Title: THE TOWER-ING INFERNO

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were towering, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're fuming because Tower is only discounting ten percent.

WE never had Tower records in North Dakota. However we did have Musicland and Sam Goody, which are both now gone. I have had less than pleasant experiences with them and I do not miss them.  Media Play was here and gone. At one time they had a good selection but that had deteriorated in recent years.  Media Play closed just before Christmas 2005.

The only store where we can get any music anymore that is other than top 40, rock or hiphip is at Barnes and Noble.

My favorite places to hangout when I was a kid....Hmmm..

Favorite bookstore was a used/new bookstore called Twice Told Tales... Neat books to read and see in there and comfy couches and of course, hot chocolate!!

Loved to go to the Record Shoppe (yes, that was the name) and you could place demo LPs on the old turntable to take a listen, chat with other browsers and even by an LP or tape. They were more than happy to get you a special order or something.  Sadly, they were forced out of business by Musicland.

THe coffee shops as of late have been the only really friendly places for chat and enjoyment. If you are interested in hiphop there are a few places but other music genres you are at a loss.

My favorite NY Hangout-Gotham Book Mart. Their new place doesn't have the vibe that the old place did, but they still have a great selection and some of the best clerks in the world. (And a HUGE cat!) Plus, when you mail order their books, they are neatly and beautifully wrapped in paper and taped up, so when you receive them, you feel like you're opening a wonderful present. I think the book 84 Charing Cross Road described this feeling very well.

In Atlanta, Oxford Books was our wonderful indie bookstore/hangout. They would let you take books upstairs to their coffee shop and spend time with them. They were put under by the mega bookstores. They were just a few blocks away from our new (100 year old) house. How I wish they were still there!

Favorite LA music/video store: Amoeba  (Too bad about Aron's!)

I'll have to think about the Topic of the Day.  Yesterday, I got digital cable installed and today, I get the carpets cleaned.  I have to be at my new place by 10:00 a.m., to let Greg, the carpet cleaner in.  I don't know if I need to stay the entire time or if I can leave right after letting him in.  He totally can be trusted...Greg, my sister, her former husband, his sister and several still current friends of my sister all went to Centralia College together, more than 20 years ago.  He'll let me know. :)

I've heard of this place, but I've never been.  The Lacey Library (before they moved into a new building quite a few years ago) used to have a library cat.  I don't know if the current building has a cat.  Probably not...there are probably too many people with allergies and all.

I forgot to mention the place I go to every single day---Cormier Coffee Roasters, near my house. It's an oasis of liberalism in my very uptight little city. (The new owners changed their name to "Cool Beans" but they will always be Cormier to me.) I've been going there for over 10 years every day I've been in Marietta to start my day with a 3 shot non-fat latte for $2 (we seem to have a preferred rate as community activists). I usually see half a dozen people I know whenever I go in, which is a great feeling to someone who grew up as a military brat, moving every few years.

I'm going to miss them so much when we move into Atlanta and I have to resort to Starbucks and mingle with snobby rich people. And nobody in town has better coffee---they roast their own. Mmmmmm. Maybe that's why I'm still up at 4AM!

Oh NOOOOOOO! I did an internet search to find a picture of Gotham Book Mart's huge cat, Pynchon (the New Yorker did a story on him when he arrived) and it appears that the store may be going out of business!

Here's a good description of the store:
http://www.gen-o.com/blog/?p=115

And from the NYT:

Now, the 86-year-old bookstore is in trouble again.

In the last six months, the owners of the building have moved to evict the store and its owner, Andreas Brown. Friends of Mr. Brown’s say the building’s owners were only trying to help Gotham get on its feet. They say that Mr. Brown, who hoped to buy the building eventually, fell behind on his $51,000 monthly rent, and owes at least $500,000 in rent, taxes, interest and other fees.

Whether he fell behind because he lost momentum during the difficult transition after the move from the old building or because — as some friends say — he devoted his money to his first love, buying more books, and to paying his employees rather than his rent, the Gotham is fighting for its life once again.

I am heartbroken! This would be a tragic loss!

With over 5000 stores nationwide, Starbuck's is hardly a place where the elite meet and greet.   :P

There are sure to be better places to get your coffee fix, Edisaurus.  Check the phone book, ask friends.  It's not like Atlanta is an itsy-bitsy one horse town with a single trough.

I remember when the Burbank Golden Mall opened.  Several blocks of San Fernando Blvd. were closed to traffic, paved over, and Burbank had it's very own open-air mall.  It was a fun place to go after school.

The street has been opened up to traffic again, of course, because all the stores eventually failed.  Sad, but last time I was in the area, that part of Burbank was absolutely ugly.

*sigh*

Good morning all!

How exciting about your new place, DR George!  After 25 (!) years in the same place I sometimes yearn for a change and the excitement of moving someplace new.   I have to keep telling myself how lucky I am that the joint is paid in full and be happy with that.

