Well, you've read the notes, the notes were beckoning, and now it is time for you to post until the beckoning cows come home.

Dear Esteemed BK --

All good thoughts, vibes, and long-distance hugs to you as you embark on your journey.  Fly smoothly and safely, and have a very successful weekend.

Oh, and big congratulations on getting a good sound Lady for The Brain.  I can't start to list how many productions I've seen in the last 8 years that were really hurt by bad sound.  And most of the time, it took the form of just being way louder than the room or the material needed.

We are really looking forward to the opening of The Brain :)  :)

I just read that the great Anna Russell died.  I've been a fan of hers since the age of 8, when she was the voice of the witch in a stop-motion film of HANSEL AND GRETEL,  Anna was camp before Susan Sontag ever put the word into the media.

I'm here posting live from LAX.  As always, I find it absolutely astonishing how many people were here at five-thirty.  Unbelievably crowded and the security lines especially slow.  They did take my little one ounce shaving cream, my two ounce toothpaste, and my three ounce moisturizer - I mean, honestly, that is just so lame it's not even funny.  If I'd had them in a plastic bag I could have kept them.  Now, I ask you, what is the difference in terms of their contents whether they're in a plastic bag or a leather toiletries case?  I'm all for security, but in this particular instance they are being really, really idiotic, especially in light of what they've been told by experts.  Of course, I could go re-purchase said stuff at their own airport store - THAT would be just fine, only I will not give them my money - I'll just re-buy them in NY, I suppose.

I shall now be on my way to the airport.
Glad to see you arose at that ungoldly hour! Did FJL give you a back-up wake-up jinlge of the telephonic device?

I hope you have a safe flight, BK, with no delays and you can catch some zzz's on the plane.
Title: Re:THE BECKONING BED
Post by: bk on October 19, 2006, 05:56:21 AM
I am sitting in the President's Club thanks to FJL - it's crowded here, too, and everywhere I look are men and women stuffing their gaping maws with every manner of sweet roll (some have three or four on their plates) along with endless coffee and orange juice.  Then, they'll do the same on the plane and, one presumes, the same when they get into Newark/NY.  If I did that I'd weigh - well, I'd weigh what I weighed earlier this year.

Maybe it's a plot by the airport to make you buy toiletries there. At FOUR TIMES THE PRICE!

Did FJL give you a backup jingle of the telephonic device? Other DR's are known to provide this service for our west coast brethern and sisteren. (Not to be confused with the cistern, which is often empty on a Saturday night. Now that's Trouble, my friend!)

I told FJL he was off the hook, so to speak.

Interesting factoids re our sound person - there was some shock about how much she and the mics and her assistant were going to cost, and I don't blame them for being shocked.  But, the problem is, when you're in a big theater you can no longer get along without a sound designer, body mics, and a good sound board.  She told me she's doing a show at Hamilton High (my alma mater) where there using twenty-nine body mics.  I mean, that just boggles my mind.  Hollywood High used a like amount on their production of Tommy.  I mean, when high schools are doing that, then what else can you do but bite the bullet and do it, too.  And I'm making it easy on them - nine body mics for the principals, and then she'll use shotgun mics and hanging mics for everything else, as well as the band mics.

Thursday morning greetings!  Today's a vacation day for me, so I got a nice sleep-in until almost 8am.  Off to have my haircut, then to a luncheon with my DH, and my book group later this evening.

Here's the Cincinnati Enquirer review of

Monty Python's Spamalot (http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061018/ENT/310180001/1025/LIFE)

which we'll see a week from Sunday.  It mentions Rick Holmes - could that be the same Richard Holmes whose performances we used to enjoy in the now-defunct Whitewater/Sorg Opera productions?  I've tried to sort this out on the internet, but just get more confused.

Things are the same here in Atlanta. Depending on what you read/who you talk to, rush hour traffic is as bad, or worse than LA. We don't have a grid like LA. We have to cross the Chattahoochee River, so there are only a few big roads we can take into town and they become very congested.

All the more reason to move closer!

