Well, you've read the notes, you know the whole plot, you know the topic, so go to it and let's have a plethora of postings, shall we?

DR Jose: I was just about to reply when the topic was locked! I don't know what I'm supposed to answer though! You had me hooked at pizzelles! I'm Italian-American, and I grew up on pizzelles and biscotti. My grandma makes batches all the time! Sooooooooo good!

My fave Christmas songs: O Come, O Come Emmanuel, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, O Holy Night, among others. I can't think of versions now.

Maya and I have a request for all of you DRs. A friend of ours was quite upset today. He didn't go into much detail, but he was physically (and emotionally) hurt. If you wouldn't mind, please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. He is such a sweet guy, and what happened was so terrible. :(

OOohh... It wasn't my mom making pizzelles.. Sorry, Laura... Rather it was my brother, Don, trying out that "really expensive Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookie recipe"!  -They're sooo good... and who cares if they really are or aren't Needless Mark-Up's recipe... and they're sooo many of them.. And they're still warm....

Mmm, Jose! I want cookies! All this talk of holiday treats is so tempting. I will *not* go upstairs for snacks. I will *not* go upstairs for snacks...(repeating this mantra)

Laura - Who was in the cast of Plain Tidings?

And even though I should not have had those cookie(s) right before going to bed...

Good Night.
Bonne Nuit.
Jó éjszakát!
Guten Nacht.
Buenas Noches.

And my thoughts are with "our friend".  Peace.

Plain Tidings? I have no idea. :( Sorry about that, Jose! Btw, I would love to go see Camelot and to meet you, but I don't think I have a way to make it to DC. :( I would certainly love to meet you, though!

Jose wrote yesterday (actually, less than two hours ago):

Oh, and just last night, the local public radio station played a song called, "The 12 Steps of Christmas".  I need to find that recording!  Made me laugh out loud.

If you heard the same recording that I have, it's on the CD "A Christmas Survival Guide:  Anxiety, Isolation, Desperation...The Musical!"  It's sung by Janet Metz and is really hysterical.  The CD says that it's "A small show for a cast of three, (but we used twenty three)."

There's a website www.christmassurvival.com/ and it has samples of the songs under the links for "Songs" and "Order CD".  I highly recommend it!

Such nice pictures.....Swedish Chef's Hat!  Even lovelier in person.

Jed - and to think that the set is now struck!

Such wonderful posts and stories.  I love to start my day at HHW.  And I hope everyone keeps practicing their dances!  And yes the twirl is especially interesting!  ;D

My favorite Christmas songs...hmmmmmmmmm.....

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Doris Day, Judy Garland

that will start me out.

And just because:

Peyton Place, of course - Bus Stop - The Best of Everything - Love Is a Ball - Pocketful Of Miracles - The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.  And not to perpetuate old gossip, but at least the readers on this site will know who I am writing about - the lover of John Cheever.

RIP - Ms Hope Lange!

Some of my favorite Christmas songs come from the movies and Broadway. (A nice Jewish boy really shouldn't like the "traditional" songs). A good selection but not all my favorites are found below:

I think it's called Christmas Dinner, and it's done by Peter Paul and Mary on the Peter Paul and Mommie album.  An unbelievably moving narrative.  I challenge anyone to listen to the whole thing without crying.

And that's what makes a great Christmas song.

Thank you so much for trying to get me Matt Bogart's CD for me  !  From the speech at the end, he sounded like just a really funny guy.  A wonderful dining companion I would imagine!

DR maya - - my best friend in Cincinnati KNOWS all of the Bogart family!  maybe she can hook you up with Matt's fiancee-less brother. . .wouldn't that be better than a cd? !? ! ?

Traditional Christmas Carols:
Some Children See Him (Nancy LaMott)
Silent Night (Oh, nearly anyone's)
O Holy Night (David Phelps; and for those of you who haven't heard this, find it, check it out).

ladodgerjon--

Congratulations and thanks for the pics.   The black and white one of the hands is wonderful.   That's the moment they hook you for good.  You might as well just give up and give in after that.  Such love.  It's a trick babies learn just before they came down from heaven-- it's passed on to them.  Puppies( of all ages) and babies pass these tricks on to the new ones, and they always work !!!!!

