Media report...
DVD - empty
VCR - Bobby McFerrin Spontaneous Inventions
CDs - Bobby McFerrin & Chick Corea Play, Dave Brubeck Quartet Time Out, Follies OBC
-
Well, I had hoped to get this onto "yesterday's" notes, but, thankfully, I "copy-ed" before I hit Post... Or else, I truly would have been in a frenzy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, since I've talked about them, I might as well post the recipe:
Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee Cookies
Combine in a medium bowl:
1 cup flour
2 cups oatmeal (regular, not quick cooking)
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped (I usually a little bit more than 1/2 cup)
In a mixing bowl, cream the following:
1 stick of butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
Beat until light and fluffy. Then add:
1 egg
1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract
1/4 cup maple syrup (Grade B has better flavor)
Beat until well combined.
Add flour/pecan mixture to butter mixture, and mix on lowest speed until just combined - does not take long at all.
Add:
1 cup chocolate chips (I prefer milk chocolate in these cookies)
1/3-1/2 cup toffee chips (I use Skor bits, but Heath bits are good too - or even Bits O' Brickle)
Blend until just combined.
Drop dough onto prepared cookie sheets - parchment or Silpats make clean up a breeze! - in walnut-sized balls. Bake in a 350 oven for about 12-14 minutes, rotating sheets about half-way through cooking time. Cool cookies on baking sheets/parchment for at least 10 minutes, then remove cookies from parchment and place on cooling rack. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies.
OH, then EAT!!!
"Arglraglgraralgrlgargalrglarlaalalgghh"
The original recipe called for just pecans and chocolate chips... I just experimented one day adding the toffee bits... and liked the results! Chocolate chunks, or even chopped up Skor or Heath bars would work also.
-And the dough is also very easy to mix by hand too, but I've gotten used to doing it in my Kitchenaid.
*I was amazed the first time I made this recipe that I got so many cookies from just one stick of butter and one cup of flour. And with two cups of oatmeal, and the half cup of pecans... it's actually a semi-healthy cookie.
And for that "special touch", you can press pecan halves (one or two) into the top of each dough ball before baking.
-
My DVD player suddenly became available - I got thirty minutes into The Looking Glass War, which has to be one of the worst movies ever made. Perhaps I'll finish Mr. Demy's Bay of Angels, and then it's on to The Great Gatsby with Mr. Robert Redford and Miss Mia Farrow.
-
Here's what I think - I think dear reader Jose should bake up a batch and send them to me in time for my Christmas Eve Do, which, by the way (BTW in Internet lingo) is on Christmas Eve.
-
And, I assume, definately not the Peaches 'n Cream oatmeal flavor.
-
. . . and as Ito:
Joel Grey. No. George Takei. No. Bruce Lee/Jet Li/Chow Yun Fat. No. Judge Lance Ito and/or any one of the many and sundried Dancing Ito's.
--Darn! Too late!
-
OMG!
I just sampled one of the Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee Cookies - with extra Toffee.... Sooo good!! The extra toffee is a keeper!
*And because of the toffee, I highly recommend using parchment paper. Makes clean up a snap, and you can also prep subsesquent sheets of cookies in advance. Just put the paper on the counter, and once the next sheet is available, just slide the paper on the cookie sheet, and place it in the oven.
-
And, I assume, definately not the Peaches 'n Cream oatmeal flavor.
EEEEWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Does anyone feel that dear reader Jose has just ignored my request?
We got us some late night denizens here at haineshisway.com, so joing us and let us have us a proper posting frenzy. Has anyone noticed that I wrote "joing" us? I cannot see straight, that is the problem. I also cannot see crooked.
-
And furthermore, does anyone feel that dear reader Jose has ignored my request twice>\ I'm trying to type a question mark but I cannot see straight and/or crooded. "Crooded"??? Oh, my, oh, dear.
-
Here's what I think - I think dear reader Jose should bake up a batch and send them to me in time for my Christmas Eve Do, which, by the way (BTW in Internet lingo) is on Christmas Eve.
Hmmm... I'd be more than happy to send you a batch, but I'm not sure I'll have enough time to get them to you in time for Christmas Eve. However, I'll see what I can do. I could do another batch in the morning, and send them out... I'm actually not sure of their "staying" power, since the whole batch is usually eaten up within a day.... Hmm...
Do we have a quorum yet? Do we have decorum yet? Are we at the forum yet?
We need COOKIES.
-
I'm going to bed in ninie minutes. "Ninie" minutes? I tell you, I am deteriorating. I am determined to cross over to 1000 personal posts tonight.
-
I was not ignoring your request, BK. I was just in "Reply" land... If I sent them out tomorrow aftenoon or Saturday morning, you would have them by Tuesday, (I hope)... most definitely by Wednesday (most definitely, I hope)... Something tells me I now have a mission to accomplish!
-Someone cue that 5/4 music!
-
DVD player: Alias, Season 2. Yeah, I watched it in "real time" during last season, but it's fun to go back and get confused all over again.
-
You know, if our ten guests joined our seven perusers we might just have a quorum in the forum. But then, everyone really should post and then we'd have a frenzy and a quorum.
-
As for media check...
I did put the "International Cast Recording" of Blood Brothers in the other day - the one with Petula Clark and the Cassidy fils. I know it's schlock - especially in this overblown orchestral version... But I like it. It's fun.
DR Jed - I've been hankering for some Bobby McFerrin myself lately. I don't have Spontaneous Inventions - Does that have his five minute version of The Wizard of Oz on it? I usually put on Circle Songs - is that the right title - when I need to Zen out.
-
Do we have a quorum yet? I see perusers, I see guests, I see dead people, I see England, I see France, I see someone's underpants.
One more little post and by gum and by golly and buy stocks and buy bonds I'll have done it.
-
They come, they go, like Grand Hotel. Now, it's just me and Pogue and Pogue ain't postin'.
-
Well... It's now 3:40AM here in the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia... and since I have some more baking to do in the morning before heading back up to DC in the afternoon...
Goodnight.
