Title: I LED THREE LIVES
Post by: bk on October 17, 2006, 12:14:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes led three lives, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're dining on a duck-billed platypus right now.

Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
And the band would OBJURGATE
Because they thought he should let her lead every once in a while.

TOD:???

Too early for me, I was up very late and haven't had coffe yet. I'll have to think about the word on my drive in to work, providing I don't fall asleep.

But I will say that I am always amused by the word "phlegm" in the movie Cabaret, which Maria Schneider pronounces "fleg-um".

I'd think "phlegm" would be a dirty word to most singers!

When I awoke  this morning, I was dreaming the phrase "The later the day, the shinier the fish", which I must have made up, because it makes no sense. But it did in my dream. Perhaps it's because now I know the origins of "What is it, fish?"

Good morning, all!  The Mac Man came over and updated my OSX to OS10.4, and suddenly my computer is dancing around like a gazelle in a tutu.  I have programs within programs, I can watch movies on my iTunes, and now I have something called a Dashboard on my dersktop: scary!

My associates in Toyland are back from Italy today and I look forward to tales and perhaps photos.  There's something afoot with a recording release as well and I look forward to that news.

TOD:  I need to think, so it may be a while.

Good morning!

It's gray and drizzly here, very much an autumn day. Didn't get too cold last night (50s) and isn't going very high today (low 60s), so it's just what I would expect for a mid-October day.

In the "I Told You So" Department:

ABC has picked up the new series BROTHERS & SISTERS for a full season run, the fourth new series given a full season order. This is in line with my prediction last week.

I'd say right now that 1 VS. 100 will be the next one to get picked up, but I think NBC will have to see a second week of ratings numbers on it before doing that. Last week's night winning score might have been a fluke or mere curiosity.

So, in light of that, I'll predict that the next new show to get the green light for a full season will be CBS' SHARK.

Read an interview with one of the series directors of SHowtime's DEXTER (who also directed some SIX FEET UNDER episodes as well as the feature films L.I.E. and 12 AND HOLDING). Interesting interview and makes me eager to see DEXTER first this afternoon when I fire up the home theater for afternoon viewing.

TOD: There are so many words that amuse me that it's hard to choose. Lots of musical terms are funny to me: hypophrygian or hypomixolydian, semiquaver, melismatic...

Colloquialism is also fun to say. I saw a play once (can't remember the name but I'm dure our DR's would know) where, as  a running joke,  a character kept referring to words as a "local colloqualism". I liked the way that rolled off the tongue, or rather, ensnared by the tongue.

In the local colloquialism department, Greg and I often adopt words that are misprounounced by our neighbors: words like "chimbley" (chimney) and "whelps" (welts). There are so many and we use them so often that we forget that this is not how the words are pronounced. I'm waiting for the day when someone hears us talking this way and thinks we're "ignunt".

DR George,

I was dismayed and then immediately relieved, since I read the whole story arc of Ebonie's adventures at once. I know moving will be a difficult adjustment for my cats, especially Bailey, who is the big alpha love cat but hides under our claw foot tub when there's a hint of thunder. The new house has a tub with a skirt so he'll have to formulate a new duck-n-cover plan. And there's no logical place to put a litter box, the house is so small. They all have their separate domains in our current (also small) house, so I'm sure there will be some turf wars once we all move.

Congratulations on your new place and the re-emergence of Ebonie! Sounds like you need a trim carpenter, though. Hmmmm...o where could we find one?

Re: today's notes--

Graham Greene must have spent some time in Brighton. "Brighton Rock" is, among other things, a delicious candy confection--a hard stick about a foot long with a center the has a design running through the stick. The center has an indescribable texture. Yum! Brighton is the only place I know of where you can buy the edible Brighton Rock.

And "The End of the Affair", the movie based on GG's novel with the yummy Ralph Fiennes, had scenes that took place in Brighton. It's a wonderful little town!

I'm waiting for the day when someone hears us talking this way and thinks we're "ignunt".

