One of the most overlooked, especially in the very earliest incarnation (L.A. area local only) was of course, Time For Beanie.  It wasn't until I was much older that I realized just what a bunch of geniuses made up the creative team.

TITLE: "Over the Bounding Main" My first memory of this song "Sailing, sailing, over the bounding main" was as the theme song for an early TV show named "Time for Beanie". This was a televised puppet show (not unlike Kukla, Fran, and Ollie) which starred a kid with a beanie on his head named, appropriately "Beanie" and his sidekick Cecil, the "Seasick sea serpent."
It was a fifteen minute show, five days a week which we watched on our Dumont TV.

Stan Freberg teamed with  DAWS BUTLER (http://dawsbutler.com/) to bring the show to life.

Quote
Daws Butler the voice behind some of our most beloved cartoon characters. He was the voice of Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Snagglepuss and many more. He worked at Hanna Barbera studios from 1957 till 1988 as well as working for Warner Bros., MGM, Jay Ward and Walter Lantz. He also wrote and performed on the Stan Freberg show and the original live version of Time for Beanie (Einstein and Harpo Marx's favorite show) as well as acting in radio and voicing TV commercials.

A 1985 Article in the  LA Times (http://dawsbutler.com/grapics-daws-2/latimes-5-15-85.gif) reports on a ceremony honoring KTLA:

Daws Butler:
A Personal Portrait
of My Mentor
By Joe Bevilacqua

After service in the Naval Reserve during World War II, Butler moved to California and picked up radio parts on such network broadcasts as "Suspense" and "The Whistler" before spending five years teamed with Stan Freberg doing voices, handling puppets and writing for Bob Clampett's "Time for Beany" daily live television series.

He also co-wrote and voiced many of Stan Freberg’s greatest comedy records. He went on to write and voice countless television and radio commercials and voice now-classic characters for Tex Avery, Hanna-Barbera, Walter Lantz, Jay Ward and others. The successful characters he voiced are staggering in number: Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Baba Looey, Mr. Jinx, Dixie, Super Snooper, Blabbermouse, Augie Doggie, Snagglepuss, Hokey Wolf, Fibber Fox, Loop de Loop, Wally Gator, Lippy Lion, Peter Potamus, Chilly Willy, Elroy Jetson, Mr. Cogswell, Henry Orbit, Cap'n Crunch, Hair Bear, and on and on...

 TOONOPEDIA (http://www.toonopedia.com/beany.htm) reports:
Quote
Time for Beany was one of the very earliest children's television series — even Howdy Doody predated its Feb. 28, 1949 debut by less than two years.

It was produced by  veteran Warner Bros. animation director Bob Clampett, whose credits include Porky in Wackyland (1938), Horton Hatches the Egg (1942), and Russian Rhapsody (1944), where Hitler himself was the villain.

Clampett had always had an interest in puppets as well as animation; and that's the medium he chose for this show, which originally aired on Los Angeles station KTLA. Beany and his uncle, the captain of the Leakin' Lena (both voiced by Daws Butler, who also did Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear and many, many others), were marionets who sought adventure in all parts of the world, accompanied by Beany's best friend, Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent (Stan Freberg, also Joonyer Bear, Pogo's Albert the Alligator and more), a hand puppet. They were opposed by the villainous Dishonest John, also voiced by Freberg. Bill Scott, later known as the voice of Bullwinkle, did much of the writing. The show ran six years, during which it racked up an impressive total of three Emmy Awards.

Good morning, all!  And a special good morning to our DR Tomovoz!

I am going to follow yesterday's schedule and do some brain work at home this morning, then go into the NYPL for a few hours.  This evening, DR FJL, Skip, and I are seeing MARY POPPINS.  I look forward to it very much.

TOD:
BK, would you ask your MD call me so he and I can get on the same page about chords?  If the cast is learning harmonies that are not in my score,  it seems redundant for me to send vocals if they've already learned something else and it makes my life easier, of which I'm always in favor!

One of the latest Bitch fests on the Home Theater Forum "discussion" board is that there is a minute of dialogue missing fom the recent DVD release of Sweet Charity.

