Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in some sort of fettle, hopefully fine, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they are trying to figure out exactly what a fettle is.

Folks in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington area:  Skip's show HERRINGBONE, which was done to a fare-thee-well-smash-hit run this past summer in Vancouver, WA, is returning for an addiitonal engagement at the same theater in Vancouver, WA from November 3 to Dceember 23.  Here's the address of the theater's website:

In case there are producer types reading this board, here are some reviews from HERRINGBONE's summer run.

Herringbone
REVIEWED BY ALISON HALLETT

I'd never heard of actor Taylor Askman before the Vancouver Arts Equity's production of Herringbone, but as I took my seat in the funky Main Street Theatre in downtown Vancouver, a drunken woman sitting in front of me assured me that the 22-year-old is "extremely talented." My first thought? He'd better be. Herringbone is a one-man show, which means that if that one man can't swing it, the audience is in for a long, painful night. Fortunately, Askman can swing it. Damn, can he swing it.

The shockingly talented Askman plays Herringbone's titular character, a tall, self-possessed vaudevillian with curly orange hair and a ratty (what else) herringbone suit. Herringbone is the host of this show, as well as the sole performer. His first number is the song "One of Those Years," as in, "Have you ever had 'one of those years?'" Herringbone has, and this play is about that year.

Before he was called Herringbone, he was called George. During the year in question, George is a precocious eight-year-old living in the Depression-era South. His family is dirt poor, and when George wins a speech competition, his parents use the money to enroll him in dance classes: They've heard that "child stars" can make good money in Los Angeles, and they're hoping that George might be their ticket out of poverty.

George takes dances lessons from a man called Chicken, formerly of the famed vaudeville act Chicken and Turtle. Lou, Chicken's former partner, is dead; while studying with Chicken, George becomes possessed by Lou's ghost, who seizes control of George's body and forces him to strangle Chicken. George's parents hit the road, fleeing the crime scene with the Lou-possessed George in tow.

The family makes their way to Hollywood, paying their way with money Lou makes performing in bars (in George's body, of course). Through it all, Lou and George share George's body in an awkward tug of war. While in Hollywood, Lou forces George to run away from his parents—an abrupt introduction to manhood.

George and Lou vie for possession of George's body, a struggle that comes to a disturbing head when Lou invites a woman back to their room and tries to seduce her. George is horrified (and the scene is horrifying), forcing the conflict between Lou and George to a climactic end.

This elaborate story is reenacted entirely by Herringbone: Herringbone is George, all grown up and in full mastery of his inner demons. As Herringbone tells his story, he moves seamlessly from one character to the next: from George's wide eyes and high-pitched stutter, to George's mother's lazy Southern drawl, to Lou's hoarse, raspy bark.

Whether you take this show at face value, as a tale of ghostly possession, or read it as a coming-of-age parable with Oedipal implications, there's no doubt that in the wrong hands Herringbone could be an unmitigated disaster:The script, simply, is a bitch. It's demanding, hectic, and thematically abstruse. There's no room for error; if even one character is anything less than distinct, narrative coherence would quickly vanish.

And as if multiple characters weren't enough to contend with, there's the song-and-dance angle as well. Lyricist Ellen Fitzhugh has penned a few gems, like "What's a Body to Do (with a Body)?" after Chicken is murdered, and pianist K.J. McElrath keeps admirable pace with the demands of Skip Kennon's score. Some of the songs involve two or three characters, requiring Askman to rifle through his repertoire of characters with dizzying speed.

Askman, though, endows each char acter with enough specific mannerisms that they are each easy to identify and distinguish from one another, but he never veers into caricature: Each character remains human, even the fiendish Lou. It's almost unsettling, how good he is; at times Askman, like George, seems possessed. He keeps it up even during the musical numbers: As with everything else he attempts during this production, Askman makes singing duets with himself seem easy.

Therein lines the real marvel of this show: Askman's ability to keep so many plates spinning at once. His curly red hair and smooth, clammy make-up invite comparisons to a clown, and like any good clown, he is a mimic, a cipher. His identity shifts and dissolves behind his enigmatic grease-painted face; Askman looks like Gene Wilder and sounds like Tim Curry, but the sum of his talents is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive performances I've seen.

One-man cast carries dark, funny 'Bone'

Monday, July 24, 2006
Review by HOLLY JOHNSON

Do vaudeville and the dark arts seem likely bedfellows?

They get along just fine in "Herringbone," a terrifying yet mesmerizing play by Tom Cone from the 1970s (later revised into a two-act musical).

