Title: SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL
Post by: bk on September 18, 2006, 12:15:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have caused you to shake, rattle, and roll, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're playing a little gin rummy and will be home soon.

Topic of the Day:  I have no freakin' idea. ::)

;) Growing up, my dad had some compilation albums that had hits of the fifties and sixties, so I can't say when I first heard them or what they were.

As for favorites, I'll have to think about that.  There are a lot of early rock-and-roll songs that I like, but I can't remember specific ones that stand out. :-\

Yes, DR MATTH - I have seen Miss Carroll Baker's movie debut in EASY TO LOVE....she talks about it less than fondly in her autobiography...including some rather rude comments made to her by Ms Esther Williams.

Carroll also mentions that her sister who was appearing in a Water Show at Cypress Gardens, was one of the extras in a couple of the BIG numbers.

Raining here raining raining raining.....

TAR is back and back on track!  What a terrific opening show.  I have a few favorites among the teams....but we shall see what next week brings.  Really enjoyed seeing the Chinese scenery.

I ordered the FAMILY dvd that has the six first season shows and the 22 second season shows.

"See Ya Later, Alligator" is the first r/r song I remember.  And a couple of early Elvis songs "Hound Dog" and "Don't Be Cruel" are also memories.

I was 5 years old when James Dean died in his car crash, and I remember a song that played A LOT on the radio about him....or at least someone named Jimmy who had died....but I think the song was about a motorcycle wreck...  Fuzzy memories....  I remember being shocked to see Jimmy Dean singing on television the next week.  Didn't get that straight for a long time.

TOM JONES was released in 1963....I watched it tonight.  For some reason I have avoided it ALL these years.  And for some reason, I thought it was in b/w.....but NO there it was in glorious color.  Albert Finney was almost impossibly handsome.

A very good morning to all!  I am so far behind on everything that it isn't even funny.  And now I find that somehow I'm off by two days for our dear Elmores birthday!

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday to our Dear Larry!

BK:

According to the Calendar, Larry's birthday is tomorrow, not today.  I checked just because I wanted to see his age--how naughty of me!  Of course the Calendar also says that Dear Reader DearReaderLaura will be 106 on Thursday, so I'm not sure it can be trusted.

Anyway, just in case,

and many happy returns!  (Oh, a The Prisoner reference!)

We had the "new" fridge and "new" washer delivered on Saturday and what a trip that was.  They had to take the front door off it's hinges to get the fridge in and the guy still managed to get one of his fingers caught in the frame.  Then he caught his elbow on the screen door.

Add to that the dogs were barking like crazy (outside) and I had one heck of headache by the time it was all over.  And now it seems it was all for nothing because the fridge isn't getting cold (not below 50 degrees) and the washer is leaking all over the floor.  Sigh.  I have to call the place this morning and have them come out and take the stuff away but it will have to wait until the weekend again.  So I'm no better off then I was last week--worse because I have to keep a towel by the washer and by the time the weekend rolls around who know how much damage my floor will have.  Sigh.

And the word of the day is: FELDSPAR!
The RED FLAPS on the wings of Orville's model airplane were made of FELDSPAR, the wings themselves were made of marble, and the fusilage was made of granite.  The model wasn't designed to actually fly, of course, but that didn't keep Orville's kid brother Wilbur from trying.

TOD:

I don't know what the first rock and roll tune I ever heard was.

I do know what the first novelty song I remember hearing was.  It was The Itsy-Bitsy Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka-Dog Bikini, and I remember hearing it on Main Street at Disneyland, of all places, outside the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor.

Comments re: last night's TAR.

.
.
.

I also really loved last night's show.  I have a few favorites and some that i'm not liking.

I cannot wait to see who everyone else's favorites are.

The 2 eliminations were a surprise.  I'm sure the producers could not have been thrilled that the eliminated teams were the indian couple and the muslims. But i didn't mind that much. It would have been interesting to how the muslims adapted their prayers to the race. But i honestly don't think either of these teams had winning potential. They were not competitive. And to me it almost seemed like the show just wanted to have diversity without making sure the teams could do well.

I like the model/drug addicts. I think they have a lot of potential.

I really liked the team with the girl with the disability. I didn't mind that she pre-boarded the plane. BUt i was a bit offput by her telling the cab she had an emergency.  BUt i like them a lot. And thought it was slightly crazy that they made her climb that rope.

I am wondering what others thought of that rope. It was interesting to make people do one physical thing to finish the task. A lot of people struggled. But would they ever have a task the girl with the leg could not do?

Here are the teams who turned me off:

The black women.

The father/daughter.

The guy who yells at his girlfriend.