Some people returned the DVD. Some wrote letters. Some threatened never to buy another DVD from Universal.

What is more useless:
1) Knowing that there is a minute of dialogue missing.
2) Sitting there and comparing the LD to DVD releases. (They don't have any better to do?
3) That you actually took the time to post it on that website.

One the same site there was discussion about Flower Drum Song being finally released on DVD.

They questioned if our own esteemed BK was the first to announce its release, its bonus material and how he came by that information.

I am not a member so I can't post. But it is obvious to me. Nick Redman does the commentary track. NR & BK are friends simple as that. Case closed.

And again who cares who posted the information first. There is no money involved here.

But to put it bluntly most people at HTF are know it alls and anal rentative people who must have everything perfect on their DVDs or they will never buy from that company again, return the DVD, write letters or claim they are responsible for a DVD being released with not actually working on it. (Like a certain someone and the release of South Pacific and let's not go there about the complaints about the R2 release of the film)

Yesterday, after a full eight hours cashiering, I returned home to find der Brucer lounging on the couch.  I had thought we were going shopping for clothes, so that I can appear in my stunning best when we head up to Philly on Saturday - it's his high school reunion, and I get to be his trophy spouse!

I knew I needed pants, but he wasn't going to budge until I proved that my old suit slacks were too tight.

Yep, they were too tight.

So off we went to the outlet stores (one of the other things Rehoboth is known for, besides being a beach resort town), to find me some new pants.  Fortunately, Haggar has a store there, and they had their regular sale, two pairs for $40 (saving about ten bucks, and Delaware has no sales tax), so I got a black pair and an off-white pair, both of which I can also wear to work.

Der B, meanwhile, decided he couldn't resist getting a new pair of jeans.

Guess what.  The size he's been wearing?  Didn't fit.

Der B was chagrinned.  I just told the salesman "I guess I've been feeding us right," and he laughed and laughed.

Today, we get haircuts.  We will be stunning at that reunion, absolutely stunning!

I'm not big on these things and the weather is supposed to be lousy, but I've always wanted to ride on the Boone and Scenic Railroad and that's part of the trip, so it should be fun...here's a link to the railway http://www.scenic-valleyrr.com/  You have to click on "catch the train" to see the train

Larry, I'll be interested in hearing your take on Mary Poppins. I hear they have toned it down a little from the British production though it's still a much darker and harsher look at the story. Apparently the only way Travers would agree to a musical version (she was still alive until recently) was if Mackintosh hewed closer to the stories she wrote and less toward the Disney version. Apparently there is a scene (according to Michael Riedel) that makes some children crawl under their seats in fright.

I certainly didn't notice the missing dialog from SWEET CHARITY, but I did miss the joke in BRINGING UP BABY that was snipped out right before Susan Vance skips from the police station. That edit/cut is obvious coming in mid sentence.

I compare laserdisc to DVD usually for picture or sound sake, but it's usually a very quick comparison. I certainly don't do it frame by frame for an entire movie. THE LITTLE MERMAID was the most recent example, but the most telling comparison I've done lately was with that abominable remaster of the Todd-AO version of OKLAHOMA. The laserdisc (and first DVD release) looks a thousand times better than the recent remastering.

But every studio has made mistakes with transfers from time to time. It hurts sometimes, and it makes me mad sometimes, but to boycott a studio for doing a lousy transfer? Absurd. Each one controls too many things I love and wouldn't want to give up for some silly protest that would accomplish nothing.

I'm goin' for the cheap seats although according to this price chart from the offical Disney on Broadway site, I could sit in the Balcony F-J or even A-E and still be able to pay the rent and buy a few groceries

Orchestra - $110.00
Mezzanine AA-KK - $110.00
Mezzanine LL-RR - $80.00
Balcony A-E - $60.00
Balcony F-J - $$40.00
Balcony K-M - $20.00

I just did some research on that high school of der B's.  Among the graduates (but not in his class - so few are!):

Ed Wynn
Thomas Eakins (the painter)
Noam Chomsky
Daniel and Simon Guggenheim
Alexander Wollcott
Teller (of "Penn &" fame)
Norman Fell
and Larry Fine (prior to meeting Curley and Moe)

While Bill Cosby attended said high school, he did not graduate.  Instead, he transferred to another school, dropped out, joined the Navy, realized he needed the education after all, took a correspondence course and got his GED, and went to Temple University after that.