It would be too easy to say "Is that a trumpet in your tights, or are you just glad to see me?"......so I won't.  On the other hand, as the immortal Miss Mazeppa said, "If you gotta bump it, bump it with a trumpet."

Great pics last night and this morning, but DR Jed's purple tights have to take the prize. You could be King Henry VIII, DR Jed! I thought of Keith Michell the moment I saw the pic.

Favorite Christmas song, bar none, is "Do You Hear What I Hear? by Bing Crosby. I don't feel in the Christmas mood until I hear it every holiday season.

I adore Andy Williams' two classics: "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and "The Holiday Season." And Judy's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is unmatched. I love her "Merry Christmas" from IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME, too. An odd title to a movie that takes place mostly during the winter months and holidays.

Oh, favorite Christmas songs...We Three Kings, Carol of the Bells, Snowfall.

Anything by the Harry Simeon Choral is great, and that song by the misfit toys in the old Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer special.

Good morning, good yawning!

I had the BEST sleep ever last night.  My head hit the pillow and I was out until 9:30am.  9:30 is a good time to wake up because it gives you just enough sleep without going overboard and ruining the pattern for the rest of the week.  From now on I will try to get up everyday at 9:30...

John - those pics are adorable and especially the one with your two hands.  You must get that framed or laminated or something...

I think the best way to get rid of these passport/birth certificates/border crossing issues is to simply become American.  Who wants to marry me so I can get a green card and be on my way towards citizenship? ;)

Favorite Christmas Songs/Hymns/Carols:

1) "Minuit Chrétienne" (aka "O Holy Night") which HAS to be sung in the original french... the English lyrics are okay but the French are much much better suited to the music and the actual holiday.  Plus MC is traditionally sung with a solo performer who gets answered by a choir while I have only ever heard the English one without the choir repeating the chorus ("peuple à genoux" & "peuple debout", "fall on your knees")

2) "Hark the Herald Angels Sing!"

3) "O Come All Ye Faithful / Adeste Fidelus"

4) "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" - because there is no better guilty pleasure during the Holidays

I'm off to lunch with the little sister (Subway, of course!) and then to grind away at gun control.  I will probably make an appearance at chat if it happens tonight.

:D

As I have said before, my favorite Christmas song is "Hurray for Santy Claus" from my favorite Christmas movie "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians".

Last year when I posted that I got an e-mail from a lurker asking if I had the lyrics.  Like a good Hainsie-Kimlet I transcribed the lyrics from the videotape and sent them for which I never even received a thank you.  However since I have them transcribed and in a computer file I'll be happy to send them to any DR or DL (dear lurker) who wants them.

Matt -
It was a lurker or someone who found my reference during an internet surf.  I've had nothing but good experiences with any DR... and a few lurkers as well.  And it didn't really bother me, as at least I now have the lyrics typed out in a file.

I know that there are many Connie Francis fans on this here site.  Footlight Records has a new Connie Francis CD of a European concert listed on their site as a Footlights exclusive.  Check it out if you are interested: www.footlights.com - it's currently the first listing in the New Releases section.

The pictures of little Jack made me really smile. Thanks, Jon.

We don't make a big production of Christmas. I'm Jewish and Gord swings both ways (Jewish maternal grandmother; Protestant everyone else). Still, every year we like to prepare a pre-holiday turkey dinner. This year we invited a family from the building and Gord's nephew and gang for a grand total of 13. Gord came down with a dreadful cold on Saturday morning, I said go to bed and "just leave everything to me" (a Hello Dolly reference). I have no idea how I managed it (guests set the table and mashed the potatoes while I carved),  but at 6 pm Saturday night we sat down to a festive and pretty respectable meal.

Favorite Christmas carol: "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."

What a swell place this is!  Talk about gaining support from a group of friends!  Dear Readers S. Woody White, George, Ann, JRand53, TD, Music Guy, Maya, MBarnum, Jennifer, Dan-in-Toronto (and Dear Dog Archie the Spaniel), Jose and Kerry:  Roller and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your good wishes.

When I went to see Roller yesterday, he was a completely different dog than the one I dropped off the night before.  He had energy, his curiosity was back, and he was eager to go on the little walk I took him on.  He remained at the emergency vet last night so he could continue on the IV.  This morning I picked him up and he seemed to be pretty much himself.  I brought him to his regular vet for further tests and observation.  I will find out later today whether he will spend tonight at home or in the hospital.