Here are the teams who i like:

The korean guys (or whatever they were). But they need to pick it up big  time.

I also thought the miss americas (or whatever pageant they were from) were quite fit. They could do well.

As for the other teams the cheerleaders did well. I think the gay couple will have trouble.

And OMG that team from kentucky (alabama?), the hicksters. So funny watching them. Why do i think this will be DR MBarnum's new favorite? :)

Good morning, all!  The birthday problem is my fault!  I mentioned the wonderful dinner with DR FJL and Skip, and tomorrow, Sept 19, I turn the BIG 6-0!  Just as I always think my ever-young friend BK is a year behind me in age (and isn't!), I'm sure that my dear friend's preoccupation with his hectic schedule and amount of work to prepare for the events coming up, not to mention hosting the continuous birthday and unbirthday party on this site, mistook the calendar date.  I couldn't be happier since I get two days for the price of one.

At any rate, there can never be too many birthday wishes.  And I thank you for them all!  My day today should be pleasant:  some IRS work for my accountant, then a 1:00 matinee of The Singing Nun, followed by a pleasant late and afternoon exploring uncharted waters familiarly known as "The Brain from Planet X."  Now that we've lost Pluto, we need a new planet and X is fine with me.

TOD:  Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" is my first real memory, but I have no feeling for the chronology of such songs as "Chantilly Lace," and the Buddy Holly songs I loved.

B'day Best to the incomparable elmore!  I dance the Wah-watusi and partake of a ham chunk in his honour.

TOD: Probably something by Presley.  I love Presley songs and Doo-wop.  Still do! I remember the first time I heard Lonely Teardrops by Jackie Wilson.  It was riveting.  Loved Orbison and Gene Pitney and Gene Mc Daniel too -- A Hundred Pounds of Clay.

Tonight begins the new TV season. I'm looking forward to seeing THE CLASS (with the adorable Jesse Tyler Ferguson among other fresh faces) and STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP.

Of course, I'll be rejoining standbys from last season HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, too.

I'll have to record most of these since I'll be auditioning this evening.

I used to be so organized; that Virgo mentality is starting to slip.  I just found the CD of "Brain" songs that our host with the most, BK, sent me ages ago, and now it's loaded into my iTunes.  I've got to read Act Two tonight, finish notes and make by BIG CHART.  Used to seem so simple.

DR Jose, welcome back!  I think you should post the review you sent me this morning.

When Barbra Streisand was directing one of her pathetic I'm-Not-Ugly-I'm-Beautiful films - not LENTIL but THE MIRROR SOMETHING - sher filmed at night on West End Avenue around 84th Street, all night, every night, forever, and the tenants in the neighborhood wanted a building to fall on her and the lights.

Well, here's the opening paragraph:

Quote

Arena's 'Cabaret,' Heavy on the Makeup
By Peter Marks
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 18, 2006; Page C01

Tomorrow, it turns out, belongs to the drag queens. Pushing brooms in director Molly Smith's idea of the notorious Kit Kat Klub, that Broadway-style bastion of Weimar Germany's decadence, men in rouge and fishnet stockings are chosen to belt out "Cabaret's" Aryan anthem, "Tomorrow Belongs to Me."

And if any DR would like to read the rest, here's the link to the article:

Comments re: last night's TAR.
.
.
.
.

I like the model/drug addicts. I think they have a lot of potential.

I really liked the team with the girl with the disability.

LOL, DR Jennifer, I am not surprised, but we like completely different teams.  I was cheering most for the father/daughter and the black women.  I was sorry to see the Indian couple go.

The models will be ok if they quit the program stuff... ok you were addicts and you got clean, you don't need to tell me that 100 times, I get it already- move on.

The team that annoyed me the most was the woman with the disability and her whatever he is.  I started out cheering for her and was impressed with the things she can do, but she turned out to really annoy me, I didn't like it when they preboarded and said " We can play the disability card a lot in this race" or whatever the exact words were.  She's some sort of Iron Man athlete, but will lie (it's an emergency) and use her disability to gain an advantage.  I don't like that.

I don't think they should modify the challenges or change them for just her. Others have problems doing them too due to weight or lack of training or age or whatever, if you're going to do TAR, you have to do TAR, if you can't, you'll be eliminated. That's the way it should be.

I think it's totally appropriate to have a physical challenge like the rope early in the competition.  How bad to you want this? Bad enough to focus and challenge yourself beyond where you thought you could go?  Everyone made it up the rope, so it wasn't impossible for anyone and I think it was great for the teams.  Even the coal miner finally showed some respect for his wife saying she was going to have kids at home who would be so proud of her and that he never imagined she could do that. Maybe he'll even listen to her a little now.

