinner?), 3, or 4?  And is your recording office anywhere near the area bounded by Ninth and Tenth Avenues and 21st and 14th Streets?  Richard and I want to spend a day in that vicinity visiting Chelsea Market and General Theological Seminary.

DR Ginny, the Lincoln Center library is closed on Mondays, so Oct. 2 is out (funding, ya know); most museums and libraries are dark on Mondays.  Want to think of another number between 2 and 7?

Yes, the office is not far from 21st Street:  124th and Seventh Avenue

Hate the opera, it's too highbrow
But there's one number I can dig right now
Just like driving without a clutch
I ride the boogie with the Carmen touch!
It rips up floors and tears down walls
And it's the reason that Niagra Falls . . .

That one?

I thought Patty, Maxine and Laverne were the only ones to record it!

Music is my favorite way to relax.....a nice soundtrack....or an opera....

Which reminds me of George Axelrod's axim for The Girl in "The Seven Year Itch."

"Yes."

I like Laura a lot....but I agree she won't make it to the end.  The previews seem to indicate some kind of drama concerning her this week on Pwoject Wunway.

I think Mr BK's life would make an interesting reality TV show....certainly MORE interesting than BLOWOUT or THE OSBORNES.

Good morning!

Another cool night and another hot day with the high supposed to go to 85 (tomorrow as well). I'm not complaining. I'm sleeping very well with the cool nights we're being given. I can stay inside to escape the heat and humidity that the South seems to have in excess in the late summer.

Unless I'm not feeling up to par, I try not to take naps during the day because they invariably affect my sleep at night.

I do like to lie back on the sofa with a book I'm thoroughly familiar with and simply skim the contents. Occasionally I'll pick up things I've forgotten or facts I wasn't aware of by doing this.

If I had a hot tub or jacauzzi, I'm sure I'd use it often.

I have one more WILL & GRACE episode to be able to finish up the Season 5 boxed set. After that, I have a long film - SAN FRANCISCO -  and a short film - ON DANGEROUS GROUND ready for viewing.

I also have that Marlene Dietrich 1973 London concert on DVD that I found used and will watch while I prepare and eat lunch today.

With nothing on TV tonight of interest to me, I'll be looking for something entertaining to consume the evening. Will probably be a previously viewed item.

I've been reading that the HD-DVD version of THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD is coming out near the end of this month, so I may take the standard definition (Ultra-Resolution) version of it off the shelf and see how it looks tonight. My memory is that it looks terrific.

TOD:

I have 2 different ways of relaxing/resting/calming the mind during the daytime hours.

If the weather isn't too hot, I like to take a slow walk around the entire backyard at our house, and I actually stop and look at, and talk to each tree that we have.  We have over 40 producing fruit trees, and I tell them how nice they look, how much more they've grown, etc.  I know it sounds crazy, but DP Kerry already knows that I'm certifiable.

The other is to stretch out on our wonderful "sleep number" bed, maybe read a little, and have Sugar hop up beside me.  There is a definite soothing influence from just being in the close proximity to an animal that is also resting......I don't know why.

Before I foget, I must thank elmore's comments about "Imagining You."  Luckily I checked, and it was NYC Gay Men's Chorus, and the wonderfl arrangemnt was indeed by Larry.  SO, Larry people are not stealing this particualr work (that I am aware of), but it's a lovely piece and would make a great solo for someone totally  out of the context of the show (hear that Jason, Kevin, Liz Callaway),. Based on your recommendations, I will give the cst album another listen.  I still get the feeling though that it works better within the play itself.

LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
THE MARBLE FAUN
by Adam Green
Issue of 2006-03-06

In the film, Mrs. Beale says, “Jerry’s out every night with a different girl.” In fact, Torre’s life outside Grey Gardens centered on local gay night spots, such as the Attic. And he often drove into the city to spend evenings cruising bathhouses in a towel (he says he was voted Mr. Club Baths 1977) or dancing in his jockstrap on the bar at the Anvil.

Though she didn’t appear in the Maysleses’ movie, Jacqueline Onassis turns up in the musical, as the young Jackie Bouvier. Torre recalls meeting Onassis when she visited Grey Gardens. He says that she used to call the house occasionally, to check on her aunt and cousin, and that she once asked him to take her out clubbing. He remembers bringing her to the Anvil, where they watched a fire-eating drag contortionist perform. Afterward, Onassis’s driver took them back to her building, where she invited Torre up for a drink. “I said no thanks,” he said. “I went back to the Anvil.”

