Title: KEEPING MY HEAD SCREWED ON STRAIGHT
Post by: bk on October 24, 2006, 12:41:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ebullient and ebullient and now it is time for you to post until the ebullient cows come home - they'll be here just as soon as they get their heads screwed on straight.

"PANDICULATION" is a word that is not available in the free Merriam-Webster On-line Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/).  How rude!

It is found on dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/PANDICULATION) without having to pay anything. :)

It's the act of stretching oneself...a stretching and stiffening especially of the trunk and extremities (as when fatigued and drowsy or after waking from sleep).

Why would anyone need to pay for that definition??

And now, I must sleep so that in the morning I may pandiculate when I wake.

TOD:

I don't remember his name, but I believe it was a Warner Bros. Cartoon. He was a buzzard who elevator didn't go to the top floor.

Least favorites. Road Runner and Will E Cayote and Tpm and Jerry. Same basic premise. One chases the other. The one never catches the other (Most of the time in Tom & Jerry). A few are okay but more than that they are not memorable.

But my absolute favorite is:
One Froggy Night (?)
The frog that sings and dances only for the person who finds him.

With a strawberry blonde
For hours on end
Calling for the band to take a seventh-inning PANDICULATION.

TOD:

I have always loved, and always will love, the late, great Chuck Jones.  He raised the standard stable of Termite Terrace characters to glorifying new heights.  Remember Bugs discovering that he was his own worst enemy in "Baton Bunny"?  Fantastic.  And I happen to love the Road Runner cartoons!  I also love what he did with Tom and Jerry when he left Warners (well, when Warners shut down their animation unit).

But Pepe le Pew has always left me cold.  Don't know why.

I'm up, since 3:30... can't sleep. Just sittin' here, pandiculating and trying to find something on the ol' snooze box... nothin'. None of those great old cartoons... Remember the opera cartoon? Loved that. "Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit!" to Wagner!!!

Well, hello to the East Coasters who might be rising soon... So much homework this week, but I have the jump on it. Because I don't sleep!! Gonna go back to bed and try to nap for another 2 hours... long day ahead.

And I'm SO looking forward to BRAIN... (Brain? What is "brain"? - from "Spock's Brain" - a Star Trek reference... ps - my cousin Sheila was in that one.)

What great Portland photos.  Thanks DR TOMovOZ!

So glad to hear the party (and all else) went well yesterday.  I am expecting by Wednesday - ASK BK DAY - that all of the activity will catch up with our fearless leader.

I am beginning to see the light - RE: HEROES - as well.  But there are still more questions than answers.  And though the show probably owes its existence to LOST, I think I like it better.

Hmmmm.....well IF I must choose one character, it would be Bugs Bunny.  And I have a couple of favorites:

What's Opera, Doc?
Little Red Riding Rabbit
Hyde and Hare

and whatever the title of the one where he was shot to the moon and met the character that became Marvin the Martian.

Good morning, all!  I'm pondering a trip to Toyland this morning or working here on The Brain until noon and heading over to the NYPL.  I think the Brain has me under its spell.  Four  or five errors?

Actually, BK called me last night while I was off to dinner with my friends Alice and Cathie with some fixes in the Act One finale.  I think I may make those fixes this morning and lay out my last number for Act One!  My goal is to have everything I have here on "The Brain" laid out before next Tuesday when I fly to Ohio to see family for a week.

DR Tomovoz, look out for that tentacle grabbing the Golden Gate Bridge.  And what's the shiney globe? MBarnum!

TOD:  Warner Brothers cartoons are still my faves.  I feel their wit and sense of the world's absurdities left the other studios in the dust.  I feel the same about Rocky, Bullwinkle and their ensemble.

I loved the Disney Studio's animated features, but I think the cartoons weren't so much fun.

I never found the MGM animated cartoons very funny either, including Tom and Jerry.

But the WORST were the Terry Toons and the Paramount films that included Baby Huey and Little Lulu.  Ugh.

Beaky Buzzard was the buzzard whose elevator didn't go to the top floor and very funny he was too, always singing, I believe:  "I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee, won't my mama be so brought of me..."

Besides, the usual array of wonderful Warner regulars, I was always fond of the little owl who sang, "I loveta singa about the moona and the juna and the springa" and the little kitten who sang, "I wear my green fedora for Dora"...a cartoon I've only seen once in my life, I think, but I loved and would love to see again.

Good morning!

