Title: TEASE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a tease, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're teasing some chickens right now.

To continue from the end of last night:  I had a bite of Ann's humongous chocolate cake and it was good...not great, but good...and HUGE!!.  Only the top layer (of the FOUR, not five) was consumed.  The other three layers were taken home to be enjoyed by Ann and Jed over the next several days...or maybe weeks. ;) Here's what the take-home cake looked like:

And finally, the last picture that I took last night.  I'm sorry that it's blurry.  There was very little light and my camera is really a phone:

Awwww...pretty pictures, der Brucer!

We actually didn't see very many pretty colors yet...leaf season has barely started in Jasper. We had to go up to deer hunting land to find "Frog Togs", which as supposed to be the best lightweight, water-repellant outer garments on the market.

This meant that we had to go to a huge, very high end store predominately devoted to deer hunters and the accessories they require. It was full of people with tattoos, more tattoos than teeth in some cases. (Most of the tattoos were spelled correctly.)

It usually takes Greg a long time to decide what he's going to purchase so I had ample time to explore the store. I'm not sure what was the most disturbing: fake wooden rifles that the kids can carry around so they can be like daddy, or the dresses for little girls made out of camoflage material but then adorned with lace! With a matching hat that says "Daddy's Little Hunter"! If my daddy dressed me up in that crap, you can be sure I'd be hunting him down, and not with a wooden gun. Oh yes. And what if your little tyke gets lost in the woods? What then, eh? Not so cute anymore!

Uhhhh...are there any hunters in this group? Sorry if I'm offending anyone...

But the other thing that actually made me feel ill is the length (and expense!) that these people will go to to hunt deer. All these high-tech tree stands and clothing covered with a leaf-life material and a garnish that you could wrap around yourself to look even MORE like a tree, an evil, gun-wielding tree that is, plus the bags of deer chow and other attractants you can use to lure the deer into a false sense of security (or maybe even a garter belt!) and well, it seemed like the deer don't stand a chance! It was very depressing.

As an antidote to all this imagined carnage, I cracked open the new book and read the very cheerful first story, since my regular bedtime companion (I just typed that as "compainion"!) would be up until dawn prepping for his shoot.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it didn't make me have wonderful dreams. I mostly dreamed of cats wrestling around on top of me. Or wait...maybe it wasn't a dream! Now I'm up and will find out "How to Write a Dirty Book" (Chpater 2!).

Good morning, all!  I have a day filled with brain surgery and Victor Herbert, a quite eclectic mix.

I had a lovely and liesurely dinner with DRs Cillaliz and jhvw, who head west today, as do DR Ginny and DH Richard.  I have one Netflix DVD here, JEEVES AND WOOSTER, Season 2, and I believe that when I return later, I shall watch it.

I'm off to Toyland.

Der Brucer and I do not hunt.  His son-in-law does, however.  SIL doesn't go to all the extremes that you list, DR Edisaurus, but he does enjoy bagging a deer every year.  The problem is, he doesn't have the slightest idea what he should do with the carcass, being one of those people whose diet doesn't range much further than McBurgers.

So, every year, der Brucer and I get to restock our freezer with venison, which we enjoy a great deal.

It raises the SIL out of the good-for-nothing category, at least.

Wait! elmo, don't go!!!

I'm up early, to leave here at 7:30 for the last marathon day of the first marathon weekend of this masters program. It's grueling - but I'm having a wonderful ttime.

During yesterday's lunch break, I sped back to the apartment to do my Anthropology exam, an open-book test, due on Tuesday. Today, I'll bring my books with me, to avoid wasting any time I might otherwise spend driving back and forth - I'll do my Logic exam (another open-book deal...) and study for the Tuesday Comm test, and start my French song Lit paper, due tomorrow, and prepare my speech, due Thursday, and study for the Wednesday Phonetics exam. Oy. What was I thinking???

