Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pithy and yet piquant, and now it is time for you to post until the incommunicado cows come home.

Good morning, all! I have a full day planned: a bit of Christmas arrangng, a bit of personal shopping, a movie with our DR Ginny, and then dinner with my friends, Alan, Liliane, and their daughter Julie.  I would guess that their older daughter is back to Ohio State University.

In the past two weeks over 40 new members have signed up for this site, and only DR singingnymph is remotely posting.  I woud suggest, Dear Friend BK, that rather than attacking the acolytes as wussburgers, these peculiar- perhaps lurking, perhaps stalking - new members be attacked in PMs for their covert activities.

Perhaps each of us DRs should contact 3-5 newbies, cordially welcome them to the party that is HHW, and encourage them to contribute.

And the word of the day is: INTERLARD!

Gee...I've only been here a short time and I've already seen this word!

I think I posited at the time that it is when you add Crisco® to your pancake batter.

My DH thinks it is the intermediary step in rendering pig fat: beyond bacon and soon to be suet. (He's so alliterative!)

I looked it up:

interlard \in-tuhr-LARD\, transitive verb:
To insert between; to mix or mingle; especially, to introduce something foreign or irrelevant into; as, "to interlard a conversation with oaths or allusions."

I guess Crisco in pancake batter could work as an example!

Speaking of lard, one of my favorite experiences of my teen years involved lard, so i repeat it in honor of the lard part of the word of the day:

I worked at a cotton candy stand in Coney Island, just two blocks from my home, and couldn't quite get the handle on making the cotton candy look pretty, so they put me on the Belgian waffle station, making waffles from scratch.  We made up all kinds of stories to tell customers about the origin of the Belgian waffle as we made a fresh, almost from scratch waffle for the customer.  The one thing that we had to hide was that we were making them with lard, so we were taught how to artfully keep the lard under the counter, wipe a brush along the lard, and then brush the waffle iron with the lard before pouring the batter into the waffle iron.  If anyone asked, we had to say it was made with lard rather than butter, but maybe three people actually asked what that fatty substance was.

"Those darn people at CocaCola have been at it again!" shrieked Joan.  "Somehow, they've managed to INTERLARD our entire DARN LITER bottle shipment with their darn swooshy-wave logo!  Darn them all to heck!!!"

(I know, I know, the real Joan would never have said "darn," but the word for the day isn't INTERLAMD.)

My Hungarian born grandfather, who was a wonderful cook, used to render pork lard for cooking.  All of his meals were absolutely delicious. He was also a true believer in heavy cream, sour cream and  butter in all his cooking.  He always had a large garden including one each of a pear, cherry and peach tree.  he would can his own vegetable and fruits. He lived to be 86, but it wasn't long enough in my opinion.. I still miss him.

bk, I hope you can thoroughly enjoy your mostly day off. You always stay so busy with so many projects in various states of preparation that I hope you can just turn everything off that's remotely business-related and relax.

When I was working two jobs and also doing theater a lot more regularly than I do now, I used to call these "brain recuperation days."

Enjoy yours!

Delighted to read that the new CAROUSEL looks so good. I'm looking forward to receiving it, hopefully, this week along with the new issues of THE KING & I and FLOWER DRUM SONG.

I passed on SOUTH PACIFIC for the moment. I love the score, but it's my least favorite of the R&H movies, and I doubt I've watched the non-anamorphic DVD I already have more than twice.

Three generations of my family (ok 6 people, but they are from 3 generations) went to STRIKING 12 at the Fairmont Opera House last night.  It will be at the Daryl Roth Theatre in Union Square starting on Tuesday. There were raves from all - even the ones who didn't want to go. So much so that they called me immediately after the show to tell me what I missed, something they rarely do.  So I am passing on their recommendation to see it to anyone interested. Here's the website again http://www.striking12.com/

MR BK  didn't you say you had A DISTANT TRUMPET to watch?

elmore: I've explained this recent rash of signups - it's because when I post the notes they are "pinged" to other sites - I don't know what that means (Bakalor explained it to me once and it went in one ear, did an about face, and exited - but it's built in the software to ping) and then those pingees come and register but don't even have a clew as to what they're registering for - many are from foreign countries - none come back.  The only "real" registered users of late are edisaurus and singingnymph, both of whom have joined our merry troupe.  When are you back in NY?  We open in less than four weeks, baby, and I believe you've got about seventeen numbers to orchestrate :-)  I also have the incindental music to send you, along with the way we did the military stuff at the end.