When I used to have the time, I went to the realtor sites just to see what was available and daydreamed about buying this or that house.  I think someone thought I had the money for the million dollar homes because I started getting ad's in the mail from realtors for them.  I never even left my email address so I guess that should be a warning that Big Brother IS watching.

I thought about shocking them by puting in a bid for a  few square yards since there was no way I could aford the whole house!  :)

We have a lot of used bookstores around.  I love them because I can get what I want then take it back and get part credit for another book.

I wish I could keep them all but our house is just to small.

I also trade books at work.  We have a bookshelf where you can take a book to read if you bring it back and put another one on the shelf as well.   Mostly smutt novels so I try to add some sci fi/fantasy books with what I bring in.

And here is my stop.

Laters all!

I was very disappointed yesterday.

Der B and I were up in Dover, doing our usual shopping at Sam's Club.  Last time we went, they had a bunch of Doctor Who DVDs for sale, ten bucks per disc, and I snagged three.

This time, they didn't have any of the discs at all.

(Looks like we'll have to go on-line to shop.)

Oh, re a question our esteemed BK asked yesterday -

All our on-line purchases are done by der Brucer.  That way, my own spending tendencies are kept in check.  My accounts are reserved for things like rent, certain bills, that sort of thing.

I don't know why he didn't get Rewind, though.  He may have been feeling broke at the time.  That happens on occasion.

By the way, I've shown How to Write a Dirty Book to my co-workers.  The cover has brought a smile to everyone's face.  They're also surprised that someone like me could know someone like BK.  They don't know anyone like BK.  I'm just lucky, I guess.   ;)

Today I am going to the arboretum with the hopes of finding the golden eagle that has been hanging around there. My friend's six-year-old boy loves eagles and very much wants to see one. So I shall have a busy day indeed. My friend has twins, so I shall be doubly busy.

When we went to the mountains to see the autumn leaves last week, I was able to get the boys to look for "little things no one else bothers to look at" to keep them from running off.

Thanks for the tips, unfortunately we've already done that. The closest indie coffee shop is still 4 miles away. And although Starbucks isn't elite by any means, this particular one borders one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Atlanta (not mine!) so the parking lot is always full of BMW's and Mercedes, and the store is full of people on their cell phones, ipods or computers, no one interacting and treating the employees like "the help".

Our Marietta coffee shop is our touchstone---we know all the kids there by name. We've seen hundreds of them them grow up and "fledge". They house sit for us, take care of our cats, help us carry heavy things if we need a hand, and we help them fix things that go wrong when we're there. They come to our screenings, we go to their weddings, their plays; they are like our extended family since we see them more than our real famlies.

This coffee shop has a very eclectic mix of people, reflecting our neighborhood. But the city is wiping out our neighborhood in a redevelopment/ethnic cleansing frenzy. Condos and townhomes are just about all that's being built. Probably by Mexicans who used to live here.

Our new neighborhood is almost all-white and neighborhood functions feel weird to us. We miss our Mexican neighbors---especially their cooking and watching the kids mutilate piñatas!

On the plus side, though, I will be able to walk to most of my jobs and the others are close enough to ride to on a scooter. No more highway battles in the morning! (At least now I have Guy Haines to keep me calm!)

I use to love Tower records but in the last couple of years they never had everything I was looking for, new or old ... like they used to.

My problem with on-line shopping is that you have to either pay a lot extra for fast shipping or wait for a week or more for normal shipping.  If I pre-order a new release it won't ship until the day before "street date" and I won't get it until it has been in stores several days.

When I was growing up my father had a "Men's and Boy's Wear" store where I used to hang out (well actually I was supposed to be helping out) but I really hung out at the local record store down the block.

What a great idea! I hope they can also stay quiet and not scare off any eagles.

Oh---another good perk of the new house...there are lots of owls there. We hear them every night, hooting at each other. (I've only seen barred owls so far.)

Thursday morning greetings!  It is cold here in SW Ohio today - freeze warning for tonight.

TOD - I thought about this topic all the way to work this morning and realized how much of a homebody I've always been.  When hang-out time becomes available, that's where I'd choose to be.  But BK's question was about when we were young, so I'll mention the now-gone J. L. Hudson department store in downtown Detroit.  My high-school best friend and I spent many Saturdays there.

Good morning, all!  I slept late, I've been responding to emails, and I have a deadline this morning to proof this "Appalachian Carols" arrangement for my publisher so it can be printed.   It's important to me to get it into print ASAP since the piece is dedicated to my father.  If any DR would like to hear it, its premiere performance, Dec 1985, before the addition of "I Wonder As I Wonder," can be heard at this site:

http://www.yrmusic.com/v2/artists/bios/artist.php?ID=11

I also have some Toyland checks to make on our computer repository of original source materials for Toyland and THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, and then some brain surgery.  I think I'll work on the Act One Finale since it's one long mother.

