Post by: bk on November 07, 2006, 12:12:57 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like sands through an hourglass, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're watching Days Of Our Lives, waiting for Matthew Ashford to come back to the show.

Good morning, all!  This afternoon I fly back to New York, so I would appreciate all the vibes for safe travel and getting to the polls before closing that you can send me!

Today would have been my mom and dad's 62nd wedding anniversary if she hadn't died 12 years ago.  My sister-in-law and chef par excellence Jo Ann just left to vote, and I am sitting here listening to my laundry dry.

Tomorrow morning, I jump headfirst into "The Brain" and I've been listening to our BK's performance of the score over and over.  I have all my basic work laid out, so it's a mainly filling in the blanks, which is the fun stuff.  There are always those moments when I look at a piece of manuscript paper amnd think "what the hell do I do?"  That's when I put on a CD and take a short nap to clear my head.

TOD:
Thrift store, Pittsburgh, 1972, finding a sealed set of the 2-LP OBC for SHE LOVES ME
Ebay: two original 1903-1904 programs for BABES IN TOYLAND at New York's Columbus Circle Majestic Theatre; the paper used was so cheap that all copies in the NYPL Theatre Collection are reduced to scraps.

And the word of the day is: PERTINACIOUS!
Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
Whose feet are squishing all over the floor today...
Seems that, in order to get rid of the lard from a few days ago, she squirted some of that shampoo PERT IN HER SHOES.

Today's a big day, kids.  The fate of the worlsd may hinge on it.  Vote wisely!

I loved thrift stores when I was in high school, and you ould find some great things then.  My favorites were a Hawaiian shirt that I wore until it was in rags (which I still own) and a red sweater from the 40's that penants, footblls and names of all the Ivy League colleges on it.  Very cute.  I looked something Andy Hardy would have worn.

As a friend of mine then loved to say, "Like shit through a goose, so are the days of our lives."  Children-- NEVER say that word!  :-X

Let's try this again.

Casey would waltz
With a strawberry blonde
While the band PERTINACIOUSLY played "The Star Spangled Banner," not normally considered a waltz tune.

PRECAUTION IS advised when PERTINACIOUS extremists are around.  If they think for even a moment that you don't agree with them, they will REACT IN PIOUS indignation, and if you suggest that their OUTCRIES PAIN you in any way, they will only ACT UP NOISIER and noisier.

Rehoboth Beach does not have thrift shops, other than one owned by the Salvation Army.  My impression is that the locals would rather hand their hand-me-downs to their relatives.  This makes things very difficult for the local drag queens when they want new outfits.

Instead, we have outlet malls (http://www.tangeroutlet.com/centers/index.html?center=REH).

As for on-line shopping, I let der Brucer take care of all of that.  I do the groceries shopping.

I've a hunch this makes der Brucer and me a couple of freaks.

I've found a few good records and CDs at thrift shops but I've never shopped on E-Bay. In fact, I've never been to E-Bay except in passing to look at something a poster might have mentioned as interesting. As Woody just said:

SPOILERS

*

I also enjoyed last night's show, especially the part about the new "heroes".  My favorite new one is the kid. I guess that is not totally surprising (considering his parents), but still interesting.

The only part i didn't really understand is what happened with with guy from ALIAS (is it matt?).  The FBI gal goes with him looking for the serial killer. And they end up finding the guy at the hospital. So is this guy one of the heroes?  Is he a serial killer?

TOD:  Thrift-store wise, I found a complete, still shrink-wrapped set of the original release of Time-Life's 2LP The Swing Era, in the big slipcases with the hardcover books, each for $1.00!  That was a great find, and was years before they released them on CD.  One of the best-ever Time-Life series, IMHO.

What is this "eBay" of which you speak?   ;D  Not only have I found tons of great stuff there, I've made several friends, as well as a few "eBay nemeses" (to quote one of the last funny lines from the miserable final seasons of "Frasier").  One guy I met through eBay had an incredible collection of composer demos for flop shows, all of which he copied to CD gratis for me.  Another lady I won an auction from ended up having some extremely rare Frances Farmer items that she sold to me privately after having gotten to know of my research.  I managed to find a signed first edition of my favorite childhood book, Stoo Hample's The Silly Book.  The list goes on an on.

Show last night was mayhem and chaos, but we made it through. For a one-night only engagement, where we only saw the space we were performing on an hour or two before the actual show, it went pretty well. There was lots of improvisation as lines were lost, regained, etc, but the cast held it together for the most part. Whew!

I'm on much later than usual because I went out this morning to vote. There were only four people ahead of me, so a short wait. The room where the voting machines were had the heat cranked up WAY too high. I had on a sweater and a leather jacket, and I was very uncomfortable. Thankfully, the wait was short, and it didn't take that long to actually vote.

