Well, you've read the notes, the notes were noteworthy, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently on the town and painting the town red (with some yellow highlights).

A Google search defines kibosh as "a checking or restraining element."  TCB may have a field day with that definition.

DVD: "A Touch of Greatness" Any teachers in this communtiy should see this. You can have a good sampling of it here:
http://www.firstrunfeatures.com
Go to "trailers" and it's toward the bottom of the page.
The beautiful B&W footage was shot by Robert Downey Sr. Absolutely inspiring.

CD: Dance mix of Guy Haines, Johnny Mercer and Randy Newman (I will be seeing him tomorrow night with members of his community!)

Bed: 2 cats, waiting patiently.  Good night...see y'all on the morrow.

How is Edisaurus doing on her book reading?

As I mentioned, I won't have much reading time until after Randy Newman leaves! There are lots of people in town who demand entertaining. And I've been painting at the new house the entire day. I do get to read HHW tonight, though because I can flip to it while I am rendering effects. Thank goodness for multiprocessing!

Even just reading the first few chapters of BK---which as I type that brings me to realize what I'm sure everyone else already knows: that we know someone else with those same initials!

Now I know: Why "The Fly" is the perfect name for Pogue.
What means "What is it, fish?"
and other catch phrases echoed on this site. I am glad I came to the site first---there is so much more resonance to what I"m reading. Can't wait to have more time to devote to it!

What a pleasure to have finally met up with the esteemed BK, whose presence would lighten up the dimmest dining experience!  As stated, it was a dishy, delicious evening at Joe Allen. . .sadly, some people left too soon, for as quickly as the raindrops fell and went away, who should come strolling down the block to join Georgia Engel at her table but Sutton Foster AND Liza Minnelli!  Talk about seeing stars, and talk about needing hipboots ;-)
No other stars appeared, but the shining Jonathan, elmoore, EvilTwin and BK were stars enough!

Good morning to all!

It's been a very long week.  I haven't felt good and was so tired I was going to bed almost as soon as I got home.

I had to go have some bloodwork done yesterday.  I must say that I am getting quite tired of being poked with a needle.  :(

I decided to not interview for that job afterall.  It's hard to explain all of the reasons but mostly it's because I have a very understanding boss when it comes to what is going on with Mom and I would hate to take the chance on a new boss that would be ugly about the times I have to miss work.

Well another busy week with work has about come and gone. They definitely cannot due without me at this place. I get in early and leave late and I am soooo tired when I get home I eat and go to sleep right away. So after today I will claim my life back.

No special movies planned this weekend, but I think I will listen to, in honor of this weekend, the song stylings of Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley (Their duet albums and Skinner's solo album)

The rest of the weekend I pledge I will finish reading the rest of the short stories by BK.

No changes on the media check front for me.

But der Brucer spotted my copy of The Omnivore's Dilemma on the coffee table, and picked it up so he could pick it apart.  He was expecting some extremely leftist extremist rant, and instead found what he read interesting, informative, and not a rant in the least.

I awoke with a sore lower back, so I had to abandon my workout this morning. I didn't want to put a strain on parts of the anatomy that were already stiff. Instead, I got on my sofa which has heat and massage built in, and let it work on me for half an hour. Later this morning, a hot shower should also ease some of the soreness.

I don't know where the pain came from. I don't remember doing anything to put any undue stress on my back. I guess it's just the rigors of old age creeping up on me.

DR Edi --- Your question about "What is it, fish?"  is very understandable.  But it will become clear as you keep reading into the Benjamin books.  You will meet Grandpa Gelfinbaum.......... oy !

Also, I find that "What is it, fish?"  becomes a very zen-like way of dealing with unexpected bumps and surprises along the way.

When I was getting massaged, I did watch a couple of things recorded last night. First up was SMALLVILLE which featured an exciting introduction to the world of the Green Arrow, and Clark's first proposal to start using his powers for something other than safeguarding his friends and family. I'm really enjoying Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on the show this season. And in HD, the show has an almost movie-like grandeur to it.

I don't think I put the assistant in the book - if you're speaking about the Brian character, it's modeled after someone else.  Of course, the book is completely fiction, but we writers do like to use people we know as models.

Last night I let myself enjoy yet another of the short stories in "How to write a dirty book," and once again it was so much fun to be transported to the Hollywood Blvd. that I knew and walked on around 1959 to 1967.

With a short story collection, I almost never sit down and read everything through.  I prefer to enjoy the stories as a treat in the evening, so I just read one at a time.  Last night I went on a fun tour with "The Book Scout."

I have been surprised by the wide range of emotions and topics covered so far in the stories I have finished.  I think I somehow got the impression that the whole tone of the book was going to be very light, but there have been a couple of shockers along the way.