Gorgeous but cold day here. Lows in the 30s this morning, and I didn't cut my heat on before I went to bed last night and woke up to a 54 degree house. I have since rectified that situation. It's going to be low 30s and high 50s all week, so I knew I'd need heat to survive.

Yes, the Warner cartoons had a zany comedy sense that no other studio came close to.

Daffy Duck was always my favorite character because of his pluck. No matter how many times he was thwarted in whatever it was he wanted to do, he kept trying. And DUCK AMUCK is my all-time favorite cartoon.

Of the Disney characters, I liked Donald the best with his fiery temper and garbled diction.

HEROES is seemingly giving us the pieces of the puzzle much faster than LOST is, but that doesn't make me think LOST is the lesser show. They each have their own styles of storytelling, and I'm willing to be patient.

I am trusting LOST's producers to finally provide us with answers once they see that the show is in its final season. And I have no reason to think they'll disappoint loyal viewers once that day comes. In the meantime, they can continue to perplex and puzzle me all they want as long as they don't bore me, and I haven't ever found it boring.

Back to the cartoons a second. I don't care for Tom and Jerry either, but they are the most Oscared cartoon characters in the Academy's history. Most of the other famous characters (Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, Speedy Gonzales, Tweety, Pepe LePew) won one for a film of theirs (Mr. Magoo won twice) but not the succession of awards that Tom and Jerry collected.

I love the old Merrie Melodies, particularly the ones that spoofed the 1930s muscials or that would feature songs from those musicals.

Quote
TOY TOWN HALL
(Freleng/1936)
When someone steals your heart away
Let it be me
But when someone steals your heart away
Let it be me, just me
Merrily we roll along, Rubinoff and me
When he plays his fiddle I just go on a spree
It's a cinch that every time I go on the air
I just look around and find old Rubinoff there
Sweet music makes a rainy day seem clear again
It brings you near again to me
Sweet music makes the same old story new again
By bringing to you again my song
Say, have you ever met the girl who's the talk of the town?
A work of art without a question
Who gives you part of her suggestions
You better write her number down
I'm wearing my green fedora, Fedora
Not Alice, not Annie, not Casey but Fedora
I usually come to town in a battered old hat of brown
But it got red/green when me and my queen go steppin' around
Fedora is the girl I love

Non-flammable?  I should hope so, there's nothing worse than....well....never mind.

I have known several pieces of flaming crap in my day, even worked with a couple.

TOD;

Yes dear gang, I have to admit that I too am basically a Warner Bros. lover.  I just loved the off-the-wall and skewed look at life that their characters could see.

Take Bugs..... he was both a womanizing Lothario and a flaming nelly -- it just depended on his mood and the situation!  Later on, I liked Rocky & Bullwinkle because I never quite knew what direction the cartoon/story would go in.  And also stuff like "Fractured Fairytales."

I blame it all on Jose !  :)  :)

"You're just an angel in disguise......."   (How many times was that recycled in cartoons by Warner's ??)

I like the Fleischer cartoons: Betty Boop, (especially the ones with Cab Calloway!) Popeye, etc. because they were so weird!

The old Warner Brothers cartoons with Bugs can't be beat. I didn't like it when Chuck Jones took over Tom and Jerry et al. The designs were more elegant before he gave them their extreme makeover and made their features cruder...heavy eyebrows, etc.

There's a WB cartoon called "Daffy in Hollywood", where Daffy Duck ends up on a film set. There is a dog with big headphones who is a sound recordist and Daffy has a scene where he's editing and splicing film together with a big paintbrush full of glue. I used screen captures from these two scenes for our wedding invitations since these are our job descriptions. The theme of our wedding was "The Marriage of Sound and Picture". (When you finish a mix and print it with the picture, it's called "marrying".) It took place at the home of my assistant editor, Tom and his gardening partner, David. It was decorated to the hilt and had some suprise guests (lifesized cardboard figures of Marilyn Monroe and others peering out from behind the shrubbery. And a steel drum band for music. (This is what happens when it's your second wedding and you're the one paying for it. Your mother has no control and you do whatever the hell you want!)

I'm up, I'm up.

Favorite cartoon character - Daffy Duck.

Favorite cartoons (at least the funniest and/or weirdest) - Tex Avery's Rock-a-Bye Bear (fall out of your seat funny), and Chew Chew Baby (fall out of your seat weird - about a cannibal baby).

I also love all the Merrie Melodies cartoons (I Love To Sing-a!) and the music of Carl Stalling.

