Title: VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE
Post by: bk on November 08, 2006, 12:15:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both variety and spice, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're reading variety and having some spice (cayenne).

Lot's wife did not vivify with her gaze.

Good morning, all!  I am awake early, eager to pick up my mail at the Post Office and thinking about cleaning off my desk to begin more Brain surgery.  I have a trek to Toyland around 10 AM to check out anything that might have happened in the past week, and then I shall return home to The Brain.

My return to New York was quite strange: we boarded the plane at 5:10 PM EST, and after we were ready to depart, the pilot told us there was a 40 minute delay at Laguardia.  I figured, I'll never get to the polls now!  Five minutes later we left and landed on time.  I was voting by 7:45.  I think it's all those wonderful HHW vibes from so many excellent folk that did it.  I thank you again.

Of course, I learned later the polls close at 9, not 8 as I thought, so I still would have voted before they closed, but I'm happy it all worked out as it did.

Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance would occasionally have a falling out.  On those occasions, Lucy would stomp to her dressing room, cursing loudly the words "Vivi?  Fie!!!"

Thanks for the SOUTH PACIFIC report DR MS....the extras look very interesting.

So exciting to hear MR BK's thoughts on the new Special Edition DRUM.

Woohoooo....yes it has also ALWAYS been one of my favorite R/H scores for the songs mentioned in today's notes.  Never saw it onstage, but the movie is so very entertaining.  Word is that Ms Kwan and Mr Adiarte are included in the EXTRAS so I am very excited to see them.

My question for ASK BK DAY:

A lot of your TV work was done one-camera movie style, but you also did some shows that were three camera.

Were the three-camera shows shot in sequence?  Did you film the show twice or were pick ups done afterwards....or were the pickups done at the time the scene was shot?

Wednesday morning greetings!  Today I'm working a split shift - 8am-noon, then 5-9pm.  Our "Meet the Grantmaker" panel is tonight.  It's the sparkling finale to our year of 2nd Wednesday nonprofit networking events.  I always look forward to it  - and to it being over.

Here's my favorite voting story from yesterday:  the manager of my department moved into a new home earlier this year.  Knowing that his driver's license did not show his current address, he took along a piece of mail he'd received at his new house.  He was told that that particular item was not a valid verification of his address.  Who was it from?

Good morning!

When I woke up around 8:30, the skies were blue, and it looked as iof we were going to have a quick recovery from the dismal weather-day we had yesterday. Since then, however, the gray skies have NOT cleared up (A BYE BYE BIRDIE reference), and it may rain again. It is a bit warmer today than yesterday, however, so I should be able to wear a long sleeved shirt without a jacket at lunch today.

No need for me to jump on bk's FLOWER DRUM SONG bandwagon. I have had one of my own for years. Always loved the movie overall and the score has been one of my favorites for decades. CAROUSEL is probably my favorite but FLOWER DRUM SONG would come next.

The only thing in the movie I could do without is the "Sunday" comic ballet. It goes on too long and isn't very entertaining. The song is great, but it just goes on too long. The dream ballet for "Love, Look Away" which most everyone condemns is one of my favorite moments in the film. It's so surreal; it's unlike anything else in the musical cinema that I can relate it to.

So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that FLOWER DRUM SONG (along with my other DVDs in the same order) comes in the mail today.

In the event that FLOWER DRUM SONG doesn't arrive on my doorstep today, I have as compensation last night's episodes of HOUSE, VERONICA MARS, and HELP ME HELP YOU.

The boxed set for MEDIUM's second season and CSI: MIAMI's fourth season have also arrived so there is no shortage of things to watch.

BK, I loved your discussion of DRUM...the movie has been one of my favorites since I was a wee bit of a lad of about 8.

Along with the cast members that you mentioned I also think Reiko Sato, as Helen, does a fine job. She died very young and I have been unable to find out the circumstances.

Chop Suey and Grant Ave are my two favorite numbers.