It starts with an unsuspecting 8-year-old named George bound for Hollywood during the Depression, who takes stage lessons, finds he's pretty good at tap-dancing, and is suddenly inhabited by the spirit of a louche 35-year-old vaudevillian dwarf. He's so creepy, it's easy to see why his former show-biz partner knocked him off.

Horrific, mesmerizing and funny, the play once featured Joel Grey in an East Coast performance, and artistic director Llewellyn J. Rhoe of Arts Equity Inc. in Vancouver offers a riveting production, with new songs by composer Skip Kennon and lyricist Ellen Fitzbugh.

Taylor Askman, 22, who plays all the roles in this intimate yet hugely complex show, displays an amazing quicksilver talent as he serves up a cadre of characters. He possesses a face actors long for: a combination of cartoon character and classical statue. But it's his ability to sketch characters with depth and mercurial speed that stands out.

One minute he's Louise, George's arch, ambitious Southern mom; the next he's young George, with a tiny voice and bemused stare. The contrast is stark next to the gnarled, gravelly voiced dwarf Lou, who materializes unannounced. And then there's George's imperious, looming dad, Dot the giggly seductress, and adult George, the grave narrator. The characters seem to materialize from a sideshow in Askman's brain. He's a big talent, and Rhoe has obviously found a vehicle that gives him a big tent in which to move around.

The play is a brutal coming-of-age story with a nod to Kafka or Stephen King, and the musical numbers mesh perfectly. Musical accompaniment by musical director Kevin McElrath on piano is a pleasure to hear. The gaping set, a textured affair in black and red surfaces designed by Rhoe, echoes the maw of hell itself.

at Main Street Theatre, 606 Main St., Vancouver; $8-$23, 360-695-3770.

DR Francois ask yesterday who sang Cheer Up Charlie in Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory.

It was Diana Sowle

Well, Michael, I was just questioning that fact, for, with such a glorious voice, how come we don't know her as a singer?

And I was wondering if the ghost voice was not Shelby Flint...

Book Description
'Twas the Night before Christmas is a magical, musical adaptation of the well-known 19th-century rhyme, including parts for mice, children, toys, Santa Claus, reindeer and many more, all with amazing costumes. The well-written original songs, expandable cast list and incidental music provide opportunities for children to add dance and mime to their production.

About the Author
Matthew White (Hornsey, U.K.) performs regularly in West End musicals and is a highly regarded producer.

Susannah Pearse (London) has written songs for Everyone's Singing Lord.

Do any of the more informed readers have any knowledge of any of these folks?

It should be noted that the theater festival that der B was referring to in his posts above will be held at the Little Theater at Cape Henlopen High School.  Said HS is located in neighboring Lewes (pronounced Loo-iss), not in Rehoboth Beach.  But Lewes is a nice place, too.

And it's nice to know that our little nook and cranny of Delmarva has some kul-chah, beyond our restaurant scene.

(We just had the annual Jazz Fest last weekend, very successful, and coming in November will be the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival, which caused a controversy last year when a blue-nosed lady insisted that the whole thing be shut down because some of the films were gay themed and underaged children might be able to sneek in and watch terrible things happening on screen.  No, she hadn't actually seen any children doing such a thing - she hadn't attended any screenings herself, of course -  nor were there any reports of any children doing such a thing, but the mere thought that such a thing could happen got her fettle fluffed.)

I've never seen ACL. That is from the era where I never had any money to see live theatre, so I know nothing about the show, other than the songs. Are you going to kick me out of the community now?

I went to see Randy Newman with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra last night. A small group of us got together with him afterwards. I dragged along ones of the cellists, an old friend of mine. We told Randy about how I couldn't afford a ticket when he premiered the album "Good Old Boys" with the symphony over 30 years ago, with Uncle Emil conducting. My friend Paul just "happened" to let me know when the rehearsals were and which door to sneak in. He also let me know when to show up to sneak in after intermission. Ah...good times!

We all thought it was funny that here we all were again 30 years later, only this time I was on the fourth row with my cute little French boy.
(He's almost 40, but he started visiting me every year since he was in high school on an exhange program, so he's always been known by my friends as "My Little French Boy".)

DON"T RENT the movie. You still won't know anything about the show

Town Hall (http://the-townhall-nyc.org/pages/walls/founding.html) was not built as a theatre but as a meeting place. It's been used as a performing space and theatrical performances have taken place in Town Hall but the main function when it was built was to provide a place for lectures and discussions to educate the public. I'm sure our own DR Edisaurus knows about a meeting which was held at Town Hall on the second anniversary of the execution of Sacco & Vanzetti. It was held at the Hall when officials in Boston denied the use of Fanueil Hall for the event.