I feel confident that Roller will recover and be home soon.  Blackjack (Roller's offspring) and I have missed him and we look forward to being our complete family of three once again.

Dear Reader Jose--Here is the complete casting of Plaid Tidings, which I saw last night in the very pleasant company of Dear Readers Laura and Sandra:

Jinx:  Stan Chandler
Smudge:  David Engel
Frankie:  John-Michael Flate
Sparky:  William Akey

The very able David Snyder was on the piano and John Smith was on bass.

The show was marvelous!  All four performers did very well.  The story and songs have been tightened up as compared with the effort I saw a couple of years ago, when it was still called The Holiday Edition of Forever Plaid.  There's a new interlude that involves Rosemary Clooney sending messages to the Plaids from heaven.  And, in my book, the three minute seventeen second rendition of the "Ed Sullivan Show" remains some of the most brilliant comedy I have ever seen.

Meeting Dear Readers Laura and Sandra was quite a special treat for me last night.  As you know from their posts here, they are both lovely people and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to dine with them in the company of Dear BK.

Dear Reader Jose, I supped on a caesar salad, an overcooked piece of chicken breast stuffed with asparagus and cheese, with carrots and mashed potatoes on the side, and butter pecan ice cream for dessert.  Dear BK had caesar salad, rigatoni with two enormous meatballs, and butter pecan ice cream for dessert, much of which he did not eat.  Dear Reader Laura had a bowl of soup and Dear Reader Sandra watched us eat.  Dear Reader Laura herself admitted that she and her Dear Daughter are cheap dates.

Well, I have been busy with college preparations this morning, and it's looking more and more like I will end up going to Northern Kentucky University...their musical theatre program seems ideal for me, they put on a wonderful variety of both classic and lesser known musicals, and they also have a summer dinner theatre students can get involved in.  Of course, if I go there it would mean leaving my friends back here but it isn't like Kentucky is that far away from Virginia!

LADJohn--Congrats on the birth of little Jack!  He is absolutely adorable!

TD--Well, that certainly piqued my interest!  If brother Bogart looks and sounds like Matt, please set up away, hehe!

Jay--I'm so glad to hear about Roller's likely recovery and thank you for the good vibes!

DR Emily: I cannot believe you did not ask me what the requirements are to cross the border :(

I could have saved you much time!

You should be happy you were not born in Quebec. Or you would have had to do what I had to do when I wanted to get my passport renewed. I had to have a new birth certificate made (even though my old one was good last time i got a passport).

BTW, DR Emily: get a passport. It will make things much easier for you.

But what you read is correct. If you have your passport AND one piece of photo id (like driver's license or medicare card) you will be fine. Just make sure your birth certificate is valid.

DR Jay, glad to hear that your doggie is doing fine now.

Having been a Plaid (Smudge), I can tell you from a performer's perspective that it's among the greatest experiences I've ever had on stage. The positive energy coming from the audience absolutely electrifies you, and the constant laughter is always so thrilling. That and A CHORUS LINE are probably the two shows that I've done that were worth every ounce of effort it took to put them together. The rewards for the performer are incalculable.

The funny thing is I am bad at resisting food. Except when I am on a strict diet. When I am NOT ALLOWED any of certain things, somehow I resist.

That's a good question, DR Charles. I really hadn't noticed that he wasn't showing up on things any more, but you're right. I haven't seen him in ages. He was a guest detective in several MURDER SHE WROTEs to give Angela Lansbury a vacation, but that had to have been the late 1980s as well. I wonder if he's in bad health?

I am a gentile who likes Hannukah music. I only know two Hannukah songs, but I like them both very much. There, now I really feel like I'm part of the group. :-P

DR MBarnum: I haven't received anything yet. This coming from a man who hasn't received a CD in the mail in several weeks. :-\ I hope your package hasn't mysteriously "disappeared" in transit, as well. I'll keep an eye out for it tonight when I get home. :-)

Jrand: It's not bad, the retrospective, it's just too short and pointless - if someone good had done it it really could have been great.

