Title: THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ
Post by: bk on November 10, 2006, 12:53:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that this is a momentous day, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been trying to come home since November of 2001 - maybe this year will be the charm.

And thanks, BK, for a place to come...

Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Here's the TV version of the song (click on the lyrics for a midi file!):

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

In case anyone might have missed my post from yesterday.

I have a favor:

For anyone who bought the new King and I, can you go to 110:11 into the film (Shall We Dance) have the "Singalong Subtitles" on and tell me if your DVD jumps around. It seems to only happen when the "Singalong Subtitles" are visible. No other subtitles and it doesn't matter what audio track you are listening to.

Good morning, all!  I have another day filled with activity, a few hours i Toyland, a trip to sew up my IRS situation (oy! don't ask), an afternoon with The Brain, and an evening seeing my friend Douglas Carter Beane'snew comedy THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED.  Three weeks from today, I fly to Los Angeles to work on The Brain!

Yesterday, I was hardly online: I finished up the debris from my week's absence: laundry, throwing out cartons and junk from a week's worth of mail, trying to figure out this new DVD player and its remote control, some revisions on the BABES IN TOYLAND reports initiated by an eBay purchase of pages from several 1905 Appleton, Wisconsin, issues of the Appleton Century newspaper dealing with the 2nd-class tour (equivalent to a bus & truck tour).  All I haven't done is confront the pile of magazines and catalogs.  I even got some work in on The Brain!

DR MattH, re Jack Soo:  I don't think he's singing flat; he seems more to be an actor with little singing technique and a voice not particularly pretty. He doesn't seem to be aware of how to focus a tone at times, but it's so right for the character he plays.  I think he's super and I love what he does much more than the slicker singing of Larry Blyden on the OBC.

Dear Friend BK, I sent you an email this morning; I'll be curious about your decision.

TOD:  Who's got time for anything but the VCR?

I did take the new CD of WHITE CHRISTMAS to Toyland yesterday, and I love it.  Larry Blank makes me want to kill him from jealousy, his work is so goof.  DR MBarnum, your new friend Brian D'Arcy James is quite wonderful as well.

I've been looking for White Christmas. I haven't come across it yet.

I'm listening to Accu Radio right now and they are playing Show Off from Drowsy Chaperone.

I had a very nice time last night at our 50th Anniversary celebration. I'm sure a nice time will also be had on December 12th when we have our 50th Anniversary Holiday Party. This year, because it's the 50th Anniversary, we get to bring a spouse or a guest so Anthony will get to see me receive my 15th Anniversary Clock.

Happy Anniversary to Mr. Kimmel and a big virtual hug to all our posters

TOD:

DVD - From the Terrace, nice adaptation of the John O'Hara book with a fine Elmer Bernstein score and some nice performances.  The photography and costumes are terrific as well.  Recommended for lovers of high class SOAP.

VCR:  SPARTACUS

CD:  A present from DRMBARNUM Japanese girl singers with songs from the '60's.  Yes, I can now hear "Where the Boys Are" and "Pineapple Princess" in Japanese, with phonetic versions of "Lipstick on your Collar" and "Hey, Paula" and many many more.  Domo arigato.

TOD...

DVR - last Wednesday's Lost, since I was so out of it that night.  We'll probably watch it on Saturday.

DVD - I haven't sat down to watch Cars yet, other than the first ten minutes or so.  The arrogance of lead car Lightning McQueen is a turn-off, though.

And der Brucer bought a whole stack of DVDs for $3 each, stuff from cable television I think.

BOOKS - I'm hoping to savor a couple of stories from a Dirty Book real soon.

And I've been taking an interesting book called The Omnivore's Dilemma with me to work, propping it up next to my register and getting lots of questions as to what it's about.  Well, it's about food chains, about where our food really comes from.  For example, much of the processed food we eat can trace it's roots back to corn.  (Some of the customers get really interested at this point, and others start to glaze over like the doughnuts our bakery sells.  But this book has been getting more comments than any other since I was reading New York City Food, but that one had pictures.)

Friday morning greetings!  Today's the second of my five days off and it's been quite odd already.

Yesterday, I visited my doctor for a flu shot and he ordered some routine fasting blood testing, which I planned to do this morning and then meet a friend for breakfast.  The rest of the day yesterday I spent winding down after a very hectic several weeks and by 9:30pm could hardly stay awake, so I went to bed.  The phone woke me about 10:45 - my mother-in-law's neighbor telling me MiL was sick and what should she do?  Well, Richard is still in Wisconsin and I'm quite hesitant to assume responsibility for his mother, so I called his older brother and his daughter and they met the ambulance at the hospital.