Which brings to mind two Tom Lehrer Lyrics:

From I Wanna Go Back To Dixie
Quote
I wanna go back to Dixie
I wanna be a dixie pixie
And eat cornpone 'til it's comin' outta my ears
I wanna talk with Southern gentlemen
And put my white sheet on again,
I ain't seen one good lynchin' in years.

The land of the boll weevil,
Where the laws are medieval,
Is callin' me to come and nevermore roam.
I wanna go back to the Southland,
That "y'all" and "shet-ma-mouth" land,
Be it ever so decadent,
There's no place like home.

And from It Makes A Fellow Proud To Be A Soldier

Quote
Our captain has a handicap to cope with, sad to tell.
He's from Georgia, and he doesn't speak the language very well.

The article concludes with:

Quote
The American airdrop represents the largest deployment of any letter to a foreign country since 1984. During the summer of that year, the U.S. shipped 92,000 consonants to Ethiopia, providing cities like Ouaououa, Eaoiiuae and Aao with vital, life-giving supplies of L's S's and T's. The consonant-relief effort failed, however, when vast quantities of the letters were intercepted and horded by violent, gun-toting warlords.

In regard to “You say potato, I say potahto” there is a joke that when this unusual song was sung in English theater auditions, nobody got it because the singers invariably sang it: “You say potahto and I say potahto, You say tomahto and I say tomahto….” But when I was at the University of Texas, we had our own linguistic joke that went like this: “You say potato and I say pertayter, You say tomato and I say termayter!”

My new turntable software (I think it's the software) is already malfuntioning - the ION customer service is dreadful - they just blame everything on whatever their script says.  It's the USB cord (I tried another, same prob), it's the software, it's whatever.  Vinnie is supposed to come over at some point to see if we can fix it or reload the software.  It's only recording one side of the stereo track.  It certainly worked perfectly for four albums.

Be sure to buy the safety stretch cat collar.  After a few scary situations with cat collars our indoor cats never wore them.  We were just super careful not to let them out & constantly did a cat count, even if the door was never opened.  You have just learned how cats can get into some scary spots.  I never used the washer or dryer without knowing where the cats were, and then there was the time the cat jumped in the frig while I wasn’t looking.  Lucky for us all I opened the frig back up when I didn’t see him.

Speaking of Troy Donahue, in the notes....didn't you say, MR BK, that you also had A DISTANT TRUMPET on DVD to watch?  I think this movie also features Susan Pleshette who was then Mrs Donahue....when the movie was made, but not by the time is was released.

DR MattH did STUDIO 60 get picked up yet for a full season? Or did it start out with one?

I think the only new shows i'm watching this year are: UGLY BETTY, HEROES, BROTHERS & SISTERS, STUDIO 60 and MEN IN TREES.  The first two are my favorites.

I have to say that I was at first a bit put off by "Studio 60" and its rapid-fire dialogue and multitude of characters.  It seemed to me that it was going to be too much to follow at 10 p.m. after a long day.

But I've either adjusted or it has simply HOOKED me.  I really enjoy it.

I watch all of these, but not "Brothers & Sisters" so much.  It's just not grabbing me.  I watch it and think that this is the show that Betty Buckley was supposed to be on. ::)

Does anyone know the details (other than "creative differences"?)

Golly.  What a fortuitous break for the rest of us that she's NOT on the show.  She'd have been all wrong for it.

I LOVE THIS SHOW!

Oh, no, it didn't start out with one. No new show starts out with a full season order any more. It's just too expensive for the network if the show bombs. STUDIO 60 started out with a 13 episode order, and that's where it stands now. I haven't checked the ratings for last night yet (I'm headed there after I leave this site), but it it lost any viewers from the last two weeks (last week was steady), I suspect NBC will not renew it past those 13 original segments.

I understand it's one of the most expensive shows on TV right now at $3 million per episode. What's saving it right now is that it's among the top 20 shows in a demographic NBC covets - the affluent viewer. But it needs to get its total viewer numbers up considerably.

That's what I heard, too. Over the course of a nine months production period, they just couldn't deal with the ego, demands, and unpredictable behavior.

Like DR Ron Pulliam, I don't think she would have meshed with this cast at all. I think Sally Field was a fortuitous bit of casting.