-
Well....now we know DRPanni has never driven an Edsel....or even seen one....how awful!! :o And if it wasn't a DVD - what WAS it?
The notes: What Elmer Bernstein from WHAT John Wayne movie? ???
In the DVD Player: 2001:A Space Odyssey :P
In the CD Player: Camelot Soundtrack, DR Jose inspired me to listen again, I still like it. :'(
In the VCR: DEAD RINGER with Miss Bette Davis and a score by Andre Previn. 8)
Friday at last. Tonight is Game Night at my house and a surprise celebration of my sister's anniversary. We will be playing Careers! ;D
-
DVD: I watched "Solaris" today. Was it Mr Brockman who detested it? I enjoyed it but then I liked the Russian version I saw 20 years ago too.
Cds:(1) Rosemary Clooney (I am obviously in a Clooney mood): White Christmas/Red Garters - (2)Original Cast "A New Brain" (I've just completed making a compilation of "Sailing" songs) (3) Gordon Lightfoot "Summertime Dream" - this of course was for the wonderful "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"- a "sailing" song!!!!
-
Interesting to post a "Solaris" after a "2001". Spooky indeed!
-
"2001" is one of my all time favourite movies. "Solaris" also leaves you with questions not answered - and I don't mean about why they made the movie. Sci Fi is not my genre of choice but I am also a fan of "K-Pax".
-
Perhaps this is the time of the day for only "Gods And Monsters" JRand. 10pm here (Friday) and time to sign off. Good morning/Good night.
-
LOL TOMOVOZ! Perhaps you are right.
I hope your Calling Birds are using Direct Dial, MR BK and not operator assistance, although I am not sure they would be able to punch the numbers they want.
The Zaftig Shar-pei Holly is going to the vet today. My sisters are taking her. Hopefully she will be pronounced well and happy at the end of her 10th year! ;D
The interview with Stephanie J. Block is muy interesante!
And for DREmily - here is a picture of Slapshot the mascot of the Indianapolis Ice - our professional hockey team - the best team ever - playing the best hockey ever - the best American sport in the world. :P
-
I don't have anything in anything yet-- although "Willy Wonka" is still in the VCR from the other night, and "Jeepers Creepers" is still in the car CD player along with Mr. Schwartz's "Uncharted Territory." We'll see what I end up playing later.
Jose, I was going to comment on how good your cookies sounded, but I should probably leave well enough alone. ;>)
I just clicked something and ended up with the text from an e-mail I snet yesterday at the bottom of this post (which I had to erase). How did THAT happen?
-
DVD player: Alias, Season 2. Yeah, I watched it in "real time" during last season, but it's fun to go back and get confused all over again.
I'm curious, has anyone watched the deleted scenes. What kind of stuff do they show?
And BK did you manage to find the first 10 episodes of Season 3 yet?
-
DR Panni wrote:
Despite my misgivings (is there a Mr. Givings?) I wandered out again tonight and went to the Gap in Studio City (open until 10:30!) and found the item I had been looking for all over town - a cute red purse for the offspring - to match the cute sweater I got her. The purse and sweater were featured in all the Gap adds, thus the purse was not to be found. But I saw it on a dummy and wrestled it off its arm.
Ha ha, that cracked me up. I did the same thing last week! My aunt was looking for a gift for a relative, and the item I wanted was on the mannequin. Then after she made me dress it again, cause she didn't like that it was naked for all to see :)
-
I'm up! I'm baking! -Finishing off the peanut butter cookies right now...
-
OOHHH!! The forecasted snow - that was suprised last night - has finally arrived! It's very pretty and white right now. Nice big flakes, and more like a heavy flurry rather than a "fall". And, best of all, it's only supposed to be here for a few (whatever few you wish), and, hopefully, will not cause a problem for my drive back up to DC this afternoon.
-
So, how are you today, Jose? Ready to vent yet?
AND TCB, can I be there when you tie DRJed to a chair to make him watch "Mame" and "Hello Dolly"?
-
Damn..This forum was jumping last night!
Nothing in the VCR at the moment. I was listening to Bruce Springstein on the way to work
Oh! and btw:
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY HANUKKAH EVERYONE ;D[/move]
-
Yay!! I'm no longer a newbie!!
-
As soon as I hand in this paper (In about an hour) I will be FREEEEEE!
-
DR Jose, I guess when you're young, you can exist on a few hours of sleep. I'd be dragging big time if I posted here until after 3 and was up baking cookies before sunrise. Wow!
DR Jed, you said you had never seen MAME or DOLLY. Does that include their (less than perfect) movie versions? I ask because it's difficult to get a feel for either show merely from their cast albums. Both are loads of fun in the theater with all the dancing and production values, things that don't translate on the printed page at all. I just want you to keep an open mind about them. Actually, the script of the movie of DOLLY is better than the book of the stage version, I think. If only they could have cast it better!
-
Media report:
CD - CHRISTMAS WITH BING (Bing Crosby) but I'm hoping WICKED comes either today or tomorrow.
VCR - LOVELY TO LOOK AT
DVD - the last half of ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY after which will come THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW - Season 1.
-
Yes, indeed, Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate!
I just got back from my sleepover, which was a lot of fun...DBF (that's dear best friend) Isis and I watched "Down With Love," which was cute and funny, if rather slight and strained at times. It had some great one-liners, I thought, and the costumes were out of this world. I LOVED the song Here's to Love written by none other than Shaiman and Wittman...these guys can REALLY do Rodgers and Hart style love songs.
DVD--Down With Love, Sunday in the Park with George
VHS--nothing, but I plan to watch Angels in America: Perestroika later today
CD--Funny Girl OCR, Most Happy Fella OCR
I haven't got the Wicked cast recording yet...I know that I'm getting it as a Christmas present. But I HAVE heard "Popular," "Defying Gravity," and "The Wizard and I," and I looove the first 2 songs, not so much the last one. Soooo looking forward to seeing the show...based on these songs, I think I'm going to like the whole score.
-
Jrand: I think I said what the Elmer Bernstein CD was - McQ.