I was genuinely upset and disturbed by the content of "Your Worst Nightmare," not because it wasn't well put together, but because it was too real.  For anyone who has had to listen to the vile ugly rantings of people who are obsessed with either racial issues, anti-semitism, or homophobia, it can be understood as to why the old gentleman would choose the course of action that he did.

What made me feel so badly about myself, was that I wanted him to pull the trigger.

But I have also had the pleasure of reading the very unexpected twists and outcome of "How to write a dirty book,"  and I thoroughly enjoyed the story about "Maddie."

I also have a new favorite character name now -- Wardell Bisbayne !

Sorry for the long rant......... I just think that this short story collection is a wonderful little gem.  Thank you BK.

Just before I left, our main desktop computer went to Silicon Heaven (a Red Dwarf reference) and I lost my email address book. I checked email while on my trip, but I didn't log onto our site, since I was a guest in someone's home and didn't feel comfortable spending the time catching up. My Virgin purchase was an import CD of Dave Brubeck's Bossa Nova album

Dave! I have loved Dave since I was a wee tot!

When I was in college, we performed "The Gates of Justice" with a combined force of the Men's Glee Club, the Full Chorus, the Women's Chorus...about 400 voices, for public television. The piece required a small 16 voice chorale to sing certain sections. I somehow found the courage to audition for this (I wasn't a great singer but after all, it was DAVE!) and was chosen for the "small group". What a treat to sing this with Dave and his 3 sons. I met the whole family and ended up becoming friends with Darius, who came back to visit a few times.

Dave was one of the nicest people I've ever met---totally unpretentious and sweet. Really, the whole family was adorable.

(Bending over as if to pick something up...)  "Oooh...did I just drop a name?"   ;)

After we formed this small group, we realized that a group of that size was useful for touring so we went on many nice trips to ensemble festivals around the southeast. It was the only thing I missed when I ditched music school for film school.

I hope that's a comment about the "content" rather than the physical tapes!   :)

Thanks very much, Larry, for the link to the Project Runway interviews with the finalists and Tim Gunn.  That anecdote about Vincent truly cements an impression I had that he's totally nuts.

I've long been wary of his glittering eyes and all-too-easy piano-key smile...and that facility for ignoring the pointed question and delivering an entree for garnering praise from self-delusional leading questions.

He would make an AWESOME subject for a book one day.  One that will probably be filed under case studies of the criminally insane.

One thing about Laura's remark about Angela being complicated:  I think she totally missed the mark on Angela.  Angela isn't complicated.  Angela is simplistic.  Because of that, Angela complicates issues, but is rather transparent, IMO.

I have images flashing through my head of that "student" nurse on "Will and Grace" who was going to draw blood at Karen's request.

I hope that's a comment about the "content" rather than the physical tapes!   :)

Thanks very much, Larry, for the link to the Project Runway interviews with the finalists and Tim Gunn.  That anecdote about Vincent truly cements an impression I had that he's totally nuts.

DR RonPulliam, it was all about content!

I also loved the footage of Vincent kissing ass to the French designer - I'm soooo couture conscious! oy - after gluing his gown together.  I bet she was thinking all the time he was raving about how classy she was, "Clueless and classless," only in Francais!

I had a neat thing happen in the Theatre collection today.  My librarian friend Bob made a reference to a library website for historic newspapers.  I had no knowledge of this, but now I am in the know.

At any rate, an investigation of the Chicago Tribune today gave me the final ruling on the July 1903 plagiarism suit filed by Mrs Alice Riley of Evanston, IL against Fred Hamlin, producer, Julian Mitchell, director, Glen MacDonough, librettist, and Victor Herbert, composer,of BABES IN TOYLAND.  I've had law clerks in Chicago looking for 4 years now on the verdict, and I found it at the library!

I watched three OFFICE episodes from the DVD set to finish off the second disc in the set. The episodes were among the best of last season: the Christmas episode (in which Secret Santa evolved into a Chinese Swap party because Michael got stuck with a pot holder), the "Booze Cruise" where Pam and Roy finally announced their wedding date, and "The Injury" where Michael burned his foot on a George Foreman grill and spent the day as an whining invalid.

All hysterical.

Then I watched last night's episode of THE OFFICE where Dwight took Ryan on his first sales venture. Except it was more like a fraternity initiation that Ryan quickly soured on. Also, Jim and Pam talked for the first time this season, and it was so sweet and wonderful, and over much too quickly.

My Warners boxed set of Movie Masterpieces didn't come today, so I have THE MALTESE FALCON cued up in the player for viewing when I go back down.

All the reviews I've read have raved about how much better this transfer is from the original DVD release, but though I haven't watched that one in a long time, I was very favorably impressed with it. I will have to do some comparisons after I watch the movie tonight.