Hi DR Larry......I was sad to read your notice about Anna Russell.  She came through Phoenix on her last national tour, and I learned an interesting fact.  After the show, we went backstage and it turned out that her accompanist had some of my recordings, and he introduced Kerry and I to her.  She visited with us for about 20 minutes, and told me that her very first accompanist had been the organist in their local theatre in Canada where she lived.  She was warm, charming, fun to visit with, and I'm glad we got to meet face to face.

I forgot to mention the two NBC comedies that I watched last night.

30 ROCK laid another egg with me apart from Alec Baldwin who really is the whole show. TIne Fey and Tracy Morgan just push too hard and aren't funny, and the show is sadly wasting Jane Krakowski's gifts. A shame.

I suspect this will be the last episode of the show that I watch.

Didn't like 20 MORE YEARS either. Both John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor are overacting like crazy, mugging, shouting their lines, and it's not funny either, more desperate than anything else. Last time with this one too, I suspect.

We're getting that SPAMALOT tour at the end of November. The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center was one of the producers of SPAMALOT, and the Tony they won as part of the production team is happily on display at the theater.

Funny, but when the tour gets here, it won't be produced at the Blumenthal but at the older Ovens Auditorium instead.

The barley soup is great!  My favorite meal is half a reuben, a bowl of barley soup, part of the huge potato pancake (I just eat the crispy edges), some kraut, some pickles, and a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda.  DH Richard remembers when Izzy Kadetz yelled at you about what you ordered, but he was gone before I started going to his establishment.  I'll bet DRs Elmore and Charles Pogue remember him, too.

ANd last night' DANCING WITH THE STARS results - predictable in light of Evans' leaving.

And I still say put Jerry Springer out of his misery and just take the man off. He couldn't look more miserable if he was in a stockade. I don't know why he took the gig in the first place other than maybe hoping it'd thrust him in the spotlight for a week or two, get the ratings for his own show back up, and then he could leave.

DR Ginny, I love Michael Siberry!  I don't know him personally, but I saw him in Peter Hall's production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE with Dustin Hoffman, Nathaniel Parker  and Leigh Lawson.  My memory is that he played Gratiano.  I helped Dustin with research on the play and got a lovely gift from his office.  This production is how I met Ben Browder who later became a TV star on FARSCAPE.

Michael Siberry, if I remember correctly, played Nicholas Nickleby when the RSC brought the 8-hour production back to Broadway.  He's quite funny in the Jeeves & Wooster series with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.

RANT (in several parts) ALERT:

Several days ago, I had called my bank and told them that I moved and needed to change my address.  Fine...the person took my information and made the change.  A couple of days ago, I ordered some DVDs from deepdiscountdvd.com because they were having a buy-one-get-one-free sale!!  Well, I got an e-mail last night saying that one of my orders (only one??  I placed two separate orders!) was cancelled "because we were unable to verify the billing address with the credit card used....This address does not match with the credit card used." >:(
Title: Re:THE BECKONING BED
Post by: George on October 19, 2006, 10:00:03 AM
It turns out that changing my address with the credit union isn't enough.  There is some other banking entity that has to get my new address and that still won't happen for another 24 hours!!  DAMN THEM!  DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!!  I missed out on a free DVD set (potentially two sets) because when I called to change my address at my credit union, they didn't tell me that it would take several days and that I shouldn't use my debit card.  I would've held off changing my address so that I could order these now.
Title: Re:THE BECKONING BED
Post by: George on October 19, 2006, 10:00:40 AM
And finally...

The other order, thankfully, is still "In Process" so that hasn't cancelled, yet.  Maybe it'll hang on long enough that the address change will kick in.  The consolation is that the cancelled order was totally an impulsive buy because of the sale.  The still-active order is for season four of both "Ellen" and "The Kids In the Hall," and since I have all the previous seasons, this is a real good deal.  I really hope that these doesn't cancel. ::)

DR George, I understand your frustration too well.  I've been waiting to get my flight booked to LA since yesterday, when the latest wire payment from the Institute should have come through.  We invocie Monday, pay happens usually Wednesday or Thursday, sometimes Tuesday.  PHI is totally inconsistent about it and completely unsympathetic.  I may lose a good sale on airfares because of their irresponsibility.  It isn't as if we're new workers for them:  we've been working for them nearly 6 years now!  Oy.