You can click on the link to find out all you ever wanted to know (and more) about Town Hall.

And it's true, there is really not a bad seat in the house. It's one of the places in New York which has amazing acoustics. The New York Cabaret Convention and the Broadway Unplugged concerts are held at Town Hall because singing without a microphone is easier to do when the acoustics are good.

When A CHORUS LINE the Movie came out, I told a friend that if he had never seen a CHORUS LINE on stage, he might have an OK time as long as he understood that he wasn't seeing the REAL show. For those of us intimately knowledgeable about the stage version, the movie was such a travesty that it hurt - a real lost opportunity.

I think the film can be marginally entertaining with no prior knowledge of what came first.

But then, I was so hungry for movie musicals back then (there were almost none) that I was probably easier on it than I should have been.

No, I didn't know that! I'm sure my partner Peter does, he's so much more familiar with the case than I am. (He's from Boston, too.)

I just heard today that we may be "opening out of town". We had planned to premiere the film at the IFC Center in NYC but the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, which I'm told is a very good venue, wants to screen it for a week the end of Jan./early Feb. which is earlier than we had planned to release it. So I think we're going to go for it. It will be connected to Human Rights Watch week, so it should draw a good crowd because of local interest.

We hope it will garner some good reviews to help us when we release it in NY a few weeks later.

I googled S&V and Town Hall and saw mention of this meeting in 1929. The same year, Andrés Segovia performed there. I used to go see Segovia whenever possible. So, yes, now I know I'm OLD!

Well, I might mosey on downstairs and have a Diet Coke in the little restaurant on the corner.  Of course, my assistant has some info that I need in order to pay people today, but I guess we'll deal with that whenever he decides to get out of bed.  He also has the hard drive we'll be backing up to - it will be very nice if he shows up at the theater with it.

Well, hooray for DR RP, and for me also....I finally (maybe) understand your banner that runs here.  I saw at least what the cheerleader looked like.  I saw only the end part of Heroes last night, but the cheerleader girl seemed to be avenging some snarky and evil behavior by a very handsome "jock" boy who took advantage of some of the girls.  I just have to assume that she has some magical way to stay alive after crashing their car??

Hello, everybody!

Everything I did to get my college degree-- class with the dreaded Dr. C., IAAAAWWOTD, Rhetoric (whatever that is), countless all-night term paper sessions, and a Humanities final exam that still gives me nightmares-- all that has qualified me to make minimum wage as a teacher's aide at a preschool. This is a lot easier than that postmodern/rhetorical/whatever stuff I was doing earlier. Last week we learned about the color red.

Watched a few more episodes of THE OFFICE on DVD, too. I hadn't seen the "Women's Consciousness Day" episode since it first aired, so it was hilarious to see it again. And as always, the scenes edited for time were every bit as amusing and delightful as what made the final air version.

NBC used to do expanded editions of their Thursday comedies which really were maybe one more minute of show and about eight more minutes of commercials. THE OFFICE could legitimately be an hour show with all this footage they have left over at the end of every one of these episodes.

I just found this on the BBC Radio 2 site; I'm sure DR Ben knows about the show that will be hosted live by Beverley Humphreys!

It's against the rules here, but I have downloaded Real Player and I'm listening to The Voice Of Musical Theater Contest right this very minute!

The Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre returns to the Welsh capital from 15th October - 5th November 2006, presenting an exciting range of shows and events celebrating the world’s most popular live art form - the musical.

The inaugural Festival took place in 2002 and plans are currently being put in place for the third Festival of Musical Theatre, which remains the only one of its kind in the world.

The Opening Gala at St. David’s Hall, Who Could Ask For Anything More' (15th October) will feature 300 local school children with musical stars from the West End who will perform a number from the school’s chosen musical. This event has become one of the most loved elements of the festival and provides a suitable curtain raiser to three weeks of festive fun.

One of the main themes of this year's Festival will be centenaries. David Heneker, the composer of, among others, Half a Sixpence and Charlie Girl, who spent his last years in West Wales, will be celebrated with a concert at the Sherman Theatre. The Symposium Day, following on from last year’s hugely successful event featuring Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim, will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Jule Styne, the East End boy made good in the USA with hit after hit including Gypsy, Funny Girl and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Joanne Benjamin, Chief Executive of the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre, is working with international producers to bring the Olivier Award-winning West End production of Guys & Dolls to the Wales Millennium Centre.

The 2006 Festival will start a new strand, which will continue in the future, of Forgotten Gems beginning with the UK premiere of Gershwin's Treasure Girl, presented in conjunction with the Ira and Leonore Gershwin estate.