DRs DerBrucer and SWoodyWhite - It was good seeing you guys again this weekend.  How was the rest of your theatrical adventure?  And thanks again for dinner!  :)

*Ah, yes...  So you say you got sort of lost around Andrew AFB?  -Are you sure you weren't around Bolling AFB?  -Which is where you should have ended up heading around on your way out of the city.  However, if you did end up around Andrews, I guess that means you took a right instead of a left.  ;)  Glad to know you made it home safe and sound.

Yeah if i wrote wife, i meant girlfriend.

It's typical TAR. Always having a team with a guy who yells!

Seriously, i don't like him. But maybe he'll mellow a bit. And perhaps if they improve and are competitive i may change my mind.

Elmore!!! Thanks for the hello's... unfortunately, the time I spent in the BMI workshop TWO YEARS AGO(!!!) was not a good time for my best work -- my mother had gotten her terminal diagnosis, and I was commuting back and forth NY-LA every ten days... it was just the wrong time to be in that august company, and I'm afraid I didn't make the impression on those other writers that i had hoped to make... Ah, well... I don't regret the time i spent here in LA, with the family, having that once-in-a-lifetime experience of participating in Farewells.

Well there are some teams that i'm sure i'll change my mind about.

Usually i go for the teams that are the most capable.  I'm not that keen on them wasting spots on people who have no chance (or capability) to win.

Question:  I thought his "people" were trying to make him look less[/b] gay?

;D

Well, he had that atrocious hairstyle when he was a guest star on the season finale of AMERICAN IDOL back in May, so someone in his retinue must think it's a good idea. Maybe that's THE style now. I'm so far out of the loop, I wouldn't know.

Loved last nights episode!

My favorite teams are/were the father/daughter, the Indian team (Vipul and Arti), the brothers (Edwin and Godwin), the models, and the Miss Americas.

The Kentucky team I find entertaining...so far...but if that gal would stop yelling at her husband all the time I would like them a bit more.

The bickering couple...uhg!

the other teams have not made an impression on me yet, although I was put off by the introduction to the gay team...I didn't like their attitude.

Well, I was a witness to the Birth of Rock and Roll!
I watched Bandstand before Dick Clark took over in a midnight switch from a chap named Bob Horn who was caught in the broom closet with a minor. (Clark had been hawking dinner plates and silverware on a late-nite movie show).

The Grand Beginning: Bill Haley and His Comets, "Rock Around the Clock". 1954
(actually Joe Turner had recorded " Shake, Rattle and Roll", in1954 but it didn't go big until Haley did a cover later on).

Fats domino Ain't that a shame 1955
The Platters, "Only You". Released mid-1955.
Chuck Berry, "Maybellene". Recorded May 1955.
Carl Perkins, "Blue Suede Shoes". Recorded December 1955.
Elvis Presley, "Heartbreak Hotel 1956
Fats Domino, "Blueberry Hill". Released September 1956.

I had a Greta Garbo festival this afternoon. TCM is funning some of her classics today, and there were two I had never seen before which I got the DVR to catch.

I began with SUSAN LENOX: HER FALL AND RISE. Not a very good picture really, and similar in some ways to Dietrich's BLONDE VENUS (made the same year) featuring a woman who uses men to get what she wants materially, but what she really wants is love and marriage with her first love. Garbo and Gable don't make a great couple though he's as commanding as always.

The print on TCM was grainy and not in very good shape.

Next came THE PAINTED VEIL. This is a love triangle picture with Herbert Marshall as the husband and George Brent as the lover. Unusual that it's set in China where Marshall is a doctor battling a cholera epidemic. I only got an hour in, but I was enjoying it more than SUSAN LENOX. Still, very similar to ANNA KARENINA which Garbo was to make the next year.

The print on TCM had some small scratches and dirt, but the black and white cinematography was gorgeous. I suspect I'll finish this tonight after I watch STUDIO 60.

Now dealing with some things I would have preferred not dealing with - Miss Lauren Rubin called to say her boss would not agree to her schedule for the play, hence she is pulling out.  I'm always amused when actors moan about their going-nowhere careers and then don't do what needs to be done when they are handed a golden opportunity on a platter - a LOT of people are going to see this show, including agents, managers, and casting people.  But, you're either an actor and willing to do what's necessary, or you're not.  Nothing against Lauren, who's a very nice and talented gal - but she just made a bad, bad decision.   So, I'm now scrambling trying to think of a replacement, hopefully one with some sort of name value and/or good credits.

I hate it when clients pick and choose what part of their tax info they're going to send us.  In this case the client likes sending copies rather than originals and decided to pick and choose to save on the copying, so it probably ends up costing more in accounting fees for us to call him and ask for the extra stuff.