Good Afternoon!

bk - Hmmm... I guess LAX doesn't have an arrangement with Zip-Loc... At DCA and Dulles, they give out plastic baggies so that people can separate them before they go through the scanner.  -They even did that in Ft. Lauderdale when I flew out of there last week.  Heck, I'd rather keep a gross of plastic bags on hand rather than having to deal with cartons full of discarded toiletries.  Oh, the waste!

As for deli favorites - I'm a chopped liver fan too, but I prefer mine with not too much chopped egg in it.

There was a place called the New York Deli in Richmond that closed about two years ago.  It was pretty good - they even flew in bagels and bialys from H&H every other day.  My favorite thing to order there was a side of Liptauer Cheese with a couple of slices of rye.  Now that was a hearty meal!

DRs elmore and charles pogue,
I also like Michael Siberry. I don't recall him from Jeeves and Wooster, though. I wasn't familiar with him in those days, which would explain it.

DH Richard and I have returned from the retired teachers' luncheon.  The speaker from Graeter's is a chocolatier, so she talked about their candies, not their ice cream (although she confirmed my suspicion that they use their own chocolate chunks in their chip ice cream flavors).  We each received four chocolates:  a buttercream, a butterscotch caramel, a honeycomb chip, and a coffee truffle.  Richard gave me his coffee truffle and took my honeycomb chip in return.

Having a nice, lazy day here, a day off from work.  I was up earlier (the doggies wanted their first breakfast), then went back to bed and woke up again much later (and the doggies had a second breakfast), and I may take a nap later still.

I hope someone in NYC can loan our esteemed BK an umbrella - looks like rain is scheduled for tomorrow.

Thanks for the insights.  DH Richard and DS Rob (especially DS) are great fans of Farscape.  Rob will be thrilled to learn that you know Crichton  ;)

I'm in New York, New York so start spreadin' the news.   We arrived right on time, my car was there in five minutes, and the ride into the city, unlike three weeks ago, was amazing - twenty-five minutes from Newark to the hotel. and not a lick of traffic.  What's amazing is that it's a Thursday - last time I came in on a Sunday at the same time - wouldn't you think THAT would be the easy traffic day?

I'm very happy with my hotel room, other than the fact that their high speed Internet doesn't like Safari - AOL works perfectly, but when you open Safari it tries to redirect you a million times to take you to your home page and you never get there - also, I can't even get to websites via Safari.

It is not available through the normal distribution channels (or Netflix), but Jim at videovault.com was kind enough to do some hunting, located a copy, and procured it for his store. Nice film. Quite moving. For those interested, it is the story of a champion swimmer in India who has AIDS. Much higher quality than the little bit of Bollywood I had seen. VideoVault does mail-order.

It's from the NBC TV series HEROES. The cheerleader character is capable of recovering from any injury, and with the end of the world predicted, her ability to regenerate is going to be a key in saving the world. (All this is speculation, of course.)

Also read that actor T. R. Knight who plays the straight surgeon George O'Malley on GREy'S ANATOMY has come out as a gay man.

I'm guessing this was provoked by actor Isiah Washington calling him  the gay "f-word" on the set the other day which resulted in the scuffle between Washington and Patrick Dempsey which was front page entertainment news last week. (Dempsey was defending his friend from the verbal slam.)

Until tonight! ;D

Does anyone know who really sings the beautiful "Cheer Up, Charlie" from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (The first version!)

DR MattH?....

I just don't believe that the actress from the film, Diane Sowle, does the singing, even more since that sweet voice sounds like Shelby Flint to me!

Just a question! Thank you!

