Title: 1962
Post by: bk on September 20, 2006, 12:14:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're pining for the good old movie days of 1962, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been saying they're coming home since 1962.

Darn! I was replying to yesterdays question from Bruce and lost it because I didn't notice the day was closed. Here it is again:

Quote from bk:
You'll be there.  Support your fellow scribes for what, pray tell?

To which I replied...
Glad that you know what I'm going to do before I do! As I said earlier, I doubt I'll go because I'm very uncomfortable in crowds of this type.

As for what the rally is all about... A quote for the WGA:
" We need to let the industry know that we are united in demanding fairness and respect, and that we will not allow them to roll back our standards."
The last part of that statement refers to the conglomerates  trying to impose the DVD formula on digital downloads.
As for the fairness and respect part, among other things,  basic benefits and Guild coverage are being denied to reality show writers. Not fair.
Twelve writers at the CW’s America’s Next Top Model have been on strike for eight weeks. This rally will show them support.

Hope this answers your questions.

So, it's a private rally - nothing to do with contract renewal time - do I have that right?

It's a WGA Rally, not private. Has to do with what I mentioned above. Not contract renewal, as far as I know.

And the word of the day is: FUGACIOUS!
The USUAL ICY FOG of California's Central Valley disappeared FUGACIOUSLY once the sun rose over the Sierra Nevadas.

(Sorry, but I couldn't come up with an anagram for the adjective, had to move it into the adverbial form.  And I was so hoping to have a sentence about Gypsy Rose Lee's fugacious costume.   :-\)

I've been having sooo much fun at work.

Hmmm, that sounded negative.  I don't mean it to sound that way.

Let me try explaining.

During the summer, we have an expanded staff, mainly because of the extra business we get from the summer vacationers, which is plenty.  We add staff throughout the market, particularly in the checkers (lots of girls from Russia), but also in our staff outside, who wrangle the carts from the parking lot and also double as baggers.

Well, it's no longer summer.  The girls are gone, as are our wranglers, almost to a man local high school students who are now back in school.

The exception has been Lamar, who has discontinued school, shall we say.  He replaces Kim, who was our wrangler (and Special Olympics shot-put star) but is now attending college (and we're all proud of him).

Last week, Lamar's grandmother died suddenly.

Lamar hasn't been back, which has left some of us filling in on the wrangling, mostly Chad (who usually does the numerous odd jobs that come up throughout the store) and myself.

It's a nice change of pace from checking, more physical and using a different set of muscles, lots of leg-work and pushing/pulling - checking is more like repeated lifting and step aerobics.

Yesterday, I was asked if I could come in today, which had been scheduled as a day off.  I'll be off Friday, instead.  And I'm putting in an extra couple of hours.

The only real downside is that we're in the middle of September, and it's only now that I'm getting sunburned!

****

And will someone please explain to me how it is that a fellow like myself, at fifty-three, has more energy than the kids who are a third my age???  No, really, the lads who usually do the wrangling constantly complain about how tired they are.

Der B and I don't have that many films from 1962 in our DVD collection.

One that we do have in the collection might interest DR Michael Barnum: The Brain that Wouldn't Die.

I have no idea how it got in our collection, but it's there.

In contrast, the list of films from 1963 in our collection include:

The Birds
Charade
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
The Flight of the Phoenix
The French Chef (television series, selected episodes)
From Russia With Love
The Great Escape
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Mary Poppins
My Fair Lady
and Twice Told Tales (another film that might interest DR Michael Barnum)

(Isn't it convenient, to have these all in a database!)

My ask BK questions
I was watching an episode of Donny Marie's variety show you did. (The ones where you did the Mickey and Judy Babes in Arms set piece and the Li'l Abner type of sketch,)

How much of it was filmed in front of studio audience?
Does the studio where they filmed still exists and where was it I didn't recognize the name?
Did you sing live or was it memorex? (An Ella Fitzgerald reference)

Also I think that the show was trying to be Sonny and Cher for the Morman set.

