Title: HELLO, I MUST BE GOING
Post by: bk on October 07, 2006, 01:16:49 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes came and went, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're all doing their Groucho imitations and singing Hooray For Captain Spaulding.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Wicked, Cil and J.

I hope you enjoy Grey Gardens. I hear they have tinkered with the show since I saw it but not so much that it's completely changed. I will probably see it some time in November.

Poltroon...

I bought something from a guy on ebay who specialized in printing. He's helped recommend fonts for my project from time to time, and helped me find out signature "commie font". His company is http://www.poltroonpress.com/

DR Jose, I was telling my husband about your job on the ship, and he said that Ray Evans and Johnny Mercer used to play cruises, in fact that's how they met. It was in some far away locale but they were both there while playing the cruise. (Maybe a slightly different style of cruise, but still...) They loved the cruises!

Saturday morning greetings!  How many days does DR Jose's workday begin 2 hours before mine ;) ?  The conference went well yesterday - it's always more beneficial for me for the "face time" than for the new information.  Today there's more on the agenda for my current needs.  I'll be there soon, DR Ben!

We totally crashed last night, but feel much better today.  Off to breakfast, then DH Richard will walk me to my bus.

Bye for now!

Well.....Marx Bros....

DUCK SOUP near the end when they are trapped in house and being bombarded, Groucho gets on the radio with this message:

"Send help.  We're trapped.  There's three men and one woman.  If you can't send help, send two more women."

And so many responses on his television show:

Contestant:  I have 17 children.

Groucho:  17! My oh my.

Contestant: Yes, I love my husband.

Groucho:  I love my cigar, too, but I take it out of my mouth now and then.

I had a wonderful time on Thursday with Ginny and her DH Richard, Cillaliz, JHVW and our wonderful tour guide Jose.

We met at the Time Warner Center and wandered over to Sarabeth for brunch

OH!

Pumpkin waffle with honey, sourcream, pumkin seeds, raisins and strawberries.    HEAVEN!!!!  Cillializ and I couln't decide between the chicken and apple sausage and the porka nd apricot sausage so we each ordered one and shared.  MMMMMMMMMMMMM

The weather was perfect for walking and what fun we had.  MBarnum kindly called us up and we had a chance for a quick chat.

We missed having the rest of last year's group with us....

Danise I kept thinking about our day at Central Park and the Zoo!  I hope you can come up again soon and we can visit again.  All the best to you and your mom.

So, I'm MIRED, I tell yiz, MIRED!! In my course work for that BA at CSU-LA: On Tuesday, I have 3-count'em-3 tests, a paper due Monday, and a speech due Thursday -- and this weekend I'm at the Other School, in my first marathon weekend for that Masters degree... last night from 6 to 11, then back again this morning at 9 until 11 tonight, then back at 9 tomorrow - yes, Sunday, until 7...
Fortunately, this masters thing happens only ONE weekend each month... Ah, la vita studentesca!!!

Since you mentioned Julius (Groucho) Marx, I thought I'd remind BK and all DRs that this coming Thursday (10/12 - the real Columbus Day before the government decided to make most holidays part of long weekends) TCM is televising Dick Cavett interviews Groucho as part of their series of classic Cavett interviews (also out on DVD).  It's at 8 & repeated at 11 Eastern, but check for your local time.

Well, BK, you stole one of my favourite Groucho lines in your notes.  I'm also fond of:  "Do I understand this?  Why a four-year-old child could understand this.  Run out and get me a four-year-old child, I can't make head nor tale of this!"  "I once shot an elephant in my pyjamas, how he got in my pyjamas, I'll never know."

I adore the MArx Brothers so much that my brain reels trying to choose anything to quote since they're always SO much better coming from the men themselves.

Reading these other lines makes me want to put in one of their films today, and I may do that at lunchtime. But choosing which one, that's a REAL problem.

HORSE FEATHERS has always been my favorite, but I may choose one of the later MGM ones today. Perhaps THE BIG STORE since I don't think I ever got around to watching it once I got the MGM/Marx set.

Post by: elmore3003 on October 07, 2006, 09:31:49 AM
Good morning, all!  I slept quite late, and there's some godawful event - maybe a streetfair? - happening on Amterdam Avenue with a lot of noisy sound systems, speaking in Spanish, and not too long ago a lady singing "The Star Spangled Banner" in, yep!, Spanish.  This can't be Columbus Day since that's an Italian-themed event.  Anyway, who can sleep during all that racket in Spanish, Italian, English, or any other language?

