Well, you've read the notes, the notes were live, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're recording their new show, The Cows Come Home, Live From The Cow Palace.

Their first hit was "Cow Cow Boogie" of course!

Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner are not only great performers, but seem to be lovely people as well.  They stayed speaking with people until pretty much the very end of the party.

(I stayed until the end of the party, too, but that was just for my own enjoyment, though.  It was a lovely group of folks.)

I also attended a concert tonight which was held at the old town hall in Turner, just outside of Salem...the main act was

...and it was absolutely fantastic!!! The New Christy Minstrels only have 8 members now, but 6 of those 8 are the original people...and gosh but they sound great still!!!!

Mom mom went with me and her first comment when they came onstage was "Well, they don't look very new to me." LOL! But she loved them to and of course she knew all of there songs!

The opening act was a wonderful Northwest group called THE TRAIL BAND...and one of the singers in the band is Rindi Ross, former lead singer of QUARTERFLASH!

One of those original New Christy Minstrel members is singer Barry McGuire who later had a solo career and had a hit with the song EVE OF DESTRUCTION, which he sang tonight...that man has one heck of a voice...and he is funny as all get out! Really nice guy!

I had a chance to speak with lead singer Randy Sparks after the show. Very nice guy also. His wife is one of my favorite 50s actresses, and when he found out he gave me his phone number and told me to call her this week! LOL! So of course I will!

Here I am, live from the Newark airport - barely.  What a morning!  Last night, I called my car service and moved my pickup time to six, just because I'm a nervous traveler.  They confirmed everything.  I went downstairs at five to six - no car.  I called.  They told me I'd called at five-twenty-five and  cancelled the car.  I told them I wasn't even awake at five-twenty-five and that, no, I did not cancel the car.  They said they'd have a car to me in fifteen minutes - I said unacceptable and said I needed it there faster.  They said eight minutes.  Eight minutes later - no car.  I called back.  They told me I'd cancelled my reservation at five-twenty-five - I told them to stop the horse manure.  I told them if the car wasn't going to be there in two minutes I'd get a cab - they said get a cab.  I got a cab.  I got a driver who, while very fast, was very confused as to where Newark or New Jersey was (apparently they are doing construction and keep changing and/or moving the lane signs and he got totally screwed up).  He had to pull off the road twice.  I, naturally, being a nervous traveler, was not being my usual kind, sweet self.  I was, to put it kindly, freaking out.  He finally figured out what he was doing and we got to the airport at about six-fifty-five, but not before he almost took a wrong turn to the wrong building (happily, I was paying attention).  The difference between arriving at six-thirty and seven is enormous and the lines were unbelievable at security.  But, I got through without incident (except they did an extra special check on my CONVERSE SNEAKERS!).  I am now happily ensconced in the President's Club.  I had another conversation with James, the Dispatch Man from the car service, who was checking to see what really happened.  He confirmed that I'd changed my time from six-fifteen to six.  He said I'd called at five-twenty-five to cancel.  I told him I would personally come find him if he said that again, and that I did NOT call or cancel anything.  Then, he finally admitted that SOMEONE called to cancel a car and that the operator inadvertantly cancelled mine instead of whoever's.

And there you have it.  I am now trying to calm down so I can have a nice, peaceful flight.

Post by: bk on October 22, 2006, 04:29:00 AM
It's not too crowded in the President's Club - although, I admit to fleeing to a private cubicle quickly so I wouldn't have to watch people shoving rolls and bagels into their gaping hungry maws.

And in the South, too. Randy Newman did a second night with the Atlanta Symphony. We're very lucky because it's one of the few dates on his tour when he performs with an orchestra. We talked about all the different times he's performed with the ASO---he remembered every concert and every conductor. Very impressive! He said that the ASO had really come a long way since he first performed with them over 30 years ago. He has some great new political songs coming out and may record his next album in Jan.

Earlier in the day, I chauffered around one of Randy's friends who is a songwriter in Nashville. He had arranged for us to tour Ireland last year with the Dady Brothers, two Irish musicians. I took a group of people on this trip, including my mom. so she was glad to be reunited with Jim and they talked and talked and then we went to the city-wide yard sale and shopped and shopped. Then I raced to a wedding and made it to the concert in time to catch the last half. I gave Randy a copy of Sacco and Vanzetti, because his piano arranger, Michael Roth, did some music for us and he had seen it "in progress". So if there's a crappy movie on the plane, maybe he'll watch it! And he said we could interview him for the Johnny Mercer film if it goes through (I'll find out Monday) so that will be fun.