The other day Torre attended a preview of “Grey Gardens,” the musical, in which the role of Jerry is played by a square-jawed young actor named Matt Cavenaugh. He wears a Newsday sweatshirt and a painter’s cap, as Torre did as a teen-ager, and what looks like a Beatles wig. Torre’s eyes teared up several times during the show, particularly when, after a song called “Jerry Likes My Corn,” the stage Jerry said, “You be good now, Mrs. Beale—you take care of yourself.”

As some DRs might remember, the "Anvil" was a notorious gay sleeze bar on the lower westside. (Don't ask!)

Mayor, Councilman Also Resign Amid Backlash Over Internet Postings
By TIM TALLEY, AP

SNYDER, Okla. (Sept. 8) - The police chief, the mayor and a councilman from this small, southwestern Oklahoma town resigned Friday, saying they were fed up with the public attention and criticism they received after the chief's wife appeared in various nude poses on a Web site and the photos began circulating around town.

Earlier Friday, the chief said the whole issue involving his 43-year-old wife had been blown out of proportion.
"People in this country do what she does on a daily basis," he said. "It's absolutely ludicrous. Makes no sense at all."

He said he has had lengthy discussions with his wife about the photos but does not tell her what to do.

"My wife is 6-foot-3 and weighs 300 pounds," he said. "If there is somebody that thinks they can control her, have at it. I have tried for 11 years and haven't been able to."

My Garage Sale went very well. Sold almost everything and gave the rest to the cleaning lady who came just as it ended - and who does NOT have an Evil Eye.

This was a great way to get to know some of my neighbors. A number of others were also having garage sales - and I spent a bit of the money I made at mine buying things at theirs. Well, at one anyway. The woman next-door had some phenomenal vintage stuff which she was selling for a dollar a garment. How could I resist? I now own a vintage 50's Hawaiian design dress that looks like it could have come out of From Here to Eternity.
I'm going out for lunch with some of the neighbors as a post-garage sale celebration. This was not something I was planning - as I'm invited out to dinner tonight - but I didn't want to say no. So lunch will be breakfast, I guess, because I didn't have time to eat before the Garage Sale (people descend on you at 6 AM!).
And that's the report from here.

I saw a preview of it a month or so ago. I didn't like it - but that's my personal opinion. You might love it. Bob Hoskins was terrific. Ben Affleck was fine, as was Diane Lane. But the real star of the film is Adrien Brody - and I didn't care for him or that whole (fictional)story. It's not a subplot - it's a another main plot. And they should have had faith in the Reeves story carrying the entire film. It could have and perhaps should have.

I didn't get to the Dietrich DVD. I still had the final WILL & GRACE episode from Season 5 to watch, and I did. This was the one on Karen's yacht after she's gotten Stan's money in his will; Jack and Will appear to have slept together after a drunken night of partying, and Karen is pushed overboard by Stan's mistress Lorainne Finster.

I watched a couple of what they call "themed featurettes" which are just montages of images from the season's episodes around a central theme. After a couple of those, I was bored with them.

So, I took out the DVD of the final WILL & GRACE episode and watched it, followed by the documentaries on the making of the show on that disc. Brought a tear to my eye. Whatever weaknesses the show had in its final years (and it was much weaker than it was at its zenith), I will still miss having it around when the new season commences.

Boujour tout le monde!

A little Song Of The South info from:

http://disneybooks.blogspot.com/
This blog is by a French fellow and is all in English!!

------------
And here is Jim Korkis' last article of the week!

VOICES SINGING THE SONGS OF THE SOUTH

Currently I am working on an extensive article on Disney's SONG OF THE SOUTH for the magazine, Hogan's Alley, and here is a research vignette on some of the uncredited vocal work in that film:

Much of the uncredited singing was done by the Hall Johnson Choir, an African American choir led by Hall Johnson (a highly regarded African American choral director, composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist) that performed to enthusiastic audiences in various prestigious New York venues. National recognition came when Johnson's choir performed under his direction in Marc Connelly's Broadway production of "Green Pastures" in 1930.