Oh one last thing - I was impressed with the improvement on Dancing With the Stars last night.  Tonight I want to watch it, but the 2 part American Masters on Andy Warhol starts, so, I may have to figure out how to set up my DVR to record something while I'm watching something else. It' isn't set up that way right now

Good morning, all!  I have few plans today and all are centered in and around the apartment:  I have to clean this dump for two reasons:
  1.  Time Warner Cable is delivering a new modem for the computer, and I hope this clears up the email problem.
  2.  The Library of Congress is picking up 11 cartons of music, including my full scores to the Goodspeed productions of MIRETTE and REDHEAD, DARLING OF THE DAY, and a lot more recording and concert work.

Beyond that, I have a lot of IRS materials to ship this morning, and a few bills to pay now that some money has floated into my account.

TOD:  I can only think of 9!
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Music Man
The Manchurian Candidate
Gypsy
Lolita
Dr No
How the West Was Won
Boys' Night Out

I'm sure there are other films I saw that year, since I spent every weekend in the Paramount Theatre, so they must have been grade D MBarnum films!

Speaking of our wonderful DR MBarnum, I treat him like crap on this site, and I never praise him enough: his good humor, his kindness, his good character, and his trust.  Now enough of this twaddle!

Wednesday morning greetings!  It is a beautifully crisp fall day here in SW Ohio.

TOD - The Music Man is one of my all-time favorite musicals, because it was the first professional show I saw - touring company at Detroit's Riviera Theatre, with Forrest Tucker as Harold Hill - when I was 8 or 9 years old.  I agree the movie is excellently true to the show.  Of course, the fact that the female lead is a Librarian resonates for me, too  ;).

Good morning!

It's an absolutely beautiful morning here. Not a cloud in the sky, and temperatures right now in the low to mid 60s.

I'm going out in awhile, and I had to really decide between shorts and jeans for today. I chose the shorts today, but I'm sure it'll be jeans tomorrow. It's supposed to get down into the 40s tonight.

If I was in LA, I would be at the WGA rally.  You support your fellows scribes in their time of need, because you want them there in your time of need!  Any any attack against the Writers Guild and its goals is an attack against ALL writers.  Their time of need IS your time of need!  They knock one of us over, we become dominos.

In these days of Union-busting, it is imperative that the Guilds stick together and the individual memberships of the individual guilds stick together.  You allow the bad guys to win this one and the next time, they're coming to rollback your residuals or your healthcare or your pension.

It disgusts me that writers are always whining and expecting the Guild to be the Great and Good Santa Claus dispensing largess to their every demand, but when the union calls upon its membership to do something, those same whining members with all the demands and expectations just can't summon up the energy because its not really "their" issue, or it only "effects" this group, or some other trivial and inconsequential excuse.

The truth is they just can't be bothered to interrupt their own petty, self-involved lives to see the long-term or the greater good.  They somehow think the Guild is seperate and apart from them and they don't need to show up.  But the simple fact is the Guild is its membership and only as strong as its membership.  It will die if its membership doesn't participate or languishes with indifference and ennui.

I've been able to comfortably semi-retire at a fairly young age largely because of the benefits and diligence of my guild, benefits that others before me fought and bled and sacrifice for!  Because they bothered to show up and make a difference!

END OF RANT!

Of the 1962 musicals (MUSIC MAN, GYPSY, JUMBO, STATE FAIR, BROTHERS GRIMM which has some songs and dances), I would pick GYPSY off the shelf, but that in no way denegrates THE MUSIC MAN which certainly comes in a strong second in my mind. Both have great DVD transfers, but the last time I saw GYPSY, I was astonished at how great that transfer was. Rich color, sharpness that approached HD, and terrific sound.

I remember pulling THE MUSIC MAN off immediately after finishing GYPSY thinking that transfer might also make my eyes pop, but while it was excellent, it didn't quite have the same "WOW" factor for me.

Does make me want to watch it again, however.

THE MUSIC MAN
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE

To Kill A Mockingbird
Mutiny on the Bounty
Gypsy
The Music Man
Lawrence of Arabia
Jumbo
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
That Touch of Mink
The Days of Wine and Roses
The Miracle Worker

(I'd add "How the West Was Won" but it will forever be a 1963 film in my mind.  It was only eligible for 1963 Academy Awards and went up against 1963 films for the ones it won).