Thank you for the lovely comment Bruce! I am having a ton of fun working with you, and still learning new things

The party I "dragged" Bruce to the other night was for the Hispanic Holiday Dia de los muertos, or translated, Day of the Dead. It is to celebrate the lives and souls of those we love who have passed away, and they come back for the night to dance and revel and drink and be merry.

Nominated for Best Movie Theater for its indie appeal, this is the best place for local cinephiles to get their art-house fix. Cannes and Sundance favorites overshadow the occasional big-budget blockbuster. Tara was the first local theater to show "The Blair Witch Project." Old-fashioned, bare-bones equipment does just fine here--John Sayles' latest sually doesn't require DTS, THX or Dolby Digital.

Just proofed act one of the Alice and Emily CD - it sounds really good - I just have a few little nitpicky fixes.  I made some paper edits in dialogue and was able to find another minute we could take out of that act, but that means I'd have to get a little over four minutes out of act two and rather than go nuts trying to do that, I think I'll just make it two CDs and charge our usual special low two CD price of 22.98.  However, I think I'll do a "holiday" special - if ordered prior to 12/31, 19.98.

I'm thinking about bringing some of my own merry troupe from Fresburg (Fresno) & surrounding areas for the matinee on the 9th, which is why I wanted to make sure of the price.  Also, is it LACC students only, or will any current student ID do?

In the meantime, I'm deciding which lucky friend or relative in SoCal gets to put me up that weekend.
Is it best friend Jayse in Lake Balboa?
Aunt Laurie in Manhattan Beach?
Or Cousin Lloyd in Thousand Oaks?
This could get exciting.

FOR GEORGE:
Cannibal Blood Drink (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_28968,00.html)
Quote
1 gallon cranberry juice
1 gallon orange juice
1 cup raspberry sorbet
1 quart seltzer
Body Part Ice Cubes, recipe follows

Mix the juices together. Add the sorbet, softened, and stir until it disappears. Add the seltzer.

Before serving, chill with the Body Part Cubes of floating face and hands.

Pour into glasses and stir with glow stick swizzle sticks.

Body Part Ice Cubes:
12 cups cold water
2 to 3 drops green food coloring

Special Equipment:
1 roll packing tape
1 roll plastic wrap
2 plastic gloves
1 plastic Halloween face mask

Color the cold water with enough green food coloring to make it stand out against the background of the punch.
Use packing tape to seal of the eyes, nose and mouth openings of the mask. Line the inside of mask with plastic wrap to prevent leaking. Place it in a bowl that will hold the mask as still as possible while freezing. Fill with the colored water up to the line of the mask, making sure not to spill over if possible. Place bowl in freezer to solidify, at least 24 hours.

Fill 2 food service gloves with colored water and twist and knot opening closed to make a tight seal. Freeze gloves for 12 to 24 hours.

When frozen, cut plastic gloves off. Take ice out of mask, putting hot water on the outside of the mask, if necessary, to help it come out easily.

Carefully float the face and hands in the punch.

Bruce - Your decision about the 2-CD set sounds absolutely right, from my perspective as a consumer who's bought live-event Cd's and been disappointed when  they were edited too much.  (The recent Barbara Cook at the Met is an example; moments I loved in the live presentation are missing.)

I'd bet people will want to know that they're getting the full, complete concert that was done at Town Hall, and especially given that you're giving a window of opportunity to buy the 2-CD set for just a little more than the single-CD price, it sounds like the best way to go in terms of giving the customers what they would want from a concert recording.