[Sigh] Even with election returns taking away the 10 p.m. hour on the national networks, I still have three/four shows on at 9-10, and nip/tuck at 10 on FX which I assume is still going to show it. How funny that I'm not interested in anything at 8 p.m. Of course, that will change when AMERICAN IDOL returns in January.

Yesterday afternoon, I got a call from our stage manager saying that rehearsal was cancelled.  With all the rain, too many people would have been missing. :o So, I went home and watched "Heroes" and the rebroadcast of last Friday's "Battlestar Galactica" and worked on my lines.  I pretty much have them all except my last as the judge (procrastinator, that I am ::)).  I'll be able to get it down before rehearsal tonight and then have all (ten of) my lines memorized! ;)

I got the Amazon shipping notice yesterday (as in days of olde), so I hope it comes tomorrow. If not, Thursday or Friday depending on the mailman's mood, I guess.

I did not order SOUTH PACIFIC. I know it's the roadshow version which I don't have, but I'm not sure 15 more minutes added to the film will help it much for me. Still, I expect it will stay in print, and if I change my mind, I'll get it later.

Today should be the last day for those pertinacious calls from politicians...or should it be calls from pertinacious politicians?

Both of the above.

Unless you are flagged as a "friend" (contributor/volunteer) you are most likely safe until about 15 Jan when Campaign 2008 will start in earnest - (the IOWA Caucus will be a brief 12 months away). Regardless of today's results, there will be two campaigns kicked off: "Undo The Damage" and "Consolidate The Gains".

MO residents can anticipate a very contentious campaign to overturn the election results (regardless of the outcome). Just like in Florida 2000, the declared victor's winning margin will most likely be less than the inherent error rate in the voting process - and both parties have lawyers already on site and ready to go!

We no longer have Elcection Day - we have Election Seasons!
Happy Holidays.

I had meantto mention earlier in my Ohio week that I see your Astaire-Rogers set finally arrived.  I'm happy it showed up.  I couldn't figure out the amazon.com(?) delay.

I've been having a bear of a time with amazon.co.uk today and yesterday.  I'd ordered a Region 2 DVD of Olivier's film of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA and amazon.co.uk reported it wouldn't be available until Jan., so I cancelled and tried to order through an amazon vendor.  amazon.co.uk refuses to allow me to do that, saying I can't send two items to the same address!  Oy.

One possibility:  You ordered more than just the one title.  And...one of the other titles won't be available until later, so they are shipping them all together, rather than as they become available.

Despite my best efforts to break them of this habit, my multiple DVD orders always default to the ship-as-a-group mode rather than the as-they-become-available mode.  You have to manually change that on the order page.

EBAY is where I met DR JMK who brought me to HHW, so blame HIM for that!

Found the sheet music for "Zing a Little Zong" and many Allison Hayes items....in particular a slip of paper with her address and phone number which made it possible to find the house she lived in when she was under contract to Universal-International and Columbia....which made it possible for DR JOSE to get lost and for former DR JAY to photograph said house.

Twas an interesting morning at the  polls. We have optical scan ballots, so you really do still fill out a paper ballot.  People were joking that they were being shredded instead of scanned etc. They did start this new computer system to check voter eligibility. It took about 20 minutes to start missing people who are listed in the book and then they ran out of paper for the printer and had to start using the old hand method for most of the morning.  The line was between 25-50 people all morning and never let up.

I was in a primarily republican precinct this morning. I'm curious to compare it to the primarily democratic precinct I'll be in tonight.

Der Brucer - there are of course ways of categorizing things, such as the use of the word "contentious."  I think we've had far more contentious discussions in the past right here on HHW, which did not result in anyone leaving.   Francois opted to remove his posts from the board, and I respect that decision, so I removed my responses which made no sense without his posts - but I wish he'd come back as well.

And the day is early!

Glitches, Malfunctions, Accusations Mar Early Hours of Election Day 2006 (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,227823,00.html)
Quote
Senior Justice Department officials confirmed to FOX News that some reports have come in about what might be perceived as attempted voter intimidation or suppression in Virginia.

In New Jersey, Republican Tom Kean Jr.'s campaign office was reportedly vandalized. A chain and padlock was placed on the front door and keys were broken off in the locks at the side entrances.

Pennsylvania voters encountered machine malfunctions.

Problems also were reported in many states, including Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Wisconsin.

In Louisville, Ky., one poll worker was arrested on charges of assault and interfering with an election after he allegedly choked a voter and tossed the voter out the door. Election officials called police, and the voter wanted to file charges, said Paula McCraney, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Clerk.
"That about tops off the day," McCraney said.

I think all who are fed up with the negative campaign ads on TV should write their Senators and Congresspersons and request they consider passing a law forbidding political campaign ads on radio and TV from being anything other than about the candidates asking for our votes.

There can, of course, be editorial shows/news shows that break down the various strengths/weaknesses...but they should be advertised for what they are and should be given over to equal response time criteria.