...MusicGuy, I'm in the Hilton Garden on Eight between 48th and 49th.  Hilton took this place over last year and have completely renovated it.  I, of course, can't remember what it was (can anyone?) but it was fairly cheesy prior to this.  I'm very picky about hotels and I'm more than happy here.

BK, was it Ramada Inn?  I have a Hagstrom map of Midtown that I bought my first time in NYC (1967) and it shows a RI on the east side of 8th between 48th & 49th.

I'm back from my book group, where we had were served a yummilicious cranberry upside-down cake.

That near quote, DRVIXMOM - as referenced by DR TCB -  was from TEA & SYMPATHY.

Thanks for the link DR RLP....going back now to read Tim Gunn's interview.

Is Michael Siberry related to Jane Siberry, the Candian singer? (Seems like an unusual name for two singers to share.)

Back from a lovelier than lovely time at Joe Allen.  We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more we laughed again.  We dished the dirt and we dirted the dish.  We ate food, too.  Elmore was there, my assistant Jonathan was there, our very own td and Evil Twin were there and it was all just too too.

TPunk, I would LOVE to see you - are you sure you can't make dinner tomorrow night?  Because it's just a few people we're going out to eat.  You could even show up late, if it's a time problem.  Or, we could go to Joe Allen later tomorrow night.

I hurried home to be the first to post but I forgot that BK was staying a block from Joe Allen;s.  It was indeed two and a half hours of mirth and celebrities galore, all my latest questions are answered on "The Brain," and it was great to see our DR td again, Bruce's assistant Jonathan, and former DR Evil Twin, who should come back to us.

Our host, the sparkling effervescent BK, was in usual top form, and  tales were told and mud was flung.

Matt did you hear about the big shakeups at NBC?

Do you know if they are going to replay the first few episodes. I missed them due to the last episodes of project runway.  I've seen approximately 1 1/2 episodes of this show and I think I'd like to add it to my repitoire.

I haven't read of a marathon on ABC, but perhaps they've been scheduled for ABC Family or are the first episodes still available to be seen on-line (if you have a broadband connection). Might be worth doing a search because the show really is something special.

One of the ways I heard the story about the GREY'S ANATOMY scuffle is that Washington called Knight a "b*tch" as opposed to the gay "f" word.

Yes, I did read about the firings and changes in venue for MSNBC. I also read something kind of ominous. NBC isn't interested in producing dramas or comedies for showing in the 8 p.m. hour any more.

So, I guess we will be in for a raft of game shows and reality shows until someone new takes over and realizes how nutty that idea is.

I watched more OFFICE episodes from the DVD set tonight plus the cut footage which once again proved just as funny as what made it to air. The two episodes I watched involved "The Client," a school district representative taken out to dinner by Michael and Jan while trying to persuade him to buy paper from their company.

The other involved performance reviews of the various staff.

All very funny outings for the show.

I was surprised to read that. I knew NBC has been in troble for years. Take a look at their daytime line up and that has been messed up for years. Days was once well written but it has been destroyed at the hands of James E. Reilly. His show Passions is an abomination.

TIIC is a MESS!!

I have heard Megan Mullally's show is not doing well either.

GREY'S ANATOMY had wonderful stories involving the regulars and the toxic fallout from the death of Denny Duquette. And I was delighted with Izzy's decision about work though the check business was a nutty decision. That kind of money could be drawing KILLER interest that she could have fun with without touching the principal. Get that woman a financial adviser stat!

Oh, sure. I have the DVDs for both "seasons" or series as they call it. Hilarious but much darker and more unforgiving than the Americanized version.

CSI had a pretty obvious murder case tonight involving a woman seemingly crucified in a church. Once the small group of suspects was identified, spotting the murderer didn't take much thought. The final twist put the capper on the story, and it was poignant.

I enjoyed HAIRSPRAY tonight. The place was packed and the audience loved it.  Having seen the original cast and the set on Broadway, I can really tell the difference (especiallyin the set), but they did a good job.  They could have used BKs sounds person, though. There were times it was very difficult to hear the vocal over the orchestra and I have pretty good hearing