A question for Ask BK Day:

Do you feel vindicated about the 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack on the FLOWER DRUM SONG DVD after all those months of "experts" telling you it was only going to be a Dolby 2.0 stereo track?

Ah, well, if that's the case, it'll be a quick delete on my DVR. I guess they'll show the episode preempted last night in a week or two.

Yes, the three camera shows were always done in sequence, like a play, with an audience.  If memory serves, we did a run-through with an audience that was filmed, and then the real deal with another audience - but I may be remembering wrong.  Certainly there were a few pickups at the end, and if something majorly went wrong they cut and started the scene over again.

As you know, I knew whereof I spoke, but the "experts" are always worrywarts and know more.  It's hard to feel vindicated though, because the experts, once proven wrong, either disappear and are never heard from again, or they just ignore the fact that they were completely wrong.  Of course, someone could point it out to them, but it never does any good.

It depends on how much you care about image quality.  The new DVD is spectacular-looking and derived from the original 55mm negative, which all earlier transfers were not.  The extras are nice, too, but I don't really care about them.  But the image and sound are major improvements.

HHW influence hits the  LA TIMES (http://www.calendarlive.com/stage/cl-et-sisteractnov06,0,2007434.story?coll=cl-lat-homepage)

Quote
A soul to save
"Sister Act" could well be a hit, but let's pray for more personality.
By Charles McNulty
Times Staff Writer

November 6, 2006

Hold off on the novenas for "Sister Act: The Musical." The show, which opened Friday at the Pasadena Playhouse, has Broadway blockbuster written all over it. But it's going to need a little divine intervention if it's to become more than just another generically manufactured hit.
 ...
The problem in a nutshell is this: "Sister Act: The Musical" can't figure out if it wants to be slightly louche like "Hairspray" or crowd-pleasing like "Beauty and the Beast." Original instincts keep getting diverted down clichéd pathways: Remedial plot points interrupt the high jinks as though we were a bunch of simpletons, and an energetic R&B score increasingly gives way to schmaltzy tunes that could elicit groans from even the most pickled piano bar regulars.

I mean, really...using louche in a sentence!

Even though the relatively critical tone of the review belies bk's pessimism, he will surely be vindicated when the review gets quoted as:

"Sister Act: The Musical." ... has Broadway blockbuster written all over it.

It'll be a while. VA will be getting a recount, and the law says a recount can't start until after election certification , which is late (28/29) November! This leaves three or more weeks for the GOP legal-minions to mount challenges in other states.

The way the sets are built for three cameras, it's constant side-to-side movement for the cameras, with walls swinging to open the new set.  It's very clever, actually.

Well, in all fairness, it is not. But the exteriors shot there are used regularly and should please their C of C no end!

I always look up DR RLP.

The Indianapolis C of C is worried about nothing except the Colts and the Pacers...NOTHING.   8)  It is certainly uninterested in ANYTHING Arts related....fer sure.

Reading MOUSE TRACKS mentioned here last week...and noticing DR FRANCOIS's name in the acknowledgements as mentioned last week as well.  8)

HOUSE had an outstanding episode last night as well featuring a 650 pound man waking up from a coma but not suffering from any of the usual ailments associated with obesity. Fascinating case and a surprising revelation.

Also, the ongoing story arc with House against the cop played by the always wonderful David Morse is adding a terrific extra level of interest to the episodes now.

On the INHD channel, they were showing a program called "Olympic Memories Cortino 1956," so I watched until the figure skating came up. I was hoping they'd have Tenley Albright's entire gold medal winning free skate and/or Carol Heiss' silver medal-winning free skate.

Instead, they showed mere seconds of each much to my disappointment. Did look nice in high definition and color (have only seen grainy black and white excerpts from their programs before), but I sure would like to have seen the entire programs. Drat!

I finished my afternoon viewing with my favorite CSI: NY episode from season 2. The two cases were both very unique. One was called "Watergun Wars," folks on game "missions" to shoot their opponents with waterguns until only one is left standing. Of course, one person ends up dead and not from water.