Let me be the first to mention that we just had a rather interesting earthquake.  We're in a high-rise that's on rollers and I must say it's a rather nauseating experience.  I do hope my home environment is okay.  I don't think it was a bad one, but it seemed like it was because of the rollers.

Wasn't Keith on an episode of Julie Andrews' variety series (or maybe one of her specials the following season)?

I was in a holiday cabaret some years ago, and we sang a song called "Hi Ho for Hannukah." It was arranged as a choral piece for two men and two women, and it was fun to sing. That's about the extent of my knowledge of Hannukah music.

Well we did the "Hannakuh Hoedown" that ended with a Star of David made with crossed hands that was very well received during one production of "The Holiday Survival Game Show."

But of course we were also damned to hell for closing the first act with the Disco Nativity and I dropped Baby Cheesits into the manger using a fishing line....  Boy was that lady mad!!!

Yes DRMATTH - that's a great rendition of that tune!  Not my favorite Connie movie - but she was in there pitching!  Fearless and with confidence to spare!

6.4 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter in the central California coast.  That is NOT a small shaker.  There will be damage, no doubt, near the epicenter.

Yes, rollers!  I'm not exactly sure how it works, but high-rise buildings in earthquake-risk zones are built to withstand the earthquakes.  It's a little like being in a high-rise in Chicago during high winds.

I'm still the sort who would rather be under a doorway or a table during an earthquake.  I probably always will be.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do now that I'm in hurricane country.  (If the hurricane has a boy's name, I guess I could find myself a new boyfriend with the same name and ride out the storm...nah, I'm happy with who I've got.)

This would make for an interesting topic of the day some time, BK: "My Favorite Natural Disaster!"  But it's not a Christmassy topic, so it'll hve to wait.

Good morning... I mean, Good Afternoon!

WOWZA!  Yes, I planned to sleep in today, and boy did I sleep in.. until 12:43 p.m.!  *I've been a little sniffly the past couple of days, and there's been quite the cough going around the orchestra pit at Camelot - rest and sleep are very good things.  -And since I didn't get to bed until 3:30 a.m. anyway...

Well, I got up, and headed downstairs to check in on my niece and nephew.  My niece still starts to cry everytime I get near her, but my nephew is still as lovable as ever.

Breakfast consisted of more of those chocolate chip cookies my brother made last night... some eggs and bacon... some halvah (the marbled type with chocolate - love it!)... and some more cookies.  Welcome to the holidays!  *Can you guess what one of my New Year's Resolutions will be?  ;)

Then I was a "good son", and emptied out the dishwasher, loaded the dirty dishes, made some coffee, cleaned the various pots and pans that were still out, etc...  Oh, and read the Post while sipping my morning/afternoon coffee.

Next topic...

Hurricane Hugo hit here full force in 1989, and let me tell you it was an eye-opening experience. We had people without power for three weeks, and as Charlotte is loaded with lots and lots of tree-lined streets (featuring tremendous old water oaks) most of the streets were impassable due to fallen trees and pwoer lines. Horrendous damage, and I missed 10 days of school because there was no power.

JRand53,  I have a peculiar Keith Michell record called Keith Michell, Songs of My Time and on the flip side, it is Keith Michell in his Henry VIII regalia and it's called, Henry VIII, Songs of his Time.  Haven't played it in years, though I remember Fie Nay Prithee John...which was a round that went "Fie, nay, prithee, John, do not quarrel man, let's be merry and, sing a song!"

We actually have two copies of this album, because back in college I had given the lovely wife, Julieanne (before she was the lovely wife), a copy of it as well, so we now have two in the house. I may have to play this thing.

I, of course, do have a more conventional Michell recordings...Him in Irma La Douce and his complete version (play and all) of Man of La Mancha with Joan Diener.

For those younger readers, Mr. Michell played Henry the Eighth in THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII, one of the great mini-series of our times.

I did not feel the earthquake at all here in Hollywood, BK.  I think you are in the same building as my business manager (who's like up on the 21st floor); no wonder he hasn't returned my phone call yet.

Favorite Christmas Songs:

All time favorite is "The Christmas Song" - almost anyone's version, but I really like Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney and/or Tony Bennett.