There will also be a BBC Wales community concert, hosted by Beverley Humphreys, in which the audience is invited to sing along their favourite musical hits in the company of West End stars.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the first time, there will be a 24 hour Singathon in aid of BBC Children in Need which will feature audience members bidding to hear their favourite numbers (2nd - 3rd November).

Following their sold-out smash-hit production of Amazing Grace at the 2005 Festival, Wales Theatre Company returns with a new production of the much-loved Dylan Thomas short story, A Child's Christmas in Wales. This will be presented at the New Theatre (23rd - 28th October), adapted for the stage by Michael Bogdanov with music and lyrics by Jack Herrick, the leader of the Tony Award-winning Red Clay Ramblers.

The Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre competition will once again take place at the New Theatre (15th - 21st October). The competition has received a huge number of entries from professional performers around the world. Laura Michelle Kelly, winner of the first competition in 2000, went on to play the title role in Mary Poppins in the West End, for which she won an Olivier Award.  Managed by BBC Wales, the Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre will be featured extensively in a number of national and regional radio and television programmes. And, for the first time, the winner will perform in one of the Festival’s concerts. Alongside Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre, BBC New Talent will be hosting a similar talent scout for non-professional singers.

The third Global Search for New Musicals, has again received a high number of entries from around the world. This initiative aims to discover the best in new musical theatre writing and provides an arena for composers, lyricists and librettists to bring their work to the attention of producers, directors and the general public. The 2005 Festival showcases were a great success, applauded by the industry professionals who attended. Many of the shows presented have gone on to further production following their presentation in Cardiff. In 2005, there were 256 entries from 28 countries, three of which were performed at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival. The six chosen submissions in 2006 will be showcased at Chapter Arts Centre (3rd - 5th November). Other new musical highlights include an off-Broadway musical, I Sing, prior to its West End transfer.

Over the past two Festivals, more than 2000 young people have taken part in Festival events. As part of the Festival’s increasing educational programme, local secondary schools will stage well known musicals in theatres around the region including the renowned Bridgend Youth Theatre, Llanishen High School and Stanwell School. There will also be further series of masterclasses with world-renowned figures from the world of musical theatre. The Festival is also delighted that a new musical production of Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince will be premiered at the Sherman Theatre prior to an all-Wales tour.

After a successful series last year, the musicals quiz Showstoppers returns to BBC Radio Wales during the period of the Festival for an entertaining and lively showbiz quiz about musicals (produced by Torpedo). The six half hour shows will be presented by Mal Pope and the panellists for all teams made up of participants from productions in the Festival programme. Showstoppers will be recorded with an audience at Chapter Arts Centre at lunch times on Wednesday 18th, Thursday 19th and Friday 29th October.

The Festival has now firmly taken root in Cardiff, with more people taking part than ever before. Our next Festival promises to be a cavalcade of the best musical theatre from around the world, attracting the foremost practitioners, performers and commentators of this much loved genre.

the Festival that DR derBRUCER wrote about certainly looks interesting but it probably doesn't have anything to compare with DR CP in Steven Martin's UNDERPANTS.

I got season one of THE CHAMPIONS today for only $25.  I think I only saw the first season when it was aired for a time on NBC during my high school days.  William Gaunt and Stuart Damon....what's NOT to like?

Sorry to hear about Phyllis Kirk.  She was terrific in the tv series THE THIN MAN as Nora Charles to Peter Lawford's Nick!

I always thought she was the MOST sophisticated woman on TV....watched a couple of episodes and recognized that she was wearing some of Helen Rose's clothes that Sandra Dee had worn in THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE....recycle recycle recycle.....

I haven’t walked in 10 days!!  Now I’m not sure I have the energy too but I’m going to give it a try.

Perhaps a faith healer can help you walk again.

I knew underpants would bring dear reader Sandra back to us.  Now, what is with this lowly number of postings.  You're supposed to keep the home fries burning!

Excellent review, Pogue.

I've got to write the notes now and then get to bed, for I must wake up at five-thirty, just a few short hours from now.  I'll reveal all about the show in moments.

My computer is running great now.  When I was on the phone with the tech, I couldn't get the system to restore the easy way so he said he'd send all the disks for my software (which I think I should get anyway since I did pay for them when I bought the computer) while I was on hold I got it to work, but I decided not to tell him so I can get the disks for use after my warranty expires

Now I get the joy of reinstalling the additional software I've added and trying to resurrect my address book. So, if have emailed me in the past, could you send another one...just say hi or something..then I can add you to my email address.
