Well, you've read the notes, you chewed on the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're thinking that the moolady lingers on.

Yesterday after work, I went directly to rehearsal.  We had to be there an hour early (6:00 pm instead of 7:00), supposedly for costume issues, but only a few people were there at 6:00.  Most people straggled in by 6:15 and all we did with costumes was make sure that each costume piece had our name on it.  That was it for the costumes. :-\ Other than that, we ran through all the songs (I'm only in two of them, and one of them is only two pages long).  Then we started running the second act after my last scene before the big ending and final song, which gives me about 30 pages of nothing to do until that last song.  The miners (the stars of the show) worked on scenes as needed as they got to them, then we did that whole last 30-page section again, without stopping.

It's fun being there and everyone is quite nice and friendly, so even while we're just sitting around and not being needed for much of the time, we can talk quietly and entertain ourselves enough that it's really not too boring to be there.  At least, I haven't been bored, yet. ;)

And that was my rehearsal last night. :)

I think Multifarious was that motion picture theatre stereo venture that had individual headphones at every seat.  It was working okay until the soundtracks to The Nun's Story and The Tingler got crossed in the mixer.

Oh yes, I was a shirt front chewer at the drive in movies for many years.

The champion movie was FORBIDDEN PLANET - by the time the movie was over, the entire front of my shirt from collar to hem was wet.  Very uncomfortable, but very comforting.

I bought the 20 Musicals Set and watched a couple of them, or rather started a couple of them after watching MOST of the movies DR MBARNUM sent me.

I was very disappointed that THE DANCING PIRATE was NOT in color as advertised and that the Technicolor sequences of GLORIFYING THE AMERICAN GIRL were in b/w as well.

From an earlier posting:

Re: Jay Recordings

Here are some of the uncomplete/sitting on the releases of the 2CD complete recordings:

Annie
Anyone Can Whistle
Brigadoon
The Dancing Years
Fiddler On the Roof
The Gig
One Touch of Venus
People Like Us
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers

BUT
to be fair he isn't the only one who does it.

Original Cast Records  has been sitting on:
Anna Karenina
Big Bang
Doll's Life*
Georgy*
Lovely Ladies Kind Gentlemen*
A Mother's Kisses
The Prince of Grand Street

All the above with the possible exception of Big Bang (which I have never heard of) are all classic bombs.

The last two closed on the road
*A combined total of 27 performances on Broadway
Anna  Kareninia ran 46 performances and I believe he has been sitting on this one since 1992!

What is this, a show or preparations for summer camp?

Yesterday was not at all fun at work, nor afterwards.

My chronic depression decided to make a comeback.  Nothing spectacular, very low-level, but the pits all the same.

I made my way through the work day, after which der B picked me up for the ride home.  (It was wet all day, not heavily but dreary all the same.)  I told him how I was feeling, and that I was in no mood to cook.  He sympathized, and said he'd be able to scrounge.

Once home, I made my way to bed.  Buster tried to be cute, laying his head on my chest and rolling on his back, which meant that he was watching me from an upside-down perspective.  I rubbed his belly, then rolled over and tried to sleep.

I'm feeling a bit better this morning.

I guess this means I'll be cooking dinner tonight.

Good morning, all!  I stayed up too late waiting for the botched Act One Finale of BARBER OF SEVILLE promised on the Letterman show.  I suspect the entire finale was performed in the studio but we got - after about 5 minutes of commercials - the last 3 minutes of stretto ensemble before the Letterman show ended. The conductor and orchestra were behind the singers so the ensemble was sloppy, there was no staging since the stretto was basically sung out to the audience, and the Metropolitan Opera should sue NBC and Letterman for malpractice and fire whatever idiot thought of getting the thing booked on Letterman.  After all the publicity about Bartlett Sher and Juan Diego Florez, I was sure it would be special.  And it was.  In a very bad way.

I started RNNING WITH SCISSORS on my flight back to Ohio.  I find this whole lawsuit by the surviving "Finch" family quite fascinating.  I cannot wait to see the film.

DR MichaelS, I cannot air my views on the unreleased studio recordings from London, but I believe every unreleased album is still unfinished - the tapes sitting in plastic bags in his home, as I recall - as he garners revenue to complete them.

Dear Friend BK, I will be home all day after 1 PM.  You have things for me?

TOD:  too little time.

Thursday morning greetings!  I fell asleep last night waiting for the opera segment on Letterman and woke up just as it was ending.  That's one of my peeves about TV programming - the constant hints, previews, and build-up that usually result in big disappointments.