Sunday morning greetings!  Alas, it's our last day in NYC.  Richard and I are all packed; soon we'll check our luggage here at the hotel, go to choral Eucharist at St. Thomas, have lunch at (I hope) La Bonne Soupe, make a last minute stop at the Hershey Store, and head for the airport no later than 3pm.  It's been a glorious week and I don't want to go back to Ohio.

DR George, thanks for all the photos from the get-together last night!

Really have a dilemma to face with viewing choices. It's rainy, so that's put me in a mood for something serious rather than a mindless adventure like SAHARA.

I do plan to watch the documentary on the DANTE'S PEAK DVD and then watch the second disc episode, but apart from that, I'm going to select something off the shelf I've already seen and want to see again.

Speaking of RANCHO NOTORIOUS that bk mentioned yesterday, Fritz Lang disliked working with Marlene Dietrich (she may have loathed him, too; I can't remember). He tried and tried to get her to play a character as an over-the-hill saloon girl, and he said all she was interested in was looking beautiful, more beautiful in each set-up instead of the way she should have looked appropriate to the scene and character. He said she always dropped Von Sternberg's name saying he would have done it a certain way, so they did not get along.

Good morning all!

Thanks for posting the pictures, George.  That cake was indeed horrifyingly huge.  I've never seen such a thing in my life.  Jed and I managed the first layer, but that was it.
DR TCB and I spent a wonderful afternoon with our Australian brethren, strolling around parts of Seattle, and chatting in my somewhat tidy living room.  They are such delightful people, and I am so glad we got the chance to meet them.  At six, when DR George and Jed showed up, we headed off to find dinner, running into some difficulty because it was apparently homecoming in Tacoma, meaning half the teenage population was out in fancy dresses eating dinner.  Ah well.  We found our very yummy Italian food and my gargantuan cake and all was well.

Good Afternoon!

The Carribean Princess is currently moored off of Princess Cays - a.k.a. Princess Cruise Line's own island.  I went over this morning for a couple of hours of sun, food and walking in the water.  Very nice.  -And, it's definitely still summer down here!  I think they said it was around 92.  However, the water is very cool, and just so, so blue.  Very beautiful.  We're at see all day tomorrow on our way to Ocho Rios.

I'm just taking a break right now in the Atrium - which is the only place on the ship with wireless.  And I just wanted to pop in and say, "Hi!".  -I'm gonna try to load each page of posts, and then read them off-line since they charge for the computer time.  -Thankfully, it's not too bad a fee, but it's still a fee, so...

Hope everyone is doing well.

In (some) defense of hunters:

If we are to eat meat, then killing animals is the price.

If venison is to be reasonably edible, the deer must be killed swiftly - a wounded animal runs through the forest with its glands spewing out all sorts of nasty enzymes which taint the meat - thus a "good shot" and a quick kill is best for hunter and hunted alike.

Whether we hunt the deer wearing homespun clothes armed with a bow and arrow, or use a high powered sniper scope from a low flying plane, from the deer's point of view, it's all the same. The bow-and-arrow hunters who claim they are giving their prey a fair chance present a most fatuous argument. If you want to give them a "fair chance" then stay at home and watch football on TV.

Many hunters will tell you the part they enjoy most about their hunting trips is the whole "getting down with nature" business (me, I'd "get down" with a camera, not a gun.)

If I were to pass an ethical judgment on a hunter, I would ask her to rank the following in order of appreciation: the treks through the woods, the kill, the "dressing", and the dining. Those who place "the killing" high on the list have a problem.

From an ecological point of view, in many areas of the country (including here in Southern Delaware) the white tail deer have become an endemic pest - destroying both natural habitat and agriculture. The herds have become much larger than the land can sustain, and lots of deaths from starvation over the winter are to be expected. For the good of both man and beast, the herds must be thinned out - we either encourage the hunters or let contracts for private enterprise to harvest set quantities. Those who espouse "nature's way" would need to restock the woodlands with the deer's natural enemies: wild cats, wolves, and bears, to restore nature's balance.