Last night I watched the greatest documentary, BALLETS RUSSES:  a history, with wonderful interviews with surviving dancers of the two feuding Ballets Russes companies founded in the early 1930s as one company, and footage from performances between 1933 and the late 1950s when both fnally fell apart.    I kept thinking of "Who's That Woman?" the great moment in FOLLIES when the old and new worlds collide as I watched clips of 13year-old Irina Baranova dancing in "The Good-Humored Ladies" followed by her interview in 2000, or 90 year-old Frederic Franklin dancing in "Gaite Parisienne" in the 1940s and teaching a class in 2000.  Franklin is the host of the documentary, and his recall is amazing; he should do a bio - he's now around 94 - before it's all lost.  He talks about the commissioning of RODEO and Agnes de Mille, Marc Platt still looks great, and there are clips from one of his films as well as footage of him in several ballets.  Dame Alicia Markova looks wonderful, and they caught her just before she died since several of the interviewees have passed on before the film's completion.  It's quite a wonderful fim, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

I have a bit of brain surgery today and a paying job as well, so I must get to work.

DR MBarnum, 83 year-old George Zoritch, now living in Tucson, had several of the ballerinas a-twitter over how hot he was, and since I'll pander myself to lead anyone to the arts, I thought I would post a few of his photos - he dances in a few films as well - to induce you to watch the DVD.

Searching for those photos of George Zoritch, I learned he had written a memoir.  It's OP and the cheapest used copy is $1600!  I guess I'll try the NYPL Dance Collection.

Raven Wilkinson, the first black dancer in the Ballets Russes, is interviewed and her story of the company's clashes with the KKK in the South over her dancing, with some frightening footage of a lot of asses in white robes, is quite tragic.  There are two Native American ballerinas interviewed, including the beautiful Maria Tallchief.  I'm debating watching this again today.

And I noticed that the DVR was picking up BEYOND THE SEA. I have never seen this Bobby Darin biography though I've read so many negative comments about it, I will have to see for myself as to its quality (or lack thereof).

I don't why it took TWO years to come to paycable (or at least to a paycable channel that I get.)

I had some households chores to do this morning, and I put on the original cast CD of GUYS & DOLLS in honor of Tony-winner Isabel Bigley who died earlier this week.

I hadb't listened to this version in a long time, so it was nice to hear it again.

Geez, I thought I was relaxing today and I haven't stopped going and doing since nine o'clock this morning.  I had to Xerox all the lead sheets from The Brain, then separate them into packets for the cast on Monday - that took a surprising amount of time - plus I delivered books to the store where I'm doing my signing, and just all sorts of other little things.

MattH, I would have given BEYOND THE SEA a 10 if it hadn't been for the constant barrage of foul language which really irritated me because it seemed so unnecessary...sort of like this is a musical bio pic that won't appeal to the masses cause it is too old fashioned so we had better throw in lots and lots of bad words (since we can't have any cars blowing up) so that the guys will stay tuned.

However, the musical numbers are fantastic and I thought Kevin Spacey, while a bit long in the tooth for the role, was still very good and is one heck of a singer (I did buy the CD soundtrack), and the sets and costumes were perfection.

Veteran Actor Collapses Onstage, Dies
Oct 06 4:45 PM US/Eastern

Twenty minutes into the performance of "The Best Man" at a Chicago theater, veteran stage actor Gene Janson, onstage with fellow performer David Darlow, unexpectedly put his head in his hands.

When Darlow asked Janson if he was OK, "He replied that he was not," said James Bohnen, artistic director of the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, which is producing the play.

Darlow rushed off the stage to get help, and a nurse in the matinee audience came to Janson's aid. Janson, 72, was taken Wednesday to Lincoln Park Hospital, where he died shortly after of a heart attack, said his son, Christopher Janson.

"There is a certain poetic irony to his death," Christopher Janson said. "He died doing what he loved, which was being on the stage and in a play he was so proud of."

In the Gore Vidal drama, Janson portrayed a fictional former U.S. president who dies unexpectedly. Bohnen said the role was one of Janson's finest in a 50-year career.

"He brought so much to his character," Bohnen said. "He was having the time of his life with this part."
Janson worked mainly on the stage, although his film credits included "The Blues Brothers," "While You Were Sleeping," and "My Best Friend's Wedding." He also appeared in TV shows and commercials.

I believe some critter has died within the walls of my house. (Rat or Squirrel or chipmonk size, I suspect). Short of cutting into my wall (with some uncertainty to exactly where said critter has expired), anyone know any way to minimize or eliminate the odor of decaying flesh that's now beginning to pervade the specific area?  Any measures that can be taken at all, I know the larvae and the flies will probably come next. Any suggestions will be helpful on how to deal with this and contain or eradicate the problem with hundreds of dollars of damage to my house will be greatly appreciated..