Nostalgic favorites are "The Christmas Waltz" and "The Jingle Bell Polka" since they were the first two pieces of vintage Christmas music that I came across.  The polka always made me giddy - and when I finally heard a recorded version playing on the radio, I burst out laughing.

Classic carols:
"The Coventry Carol" (Lully, lullay) - Just so beautiful.
"Angels We Have Heard on High" - Many happy memories of singing the descant as a boy soprano.
"The Boar's Head Carol" -More as a curiosity - I just remember thinking "What is this?" when I heard it on SNL many, many years ago sung by the Whiffenpoofs (I think) - while they flashed funny captions underneath some of the singers' faces.
"Gesu, Bambino" - Always magical to me when "Venite adoremus" starts to be sung over the melody.
"Carol of the Bells" - I had a tape of Christmas songs when I was nine-years olds... and I would play this song over and over again... I wore out the cassette.  -Remember cassettes? ;)

DR George - The version I heard of "The 12 Steps of Christmas" was sung by a male folk singer - sounded like a live recording - lots of audience laughter in the background.  However, I would love to hear Janet Metz perform it!  I have no doubt that she could get the song across.  >:( :o :P :-X

Yes - What a wonderful room/board full of H/Ks!

-Oh, family portrait update... After getting up early yesterday - well early for me - and schlepping to the mall, and getting five poses taken, only one(!) shot came out good enough for public distribution.  My mom didn't bring back the other shots, but I had a feeling there wouldn't be much to choose from - plus, they only took two shots of each of the five poses - ???  And even the one keeper has a strange "tilt" to it.  Due to the angle of our bodies, there's this kind of optical illusion happening - it looks like the right side of the pic is leaning to the right.  Ah, well... At least the sitting was free - they had a coupon, and the very nice attendant gave my mom a free sheet of pics.

I'm being festive in my home. Woke up at around noon after a late night watching the movie "Elf" with my darling friend Alexandra (Emily, please refrain from comments-- Alex is a lovely person!).  Since noon I have done nothing but eat truffles and mini oranges and do some cleaning.

My darling, darling mother, also decided to clean up her closets. While cleaning, she found a half full bottle of sherry and a full bottle of cherry brandy. This woman (whom I adore and admire) waved me towards the kitchen to get some glasses and then proceeded to tell me to pour both of us a "wee" bit more. Then we started on my peach snapps. DR Jon -- Thanks for showing us your beautiful new baby pics...  what DR Kerry told you is absolutely correct!  When they first lock eyes with you and reach up and wrap that incredibly tiny hand around just one of your fingers, it is a done deal.  Your mouth slacks open, your heart drops out of your chest, and you experience a new feeling unlike anything up to that point.

Kerry and I may only be uncles to our first nephew, but we helped raise him as much as the anyone else in the family for the first 3 years.  He is still a sweet, incredible kid at "almost 10."

Have Yourself  A Merry Little Christmas
Under The Christmas Mistletoe  (very obscure)

and an incredibly complex, ornate, orchestral arrangement of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" that Kerry and I have only on an unidentified cassette tape.  The arrangement and drama are even more over the top than some of the stuff that I arrange......and that is going some!!

OKAY BUOYS AND GULLS THIS IS AN ORDER!

When I get back from New York I want you all to get on my case about not having a passport.  Each and every one of you must nag me into doing it.  I have no self-discipline when it comes to large lines and bad photos.  Starting January 2, let the nagging commence.

DRs Jay and Tomovoz--Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. It truly means a lot. I have yet to speak with my friend today, but I should be checking in with him soon.

Jay--I'm so glad to hear Roller is getting better! I'm really sorry I forgot to wish you and him good vibes last night. My mind was somewhere else. Belated good vibes, though!

Jon--Your son is adorable! Congratulations! Feel free to post more pics!

Hope all of the West Coast readers are doing all right after the earthquake!

Oh, a Christmas song I forgot to add last night: Carol of the Bells! Also, "Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)" and the cast of Chicago's song on Carols for a Cure IV.

I know another Hanukkah song...It goes "Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the menorah!" and so on. I also vaguely remember a Kwanzaa song from elementary school. Each year, we'd have a holiday singalong, and we sang Christmas songs along with a few Hanukkah and Kwanzaa songs.