DR Edisaurus, if you just got the last BBC version of "Our Mutual Friend," you will not see Jack Wild.  He was in the 1970s adaptation, which isn't on video to my knowledge.  However, I loved the last version.  Did you see "Bleak House" last year?

TOD:
When I was a kid, going into downtown Cincinnati and spending a day at Shillito's was my idea of heaven; it was a sort of mini-Macy's with a little bit of everything.  Then I discovered Willis Music, which wasn't far from Shillito's, with their mysterious file cabinets loaded down with scores and sheet music and bins of classical records.  What a great way to spend a Saturday!

Edisaurus,
I totally understand your feelings about your beloved coffee shop. I think many people long for some sort of community gathering place--and there are so few left.

Several years ago I had a writing assignment on certain aspects of Chinese medicine, which proved to be the most difficult writing I've done. I usually write in solitude, but this time I did much of the early work at the local La Madeleine, where many people I know come and go. It had nothing to do with the food they serve; I just felt comfortable there. It's difficult to be more specific, but these places certainly fill a need for me and for others I know.

Hmmmm.....because I lived in the COUNTRY a lot when I was growing up, I couldn't get to any stores.  There was a small Five and Dime in a little town that we visited a few times a month that had lots of toys and kids' books.  Now and then I bought one, if I couldn't find a record I liked.

I still like Half Price Books - if I go in the morning BEFORE a lot of people get there.  Interesting things.

Shopping online is what I do mostly now....

BK re: your questions from yesterday.

As to why nobody on your friends list is clicking on your books, well I think DR FJL might be right. People don't click on things they have to pay for.

But just because people aren't clicking on the actual links does not mean that they are not going to the site.  I know when i get links i almost never click on them at the time the email is sent. But if i want to view the site i just take note of the website and go there later (but not necessarily from the link).

Also I think part of what DR Cillaliz said is true. I think there are so many expenses these days that a lot of people have to be really careful what they buy.  But i guess that was not really your question. You want to know why people who can afford it are not getting it.  Perhaps there are certain topics that don't interest people. Or perhaps they are getting it from amazon (where you cannot trace it).

Favorite hang-outs:
In high school I spent many hours at the Bluth Bros Theatre, which BK writes of in the Kritzer books. God, how I loved that place! I am still awed by the talent that went through there. In my 20's, I frequented a bookstore called Papa Bach, on Santa Monica Blvd in LA, which, like all good bookstores, had a resident cat. It was also the only place at the time where you could sit and read and not feel pressured to buy. How I miss places like that!

Now that I think about it, I didn't have any hangouts when I was young. My father was a pharmacist and had his own drugstore/soda fountain in Ohio when I was young, but he didn't have the mentality to make it very profitable. He was always very generous to people in need...so generous that the store didn't survive and he went into the service to support our family. If i had been older, this would have been my hangout. Afer that we moved all the time, so it was only when I came to Marietta that I felt I was a part of a community and able to hang out.

Good morning dear Esteemed, many-meetinged, and Towered-out BK --

I thought that it was ironic that the column title ended up being "The Tower-ing Inferno" ..... in light of the airplane accident in NYC yesterday.

for the TOD :

I know that it is mentioned by "Benjamin,"  but I also used to love to go to Wallich's Music City in Hollywood.  You could ask for a record, take it to a listening booth, and make your selection at your own pace.  And as you and I have sung in a booth at Musso & Franks..... "It's Music City, Sunset and Vine..."

(sung to the unlikely tune of "Rockabye Baby!"

Edisaurus,
What makes you think that we Hainsie/Kimlets are NOT writing dirty books? :)

Aha! Well, based on what I just read, it sounds like fun!

I never read these particular type of books during the time the story took place, but it struck me how these "dirty books" as described would now be considered as tame as a Harlequin romance. "He clasped her in his steel bands and crushed her mouth under his." "He stiffened his resolve". LOL!

My ex-mother-in-law used to read these all the time, even though they were as formulaic as BK described in his story. At one point, she heard that Harlequin was looking for new stories, and talked my ex and me into trying to write one, with herself as our technical advisor.

We were instructed by Harlequin to write 3 chapters with an outline for the rest of the chapters. Part of the formula was that the heroine was usually parentless (thus able to be "rescued" by the hero) and there were conflicts and misunderstandings that kept them apart until the last chapter. We thought: "Hey, this is easy!"

We did what was requested, but never heard anything back for months and months. Finally we got a pink slip with no explanation---just a very curt dismissal.

A few months later my ex m-i-l showed up on our doorstep with a Harlequin romance. She was steaming! She was holding a book that contained, almost word for word, what we had written. Some of the details, like names and places, had been changed, but the dialogue was almost verbatim. For the first three chapters, that is. Then it followed our plot line but without our dialogue. I looked up the writer's bio on the book and she just happened to live in Don Mills, Ontario, home of Harlequin. What a coinky-dink! Was somebody pilfering the mailroom?