I'm feeling out of sorts and very kvetchy, so I'm not going to the Angela Lansbury reads Dorothy Parker event tonight, but Skip is going with a friend who will use my ticket.  I would go if I weren't feeling under the weeather, but in all honesty, I had been excited about this event when the buzz was that it was going to be possibly the last time we might get to see Ms. Lansbury onstage on Broadway.  But now that she's doing a full run of a play next spring, the excitement of this Dorothy Parker event has dwindled a bit.

Sometimes typos are deliberate.
Sometimes typos are intended to be funny.
But sometimes, not often, the clearly inadvertent typo is hysterical:

I recieved an interesting comment from one of my co-workers this evening, shortly before my shift was over.  She noted how I was getting six days of work this week, while some of our co-workers are getting maybe four days.  She was pleased for me, but I hadn't realized how much time I was logging in.  Makes me wonder what I'm doing right.

Or maybe I've become Mister Available.   :-\

Speaking of logging in long days, Tuesday is going to be a long one for me.  At poll watcher training today I ended up getting a second shift - now I have to be at one polling place from 6:30 am to noon and then my other shift at a potential trouble precinct from 5:00 PM until the polls close at 9:00 PM. In between I have to remember to vote. It's going to be a beautiful day, so I'm planning to do some things around the house - we'll see. Then there is the post election get together starting at 9:00PM.    I must admit I'm looking forward to it.

This afternoon I saw Running With Scissors.  Loved all of the performances, Annette Benning is a standout just like the reviews have been saying, but Joseph Fiennes and Evan Rachel Wood are also most excelllent.  I am a huge Augusten Burroughs fan and have read all of his books.  I last read RWS a few years back so I had forgotten just enough of the details that I wasn't constantly comparing it to the book.  My friend who had just read the book found the movie boring but liked the performances.  She just felt she could have done without seeing the movie.

elmore: I've explained this recent rash of signups - it's because when I post the notes they are "pinged" to other sites - I don't know what that means (Bakalor explained it to me once and it went in one ear, did an about face, and exited - but it's built in the software to ping) and then those pingees come and register but don't even have a clew as to what they're registering for - many are from foreign countries - none come back.

Well, I clearly missed this discussion before, and I'm sorry you had to go through it again.  DR MBarnum also emailed me to explain it all.  I was really hoping it was the cast of The Brain jumping in.

Times review for SISTER ACT.  The critic starts off with "has Broadway blockbuster written all over it," then picks at it and picks at it, as if he's hedging and can later say he was right whether the show turns out to be a major hit or not.  But I'll bet that pull-quote ends up being a money quote for the show's runs in Pasadena and Atlanta.

Probably.

Let's just say that Sister Act deserves to be picked apart - and it does not deserve to have that pull quote just yet.  But, I knew the LA critics would do just what they're doing - they're the worst batch of critics in the nation and invariably fall all over themselves for work that doesn't deserve it.

I want to know if I have ever had occasion to meet singingnymph.  That is what I want to know.  We're going to put up another couple of Brain songs in the next couple of weeks.  How many here have become "friends" of The Brain?  And what are your friend names?

Nope, not unless you ever came to hear Jeff Harlan sing/play at Perks, in Northridge.
And I've friended The Brain on myspace. I'm Meg.

BRAIN'S SONG - wasn't that a movie of the week many years ago?

Interesting.  Meg is a singingnymph, Bruce was just a singer at NYMF.  Coincidence?  Perhaps, but pehaps not.

Correction...not unless you ever came to hear Jeff on a night I was there. But He probably would've introduced us, cos he's nice like that.
He introduced me to Tom Wilson, who's an absolute riot.

Brain's song.  Something to do with a bare chicago man playing the piccolo.  As I've not seen the movie - that may be a tastless comment!

Hello everybody. I don't really have anything to say, except that everybody's boys and girls (of the feline variety) are all quite beautiful and/or handsome. I would post pictures of my own, but my girl is already my avatar and I don't have a picture of my boy. And I can't take one because the camera appears to be in California at the moment.

Good night.

The LA critics are an odd bunch...

I don't think there will be a DVD, but then again, you never know.  At this point, I'm trying to figure out some way that there can be a cast album.