Re: Dancing With the STars.

DR Cillaliz i guess we shall have to disagree again.

My favorite is Mario Lopez, then joey, then monique.  I really would like jerry springer to leave tonight. I do think he has done great for his capabilities. And he is entertaining. But he is so inferior in his dancing that i just think it's time for him to go.

And while I admire emmit's work ethic, and i think he has done quite well, i really do not want him to win.  He is one of the only dancers i have never voted for.  He is good enough. But i truly don't feel he is anywhere near as good as mario.  But i think the thing that rubs me the wrong way is how popular he is. I would just rather the best dancer win vs the most popular.

And how can we forget that magnficent "The Yam"?

I would just rather the best dancer win vs the most popular.

Which is the most frustrating part of AMERICAN IDOL for me: the most popular contestant is often not the best vocalist.

But so many of these reality shows that allow for viewer votes allow popularity to trump talent. I haven't followed the show, but even a quick glance shows Mario in another league from the other male competitors.

Mario definitely moves better -- and with far more masculine grace than the professional male dancers on the show.

BUT the judges nitpick him to death.

I think CAREFREE was a deliberate attempt by RKO to change the Fred/Ginger formula. The team had fallen from 3rd at the box-office in 1936 to 7th in 1937, so clearly the public seemed interested in something new. Ginger was also notorious for wanting to break free of the team, and CAREFREE allowed her to be much more a comedienne separately than glued to Fred.

The attempt, however, wasn't successful. Neither CAREFREE nor THE STORY OF VERNON AND IRENE CASTLE ranked among the top grosses of their respective years.

The prezzydint sure is hopped up this morning.

It falls under the heading of "pre-election posturing."

It can be filed under "spin" and join the myriad occasions when the terrorist security level was raised to offset some failing poll numbers or other GOP faux pas that needed deflecting.  I'm certain he believes he "owns" the "absentee" vote.

When you were at Varese there were two compliations cds. One for Borders and the other for promotional purposes. What process did you use to choose what song went on the cds and the order of the songs chosen.

I think we did two compilation CDs for Borders - I'd have to look at them again - I just chose tracks I liked and thought would go together.

I think JRand was referring to the comment about absentee voting.

However, I know exactly what you are referring to....it was just a week ago he still insisted the U.S. would never withdraw troops from Iraq until the job was done.

Today....it's like, "What?  Huh?!!!"  Is he saying that he's prepared to bring those troops home soon?

Mark my words -- he's under severe pressure from the Republican Party to save this election -- and it's "dire straits" time.

My hope is that the U.S. voting public WON'T take him at his word -- make him DELIVER on his promises.  He needs some sort of legacy to mark his presidency...fulfilling ONE promise might do it.

I don't really have a problem with AMERICAN IDOL winners in the same way i'm annoyed by DANCING WITH THE STARS this year.

AI contestants are unknowns. At least viewers are making their own opinions.  But For DWTS, it's not really based on dancing to a certain degree.  Certain performers have fans that will vote for them no matter what.

Although i will say that i thought the first winners of DANCING WITH THE STARS were deserving.  Kelly Monaco was my favorite.  And I really liked Drew Lachey (although lisa rinna was my favorite, i thought drew was better).

I have a feeling this year will come down to emmitt vs mario. They are the two most popular. I think it will just depend on where the non-emmitt votes go (i suspect many will go to mario).

Although this year the judges votes really count for very little. So it won't really matter if they think mario is better.

At least last year because drew placed first (out of 3) among the judges, there was no way he could have lost after stacey was eliminated first (since last year they were ranked 1 thru 3 for both judges and audience).

How come it's okay for him to back track and change his mind- wasn't that behavior called fence sitting and being wishy washy in others...