And surely, little Betty Sue in camouflage is no more distressing than JonBenet Ramsey in her Slutty Sue   Fetching Franny Little Miss Molest Me outfits.

I wonder what would happen if you required all kids who wanted hunting licences to first show thay could kill and butcher a hog?

On a personal note, I am much less concerned with my son-in-law taking the lads out deer/goose hunting than I am with my daughter who thought having the guests (ages 5-11) shoot BB guns at a target as a birthday party activity was a good idea!

Hunting for game was a regular (and necessary) activity for our rural ancestors, so I guess for our sons to hunt and our girls to knit is in the finest of tradition.

Like so much in life, the issue around "hunting" (and guns in general) should be "responsibilty". The Columbine kids were not Ted Nugents in training!

End of counter-rant.

Safe Travel Vibes to all the travelers.

Air travel these days can be challenging (the polite way of putting it). Got a call from DD Friday night – not the kind of call a mother likes to get. She was on her way from Denver to Aspen – for business and a high school friend’s wedding. As she’s on the road for three weeks, she has quite a bit of luggage. Her UA flight to Aspen was delayed for hours. On again, off again. Finally the passengers were told that they could no longer fly into the Aspen airport – closed for the night. After this happy announcement, it took TWO HOURS to get their bags off the plane.
This was all backstory that DD told me on the phone from her rental car as she headed for the four-hour nighttime, partly curvy mountain road drive to Aspen! I suggested – strongly – that she book into an airport hotel and wait until early morning to set out. But when DD makes up her mind, that’s it. Luckily she hasn’t inherited her mother’s night vision (or lack of same). Needless to say I spent a very uneasy night waiting for her to call and say she’d arrived safely. …Which she eventually did. Only one funny adventure on the way.

As I said – Travel Safely, DRs!

BARCELONA, Spain (Oct. 7) -

Albert Rivera's nude body is everywhere to be seen - just what he wants as he runs for president of Catalonia. Rivera has filled the streets of Barcelona and other Catalan cities with thousands of posters of him in the buff, modestly shielding himself with his hands.

Beside Rivera's picture, the poster reads: "We don't care where you were born. We don't care which language you speak. We don't care what kind of clothes you wear. We care about you."

Imagine the turnover in Congress if every candidate had to campaign au natural ::)

If we are to eat meat, then killing animals is the price.

I stand corrected! Killing animals is GOOD! :-) Still, I do think it is wrong to bait deer. Fight fair!

We also have an overpopulation of deer and many of them are very tame. At the state parks in North Georgia, they are so tame they walk up to your car and you can feed them by hand. Or shoot them in the head. I guess I have never been to an animal murderer's warehouse and had no idea how it has risen to almost a fetish-like environment. And the stuff is SO overpriced! We were looking for walkie talkies that had an 18 mile range. The camoflage ones at the Bargain Barn were @150, but the non-camo ones, same walkies, were under $100 at Best Buys.

But I still think that dressing your toddler up in camoflage, which makes it easier to lose them in the woods, not to mention possibly getting shot by Dick Cheney or whomever, seems to be a bad idea...

I watched the documentary on the first DANTE'S COVE disc. I'm glad I watched the first episode before I watched this feature because they basically told the entire story of the first 90 minute episode complete with clips, etc.

I'm assuming this was done as a featurette for the Here! network, but they gave their entire show away with this information. Anyway, it was nice to see some behind-the-scenes glimpses of the filming, and some of the actors who are playing gay and who are actually out in real life was nice to know, too, since it seems these days, these roles go to straight actors who can be "brave" to play a gay role.

Then I watched the second episode, this one about 110 minutes. Very easy to get involved with the characters and their relationships, but the writing continues to be the weak link of the production. The plotting is really rudimentary.

But the gorgeous men do kind of make up for it, at least partly.

Next came ON DANGEROUS GROUND. I had never seen this, so I had no idea what to expect.

It began as a kind of DETECTIVE STORY slice-of-police-life. Then it segued into a manhunt for an escaped killer, and finally turned melodrama when Ida Lupino entered the film as a blind woman with information about the killer.

