Well, you've read the notes, the notes jumped the gun which is, I suppose, better than the gun jumping the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the mutant cows come home - or should that be the MOOtant cows?

Favorite Halloween adventure: Greg and I worked on a documentary in Oaxaca immediately after a small earthquake. We shot in cemeteries during "Day of the Dead" and had lots of Mexican families make us welcome in their homes. A beautiful time to be in Mexico.
Title: Re:THE MUTANT MOUSE
Post by: Edisaurus on October 30, 2006, 04:45:40 AM
Our favorite Halloween costumes: I was a scarecrow, with a big burlap head, and Greg was a crow. I used to really enjoy inventing and making costumes but now it seems like too much work!

When I was making the wings for Greg's crow, I told him I wished we had some real feathers. We went out to the fabric and craft store to see if we could find any. I found a black feather boa to dismantle, so we came home.

The music room was covered in a light dusting of feathers. Our aged cat must have heard his cue to provide a service, so he brought in a dove and slaughtered it in the house.

Months later, we were still finding feathers behind pieces of furniture, picture frames. etc. I'm sure whenever we move, we will find a few more!

Least successful costume: I thought it would be interesting to dress as members of the Heaven's Gate cult, with black Nikes®, purple shrouds (emblazoned with the words "Just did It") and dead makeup underneath, carrying applesauce and vodka. But since the story happened so early in the year, nobody knew what we were supposed to be!

Note about all of these costumes: it's better to have a costume in which you can eat or drink without dismantling your head.

My Best Individual costume: I made an outfit out of a black bodysuit and covered it with 35 and 16mm film. This was the year "Edward Scissorhands" came out, so I dressed as him, but was covered in film. I wielded huge garden shears and called myself "Amy Splicerhands". I would occasionally edit my costume and give a few frames of film (probably some crappy film I worked on!) to friends at the party. I was quite menacing but sweet.

Good morning, all!  I love having an earlier bit of daylight, and I love Halloween.  There were all these spooky shows on tv as I surfed the channels last night.

DR MBarnum, nearly everything you watch frightens me!

DR George, congratulations on the new mailing address! That's a good sign.  If you don't know Menotti's THE TELEPHONE, it's wonderful, especially the big aria "Hello? Hello? Oh Marguerite, it's you."

Today, I have to assemble my travel materials: the work I'll take with me, things for my student visit on Friday, all my meds, by Brain CD (with bonus material).  I have a stop at Toyland for a couple of hours, then I come back, perhaps try to connect the new DVD player, tidy a bit, and begin packing.  Tomorrow, I'll need all the travel vibes you can send: the older I get, the more I hate flying.  I'm neurotic enough.

TOD:  I don't have a favorite but I have good memories of several:
  1.  the sweet, vinegary smell of the syrup, and my mother and Aunt Jenny buttering their hands to make popcorn balls for my mother's favorite kids when they showed up that night
  2.  Trick or treating after dark with my brother Tom and the Hawkins boys on Goldman Avenue; at one house - what was their last name? - when a crowd had assembled at the front door for candy, the man who owned the house came screaming down the driveway wearing a skull's mask and sheet and scrred the hell out of us.
  3.  Marching in the Village Halloween Parade the first year I lived in Manhattan; Kayper Wilson (where is show now?) and I sewed bib overalls together so we could go as siamese twins.  It's a bitch to move; how did those Hilton girls do it?

Hey There! Ho There! Hi There!

Lovely pictures Tom!

I'm not sure about worst and best halloweens.  One I enjoyed was at a costume party.  I went as Mary Hartman (apparently my alter ego at the time).  It was a great party, and I remember getting somewhat stuck in a crowded small hallway with my face pressed against the naked back of a lovely man dressed as a baby (as I recall).  He had a beautiful back, and it was nice to have the opportunity to see it so closely.    Silly thing to remember, I suppose, but it seemed to be the highlight of the party.  He and his wife were both very sweet people too.

Best Halloweens may have been taking my nephew out trick or treating a few years.  Very happy times.

DR Sandra has a lovely costume for tomorrow. I will post a photo of her in it. I, sadly, have grown up and do not wear a costume at Halloween.