For DR Charles Pogue --

I would be very grateful if you could give me the information about how to order the DVD set that you talked about, produced by the BBC and containing 4 Oscar Wilde plays and a documentary.

I know you are busy Charles, so whenever you could squeeze in the time, it will be very appreciated.

Thanks very much.   8)

Sorry if I said passport and photo id, i meant birth certificate and photo id. As long as your birth certificate is valid.

Yes, I know a lot about crossing borders and getting items across borders. It's my specialty :)

Oh a word of warning.  You know how you keep saying you want to marry an American?  Well I wouldn't mention that to the people at the border :)

As I found it in a store...Tower Records in Glendale...I'm sure you could order directly through them, though it is a BBC video and is distributed through Warner Bros.  It's called the Oscar Wilde Collection.  It is slugged with the internet address of www.bbcamerica.com  ; so perhaps, it can be ordered through them.

DR Michael Shayne, I knew Michell was a native Australian...I think he might have been discovered by Olivier, who cast him as MacDuff in a 1955 production of the Scottish play, in which Olivier played the moody, murdering thane.

BK, Keith Michell was indeed in Irma La Douce, I believe  hewas the first British Cervantes/Quixote in Man of La Mancha (as said earlier, I have a recording of the entire play with him and Joan Diener), and he also was in a musical about the Brownings, ROBERT & ELIZABETH.  From what I've been able to glean about him on the internet, I think he may have moved back to Australia to become an esteemed and venerable institution there.  I'm hoping Tomovoz can maybe update us on his recent doings.

All those posts about the wonderful Mr Michell. Last performance here - only a few years back - was as "Scrooge" in a wonderful production of the musical.
We met him (accidently) after the show. He was indeed a charming man. He is of course starred in "Robert And Elizabeth" and narrates the delighful "Captain Beaky" on two recordings. UK residents would be very familiar with the character "Hissing Sid".

Michell also played the role of Robert Browning in the play "Dear Love" - entirely written from the letters of Browning and Barrett.

Please forgive me for being E & T since Saturday night.  I am still suffering from pneumonia, so yesterday I stayed in bed as long as I could before I had to get ready to go do the matinee of Oliver.  Two of my very dear friends were supposed to come to the show yesterday with her mother and a family friend of her mother’s.  When I made their reservations for four, I neglected to mention that I would prefer that my friends not be seated in the front row, since, as Ann pointed out in her review last week, the front row is about two feet away from the edge of the stage.

Well, knowing that my party of four was in the front row, I did my best not to make any eye contact with the audience, a neat trick during Reviewing the Situation where I have been directed to address several lines to different audience members.  Somehow, I managed it, which, as it turned out, was a good thing. When I took my curtain call I looked out at my friends only to find that the fourth member of the party was not their old family friend, but instead was my best friend from high school and college who flew up from L.A. to surprise me.

As a result of my surprise, the show was followed by dinner out, which was followed by hours of reminiscences, before I finally took him back to his father’s place.  By the time I got home, it was way past my bedtime and AOL kept kicking me out, so I finally gave up trying to post.

At Christmastime, it is always nice to reflect on the "presents" that come to us, even when they do not look like wrapped packages with bows and ribbons.

I have the wonderful gift of hearing Kerry laugh when something tickles him........ and, we have been blessed with a wonderful, loving present that weighs 50 pounds, has 4 legs, and eyes that could melt the heart of a gorgon.

We have the priceless gift of waking up each day with our health, and the ability to enjoy all of the wonders that each day sets forth.

We have been given the gifts of getting to know so many of the terrific contributors to this site, and even the fun of meeting some in person.

And all of the shared daily joy, fun, laughs, touching moments, shared stories, supportive thoughts and prayers, .... none of these would be possible if not for the caring, the hard work, and the loving joy-filled heart of Bruce Kimmel and his willingness to "open the Living Room" to all of us.

I really don't need another shirt, or a box of candy when I have all of the above;  I just know each day how lucky I am.

Keith Michell is also known for his recurring role as Dennis Stanton, the "rogueish" former thief and insurance investigator, on Murder, She Wrote.  It was sort of a mini-series within the main series, separate from the Jessica Fletcher stories, with Hallie Todd as his secretary, Rhoda Markowitz.  They made a total of nine Stanton stories, and he probably could have carried the character on a series of his own.