Great link about Project Runway, Elmore. Candid stuff. Early on in the show, I liked Vincent. He seemed like a nut, but I thought he was a character. But it became clear that first, he had no talent to back up his ideas, and second, he was out of his mind in an ugly way.

Keith also seems out of touch with reality, in addition to being a cheater.

The EW write-up sums up the finale perfectly. Though it may be a flaw in the show to say that though I thought in the last two seasons Chloe and Jeffrey were the best choices at the end, the ultimate feeling is quite anti-climactic.

Ratings news:

PROJECT RUNWAY finale scored the biggest ratings in its history and in the history of Bravo on WEdnesday night. 5.4 million viewers tuned in far outranking any other cable channel in that hour of prime time.

Last night, UGLY BETTY held its ratings up to its seasonal levels, and GREY'S ANATOMY once again finished ahead of CSI in total viewers and in the age 18-49 category (by a much wider margin than the last few weeks).

There is a sublime exhibit going on at the Met right now, which I simply had to see: a collection containing works by Renoir, Cezanne, Gaugin and van Gogh to name but a few. I was also quite taken with the medieval armor & artifacts as well as a few pieces of "modern art."  I have a chair at home exactly like one on exhibit, so, I guess I am now officially a collector.   :-\

Back from the rehearsal.  The girls are in glorious voice and the program is very interesting and a lot of fun.  The band sounds great, too.  Alice's husband Shannon is on drums, and, since they live in LA, I hired him to play The Brain.  I had several opinions on matters musical which I voiced and which were received and taken in the positive spirit they were meant, and some adjustments were made.  I think it's going to be a fun show and I think with some sporadic editing of patter we might be able to fit everything on one CD.

Warlow, hauntingly ours again

Alison Barclay, arts editor

October 20, 2006 12:00am
Article from: Herald-Sun

ANTHONY Warlow will return as the lead in Phantom of the Opera, 15 years after his unexpectedly early exit from the role that made him famous.
The Phantom of the Opera -- now the best-selling musical in history -- will open at the Princess Theatre on July 28 next year.

It is the third time round in Melbourne for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which played to more than 1.5 million people during its premiere season in 1990-91, and 300,000 in 1997-78.

"When we decided to do Phantom again in Australia we wanted to try to recreate the magic of that first season," co-producer Tim McFarlane said yesterday.

"That meant the Princess Theatre and Anthony. Anthony has been away from a big show for a while now; we weren't having to persuade him too much.

"He is delighted to be coming back and reclaiming the role. For many people, he is the person they associate with Phantom, even though he was in the role for only a year.

"Internationally he was regarded as one of the greatest Phantoms. He is a terrific actor with a sublime voice."

Warlow, now performing with Opera Australia in Sydney in The Pirates of Penzance, would not comment. However, Mr McFarlane confirmed he and co-producer John Frost had signed the singer for a "limited" Melbourne season with the option of a national tour.

Just 29 when he first played the Phantom, Warlow, 45, has earned acclaim in music theatre and operettas such as The Man of La Mancha and, last year in Melbourne, HMS Pinafore.

The Phantom -- a tale of unrequited love played out backstage at the Paris Opera -- had its world premiere in London in 1986. It has played to 80 million people, grossed $4.2 billion and won more than 50 major awards.

Seven productions are playing worldwide; the one now in Singapore will transfer to Melbourne next year in 23 shipping containers and acquire an Australian cast. Auditions will be held in Melbourne and Sydney in December.

"The Phantom is the biggest box office grossing entertainment ever -- bigger than any film, any other show. Nothing remotely comes close to it," Mr McFarlane said.

"The numbers are interesting but really what they say is that this show has enduring appeal to lovers of music theatre."

In 1991 Phantom brought an estimated $200 million to Melbourne in the depths of a recession.

No, but close - it is the second Darrin Stephens, Mr Dick Sargent.  He was really the STAR of the movie although Pat Boone sings the title song and does some really funny bits in the show.

Not on video, but I am hoping sooner or later it shows.  Of course WB gives us A SUMMER PLACE now that Sandy and Troy can't do a commentary.  :P

Back from a lovelier than lovely repast which, I suppose, is better than a represent or refuture.  The food was spectacular - I had a caesar salad, fried chicken (ab fab), and we ordered mac and cheese for the table, and that, too, entered the pantheon of great mac and cheese.  I ate way too much food, but it WAS my only meal o' the day, so I guess I'm okay.  For dessert I had a peanut butter tart, which was also spectacular, to put it in the vernacular.  The restaurant was lovely, but the clientele young and heinously loud.  But, the evening was wonderful and it was grandly grand to see Ye Olde FJL and Skip again, and elmore, too.  We dished the dirt plenty, that much I'll tell you.