-
Earlier I wrote:
"OOHHH!! The forecasted snow - that was suprised last night - has finally arrived!"
"that was suprised" - ???
"that was supposed to arrive last night" is what I meant, duh!
-And I actually remember losing a spelling bee in 4th grade for misspelling "surprise" - I spelled it like I just did above - that pesky first "r".
-
Not much media this week for me ???
Music wise: assorted Bollywood CDs and some Christmas CDs supplied by DR Jason.
VCR: Taped some movies on TCM this week...forgot what they were, and haven't even watched them yet!
DVD: Half watched LIFE RETURNS starring Onslow Stevens, Lois Wilson, Valerie Hobson while thumbing through next weeks TV guide listings (in other words the movie was a bore!)
Hopefully today's mail will bring some lovely DVDs and I will be able to sit around all weekend and watch them (although I really need to finish up some magazine articles that I am working on!!)
-
I always told my students to remember Gomer Pyle when they wanted to spell "surprise" because with his exaggerated Southern accent, it DID help to remember to put that "r" in there - "SUR-PRISE, SUR-PRISE, SUR-PRISE!"
-
I must be off in a few moment. Why should I be off in a few moments when I can be ON in a few moments. I'm done with being off, I shall now only be on I tell you.
-
I meant to mention that I, too, enjoyed the George Clooney SOLARIS. It was off-kilter and unusual, and I enjoyed just letting it unfold. I've been anxious to watch it again because I think it'll be even more enjoyable the second time with some of the enigma cleared away from a first viewing. I certainly liked 2001 a lot more with each subsequent viewing as I learned more and more of what it was about.
-
McQ - whew! How did I miss the title? I guess I was looking for something longer.... :o
Anyway...SOLARIS both versions are okay. I have only the seen the Russian original once and the American version once.
DRMBARNUM - I hope you get some DVD's to watch, you wouldn't want to work too hard on those articles! ;D
At long last my ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST DVD is on its way! 8)
-
We are busy making fudge today. Mmmm. No CDs today -- we are listening to the all-Christmas music station.
-
I always told my students to remember Gomer Pyle when they wanted to spell "surprise" because with his exaggerated Southern accent, it DID help to remember to put that "r" in there - "SUR-PRISE, SUR-PRISE, SUR-PRISE!"
That was actually the title line of a Christmas card I received from a couple who didn't expect grandparenthood from their 41-year-old daughter.
One of the CDs is a compilation disc a friend of mine made of leading ladies who can't sing. Included:
Bette Davis: Just Turn Me Loose On Broadway
Lauren Bacall: Hurry Back
Elizabeth Taylor: Send in the Clowns
Shirley Booth: Song of the Ma
Shelly Winters: They Give Me Love
Lillian Gish: Little Hands
Katherine Hepburn: Lonely Mamoiselle
Lucille Ball: We Need a Little Christmas
Oh, DR Jason - That is very interesting about The Boy From Oz shutting down during Hugh Jackman's vacations. I guess it is a smart move on behalf of the producers - and more or less an admission that the only thing selling the show is Mr. Jackman. -And I just have to wonder what his standby thinks? And I wonder what kind of payroll arrangement they're making during those weeks for the rest of the cast?
*And it was very nice reading that Mr. Jackman has not missed a performance yet.
**And I just checked out his standby's website... That's nice too! ;D http://www.kevinspirtas.com (http://www.kevinspirtas.com)
And speaking of producers - I just read the blurb about the producers of The Producers cancelling their $1,500 a plate(!) New Year's Eve bash due to slow sales. DUH! And they're even considering - according to the article - lowering the show only price from $600 to $250-300. ?!?!?!?!
-
Andrea if you are reading this am being held hostage in the McLennan Library.
I am in the big computer area to the right of the elevators when you walk in.
Save me. Please. The databases are getting to me. I am seeing the world in advanced search format. :P
-
Noel--HAHAHA, that's hilarious! Though I would have added Tallulah Bankhead on there.
Jose--*sigh* Is it any wonder that people think of theatre as an elitist art form these days?
-
Nothing in the CD at the moment.
I will be watching the DVD of MORGAN later tonight. Last night we watched A KID FOR TWO FARTHINGS. A strange and I think ulitimately unsatisfying movie. But the weird theme keeps haunting me. We also watched LORD LOVE A DUCK...which the lovely wife Julieanne did not love as much as me, though she loved Roddy McDowell. My favourite scenes are those with Max Showalter. Hey! Hey! Hey!
-
I am very thrilled. My CD for WICKED came today, and I will be listening to it later today after I return from lunch and finish the DVD of ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY.
-
AND TCB, can I be there when you tie DRJed to a chair to make him watch "Mame" and "Hello Dolly"?
Only if you bring a note from your other half, Kerry.
-
I'm on, baby, I'm on. In the car I'm listening to the Valley of the Dolls soundtrack - it's marvy, what with the divoon Barbara Parkins' opening narration over Johnny Williams' beautiful arrangement of Andre Previn's song.
-
I'm on, baby, I'm on. Did you think you were reading the same post as above? Was I messing with your minds? I'm on, I tell you. Ladies and germs, it was so cold this morning that I fell out of bed and broke my pajamas.
-
ugggh! It is so boring here today..half the office is out for the holiday and no one is calling! :P
so..has everyone finished their holiday shopping yet?
I'm just starting today! eeek!
-
Good morning all
I am running around like a madwoman, trying to get everything done before I leave for Christmas. Well, actually at the moment I'm lying on the floor in front of my computer and drinking peppermint tea, but soon I shall be running around like a madwoman. I woke up with a rather upset stomach this morning, but I am determined to shake it by this evening, when I shall be driving across the state to see DR Jed in Christmas Carol. Jed is probably shaking his head as he reads this...I have a history of getting the flu every time I try to get over to see him...it's erie at times. But hopefully the nausea will go away soon. I must go clean the kitchen now....
-
I could swear I hear a rim shot when I read that last post.