Somewhere, I've the scripts for Six Wives of Henry VIII, and for the Glenda Jackson follow-up series, Elizabeth R.  They were issued in paperback at the time the shows were broadcast on PBS.  But they're probably in the boxes that haven't arrived yet.   :-\

I should also point out that I like "The Twelve Pains Of Christmas", the ever popular "The Chimmey Song" and who could forget, "I'm Dressin' Up Like Santa (When I Get Out On Parole), "The Restroom Door Said, "Gentlemen" and last but never least, " A Message From The King".  True classics.

My LEAST favorite Christmas songs?  Easy.  I don't know why, but I really don't like "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" (even The Manhattan Transfer's version...although I like the arrangement that they do...the close harmonies and all...just not the song itself) and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

DR: Ladodgerjon. I am not a "goo goo" wonderful baby person at all but those photos are wonderful and indeed the "holding on" is wonderful. I am still so fond of my nephew and niece and they are now in their thirties - the early bonding I guess. The only feeling that comes close was after my Mother had a stroke some years back and then was at last able to hold my hand. This will be my second Christmas without my mother and I feel it more this year.
I probably don't need to write this to the special readers of HHW but there is no substitute for a hug. Europeans find it such a natural way to express love. So many people would be so much happier if they could reach out and hug the people for whom they care.

I'm majorly entranced watching Mr. Jacques Demy's Peau d'Ane, a very strange magical whimsical musical fairy tale that has rarely been seen in this country.  It's a French region 2 DVD that was just released.  I took a chance on it - even though amazon.fr and the site I bought it from both said it was in French with only French subtitles.  But, since I'd already gotten the French special editions of Umbrellas and Young Girls, and because they both had English subs, I took a flyer and it paid off.  English subs indeed.  What a stunningly beautiful film and what a Legrand score and songs.  Most of it is totally unfamiliar to me.

Yes, I mentioned his recurring role on MURDER SHE WROTE in an earlier message. He had an adventure or two with Jessica before he had those stories of his own. He was marvelous in them, though they were not the tightly written mysteries than many of the early Fletcher stories were.

I have both those paperback volumes of HENRY VIII and ELIZABETH R you mentioned, and I've often wondered why somoeone didn't produce those as plays. They're marvelous dramas and I think could be adapted to the stage rather easily in some cases.

I think ELIZABETH R is probably the best mini-series ever produced with I CLAUDIUS, HENRY VIII, and ROOTS also in the running.

Some of my favorite Christmas songs/carols (and the recordings from whence they come):

from "A BROADWAY CHRISTMAS" (produced by BK):
Pine Cones and Holly Berries/It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
by Glory Crampton and the Talisman Quartet from Here's Love and
Lovers On Christmas Eve
from I Love My Wife Liz Larsen and Sal Viviano (originally recorded by James Naughton and Joanna Gleason)

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas from Meet Me In St. Louis sung by Judy (with the original movie lyrics)

just about everything from "CABARET NOËL: A Broadway Cares Christmas" but especially:
One Family by Richard and Dierdre Kiley and Sheldon and Margery Harnick
Surabaya Santa by Kristine Zbornik
The Perfect Christmas Eve by Roslyn Kind
one of my absolute, all-time favorites:  All Those Christmas Clichés as can only be sung by the fabulous Lainie Kazan
and especially Wishing You a Drag Queen Christmas by B. D. Wong

I love the arrangement of Christmas Carol from The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (the nine-hour play with Roger Rees) arranged by Stephen Oliver.  In the published songbook, it's (correctly punctuated) title is called God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen

and finally from "SAVE THE CHILDREN:  Christmas Carols and Festive Songs":
When a Child Is Born by Michael Ball and Claire Moore (I love her voice!)
I love the arrangement of Ding Dong Merrily on High/O Come All Ye Faithful and
I Watch You Sleeping by Frances Ruffelle

I will buy Benjamin Kritzer, etc. eventually.  I am sure it is a delightful read.  Right now I am going to have financial problems in buying books for school.  Unless Benjamin Kritzer gets assigned by a political science prof next term, I will have to put off getting it until I can actually afford to do so.  This upcoming trip is putting me closer to the limit of my bank account than I can possibly manage.