Also, I am appalled by the Rush Limbaugh criticism of Michael J Fox. Appalled.

The New Republic (http://www.tnr.com/blog/theplank?pid=51219)[/b] really takes Rush to task:

(excerpts)
Quote
The ad stars the actor Michael J. Fox. In it, Fox asks voters to support McCaskill because, unlike her Republican opponent, McCaskill supports stem cell research -- which might eventually lead to a cure for Parkinson's. The ad is particularly effective because Fox is swaying back and forth during the entire ad, apparently because of the Parkinson's.

Enter Limbaugh. On today's show, while responding to some listener e-mail, Limbaugh said "when I saw the ad, I was commenting ... that he was either off his medications or he is acting. He is an actor, you know."

...

A few clicks led me to William J. Weiner M.D., professor and chairman of the department of neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He's also director of the Parkinson's clinic there.

Even better, it turns out Dr. Weiner has a phone. When I reached him, he said he'd seen the ad earlier in the day and was fairly surprised to hear about Limbaugh's reaction. Here's why:

What you are seeing on the video is side effects of the medication. He has to take that medication to sit there and talk to you like that. ... He's not over-dramatizing. ... [Limbaugh] is revealing his ignorance of Parkinson's disease, because people with Parkinson's don't look like that at all when they're not taking their medication. They look stiff, and frozen, and don't move at all. ... People with Parkinson's, when they've had the disease for awhile, are in this bind, where if they don't take any medication, they can be stiff and hardly able to talk. And if they do take their medication, so they can talk, they get all of this movement, like what you see in the ad.
...
In the meantime, Weiner also pointed out something else I hadn't considered: Fox was actually being commendably nuanced in the ad. The actor could have said stem cells will lead to a Parkinson's cure, but he said merely that it gives patients hope -- which is accurate. There's no way to know for sure what stem cells will do for Parkinson's, or other diseases, but they have the potential to do so. The only way to find out for sure is to do the research that Limbaugh and his allies are bent on blocking.

He just said people are showing up for absentee voting.

Not as strange as it sounds. Some venues permit voters to go to a counter, procure an absentee ballot, and cast same. Other places already have polling stations open for early voting - you can turn in your absentee ballot by hand or vote via touch screen.

California anticipates 50% of total votes will be cast by absentee ballot prior to Election day!

Some folks are concerned about absentee fraud; however, in some places, like CA, anyone can go to a polling station, claim to be John Doe, show no ID, and vote. Every Absentee Ballot, on the other hand, has it's voter signature compared to the signature on file at the registrar's office.

Got several things watched and cleared off the DVR. I began with last night's BOSTON LEGAL. We finally got to the end of the Scott Little murder trial.

I thought it was the mother from the beginning, and what happened after the trial cemented that in my mind. Wonder if that's the end of the story with this or will the mother's trial happen later in the season?

Boy, are the producers wasting Mark Valley in this show or what?

Next I watched ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN HOLLYWOOD. Typical silly stuff with the pair on the loose at "Mammoth Studios" (read MGM). OK but completely forgettable after the movie is over and no need ever to rewatch it.

They missed a golden opportunity to plug other MGM properties and stars by having the boys running around the lot. Oh, they run onto a set with Lucille Ball and Preston Foster being directed by Robert Z. Leonard, and they run into the MGM school with Butch Jenkins and Dean Stockwell there, but imagine all the MGM stars they could have come in contact with on their jaunt. A totally missed opportunity.

It was nice seeing Charles Walters leading the singing and dancing in the big amusement park production number (he also staged the number for the cameras).

But this movie might not have flopped if some of the studio's top talent had popped in for cameo appearances. Warners certainly got great mileage out of that gimmick for IT'S A GREAT FEELING.

Finished the afternoon watching the first 20 minutes of ON AN ISLAND WITH YOU. That's not Ricardo Montalban's voice doing the singing, but I'll have to research the voice double. Cyd Charisse in the movie makes Esther Williams look chunky and almost plain. I'm sure that didn't make Esther happy at the time. Peter Lawford and Ricardo Montalban are both impossibly handsome in Technicolor.