-
All the same Christmas stuff as last week is in my media players. I bought WICKED and haven't had a chance to listen to it nor any of the other new stuff I got including the score to the Broadway A TASTE OF HONEY which has finally been released on CD (my LP has been worn out for years) plus sountracks for 2 Doris Day films: PAJAMA GAME and JUMBO (the last three were part of a buy 2 get 1 Free sale form "Nina's Discount Oldies").
Okay - it's a day late, but anyone who saw the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" would know just what kind of a performance Mickey Rooney could give as Ito.
Sad day at work. My boss passed away this morning. Actually he had been out sick since April and his son is running the company now (and much easier to work for than his dad) but this was the man who hired me and we always got along great. I talked to him Monday and he sounded like he was in perfect health and readey to return any day. He was 87 and World Confections is his legacy.
No, Ann, you are supposed to be sick AFTER you see Jed's performance.
-
To mark the beginning of Hannukah this evening, my CD player is filled with..........six Christmas music CDs. All of them are anthologies, along the lines of "Cabaret Christmas," "Nipper's Greatest Christmas Hits," "Capitol Sings Christmas," etc.
I saw The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King last night, Dear Readers. Normally, I am not a big fan of films of this genre, but I must admit that I have been quite impressed by the entire trilogy. I think this final installment is probably the best effort of the three films. My only real quibble with the picture (and this has already been voiced by many others) is that its last half hour seemed to be filled with three or four alternative endings.
Confession: For all the alternative endings already included in the picture, there is yet one more ending that I really would have liked to have seen (untrue as it may be to the book), and that would be for Viggo Mortensen and Orlando Bloom to fall into each others' arms and ride off into the sunset together.
-
I'm on, baby. These foreign cars today are so small that I stuck out my hand to make a left turn and two of them ran up my sleeve.
I'm on, baby. I'm so paranoid that when I go to a football game and the players get in a huddle I think they're talking about me.
I'm on, baby.
Valley of the Dolls Original Soundtrack trivia:
The "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" on the soundtrack album is sung by Miss Dory Previn. Dionne Warwick who sings it on the actual film soundtrack was of course under contract to another record company (Scepter) and released her own version....45 rpm & album.
"I'll Plant My Own Tree" is sung on the soundtrack album by Eileen Wilson, although it is sung in the film by Margaret Whiting (lip motions by Miss Susan Hayward, instead of the originally cast Judy Garland, who had pre-recorded the song).
Although it is hard to tell the difference ( :D), Patty Duke's songs were recorded and are on the soundtrack album by Jackie Ward (?), I think. Some other DR has corrected this information in the past, and perhaps he will step forward again!
And that's all I know about that, practically. :P
-
I'm on, too, baby.
I'm not saying my uncle drank a lot - but two years after he died, his liver won a Charleston contest.
-
Nearly an hour between posts! Perhaps the jokes were so tired everyone went to sleep.
-
Let them stay away. Let them be errant and truant. I no longer care. Let them eat cake.
-
CD player: the soundtrack from The Living Sea, music by Sting and Steve Wood (no realation). It's very mellow, exactly what I need/want right now.
Dang, I wish my Dad had sent our boxes of media he has, instead of deciding to wait until after Christmas. I'd be listening to Christmas music now, if he had. As it is, we have none in the house.
I may have to head on over to WalMart to see what's on sale.
That's one area that der Brucer and I have found Rehoboth Beach lacking, a decent electronics/music/DVD store. There's a shop on Outlet Mall Three that deals in music and DVDs, but it's not very good. You'd think that a town like this, with a larger than typical gay population, would have a store that specializes in show tunes, but no one has thought of such a thing. We're even lacking in a fantastic book store. Thus, no Wicked for me, or the rest.
-
Do you mind if I stick with toast this morning (Breakfast time here BK) and partake of cake later? The demands of Christmas etc seems to be hitting us all. Quality not quantity is here. Perhaps it is siesta time on the east coast.
-
I care not if the errant and truant are errant and truant. We will be here, having a swellegant time and feeling the Christmas spirit.
I'm on, baby. I was so nervous the first time I flew on an airplane, I turned to the man next to me and said, "Isn't flying amazing? Those people down there, they look like ants." He said, "Those are ants you idiot, we haven't taken off yet."
-
I think bk in channeling Henny Youngman. Take his wife, PLEASE.
-
Speaking of Henny Youngman... Tomorrow I go to Bob Hope Airport to pick up my daughter. We've got John Wayne and now Hope around here. So let's think of some airports named after ladies in our biz. And where they would be. Like where would the Carol Channing Airport be? Or the Marilyn Monroe Airport?
-
Dr JRand, you are correct about all of those dubbers on the soundtrack album except Patty Duke's. That's not Jackie Ward on the album. It's the same girl that dubbed her in the picture: Gail Heideman.
-
Thanks to all those DRs who encouraged me to buy the ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY DVD instead of merely being content with the cast album CD. It adds immeasurably to see her act her songs and tell her stories. Yep, there were tears in my eyes at the end.
-
What care I for the errant and truant? What care I for tinsel and glamor?
-
Which LA area airport was renamed for Bob Hope?
-
I think it was the Palm Springs airport, DR WEL.
-
Thanks MATTH - Gail....I think you were the one who set me straight last time....yes....how could I forget? Because I knew someone knew the facts, ma'am....the facts.
-
Tired jokes? These are tired jokes?
These are not tired jokes, these are classics!!!!
Two seagulls talking:
Gertrude: Have seen those new sports cars?
Heathcliff: Yup, I spotted one yesterday.
-
This one, I think, is from Myron Cohen.
The old guy was really nervous. It was his first flight, but he had to be in Chicago for business. Seated next to him was a big football-player type. Shortly after the plane left Laguardia, the football guy dozed off, the plane hit some turbulence, and the old man barfed all over his seatmate. A few minutes later the big guy woke up. Without missing a beat, the old man turned to him and asked, in a concerned voice, "Feeling better?"