Robert Ryan, Ed Begley, and Ward Bond were the name stars of the film, and they're all just fine, but I can't say that I particuarly loved the picture.

Nice Warners transfer with just a few spots late in the picture with print damage.

So, to lighten the mood, I put in THE PIRATE. Instead of the laserdisc, I put in the DVD-R I burned from a TCM broadcast. It's certainly sharp as a tack (much sharper than the laserdisc), but the color just isn't the deeply rich Technicolor that the laserdisc has.

Thinking of George:

 Sympathy for the cannibals (http://www.presstelegram.com/entertainment/ci_4453083)
Quote
By Nathan Lee, New York Times

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING

HOW MANY chainsaw massacres can one state possibly contain? One more, at least, from the look of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning," a prequel to a remake of the 1974 film that spawned numerous sequels and numberless copycats.

There's more to come, no doubt, given the bloodlust for torture and indifference to depravity characteristic of contemporary horror films. Every era gets the scare pictures it deserves, and there is nothing more unsettling in this orgy of hate than its overwhelming stench of corporate nihilism.

Written by Sheldon Turner and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, "The Beginning" mindlessly repeats the archetypal "Chainsaw" scenario. Four hotties (Taylor Handley, Matt Bomer, Jordana Brewster, Diora Baird) venture into backwoods Texas and are set upon by a clan of psychopathic cannibal hillbillies.

The sick twist is that while the youngsters ostensibly function as an audience surrogate (who wouldn't want to be that sexy and avoid being disemboweled?), the movie's real sympathies lie with that clan, the Hewitts. The film delights in exploring their iconography. Where did Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski) get his flesh mask, and how did he come to select his signature power tool? What's the back story of Officer Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey), and why does he eat people?

The answers are beside the point. The movie exists to brutalize. Where, in "The Passion of the Christ," Mel Gibson tried to turn atrocity into spiritual catharsis, the producers of "The Beginning" merely package it, sell it to the masses and hope they don't vomit in their nachos.

Bon appitite visionnement

This is a feature that Greg is working on. 95% of it is being shot outside---the 5% being a cover set of a ranger's office. The film concerns teenagers and a grizzly bear, which could make for some grisly situations! Nothing too serious...I think it will be rated PG.

Greetings from O'Hare International Airport....when I got to my gate, they said they needed 9 volunteers. The first 3 would get on the next flight (8:30 PM) otherwise, those who were bumped off the flight would have to spend the night and leave tomorrow.   Well, I have tomorrow off, so I'm not in that big a hurry. I volunteered.  This time I got a dinner voucher and a $250 travel voucher on American Airlines....sorry jhvw, this one isn't transferrable, but I only have to hang out here a couple more hours and that was worth the travel money to me

DR ELMORE - there are a LOT of stories about HP.....the board has been in HOT HOT HOT water for over a month over some nefarious telephone business - the board leader was fired last week and now may go to jail in the mess.  She says the men did it, it's because she's a woman (same story that bee-yatch Fiore used when she had her A$$ canned from HP last year....do a search on HP Board and telephone and ALL the news will come up, I bet.

I really don't mind getting bumped on the way home.  I figure if I volunteer when I have time, then maybe someone else will volunteer when I don't and I won't involuntarily get bumped. This is the third time I've done it, the second since July!

Both of my aunts (my dad's sisters) always volunteer to get bumped.  They love getting the offers whenever they can. ;D

BUT ......... the fabulous news is that my copy of the lovelier than lovely new book by your lovely self arrived.  Huzzah and Hooray !!

It will provide me with the fun of a story a night, as I get ready to go to sleep.  So you see, it has finally happened;  I will be curled up with you for 30 minutes or so in our bed each evening.

Larry, while Mr. Packard may be ignoring your e-mails and that ignoring may be related to the troubles at HP, the Packard Humanities Institute and HP are two separate entities. The PHI is not funded or supported by HP. HP is a for-profit corporation. PHI is an independent, tax-exepmt foundation. Granted, some of the money to establish the Institute came from the pockets of the Packards but it will not cease operations if HP begins to tank. Toyland should live to see another day.