We never thought it would go anywhere so we didn't bother copywriting what we'd written. So while m-i-l was steamed, we were both tickled that we'd written something that somebody may have been "inspired by". But we didn't enjoy it enough to try again...

Our Rexall Drugstore also had a soda fountain....but it was gone by the time I was in third grade or so.

My Dad's drugstore was also a Rexall with a soda fountain.

Where are the Rexalls of yesteryear?

So many readers evoking so many memories for me!

Woody, I remember The Golden Mall in Burbank very well.  I used to work in the Book City there.  And right down the street was Book Castle, another terrific book store whose merchandise used to swell my library.

Elmore, Shillito's was our department store, despite the fact that there was also a Pogue's Department store in downtown Cincy.  My father was an architect for Federated Department Stores which owned Shillito's, so the family got a 20% discount...thus all our shopping was done there.  I also remember Willis which had hard-to-find show records.

JRand, when I first moved to Dallas in the mid-seventies, I lived right around the corner from the very first Half-Price Book Store on McKinny Ave. and was an habitue there.  I'm glad to find them now in Cincy and Louisville and come November, we'll have one right here in Lexington.  Since they've become a chain, they are not as marvelous and eclectic as they were in those early days in Dallas when they were just a one of a kind original used bookstore.  But in these days of bland bookstores, they are still an anomaly and unique.  One tip:  They don't pay well for books you want to sell.

My favourite place growing up in Cincinnati was Main Street where there were three great used bookstores within a block of each other...Bert Smith's Acres of Books, Neville's Antiques, and Ohio Bookstore.  Both Acres and Ohio each had five floors of books and what a treasure hunt one could have there.  Most of my allowance was spent in these places.

The only one left standing now is Ohio Bookstore.  I was there a few weekends ago, gathering up a hoard of inexpensive goodies.  The two guys that worked there when I used to go in high school, still are there and run the place.  One was probably around my age when he started working there in high school.  They recognized me and we had a pleasant chat.  They still carry old magazines and sheet music as well as books.  They used to have old 78 records as well.  It's still a great store where you can always find a nice surprise.

Oddly enough, when I moved to California, I discovered another Bert Smith's Acres of Books in Long Beach.  It was the same Bert Smith from Cincinnati.  He had apparently moved to Long Beach at some point and had sold the book store in Cincy, which retained the name.  The store in Long Beach was also great and, as far as I know, still there.

BK, sad to hear about Tower Records.  I remember my first visit to it after I moved to LA and I was agog.  I too recall its wild and eccentric stock and its friendly and knowledgeable help.  But, as you say, over the years, it's gotten more and more generic and began stocking the same of crap that all the other big chains do.  I can personally attest to the shrinking of their standards and vintage singers in the last few years.  And you can never find the DVDs that you can find in Amoeba.

It's even happening...to a lesser degree...to Canterbury Records in Pasadena, which was a great store.

When I moved out to LA in '78, Hollywood Blvd, probably had eight-to-ten great used bookstores from Highland down to Gower.  If Book City has finally croaked its last gasp, there are now probably none!

How exciting about your new place, DR George!  After 25 (!) years in the same place I sometimes yearn for a change and the excitement of moving someplace new.   I have to keep telling myself how lucky I am that the joint is paid in full and be happy with that.

Thanks, Danise!  I've been renting since I moved out of my parents' house (in 91 or 92) and I know I couldn't have afforded to buy something back then, but I can now look forward to the day that it'll all be paid for. :)

My first stop on my first visit to LA was Tower Records. The editor I used to assist knew that was exactly the right place to go my first day there. Weird Al happened to be shopping there; we had interviewed him a few years ago and this was my first inkling that it was no big deal to run into celebrities in LA. (Al was extremely nice and down to earth and pretended to remember me.) Then I went to Aron's and saw David Byrne shopping with a beautiful Asian woman and child. This was before everyone started shoppping on the internet. I bet most famous people just order from the internet now!

I would much rather go to a store, especially one that has listening stations. Tower here still has that, but only to listen to the CD's *they* choose. Warehouse used to be good---they would let you listen to anything and then rewrap it, but eventually the management put a stop to that. Maybe that's why they're out of business now!

I have bought albums just on the cover art alone (I used to love those Claude Bolling anthropomorphic album covers!) but I doubt that would ever happen shopping on the internet. I love to have the CD packaging, the smell of the ink and the texture of the paper used---buying an album on iTunes is just not the same! And if you only buy certain songs, you're missing out on all those other songs you would have discovered had you bought the album. Convenience isn't always a great thing.

We had a great huge record store here in Atlanta in the '70's called Peaches. The record bins were peach crates, and outside, they had these immense paintings on the exteriors depicting different album cover art. I was sad when that closed.