-
As much as I admire Margaret Whiting, I think Eileen Wilson clearly outsings her on "I'll Plant My Own Tree." I have an old Movietone (Fox) label album of Marilyn Monroe vocals from some of her Fox movies, and on the GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES duets, Jane Russell's vocals are done by Eileen WIlson on that LP. Eileen is a wonderful singer. (She dubbed Ava Gardner in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and THE HUCKSTERS, too.)
-
What about naming one for Gypsy Rose Lee? After all, they used to be called air strips[/color].
-
I'm on, baby. Guy came up to me in the street and said, "I haven't had a bite in weeks." So, I bit him.
-
Well, here's a nice little story. As I was typing away upstairs in my office, I hear this commotion downstairs. I live alone, have no pets of any kind, but there was definitely something downstairs. Walk in the kitchen and there is a squirrel splashing away in some pans I had soaking in the sink. He came down the chimney, pushed open the glass doors in front of the fireplace, and ran into the kitchen looking for another escape route. I opened the kitchen doors (main door and screen door), went to get a broom to shoo him out, and he left before I could get in there.
That's a first, and I've been here since 1982!
-
In my CD player at work: "Sousa For Orchestra" this CD includes 6 songs written for the musical Teddy and Alice. After that will be the original cast recording to Avenue Q! :D I just got it from the library and will listen to it very shorty.
In my DVD player at home: The entire (on 4 recordable DVDs from my sister's boyfriend) "Angels In America." I won't be able to watch the whole thing tonight and I'm going to be gone most of the whole weekend, but I'll start watching it tonight.
In my VCR: nothing.
I've only read the first page, so now I have to go back and catch up (but not catsup) with the rest of what's going on. ;)
-
Well, I'm back up in Fairfax, and about to head into the theatre... and I'm stopping at the post office on the way in too... Let's hope the lines are short - yeah, right - or at least filled with plenty of eye candy and/or characters.
See you after I give the final downbeat...
What care I for the errant and truant? What care I that I am all alone on this board? I care not. I not care. Care not I. Care I not.
And why don't I care? Because I'm ON, baby.
-
Oh, I forgot to mention that our very own ladodgerjon is a brand new daddy to a healthy bouncing baby boy.
-
MDS: That "Chicago Assassins" is one of my most treasured CDs. Kind and positive thoughts are sent your way at each playing. Let's hope "Assassins" does indeed make it to Broadway this coming year. Hope it does not get "bounced" again.
-
Congratulations new dad ladodgerjon. Another sagitarian. A wonderful life is assured.
Which LA area airport was renamed for Bob Hope?
I think it was the Palm Springs airport, DR WEL.
Actually, it is Burbank Airport. Although Mr. Hope did maintain a residence in the Palm Springs area, his main domicile was in Toluca Lake, which is adjacent to Burbank.
-
Well, Mr. Kimmel just beat me to my very favourite joke of the ilk that he has been peppering the boards with..."a man came up to me and said he hadn't had a bite in weeks, so I bit him." For some idiotic reason, this one particularly cracks me up.
I call these saucy little witticisms, "Have an accident" jokes, you know...
Have an accident? No thanks, just had one.
Call me a cab! Okay, you're a cab
I was thinking.... Oh, how do you like it so far?
Of course, the inimitable Groucho was the best at this sort of thing.
I once shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How he got in my pyjamas, I'll never know.
Can I understand this? Why a four year old child could understand this! Run out and get me a four year old child, I can't make head nor tail of this!
-
Foghorn Leghorn was also pretty good with a snappy one-liner or comeback: I say, that boy's so dumb he thinks the Mexican border pays rent.
Just a quick post here, folks, to let everyone know I arrived in South Carolina bright-eyed and bushy tailed at 9:40 a.m. yesterday, est. I took a nap from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. And then I went to bed at 9:30 p.m.
Today, I was up at 7 a.m. and we put in a full day, traveling to visit a cousin and to place flowers on family graves. We also had some great lunch at a place called Wade's, and we went shopping, too.
I haven't gotten my copy of "Wicked" yet. It was shipped Monday and should have been delivered here Wednesday via UPS. Not one visit that we know of from UPS as of yet.
But this is the south...and things just don't get rushed, whether you pay for "rush" or not!
I feel a bit outside of myself, still, but I'm glad to be here.
Will try to keep up with the reading. Haven't read yesterday's yet, but there has been so little time.
-
RE Today's notes: the newest Le Carre book "Absolute Friends" was reviews in today's paper here. I think I have read all this novels. Some of the TV shows have worked. "A Perfect Spy" was wonderfully done but the films don't seem to have the same tensions. The last book of Le Carre's I read was "The Constant Gardener" which is somewhat of an indictment of the world's major drug companies and their lack of morality.
-
So little time indeed. That is why one must keep up, whether on the road or at home. What care I for time? I'm fairly exhausted and am ready to get out of here, but I shall not be out before six.
-
Thanks, DRJAY!
I agree with DR MATTH - Eileen is a terrific singer!
The Gypsy Rose Lee Landing Strip is inspired!
How about the Patty Duke Flatlands Airport?
The Petula Clark Downtown Airport?
The Jane Russell Twin Cities Airport?
-
I'm on, baby. These foreign cars today are so small that I stuck out my hand to make a left turn and two of them ran up my sleeve.
I'm on, baby. I'm so paranoid that when I go to a football game and the players get in a huddle I think they're talking about me.
I'm on, baby.
Yup BK, you're on, alright...but WHAT[/i] are you on? That's what I'd like to know! ;D
-
Yup BK, you're on, alright...but WHAT[/i] are you on? That's what I'd like to know! ;D
Dolls, probably ;)
Good news, the peppermint tea did its job, and my tummy is calm again. More good news, I'm packed and ready to go tonight. Even more good news, the baby has learned to blow raspberries on my arm..which he is doing a lot...he sounds like a beginner band trombone player...
-
DR Jed, you said you had never seen MAME or DOLLY. Does that include their (less than perfect) movie versions? I ask because it's difficult to get a feel for either show merely from their cast albums. Both are loads of fun in the theater with all the dancing and production values, things that don't translate on the printed page at all. I just want you to keep an open mind about them. Actually, the script of the movie of DOLLY is better than the book of the stage version, I think. If only they could have cast it better!