I am looking forward to the Jewish-Vietnamese children from next door coming to trick-or-treat. I have a special treat for them.

The neighborhood I live in is known as one of the best places to trick-or-treat  in the area. I don't know how we got our reputation, but we get HUNDREDS of visitors. My neighbors often dress in costume, but we never know who will dress as what until the actual night. Dracula is popular, as are witches. We now have a pirate couple, as well. And those are just the residents. There's usually a party down the street for said residents, with or without costumes. It's fun. Always lots of dogs in costume, too.

When I lived in Flatbush in the 1960's, trick-or-treating was a very social thing, and kids who really didn't necessarily play with each other during the year somehow banded together in this group and went from house to house, most of which were decorated for Halloween to some extent.   We moved to a neighborhood with large apartment buildings when I was ten years old, and somehow trick-or-treating wasn't the same in apartment buildings.

I have no memories of the costumes I wore as a kid on Halloween. I knew I stopped going out after the year I was in the sixth grade.

As an adult, the three most memorable costumes I can remember putting together were a convict, a boxer, and Merlin which is my all-time favorite. My partner at the time took some pictures, but they are long since gone.

You "had lots of Mexican families make us welcome in their homes"?  How brutal!  How forceful!  I'm certain, had you simply asked, they would have done so without coersion!  (Of course, there's always that awkward language barrier thing.  Not to be confused with an awkward language barrio thing, which is quite different.)

I know I didn't get all of WITHOUT A TRACE last night. THE DVR had "No Data" in the 11 p.m. and 11:30 slots and wouldn't allow me to program it to record those since nothing was listed.

I know the NFL ran late on CBS in this market, so I will be missing WITHOUT A TRACE. Haven't decided if I'll watch what I got of it, or skip it altogether and make a note to watch for the rerun when I comes around.

I finally did get my Amazon shipping notice for the Astaire-Rogers boxed set of feature films. I had complained to them last week about the delay and was informed that they had a large demand for the sets with the empty slim cases in them and had to restock. Since my pre-order was far down the list, I had to wait my turn. Irritating but understandable.

Good morning dear Esteemed, rested, blocked, and rarin'-to-go BK --

You were a wise mensch to take a day yesterday, and shun the outside technology and intrusion of the world!  You will be much the better for it.

Your brain cells for The Brain will be much sharper..... your sense of smell will delight in some perfectly wonderful aroma that shall waft before you.....your taste buds shall savor a perfectly prepared morsel of something today.... your already schoene punim is now even more "schoene" than before.....your sculpted abs have added  2 more items to their 8-pack.....and your buns of steel could now out-do a 90 ton stamping press at a General Motors factory!

You sound in rather stellar shape Kiddo !

TOD :

I haven't done "dress-up" for quite a few years....the last time was for my sweet and wonderful nephew at one of his "themed" birthday parties.  I was Darth Vader....the costume was very accurate and complete.....I almost died from the heat in it!  But my nephew thought I was very cool, and that was all that mattered!! :)

For my own choices, DP Kerry will attest to the fact that I'm a sucker for anything involving a cape.  Go figure!!

When she was a child, one of Sybil's personalities had the INCHOATE notion if she said the right NICE OATH she could cure anything that hurt her.  For example, if she were to stub her CHINA TOE, the correct words would turn that ACHE INTO the ability to dance like a ballerina.  Sybil's mother just thought she was crazy.

Mawnin', all!

Oh, hallowe'en!!! the best of all holidays! The costumes, the scenery, the makeup, the props!!! Hallowe'en is very likely why I love showbiz! Oh, the costumes!!!

A few weeks ago I was looking at some of the photos of my siblings and me, as little tykes at hallowe'en - how we (of course, I mean "I") all looked forward to that, every year. Hallowe'en and ballet recitals. So, one photo was of the four of us (Mom had four kids in five years... ): Tami and I were in identical Dutch Girl outfits, Rikki was an angel, and Mike was in a little orange and black Harlequin costume my mom had made for Rikki the year before.