Amoeba in LA is the only record store that has excited me in a long time...

"Aventurera" is here!

But the DVD description on the back of the package is in Spanish and I see nothing about subtitles. And the cover art is different than the one on Amazon. It's just a head and shoulders portrait of the star...no hair pulling---nothing lurid. I'm afraid to open it in case they won't let me return it if there are no subtitles.

Then again, maybe it doesn't need them. Some films speak for themselves.

During my late grade school and early middle school years I lived in the small town of Central Point. I would often ride my bike to the drug store, which was across the parking lot from the grocery store, it was there that I discovered the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland. I would also often pick up Aurora models...vintage cars usually.

There was, and I believe still is, a usued bookstore in downtown Medford. Don't recall the name but it was very much the dusty old place you would see in movies. My buddy Dave and I would go there a lot during our high school years and look around. I remember picking up the 1950s sci-fi novel THE BIG EYE, and some mystery novel from the early 1900s which read like an old movie serial.

If there are better posts than these on all the Internet, I have yet to see them and that is why I love this here site.

My favorite hangouts have been written about lovingly in the Kritzer books - Index Radio and Records, Wallich's Music City, the Wilshire and Fairfax May Company, the La Cienega miniature golf course, Marty's Bike and Candy Shop - there's nothing like these jernts today - nothing.

When Together Again moved from LACC we played at a small theater on the Golden Mall - that was in 1982, I think - it was a weird vibe, but there were really interesting stores there, especially the bookstores that Pogue mentions.

I appreciate the responses to my impassioned query of yesterday, some of which make sense.  I do know that some people I know have chosen the paperback versions via amazon - and I do know when sales are happening there.  Again, if finances are an issue and anyone wants to read the books they haven't gotten all they have to do is send me a PM or e-mail and it will all work out.

When I was in college, the Kosher Country in Whitehead Hall was THE place to hang out.  I could always rely on someone I knew being there, usually with a table full of welcoming fellow students.  And I had worked at the Kosher Country in Coney Island for a little while, so i usually got a friendly greeting (although no free food) from some of the people behind the counter, since they went back and forth between the two locations.

JRand, I rarely sell any books either.  But I had something like six thousand to move, so I sold a lot of seconds and duplicates of editions that I had upgraded over the years and books that had either been given to me or had been sent to me to adapt into movies or whatever before I left.  I went to my and BK's good friends at Bookfellows and they gave me great money for them.

Once I got here, I culled yet another box out of the collection that I didn't really want or knew I'd never read and took them to Half-Price in Cincy.  Most of it was junk, but there was some meat in the pile and I think I got a grand total of 13 bucks for it.  Barely paid for the gas up there and back.  Another friend of mine took some vintage horror and supernatural pp to them and got next-to-nothing.  He did much better when he took a box into a local used bookstore here.

I bought some stuff from Caiman on Amazon and on Ebay. On Ebay they (she) had a CD for Buy it now. The ebay auction said that 18 copies were available. Well, turns out she had no copies. Said she would back order it. I asked why she would have something up for auction on Ebay that she didn't even have in stock. No answer. Asked for my money back. No answer. Then another e-mail saying ti was on back order. She would never answer any questions directly. 6 months later still no CD and no refund. I finally threatened legal action with the postal authorities. Got my money refunded.

Sad thing is that on both Amazon and Ebay Caiman has tons of things (or so they say) that I would love to buy...for really good prices...but I guess if you sell things you don't have your profit tends to be fairly hight! LOL!

Not his version but it does have Coffe in a Cardboard Cup

Does it have either of my favorites - "Java Jive" or "Proper Cup of Coffee from a Proper Copper Pot"?

Yes to Java Jive and no to Proper Cuppa

And my favorite tea song, (and one of my favorite songs ever) Long John Baldry's "Everything Stops For Tea"?

and yes to Everything Stops.

If elmore needs reading matter, I can think of a brand spanking new book he's just received - easy to read, you know - no story over twenty-five pages, I don't think.

I own the book and I'm doing your show.  That's enough for now!  I'm already living with you 8 hours a day.

Since I find Mr Patinkin's solo albums with their peculiar variations in decibel level only good for peeling paint from walls and upsetting the neighbors, I prefer the OBC with the late great Lillian Hayman.

Also, Paul Mantee, even at 70 years old, was a hunk! And I never saw a guy with bigger hands!

Rex Reason was also looked very good.

Tommy Sands was the most frightening...he did not even look human.

But good or bad I love seeing any all of those people!

I actually saw it a couple of days ago (it runs here on Tuesdays).

I think it could do okay being after LOST. I would imagine it would keep a lot of that show's viewers.

I do like it.  AGain, it's not my favorite new show. But it is entertaining. I like the characters. They are interesting. And it's sort of good that they don't tell us everything at once.

I like scott wolf and am quite curious what he did in there to make his girlfriend turn on him. I really liked that girl that died. I wish that we could have seen her more.