I agree with CP's rant - one definitely SHOULD support the union. I'm a proud member of not one, but two Writers Guilds - America and Canada. And, yes, I'm still considering going to the rally, but probably won't. I said earlier that I'm "uncomfortable" in crowds of this type. That understates the case. I've on occasion had panic attacks in situations like this. This goes back to my childhood days when the protesting crowds in Budapest were shot at. The memory of this is in my gut as if it were yesterday. Of course, I know this won't happen at the Grove in LA - my mind knows that - but the part of me that starts to hyperventilate and get incredibly upset doesn't.

I don't think it's a matter of whether the models can discuss philosophy or crack wise... "Reality" shows  - which actually have very little to do with reality - are written and shaped as much as any other dramatic (or comedic) show. And it's not easy!
Mr. Kimmel can speak to that - he's worked on several.

I can see that emotions run high on the "union or not" topic being tossed about.  So I think it may be best if left alone.  I think it is wonderful if any persons have had a difficulty or an unfairness, and their respective union stood up for them with some muscle and determination.

Such was not my experience on the only 2 occassions that I ever needed and asked for help from my particular union.  And this was after being a paying supportive member for about 30 years.

Predictably, The Music Man is my #1 favorite film from '62. I almost did a spit-take with my coffee this morning laughing when I read DR MusicGuy's reference to the "cross hands piece". I can't count how many times I heard, as a child, my father quoting the line "Don't dawdle, Amaryllis" to me or my brother...often with Winthrop's lisp, as we lagged behind.

That's cool, BK, that you had contact with Monique Vermont. I will have to check out the Kritzer trilogy; I'm sure it's far superior to the "Sleepaway Camp" trilogy!  ;)

I recently spent time with another child star of '62: Mary Badham, who played Scout in "To Kill A Mockingbird". I presented our "Sacco and Vanzetti" film at the Rome International Film Festival (not as exotic as it seems---it was in Rome, Georgia!) a week or so ago. It preceeded the closing night film, which was "To Kill A Mockingbird"! Mary was in attendance because she was also in the opening night film called "Our Very Own". (I wasn't there for opening night, but this film starred Allison Janney and Keith Carradine, whom I worked with a few years ago.)

It was neat to see this film in a theatre...a nice pairing by the festival director of two films about our legal system, and Mary did a Q&A afterwards. She said that she and Philip Alford, who played her brother, had no acting experience before they were cast in this. They were just kids growing up in Birmingham, AL and never expected anything to come of their auditions. Philip is now a project supervisor for a large construction firm and travels a lot. I know Collin Wilcox, who played Mayella Ewell, because she has had a theatre company in NC for many years (the Instant Theatre Company) and was able to re-connect Mary, who had lost track of Collin.

Mary also talked about how she got a ribbing (pardon the pun) for playing a ham, when her last name was "Bad-ham". She is very involved in the preservation of historic theatres in small towns (our screening was in the 1929 Desoto, one of the first talkie theatres in the South) and so we spent about an hour venting about preservation struggles we were both going through. Nice to meet a fellow comrade-in-arms!

It's not so much a matter of writing dialogue (except for the hosts, I assume) - There are hundreds of hours of film ...which must be shaped into a story. A story with suspense, pathos, humor, compelling character development...  As I said earlier, it's not real...
Title: Re:1962

Re reality shows - I don't watch the ones that are on now, the hits, but the three long-running shows I worked on (Totally Hidden Video, Penn and Teller's Bullshit, and Cowboy U) were very much put together by their writer/producers.  The structure (remember, there's no structure without someone making structure), the voice overs (in the case of Bullshit and Hidden Video) made the shows what they were, etc - all written and structured - the way reality pieces are edited - all scripted and structured by writers who've viewed hundreds of hours worth of tapes.

When I left Totally Hidden Video just prior to their final season, because after two-and-a-half years they asked me to take a salary cut because there was no management at Fox, I said that was unacceptable, and I told them they had no appreciation or even knowledge of how important what I did on that show was.  They smirked.  As I left, I told them they'd find out and that they'd be off the air within the first twelve episodes of the new season.  They smirked.  They were off the air after six shows because they got people who worked cheap but who didn't understand the mechanics of how to make the show work and what it took to do so.