As I drove Mom and Jim around town we listened to Guy Haines the entire time and they were both entralled by his beautiful, pure baritone. They both loved Guy's version of Randy's "Marie", and my mom loved every song. In her words: "He's better than the people at the top of the charts right now". That solves some of my holiday shopping--I wonder if I could get Guy to autograph some CD's?? ;)

Sorry I was E & T last night. At 10 o'clock, I just couldn't keep my eyes open. I'd had three previous nights of less than seven hours of sleep a night, so I was ready to crash, and I did. Got 9 hours of sleep last night. Most welcome, I must say!

I watched a few more OFFICE episodes last night and especially enjoyed the "Daughter's Day" episode. Toby's daughter was simply adorable while Stanley's was an obnoxious brat. And the show got poignant when Michael watched a tape of a kiddie show he was on as a child and then the kids asked him questions that made him realize what a lonely and empty life he's living.

I starting watching HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS on DVD to get in my head what the DVD looked like before the network HD version came on.

When it did, I was frustrated that ABC chose to use a cropped HD version of the movie (HBO does this with certain HD versions of movies, too, and it always makes me furious). So, I turned off the network version (which was not only cropped but also edited for time) and put back on the DVD version which looked great in upconverted standard definition.

DR MS - The Christy Minstrels were a group of singers in the 19th Century.  When Randy Sparks started his group, he called them "New" and used the CM name to let people know what type of music they were going to be singing, although they quickly moved to more contemporary folk music.

DR MBARNUM - who is Mrs Sparks?  Randy did some "acting" as well, most notable in COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL with Miss Mamie Van Doren, Mr Conway Twitty, Ms Pamela Mason and other distinguished thespians.

Can hardly wait to "hear" the concert!

Well it sounds as if a certain label was in charge of Mr BK's car arrangements this morning.  But by now he is in the air!

DR MATTH - I just remember a couple of episodes of THE THIN MAN (tv) specifically, but I remember thinking the apartment, the car, and the clothes of Nick and Nora were the utmost in sew-fisty-kashun.  They had a suspended staircase with unusual newel posts that fascinated me.

Sunday morning greetings!

Sounds like there were great concerts on both coasts! ;D

...and in the midwest, too.  After getting home from work, I watched the end of the Michigan-Iowa football game, had a quick bite to eat, then went with DH Richard to Oxford, OH, for the fall concert by the Miami University Collegiate Chorale and Men's Glee Club.  Richard is a proud Glee Club alum and always joins them to sing the traditional songs - "Johnny Schmoeker" and the Miami fight song and alma mater.

The Collegiate Chorale and Glee Club are conducted by Ethan Sperry (http://www.mugleeclub.org/director.html), whose father

Paul Sperry (http://www.paulsperry.net)

was the guest soloist with both groups.  In a delightful bit of synchronicity, in his patter Paul mentioned first hearing the song he was about to sing (Brazilian folk song, "Azulao") at a concert in New York's Town Hall.

For the same reason that there is an entire sports section in the daily newspaper while arts coverage is quite limited. Our country is sports-obsessed.

I'm not defending it, mind you. It makes me just as angry as you.

Good morning, all!  The original Christy Minstrels were one more mistrel show of the 19th Century.  Everyone who was anyone saw them. They were a huge success, so huge that Gilbert and Sullivan parodied them in their UTOPIA, LTD.

DR MBarnum, I will tell you offsite a story about Barry McGuire's time of duty as a cast replacement in HAIR on Broadway.  It's not for a family site.

Randy Sparks did the English versions of the songs sung in the movie THE SINGING NUN.

BK, I am thrilled about the events of last evening, and I look forward to the recording.  I am having a hard time typing this as I am kicking myself at the same time for not getting a ticket.

Today: a check of the BABES lyric sheets with the CDs, then more brain surgery.  BK, I will need a fax number to send you some vocal writing.