Oh my, did I perhaps misspeak? While it is true that I have not seen MAME, I have certainly seen DOLLY, both on stage and screen. I just don't care for it, that's all. :D
-
Congratulations, DR Ladogerjon! I do believe this is our very first H/K baby.
DR MattH -- love the squirrel story. My sister has a squirrel that knocks on the door when he wants peanuts.
-
Congratulations to ladodgerjon!
-
Jrand53 - Great airports! When my mind is working again, I'll try and add a few.
-
Is it the highlights, DRPANNI?
-
ladodgerjon promises us a photo by tomorrow. And I'll have a wonderful surprise photo this evening that you won't want to miss.
-
Same bat time, same bat channel.
-
DR Lulu is on her way to Chicago!
-
Another lull. I'm off to the opera. Tonight's performance is Gluck's Orfeo ed Eurydice. I've never seen it before and only know the one well-known aria from it ("Che faro senza Eurydice?")
-
Im sure that is not approriate language for a family friendly site Jay.
-
Lull, lull, lull (that is three lulls). What care I about lulls. We're having a high old time lulls or not. And that's the truth.
-
Just wanted to drop by and say hello, congrats to the new father and Happy Chanukah to those who celebrate it.
Danise
-
Jrand53 - That's it! The highlights seeped into my skull and destroyed my brain cells. An airport popped into my head as I was walking my dog:Bill Clinton Airport in Santa Monica. It's beneath me, I know it. (There's an opening if I ever heard one.)
-
Congratulations to the new HHW daddy! And Happy Hanukah to all.
-
Now that the Golden Globe nominations are out and other critic awards have been announced I was wondering if Mr. Mark Bakalor has updated his Oscar picks yet.
-
My goodness, the phone has not stopped ringing tonight, and I have barely gotten a few media things done I had planned. Did not get a chance to crack open WICKED yet, but did get some choice episodes of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW watched. Even in its first (low-rated) season, this show was hilarious. And the comedy hasn't really aged at all. It's still fresh and funny as ever.
[sigh] Invited out to dinner tomorrow night at some friends' house, so I'll have to give WICKED a spin tomorrow. Will give me a chance to read the liner notes.
That squirrel could have caused major damage panicking in such strange surroundings, so I am SO lucky it didn't.
Nice to see that DR Ron arrived safely. Hope everyone else who's doing holiday traveling gets to his destination with no trouble.
-
Congrats to ladodgerjon and family! Happy Hanukah to all who celebrate it!
-
Guess it's time to turn in (turn into what? bk isn't the only one who's on, baby!)
Good night.
-
Now that the Golden Globe nominations are out and other critic awards have been announced I was wondering if Mr. Mark Bakalor has updated his Oscar picks yet.
Usually it takes a while to work out the maths on an abacus.
;D
Uh, more seriously, Master Mark takes a number of considerations into play when working out his judgements, from what I've been told. Nominations and wins for other awards are only a part of his equations. I'm just glad he takes as much pleasure from reaching his conclusions as we take from the conclusions themselves.
-
Der Brucer and I have had a nice nite out. We started by submitting my app for employment at the local Mikasa outlet. He was instantly distracted by some of the sale items, finding some good treasures, while I went next door to the Peppers shop, which specializes in hot sauces, and found a very interesting Ginger/Wasabi sauce. I also found out that they have a warehouse nearby, and got another application to fill out.
We then went to the Purple Parrot, closer to downtown, for happy hour, and got very happy meeting Heather and Dave, both bartenders, and Hugh, one of the owners. We also met Rick and Jeff, two of the locals. We're still unclear on what Rick does for a living, but Jeff coaches international competition level ice skaters. You never can tell who you're going to meet during happy hour!
Right now, I'm listening to Mason Williams' Music CD. It's not a copy of his album of '69 of the same name, but a compliation of tracks from his five albums recorded for WB from '68 to '71. I take it all back, that I don't have any Christmas music with us, because his guitar solo of Greensleeves counts as such.
See, something happens during these lulls! You just have to be patient for us to get back to you, BK!
-
What care I if we hit a new low? I care not, that's what care I? Since we have a new daddy with us, I thought I'd share a wonderful photo of my darling daughter at age twoish.
-
Cute BK. Of course now we have the question "Where has your daughter hidden herself these past few months?".
-
Awwww. She's so cute. We miss her around here.
Maybe I should embarrass DR Sandra and post some of her baby pictures. Hmmm.
-
But then again, she IS the one who will be chosing my nursing home in a few years, so I guess I'd better not.
-
A wise decision DR Laura. I keep the same thought in mind when I celebrate the birthdays of my niece and nephew. Perhaps someone kind shall establish a nursing home for old kimlets - no fees payable of course.
-
The darling daughter is sans computer at the moment. She'll be back, though.
What care I if we hit a new low? What care I if we even hit an old low? I care not. Still and all and also all and still, where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
Good evening!
What a pleasant surprise - notice I remembered the first "r" this time - it was to go to the post office this afternoon on the way to the theatre, and find that it was not that busy at all. I got the package processed and paid for in about seven minutes! I really could not believe that there weren't that many people there. They even had all nine windows open! Plus the "store"! So... BK, you should have the cookies in plenty of time for your Christmas Eve soiree. I just hope they survive the trip. I don't think I've had any of those cookies that "late" - they're usually gone by the day after I make them - if not the day of. You'll have to tell me if the "day olds" still taste good. If all else "fails", they'll be good milk-dunking cookies.
*Now, if other DRs would like cookies... I'll be more than happy to take some requests after the New Year. I'm back up in Fairfax until the show closes, so I don't have immediate access to my KitchenAid, my good cookie sheets (love those Doughmakers products!), my good vanilla (although the latest test in Cook's Illustrated proved that CVS' imitation vanilla actually tastes very good in the finished product), and most importantly, my gas oven (my parents have a gas stovetop, but an electric oven - I definitely prefer gas). -Was that enough parenthetical phrases for you?
