Title: TWO TO ONE
Post by: bk on October 29, 2006, 01:18:46 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were posted late but not really, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're not used to the time change yet and are wandering around looking for the hour.

And the word of the day is: UXORIOUS!

UXORIOUS (http://www.haineshisway.com/community/index.php?board=18;action=display;threadid=1068;start=msg217666#msg217666) was also the HHW Word of the Day on July 2nd, 2006.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. ::)

;)
Title: Re:TWO TO ONE
Post by: George on October 29, 2006, 01:48:17 AM
But since it wasn't defined back then, here's the definition of UXORIOUS from m-w.com (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/uxorious):

Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin uxorius uxorious, uxorial, from uxor wife
: excessively fond of or submissive to a wife
- ux·o·ri·ous·ly adverb
- ux·o·ri·ous·ness noun
Title: Re:TWO TO ONE
Post by: George on October 29, 2006, 01:48:44 AM
And dictionary.com (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/uxorious) has a little more: "Doting upon, foolishly fond of, or affectionately submissive toward one's wife."

Yes, the party was interesting, and I now know many facts about Jane Fonda ;-P

I am glad that I went home when I did, the crazies were just leaving for their Halloween parties and now at two am (one) I am beginning to hear them come stumbling in, and I do not envy the headaches they will be complaining about in the elevator tomorrow morning.

I finished watching Rosemary's baby....wow...enough said.

A much better system then the home version, because it is the original!

You think of an object and the A.I. will try to figure-out what you are thinking by asking simple questions. The object you think of should be something that most people would know about, but, never a specific person, place or thing. "A cat" is a good object, but "Pepper," my cat, would be a bad choice. You may answer Unknown to any question, especially if you do not understand the question or do not know the answer.

Suffering from a case of insomnia so I thought I would pop in one of two DVDs an Indian freind loaned me and I was not disappointed.

I just finished watching Monsoon Wedding. Excellent movie with many layers. I greatly enjoyed this film with its smart writing, cinematography and fleshed out characters. I also enjoyed this film with is different layers and social commentary. IT is one of those films that seems to cross the language barriers as it offers commentaries to feelings that people have in all cultures.

I was puzzled by one thing by the character of Alice and her rosary. I wondered if it was paying notice to the fact some Indians are Christians.  Pretty actress!

It is a Mira Nair film that was released in 2001.

Have you seen Monsoon Wedding yet MBarnum?

I hope to watch Bride and Prejudice yet.

DR Laura...you don't change the clocks today in Arizona? How can that be? That's downright UNAMERICAN!

Greg just drove home through Indiana and said it was the same there, too. So they had to keep readjusting the time in their minds as they drove through IN. What is the world coming to? Can't we all get along? Who do they think they are, NEPAL?

Nepal is 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of GMT and 15 minutes ahead of Indian standard time. Is this their way of getting their 15 minutes of fame?

The time change apparently makes no difference to my wake-up cat, who still felt the need to get me up at the same time, no matter what the clock said. And on a Sunday, too. Evil kitty!

Good morning, all!  I've had a lovely Saturday, and I hope to have a wonderful Sunday.  I'm sipping coffee, listening to Poulenc's "Gloria," and pondering what I have to accomplish between now and Tuesday morning when I head back to Ohio.

I've a trek to Toyland this morning, a few things to do on "The Brain," and if after all that I have any energy left, I may try to set up my new non-regional DVD player.  This could be scary, since I can transpose music to any key but I cannot read an electronics assembly brochure.  I may need the assistance of DRs MBarnum, Matt H, or Rodzinski, who helped me out the last time I ended with everything connected and nothing working.

According to the paper here STUDIO 60 won't be on this week (not on tonight here or tomorrow on NBC). I think NBC is showing FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS to see if they can get more viewers.

Also has anyone seen previews for a new show about a wedding day (the day lasts the whole season). It has Marla S (formerly from the PRACTICE). I think it starts in a week, on tuesdays between DANCING WITH THE STARS and BOSTON LEGAL. I think the timeslot is a great one. And i think it looks fun (although probably more for women).