Anyway, I had a nice sleep-in 'til 8am and am now getting myself together to go have a flu shot.

I'm not really sure what i think about the show's ending. A lot to digest.

I did like kate's backstory. I was somehow taken by surprise.  I also was surprised by what happened with sawyer and kate.

I don't really remember the story jack told kate when they arrived on the island. So i wasn't really sure what he was telling her to do. And does sawyer get to go?  Quite dramatic ending though.

DR S WOODY WHITE,
Sorry to hear about your depression. As part of my research into health care issues, I came across the Pain & Stress Center in San Antonio a few years ago. They do research into brain biochemistry and amino acids, offer amino acid testing (one of the few who do), and also offer a wide array of nutritional supplements. I've since interviewed one of the directors of the center, plus have spoken to a number other staff members and everyone has been both competent and helpful. They have a number of over-the-counter products for depression. Although I've not tried them personally, I have tried a product they recommend for anxiety, called L-T (it's a mix of amino acids), which I found to be very effective. It's very relaxing and has no side effects. Their website is painstresscenter.com. They provide good phone help, too. Hope you find some relief.

I guess my bad habit is addiction to TV and movies. I readily admit I spend too many hours in front of the TV, but it's comforting, entertaining, and it's what I waited my entire working life to do.

Years ago, my worst habit was biting my fingernails. I was really, really bad about it, and all my fingers looked horrific because the nails had been bitten below the quick and looked red and swollen often (how I ever played the piano with fingers like this I cannot answer). Anyway, one morning, I woke up and said to myself, "This is nasty; I'm never going to bite my nails again," and I haven't in probably 25 years.

My goodness, the place cleared out fast!

I saw and was amazed by MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY during its first release, too, and didn't see the Laughton/Gable version until decades later. So, the Brando version has always been closer to my heart despite its epic length.

I had the laserdisc for years and am hoping for a good transfer upgrade on this new DVD.

I see that Warners is releasing a high definition version of this MUTINY next week. If it was taken from a 70 mm negative, that should be awe-inspiring to view.

Maybe i'm in the minority, but i didn't think that last night's episode was that great.  I like this show alright. But it's just okay to me.

I was interested to see what happened in the bank robbery. I do really enjoy those moments and wish they showed more. I also liked the interaction between lizzie and lucas (robber).  But the stuff with the sister and scott wolf is sort of boring.

The end made me wonder who was doing the bugging. But i'm just not as invested in the characters as i should be.

Watched the second of the 1960s East German westerns last night (Sons of Great Bear)...it was a better movie, story wise, then the Chingachgook one, but the Indians were far too overdressed which made it somewhat less enjoyable. Still, it had some very good scenes and I highly recommend this set of films (again).

What a joy to see this excellent film looking and (especially) sounding so good. That Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on the "Love Look Away" ballet had me swooning.

And for picture quality, the scene in the garden where "You Are Beautiful" is sung was stunning in sharpness, color, and detail. It looked unbelievably lush.

There is a guy over at the Home Theater Forum in the FLOWER DRUM SONG thread who keeps saying over and over that Jack Soo's singing voice is way off pitch through all of his singing, and that it's so bad he ruins the movie for him.

I have been watching FLOWER DRUM SONG for years and years, had the soundtrack album on LP and (recently) CD, and Jack Soo's singing has never remotely sounded flat to me. Oh, occasionally, he might talk a note or two instead of singing them, but I just don't hear off pitch singing with him.

Is my inner tuning fork off or is this guy off base? He's been so insistent about it that I just haven't argued with him other than to say it sounds fine to me, but he remains firm on saying Soo can't sing AT ALL!

After FLOWER DRUM SONG was over, rather than watching special features (probably saving them for the weekend), I put in THE KING AND I since we had been talking about it earlier in the week.

Yes, the new anamorphic transfer is LEAGUES ahead of any previous Region 1 DVD, laserdisc, or tape release. Gorgeous is not the word.

What's more, I saw colors today I had never seen before in the clothes. That bluish purple tunic that Yul Brynner wears for a good portion of the first half of the film, I had never seen green in it before. Today, I saw that green is a prominent color in the fabric. Details in Anna's gowns were also a lot more noticeable now than they were in the previous DVD and laserdisc releases.

Rather than listen to the soundtrack (which seemed to be the same as on the last DVD), I turned on the commentary by Richard Barrios and Michael Portantiere. It's kind of a rambling, free association kind of dialogue between the two of them. Not bad but not especially revealing anything (yet) that I didn't already know.