So it was confirmed by several friends who went for free last night - Barbra Streisand's concert last night at Madison Square Garden was indeed on several papering services.  Perhaps it's a result of the super-high ticket price ($750 for not-particularly great floor-level seats), with the really crappy seats going for $100.

Coffee in a Cardboard Cup is from the wonderful and underappreciated show by Kander and Ebb called

70 Girls 70

It's based on Peter Coke's play Breath of Spring and the movie of the play, Make Mine Mink.

It was not a success when it played on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. It opend on 15 April, 1971 and played a meager 36 performances. But it lives on in near cult-status. It was done recently by Encores here in New York.

Right...but I should be able to do that with my VCR/DVR so it irritates me to pay an extra fee per month for something I should be able to do for free. Their cable box does not support HDMI or whatever it takes to do this, even though our TV is set up for that, so it's almost like they force you to get the DVR box. Which I will probably do, it's just the principle. Kind of like when iTunes makes you upgrade your OS to be able to use it. Argh. Thanks, tho!

How ridiculous!  Narrow aisles and towering shelves that can only be reached by ladder are what great old bookstores are about.   What do the disabled expect the bookstore to do?  Moved to a bigger facility that would cost more in rent (to say nothing of the move) just to accommodate them?  Either that or cut half their stock.

Thanks so much DR Ben for posting that. I know the lyrics by heart, but LJB's album credits the song to a production called "Come Into The Kitchen". Thanks to you, now I know it really was "Come Out Of The Pantry". (Originally the story came from a silent film called "Come Out of the Kitchen"!) You'd think he would have gotten it right, since he Came Out Of The Closet early on. He was one of the most versatile singers ever. Too bad he's no longer with us.

Now, will I ever be able to find "Come Out Of The Pantry"? It has Faye Wray and Jack Buchanan so it's not like it's a bunch of nobodies.

For the most part I do agree with you and there are some things that can not and should not be changed. However, some accomodations can be made such as modifying customer service aspect and the like.  I, for one love the old ladders and comfy couches.  That is an aspect I don't ever want to see change but with creativity some things can be accomplished.

I have some empathy for the disabled for I am partially deaf and in some situations I am rendered totally deaf. It is a double edged sword and the feelings can cut either way. I try and remain partial but prejudice is the greatest enemy.

I try not use the word disability that much for it is such a negative word. I prefer challenges and the is purely a subjective term that I prefer.  I respect that people have an opinion. I have seen both the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to prejudice and I do mean ugly.

I need to get the new Xmen DVD but lord knows when I'll get around to watching it.  The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is still sitting in the wrapper, untouched.

Gotta run.

Have a wonderful evening all!

Danise, is it the recent theatrical release of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe or the BBC production?

Just took a glance at the overnight ratings, and as I feared (and predicted), THE NINE took quite a tumble falling 30% from its premiere last week. It finished third in the timeslot to CSI: NY (which saw a big jump) and NBC's DATELINE (which replaced KIDNAPPED).

The store has a website (http://www.acresofbooks.com/).  Does that help?

Oh, wait, der B already posted this.  Dang.

Oh, that tussle between Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey on the set of GREY'S ANATOMY happened on Monday and was all over the internet by Wednesday.

Supposedly, the fight started when Washington made a surly comment to T. R. Knight about being late to the set. Dempsey defended him and told Washington to pick on someone his own size which is when Washington lunged for Dempsey's neck.

The scuttlebutt is that Washington has been enviously chafing for quite some time about the amount of attention that has been lavished on Dr. McDreamy since the premiere of the show, and it finally came to this on the set.

PROJECT RUNWAY 3 -- SPOILERS

Part 1 of the two-part finale aired last night.

Did we learn of Jeffrey's fate?

There was a moment during previews for next week when we heard -- "...and unfortunately..." -- WHAT? "Unfortunately WHAT, Tim?" !!!!!

My mind raced...and my thoughts were that it was a red herring...that "unfortunately", Jeffrey was put through the embarrassment of suspicion and investigation for nothing.

Jeffrey's reaction -- was it one of grieving...or overwhelming relief/release?

?????????????????????

(Read this story, paying close attention to Laura's comments and Jeffrey's. And then tell me what you think about it:

http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/project-runway-3-finalist-laura-bennett-stands-by-cheating-allegation-4364.php )

Did Laura piss us off?

Oh, HELL YES! One can attribute much to editing...but frankly, they can't edit footage that didn't exist in the first place, and Laura's lips were curled in a sneer the moment she walked into the hotel room and greeted Uli and Michael. She seems to seethe with disdain for Jeffrey. And she's discounting Michael way too much when she talks about "beating Jeffrey". I pray she doesn't win Project Runway 3.

Did Michael have anything to say about it?

Yes.

But mild-mannered Michael missed making much more than mimickry of Laura's comments.