Good morning all.  I am happy to see that my laptop is still working very well. Whew!  I spent 2 days trying to get it to work after uninstalling Norton, but to no avail.  I think I know why now.  The software in the DELL that restores everything to the way it was the day you bought it without reinstalling everything is a Symantec product. So, I have the feeling that if you take out the Symantec files out of a Dell computer, you're basically screwed. So, I'm back to Norton, but it's working so that's all I care about

I'm pretty sure that, the way the sports contracts are written, the networks are obligated to broadcast the entire game.  And you are not alone in your rant.  Der Brucer rants on a weekly basis about CBS screwing around with it's Sunday schedule.  (Me, I couldn't care less.)

I know they make a lot more money on advertising during sporting events than regular shows.  I'm sure that has something to do with it.  They probably charge more for the ads that would either be shown in overtime or immediately after the game as well.  It's always about money

I love David Copperfield. I even like the cheesey TV version from the '70's.

TNT did a nice adaptation a few years ago that I worked on doing their trailers and promos. Paul Bettany played Steerforth, which to me is always the most interesting character. He was great! I told the producer "This guy is going to be a big star". I'm happy to see he's done so well!

As BK has said, the concert was a delight!  I'm grateful that I got to be a part of it!*  So many wonderful new sngs were sung by Alice, Emily did quite a few show tunes from classic, not-so-classic and possible-classic shows; making for a fine blend of material.  Each gal had their own shining moments.
The after party affair at the Cafe 1 2 3 was also a true treat, Evil Twin and I stayed, and stayed as The Seigels chatted with us, Emily chatted with us (I'll be seeing her again in a few weeks, as she's doing a teaching gig at Carnegie Mellon!), Shannon, Alice's huuby, remembered me from the time chatted in Pittsburgh, Jonathan - today's HHW BIRTHDAY BOY, and Michael Dale from one the Broadway sites on line.
Janet and I walked Barbara Seigel to her cab, then called it a night.
I was having so much fun that I was oblivious to the come-on that had been heading my way all evening.

*as there was "an incindent" on the subway lines at 28th Street, the trains uptown weren't running, and Janet and I stood on a corner for twenty minutes before a cab could take us!  great driver, a true lifesaver, got us to Town Hall and as we plopped into our seats - - Alice and Emily took to the stage!  Incredible timing!

I love the BBC version with Maggie Smith and Daniel Radcliffe. but I'm quite fond of the MGM film as well.

Re: "Heroes" and Cillaliz' query about my posting "Save the cheerleader...save the World"...this is a totally intriguing series about people around the world developing extraordinary abilities.  An Indian scientist, mysteriously murdered, proposed a theory that humankind was about to make an evolutionary leap and that people with such powers would begin learning of them/experiencing them/experimenting with them.

The cheerleader is one character among several -- two of whom can fly, and one of whom can teleport himself in both distance and time.  In previews for the upcoming episode, some of the other characters with powers begin receiving messages that read: "Save the cheerleader...save the world."

One of the characters is a drug-addicted artist who pains apocalyptic visions when he's high.  His paintings are actually of the very characters we've seen, thus far.  One of his paintings is of an apocalypse that this group is apparently being led toward preventing.

re: "Jericho" and MBarnum's query as to whether anyone else watches...YES! I won't miss an episode unless I can't help it.  I haven't experienced any problems with the camerawork, although it's possible it's an effect the producers want to impart because of the nature of what's going on in this little town.  I really like all the characters, thus far.   The lead male character is my favorite!! :)

Good Morning DR Edi -- Randy Newman wrote the theme song for "Monk" right?

Right, "It's a Jungle Out There". He didn't write the original theme---this is the current one. I like it better, of course! But there was a lot of protest when they changed themes. It's funny how people grow so attached to them.

I have written and edited a gardening show, "A Gardener's Diary" for HGTV for 15 seasons. Every 5 years or so we'd do a whole new graphic treatment and new musical theme. The pieces were never that great to begin with, they sounded like library music, but still people would write and complain. I think it was because a lot of people leave their TV tuned to that network and would come in when they heard our theme and knew the show was starting.

There's a new Randy Newman piano book out that has the "Monk" theme and other music he's written for film and TV. Michael Roth (you may know of him, he does theatre music in La and NY) did all the piano arrangements and they are very true to Randy's complex playing style, where he manages to condense a whole orchestral arrangment into 10 happy fingers:

http://snipurl.com/103ow

When I went to the "Monk" writer's offices to record Tony Shalhoub as the voice of Sacco, Michael sent me an advance copy of the "Monk" theme which I gave to Tony and the show's creator, Andy Breckman. When I went in Andy's office, I saw that on his wall he already had a framed orchestra part from the scoring session, signed by Randy. They all love him there!