I got through "Something Wonderful" before shutting everything off, but I'll pick back up with it when I go back downstairs later.

I've never found it terribly off...anyway, I've always found it more in character for Sammy to not sound pretty.  The guy may have perfect pitch... sometimes it's more of a curse than a blessing, I've heard. But if that were the case, you'd think the guy could say it once & leave it at that. Maybe he doesn't like Soo outside of FDS?

Well, good, at least I'm not alone in thinking Soo's vocals are AOK.

Reading this guy's rants is really the first time I've ever read anyone say anything negative about Jack Soo's performance.

POTENTIAL GROSS-OUT QUIRKY HABIT AHEAD

Actually, is picking scabs a quirky habit?  Both in conversation and literally.  :)

When I mention that I tend to do this, people tell me they do it, too, or have friends who do it becuase they think it helps the healing process for a scab.  So if so many people do it, while it may be gross, is it quirky?

Glory be! My DVDs arrived today, so, of course, FLOWER DRUM SONG was the first thing in the player.

I thought I felt the northern hemisphere heave a sigh of relief!

Why no love for Niki on the board? I for one love Niki. Both of her.

She's not bad, in and of herself, but her story arc is the least interesting to me...and it seems to get the most air time.

DR Rodzinski, I'm not exactly sure why nobody here likes niki (HEROES).  I think maybe it's because of the first couple of episodes where she drove to dump the body.

It just wasn't interesting. Especially compared to the other stories.

I love her son micah though.

I actually like Niki.  At first, I had no idea what her "power" was, but now that it's been revealed, she definitely seems like someone who can end up being a really bad "bad guy."  But she does seem to do what she does for good reasons, so maybe they'll have her be part of the good guys.  Either way, she's certainly someone you really should have on your side.

My quirky habit is if I eat at a place that has paper napkins, I have to take an extra one with me when I leave the restaurant. I just noticed this about me in the last couple years.

I've been doing this for 20 years (and I don't take just one)!  I started collecting napkins because, shortly after I started going to Western Washington University in Bellingham (up north, near the US/Canadian border), the defrost stopped working in my '76 Super Beetle.  There were times that I actually needed to scrape off the ice from the inside of my windshield!  And I also used the napkins to wipe off any condensation that would build up.  Even after getting newer cars, I still take napkins and stash them in my glove compartment...you never know when you might need a napkin. ;)

Edisaurus-
Very interesting your post regarding LeFont etc. And Daughters of the Dust! I was shown that movie in an undergrad class at the U of Georgia. I think I had to write a paper on it.

I work with producers who studied that film in college. Do you know how old that makes me feel? That us why my name is Edisaurus! (I went to UGA, too!)

DOD was one of many films I worked on with Julie Dash. She's done some TV movies since then, but because I'm not a union editor, we've never gotten to work together on those. So the union basically put an end to a wonderful, collaborative relationship. I mean, we're still friends, but I used to practically live at her house and her daughter called me "mommy".  We went through a lot together during those years.

I am proud that DOD was one of the films selected for the National Film Registry and that it won a prize when we took it to  Sundance. Julie has a lot of good films waiting to be made, so I hope we'll get to work together again one day!

My bad habit---when I'm having a stressful edit, I run my fingers through my hair and pull on it---sort of a scalp massage (I don't really pull my hair out over this stuff) or a way to get blood flowing to my brain.

When producers who know me well walk into the edit room and see my hair almost standing on end like Buckwheat, they address me in a calm, subdued tone of voice.

Not me...I'm working.  All the libraries are closed on Saturday, though.  But since I don't normally work on Saturday (except to make up time that I missed earlier in the week), I can 1) take a day off at some other time within this pay period, 2) get paid for the 8 hours in addition to my normal paycheck, or 3) add 8 hours to my normal monthly vacation accrual.  I plan to add the extra hours to my vacation time, which I've been using way too much over the last couple of months.

That’s tough, however, not affording medication might be a good thing.  While some people have been saved by it I know others whose symptoms became dangerously aggravated, resulting in more medication.

I hope you are getting plenty of exercise, sleep & take advantage of friends & family when you need them.

B&B? Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Haven't seen it. Bed and Breakfast, yes.

And you wouldn't believe how many dinner invitations and offers of company editors get from actors who want to hang out at the editing room to get a peek at their scenes or maybe buddy up in the hopes that they'll receive favorable treatment from those with the scissors. Could this be why my most recent films have main characters that are DEAD?