That is EXACTLY what sucks about AI...it's popularity and has little to nothing to do with whether the person is a better singer.

Ruben over Clay?  NO WAY!

Fantasia over anyone?

McPheever vs. the Soul Patrol?  Ring any bells?  Their fans voted for them no matter how badly they sucked on any given night.  And they both bombed badly, vocally....but never paid the price votes-wise.

Neither of them has a voice that can match Elliot's.  It was all cult of personality...SAME AS your dance show.

Just because they're peripheral celebrities doesn't guarantee them any more votes than unknowns.  AI's unknowns are quickly idolized and become celebrities every bit as well-known as Lisa Rinni or Jerry Springer or Mario Lopez...not with the duration of their celebrity status, but just as recognizable.

Good Health Vibes, TPunk!

And now, I'd like to share some news with the sweetest site on the internet (and the most popular):

Tomorrow I will receive my manager's card and the keys to Sam Morgan's Clubhouse.
I will still be serving first and foremost, but, I have elected to take on major managerial duties as well for the dining room and catered parties.
How often in life do we actually get to do those things which we passionately love to do, and get paid to do it as well?
My first solo managerial day will be Sunday, whereupon I also have a party of sixty people in the downstairs dining room; I'll be working the party with one bartender as well as opening the restaurant, getting out the cash drawers and all the other duties for start-up.

I guess I just don't like Joey and Mario..probably because from the beginning they have been held out to be the best and that this is going to be a contest between the two of them.

My mother is cheering for Emmit which both surprises me and cracks me up. She likes Mario too but wants Emmit to win, and she had no idea who either one of them were before the show started.

You have to understand, she not only watches she takes notes, does her own judging and then calls me to compare notes. LOL, it's a fun thing we do together.

As far as popularity - I don't mind it so much as a factor on Dancing with the Stars.  Unlike AI, where talent really should matter, but it doesn't and I don't even like to watch it - on DWTS they aren't competing to get a contract or become well known, they are dancing for a disco ball and maybe 15 more minutes of fame. They are celebrities doing something outside their comfort zone - well most of them. Mario has had lots of dance lessons, another reason I don't particularly think he should win. He knows how to dance already.

You have to consider this isn't just a dancing show it's entertainment. I love watching Jerry Springer. Can he dance? No, but he's very entertaining. The storyline about his daughter was touching and while it's probably time for him to go, I love that he lasted this long. The show wouldn't have been as good without him.  Emmit has fun every time he takes the floor and he almost glows. His shimmy last  night was great.  People jumped to their feet cheering, the mood in the room was electric. That didn't happen for either Joey or Mario.  Emmit clearly connects with the audience in a way most of the others don't. That's entertainment.   My 2 cents

Whoopee, huh!  In years past, I've brought potato salad (on request of organizers) but I served notice a year ago I'm tired of making it.  This year, they dared to ask someone else.

Still, they asked if I wanted to bring food (in lieu of paying for a meal), so I offered to make chili for the hot dogs.

Little do they know what's in store for them.  I'm gonna bring some chili!  And those hot dogs are going to s-i-n-g!

I think that being a pop star requires more than just having a good voice. I guess that is why i am okay with someone more charismatic doing better than someone who is dull.  Although that doesn't always even happen.

As for DANCING WITH THE STARS, I think in the same way that mario is favored because he is so good, emmitt has to be favored because he is most popular.  I'd actually never heard of mario before this show. But emmitt has millions of fans.  He is entertaining and he tries hard. BUt it just bugs me that he is almost guaranteed to win.

What I HEAR is all that matters when listening to a CD or the radio.

And then there's that "charismatic" reference.  Taylor Hicks...big old goober.  Katherine McPhee...not-as-pretty-as-she-thinks-she-is girl with an off-pitch singing style.

YUCK!  Nothing charismatic 'bout them in my book.

Fantasia charismatic?  She wishes that would happen.

Ruben charismatic?  WHO?  Ruben?  Was there a Ruben?

And as for Carrie what's-her-name who beat out Bo Bice (and Constantine Maroulis)....P-YEW!