Since I had THE LITTLE MERMAID set out, I put in the second disc in the set and watched "The Making of THE LITTLE MERMAID." Great to see the late Howard Ashman looking so healthy and alive working with Jodi Benson and others on the music, and the whole triumphant end to a highly tension-filled production period (where DIsney was considering abandoning animation all together) left me with tears in my eyes.

I resisted, but I will be returning to this in the next few days. I haven't watched the movie in years.

I finally went to to the DVR and watched Sunday night's DEXTER. A chilling episode (with a sequence involving an alligator that literally had me jump out of my chair) with a teen killer. I'm really enjoying this series. And Michael C. Hall, whom I've never found particularly sexy, is very sexy in this even though he's playing a character with a heart of ice and only feigning normalcy.

I concluded the afternoon with last night's CSI: MIAMI. A surprise murderer made the episode an enjoyable one, and there was an extra payoff with a crooked judge who's been dogging Horatio's trail for a couple of seasons now. I keep telling these crooks that they shoudl never mess with Horatio, but they don't listen.

I watched "Heroes" and "Studio 60" last night.

Only those shows.

And I managed to process about 300 DVDs from their keep cases into my new aluminum box (1,000 CDs/DVDs per box).  I have about 850 available keep cases.  Don't know what to do with them....store them?  Toss them?  Bundle 'em up and sell them on eBay?  Recycle 'em?

Anyone with ideas on the topic, please let me know.

It's AMAZING how much room these unnecessarily oversized containers take up.  I'm going to be freeing up SO MUCH SPACE in my condo it's almost criminal!

Just back from looking at last night's overnight ratings.

It's an ominous sign for STUDIO 60. Not only did it fall 15% from last week's results (now under 8 million viewers), but WHAT ABOUT BRIAN on ABC, which couldn't find any kind of audience last season, finished second in the time period last night with 8.8 million viewers.

On the basis of this, I'm guessing NBC will not renew STUDIO 60 past its original 13 episodes.

It was announced yesterday that NBC would not take ER off the air for an extended hiatus and return it in the spring. The show will play the entire season with new episodes and reruns like other shows.

THE BLACK DONNALLYS, which was going into ER's spot, now has no home, and I'm guessing NBC will put it in the Monday at 10 timeslot.

BTW, DEAL OR NO DEAL won its time period at 8 with no problem, and HEROES also held up to the ratings levels of its other episodes.

From George:Oh yes I can!!  I’m so happy Ebonie is safe inside the condo. :D

Thanks!  I hadn't thought about the stretch collar, but I will definitely get one.

DR MBarnum, you mentioned that you had some Raymond Scott CD's. You might love this new compilation, which includes not only 24 versions of "Powerhouse", but numerous other covers.

There are about 18 songs performed by the RS Quintette, and each song is followed by at least one cover from another artist...all wrapped up in Irwin Chusid's beautiful packaging and liner notes.

A piece of trivia: Raymond Scott's son is also an editor. He worked on a lot of great stuff, including "Hair" and "Woodstock". He was also one of the editors on "Remember WENN". Stanley and I were the editors being considered for an immense Joseph Papp documentary. I would have had to work up in NY for at least a year (whiuch wouldn't be all bad) but I couldn't bear the thought of being away from my beloved for so long.

It turned out that Stanley was the perfect guy for the job. Not only did he have the home court adantage, so they wouldn't have to pay to put him up, (the filmmaker was actually going to give up her apartment to me and move in with a friend) but also his family knew Joseph Papp personally.

The project ultimately stalled for several reasons, but I hope it will be finished one day. Papp had 3 full-time archivists on staff and there's a mind-numbing amount of material available---beautiful footage, too!

I always do head counts before I leave the house, but apparently I forgot to do that this morning. When I came home I couldn't find Boo, I called and called and then I heard her howl...so I looked around opened doors and finally saw a little white paw sticking out from under the coat closet door.
Poor thing she'd been locked in there all day long.

It didn't take long before she ran to the litter box, then I made her a big dinner and gave her some cat nip. She's fine and my guilt has been taken care of.