I also found out today that the previous owners of my house never put up Christmas decorations.  That's really a shocker because they even had "Jesus is the light of the world" light switch plates. I also can't believe it because this house is all set for decorations. They have little hooks for lights all around the garage doors and electric outlets in several places outside. Paul has volunteered to help me decorate. I'm going to do the outside but not the inside this year.

And of course the TOD reminds ME of the I LOVE LUCY episode that takes place in California - when the foursome starts discussing the annoying habits of each other:

Ricky drums his fingers on the table...Lucy stirs her coffee over and over....Ethel makes noise when she eats...and Fred jingles his keys in his pocket.

Ricky:  Breakfas' wooden be breakfas' without you pounding out the anvil chorus on your coffee cup.

Fred:  When you eat, it sounds like a cow pulling its foot out of the mud.

Ethel:  For 20 years I felt like I was married to the Good Humor Man.

Lucy:  Of course I'm used to it now, but it used to drive me crazy....

And later:

Ricky:  You are deliberately NOT stirring your coffee.

Ethel:  I need the keys to the car, unless you need them to play a tune.

Fred:  How about a couple of choruses of Cow Cow Boogie?

Written, directed, played, costumed, and photographed to perfection.

Ladies and gentlemen:  I Love Lucy.

I finished the eveing watching Wednesday night's CSI: NY. A strange case of a paintball player's murder combined with black cocaine, moon rocks, and a bear trap.

Also a very sad confrontation with Mac and a young man and the beginnings of some inner-office friction between Mac and Flack.

The best episode of the season thus far.

As I went to the DVR menu to retrieve CSI: NY, I noticed that I had forgotten to set the DVR to record CSI tonight. I know it'll be rerun within months of its initial airing tonight, but it irritates me to do stupid things like this.

Still have three hours of shows recorded tonight to watch tomorrow.

I have a favor:

For anyone who bought the new King and I, can you go to 110:11 into the film (Shall We Dance) have the "Singalong Subtitles" on and tell me if your DVD jumps around. It seems to only happen when the "Singalong Subtitles" are visible. No other subtitles and it doesn't matter what audio track you are listening to.

Interesting sidelight:

I was listen to the music only audio and what beautiful orcherstrated music. Only some songs can you hear the singers (We Kiss In a Shadow) or chorus (but not principals as in the Act One Finale or May It Ever Be So Humble crossover)

Also sometimes you hear a studio voice announcing what take number it was after the end of the music!!!

If no one takes you up on this tonight, DR Michael, I can do it tomorrow.

I happened to catch SHARK tonight, and was reduced to tears by the end, even through all the contrived plot machinations.  The hokey aspects of it remind me of MATLOCK, though, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for leading me to that Australian theater site, Tom.  That wasn't the specific theater (I think?), but it led me to a similar listing for the theater i was asking about.

Pleased to help DR FJL.  Just wish the theatre involved was on the East Coast instead.

That’s tough, however, not affording medication might be a good thing.  While some people have been saved by it I know others whose symptoms became dangerously aggravated, resulting in more medication.

I hope you are getting plenty of exercise, sleep & take advantage of friends & family when you need them.

Actually, my cocktail costs more/month than the previous copay on my meds & doesn't work as well. Lots of sleep, yes, exercise no... probably cos I just don't have the energy or motivation to do more than go to work & come home. Also, you can't get take much more advantage of your family than moving back in w/ your mother.

But anyhoo....

Now back to your regularly scheduled mirth & merriment.

My sister did not have insurance and Merck provided her depression medicine free through some program.  I can find out the details if anyone is interested.  Just took a fax from her physician confirming the necessity of said medicine.
Oh yeah, Pfizer (makes Zoloft-what I took) does the same. The problem w/ those programs is you have to have a prescription & the doc who did that for me was at my old college.

Wonderful - I was watching and Woody interrupted at the very end and I missed the whole point of the show - but I knew you would be at the ready to help :'(

Finally back from rehearsal and dinner - I never got to the Gardenia because I had a little situation at rehearsal to deal with - all is well.

UGLY BETTY had a marvelous episode tonight filled with laughter and family and sexy goings-on. Even Justin had a great line late in the show.

I haven't watched last week's episodes of "Ugly Betty" or "Grey's Anatomy."  I just watched last week's "Six Degrees."  Tomorrow night, I am working concessions for a string quartet.  After that will be a party for the cast of Cannibal, at the director's house.

Tonight at rehearsals, we got through the entire show...and off book!  A few people (including me) called for lines, but we all got through it!  Now, it's just a matter of running it until it's perfect! :D