Five years later, Johnson took the choir to Hollywood, California to participate in the film version of "Green Pastures"(1936). Johnson and the choir remained in the Hollywood area and appeared in other films including "Hearts Divided" (1936), "Banjo On My Knee" (1936), "Lost Horizon" (1937), "Tales of Manhattan" (1942) and "Cabin In the Sky" (1943). Their performances also included the crows in Disney's "Dumbo" (1941) and "Song of the South" (1946). Johnson returned to New York in 1946 where he organized the Festival Negro Choir of New York. He was posthumously honored for his work in films by being elected to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1975, five years after his death.

The DeCastro Sisters were a female singing group: they consisted of Peggy, Cherie, and Babette DeCastro. In 1945, the DeCastro family moved to the United States from Cuba and the sisters became protégées of Carmen Miranda. They had a style similar to the popular Andrews Sisters trio but with a Latin flavor. It was probably their connection with Miranda who had worked with Disney on "The Three Caballeros" that helped get them their first film work doing some singing background vocals for "Zip A Dee Do Dah" in "Song of the South".

AND a little pic to go with it!

In the "small world" department ...... I enjoyed you sharing the musical information regarding "Song Of The South."  I was aware of Hall Johnson's participation and contribution to the film (and also "Cabin In The Sky" which I love!), but I'll bet you might be surprised to read that I once sang with Hall Johnson !  In the late 1950s, he would sometimes tour to high schools, do several days of rehearsal with their top choir, and then present a program to the student body assembly.  It was great fun to do, and he was a warm and friendly man who got the best out of our choir.  Our choir, by the way, was not too shabby....we had a great regular choral director and we won quite a few competitions.

However, I didn't know that the DeCastro Sisters were doing background vocals!!

BK talking about the book fair made me feel deprived, so I took a drive up to Cincinnati and went to the old book haunt of my youth, Ohio Book Store, in downtown Cincy...four floors of books.  It was sunny and bright, both on the drive up and back and a beautiful day for an hour's jaunt each way(...probably took BK that long just to get to Santa Monica from the Oaks of Sherman and back and it's only about ten or 12 as opposed to the 60 I was travelling).

Found some early Ibsen, a child's souvenir story book of Alexander Korda's Thief of Baghdad (15 bucks...this would probably be 50-100 in LA), the play Room Service, and a rather old book called Frightful Plays which I know nothing about, but has nice illoes in it.  All for a grand total of 33 bucks (Thief included in that total).

Stopped over the river in Newport, Ky, at Dixie Chili for my two cheese coneys with onions and my four-way with onions (Cincinnati chili over spaghetti, topped with grated cheese! Yum!) and drove home listening to Bobby Vee and a recording of a TV playlet by Richard Rodgers of ANDROCLES & THE LION, starring beloved British comic Norman Wisdom, John Cullum, Inga Swenson, Ed Ames, and Noel Coward.  All in all, a lovely day...

When I got back home, I called The Lovely Wife in Lexington at her sister's. She said it was pouring rain there and they had had a power failure.  But here in Georgetown...not 12 miles away...it's still gorgeous!  Not a dark cloud in the sky!

The book fair was amusing.  The prices, usually ridiculous by anyone's standards, were completely out of control and guess what - no one was buying anything, at least that I could see.  Even the dealers who are usually a bit less than others were outrageous.   I do believe it's like the real estate market - that is beginning what I believe will be a nice leisurely slide into the toilet - it happened exactly ten years ago, and it's already begun happening in LA.  Mark my words.

I think these dealers are either going to just sell to each other (that's where most of the action is at these shows, and it's hilarious to watch), or they're going to be sitting on books for many years to come because no one in their right mind is going to pay these prices.  And I'm not even talking about primo condition books - they're charging three hundred bucks for books with tattered dust jackets or facsimile dust jackets, and worse, these dealers are now trying to do something that would have put them out of business a mere ten years ago - selling second and third editions for high money when said editions are worthless to any knowledgeable collector.  The latter is the result of eBay idiocy and these dealers have delightedly decided to capitalize on people's rank stupidity.

Were there books I wanted?  Sure.  I saw a The Ghost And Mrs. Muir first edition (in all my years of collecting I'd never seen the book in or out of jacket) - in jacket, close to $500.  The jacket had so many tears and rips and big chips out that it was a joke.  The same dealer had a first edition of the book that was made into the movie Red River.  Never seen that one either - $400 - jacket was nice except that it was trimmed top and bottom by 1/4" - that's a big no-no.  For $100 I would have purchased both perhaps.  But greed wins the day, only greed isn't winning - those books will not sell at those prices.  The dealer did say he'd "work with me."  I don't think he'd be willing to work as hard as I'd want him to, however.