Re word of the day - From Anthony MInghella's speech accepting his Oscar for THE ENGLISH PATIENT:  "Thanks to all my family who have put up with me being away so long. Thanks to my wife who has taught me the meaning of uxoriousness."

Which had us here watching the Oscars saying:  I wish she'd teach us the meaning of that word.  What the heck does it mean?

And now here it is the word of the day twice on HHW!

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III - passed on the first two....so no chance I will watch the III.

RE: Tammy Marihugh.  Mr Robert Stack wrote in his autobiography that he was furious as Tammy's parents for allowing her to do some of the things she did in the movie, and not using a stunt double.  In fact a couple of times, Stack and Mr Marihugh almost got into a fist fight...  Marihugh WAS terrifed.  Maybe that is why she is a Vegas stripper today.

I really liked the first (Brian dePalma-directed) MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and really disliked the second (John Woo-directed) one, so I'm curious about the third one.

In the second one, the John Woo action scenes, so over the top but filmed so often in slow motion, were excruciating to sit through, and also in the second one, it seemed like every few minutes, someone was pulling off a rubber mask of someone else's face intent on fooling the other person. Ridiculous.

I think you'll like the music on the CD. After seeing the doc, I was surprised at how up a lot of the music is.  I wouldn't mind seeing the musical again. We saw it early in previews and I hear they have changed a lot. When we saw it, there were several songs that are on the CD but had been removed from the show and several added.

I've been up since early this morning, too. I brought out the ironing board and iron and pressed some things for the first time in years. Glad to know the iron still works since I've just worn permanent press things for so long. But these clothes had been sitting in a drawer all summer and needed some touching up.

Last evening, DP Kerry, DRs Laura & Sandra, and a friend of ours, all headed out to ASU to see "Hello Jerry."  Hence the pictures from DR Laura.  It was too bad, because Jerry Herman has been ill the past few weeks, and had to cancel his appearance.  And then at the last minute, Karen Morrow developed some kind of rather nasty inner ear infection, and she had to cancel also.

However, Mr. Don Pippin was at the piano, masterfully providing all of the musical accompaniment as well as filling in some of Jerry's spoken and sung material, and our very own national treasure, our shining gift, our unbelievably multi-talented .... Mr. Jason Graae...was there, as well as Paige O'Hara.

It was great to give Jason a hug afterwards and visit a little bit.  I also had a chance to say hello and introduce myself to Mr. Pippin, and to express to him my admiration for all of his contributions to a lot of Jerry Herman shows.

DR elmore..........I shamelessly dropped your name as a recent acquaintance to Don Pippin, and he was very complimentary about all of your own multiple talents!!

Due to our schedule yesterday, I wasn't able to post on what I consider my worst restaurant experience.

Der Brucer and I were seated in the lounge area of one of our favorite restaurants near our Long Beach home, Love's.  We both enjoyed their Texas ribs, and knew our doggies would also enjoy the leftover bones we would be bringing them later.

In came a crew from another restaurant, located across the street.  How did I know they were from this other restaurant?  Some of them were still in uniform, and one of them was still wearing a "manager" badge.  They took the booth directly behind ours.  They also started talking up a storm.

The color of the storm was blue.  I have never heard such filthy language!

They were blowing off steam about some of their co-workers, which I can understand.  But there is a time and a place for this sort of thing.  Another couple seated nearby consisted of an elderly woman and her husband.  She was nearly in tears, the language was so offensive.

The following day, I used one of my breaks to call the restaurant those workers were from, to inform their manager of what had happened.  I also told the manager that I would never set foot in his joint, because of their behavior.

Of course, the staff at Love's should have intervened, and told the offenders to either cut it out or clear out.  Come to think of it, we didn't re-stock on rib bones for the doggies for a while after that.

Dr Ginny, although I can see where leaving the TV on in your room, with the volume low, can be a wise idea for both men and women who travel alone; I can't see that leaving the lights on in a hotel room serves as much of a deterrent.  Most hotels have the light switch just inside the door, so guests can turn on the lights before they enter their darkened room.  The sound of voices from a TV, as well as the light from the TV screen should be enough to keep most crooks away from your room.