Skip's turning on the new dishwasher to wash away all the dish that was dished during dinner; I suspect an extra cycle may be needed to wash away such quantities of dish.

Actually, it was a truly delicious dinner, with lovely conversation, at one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants, but I'll agree that the noise tonight was heinous - and someone at the next table had a particulalry heinous (or is it hyena-ous) laugh.

A peanut butter tart???  What was her name?

To go along with the peanut butter tart, the menu also featured a fallen chocolate souffle.

Sorry! Always get my Dicks confused!
(I hope TCB's not reading this!! :D)

Spent the first part of my evening watching the new transfer of THE MALTESE FALCON. COuldn't be more silky clean and sharp. The movie still plays like gangbusters and represents career high spots for a good many people.

I'm wondering when Oscar voters marked their ballots for Mary Astor in THE GREAT LIE as Best Supporting Actress (and she is wonderful in that film), didn't also have her work in THE MALTESE FALCON on their minds. What a year 1941 was for her!

Fallen from grace?!

Ah, Grace WAS her name! ;)

I put in the old transfer of THE MALTESE FALCON to compare it with the new transfer. Oh, my what a difference! The old is sharp enough but has lots of specks and flecks in the image. The new one is pristine, as good a job as CASABLANCA in terms of getting rid of all the debris and making it look silky smooth.

A SILKY CLEAN TRANSFER is the title of my next book of human psychology! Yep!

Next, I put on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Having watched THE LITTLE MERMAID earlier in the week, I was anxious to revisit this one again after many years. Didn't quite get to the end of it (only got through "Human Again"), but I'll finish it tomorrow. Certainly did enjoy it again after such a long time away.

I think Michael Barnum's avitar is real sexy.

Next, I watched the second episode of the new game show 1 Vs. 100. Lots of fun seeing the questions and putting myself to the test. There was only one question tonight I would have missed.

LAW & ORDER based the case tonight on one of NBC's own ploys for programming: the DATELINE traps to catch sexual predators. Interesting case since it ended up being the producer of the show who was put on trial for murder.

Regarding Project Runaway I looked at my posting from last week and I was correct.

One of two scenarios stated that he would be allowed to participate but the shorts were out.

I did not mention the wigs because I didn't want to give too much away.

I am really glad that Jeffrey won and Laura ate his dust.

But it really is the way the show was edited that really showed here in such a awful light. Her own fault I guess. Didn't any one tell what she was doing?

Also everyone called her a b*tch but I really saw her more as an ugly name for a part of a woman's anatomy. Sorry to all the other women out there.

I would really love to see all the unaired footage.

Does anyone else here watch JERICHO? I am really enjoying it...even though the lead actor is a  bit annoying to me...and the "shaky" camera work on this weeks episode made me want to simply stop watching...it just seemed a bit too "now" and "hip" and was no necessary for the plot.

However it is nice to see a show with plenty of older actors/actresses in major roles and the whole idea of the program is pretty darn interesting...I think.

No, I don't. I will watch BONES in that timeslot when it returns from the baseball hiatus. And this was my last week to give 30 ROCK and TWENTY GOOD YEARS tryouts. They're not for me.

But I do think DR Ron Pulliam watches it, or at least watched the pilot. I remember reading his comments about it.

Tom Birkeland is the only tart I know.

I had a lovely lemon sole with fresh lima beans and - I think - gnocchi, also a lobster taco (yum yum!) and apple crisp with mapel ice cream.

I had a wonderful time with three excellent friends.  Or maybe an excellent time with three wonderful friends.

Hello!

I saw To Catch A Fire at the Egyptian and I highly reccomend it. It was nothing like the action flick they make it look like in the preview, it was thought provoking and interesting.

Brain rehursals start in two days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YAY!

In my VCR is Hocus Pocus, my cd player is happily holding Hairspray, and my I found Basic Instinct still in my DVD player!

Happy Halloween!

Good evening Drs and H/Ks.......

I just thought I'd pop in for a minute and wish everyone a pleasant night and wonderful dreams.  It's the end of a long day, and Sugar wants the bed turned down NOW !  She can get very pushy at times.  But she just puts on an even cuter expression, and she knows it will melt us.

DR Laura.......good news about your luggage!!

But not before I speak of the only frustration I have at this hotel - the Internet connection, which is tenuous at best and non-existent at worst.  It will be working fine, it will lose signal, and then nothing short of shutting down the computer will get you back online - it's losing synch, and it's very annoying - it's happened about six times today.  I just blew up at the front desk and they said they'd call the support people and try and do something about it or find out what's going on.  I doubt if anyone is there at this hour, so it will probably be in the morning.