All of that said, I did get the one bargain of the show - a dealer friend had a lovely first edition of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, a surprisingly hard book to find in first edition and in collector shape.  Usually the spine has faded completely and it's a jacket that was prone to chipping and scuffing.  This copy, other than some minimal wear at the head and heel of the spine, was basically excellent with no fading at all to the spine.  I looked up copies on the Internet - the highest priced of them isn't in as good condition - and that price was $450.  The cheapest, which was available for $125, was in awful condition.  I got this for considerably less than the latter price.

We know God didn’t create ‘Adam & Steve’ — Craig Chester did

Gay cinema seems to be in the midst of yet another renaissance, but out actor Craig Chester is no neophyte to its evolution. In the early ‘90s, Chester could be seen in groundbreaking work suchas “Swoon,” “Grief,” “Frisk” and the now classic “Kiss Me, Guido.” However, just in time for GLBT film’s post-New Queer Cinema revival, Chester wrote, directed and stars in the relentlessly fun and endearing gay romantic comedy “Adam & Steve.”

If Woody Allen were gay, this is the sort of comedy the filmmaker, never sheepish about showing the social insecurity being Jewish often brings, would create. But in his work, Chester transfers the Jew-Gentile idiosyncrasies common to heterosexual celluloid relationships to that of a gay male couple.

With a stellar cast, the film, recently released to DVD, is as star studded (Chris Kattan, Sally Kirkland, Parker Posey) as it’s hilarious. Brought to us courtesy of local company TLA Releasing, the DVD features a hearty selection of special features — the most amusing a gag reel and more deleted scenes that can be viewed with or without director commentary.

Women's College Votes to Allow Men, Draws Outrage

Saturday , September 09, 2006

LYNCHBURG, Virginia — Amid boos and shouts of "traitors!" Randolph-Macon Woman's College officials announced Saturday that men would be admitted to the 115-year-old institution starting in 2007.

In the eyes of the board of trustees, going coed could help stabilize the school's finances as interest in all-women schools wanes.

But when officials floated the idea last month, it drew a sharp response. Online petitions and campus protests decried the move, angry e-mail flooded in, one alumnae group even hired a lawyer to try to discourage the board by citing legal concerns.

Saturday morning, an agitated crowd of some 400 students, alumnae and their supporters greeted the board's announcement by drowning out trustees president Jolley Christman as she tried to explain.

"Today we begin to heal. We begin to write the next chapter in our history," Christman said, barely audible over the shouting.

Christman said the 27-2 vote followed 2 1/2 years of study. The board determined coeducation was the best way to preserve the school's mission of high academic standards for undergraduate students and said a co-educational version of Randolph-Macon would emphasize global honors programs.

Interim President Ginger Worden told the students and supporters, "Do not, I implore you, turn your back on this college," but many in the crowd swiftly turned their backs on her in response.

Figures! Only looney-tune people talk to trees!

CP-Your day sounds lovely.  Keith & I plan to take a drive to Georgetown once our puppy travels well.  We will have to make sure he likes cats since our friends there have a few.  I’m not sure they are indoor cats as the cats were all strays that found a good place to call home.

I must give him a name.  Keith still wants Muzbe :P, which most people groan or gag big time when I say Muzbe :-[.  Keith has possibly consented to Mycroft, which so far has not fared much better than Muzbe.  ;D I hate to say this but I think Muzbe is sticking. :-\

With Craig & his girlfriend’s birthdays coming up I sent off a package to Romania today.  It only cost $80 to mail a box of candy, dog & cat toys, candy, seaweed chips, candy, and a few other small items.  I’m a horrible mother sending all that candy he doesn’t need.  He wanted Red Vines, Swedish fish, sour patch kids, good n plenty & lifesavers.  I added some peanut butter M&M’s and Keith added Moose caramel corn with chocolate from Harry & David.

We found the cutest birthday card with a dog that looks very much like their Yogi.  Then of course we had to get them a card from the cat.

I finished the interviews on the WILL & GRACE final episode DVD. Since Lionsgate has been so slow releasing the seasons of the show (three more seasons to go so I guess that means it'll take three years to finish collecting the series), I'll make do with what I've got. May start watching from season 1 during the coming week, depending on what other DVDs come in.

It's a big week for new releases.

Then I put in HOW THE WEST WAS WON which took up the majority of the evening. What a marvelously involving movie, one of my all-time favorites!