Another picture was of me, the year I was 9 and made my own costume: I was s circus bareback rider, and made the horse out of a broomstick, some wire hangers for the shoulders and hips, strips of an old bedsheet for legs, and a paper shopping bag for a head.

But last year, in Lahaina was pretty sensational: 30,000 people parading down mainstreet, with teams of people dressed as libraries, where the "books" open, and the characters come out. That was pretty swell. there was a team dressed as The Mad Hatter's Tea Party! Some really unbelievably imaginative and intricate costumes. I, myself, went as a fairy, with huge double pink gauze wings, encrusted with sequins of all sizes. The wings took me nearly a week to make. Worth it!

Monday morning greetings!  Today is my day off - slept in and now I'm puttering.

TOD - Since I grew up in Detroit, my Halloween costumes had to permit dressing for cold weather - no flimsy fairy princess costumes!  One year, I decided to be a majorette and modified my winter jacket to look like a band uniform.  I made a tall hat out of an oatmeal box covered in leftover shag carpet and topped with glitter.  It looked great, but really hurt my head.

The most interesting halloween costume I had was when my freind Sandy, her brother Keith and I dressed up as characters from Doctor Who..  I was Leela and man was that get up COLD in North Dakota.  However, one of their freinds had created a Davros costume that popped over in the elevator and we had to extract the chicken wiring from the carpeted walls.

DR Ginny, I hear you on cold, growing up in ND, I often had to wear winter gear under my costume. One year we had 15 inches of snow on the ground already.

One year, when I was in college, I went to a costume party as a slug!  A couple of years before, I had been given a knitted cap that had stuffed, cloth slug feelers sewn on the top of it and I used plastic garbage bags as the body and plastic wrap as the slime trail.  It was really a simple but fun costume.  Everybody loved it!  When I moved back home after I graduated from college, I lost the slug hat. :(

My costume has a kitten on it, and I can vaguely recall picking it out at the store. I am sure my father was greatly disappointed.

I do not have a clue as to what my brother is supposed to be, but I think that is my bathrobe he is wearing!

I love the slug costume. I may steal that one!

We usually go to Halloween parties with a large contingent of gay men. They have all the best costumes!

The year that the Statue of Liberty had its extreme makeover (76?) a friend of mine went to a party as the statue. He was very tall, and he surrounded himself with scaffolding. Very impressive!
Other favorites I've seen are a pair of high heels, with the guys' bodies as the heels and the huge shoes in rollers in front of them, the "girl in the radiator" from "Eraserhead", a male and female plug and socket (when they plugged in, bulbs lit up on top of their heads), a guy dressed as a swami on rollerblades surrounded by a small carpet that stuck straight out on all sides and little fake legs crossed on top so it looked like he was on a flying carpet, a flasher with a huge fake penis that contained a canister of "Silly String" (you can just imagine...), a handsome black man dressed in jockey gear and carrying a lantern,  posing as a lawn jockey. The list goes on...

CNN also has good parties---you dress as a news story. Usually they're pretty sick (wet stewardesses when there's an aircrash, etc.) but those people are under a lot of stress working there, so it's a way to make light, for a day, of the grim stuff they cover. White tie and tails, white gloves, Cabbage Patch Doll.....going of course as:

The Valet of the Dolls.

Black turtleneck and Greek Fisherman's Cap....blue/white face, white gloves....going as:

A Titanic drowning victim.

I will wear my costume to work tomorrow and try to have a photo taken.....until then it is a secret.  BUT the next Halloween party I go to....I will be Lucy as Superman!  Football helmet, plaid Bermuda shorts and all!!

Because my father was a pharmacist, he had all sorts of mad scientist-type beakers and liked to dress up and invite the children inside to his "laboratory" which had lots of dry-ice in colored water filling the beakers. We had scary lights and music, and the tradiitonal bowls full of spaghetti and peeled grapes for brains and eyeballs. My brother would sit with his body under the table and his face caked with so much makeup that it looked like a fake head. When children were invited to take some candy from the bowl, they had to reach past my brother's head. He would come to life and snap at them. Kids would run screaming from our house, leaving a trail of candy all the way to the street.

The only thing better than being scared is scaring someone else!