That said, the money that I made on that show was incredible.  No complaints at all and that was back in the early 90s.  The money I made on Bullshit was excellent - no complaints.  The Cowboy U money - excellent, no complaints.  The only time I felt I was underpaid was when I show ran Tricks Of The Trade - that money was a little under what I was used to, but it wasn't bad.

Now, maybe it's worse on network TV (all by stuff has been for Fox or cable), but I don't see how that's the case.  However, not all writers on these shows choose to be called writers - some simply take the producer credit, as I foolishly did on Bullshit.  Had I not, one of the other producers and I would have shared in its Writer's Guild award, since we did at least half the writing on the show.

Even when you're seeing interviews on reality TV shows, the questions are prepared in advance and those doing the interviewing know exactly what will be needed and they either lead in that direction or they're actually told what to say, basically.

Add to that the current publicity whores. Ummm, Lindsey Lohan??? Nicole Richie?? (What does that girl DO, besides be a great man's daughter???)

I think Telly Savalas is terrific too! A long time ago, I saw him on the "telly" relate this true story ...

Telly Savalas ran out of gas late one night. A man stopped to help him, driving him to a gas station and loaning him money to pay for the gas. He asked the man to write down his name, address and phone so he could repay him the money. The next day, Telly called the number and a woman answered. She said that her husband had passed away five years before. Not wanting the woman to think that he was playing a joke, Telly visited the woman and showed her the paper where the man had written the information. She recognized the writing as that of her husband and asked him to describe the man. From the description of the clothes he was wearing, she identified the good samaritan as her husband--right down to the suit he had been buried in!

Interesting side note: Telly Savalas was Jennifer Aniston's Godfather.

Speaking of our wonderful DR MBarnum, I treat him like crap on this site, and I never praise him enough: his good humor, his kindness, his good character, and his trust.

His "trust"? Do tell! What are his control words?

Hmmmm....all very interesting.

I have seen Story Editor and other "story" credits on shows such as THE REAL WORLD, and assumed those people watched the tapes and put together a beginning, middle, and end for a storyline of one or more episodes....didn't realize that would come under "writing" as well.

If they have to watch all those hours of those "Models"....they aren't paid ENOUGH, no matter what they get.

I would add Paris Hilton to the list - but she actually seems to have some intelligence and her compassion for the people whose lives she invades on the few episodes of THE REAL LIFE that I have seen, is certainly more genuine than those of her "compatriot."

Sometimes media interest is confused with public interest....and usually the media stays a bit too long at the fair....or as Joe Gillis said about Norma: "She's waving to a parade that has passed her by."  And echoed by C B DeMille:  "Thirty million fans have given her the brush."

Here are my thoughts on last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS.

.
.
.

First off I agree that everyone is really doing better and the level is quite good.

Random comments:

1. My favorite performance was joey lawrence. Although i think mario lopez is probably the best dancer.

2. I know jerry springer won't be going home. But i thought the judges were a bit too easy on him. I did feel for his partner. And I love how hard he is trying. And he was decent (and put a lot of effort into it). But he was clearly inferior to everyone else and i thought the judges gave him marks that were too high.

3. I think willa seems so sweet.

4. I really do not know who will go home, since everyone did quite well.  But i think it will be based on popularity and not on who did the worst job.

Well, I have to agree with you on that.  I mean you get 10 votes per person and since you can vote online, then delete your cookies and vote again, it's clearly a popularity contest.   I hope Jerry Springer sticks around for awhile...he's great comic relief.

I do like Jerry Springer on this okay. And i actually love his dance partner (so sweet).  But i fear he will last a very long time. And unless he improves signifcantly i just don't agree with that.

Last week I suspect he got the most votes (he had to have gotten close to the top or he would have been in the bottom 3).

For "ask BK day" ...