But it's a movie in DIRE need of an upgrade. Yes, the DVD is a giant leap forward from the less colorful, soft laserdisc, but we're still stuck with a non-anamorphic letterboxed transfer with lots of specks, dirt, and occasional print damage. And the soundtrack is merely Dolby Surround. OK, but the Oscar-winning sound design deserves a better disc representation.

Sad to say, I haven't read anything about Warners doing any kind of upgrade for this movie.

Oops! Sorry! Pardon my French!

Voilà!

From http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com

A Socialite's Life Image ViewerYes it’s true — I’m told Jake Gyllenhaal and Lance Armstrong are hanging at the Tour De France together because the actor is the leading contender to play the cyclist in a Sony bio pic being quietly developed. On Sunday, the two sat in a Paris hotel together with friends as American Floyd Landis stood on the podium after winning the 2006 Tour de France. Needless to say, the European press went into a speculation frenzy when the Lance and Jake first showed up together . As Saturday’s all-important Individual Time Trial began, Jake joined the seven-time TdF winner in the Discovery team car for a ride-along as Lance protégé Yaroslav Popovych pedalled away. (Lance’s Discovery team faltered without him this TdF, but Landis of Phonak took the yellow jersey and eventually won the overall race). Earlier in the day, Lance met with the Tour de France organizers to lessen the tension. Armstrong, his agent Bill Stapleton, Discovery sports manager Johan Bruyneel, and Tour de France Directors Jean Marie Blanc and Christian Prudhomme had what insiders called “a heart-to-heart discussion” aboard the Discovery bus. “The meeting went well,” Bill Stapleton said later. “Everyone left with a feeling of mutual respect.” Obviously the Tour’s assistance, while not required, would be helpful to the bio-pic. Gyllenhaal and Armstrong have become pals during Jake’s method process to get to know the sports legend. The actor of Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead fame is even a long-time cyclist and has begun training for the film. Armstrong is no stranger to Hollywood: Robin Williams used to join Lance in the Alps while Armstrong was defending his Tour titles. And Armstrong hangs with Matthew McConaughey whenever the cyclist is in Los Angeles. Also, while they were together, Lance and Sheryl Crow were fixtures on the Hollywood charity and awards circuit.

As a huge TdF fan myself, I think a Lance bio-pic is a natural: why did it take Hollywood so long to put one together? So why did it take Hollywood so long to put one together? (UPDATE: Well, Bill Gerber tried to sell it years ago after reading Armstrong’s book It’s Not About The Bike. But Warner Bros. and HBO. Then producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy got lucky that Columbia Pictures president of production Matt Tolmach is a cycling fanatic. I hear he can actually do some of those Tour De France-type climbs — though not as fast.) Given Armstrong’s unhappy youth, his sports prowess (first as a triathlete and then as a cyclist), his cancer battle, his Live Strong yellow wristband campaign and his cancer foundation work, his epic seven TdF titles, his rivalry with cocky Jan Ullrich and upstart Ivan Basso, his love-hate relationship with the French, and his battle against doping accusations, it’s a heckuva tale. And the studio as well as Lance are fortunate that an Oscar nominee like Gyllenhaal wants to do it. There’s even a slight resemblance between the two men, as seen in these close-ups.

Derbrucer, you are sooo wrong about Cincinnati chili.  It is a wonder unto itself.  Now that doesn't mean I don't appreciate other kinds of chili, but when I was in California, it was Cincy chili I got a craving for and it would be the first place I'd go when returning to the old home town.  Fortunately, they had one in the airport.  And it must always come with either the spaghetti or on a hot dog with tons of shredded cheese and onions.  It's not really a chili you eat unadorned.  I go for a Texas chili for that.

But I have to disagree with Ginny.  Cincy chili (nor any chili, for that matter) should never have beans in it.  In fact, when I was growing up there...I don't even remember beans being an option on the menu.  When I do the chains, Ginny, I actually prefer Gold Star to Skyline...though some outlets vary.  We had both here in Georgetown, but the Skyline went kaput not long ago...their quality was inconsistent.  But I actually prefer Dixie Chili in Newport, Kentucky, when I go for Cincy chili...and that's where I went today.  They are especially good at getting just right the amount of chili and spaghetti, so that it all blends properly with the cheese and onions and doesn't end up too soupy which can sometimes happen.  It's an art!  An art!