Outside of Kelly Clarkson, the "judge-driven" winners have pretty much been a washout.

Votes...that's another false indicator of who "should" win.

Some folks call in hundreds of votes, each, for each competition...not an indicator at all of how many people like this performer or that one...but only an indicator of who has a few fans willing to call the most times to put their favorite ahead.

Well, according to the actual news report, maybe it's not such a landmark decision.

Oh, but it is, Blanche, it is!

The court has held, that based on the State Of NJ Constitution, gay men and women must be granted equal co-habitation rights.

They left it to the legislature to either:

A. Amend the law to allow same-sex marriage, or
B. Create a new civil construct for same-sex unions

Quote
The Legislature must either amend the marriage statutes to include same-sex couples or create a parallel statutory structure, which will provide for, on equal terms, the rights and benefits enjoyed and burdens and obligations borne by married couples," the court held.

The court ruled that the state does not have a "legitimate governmental purpose" in denying same-sex couples "the financial and social benefits and privileges given to their married heterosexual counterparts."

Considering that the Whacko Right went apoplectic at Condi's reference to a gay man's "mother-in-law", this ruling may require the generation of new terminology to describe their dismay!

And since this was a NJ Supreme Court ruling based on the NJ Constitution, there is no recourse to a higher court!

The anti-crowd will have no recourse but to attempt to amend the State Constitution, which I am sure they will try!

...And now, I'd like to share some news with the sweetest site on the internet (and the most popular):

Tomorrow I will receive my manager's card and the keys to Sam Morgan's Clubhouse.
I will still be serving first and foremost, but, I have elected to take on major managerial duties as well for the dining room and catered parties.
How often in life do we actually get to do those things which we passionately love to do, and get paid to do it as well?
My first solo managerial day will be Sunday, whereupon I also have a party of sixty people in the downstairs dining room; I'll be working the party with one bartender as well as opening the restaurant, getting out the cash drawers and all the other duties for start-up.
No back-up mixologist?  For sixty?

I do not envy you.  At all.   :'(

But we DID attend a very good set by a Tony Bennett accolyte at last year's Jazz Fest, here in Rehoboth.

Der Brucer and I have been clippered.  Yes, we have had our hairs clipped, each of us, and look much more smartly than we did before.

The reunion on Saturday becomes more and more an actuality.

But for now, I must prepare his dinner.   ::)

One small difference in my assessment -- Poseidon Adventure featured better acting, IMO.  No one in Towering Inferno came close to matching Hackman's performance in Poseidon.  And the combo of Astaire and Jones were no substitute for Shelley Winters and Frank Albertson.

Of course you meant Jack Albertson.
You were testing us right?

Tonight  "the 13th Warrior" came on the tv and even though we own the dvd we sat transfixed.   It is a movie that I never would have thought to have enjoyed if it had been described to me but which has become one of my favorites

I especially  love the campfire scene.

I think it is a wonderly well crafted film that beautifully tells the story of peopel learing to overcome theior differences and respect one naother's cultures, custonms and religions while seeming to be all about fighting a bunch a cannabalistic madmen .

It has great acting and no gratuitous sex, swearing or in your face over the top gore.

opinions?

We have been invited to our friends annula Halloween bash.  Our friends love Halloween and always throws a great party, it used to be adults only but since the birth of their son a couple of years ago, and thier purchase of a lovely large house with a built in ready to hand playroom they have opened it to the kiddies too.  This year they have invited the Vixter to bring two of her girlfriends along and they are all busy planning their outfits.

The ixter wanted to goa s some anime character but er were unable to find a suitable outfitm however while waiting for the AAA to rescue us at the GoodWill last Saturday... (I went to drop off three big bags of clothes, I left the Vixter inthe car and went around the back of the sattion wagon to take out the bags of clothes, leaving my keys inthe ignition, I shut the back of the car and turned around to see the Vixcter standing next to me,  She had decided to get out to help me carry, locking the car door behind her,  my keys and pocketbook safely locked inside)  ANYWAY to kill time waiitng for the AAA to show up we wandered rounf the GoodWill where we found a beautiful light blue formal dress exactly the Vixter's size and for which she already owned the perrect shoes  and it only cost $14!!