But, again, I was amazed that the post office was relatively dead on a Friday afternoon after work the week before Christmas.
*However... After tonight's show, I stopped by the post office again to drop off some mail (bills - ugh!). Well... It was already 11:50pm - they close at midnight, and the line was at least 40 people deep - and more people were still coming through the door! And some people had LOTS o' packages! I wonder time the post office will actually end up closing tonight.
Back to the show... Good show tonight. Our Merlyn was back in tonight - finally over the flu. Unfortunately, our assistant manager was out tonight - at least our stage manager was back. There was one priceless moment during the first act. After "Lusty Month of May," Pellinore makes his entrance with his dog, Horrid, in tow. We have a wonderful dog costume - and a wonderful actor inside that costume. Well, during one sequence, Horrid got into trouble... The show is in the Fichlander - or the Arena - in the round. Around the central playing area is "moat" that leads to down to the pit and elevator area. Well, Horrid misjudged his distance from the edge of the moat, and proceeded to fall in! Anthony - the actor inside - even tried pawing his way back up, but didn't make it... He just kept sliding down. The amount of hysterical laughter at intermission was deafening. Of course, as luck would have it, our director was watching tonight. All she could say was, "That was one hell of an exit!" ;D
OH! And when I got to the theatre tonight, there was a major spread of food in the greenroom. The theatre had their employee party this afternoon, and they brought the leftovers up - and there was lots leftover - even some "fresh" trays of food that hadn't been unwrapped yet. London broil, spiral-sliced honey ham, grilled chicken breasts in pesto, roasted new potatoes, roasted vegetables, guacamole and chips, assorted breads and cheeses, etc... And since I had not had a real lunch nor dinner... YUM! And for dessert there were various cookie trays to choose from, as well as a foot high chocolate Santa to break away at. It was some good eatin'!
Of course, I had baked, so I just kept my cookies in the pit - and shared them with the other musicians. There are plenty left, and I'll put the rest in the greenroom before tomorrow's matinee. *I am not going to the post office tomorrow morning! No way, Jose! I mean No way, me.. I mean.. ;)
Oh, and my Secret Santa gave me cookies and chocolate tonight too!
-And after only two(!) nights of post-show fundraising, we've already raised about $5,200 for BC/EFA and Food & Friends! Thank You Arena Stage Patrons!
Well, it's getting late, and my short sleep last night is catching up with me. And I, for some crazy reason, want to venture out tomorrow morning and hit the mall before the matinee. :o See you there!
-
bk - What a sweet picture! (Your daughter's nice, too.) Cheap, but it's in the spirit of the earlier shtick.
Just came back from the bookstore. doing some late night last minute Hanukah shopping. My sweet daughter - of whom I have some extremely cute photos, but no scanner, is arriving tomorrow.
I finally found a chiropractor in my new neighborhood for my horribly hurtin' back. He or she (name's Robin so it could be either one) managed to squeeze me in Monday late afternoon. After I made the appointment I saw in my book that late Monday afternoon is when I have my appointment to take my CA Driver's Test. Aaargh. All this is excrutiatingly boring, but I'm doing my bit to fill the lull.
-
COOKIES! How lovely and festive it will be. COOKIES!
What care I if we hit new lows or highs when there are COOKIES on their way?
I care not. I shall laugh in the face of a new low. I shall laugh and laugh and when the errant and truant finally reture like little lost lambs I shall laugh and laugh again.
-
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Friends from A...My Name Is Alice is the most moving song ever written.
Lyrics by Georgia Holof; Music by David Metee
Played it hours ago and I'm still broken up about it.
-
The NW family members have yet to join us. Fagin may still be out there with the urchins in the street. Anotehr half dozen posts and will not have reached an all time low at all. It is only the cattle that should be a lowin' not kimlets.
-
I went to Trader Joe's to buy cheese and it was closed! At 10 o'clock. Have they no decency? It's just the start of the cheese evening. Gelson's (a rather upscale market, for the non-Angelinos) WAS open and I pranced up and down the aisles, singing "Cheese! Glorious cheese!" And then they threw me out. (That's not true. What IS true is that I left my car keys on the checkout counter and emptied my purse looking for them until I figured out what I'd done.) ...Am I doing my lull filling?
-
Note to DR Jose: My DH is a postal worker, and he hasn't had a day off in about two weeks. It looks like he will get Christmas Day off this year, though.
-
Yes, I feel confident that we won't hit a new low tonight, but given the turnout this entire week I don't hold much hope for the weekend. But, and it's a big BUTT - what care I?
-
The cattle a mooin' does not really have the same Christmas feeling at all. Perhaps cattle have a special seasonal voice.
-
bk - I just took another look at your daughter. She looked very much like you. Does she still?
-
Hey - I'm a Full Member. Break out the cheese chunks (Swiss only, please)!
-
Perhaps the magic word was "Lowin" for low and behold Fagin is on the board. How low can you go?(a Chubby Checker reference NOT a Fats Domino reference)
-
Congratulations new Full Member Panni. No doubt you will notice the amount of respect will increase somewhat.
-
We won't be posting until next week, as we leave in the morning for our lovely annual whirlwind trip.
-
A brand new CD just arrived from Australia! ;D TEDDY & ALICE with Len Cariou from DR Tomovoz! ;D Thanks! :-* I can't wait to listen to it.
-
Wait a minute...I forgot. I got the CD from HHW GOD Tomovoz!
-
DR Panni - Do you like Liptauer?
-
I was just about to smite you George.
I have just been copying (for a friend) the complete recording (in Spanish) of Martin Guerre. Friend Bianca saw the show (in its first form) in London and enjoyed it. Biance is multilingual so will no doubt enjoy the translations. I notice that both the lull and the low have been broken!
-
Thank you, Tomovoz. Being called "Full Member Panni" somehow makes me I feel like Jane Russell. I'd actually like to change my name on this here site, but it would be confusing to the other DR's. "Panni" makes me feel about 7 years old - 'cause that's what I was called as a child in Hungary. When I first posted here, I didn't think it was something I'd keep doing, so it didn't matter. But now it's really really strange having "Panni" pop up on my English-speaking adult life.