DR FJL, I never know what's being broadcast until I see the info in OPERA NEWS.  I have heard nothing about a broadcast of this production, but it would be nice: it's starring Mr Juan Diego Florez, the best bel canto tenor and the most photogenic tenor working at the moment.  The Met's pushing his photo in all the ads.

And good news: I now have a working nonregional DVD player that operates!  Who'da thunk it?

I did find a nice line from  Peter Filichia (http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm?int_news_id=2724):

Quote
Remember that Halloween when you were nine? You probably don't, and I know I sure can't. But Eve Harrington did in the musical Applause, where she sang a Strouse-and-Adams song called "One Halloween" that told about what happened on that Halloween when she was nine. She dressed herself in a fairy queen costume -- only to have her father chide, "You look like a whore." So, Eve said, she washed her face, took off her dress, and threw it away. She also apparently started that night on the road to becoming a scary person worthy of the scariest Halloween.

There's apparently a BARBER OF SEVILLE video which they sell on the Met Opera site that features Florez, but I don't think it's the Bartlett Sher production.

But they're charging $205 per ticket to sit in row S (why do people complain about Bway prices but rarely complain about opera prices - or do they complain and I just haven't noticed?).  So maybe I'll hold off and catch it in its spring engagement if a telecast doesn't happen.

DR FJL, I own the DVD you mention; the production is from Madrid, I believe, and it's a bit too artificial for my taste.  The cast is good.  If you're thinking about later in the season be sure Mr Florez is in it.  He's also wonderful in a beautiful DVD of Verdi's glorious FALSTAFF, based on Shakespeare's "Merry Wives of Windsor."

Here's what I love: I got an e-mail from the Simply Sondheim producer saying that a friend had ordered the CD over a month ago and never received it, but that their credit card had been charged.  I do understand that stuff happens, which is why I always ship with delivery confirmation - very easy to check.  In any case, I said for the gentleman to drop me a line.  In the meantime she gave me his name.  I went out and spent twenty minutes going through the invoices - nothing.  I then spent another twenty minutes going through paypal's records - nothing.  So, he either thinks he ordered it and didn't, he ordered it under another name, or he ordered it elsewhere - the one thing we KNOW is that he did not order it from Kritzerland and that his credit card was not charged by paypal.  I suspect the answer will be that he ordered it elsewhere.

DR FJL, I see a lot of dress rehearsals at the Met and I sit everywhere depending on the tickets.  If you want a good look at the production, the closer the better.  I must say, the cast looks wonderful.

OK, Der B and Woody---I just now HAD time to re-read what I wrote and see why you're nitpicking me!

Greg gives me a hard time when I misuse had as well. Like last year, when I was in a bad car wreck...I keep saying that "I had a guy total my car", when he really ran a red light and totalled it. It was a new car...but it sounded like I paid him to hit me!

It's Tommy Rettig as Bartholomew Collins, the hero of "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T".

(Poor Tommy...gone too soon...)

The preschool is very excited about Halloween tomorrow. We're wearing our costumes tomorrow for the Halloween parade. We're going to walk up and down the sidewalk and wave at cars.

Brandon is very excited about dressing as Spiderman tomorrow. The girls are coming as the usual assortment of princesses, ballerinas, and so on. I asked Cameron what his costume was and he said, "Ganch."

You have to remember that he's three years old and it sometimes takes a couple tries before you can understand what he's saying.

I said, "What?"

He said, "Ganch."

I said, "What's ganch?"

He said, "Ganch."

Okay...

Dictionary.com defines "ganch" as: To drop from a high place upon sharp stakes or hooks, as the Turks dropped malefactors, by way of punishment.

I don't know how he's going to dress up as that.

I really must pay attention to what is going on in my kitchen.  Right now, I'm roasting a turkey breast.  To go with said breast, I will prepare some stuffing (StoveTop, I confess), mushroom gravy (from scratch), and sauteed apples.

Just another typical day in my kitchen.   8)

Good Evening....  Edi - yesterday was beautiful...in the 70s, Paul started painting the bomb shelter and was planning to finish today. Alas, although it was 63 at noon, it was down to about 40 degrees by the time he decided to paint again at about 3:00 PM. Too cold to paint outside. The wind is howling and it's getting colder and colder. Luckily the wind is blowing away from my house and toward the neighbor who still has a yard full of leaves.

