Title: THE SECOND DAY
Post by: bk on September 26, 2006, 09:39:24 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes told you all about day - damn - the second day, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be home around day - damn - the 165th day.

I remember a review of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE which was entitled "They All Axed for You."  I think the review was in the Boston Phoeniks newspaper.

I'm getting into bed now - am watching some Scottish person's late-night show - never heard of him or the show.  Marie Osmond is the guest - what has happened to my darling Marie.  She's looking very puffy and she now sounds like Dyan Cannon on speed.

Today is my sister's birthday!  We're having dinner at a local restaurant in downtown Olympia called The Urban Onion.  Inside the restaurant, there's a big mural over the kitchen area with the title, The Herb and Onion.  Cute, huh? ;)

Anyway, I bought my sister the complete first season of "Here Comes the Brides."  We used to watch this when we first moved to Olympia and I've never seen it since.  My sister has said that she'd love to get a copy of the DVD...and she is!! ;D
Title: Re:THE SECOND DAY

What's interesting is that my sister's name is Diane and her former mother-in-law's name is also Diane!  Actually, her name is Sharon, but she goes by her middle name, Diane.  AND BOTH of their birthdays are today!  September 27th!  AND my sister married a Martin and Martin's father is also named Martin!

I loved this show, too.

The bluest sky you’ve ever seen, in Seattle.
And the hills the greenest green, in Seattle....

We lived there when I was a child; by the time this show aired, we had moved many more times. (My father was in the service). It used to always make me nostalgic (can children get nostalgic?) for the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Wednesday morning greetings!

...It used to always make me nostalgic (can children get nostalgic?) for the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

DR Edisaurus, I think, yes, children can get nostalgic.  I was born in Portland, Oregon, and my family moved to Detroit before I was 3 years old.  As I grew up, my parents and sister recounted memories of their time in the Pacific Northwest vividly enough to create great nostalgia for me, even though I have no first-hand memories of living there.

CONGRATULATIONS, BK, ON SEEING YOUR NEW BOOK IN PRINT!
Although my own achievements are indeed humble next to yours, I do know the thrill of seeing what may have been years of effort--and dreams--materialize into an ACTUAL BOOK! You should be proud--you've earned it!

DR Edisaurus, have you read the Kritzer trilogy yet? Talk about nostalgia! Also, very funny and very sweet. You've settled in so quickly here, but your HHW indoctrination would not be complete with the trilogy.

Good morning, all!  I slept late, I can work at home today, and I can have a meeting with my Dear Friend BK whenever the time is best for him.

I'm still basking in the glow of three productions at NYMF.  I am so looking forward to the reading of THE LAST STARFIGHTER on Friday.

I have nothing more to add, so I'll stop.

Perhaps we should ask DR MBarnum if he is familiar with Aks,  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289845/) since it is the title of a thriller filmed in India.

The thought of our esteemed BK appearing in a Bollywood film is intriguing.  He can sing, he can dance, he can act... perhaps there's a whole new world for him to conquer out there!

That Scottish person is Craig Ferguson who's had a late night show on CBS for a couple of years now. I don't watch late night television at all, but I'd watch Conan O'Brien on NBC if I watched anyone (he comes on opposite Craig Ferguson).

Reminder: there is a new PROJECT RUNWAY on tonight at 10. The final elimination before Fashion Week.

BTW, they had some of the designs for all four remaining contestants in this week's ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. Of course, one set of designs was fake since one of them gets eliminated tonight and will not really be participating. Very interesting to see what turned up, especially in light of the some of the comments the judges made at the end of the last episode.

Re: Dancing With the Stars.

Since i just finally realized what my membername and password are i am voting now (it's open till noon).

Anyhow I was checking out the voting system. And it's not exactly how i remember it.

http://abc.go.com/primetime/dancing/vote.html

I thought that it did not matter what score you got, that you were in a certain place. But apparently it does matter. This means that the most popular performer will never be leaving even if the judges give them 0.

I don't like this format. I thought that it was even, with the judges counting for half and the public counting for half.

But what they wrote online is that if Jerry springer gets 21 (and let's say the judges awarded 220 points last night).  Then he would have 9.5% of the points.

But if he gets 50% of the public vote. He would have 9.5% + 50%.  That would basically mean he would never leave (and i'm expecting he is quite popular, although not that popular).

So that is why someone like willa who is not popular, and who is not the top by the judges can never do well.

Not sure if that made sense to anyone.  I guess it just means that we need to hope the best performers are popular!

So does that mean you don't have get to wear the dress?

Well, I can still wear the dress if I want to - it's hanging in my dressing room.  ;)  However, it does not look like I will be wearing it on stage in front of an audience, paying or otherwise, anytime soon.

So...

Back from a brisk two mile walk.  Jose, I'll wait until I hear from you at noon, otherwise I'll walk over there before rehearsal (and after their matinee).

Favorite authors: Many are mentioned in the story The Book Scout - I love Harper Lee, Raymond Chandler, Cornell Woolrich, early Stephen King, John Cheever, John Collier, Kaye Gibbons' Ellen Foster, Agatha Christie, and many others.