The other story involved an Exotic Edibles convention with fried tarantulas and eating live octopus. Gross but very intriguing.

Back for but a moment.  Picked up the CDs, overnighted Em's to her, and then rushed to a meeting with the kid show producer - Alice dropped by and I gave her her set of CDs.  I'm trying to get everything the designer needs for the booklet by the end of this evening.  The Town Hall guy, who reeks with attitude, thinks he has some sort of control over what we do and don't put in the booklet - it is to laugh.  At the show, he asked if he could have a look at it before we put it to bed and I, as a courtesy, said fine.  We asked him for the Town Hall logo today, and he apparently started in with the attitude with Jonathan - "when am I going to see something"  "what names are included for Town Hall" blah blah blah.  I had Jonathan enlighten him - why would he see anything until we have all the info - does he think I'm going to do a mockup with no Town Hall info, then do another when he gives us the info?  So, I had Jonathan tell him that I need the logo and any people he'd like acknowledged by end of today - I'd already put his name in the booklet.  If I agree with his other names, then I'll put them in - if it's some endless litany of people I don't know or who weren't helpful, well, buh bye.

Watch Flower Drum Song.

I think the transfer is wonderful. The beautiful colors of the production design and costume exude the beautiful color designs.

The 5.1 mix is also enjoyable to listen to.

Now I am sure the armchair critics on the other sights are going to find things to bitch about but I had no complaints.

(I did see "grainy" moments during I Enjoy Being A Girl, but I think it had to do with the opticals that were used during the song. But it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the song."

A couple of quibbles.

The chapter stops are called by the various songs, but they do not take you right to it. Like the 20th century fox releases.

Why do they break up the "documentaries" the way they do. They are often repative and show the same photos and clips many times.

They also do what BK has mentioned. They talk and then a have a clip that shows what they are talking about even if the clip has no relation to what they are talking about.

I was a little disappointed with the Nick Redman commentary. I enjoyed the ones he did with Shirley Jones, but this one I felt was off the mark. I sort of wished they talk more about the filming and the changes they made for the film. Example: Wang Ta song Like a God was sort of dropped from the film. It is briefly heard spoken in beatnick hangout when Sammy take Mei Li on a tour of his haunts. They talk right through the scene.
Too much about what Nancy Kwan did after the film.

I plan to watch South Pacific the general release version to listen to what they have to say on the commentary.

Carousel's documentaries have some worthwhile things in it. One strange thing. The recreation of You're a Queer One Julie Jordan abruptly stops about halfway through. Did they run out of photos.

Also The King and I:
Rita Moreno is very noticably absent from the documentaries. As is Marni Nixon who in an early documentary talked about the dubbing process in Shall I Tell You What I Think Of You. I probably understand why Deborah Kerr is not part of it. Also why didn't they "recreate" My Lord and Master and I Have Dreamed? The songs were recorded but deleted from the film. Is it the same reason why Rita Moreno was not in the documentaries?

Other people not show Patrick Adiarte (Shown in the FLower Drum Song "documentaries" and some of the other cast seems to still be around.

Nope... I was just content.... a bit suprised and perplexed that our Democrartic Comptroller who  just got caught having state employees chauffering his seriously ill wife around  on the taxpayer's dime was  returned to office by an overwhelming majority... but overall quite content

and todays news of Rumsfeld's retirement was the icing on the cake.

I agree. I think this was a really good episode.  Were you in total shock when keith had his accident. I was totally stunned.

I believe i started watching it the summer after it first aired (season one). CTV in canada has the rights and showed it then. And i fell in love immediately. They have not shown it since, so least year my sis had to tape it for me. But luckily this year i get all the cw shows.

RE: last night's show.  I loved veronica's search for who framed her.  THe most interesting part was the end when she confronted the TA. What is up with him? He is slightly creepy. Perhaps he was trying to help her, maybe he is trying to solve the rape case. Or maybe he is the rapist.