I watched a good many things today since I started a bit earlier than usual.

I began with SHOW BOAT, the 1951 Technicolor version. I assume Warners is remastering this for the three film SHOW BOAT DVD set we're supposed to get in the coming year. The color is ravishing in the current DVD release, but there are specks in the transfer, and the foggy scene where Julie leaves the Cotton Blossom while Joe Sings "Old Man River" plus its reprise doesn't look very good. Perhaps digital sets just have a hard time with that kind of fog, but I think the transfer doesn't help matters in that moment either.

Next, I watched the Ronald Colman version of A TALE OF TWO CITIES. Though not a complete restoration, it looks mostly fine, just a bit too grainy in a couple of spots and some noticeable scratches a couple of times.

The movie, of course, is a classic and one of my favorite Selznick films from his years at MGM.

Since I didn't watch it on Friday night when ABC showed it, I took out my DVD of IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN and enjoyed its beautiful color and funny storyline all over again.

Also on the disc is YOU'RE NOT ELECTED, CHARLIE BROWN which I have cued up to watch when I go back down later.

Who has heard the CD, and what do you think?

I really love the movie as pure entertainment and think the show would be interesting to watch. And I look forward to receiving the cast album soon.

Back from the next-to-last Cincinnati performance of Spamalot which we all found quite silly and fun.  We did not, however, see as King Arthur the much-praised (in the local papers and here on HHW) Michael Siberry.  We saw, instead, his understudy Christopher Gurr.

MOI?

I am simply trying to save you from the potential dire consequences of referring to "Daylight Savings Time":

The Uniform Time Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Time_Act) (Pub.L. 89-387, April 13, 1966, 80 Stat. 107, 15 U.S.C. § 260a) is a 1966 United States federal law whose effect was to simplify the official pattern of where and when Daylight saving time (DST) is applied within the U.S.

Un-American references to "Savings" might be construed as a violation of Federal Law, and the miscreant reported to the Feds under the Patriot Act - and if you don't think stuff like this can happen, you need to watch Fox News more often :-*

REUNION TALE

We checked into the Reunion Booth to get our passes for the Barnes Museum. I commented that I was debating driving or taking the train. "Oh, you should drive!" was the comment. "Might there not be a problem with parking?", I asked. "Oh, no!" was the reply, "Just tell them your from Central." (Note: the Barnes web site was very clear that parking is regularly full and visitors were turned out into the hostile environs to fend for themselves.) One of my hosts noted to to me that the West River Drive was closed, and that I should consider taking the East River Drive. I commented that I intended to just whip up on Interstate 76 to City Line Ave. "Oh, God, no, the traffic will be horrible" was the reply.

Not one to take advice, we headed to the regional commuter train station (a short 6 blocks away). My MedicareCard got me a Ticket for $1.00 and Woody had to pay all of $3.00.

The train was clean and pleasant - the ride a scant 20 minutes. We then had to hoof it to the museum (less than a mile away). The morning rains had ended, the air was crystal clear, and the autumn's foliage a delight.

Views from the walk:

As you can see, Philadelphia's Main Line still retains the rustic charm of its humble beginnings.

PS It seems most people think that anyone who would take Public Transit when they had a car available was an idiot. (When we arrive at the museum gate, we were re-directed to the parking area to pick up our passes!)

I also stand corrected & won’t say “savings” anymore.  It does seem as if it should be plural.

For those of you, like myself, who prefer to stay on daylight saving time all year:

"Under a law passed last year, daylight-saving time will start the second Sunday in March and run until the first Sunday in November, making it three weeks longer."
Title: Re:TWO TO ONE

It does seem as if it should be plural.

Since you asked 8)

 SPELLING AND GRAMMAR (http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html)

Quote
The official spelling is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time.