Grandma was admitted about 5am; I was there by 7:30, stayed until the doctor came and left, then I went downstairs to have my test, and am now home tanking up on coffee.  Our doctor seems to think MiL's problem is not life-threatening, which is good, but she'll be in the hospital for a few days.  In the meantime, my friend called to cancel our breakfast date, because she'd had something come up.

My mother and I have plans this afternoon to do some errands and attend the grand opening of a new Graeter's ice cream shop.

Brokeback Mountain
High School Musical
Little Manhattan
Mrs. Henderson Presents

After my Legally Blonde double feature from Netflix, I watched Little Manhattan before crashing last night.

Any Poliakoff fans out there?

YES! Berné Poliakoff---she's one of my best friends!

I think many DR's would love their band, Cowboy Envy. They are a female trio who sings Songs of the Pioneers songs in tight harmony, a la The Andrews Sisters.

http://www.cowboyenvy.com/

You can check out a one hour performance at the Kennedy Center (with a rough mix that gets better as the show goes on. The camera person discovers the zoom and pan function in the middle of the 2nd song.). Berné is "Frenchy" because her regular job is singing in a French Restaurant.

Enjoy!

It is gone for good from Thursday nights. MEN IN TREES moves into this time slot the last Thursday of November.

ABC said SIX DEGREES will return in January to play out its already filmed episodes, but often things like this are announced, and then the show never returns, or returns for one episode and then is gone.

Hello all!

Gee, HHW's anniversary is the same day as my Mom's birthday--two reasons to celebrate!   ;D

Poor Mom didn't get a very good Birthday present.  She fell last Friday and broke a rib.  We spent hours at the hospital and I've been frantic with worry about her.

We go back to the doctor today.   A new doctor, I might add.  I duked it out with Humana and had her changed to a new center.

I hope that everyone here is doing well.  I've missed you.

Thank you ever so much for the lovely photo CD's DR TomovOz!  I have to ask what kind of camera did you use?  The pictures are wonderful!

I am going to use some of them as screen savers.