DR MattH that surprises me that NBC would not renew STUDIO 60 (your speculation).  I think people will be quite mad if they don't do it.  It's bad enough that the networks take off many new shows if they have even one bad week. But this is a good show, with a good cast and a decent audience.

I just watched the Dancing With the Stars interview with Sara Evans.  It was sort of missing a bit of info (since it was taped days ago).  She just mentioned that she filed for divorce. And they implied about some stuff found on her husband's computer. But today on the entertainment shows her nanny was all over the news apparently denying having an affair with sara's hubby (i guess that is something sara said happened). But there was no mention of that in sara's interview.

DR Cillaliz (and anyone else who still watches). Who are your favorites now?

I think mario is by far the best dancer. He truly is like a professional. BUt i really hope joey and monique don't go home.

The biggest problem with Studio 60 is that it simply does not match it's lead-in in any way.  It is too real, while Heroes is total fantasy, and for audiences to switch from one to the other, even if they like both shows, is asking quite a lot.

Heck, I like both shows, but I've been asking der B to DVR Studio 60 while I head to bed.

I must be in the minority - I simply don't watch that much television these days.  Heroes, Studio 60, Lost, Ugly Betty, Doctor Who.  Five shows that I consider "must see."  And it won't kill me if I miss one or two on occasion.

I've got books to read.  DVDs to watch.  Work and cooking to do.  Doggies to hug.

(Oh, esteemed BK - your tome, How to Write a Dirty Book, is currently on der Brucer's night table.  Good news - he does not have a notebook next to it, listing typos.)

Today is a sad day for our country. The new military tribunal law that was signed today gives the President the power to declare anyone - US Citizen or not - an enemy combatant and you no longer have any right to access the court to challenge being locked up in jail and no right to counsel.  So, be careful about pissing off the President. One of the great things about these episodes is that there are deleted scenes for every episode, but they were deleted for time, not because they weren't funny. Watching the deleted scenes is like having another entire episode for every episode that actually aired. I can't believe all the funny stuff that never made it to air. I was howling.

You're not the only one!  Someday, I'll make it back to NYC!! :D

One more step in this administration's nazification of this country.

I really do not like to talk politics, but in this case, I must say that I couldn't agree more strongly.

And for saying this, I fully expect someone to be knocking on my door tonight so I can answer some questions.

Anyway, the three OFFICE episodes I watched invilved "The Dundies" (the office awards night), "Sexual Harrassment," and "Office Olympics." All terrifically funny and endearing.

But getting caught up in those OFFICE episodes meant I didn't get to watch the show OLD CHRISTINE tonight. I'll get to it tomorrow.

Well, I don't have any show to watch until 10:00 PM, so I'm going to Target to buy myself a big wall clock to go over my fireplace.  My realtor gave me a $25 gift card as a thank you for being her very first solo client!  So, I'm going to spend it!  I'll be back later. :)

LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT had Rip Torn as the guest star and a plot sort of borrowed from STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Good show.

nip/tuck had ROsie O'Donnell back as the Powerball winner, this time needing a new ear to replace one sliced off in a jewelry robbery.

And I read on the internet today that FX is spinning off this character in a new series to be filmed in NYC so she can continue on THE VIEW.

And, it appears a majority of the Supreme Court will uphold the law if it comes to them.

I think I will move ot Canada... Too much power in the hands of the president and the military

Back from dinner/meeting, which was endless but got a lot done.

elmore, I won't have time to burn a CD before I leave (I will if I can), but if you have a blank CDR I can do one whilst I'm there.  However, I don't know that it will do you much good - I don't love what the pianist is doing - several wrong chords and voicings, and strange tempos - we were just moving quickly and I didn't stop to nitpick with him.

Sad when a president indirectly declares war on his own people.

MattH -  Important point about the L&O:CI episode's STRANGERS ON A TRAIN connection is that

SPOILER

they get around clearly borrowing from STRANGERS ON A TRAIN by acknowledging the "debt"  to the film.  Very clever writer(s).  It sort of became a tribute to the film.

Over the course of a nine months production period, they just couldn't deal with the ego, demands, and unpredictable behavior.

Sounds like normal fetal development to me.