Dear BK,

Do you ever run into the situation with singers, where they don't actually realize what is the best part of their range?  I thought of this because you mentioned setting keys for songs in "The Brain," and I used to encounter an odd thing when I was working with soloists each week.

It seemed especially true of sopranos and tenors;  they always would try to pick a key that was just a little too high for them.  I don't know if they felt that they had to prove how high they could sing, but they invariably would get weak in the very top range, and the color wasn't as rich or warm.  I finally solved the problem, by just dropping the key a half or whole step on the actual performance day.

So, what is your system for getting across to singers where they are actually the strongest and best-sounding?

Speaking of Telly Savalas, I was just watching one of his lesser accomplishments at the end of my afternoon of viewing - BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE on the INHD high definition channel.

I've never seen this movie before - certainly didn't pay money to see it in the theater - and the first thirty minutes are supremely bad. Shots of the ship explosions are lifted from THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE with new footage of the cast being tossed about obviously (and badly) connected to it.

But what a cast: Michael Caine, Sally Field, Telly, Karl Malden, Shirley Jones, Veronica Hammell, Peter Boyle. I'm sure they all got good paydays from this. Sally's other movie that year won her an Oscar - NORMA RAE.

I was surprised that this sequel was a Warner Bros. movie, not a Fox production. I guess Irwin Allen had gone from Fox to Warners by the late 70s.

But I did ;D She was wonderful. The showing of TKAM and the dinner in her honor were both at The Orpheum. It was restored 5 years ago to the tune of $12 million.  She was very impressed with it.

And for your reading pleasure:

Chenoweth, Hensley, Kudisch to Star in October Workshop of Young Frankenstein  (http://broadway.yahoo.com/news/news.php?n=813)

and

Keeping Up with Tom Jones (http://www.playbill.com/features/article/102083.html)

der Brucer

What I find particularly interesting is that the Monster will be played by Shuler Hensley (http://www.shulerhensley.com/).

Hensley, of course, won both an Olivier and a Tony (not to mention the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desk Awards) for his portrayal of Jud Fry in Oklahoma!--the rôle that our very own DR Jason got three callbacks on when the National Company was being cast--but alas! did not get the part.

But--there is always a but--did you know that Hensley played the Monster in the musical Frankenstein (http://www.frankensteinthemusical.com/)?

And did you know that he played the Monster in the so-bad-I-can't-take-my-eyes-off-it film Van Helsing, starring his Oklahoma! co-star Mr. Jackman?  (I just know the MBarnums of two generations hence will love it!)

It appears that Shuler was born to play Frankenstein's monster.

The sitcom will be scheduled for the 2007 fall season.

Evening all.  Just a quick hello.  I hope that DR Elmore had a grand time on his birthday.

My, but this seems to be a very popular time of year to be born!  I had a special friend whose birthday is today but since we don't talk anymore there is no sense in wishing him a Happy Birthday.

It was really raining this morning!  We had to take another way to work and we were very late.  Oh well.

I received an interesting email at work today.  It seems another department has a new job opening and the guy who will be it's supervisor wanted to know why I hadn't applied for it.

It's more money but I'm not sure I would like it there.  I've heard bad things about that section.  I may just put in for the job for heck of it--he might not even pick me.  But if he does then I'm not sure what I'll do.....

I'm told the book website will be up shortly.  Of course, I thought it would be up yesterday - I'm hoping before I leave for LACC that the site will be up and running and that everyone here will be up and running to order their copies.  The first fifty people who order will receive a little something special with or in their copies.

Will they be hand-delivered by Kevin Spirtas?

WRTV Channel Six....formerly WFBM Channel Six (home station of Frances Farmer Presents from 1958-64) - lets the public vote online for the TOP FIVE stories of the day and present them on air in that order.

Frances Farmer Presents was the Number One local television show in its slot for its entire run - against cartoons, another movie, AND the Mickey Mouse Club.  Frances was fired in September, 1964.  In the "history" of the station FROM CRYSTAL TO COLOR published in 1965, Frances and her program were NOT even mentioned.

Howard Caldwell, longtime newscaster at WFBM, has stated many times that Channel Six News was number one and remained number one for years because of the audience lead-in delivered by FFP.