OK.....I may be the only one to admit it -- but DER BRUCER,  I want to know where the semi-superman picture came from ??

 EYE CANDY II (http://rjr10036.typepad.com/photos/eye_candy_ii/index.html)

Hey, where else can you pick up photos illustrating tid-bits like:

Quote
Reuters reports: "Using his penis as a brush, artist Tim "Pricasso" Patch performed a number of live paintings to mark the start of Sexpo in Sydney, Australia today."

Actually, I've been doing a bit of Internet searching for a valid intellectual reason:

On Oct 16th I received a EMail alerting me that the notorious Gay-Outer, Mike Rogers, was going to out a Republican Senator the following day on a National Radio Show. The time came and went, and I heard no news. I checked on his web site, and sure enough, he had outed the chap. (He even posted sound clips of same.) I started trying to find any main-stream media reports of same. (Seems I was not alone in the quest, the folks who track Internet Searches reported that the Senator's name was the number one search for the day! In the process of reviewing a bunch of "appropriate' (for the task at hand) web sites I came upon the  PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK (http://rjr10036.typepad.com/proceed_at_your_own_risk/2006/10/queen_for_a_day.html) site.

There is still no mainstream media reports on the outing, unlike T. K. Knight's "To Tell The Truth" which was bannered on IMDB's home page today. Kudos to Knight for saying: "While I prefer to keep my personal life private, I hope the fact that I'm gay isn't the most interesting part of me."

This summer NBC filmed several 3-4 minutes "webisodes" featured the supporting players in a mini-mystery surrounding $3,000 of missing office funds. These were shown on the NBC.com site, but since I don't have a broadband connection, this was the first time I got to see them. Really enjoyed them, but the mystery was never solved, at least, not with the webisodes on the DVD. If there were more, they weren't included.

I watched the blooper reel and enjoyed seeing many of the stone-faced characters on the show actually breaking character and becoming uncontrollable. Since all of the characters have to do face-front camera interviews in character for part of every episode, watching them crack up at some of the absurd things their characters have to say was priceless.

One of the things NBC did on April Fools's Day last year was get various cast members from THE OFFICE to do some fake and ridiculous Public Service Announcements in the "The More You Know" style of NBC's legit PSAs. These were placed on the disc. I had only caught two of them as they were spread over both Eastern and Western time zone broadcasts of NBC's prime time. Some were really funny.

I know they make a lot more money on advertising during sporting events than regular shows.  I'm sure that has something to do with it.  They probably charge more for the ads that would either be shown in overtime or immediately after the game as well.  It's always about money

Don't blame "the money", blame hoi polloi. The ad dollars follow the viewers' taste choices.

Back from my small shopping errand to Target.  This coming Friday is my library system's annual Staff Day, for which each department was invited to create a basket to be raffled and offered a whopping $20 to spend on it.  Figuring that we needed to find a way to fill a basket almost for free, I suggested that we do Nonprofit Nick Nacks.  Since no one else in my department had a better idea, I've been working several weeks now gathering stuff from my collection, my coworkers, and my contacts in the nonprofit community.

Today I went out and spent our allocation on the container - a chrome wire-mesh file box - and some consumer philanthropy products from

My rant for yesterday and later today:

Why the *$^(* are sports games SO important that the networks disrupt their regular schedules and displease millions of people?  The numbers who watch NON SPORTS programs is much greater?  Of course the answer has to be money.  But it is MOST distressing....

I am currently burning several episodes of the old TV series LAWMAN onto DVD for my interviewee Bek Nelson. She played John Russell's love interest the first season...then she up and was replaced, without storyline explanation, by Peggie Castle.

No one knows why...not even Bek! LOL!

DR Jane, I am certainly seeing why you used to like Peter Brown...wowee....could he be any cuter! LOL!

Mudhoney was the first Russ Meyer film I saw - at the late lamented Cinema Theater on Western just north of Santa Monica Blvd.

Monolith is MUCH better than MOLE PEOPLE!

Jane was the wife of the Father that knew Best!!