I'd also appreciate a ban on telephone calls with recorded messages for political campaigns.

SICK OF IT, TOO!

Most of the ads to which you object are not sponsored by the politicians running for office, they are "independent expenditures" by various political action committees. The McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill attempted to put strings on this sort of stuff, but the courts said no - Freedom of Speech. The interesting catcher is that a true political ad - i.e. "Vote for John Smith" can be controlled, but an "issue ad" -i.e. "Robert Doe  is stinky pinko homo and should not be a Senator" is permitted (it does not ask for a vote for a candidate ).

All attempts to regulate telephonic political solicitations have also run afoul of the courts.

Your best defense is to use a machine to screen all your calls - I do (and it drives my family nuts - an unanticipated added advantage). My journey to the next life will be delayed because when God calls, he'll have to leave a message!.

The really bad news is that history suggests that the most negative ads work their trick - ask Kerry about the Swift Boat Ads!

DR Rodzinski, you're right. The Tara was formerly owned by George Lefont. He still owns the Plaza, but my favorite theatres that he had are long gone. It's a shame, since they would both be so close to our new house.

The Silver Screen, a reperatory cinema, bit the dust when home video and movies of VHS made them obsolete. The Screening Room was a first run art film house managed by a dear friend.

When I was editing "Daughters of the Dust", I was right across the street from the Screening Room. Whenever LeFont wanted to screen a film, my friend would call me and I'd run over to sit in the booth with him and watch the film, because if George didn't choose to book it, it would very likely not see the light of a xenon bulb here in Atlanta. I saw a lot of great films that never made it here for one reason or another.

Damn the multiplexes!

Well, look at you know

And daddy said go wash your face, you look like a horse

By then, der Brucer was waiting for me so that we could go vote.

The polling site was just across the highway, but anyone trying to hoof it across the highway around here is subtracting a few years from their life expectancy.  (Another note of local contention, of course.)

Then we went up to the local WalMart, where they didn't have any of the new R&H DVDs on sale.  Which sort of figured.

I am going to try the Meijer Store tomorrow before venturing out to Wal Mart....of course BlockBuster also sells new DVD's - but they are a bit pricey.  :P

I'm fairly sure poor joey will be gone. but what was up with the judges giving each dancer a perfect score???  I really enjoyed mario's first dance the most.  BUt imo joey and emmitt did not deserve to get 30. I actually preferred joey's first dance. And while emmitt's first dance was nice, it did not appeal to me (they gave him 29/30).

To me it's about the choreography. And the celebrity has to do some interesting dancing (not just the professional).  In mario's second dance the pro did so much fancy stuff (but not so much for mario).

I'm still definitely rooting for mario. I'll be curious to see how close he and emmitt are in the votes.

Sad news here in the Pacific Northwest.  I just leaned that Yanni has put his Tacoma mansion up for sale.  He bought it several years ago, supposedly because of his deep love for Linda Evans, who owns an estate just south of Tacoma in Lakewood.  Actually, I believe he bought it so that he could be within a few miles of my home..........  Oh Well!

Jennifer, at the risk of bringing down the wrath of others at this site; I would say that, personally, I don't think your Dancing with the Stars comments needed to to be posted as a SPOILER tonight.  After all, those of us that watch the show already know that we are down to the three gentlemen you mentioned; and basically you were expressing your feelings on how they performed, not on anything shocking that happened.  Maybe mentioning the two perfect scores could be considered a spoiler, but I doubt that any of us would be surprised to see a perfect score on this program.  Now, if you were talking about the reults show tomorrow, and you said something like, "I can't believe that they sent Mario home tonight."  Now THAT would be a spoiler!

Oh well, I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to spoilers, so keep up the good work.

Some of the cuts are musical numbers so it is nice to have them back. The Boars Tooth sequence is now double the length. I think it contributes nothing.

Then, I watched a couple of CSI: NY episodes from the boxed set. One involved the subway surfers which I remembered from having seen the show when broadcast, but I still didn't remember the identity of the murderer, so that was a nice surprise.

The other involved the shooting and killing by bow and arrow. Again, I did remember certain aspects of the plot but not the identity of the killer. The other case in the episode involved a dead man in a gutter with a bucketful of paste poured over his face. I did remember the identity of the killer in this one.

...it certainly made the film just that much more entertaining!

But seriously folks, it was a very good movie and beautifully filmed. I am looking forward to watching the other 2 movies in the set. East Germany made some fine westerns. Who knew.

As I earlier predicted:

we won't know the real outome of this election for days!

MO and MT are going Democrat, so VA will determine which party controls the Senate - and VA is headed for an automatic recount.

Although the House moved from Republican to Democrat, many of the Republican losses were moderates and many of the Democrat gains went to "blue dogs" - therefore, the overall house may actually move to the right.