Good Afternoon!

Back to DC... Back to work...

We had our first understudy rehearsal for Cabaret this afternoon.  It went very well.  We basically did a run-through of the show just to see where everyone is in their readiness, and, I have to say, everyone seems pretty ready to go on should the need arise.  After the run, we did some solo work on the musical numbers, and tomorrow will be a dance day.  And then...  We may just end up having one more u/s rehearsal next week, and then just have the required put-in rehearsal should someone need to go on as the run of the show progresses.  So...

My feet are really really really really (that's FOUR!!!) tired.

I feel as if I was pounding the pavement for eight hours.

Wait a sec, that's exactly what I was doing, out in the parking lot all day, wrangling shopping carts.

But the weather was wonderful (not too hot, not too cloudy, just right), and it's amazing how keeping a smile on my face and a friendly greeting gets the same from the customers in return.

My hunch is, tomorrow I'll be pounding the pavement again.  Dixie, the front-end manager, had a hunch that my hunch was correct when I mentioned what my hunch was.

Back from setting keys - all keys for these three songs were changed to accomodate the singers.  We're a bit concerned about the girl who's playing the daughter - she was my only choice for the role (and she read it well), but she's got some pitch problems and isn't strong.  She's got her work cut out for her, I'll say that.  I'm hoping once she gets secure with the character and the music, that she'll come through.

Or, if the weather's nice, how 'bout Central Park?  You know, Oct. 5 is the 1-year anniversary of our big eating/walking tour, so it's fitting that a band of Hainsies/Kimlets should follow DR Jose around some part of New York that day.  I think Richard and I will want to be at St. Thomas Church, at 53rd & 5th for a 4pm evensong service.

Argh! Well, after spending an hour trying to navigate and figure out why my account was "limited" (i.e. "useless")  and that it would take 2-4 business days of PayPal putting small amounts of money in the bank and me calling the bank to verify that it had arrived, I finally just called them and after I got a real person on the phone, he resolved it in 2 minutes. Whew!

So I ordered a book! Yay!

I see on the order page that there's a blurb from adorable guitarist extraordinaire Grant Geissman. He played on the music session for the last feature I cut, "The Adventures of Ociee Nash". I was the music supervisor on that one, so I got to lay out the music for that, pick the composer, and was able to work with my friend, Van Dyke Parks. Grant's playing was splendiferous. His book "Foul Play" is also recommended!

"How to write" looks great...I can't wait to dig in!

Good Evening!

Well, if you really want to follow me around again...  Central Park sounds like a great idea - especially if the weather is nice.  We could start on the West or East side and walk across the Park via the Reservoir.  And we could check out the respective Eastside and Westside neighborhoods before or after.

Or another option would be to check out Central Park South.  We could start at the Time-Warner Center, then walk eastward.  We'd pass the big hotels on CPS, then come to the new Apple Store - where we could all check in via the "public computers" there - and even take a photo there too!  Then there's all the great stores over there too - Bloomingdales, etc. - as well as some great places to grab a bite to eat.

Or we could do the northeast corner of the Park and check out the sculpture garden there.

Or...

Or...

Edisaurus, you'll find that Grant is one of my best friends.  He's designed the last three books I've written, and he's played on about fifty of my albums, plus we've done about five solo albums together.  He and Van Dyke go way back.  On the Nudie Musical DVD first pressings, the soundtrack CD also includes all his arrangements of my score that we used for the documentary.  He also musical directed the most recent Guy Haines album.

Jose - Richard and I are planning the Cloisters for Tuesday or Wednesday.  Will you be around then?  I think DRs Cillaliz and jhvw opted out of that excursion.

OH!!!!

And I just remembered that that first weekend in October happens to be "Open House New York".  Basically, it's a design and architecture event, and a bunch of museums and other institutions open their doors for free that weekend.

Here's the website for the event:

http://www.ohny.org/ohny_website/start.html (http://www.ohny.org/ohny_website/start.html)

They're still putting together the list of the events and freebies, however, the following site has picked up some advance news:

Right now, I believe I will be in NYC on the Sunday and Monday of that week, and then back Wednesday night thru Friday morning, so... I should be around sometime during that week.  ;)

Edisaurus, you'll find that Grant is one of my best friends.