She was exquisite in LOST HORIZON....with a nifty nude swim.

Actually it was not here, but a double.

I always got Jane Wyatt and Jane Wyman mixed up.

THE AMAZING RACE is on tonight, and CBS seems to be on track, time wise.

I don't think they were on time. When I checked a little after 8, 60 MINUTES still seemed to be on, so I set the DVR to record the next show in line on the local CBS affiliate which goes until 11:35. That should insure that I get both COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE.

No, one of them can fly.  The other, his brother, can absorb and duplicate other's abilities for limited periods of time.

Oh, der B already posted about this.  Like minds.

This is correct. He seems to be able to parrot their abilities as long as he is in the other's vicinity. I'm not sure he's figured that out yet, however.

I then watched episode 4 from the CSI: NY first season boxed set. This episode involved the discovery of a skeleton which had been dressed in clothes and placed on a bus to ride around until someone discovered it. I had seen the episode a couple of times, but I really had no memory of how the story resolved itself. Entertaining episode.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had the annoying and oh-so-obvious Nora back this week (her absence last week had given me hope she was gone; no such luck. Looks like she's in for the long haul.) Thus, the Lynette storyline was once again dreary and uninteresting.

I enjoyed Bree's creative ways of handling her problem with Danielle.

Susan's story has intrigued me. She obviously still cares about Mike, but once Ian comes calling again, howlong will her resolve last?

Gabby and Carlos - how much longer can the War of the Roses go on?

Enjoyed BROTHERS & SISTERS. Well, with two male-male kisses shown, of course I found that unusual for network TV. And I'm getting fond of all the characters enough to want to know what's happening in their lives plus the added problem of the retirement fund money at the company that's got to be replaced.

I'm probably going to start on the boxed set of THE BOOK OF DANIEL tomorrow. Since NBC only aired a few episodes (and skipped some along the way), many of these episodes I will not have seen. I really liked the show the short time it aired, so I'm hoping the episodes in the set will live up to the few I saw.

What media do you normally record on? Videotape? DVD-R, a hard drive, a DVD-RW or DVD-RAM?

My DVD recorder allows me to record even high definition broadcasts, but because it's recording in standard definition, it slaps letterbox bars above and below the image.

Back from my parents' anniversary celebration.  We ate and ate until we couldn't eat any more, then we stopped eating and got the leftovers wrapped up for addiitonal meals.  My parents have raved about the Floridian for years, and we all figured how could could a diner be, but this was a real treat.  (Although it is indeed a diner in Brooklyn at Manhattan prices.)

I have One Dollar DVD version of David Copperfield that stars Robin Phillips, Richard Attenborough, and Laurence Olivier.

That's the made-for-tv one from the 70's. Cheesey production values but a great cast! In addition to the above, there's Ron Moody as Uriah Heep, Cyril Cusack as Barkis and Ralph Richardson as a very endearing as Micawber.

That was one disappointing sell-out in the TNT version: Michael Richards' slapstick Micawber. Cringeworthy. Sally Field was also annoying at Aunt Betsy. Why did they feel the need to yuck it up?
They did get it right with casting Anthony Andrews as the menacing Murdstone (love that name!) and the actor who played Uriah Heep---he was perfect, as was Paul Bettany. And they filmed much of it at one of my favorite spots in Ireland: Powerscourt Gardens.

I couldn't stand the character of David's first wife Dora in the 70's version. I knew she was going to die in the film and couldn't wait until they killed her off!

A. You should be able to use your "Guide" button, select a future show, press Select, then choose "Set VCR Timer" which will automatically change you channel to the show at the proper time.

B. You shoudn't have to "buy" their Tivo type thingy- it is a DVR variant of your control box which costs just a few bucks a month to rent - and you can tape one show while watching another!

DR Pogue, Ritch and I acted together in the mid-1970s.  He, his girlfriend at the time, and I saw THE LAST TANGO IN PARIS together, as I recall.  I like him a lot, and I hope he's well and happy.

One of our cast ended up as a celebrated writer, Anderson Farrell, one left the biz and became a millionaire selling real estate and living on Beekman Place.

Gay Republicans: An article in Section A on Wednesday about friction in the Republican Party between gays and religious conservatives said Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) had a campaign manager who is gay. The Allen staff member who is gay is his communications director.