Dogs in costume?  Sounds like some parties I have attended.

TOD - one of my most memorable Halloweens as a child was when it snowed, but we still went trick or treating. I don't have the photo here, but there is one of me standing on our porch in my snow boots and parka with the fur around the hood, wearing one of those dime store costumes that ties in back - I was a gypsy and had a plastic gypsy mask on.  Looking back it's really funny, at the time it was cold, but we were going to trick or treat

We used to go all over town trick or treating when was about 11 or 12. There was a lady who lived in a guest house behind her parents' house. She had some sort of disability, but I don't remember what it was. I just remember she needed to be close to home because of medical issues.  Anyway, she put on THE BEST party of all and no one was invited, you just had to know to go to her house trick or treating and you were invited in.

Her hobby was writing scripts for Bonanza.  I know she sent them in, I doubt they went anywhere, but she used to read them to us if we'd stop by her house on the way home from school.

As an adult I've done a few fun costumes. I had a great slinky black night gown that I used to use as a female vampire outfit. Not really Elvira, but along those lines.  I wore that back when I was skinny and sexy.  I had a blast last year as Alice in Wonderland.  It was a kick.    This year, I'm staying home.  I don't really even know of any parties and don't know of any that happened over the weekend. I think that people are Halloweened out.

Had a nice evening of viewing.

I began with the first episode from the Season 2 set of CSI: NY. The show brightened its look considerably for the second season, and that look is readily apparent from the very first episode.

The episode is one I saw a couple of times last season: the death of a man attempting to climb the Empire State Building. His death was actually the result of another murder in which the murderer was very obvious though not for the suspected motive.

COLD CASE had the story of a 1950s radio DJ who died during one of his broadcasts. The initial report listed suicide, but now the detectives suspect it was murder. Surprising murderer in this. Julie Adams was the primary guest star.

HEROES had a gripping episode with the always welcome Hiro and some interesting developments with the Claire storyline. And even Niki was more interesting tonight than usual.

But I REALLY missed Adrian Pasdar (the flying man) and Greg Grunberg (the telepathy cop) this week. Glad to see them in the previews.

Finished the evening watching tonight's JUSTICE which featured a modified story based on the John F. Kennedy Jr. airplane crash of several years ago. Denis O'Hare was the defense attorney (always great to see him), and Kate Burton was taking a leave of absence from GREY'S ANATOMY in order to p[lay the mother of thefiancee killed in the plane crash.

I forgot to mention that in the thirty minutes I had to wait before HEROES came on, I flipped over to ESPN2 and watched the men's short program from Skate America which was held this past week. I knew the results already, but it was still interesting to see them skate.

DUring the broadcast, Dick Button mentioned that both Timothy Goebel and Michael Weiss will not be competing at the nationals; I'm assuming they've retired from amateur skating, and high time, too!

Tomorrow at work, we're having a costume contest and pumpkin goodie potluck.  I didn't have any time to make/bake anything so I won't partake of the goodies, but if my white shirt is clean enough (and since I have absolutely NOTHING else to make into a costume), I'll wear my white shirt and black pants and be dressed up as an usher!  I usher a lot here in town and it's a perfectly legitimate costume. ;) That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. ;D

Some people (a Sondheim reference) in past years have made some pretty elaborate costumes.  One guy last year dressed up in drag and was very popular...and he's straight! ;) One woman dressed up as "the girl with the pearl earring" and another woman dressed up herself as a bee keeper and brought her puppy dog dressed as a bee and they both had letters of the alphabet all over them.  She was a spelling bee!  Cute, huh? :)
Title: Re:THE MUTANT MOUSE
Post by: George on October 31, 2006, 12:18:58 AM
Last year, one of the costume categories was best literary costume.  The spelling bee and the girl with the pearl earring were from last year.  We also had a (now former) employee dress up in a devil's mask and she carried a dictionary around with her.  She was The Devil and Merriam-Webster!

Remember, no groaning allowed. ;)