And what a talented friend to have! I could tell that Van Dyke was very fond of him and they had a vibe that spoke volumes about how much they'd worked together and could almost read each other's minds. I don't know if Grant would remember me since he was locked in a glass booth most of the time, but please tell him that the editor of "Ociee"   www.ociee.com  sends her regards. His smooth guitar licks made that session. I was awestruck when I heard that he'd be playing on our little soundtrack! Lucky us!

Actually, I was in the midst of adding Grant and other musicians to our imdb listing and saw the "Nudie" documentary and that's what led me to your site. So I owe Grant, bigtime!

We did that session at the late, lamented Cello Studios. I was sorry to see that it is no more.   :'(

3 newbie questions:

How do you add your zodiac sign?

If I put my computer to sleep, am I still logged on? And is it impolite to stay logged on when you're not really there? Is it kind of like leaving the toilet seat up? Or is it more of a "if a tree falls in the woods" situation?

What is an avatar? I was complimented on mine but I'm not sure whether to feel flattered.... I would like to feel flattered....

Well, it is open 24 hours, so...  You could always pop over to Dylan's Candy Bar and/or Serendipity for a frozen hot chocolate, then head back to the Apple Store for some latenight window-shopping and web-surfing.

OHH I love Serendipity - I went there last time and had a frozen hot chocolate. It was yummy

1) If I remember correctly, you get your zodiac sign automatically when you put in your birthday (although, I don't know if it requires the year for those who don't wish to divulge that information ;)).

2) Once you close your browser, you do not show up as logged in.  The "stay logged in" option is just so that you don't have to enter your password whenever you come to the site.

3) Your avatar (and I learned this on this here site) is your picture, which you've already added. :)

;D

If you go to "edit profile" at the top of the page and add you birthday, it will add your horoscope and will add your birthday to the calendar so everyone will send you wishes when the day arrives.  An avatar is your picture, feel flattered

DR Edisaurus - you can be sure if we'd met you sooner and weren't already committed to The Drowsy Chaperone that night, we'd have an HHW contingent there!

BTW - your avatar is the photo or, in my case, cariacture that appears under your name in all your posts.  I think, if you add your birthday to your profile, your sign will automatically appear.   As for your etiquette question - I'm the worst offender of signing on and forgetting to sign off when I go away.  So far, they haven't thrown me out for it  ;)

DR Jose, and the DRs visiting NYC --

If your group ends up at the top northeast corner of Central Park, there is a little hidden gem very close by.  It is called (I believe) the Museum of New York City.  I don't know about the hours, but they have some of the most fascinating theatre memorabilia that I have ever seen.  It is well worth the visit.

And I hope if I have the name or the facts wrong, that wiser and more handsome souls like DR Larry or DR Ben will supply the correct info.

Edisaurus, do you use the Joan Baez "Ballad of" on the SACCO AAND VANZETTI film?  It is my favorite Joan Baez.  I wore out, at least, one LP.

And when you get the chance, be sure to pick up Guy Haines latest CD.  It is phenomenal!  With all due respect to BK, Mr Haines is the real reason we all come here.

DR TCB, it's interesting that you mention that. No, we don't use the song--it's a bit out of character with our score, but we do use clips from the film, as well as other dramatic interpretations of the case. We even have Henry Fonda talking about Vanzetti in a clip from "The Male Animal". We also went to Italy to interview Montaldo, who directed that film, and filmed Sacco's niece in Sacco's hometown of Puglia.

I have put together a mix of S&V related songs for a future program on WFMU in NY when we have our theatrical release. We did this with our last film, and played 2 hours of different versions of "The Internationale". (I think that show is still archived on their website.) So we will certainly use the song then. I also include it on a mix CD I made for walk-in music before screenings. I may have an extra copy which I could give you since yours is worn out!

One thing I learned about shooting in Italy (it was my first time there but I hope not my last!) is that you have to allow a lot more time to move your gear, because the elevators are the size of tiny closets and it takes at least 10 trips every time you have to relocate equipment!