The new Raymond Scott compilation that I mentioned recently should be on the shelves soon. (Scott wrote a lot of the music that Stalling adapted for WB cartoons.) This set not only features the instantly recognizable "Powerhouse" (the theme that would be summoned whenever you'd see a conveyor belt or big machinery) in 20-some versions by different artists, but also Scott's original recordings followed by one or two contemporary covers of each song. Produced by the brilliant Irwin Chusid, Scott's curator. Highly recommended!

The ION doesn't have a 78 speed, but I do believe you can transfer in  78s at either 45 or 33 1/3 and the software will correct the speed to 78.  I haven't tried that feature yet.

Tuesday greetings!  It's a blustery day here in SW Ohio and I think I saw a snow flurry or two on my drive to work.

TOD - Although I watched hours and hours of cartoons as a child, I have no strong memories of particular ones.  My dad and I watched Huckleberry Hound together.  What I'm trying to remember, too, are all the local (Detroit and Windsor) TV hosts who introduced the cartoons - Sagebrush Shorty, Jingles the Clown, Poopdeck Paul, Milky the (Twin Pines Dairy) Clown, and Wixie (of Wixie's Wonderland).  Googling to confirm these names, I found my lunchtime entertainment at

Detroit Kid Show (http://www.detroitkidshow.com)

DR JRand56, thanks for the tip on The Prisoner DVD's. I have Vol. 1 &2 of the series, and the only extra it has is the "rare foreign file cabinet" scenes, which simply amount to the same file cabinet with the "resigned" drawer redone with that word in different languages. Pretty lame extra!

I hate it when they then release an anniversary issue with all this good extra stuff after I've bought the first ones. (Well, Greg bought these for me for Xmas...they were my very first DVD's.) Damn them! (Or course I'm going to order it!)

I think Beaky Buzzard was a recurring character. We used him in a documentary Greg worked on about buzzards, but it was too expensive to clear the rights. That's a really good film, sitting on the shelf..

Does this, from  EXPERTS - Beaky Buzzard (http://experts.about.com/e/b/be/Beaky_Buzzard.htm) count as a work-up?

Quote
The character first appeared in the 1942 cartoon Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid, directed by Bob Clampett. The cartoon's plot revolves around the hopeless attempts of the brainless buzzard, here called "Killer", to catch Bugs Bunny for his domineering mother back at the nest. Beaky's voice, modeled after ventriloquist Edgar Bergen's character Mortimer Snerd, is provided by voice actor Kent Rogers. Clampett brought the character back in the 1945 film The Bashful Buzzard, a cartoon that closely mirrors its predecessor, only this time featuring Beaky's hapless hunting without Bugs as an antagonist. Rogers reprised his role as the character's voice for the film, but he died in World War II before finishing all his dialogue, so Stan Freberg was brought in to finish the work (as was Eddie Bartell, according to some sources).

Warner Bros. apparently thought they had something in the character, and Beaky was featured in much of the Looney Tunes merchandising of the time. He also appeared in several issues of Dell Comics' Looney Tunes series of comic books, usually paired with another minor player, Henery Hawk.

Clampett left the studio in 1946, ending Beaky's career for a time. The character was eventually brought back in the 1950 Friz Freleng film The Lion's Busy, now voiced by the versatile Mel Blanc. Freleng made the buzzard smarter, pitting him against a dim-witted lion named Leo. Bob McKimson also featured the character in a film that year, Strife with Father. McKimson's Beaky is again back to his idiotic self, this time under the tutelage of his adoptive father, a sparrow who is trying to teach Beaky how to survive in the wild.

Most recently, Beaky Buzzard has had minor roles in various Warner Bros. projects, such as Tiny Toon Adventures, where he plays the mentor of the minor character; Concord Condor, or the movies Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, where he has a short cameo.

Even though I consider myself to be from Minnesota (though after 26 years in New York I'm now a New Yorker), I was born in Detroit and lived there for enough years to remember the Uptown and Faygo commercials. I was a Magilla Gorilla fan and still have the album from the show. I liked Ricochet Rabbit and Deputy Droop A Long, Punkin Puss and Mushmouse and the whole gang

Magilla Gorilla (theme)
We've got a gorilla for sale...a yellow gorilla for sale.
Won't you buy him...take him home and try him...gorilla for sale.
See in the window, Magilla Gorilla...full of charm and appeal.
Handsome, elegant, intelligent, sweet...He's really ideal.
So if you want a yellow gorilla you can call your own...
a gorilla who'll be with ya when you're all alone.
(Magilla speaking): "Its the MAGILLA GORILLA SHOW.
Starring me and Mr. Peebles...
with Mush-Mouse and Pumpkin-Puss and Rickochet Rabbit and Droop-Along"
(Little girl speaking): "How much is that Gorilla in the window?"
Take our advice...
at any price...
a gorilla like Magilla is mighty nice.
Gorilla...