I don't think you have to read the trilogy first, necessarily, although it sort of informs everything I do - they're a fast read, if that's what you decide.

I read it very fast - too fast, probably - just to get the gist of the references here on HHW.  I've been considering going back and reading the books again at a more leisurely pace.

Some of my favorite authors:  Gail Godwin, Isabel Allende, Susan Vreeland, Adriana Trigiani, Amy Tan, Willa Cather, Dawn Powell.  Since my son was in kindergarten (he's now in year 3 his third year of college), I've shepherded a ladies' book group:

Sound reinforcement for the stage is a fact of life - the artists do it in a subtle fashion - the B'way folks have made B'way all about them (sound design) and they are ruining the theater.  I remember seeing the awful The Capeman and thinking they got it right - very subtle but very pleasing sound reinforcement.  Then I found out that Simon had brought in his long-time engineer Roy Halee.

I'm probably going to bring Vinnie in for The Brain - just to give his two centimes.

Yes DREDISAURUS - that is true.  I have only worked with "sound" people in the theatre and not on TV, Recording, or film - where things are probably MUCH different.  ;D

DR Edisaurus, they're not on Kritzerland.  Go to the HHW home page where Bruce's notes begin every day.  You see where to click on the Kritzer books.

If ordering through HHW, please let me know if the paypal account it's going to is kritzerland.  It should be - when we originally did this it was a different paypal account that no longer exists - so, please be sure it's kritzerland.  Otherwise, you can simply order the three books by going to paypal and putting in kritzerland@adelphia.net and then just add in the costs for the three books, plus only ONE shipping cost.

Edisaurus, the Kritzer trilogy lays the foundation for so much of who BK is today, which is why I mentioned it. BK just said that more eloquently--and more modestly. The character of Benjamin Kritzer is still very alive in today's BK.

Today is my sister's birthday!  We're having dinner at a local restaurant in downtown Olympia called The Urban Onion.  Inside the restaurant, there's a big mural over the kitchen area with the title, The Herb and Onion.  Cute, huh? ;)

You mean this place (http://www.theurbanonion.com/)?

That's it!!  It's been a while since I've had it (and they've changed owners since), but they used to have the best hashbrowns in Olympia...in my humble opinion. :D Otherwise, I love the food (that I've tried).

Yes, Writer's block...

It is a very interesting book. I enjoyed it!

We were discussing the craft of writing and what we saw in the media and popular books today and comparing it with the classics and discussing what worked and what didn't and I told him about your book which  I found to be a fascinating journey. I was also stuck on how to write a scene in a story I am working on and I needed some advice.

I loaned him my copy and he read the book and was very impressed and he asked he could use my copy as a reference for his students to look at in his writing class. He puts up about 20 different books for his students to read and review to observe the different styles and techniques.  He has also seen Deceit and was impressed with the different layers. I had to REALLY struggle not to give the plot away. I was proud of myself and didnt. It was fun to watch their reactions especially when you walked in....

They loved Matt and they have never seen him before at all!

The last one watched this afternoon introduced Dr. McSteamy, the plastic surgeon, who, of course, was jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

I did enjoy Craig Bierko's introduction to BOSTON LEGAL, but the episode wasn't advertised as a two parter, but the cases introduced in this episode certainly were not brought to conclusion by the end of the hour. Denny's dwarf case and Bierko's first case with the murder of a judge were barely begun before the show was over.

There were some good laughs in the show. I did enjoy it; just a bit frustrated that we didn't see the cases brought to a conclusion this week. I did peep at the previews just to make sure the cases were going to continue next week, and they are.

LAW & ORDER: SVU also had some personal baggage getting into the way of the case at hand as Stabler's imminent divorce and estrangement from his oldest daughter were used against him as he appeared as a witness in a similar court case. I guess if these writers are going to bring in personal matters into these procedurals, at least they work them into the cases they're working on.

Edisaurus,
BK's many talents surfaced at a very early age. He knew what he wanted to do when he was 13 or 14 (you would agree, wouldn't you, Bruce?) and is probably the most focused person I've ever met. He was doing in his teens--in this case, acting, singing, songwriting, producing--what others might only do in their twenties or later. Truly precocious. He didn't wait until he finished college to start his career--he just went ahead and started. Little gets in his way. So he had a GIANT head start. All that talent doesn't hurt, either...

I just read the list of those being honored and I must say I’m in very nice company – a Nobel Prize winner, a renowned publisher, producers, poets, musicians, writers, dancers, singers, scientists, physicians, inventors, philanthropists – and – drum roll – Elvis Stojko! It's an opera.  It premiered two years ago in England to some not so wonderful reviews.  Washington National Opera is presenting the American premiere of the opera, and it's been revised since it's original presentation across the pond.  And, at least from what the critics are saying, the revisions were all for the better.

My luncheon date is all set for tomorrow with my friend Rodney Gilfry.  Tonight BK, tomorrow Rodney.  I'm going to write a book, DINING WITH CELEBRITIES.  I'll tell Rodney to expect an interview request in 30 years, DR  MBarnum!