No offence was meant.  My computer has been acting up and chat was screwing with my display - which is its wont after more than 10-15 minutes in the room.

Good evening.

Great show tonight - and we had a wonderful audience.  Period.  And the fact that it was a Monday night made it even more impressive.  *And from the looks of the collection "helmets", we may very well hit the $20,000 mark with our BC/EFA and Food & Friends fundraising drive after tonight's take!  And we still have one more night of "passing the helmet" left!

After tonight's show, we had our Secret Santa party.  And it was Pot Luck!  And, boy, was there a LOT of food.  And good food it was too!  Shrimp, chicken wings, spaghetti and meat sauce(!), hot nacho cheese dip, hot artichoke and cheese dip, pumpkin-chocolate cheesecake, brownie pie, apple pie, etc., etc., etc...  There was so much food there that there were leftovers!  Leftovers after a theatre party?!?!?!

I gave my final Secret Santa gift, and got my final Secret Santa gift - which was a nice bag of assorted chocolates, as well as some really nice hand cream, "Glove Potion".  As did the others who participated.  It took a few tries before I guessed who my Secret Santa was, and I went ahead and revealed myself to my "giftee" - I had the stage manager - and, boy, was it hard trying to find a time when she was NOT in the theatre so I could plant her gifts.  Some people really went all out, and some people were really, really sneaky.  Unfortunately, one person did not get gifted - one of the boys who plays Young Tom.  After some deduction, we figured out who his Secret Santa was/is, and we'll all be bringing him - the young man - a gift tomorrow.  *However, we also realized that his Secret Santa was most likely waiting to give his gift tomorrow, since the giftless-one was not scheduled to go on tonight.  So...  All in all, all will be bettered.

I had a very nice time - and didn't stuff myself too much.  Just one more show tomorrow night, and then it's our "Christmas Break".   :D

Today I received a lovely box of COOKIES from dear reader Jose.  I have already eaten two of said cookies and they are thoroughly delicious.  I shall be serving them at my Christmas Eve Do and I shall be bringing a few to a select group of my coworkers tomorrow.

Anyone for two hundred posts?

It has been December 23 for 18 hours here and won't be by the time I get home form visiting friends this evening. The significance of that amazing information is I would like to wish the birthday boys Mr Orr and Mr Brockman (Jnr) the very happiest of birthdays form the far side of the world. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you both.

What timing, DR MusicGuy...

On the drive in tonight, I started thinking about just how good a year it's been for me.  Work has been good.  Social life has been good.  I got to meet new people, make some new friends.  I got closer to some old friends. I went to some new places.  I did some things I never dreamed I'd be able to do.  And I did some things that I never even dreamed of doing.  My finances are actually in "my favor" for more than just a week at a time - if you know what I mean (I'm not even sure I know what I mean by that turn of phrase).  I've been able to spend more time with my nieces and nephew.  Heck, I got to be a Scarlette, and do a vocal arrangement for the Jeepers Creepers CD.  All my recent gigs and projects have been things I've more or less chosen to do, or at least wanted to work on... And it's been nice having this "living room" to come home to throughout the day... and to be welcomed back to after being away for a while.

In short, I am happy right now.  I actually got a little misty-eyed just thinking about it.  -And it was a beautiful night here in the DC area - not too cold, and the air was very nice and clear.

Life is not perfect.  There are still some little wrinkles that need to be ironed out.  But that's what makes it so interesting.  And that's what makes the good so much better.

Life is good.  I'm happy.

 :)

Ooohh... I was about to ask if the cookies made it to you today!  Yeah!  *For a real nice treat, just give them a few seconds in the microwave..."nummy" as I like to say. ;)

Best mini series: "Jewel In The Crown" and "The Singing Detective". Colin would probably cast votes for "Brideshead Revisited" and "To Serve Them All My Days".  "A Dance To the Music Of Time" was also excellent as were "Frozen Lazerus", and the more recently aired "Cambridge Spies". "A Perfect Spy" is also right up there too. Just realised they are all from the UK!

Not only will this help bring today's Count up to 200, but it will also aid in my own attainment of Sr. Member Status... and that not-so-elusive HHW God.

BK - Did the cookies make it one piece?  Or at least in the 36 pieces they were sent?