Really well, most of the time.  Boo seems to pick on Callie a lot, and she puts up with more than I would but when she's had enough, she's had enough.  They fight every night when I come home and later when I turn off the light to go to sleep, but if I get up and go to separate them, they run off together downstairs so I can't get them.  They are friends and I think they will get along better as Boo grows up. She's 1 year old this month, so she's still VERY playful.

Another great musical moment from Looney Tunes was Porky Pig as Friar Tuck in the Daffy Duck Robin Hood, singing "Barbara Allen".

The other night I was rehearsing a play for a staged reading and one of the actors used a voice that reminded me of Odie Cologne.

And then I watched another CSI: NY episode from the first season set. It concerned a bank robbery gone bad with a very surprising kidnapper/murderer.

I saved JUSTICE to watch tonight during the 8 p.m. hour since there is nothing on any network that I'm interested in.

CBS is running an all-rerun night tonight in light of the World SEries. NBC is rerunning both LAW & ORDER shows tonight though FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is new.

At least BOSTON LEGAL and VERONICA MARS have new episodes, and, of course, nip/tuck which I'll watch at 10 and record BOSTON LEGAL for tomorrow.

Here's another post in the "lots of posts" vein...this time about lunches (or food):

I had trout w/steamed veggies and rice as my main course today.  It was quite tasty.  The soup was chicken rice and, as usual, homemade in the kitchen of this little restaurant nearby.

I sense a recurring theme.
der Brucer

I love my Mom and we get along fine, it's just that parent thing where they don't trust you to make wise decisions. But now I find her asking my advice more often, when she's about to make a major purchase, etc.

I think it drove her a little crazy not to be involved in the planning of our wedding, but I just told her to show up and have a good time...and she did!

I am now in the midst of painting the new house. She was critical of my colors, (they weren't all beige) but I just said "Mom, it's my house...my colors". I think she'll like it when she sees the finished project.

I adored Huckelberry Hound
Huckleberry was my favorite when I was a tiny tot @5-6. By 7 I loved Top Cat. Mentioning Bob Clampett reminded me of Beany and Cecil, a favorite when I was about 8 or 9 and starting to understand puns. They would travel to places like (instead of Bikini Atoll) No Bikini Atoll. It took me a while to figure some of these out, especialy since I had never heard of Bikini Atoll,  but it was the same kind of humor I grew to love with Rocky and Bullwinkle. ("Yangtzee with the Smiling Face", etc.)

Last night's ratings tidbits:

HEROES was up 10% from last week's strong numbers and now ranks as the top new show in the age 18-49 ratings.

STUDIO 60 lost almost 40% of its lead-in from HEROES. I hate to say this since I enjoy the show, but its days are numbered. Again, I think NBC will let the 13 ordered episodes play out, but I can't see them renewing this past those original 13 episodes. It just hasn't caught on in a mass way, though it did end up with about 1.5 million more viewers than ABC's WHAT ABOUT BRIAN which beat it last week.

THE CLASS dropped again from its lead-in HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. THough CBS ordered 4 more scripts for the show, I'm thinking it may read them and decide the direction of the show is hopeless and let THE KING OF QUEENS come back to the slot at midseason.

Next up was CSI: MIAMI which had a weird episode of curses and crimes in a posh neighborhood.

DR MBarnum, Matt Battaglia was a principal guest star. Looked good as ever but he may have lost a little weight since the last time I saw him on a show.

Darn, I keep missing his shows! He used to send out a reminder to me whenever he had an upcoming show airing.

There were two volumes of the Stalling Project music.

And I think I recall another CD of music from Warner Brothers cartoons.

The library system that I work for only had volume 1 of "The Carl Stalling Project."

This morning, my DVR recorded ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD of TCM, one of the few MGM movies they made on loan-out during their Universal star years.

I have never seen this movie (nor their RIO RITA with Kathryn Grayson), but since there isn't that much for me to record tonight, I should have plenty of time tomorrow to finally get to see this.

I never found the MGM animated cartoons very funny either, including Tom and Jerry.