Back from the dinner with the panda author.  Her big news is that the book is being made into a movie, starring Nicole Kidman.  Dinner was a lovely Chinese buffet, but I'm wondering if something on it contained MSG - to which I'm allergic.  If I develop a sick headache soon, we'll know.

Dessert was a generous scoop of rainbow sherbet with a fortune cookie on the side.  Here's my fortune:

"A vacation of vacations is waiting for you."

Pretty appropriate, huh?

And, now, we learn that DR Vixmom will be in for the Thursday mini-tour with DR Jose - YAY!

Back from the dinner with the panda author.
I didn't even know pandas could write! I'll have to check that out!

We have our own panda news here in Atlanta...ours had a baby---a girl! Yay!

I've been sneaking into the zoo occasionally to see them since we know the panda specialist. Greg went over to China and filmed the pair before they came to Atlanta. He got to hold hands with them when they were still little and playful and made cute little puppy noises. Awwwww....nothing cuter than a panda. Except for Sherlock, that is!

No more holding of hands now!

Good Evening!

So... After going over my schedule for the next couple of days, and going down my list of things I need to get done before I head to Mexico, I think I'm just gonna head back to NYC on Sunday, and then stay through Thursday night.  Alas, that means I won't be able to join the gang at Joe Allen's on Saturday night.  However, there is chance that I may be able to head up Saturday afternoon, so... We shall see.

Hmm... Right now, weather.com says it's supposed to be in the upper 60's and "mostly cloudy".  That could work.  I'll be sure to come up with a "rain plan" just in case.  So...  Remember: Everyone bring your umbrellas so that it won't rain!

BONES had an interesting episode about a bigamist with a surprising murderer.

Also we see Agent Seely Booth does not lack for female companionship. Of course, the one woman some fans would want him to be with is the one he is NOT with. But I'm sure the writers will work up to that provided the show continues to run.

JUSTICE had an interesting face-off: Victor Gaber against John Benjamin Hickey. Good dramatic tension there. I'm guessing in real life that the guys are great friends from years of doing shows in NYC during the same periods of time. In the show, they were rivals and mortal enemy litigators.

I didn't hear that teaser. But i would not call it the most surprising ever. I was surprised at the second lowest. But i thought that person was the worst. And while I like the person who went home. I think they were one of the worst as well.

I was pleasantly surprised at the first person saved (willa). I think she is one of the best females (with monique and vivica). I was glad for her.

And i guess my voting for marion payed off. :)

I wasn't that surprised at the eliminated contestant.  His fan base would have been around 20 years ago and they probably don't vote on tv shows.

Well...  Victor Garber was on "The View" today, and he said that the show is not cancelled.  -It was always the plan to get it started, then to go on a hiatus of sorts once the baseball playoffs began.  So...

Here's what I just pulled off the internet about JUSTICE:

"Also in the uncancelled-but-pulled category is the Wednesday legal drama "Justice," which was set to have two more pre-baseball airings. Instead, the episode scheduled for Oct. 4 will move to this Wednesday and the Oct. 4 hour will be filled by a repeat of "House."

Sources at FOX say that the "Justice" move was simply to avoid using a new episode of the show against the season premiere of "Lost" and that "Justice" will still return in November as planned.

Coming from TV procedural titan Jerry Bruckheimer, "Justice" is more likely to get the benefit of the doubt than "Happy Hour," which received some of the fall's most savage reviews and has failed to find even minimal traction on Thursday nights."

Yes, DR Matt H, the photo of Rodney is from the San Francisco Opera production of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which also starred my BABES IN TOYLAND colleague Elizabeth Futral as Stella.  I believe I first saw him in a production of COSI FAN TUTTE, and I think he's wonderful on the Encores! NEW MOON recording.  Rodney is Danilo on a wonderful DVD of THE MERRY WIDOW from Zurich.  Unfortunately, it's in German, but the production of DIE LUSTIGE WITWE is quite beautiful.  I wish someone would tape a performance of Britten's BILLY BUDD with him or Nathan Gunn or Christopher Maltman.

I had a lovely dinner with my Dear Friend BK, and I must tell you all how much I like the score to THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X.  It's silly, very catchy, and it will be fun to work on.

Now, to catch up on PROJECT RUNWAY's latest episode.

Back from a long rehearsal and a lovely meal and discussion with elmore.  Despite all good intentions (and an understanding director), I probably used my voice too much this evening - I'm not necessarily a good "marker" although I tried.    Well, I'm going to beg off a lunch date tomorrow and just do what I've been doing, which seems to work - i.e. walk and sit in my room like so much fish, not talking at all.

I saw All The Kings Men yesterday, I liked it although there are too many of the same genre and style of movie out recently, its kind of odd...

I have a dilemma in which I need to choose a 5-10 minute movie clip which inspires me...I realize this is a personal choice, but I was wondering if there were any recommendations because I have not seen every movie ever made.

Ill be spamming this message because I really am curious to hear recommendations.