AND there's something fishy to this whole suspicion streak -- EVEN IF Jeffrey had someone finish some of his garments (hems, hooks, etc.), that STILL would not explain how the garments fitted the models beautifully to such an extent that he doesn't need to do more. Are they suggesting he pre-selected his models, flew them out to LA and had the garments fitted to them?

I believe in Jeffrey. And I believe he's had far more experience making clothes than any of them.

Did Uli care?

Bless her heart. Uli is a sweet soul.

Stay tuned!

I need one of those clocks like Matthew Perry's character has in his office on "Studio 60".

-And, yes, I have taken lots of pictures.  The satellite computer connection is a bit slow here, so I'll post some pics when I get back.  However, as a teaser: It's kind of amazing just who you could end up running into onto a cruise ship!

Thank you very much DR RLP for putting the spoiler alerts.

And DR MattH, re: MEDIUM.  I am really happy that it is coming back early. But i wonder if it will do well on Wednesdays at 10pm. I really liked the monday night timeslot.

I think that some shows (like GREY'S ANATOMY) can do well on any night. But some shows should stay in the timeslot where they are familiar.

I wonder when the Canadian station will be showing it since their schedule is pretty full. They already (stupidly IMO) moved DANCING WITH THE STARS to saturday (doesn't really affect me since i can watch it on ABC). They used to show it monday at 9pm (while NBC showed it at 10pm).

Gotta go, almost time for SURVIVOR.

Musically, my favorites so far are "The Faraway Part of Town" and "I"ll Take you Dreaming".

I remember the movie Pepe, with Cantiflas, right? But I don't remember this beautiful song. Same with The Court Jester. I remember a lot of the songs but not this one!

And I absolutely love his version of "Two Lost Souls", and Susan Egan is my favorite of his female collaborators. (I like Kerry Butler---she was amazing in Bat Boy.)

Do you mean that idiot Angela, designer for the Filene's Basement of WhoresRUs?

Nah, she's talking about Alison...sweet Alison whose "recyclables" ensemble appalled Nina and Heidi.

Thus far, in Jennifer's neck of the woods, the competition has seen these weekly winner (and "auf wiedersehned") results:

1. Keith (gown made from bed sheets from Atlas Apts. --Stacey auf'ed)
2. Kayne (Fit for a Queen - Miss USA's runway gown -- Malan auf'ed)
3. Uli (Designer's Best Friend...model and dog -- Katherine auf'ed)
4. Angela (Reap What You Sew -- Macy's design with Laura and Michael -- Keith expelled before runway.  Bonnie auf'ed)
5. Michael (Icon-Pam Grier -- hot pink shorts and top) (Bradley auf'ed)
6. Michael (Recycled materials)  (Alison auf'ed)

SPOILER

SPOILER

THIS MEANS YOU, JENNIFER

The next week is the "mom" competition which Vincent inexplicably wins and which sees Robert sent packing

The anti-Christ's mistress doesn't leave until week 8 after the "Jetsetter" design competition when they wore their own clothes on the trip to Paris. Jeffrey's first victory.

In week 9, Jeffrey wins again with his "couture" creation and Vincent is blessedly auf'ed.  One hoped it was for good.

In week 10, the show screwed the remaining designers and fans by bringing back Angela and Vincent for another chance (as they had both "won" a competition in the past).  It was the cocktail dress competition which Laura won, finally and deservedly.  As for Angela and Vincent -- woof! -- they proved themselves totally inept in most respects, and Kayne got the boot leaving us with a final four contestants.  Ta-DA!

And Larry...do you really think Filene's would let Angela anywhere near their WhoresRUs department?

Maybe in the crafts section...or possibly the notions area.

Edisaurus - you got Haines His Way?  Goodie!

I've just heard my favorites--haven't gotten to hear the whole CD yet because I've been editing music most of the day. But what I've heard so far is great!

And I recognize the harpist, Amy. She and her husband Peter Kent played on our score for "Ociee" at the late lamented Cello Studios. She was really nice---I helped her get her harp out of her car. And Peter as our concertmaster was terrific---great at playing gypsy-style violin, too! And Grant, well, you know...
Those sessions were one of the highlights of my life.

Last time I was out to LA was for one of Randy Newman's scoring sessions. I was listening from the control room, and Randy insisted that it was best to hear the music on the sound stage, so he brought me out to the stage and I sat with the harpist (that may have been Amy as well...I can't remember.) That was a fun score, full of drama and harps and women's choir. Too bad it wasn't for a better movie...

I’m home, had a FANTASTIC time, and am in desperate need of sleep having had a late night with Bryan & his girlfriend.  So I’ll make this short.

First, my sympathy for those of you who don’t get a chance to meet the guys from Oz, they are just delightful, though I do believe I tired them out yesterday with my passion for walking.  It is a fault of mine, just ask elmore.