Another great chili delicacy used to be served in Dallas at a small waystation on Lemon Avenue called Shanghai Jimmie's Chili Rice.  Shanghai Jimmie was an actual person, probably about eighty when I knew him, and a fluid and lovely ice skater.  Just a good skater, it wasn't his profession.  He was a world traveller and his chequered career and bio was on the menu of his establishment.  I think he came up with chili rice when he was in a Japanese prison camp during WWII. A wiry, thin little wizened old guy, but a bit of bantam who wore a big cowboy hat.  His slogan was "Chili Rice Iz Very Nice."  And it was, Chili over rice topped and mixed with shredded cheese and cubed celery.  Sounds strange but was delish.

Shanghai Jimmie and his place are long gone, but when I was in Dallas about a year ago to speak, when of my hosts at the Screenwriters Association also remembered Shanghai and managed to re-create the recipe (I think he found it on the internet...though I've seen that one and I don't think it's quite right).  It waz very nice!  I have also re-created it...I'm known to throw a little pickle relish into the concoction as well. Good eating.

At one time, pal Larry Drake and I thought we should franchise Shanghai Jimmie, just like the Colonel and his fried chicken, but like most good ideas ennui and laziness got the best of us; we preferred just eating it to making millions from it.

Cincy chili (nor any chili, for that matter) should never have beans in it.  In fact, when I was growing up there...I don't even remember beans being an option on the menu.
Chili History (http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/Chili/ChiliHistory.htm)

Quote
DEFINITION - Chili is a stew-like soup made entirely with meat, chiles, or chili powder (or both) and according to what region of the United States that you live in, it can also include beans.

1922 - Cincinnati style chili is quite different from its more familiar Texas cousin. It is unique to the Cincinnati area and it was created in 1922 by a Macedonian immigrant, Tom (Athanas) Kiradjieff. He settled in Cincinnati with his brother, John, and opened a hot dog stand with Greek food called the Empress, only to do a lousy business because nobody there at the time knew anything about Greek food. So, it is said, that they called their spaghetti chili. He created a chili made with Middle Eastern spices which could be served a variety of ways. His "five-way" was a concoction of a mound of spaghetti topped with chili, then with chopped onion, then red kidney beans, then shredded yellow cheese, and served with oyster crackers and a side order of hot dogs topped with shredded cheese.

 Beans or no beans?  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chili_con_carne#Cincinnati-style_chili)

Quote

Pinto beans (frijoles), a staple of Tex-Mex cooking, have long been associated with chili and the question of whether beans "belong" in chili has been a matter of contention amongst chili cooks for an equally long time. It is likely that in many poorer areas of San Antonio and other places associated with the origins of chili, beans were used rather than meat or in addition to meat due to poverty. In that regard, it has been suggested by some chili aficionados that there were probably two chili types made in the world, depending on what could be afforded and how frugal the cook was.

As chili spread east into areas where beef was more expensive (beef was plentiful and cheap in San Antonio and other cattle towns), chili with Pinto or other beans became more prevalent. In some eastern areas, this dish is referred to as "chili beans" while the term chili is reserved for the all-meat dish. Other changes included the adding of other vegetables. Tomatoes are almost always used, bell peppers are common and even celery appears in recipes. Many easterners are just as adamant about the inclusion of beans in their chili for an authentic flavor as Texans are about their exclusion.

Most commercially prepared canned chili includes beans. Commercial chili prepared without beans is usually called "Chili No Beans".

Many chili experts believe, however, that beans and chili should always be cooked separately and served on the side. It is then up to the consumer to stir his preferred quantity of beans into his own bowl. Some cooks prefer black beans, black-eyed peas, or kidney beans instead of pinto beans.

A popular saying among chili purists is "If you know beans about chili, you know chili ain't got no beans".

I got back from my sister's house about a half hour ago.  It turns out that my mom didn't see the 5.7% interest rate at a local bank (I misunderstood her message), she searched the Internet and said that I should talk with someone at a local bank (I don't know why ::)).

Anyway, I showed my mom the two loan offers and she said that the one that I was thinking of getting (the lower of the two Internet offers), really was a pretty good deal.  So, I'm going to go with that.  I do have a couple more questions for the lender (Todd), but they're just for information, not to make a final decision.

Now all I really need to find out about is if the sellers are willing to fix what needs to be fixed, mainly the bathrooms.  There is moisture under both toilets and the sellers should fix it.  If they don't (or don't offer some sort of allowance), then it's probably a deal breaker.  We'll see.