Saving is used here as a verbal adjective (a participle). It modifies time and tells us more about its nature; namely, that it is characterized by the activity of saving daylight. It is a saving daylight kind of time. Similar examples would be a mind expanding book or a man eating tiger. Saving is used in the same way as saving a ball game, rather than as a savings account.

Nevertheless, many people feel the word savings (with an 's') flows more mellifluously off the tongue. Daylight Savings Time is also in common usage, and can be found in dictionaries.

Adding to the confusion is that the phrase Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate, since no daylight is actually saved. Daylight Shifting Time would be better, but it is not as politically desirable.

REUNION PART TWO

I recently receive notice that my AmericaWest (now US Air) airline frequent flier miles would expire if I had no account activity before the end of the year. I have accumulated 59,576 miles, just a short of what I need for two round trip tickets (US Mexico, Caribbean, Central America. They do have a special dining awards program that lets me get 3 miles for every buck spent at a participating restaurant. Now $150 on a few dine outs to get the miles is well worth it

After leaving the Barnes we hitched a ride back to Philly with a retired Neurosurgeon (remember my class was 9 about 92% good Jewish boys) and decided to do a walk-about and check on some candidate restaurants. (We visited The Bleu Martini which showed promise, and Barney's Place which is a neat Irish Pub). On the walk we came across Central Alumni Larry Fine's haunts:

Philly use to be known as a very reserved, conservative blue-laws kind of place. Ladies had to enter taverns through separate entrances.

I guess times have changed

DARN! I played too much 20 questions today, and did not beat the machine once! :P

I finished rewind, very fun and very smooth read. I loved the layout and...wait, anyone interested can read my amazon review as soon as I write it, probably tonight.  ;)

I went to a 50th anniversary party for INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS at the lasky demill barn tonight, and the first half was very interesting, all clips of the bronson caves in different movies, including the BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS.

The main film of the night was a comedic spoof on 50's sci-fi movies, but it was not a well written musical. It was THE LOST SKELETON OF CADAVRA, and though it was good spoofwise, it moved too slow to really be potent.

Have a nice night! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What about "Entering Grey Gardens" - might have worked for Michael B

It is one hour later than the clock says.

DRGEORGE - I enjoyed the PLAID clips.  There are certainly some less than spectacular casts of the show on YOUTUBE.

You got that right!!

DR DakotaCelt, I have seen MONSOON WEDDING..didn't really care for it too much...I did enjoy BRIDE AND PREJUDICE...not a great movie, but a good time killer...the musical number at the engagement party was fun though!

I think most people say "savings" - but some of our hainsies/kimlets are STICKLERS!

You say "sticklers," I say anal retentive.

(And yes, I'm speaking for myself...sometimes.) ;)

Today, I was at my former place of residence painting stuff and replacing light fixtures.  I had to remove and replace five light fixtures.  Fortunately, it mostly went smoothly with the help of my niece.  However, one of the old glass covers broke, but since it was going to be thrown away anyway, I just had to make sure I vacuumed up all the glass.  Then, as I was putting in the new fixture for that old fixture, I dropped the light bulb, caught it in the new glass cover and the bulb shattered!  The glass cover is fine, but that's twice that something broke in the same day...and in the same room!  What does this mean?? :o

It means that I had to vacuum the room twice, is what it means. :P

And in my new mailbox at my new place, I got some mail yesterday!  Actually, I got a couple of packages!  Two DVDs that I had ordered from DeepDiscountDVD.com ("Kids in the Hall" and "Ellen," both seasons four) and two CDs from Amazon Marketplace ("Happy Endings: Comic Chamber Operas (http://www.amazon.com/Happy-Endings-Comic-Chamber-Operas/dp/B0000049P4/ref=sr_11_1/102-7422810-3076119)" and the BK produced I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, which I have never even heard).

But names will never hurt me."

And then (after changing the light fixtures), I disassembled the shelf unit (that I got several years ago from Ikea) that holds my records so that it would be a lot easier to move it up the stairs where I want it to go.  I put it all back together without any trouble (or extra or missing parts).  The records were moved to my new place last week, so now they'll have some place to live again. :)