But the WORST were the Terry Toons and the Paramount films that included Baby Huey and Little Lulu.  Ugh.

What weird things stick in our minds from childhood!

Little Lulu, Little Lulu,
With frekles on her chin.
Alway in and out of trouble,
but mostly always in.

Using Daddy's necktie for the tail of her kite,
Using Mommy's lipstick for the letters she writes.

Though the clock strikes seventy thirty,
It's really after ten.
Looks like Lulu's been repairing it again.

Though she's wild as any Zulu,
and she's just as hard to tame.
Little Lulu, I love you-you just the same, the same.
Little Lulu, I love you-you just the same.[/size]

And mine hasn't even SHIPPED yet! I've been having a lot of late shipments from Amazon lately.

I don't hate to say this, but my "Astaire-Rogers" box set has arrived.  It's b-e-a-u-t-e-o-u-s.

It's exactly the box they'd ship if you bought all 10 titles in one 12-disc set...only there are the 5 new titles, the Partners in Rhythm DVD and a CD of songs direct from Astaire-Rogers soundtracks, and keepcases for the original issue, complete with artwork.

There are quite a few extras included, such as b/w photos, campaign book reproduction for "Shall We Dance", etc.

QUITE the nicely put together box!!!

Is no one reading and/or finishing a book of short stories???  What a revoltin' development this is.

Dear Esteemed BK --

I finished "Adventures With My Father" 2 nights ago, and then re-read it once again.  On the surface, it could seem like a fairly light-hearted story;  but dear BK, I know you by now just well enough to put this piece and that piece together, and it really affected me emotionally - even more so than "Your Worst Nightmare."  Aside from all the snippets of your own earlier life, there were a lot of parallels to things that went on in my early life, and the end result was a very powerful read for me.

I'm kind of disturbed by a recurring theme or device that I've encountered in your writing more than once now, but that is only something to talk about in the face to face world.

I think that "How To Write A Dirty Book" goes so far beyond the expected themes and emotions of just a light-hearted "easy-read" book, that any who haven't read it yet, are in for a tremendous treat and surprise.

I had an interesting call tonight. I didn't make it to the cell phone in time but the caller ID said it was DR Jane....so I called her and left a message.  This concerned me a little as DR Jane doesn't call me when we aren't in the same place (such as our New York trip)   Then sometime later I had a the voicemail signal...so I listened and it was this hum or beep or something and I could hear that someone was trying to talk, but I couldn't hear any words.

Now I'm really wondering so I sent an email...well I finally got a response. Turns out Sherlock was on Janes lap and it appears he somehow dialed the phone, or something like that :-)

DR Jane will be back after they finish their visit with their company....she says Hi

Sad to say, the show didn't score any better ratings on Monday than it was drawing on Wednesday, so I have a feeling the show won't go past the 13 episode original order.

Then, it'll be ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD. I've got ON AN ISLAND WITH YOU and KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE lined up to be recorded over the next day or two as well. I've never seen either of them.

So, I'm heading down to bed now. With the heat finally turned on, I'm expecting a more restful night.

Good night!

I am now in the midst of painting the new house. She was critical of my colors, (they weren't all beige) but I just said "Mom, it's my house...my colors". I think she'll like it when she sees the finished project.

Just so the colors go with the Avocado appliances.

I'm back - another long day, and I never had time to eat anything, so I just wolfed down a bit of food and now must sit on my couch like so much fish.

MusicGuy, thank you for your touching words re the book.  Please write a review on amazon, because I love the way you put things.

Shayne is thinking about it.

Thanks BK...... It's now time for me to go fall over for the evening.  It was fun, all through the day, to think about a lot of my old favorite cartoons.

One of the most overlooked, especially in the very earliest incarnation (L.A. area local only) was of course, Time For Beanie.  It wasn't until I was much older that I realized just what a bunch of geniuses made up the creative team.

BK - Did you see the episode where Cecil eye fell off (it was a glued on button), and he just ad libbed his way out of it?  It was great !!

Greg used to work on a Spanish language puppet show for children called "Salsa". One of the characters, El Monstro, was shaking his head so vigorously that his eye popped off and into the waitress puppet's salad. The puppeteers, who watched monitors as they performed, acted appropriately The waitress screamed hysterically and El Monstro was in a blind panic. It was hilarious, but didn't make the cut. Too scary for little kids, but a great outtake for the wrap party!

As a kid, I loved Thunderbolt the Wonder Colt.  Bob Edmiston, I believe.