I had the same problem, Pogue, in my other house.  In fact, I'm sure I wrote about it at length, including what I did about it.  I know it got so bad that I did have people come out and they banged up some walls pretty good and didn't find it.  It was a ratski and was found ultimately somewhere in the bathroom in a vent.  I know the exterminator brought something that helped with the smell, so you might want to give one a call - it was some powerful thing.  Maybe someone could do  a search in the notes and find what it was.

We're back from 68th St., where we had a lovely dinner at our friends' home.  While we were having cosmopolitans and munchies before dinner we watched the full moon rise between the towers of the SanRemo apartment building on Central Park West.  Dinner was pork tenderloin in bourbon sauce, greenbeans with grilled onions, mashed sweet potatoes, and homemade apple pie.  Doug said, "We never cook," but this was clearly a contradiction of that statement!

Tomorrow, it's choral eucharist at St. Thomas, a nice lunch, and our trip home.  DH Richard is packing right now and I must go do the same.

Travel vibes for DRs Cillaliz and jhvw!

Had an interesting evening of viewing. I began with WALK THE LINE. I went ahead and watched the DVR recording I had made in HD.

I liked the film, but I have to say I think they overdid it a bit with the music. Maybe I wouldn't have felt that way if he had been singing Broadway show music instead of his country rock, but there you are.

Both performers very engaging; you felt for their problems and wanted them to work them out. On the other hand, it was very similar to so many other show biz biographies where great success fools people into thinking they're invincible. So, even not knowing much at all about Johnny Cash's life, it did feel overly familiar.

Good, not great.

Next I put in DANTE'S COVE. This is a miniseries on the Here! network (not carried on my Bible Belt cable service).

Part gay DARK SHADOWS and part gay MELROSE PLACE, it's also got some semi-softcore porn elements and pretty atrocious dialog. Still, I'm sure viewers on the Here! network are watching it not for detailed plot or meaningful conversation but to see those beautiful bodies in motion. And the men are all glorious to look at both in and out of clothes. There are lesbians included in the mix, and they're very attractive, too.

The package contained the first two lengthy installments of the show (each movie length). I only watched the first disc tonight, and there's a documentary on the making of the show which I cued up to play tomorrow.

I am currently watching my Bollywood movie of the weekend TOOFANI TARZAN (1937) starring John Cawas, Nazira, and Ahmed Dilawar.

It is a grey marked DVD so I don't have any artwork of DVD cover to show, but it is a  find rendition of the Tarzan story as a professer and his very attractive adopted daughter search for the man's lost grandson in the jungle...of course the lost grandson has grown up to be Tarzan!

Well, if we don't get a frenzy or three we can all hang our heads in skammen.

I just got back from travelling all over north Georgia picking up items for Greg's shoot in Virginia next week. Now I'm back to editing...trying to get a jump on the upcoming projects next week for Disney, Hallmark, the Mercer doc, and onlining the Sacco and Vanzetti trailer to put on our DVD of The Internationale when it's released next month.

This is by way of explaining how torturous it is to have to do all this stuff, and finish my taxes, when what I REALLY want to do is read the book!!!

But I did get to listen to "New Guy in Town" and I absolutely love it!! Lots of songs I've never heard, and some I love, like the one from "The Court Jester", and appropriately, a Johnny Mercer song! (Guess this means I can even call this a write-off!)

Guy Haines is such a wonderful singer---unpretentuous but sings with great feeling---the whole CD made me happy. And the cherry on top is that lovely Grant Geissman solo. I know I'll be listening to this on my drives in to work to put me in a good mood to face the day.

Hoo and ray, bk!

This 1937 Bollywood Tarzan is much spicier then later Bollywood Tarzan movies! India must have later started a production code like America did. The movie is very much in the romantic vain as the first Weismueller (sp) Tarzan film was.

...Next, I spray the area with Bac-Azap, which is an excellent deodorizer and decontaminant in the case of dead animals. You can't just spray this stuff in the air to get rid of the smell, but once you remove the animal, you can spray the area to neutralize the stinky residual odor and juices left behind.

You can't get rid of a squirrel in the wall with any product, it must be done manually. There's a slight chance it may be accessible from the attic, but a wall is usually 8 feet down, with limited space, and oftentimes structural beams block access. In most cases, I must cut a hole to remove the animal.