So she'll wear that along with my crysTal tiara and crystal necklace and earrings and go as Madame Pompador!

Ask BK Day:

Do you know (or did you know) an actress in L.A. by the name of CJ Hincks, or Candace Hincks, or sometimes Candy Hincks?  She did a lot of episodic TV in the 70s and 80s.

There was a popular 70s/80s actress named Catherine Hicks. Could you be talking about her? (She was in the remake of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.)

I watched 30 ROCK tonight, and I'm glad I went back one more time to it becuase it was funny tonight. Alec Baldwin set Tina Fey up with a lesbian blind date since he was convinced she was gay. The sweet, innocent NBC page beat all the guys at poker, and Alec finally foiund someone who could play in his league.

For the first time tonight, I saw some actual merit in the show.

We went to see this a few nights ago. We haven't been out to the movies in a while but a friend of mine did the sound design and I always like to see what he's up to (he won an Oscar for "Master and Commander"). We really enjoyed it, and I don't think I'm biased when I say that the sound design makes the film! I am also a Tesla fan and I didn't know that Tesla was a character in the film (played by an almost unrecognizable David Bowie) so that was a bonus. Great art direction and editing, too!

Just finished interviewing a very nice actor, singer, and Broadway performer... John Gabriel.

JRand56 may recall him as the star of Al Adamson's biker spy film HELL'S BLOODY DEVILS and as Allison Hayes' husband in an episode of 77 SUNSET STRIP!

He was also in the films THE HUNTERS, STAGECOACH (1960s version), EL DORODO, and STORY OF RUTH.

And he played the professor in the pilot for GILLIGAN'S ISLAND. However he was replaced by Russell Johnson.

I will say that the first act of Mary poppins felt very much like a concept musical, maybe even a string of songs held together by an idea and only the slightest of plots a la COMPANY.  At several points, it felt like one song could be moved fom one place to another without hurting the storytelling.  Nothing wrong with that per se, and i'm looking forward to seeing the second act to see how it all builds in a cumulative effect.

DAKOTA BAD-LANDS!

 Rapid City Journal (http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/articles/2006/10/25/news/local/news05.txt):
Quote
Judge: Todd County school district violated student’s constitutional rights
...
Attorney Dana Hanna filed the complaint last December against the school district, superintendent Richard Bordeaux, board members Randy Her Many Horses, Marlon Leneaugh, Charles Moe, Steve Her Many Horses and Troy Heinert

Ernest Doe, then 14, admitted to being one of four students who drove past Todd County Middle School late on Oct. 14, 2005, and to firing a .22-caliber rifle near the school from a moving vehicle.

This news report raise a few serious questions:

C. How amusing is it to read the Rapidy City phone directory?

After dealing with closets and primer paint that made me noxious, I went to a local production of A Chorus Line.  The only other live stage version that I've seen was a high school production that was not very good.  This production was a lot better, but still it wasn't fabulous.  They weren't wonderful dancers, but they were good...not great, but good.  The singing was better, but still, not incredible, but very good.  The acting was very good, except for Zack.  He was a little too...I don't know...much, I guess.  And the Cassie was the shortest person in the cast.  Several inches shorter than the Connie who is supposed to be four-foot-ten. ::)

And they didn't have an intermission.  I can't imagine doing the show with an intermission.  The time just flew by.  Adding an intermission would just ruin everything.  Anyway, it was great to see the whole thing in context with all the dialogue.  A thoroughly enjoyable evening. ;D

The only thing that really screamed "community theater" more than anything else were the costumes for the finale.  The men's weren't as fitted as you'd think they should be and they were one-pieces that they just slipped on.  I know that that was necessary, but several had ripped crotches, which wasn't.  Fortunately (no, really), they were wearing undergarments that were a similar color (no one was going commando ;)).

We've been purged by Mr. Mark Bakalor, but even before that happened (only fifteen minutes ago) it certainly seems that people could post photos, so not sure what was going on.