Jeff & Betsy, as always, were wonderful hosts, treating us to a delicious dinner & fun evening.  Both Jeff & MBarnum made excellent chauffeurs.

I have a book, if I can keep my eyes open, which must be completed by Saturday afternoon.  At the speed I’m reading these days, about a book every two months, I really must try & focus here.  I’ll return once I’ve finished & post my photos from the last two days.  I have some nice ones of the falls & Rose Garden.

It has Faye Wray and Jack Buchanan so it's not like it's a bunch of nobodies.

spoiler space

I was disgusted with what appeared to me to be Laura's complete and utter jealousy with what Jeffrey had brought to show. I paid no attention to that probably misleading clip from next week. From what I understand Jeffrey's clothes did indeed show during Fashion Week, but I think she (Laura) should be ashamed of her sour grapes attitude.

I don't know who won; Laura's clothes from the little bit I saw did look nice. Did not care for anything I saw from Uli or Michael, but we've only had faint glimpses thus far.

So apart from the drama over Jeffrey, this was a very dull episode, I thought.

DR Jennifer:

I think MEDIUM will have an easier time of it on Wednesday than it did on Monday. CSI: MIAMI is more popular than CSI: NY, though I doubt it will win the timeslot, it should have a very good chance to at least come in second which is what it was doing on Monday.

Of course, if STUDIO 60 loses any more viewers, NBC might well take it off Monday night and put it somewhere else opening the timeslot back up for MEDIUM.

Loved GREY'S ANATOMY, of course, with surprises abounding and my tears flowing freely.

One note of discontent (not related to the content of the show). Twice the idiot engineer at our local affiliate broke into the program's last 10 minutes with a bumper about an upcoming news report and then quickly realized his mistake and went back to the show, but it was VERY intrusive and mood-bursting. Already fired off a note to the station, but luckily GREY'S gets another run tomorrow night so I'll rewatch to get the full effect of the climactic scenes.

CSI had one of its most brutal and disconcerting episodes tonight concerning a gang of punks raoming the streets of Vegas beating down tourists just for kicks.

Between this and last night's CSI: NY (which I watched this afternoon), it's getting somewhat harder to watch the violence in these shows back-to-back. Thankfully, they aren't all pitched at this high a degree of on-screen violence.

I forgot all about SURVIVOR tonight! And haven't even watched last night's JERICHO (is anyone else watching it? It is pretty good!).

Are they mad re what they're charging for the special benefit performance of CHICAGO for its 10th anniversary?  $500 for the rear mezzanine?

I'll get off my soapbox now.

TCB, did you check out Paolo Conte, the Italian singer on the S&V CD?

It is sitting on top of the CD player in my car waiting for me to remember to play it on my way to work some morning.  The fact that I go to work at 5:45 a.m. may explain why I have not yet remembered to put in the player.   ::)

DakotaCelt, I don't mean to sound heartless and I am sympathetic to the disabled, but that bookstore has been there for years!  To make it disabled-friendly would be prohibitively expensive for them.  It's one thing when one is building a new store and these considerations should be taken in, older buildings and businesses have to have some leeway.

Next came tonight's UGLY BETTY. I really enjoyed tonight's episode, and I like that Betty is losing a bit of her naivete and realizes that the snakes at her job just aren't going to change and are not looking out for her best interests.

I have been watching that show on the ABC site. It is an interesting show and I have been enjoying it. It is based on a Colombian Telenovela.

NDSU landscaping and architecture programs have been busy the last few months...

They were involved in the Extreme Home Makeover this past summer and tomorrow they will be putting up a Lustron house.

Lustron house to be rebuilt
Herald Staff Report
Published Thursday, October 12, 2006
· The Grand Forks "Lustron" house is ready to go up.

The metal home, which was disassembled and removed from its original home on Lincoln Drive after the 1997 flood, is going to be rebuilt at the Myra Museum on Friday, with help from NDSU construction management, interior design and landscape architecture students.

The house, a steel Lustron-brand kit house erected in the late 1940s, is one of only about 2,500 such steel houses sold nationwide in the years after World War II. They were designed as affordable housing for returning soldiers.

As many as 25 Lustron homes were built in North Dakota, including one in Fargo and another in Finley.

The historical significance of the home meant the city was required to put it back together after it was removed from Lincoln Drive. The museum board agreed to make the home a permanent part of the facility.

It's been about five years since the 1,200-square-foot, single-story, three-bedroom house was taken down. In 2001, it was put into storage to wait until the flood protection project was completed.

The home is made almost completely of steel, with the exception of the concrete foundation, floor slab and some copper piping. It has walls made of three layers: an outer layer of steel panels, a middle layer of insulation and an inner layer of steel panels finished in porcelain enamel.

It took about nine full days of work to disassemble the home in 2001.

Friday, the Myra Museum on Belmont Road and 24th Avenue South will host a Lustron "house-raising" event. The public is welcome to attend