I will definitely check out the new Guy Haines CD, too. So much to explore in your world!

Tonight's episode of PROJECT RUNWAY is supposed to be ON THIN ICE.

The "delay" has to do with the timing of the Fall Fashion Week showings last week of the finalists.  -The New York Times and The Washington Post actually had lengthy reviews of the shows - they should have posted a "Spoiler Alert" before them.  ;)

I'm guessing Bravo will have a "PR" Marathon sometime in the next week or two, along with the reunion show, and then the Finale.

I got in the mail today the DVD of FABULOUS! The History of Queer Cinema. It's kind of a companion piece to THE CELLULOID CLOSET starting with Kenneth Angar's FIREWORKS in 1947 and continuing through BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The emphasis is more on lesbian cinema this time though certainly gay male cinema is also covered. The talking heads aren't quite the starry caliber of Susan Sarandon or Tom Hanks, but it's nice to see some behind the scenes folks like writers and producers and directors as well as actors narrate this history.

Enjoyable but I liked THE CELLULOID CLOSET better.

Hiya, gang.

Just got back from the reading Chez Kimmel. I am so happy to have heard it once again with real. live, actors and with the new songs melded into the play. We got nice laughs, good scene transisitons, everyone liked the songs.

Bruce's friend Jennifer was good enough to read the stage directions, in a clear, musical, mellifluous (LOVE that word.) voice. Sandey Grinn (who was nominated for an Emmy for his puppetry on DC Follies. Twice. And had a recurring role on Babylon 5 and Zoobilee Zoo.) read the Older Men. Cason of BRAIN fame read the Younger Men. I read the Older Women and Jolie Summers read Young Miriam.

If we can effect the few necessary changes (which BK and i will discuss tomorro at some point) and get a good demo of the songs, I have every confidence we'd be picked up for a subsidized staged reading at any of a number of venues that have readings of new works as part of their season. I love the workshop process - in which you get to try things out, maybe scrap some, maybe use some - with good actors being paid to work on your material. So, I'm really up for the 18 months or so ahead of us, getting ready for a full production, on somebody else's nickel!

My memory is that all of it was done in front of an audience (the show your talking about was taped in Orem at their then brand-new studio - at least it was if Lorne Greene was one of the guests - if not, it was the KTLA studios in Hollywood).  All the musical stuff was prerecorded.

It was with Cindy Williams and Paul Lynde
Videotaped at Goldenwest Videotape Division
Title: Re:1962

Ah, Golden West is KTLA.

Edisaurus, I've passed your hello on to Grant.  I think I may have one copy of the two disc Nudie left.  Let me check before you place an order should you want to place an order.  They also show up on eBay from time to time, but you really have to make sure the seller knows in advance that it's two discs (one DVD, one CD).

I was very pleased with the reading, about which more later.  There were only a handful of things that I thought needed tweaking and I noted them in my script.  The one thing that was very clear is that the piece has a firmer structure and there is much more clarity now.  The songs seem to fit right in nicely.  I thought the actors did well.

Dear BK -- I'm glad your reading went well, and that the Brain is feeling solid, together, and working smoothly.  Am I remembering correctly that you told DP Kerry and I that the opening night is Dec. 4th ?  At least I think that is what I remember?

and speaking of KTLA ....  I think my grandfather and I used to watch Dick Laine ("leatherbritches") host the wrestling matches on very early TV.

Well, certainly if you've read Kritzer Time you'll remember that Benjamin watched Dick Lane (Whoa, Nellie!) and wrestling ALL the time.

The Brain opens on my birthday - December 8th.

I'm doing the Wussburger thing (and admitting to it ::) ) because I MUST get to work early!  I'm leaving work early (3:00 PM) to go to Seattle to see the national tour of Wicked!!  I can't wait!!  I finally get to see it. ;D But I must.  I also have to drive very carefully because I'll be driving some co-workers.  We're also going to The Cheesecake Factory for dinner.  I've never been.  I hear it's pretty good. :)

And I also have to get gas at lunch time so that we can just leave when we all assemble at my car.  Good night, BK (and any guests).