TOTD:

Anything sung by Buddy Holly and Bobby Darin
Virtually anything produced by Tommy "Snuff" Garrett - ie Tracks by Johnny Burnette, Gene McDaniels, and Bobby Vee. Snuff's later production for The Crickets, Cher, Gary Lewis and Vickie Lawrence were also great.

I heard today that my buddy and interviewee Mickey Hargitay passed away. I knew he had been ill but I hoped he would pull through.

He was a super nice, down to earth guy and he even gave me a grand tour of his home up in the hills above Sunset Blvd....it was wonderful!!

*And then at the end of that week, I'm going on a cruise!  Well, I'm actually working on the cruise.  However, it's a seven-day cruise, and I'm only scheduled to work five hours during that time.  So...  :D

Are you sailing from New York?  Can we wave and blow kisses and shout, "Bon Voyage"?

I'm trying very hard to stay awake until 10pm to watch the first episode of Studio 60.  At least I can sleep in a little in the morning, because I'm taking half a day off to have a brunch visit with a friend.  She and her husband are leaving this weekend on their first segment of America's Great Loop (http://www.greatloop.com).  They keep their boat just downriver from Cincinnati and plan to get to Venice, FL, before storing it for the winter.

Jimmy was the one with the sausage.

Oh... And Kevin James and Dan Ackroyd too...  Must be a comic fire-fighter movie.  I hope.

;)

Gee, that's depressing!  The only one of the three I would want to meet is Adam Sandler.

PennyO has come and gone.  We fixed a few things before the reading on Wednesday - simple fixes, really, but they help a lot, clarity-wise.  We also had a lovelier than lovely dinner at Hugo's, where I stuffed my gaping hungry maw with Pasta Papa (pasta, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon) and a salad.

Alet came over and we were happy to discover that her song keys are fine as is.

Well, I just got a call from my real estate agent and she said that the sellers of the condo I'm buying have people in there now who are fixing the things that I asked to have fixed!  The main thing was the moisture under both toilets.  However, the fixers can't find any kind of leak so they think that the toilets might have some very small cracks...they are both 20 years old, you know, so they're overdue to be replaced.  So, I have to replace them, which is what I'm going to do now. :P But I'll have new toilets!  I have no idea how much toilets cost, but I'll find out very soon.

Later!

And TCB, I think Kevin James is pretty cute. ;)

Break a leg tonight!  It's for AMADEUS, if my muddled mind recalls correctly?

My roommate in college was in the original Broadway cast of AMADEUS back in 1980.

He had made his Broadway debut the year before in CRUCIFER OF BLOOD.  As a matter of fact, from what I have read, he has made quite a career of doing CRUCIFER in various theaters.

Auditions went just fine. Not a huge turnout but decent. I read for four roles and was moderately satisfied with what I did. Auditions are also tomorrow but I won't be going. Notifications on Wednesday-rehearsals start next Monday.

I did get home in time to watch some prime time TV. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was in progress when I walked in the door but using the DVR and its ability to watch in real-time and skip commercials, I finally caught up with the show in progress.

Better than almost all of last season's episodes of this show, I thought. Bright funny lines all around.

VANISHED held my attention for another hour with the kidnapping story continuing to curl into many other areas and implicate other people. I'm liking the show, but I'll be eager to see how much its ratings suffer by airing opposite new shows on the other networks tonight.

And then STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP. I liked it (but didn't love it). The writing was smart, funny, but at times lacerating, too, which kept it edgier than some other shows. Creator/writer/producer Aaron Sorkin certainly used his one-time relationship with Kristin Chenoweth to mine character and plot for at least one storyline.

I've never been a fan of Amanda Peet's acting, and this performance tonight didn't change my mind. I thought most of the cast were a tier higher than she in the talent department.

I had a very productive work session with BK this afternoon, on the play. We moved scenes around and deleted extraneous dialogue to give the piece more zip and verve. Then alet came by with her 4-year-old daughter Lucy of the Dirty Cowboy Boots. She scrambled over the yellow velvet couch with said boots, until I removed them, while Mommy tried to concetrate on the song from BRAIN. It's gonna be great! The song, not the couch... no, seriously, Alet and Lucy went out to the car to get HandiWipes and fixed the couch.

Then Bruce and I had a bit of dinner - he ordered a really wonderful-smelling pasta and scrambled eggs dish. Yes, scrambled eggs. And a salad. I had a salad and water with lemon. That boy's clothes just hang off his lanky frame, I tell ya. Somebody needs to take him shopping for some smaller clothes - he looks positively ENGULFED in denim and cotton jersey. Still, must be very comfortable...