Of course getting to the real answer always seems to take so many turns. That poor guy who works at the hotel was out of luck when veronica screwed with him (putting the stuff in the trunk).  And that radio guy/gambling guy mercer seems to be our first mis-direction towards the rapist.

Can't wait for next week.

I have been watching DVD's inflicted....I mean....sent to me by DRMBARNUM.  Actually I am enjoying them all.

First up was THE QUIET DUEL, a Kurasawa film starring Toshiro Mifune as a young doctor who is infected with syphillis when he takes off his gloves while operating on a soldier during WWII.  The rest of his life is in shambles when he calls off his six year engagement and can't really tell anyone what's wrong.  Mifune's final speech is heartbreaking.

Then WHIRLWIND - another Mifune film, but he is in a supporting role, and many years older....but there are lots of samaria soldiers and a great tornado.

Then without subtitles - LOS AMORES DE MARIETA or THE ROARING TWENTIES....not sure exactly what is going on, lots of war scenes, lots of songs and dances and some comedy.  And Ms Elvira Quintana, the tragic young actress who does a very nice job here in a comic-singing role.  She would die at 33 as a result of silicone injections she had at the beginning of her film career to make herself more voluptuous.  Stardom and death followed.

I am watching STRIKE OF THE JAGUMA right now...lots of samarai and guys in white gorilla suits and demons...AND subtitles.

THE NINE did have a wonderful episode tonight, too, as some major turning points in people's lives occurred, and we got to see a nice slice of action from the second hour of the hostage crisis. I really like the show, but I read that tonight's rating is going to be do-or-die for the show.

ABC is expecting LOST's finale to ring up a BIG rating, and if THE NINE doesn't make a move upward in the ratings, ABC is probably going to pull the plug.

Back from a nice rehearsal - got quite a bit done, about which more later.  But I surely thought I'd come home to more than 140 postings, although what's here is cherce.

Thanks, DR Vixmom!  It was a fun project.
Every year we put together a Thanksgiving basket and a Christams basket for a local church.  It is fun planning and buying and decorating it.

Question for Ask BK Day -  I'm confused by the actions of some other theater-related record labels to delay releases of CD's.  Surely there is some business reason for doing so, but I can't figure it out - unless maybe the delay creates some sort of demand for the CD that results in extra sales once the CD is finally released? Otherwise, why does it take so long for these otehr labels?  Do you have any thoughts on this?

I don't believe that I have anything to say today. My DH would say that is a blessing.

Mr. Barnum, have you ever considered interviewing Eddie Hodges?  I know he is still pretty young for you, but I would love to read a good interview with him.
You have high hopes that he will knock on your door and you two will become mug mates? Or is he just a bandit of your dreams?

I presume you're speaking of JAY - I have no idea why Mr. Yap does what he does - he's sitting on unreleased CDs for five years ago (some even further back).  Yet he keeps on recording new ones to join the pile.  Not my way of doing things - do 'em, get 'em out.  I also have the feeling that because he's not from here that he's somehow not paying AFTRA rates to the actors, and I find that infuriating, if true, as I could never get away with that.  Because IF he's paying AFTRA rates Busker Alley, despite using just a piano, would be hugely expensive.  I really wish I could find out how he's getting away with what he's getting away with because the rest of us would like to get away with it, too.

I had actually thought about him for an interview TCB! And doing a bit of research I think I found a contact e-mail for him...so who knows!

JRand56, I can't believe you have watched all of those DVDs in one day! LOL! But I do hope you had fun with them!

Did you really watch the entire Elvira Quintana movie...if so then you are a better man then I! LOL! I wish I could find something of hers that was a bit better and had subtitles.

I almost typed * sub-titties* which I guess would have been somewhat appropriate with regards to Ms. Q.

I am watching a very long motion picture on DVD, and will only be able to write about the first half in tomorrow's notes.

BK - I guess I was thinking of something like SUMMER OF '42, which I see now is JAY Records.

Interesting thoughts.  Thanks.

And we are glad of that. This place is filled with very nice people, if I may say so.