Taken from the PHI Web site:

The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI) is a non-profit foundation dedicated to archaeology, music, film preservation, historic conservation, and early education. PHI is located in Los Altos, California.

PHI is independent of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and is not associated in any way with any Hewlett-Packard Company foundations.

Go here

Foundation Center (http://foundationcenter.org/)

and use Foundation Finder and search for Packard Humanities Institute. You should be able to find information about the Foundation (though you may know something about it already).

was the best it's been thus far this season with really interesting stories involving so many of the characters. Still can't stand Nora, even if she did give Lynette a helpful tip about her hubby. She is just so annoying that she ruins the show the SECOND she appears on the scene.

BK, you wrote: "For someone who considers himself a major director, Mr. Hyams filmography is mostly loaded with really bad movies".

I worked as an editor on a movie directed by his sister, Nessa. Her directing style involved lots of master scenes. To quote her: "If I give you coverage, you're only going to use it!" As a result, we lacked the ability to perk up any of these scenes, which probably seemed funny in person but were deadly on screen. It was one of the worst films I've ever worked on, so perhaps this is a genetic condition!

Speaking of bad films ala Mr. Hyams' Peeper, I just watched the second of the three Michael Caine films being put out by Fox in a few weeks - Deadfall.  I know you all can't wait for my thoughts - I will only say that the third film is The Magus - our very own Nick Redman told me this anecdote about the latter: When Peter Sellers, toward the end of his life, was asked if he'd have done anything different, he replied, "No, I'd do everything exactly the same, except I wouldn't see The Magus."  Michael Caine has done some of the worst movies ever made, hasn't he?

I selected them and editied them with my Kodak Easy Share  software...but if I did I can't find them again!!

The default location for Easy Share pictures is in a Folder Called "Kodak Pictures" in a sub-folder with the date of the download.

Vixmon:

Remember, the edited version of your pictures is probably too large to attach - you need to use the "Save As" feature and select "General Purpose" to get a postable size.

Lettuce From California Recalled Over E. Coli Contamination Concerns
Sunday, October 08, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO —  Less than a week after the Food and Drug Administration lifted its warning on fresh spinach grown in California's Salinas Valley, a popular brand of lettuce grown there was recalled Sunday over concerns about E. coli contamination.

The lettuce does not appear to have caused any illnesses, the president of Salinas-based Nunes Co. Inc. said.

The lettuce scare comes amid other federal warnings that some brands of spinach, bottled carrot juice and recent shipments of beef could cause grave health risks — including paralysis, respiratory failure and death.

Executives ordered the recall after learning that irrigation water may have been contaminated with E. coli, said Tom Nunes Jr., president of the company.

...
The recall covers green leaf lettuce purchased in grocery stores Oct. 3-6 in Arizona, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. It was also sold to distributors in those states who may have sold it to restaurants or institutions.

I could have sworn I hit post after writing a long post, but I don't see it...hmmm

Anyway, I'm home. I got here about an hour ago. It  took awhile for the cats to come around and let me know they are glad I'm here, but they clearly are. So now I am going to sleep.

Vixmom, great photos, can you email me the photo of the whole group?  I didn't get one of those and would really like one that hasn't been reduced. Thanks

Go for "Healthy" or "Hale and Hearty". By Ruben's standards the lady is positively scrawny!

Good rehearsal vibes, DR GEORGE.

Thanks!  Things actually went quite well.  We just did very basic blocking tonight.  We started at the beginning and were told our basic positions on stage and read through the script and moved a little bit, but we certainly didn't spend much time on fine-tuning the stage movements.  There are also a couple of dances that will need to be choreographed...at a later date. ;)

It's a 98 page (or so) movie script and we got all the way through page 73.  Not too much more to go.  Then we just have to memorize everything and then get the real detailed staging. :)