-
DR Laura & Family. Have a safe whirlwind.
-
Yes, JoseSPiano, I like Liptauer. Haven't had it in ages, though.
-
Hmmm... I'm not sure I could ship Liptauer... ??? I'll have to investigate.
-
Perhaps the magic word was "Lowin" for low and behold Fagin is on the board. How low can you go?(a Chubby Checker reference NOT a Fats Domino reference)
I thought that wasa Big Bopper reference.
-
That's sweet! I could make it, so you don't have to ship it. It would stink up the Post Office and the Feds would come after you.
-
All this talk of food is making me hungry. But I really shouldn't eat so late.
-
Thank you, Tomovoz. Being called "Full Member Panni" somehow makes me I feel like Jane Russell. I'd actually like to change my name on this here site, but it would be confusing to the other DR's. "Panni" makes me feel about 7 years old - 'cause that's what I was called as a child in Hungary. When I first posted here, I didn't think it was something I'd keep doing, so it didn't matter. But now it's really really strange having "Panni" pop up on my English-speaking adult life.
Dear Hainsie/Kimlet-Soon-To-Be-Formerly-Known-As-Panni, you could start by changing your screen name to a transitional name, such as "Anna (formerly known as Panni)" then after a bit of time, drop the "(formerly known as Panni)" part. How's that for a solution? That way the change isn't cold turkey.
-
Now there is record everyone should have in their collection: the Big Bopper's "Purple People Eater Meets The Witch Doctor". (also recorded by Joe South). just a reminder that this site is so often educational and full of MUST KNOW facts.
-
Good idea, DR George. I'll probably wait until the New Year and make the grand transition then.
-
It might be time to go back to "Panni". I now prefer the familiar/diminutive "Tommy" when it is used by special people. I have avoided it for years and have been Thomas for the last few decades.
-
I could call myself "The Artist Formerly Known as Panni"....
-
Yes, JoseSPiano, I like Liptauer. Haven't had it in ages, though.
I'm not sure what that is. But my doctor will tell you my body likes Lipitor.
-
I can't write much tonight...I'm absolutely exhausted. I left my apartment to go to the Met at 9:00 this morning and I got home about half an hour ago (1:30) and I'm about to collapse.
Today during the dress rehearsal of THE MERRY WIDOW, Ms. Barbara Cook had an opportunity to run though her New Year's Eve set...it was very exciting to get to hear her do "Losing My Mind" and "On a Clear Day" and the other two numbers, but this is supposed to be a New Year's celebration and she's singing all torch songs and ballads! She was wonderful, but very anti-climatic.
Then there was LA JUIVE (the final performance for this season) and the firing. Yes, I said the firing. Not mine, of course--that would be unseemly--but the firing of a very unseemly crazy woman who worked in the coat check. My friend and I were present for the firing, and it was quite an uncomfortable moment, I will tell you. As the woman was walking out, my boss simply said to her, "You understand what I told you upstairs? Tonight is your last night at the Metropolitan Opera." She had a blank stare on her face and just said, "You're a piece of work...Besides, I've already spoken to the House Manager." We'll see what happens...she has a history of suing those who have fired her.
Anywho, I'm off to bed now. I have to work another double tomorrow, but I'll post tomorrow evening.
'NIGHT!
-
Tomovoz, you wouldn't believe how many names I've had! My mother remarried a year after my father died. So at age 6 I suddenly had to take a different last name - even though he never actually adopted me. Had no choice in the matter. Then when we came to Canada, I was suddenly "Anna" - a name I had not heard spoken my entire life. Then, after my stepfather died, I went back to my original surname, which had been my legal name, anyway all along. Then, when I started acting professionally, I tried all sorts of different names. AND my middle name is another matter. I never use it, but it exists ("Maria") Anna Maria. A nice name for a Jewish girl!
-
I have to write it. How do you solve a problem like it? (Maria)
-
Of course you had to write it, Tomovoz!
-
And you didn't have to "Modify" to add Maria. We all knew, I'm sure.
-
I forgot to mention that all the surnames in our family are "Hungarianized" versions of more Jewish-sounding names (I don't even know most of them.) So it's all a house of cards, m'dears. Nothing is real. It's all an illusion. Just call me Hortense or Ludmilla or Gerturde... Same difference. (Although "Gerturde" is an interesting name - I meant Gertrude.)
-
I started the cleanup of the home environment this evening. My house is always neat but whilst writing each Kritzer Book at my kitchen table, the surrounding walls and floor became inundated with various and sundried stacks of papers and magazines and books. I have now boxed them all up and will take them to storage tomorrow and then the kitchen will once again be tidy as a titmouse.
-
And blow me over with a vacuum cleaner if we didn't have a posting frenzy whilst I was boxing and tossing, not necessarily in that order.
-
So now that you've boxed and tossed, bk, I'll repeat my earlier question: Does your darling daughter who very much resembled her daddy at age two, still resemble you?
-
I didn't think anyone would notice the modification Panni! There had been a post beween (now removed) so the reference was not at that time sequential.
-
Well... Now I'm going to bed.. I'm going to need my rest if I'm going to fight over the last TV on sale at Hecht's tomorrow!... And I have my coupons too!
*Actually, if I buy anything at Hecht's it will be a cake pan - probably the fleur-de-lys or star-bundt pans - and with the coupons! ;) And there this very nice shirt I've been drooling over at Talbot's - I think it may turn out to be my Christmas present to myself this year. Even before it will undoubtedly get marked down.
Until then... whenever then turns out to be...
Goodnight.
-
Good-night, all. It's been fun cyber-chatting.
-
Good night all. (and sundried of course)
-
The darling daughter still looks like that photo so if you think she looks like me then yes.
-
I just watched the end of "For Me and My Gal" with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly on PBS. I'd never seen it before (and I was only able to see the last 45 minutes of it) but I loved what I did see.
It's about 11:50 pm now on the left coast and I must sleep. I have to get up at 6:00 am and need what little sleep I can get. So, goodnight all!