Yes, singingnymph - this site debuted on the ninth of November, which was on a Friday back in 2001.  I debated whether to do the anniversary yesterday or today, then forgot that it WAS our anniversary when I wrote yesterday's notes, but it still worked out fine.

~~~VIBES FOR DANISE'S MOTHER!!~~~
Yesterday, I visited my doctor for a flu shot and he ordered some routine fasting blood testing, which I planned to do this morning and then meet a friend for breakfast.  The rest of the day yesterday I spent winding down after a very hectic several weeks and by 9:30pm could hardly stay awake, so I went to bed.  The phone woke me about 10:45 - my mother-in-law's neighbor telling me MiL was sick and what should she do?  Well, Richard is still in Wisconsin and I'm quite hesitant to assume responsibility for his mother, so I called his older brother and his daughter and they met the ambulance at the hospital.
Grandma was admitted about 5am; I was there by 7:30, stayed until the doctor came and left, then I went downstairs to have my test, and am now home tanking up on coffee.  Our doctor seems to think MiL's problem is not life-threatening, which is good, but she'll be in the hospital for a few days.
DR Ginny, tell Harriet that these bids for attention will kill her before her actual 90th birthday!
I am going to use some of them as screen savers.
Can someone please enlighten me - where in tarnation is dear reader Jose?  Did he go off in a huff - did I miss that?  Or is this just another of his many sabbaticals.  And where is Jed and Ann?  Most unseemly.
I miss DRs Jed and Ann quite a lot, but I know no reason for their absence.  As to DR Jose, it was my impression that he would be back amongst us.  I hope to see him on Monday.
I was going to post a link to the annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival's schedule, but it's a pdf file and jammed up our computer, so I think posting a link would be rude.
But the festival is going on this weekend.
So much for living in a podunk backwater.   :o
Actually, the computer doesn't "jam up" it's just a big job for a little fellow. The link is a 67 Page graphic-intensive .pdf file that needs to be downloaded to our Adobe Reader via a dial-up link - you click on the link then go do lunch! (Once the job is done, I can save the file to our HD and then gain ready access.
A note of the Festival:
Quote
An estimated 16,000 people attended the Rehoboth Beach Film Society's annual festival last year, a number which is expected to be matched or exceeded this year.
More than 100 films from 29 countries will be presented, which is more than twice as many as were screened at the inaugural festival. A number of directors and producers will be on hand to answer questions from audiences following screenings.
In addition to the opening and closing galas, a number of activities will occur in conjunction with the festival, including wine and beer tastings, massage services, raffles and a student film focus series.
...
Four of the movies are Sundance Film Festival award winners: "A Silent Love," about a study of relationships facing language barriers; "Last Life in the Universe," in which a depressed man learns to embrace life; "Love in Thoughts," about teenage love; and "Touch of Pink," which envisions the ghost of Cary Grant helping a gay man "straighten up" for his mother.
Among the documentaries being presented are "American Beer" and "Beauty Academy of Kabul." "American Beer" follows the exploits of five beer-loving New Yorkers who crossed the country in 2002 to visit microbreweries including coastal Sussex County's own Dogfish Head. "Beauty Academy of Kabul" chronicles the story of three Afghani women who fled to America to avoid the Taliban, but returned in 2002 to open Kabul's first beauty school. The film is being dedicated to former Rehoboth Beach Film Society board member Lori Phillips, who died in April.
Now I need to wrestle with some choices - a tough job for someone who generally avoids films with sub-titles!
Film Festival Option #1
20 CENTIMETERS
Quote
An Almodóvarian musical with the flair and attitude of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and the catchy music of Queen, Madonna and Dusty Springfield; this Spanish confection is one of the most inventive and entertaining movies of the year.
Enter the world of Marieta/Adolfo (Mónica Cervera)—a narcoleptic, pre-op transsexual prostitute who longs to get rid of eight inches of equipment that separates her from being the glamorous person she longs to be.
When she accidentally falls asleep, usually during the most inopportune moments, Marieta’s dreams become lavish and colorful musical numbers, where—as a “real woman”—she can sing in Spanish and English.
Surrounded by her “family,” which includes Ice Box (Rossy de Palma of Almodóvar fame) and Tomás, an aspiring cellist who happens to be a dwarf, Marieta finds support among her chaotic and often comical street life. But when she meets a man known only as “the fruit stocker,” (the hunky Spanish pop singer Pablo Puyol) whose buttocks are compared to a “ripe peach,” it is love at first sight and spunky Marieta is caught between a rock and a hard place: true love or her true self. Shot in eye-popping Cinemascope and taking inspiration from Bob Fosse, Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers and even pop diva Madonna, director Ramón Salazar has crafted a film that will leave you humming as you exit the theater and contemplating your next costume for Halloween.
Dir. Ramón Salazar, 2005, Spain, 35mm,113 minutes.
In Spanish with English subtitles.
Probably isn't boring :)
Film Festival - Canine Options:
THE CAVE OF THE YELLOW DOG
Quote
"The German-Mongolian co-production’s spare storytelling…
delivers an affectionate but clear-eyed portrait
of the powerful connection between humans and animals living close to the earth. This is a film that is uplifting and spiritual without resorting to sappiness or dogma.”
—Hollywood Reporter
A Mongolian nomad family find themselves in disagreement when the oldest daughter, Nansal, finds a small dog and brings it home. Believing that it is responsible for attacking his sheep, her father refuses to allow her to keep it. When the family moves on, Nansal is left with the dilemma of whether to defy her father or take Zochor (or ‘Spot’ in English) with them. Oscar- nominated director Byambasuren’s follow up to the hugely successful The Story of the Weeping Camel is a thought provoking mix of documentary and drama.
Featuring a real life family and following much of their daily existence, this is combined with a narrative structure that acts as a framework for the film. The naturalistic pace reflects the quiet, often uneventful world that the family inhabits but this underlines a still beauty that is realized throughout. In the spirit of early Robert Flaherty films, The Cave of the Yellow Dog could be considered a documentary that is posing as fiction, or fiction in the guise of documentary.
Either way, the film is an absolute gem that is sure to
delight audiences.
Dir. Byambasuren Davaa, 2006, Germany & Mongolia,
35mm, 93 minutes. In Mongolian with English subtitles.
or
Lassie
Quote
“Lassie has come home again to teach another generation about loyalty, determination and love.” —Reuters
When Yorkshire coalminer Sam Carraclough loses his
job during the 1930s depression, he and his supportive
wife are left with no option but to start selling their
possessions. The last straw for their young son is the
heart wrenching sale of the family’s beloved rough collie
to a wealthy Scottish Duke (Peter O’Toole, no less), who
lives a few miles away. After several attempts to escape
from under the nose of the Duke’s cruel kennelman, Lassie is finally taken up to Scotland, where she stays cooped up until the opportunity arises for her to bolt once again.
This time, however, the journey home is a lot more
adventurous…
Shot amid the lush countryside of Scotland, Ireland and
the Isle of Man, Charles Sturridge’s adaptation addresses many of Knight’s original concerns, especially that of Britain’s class structure (hence the opening juxtaposition of wealthy red-coated huntsmen seen tracking a fox through the lead characters’ poor, working-class village).
With top notch performances, excellent cinematography
and, despite the swooning strings, it’s not too sentimental.
However, you might still wish to take a hanky with you—
just in case.
Dir, Charles Sturridge, 2006, US/Ireland, 100 mins.
Film Festival - the Kimmel Option :)
DREAMSHIP SURPRISE: PERIOD 1
Quote
An irreverent send-up of every sci-fi blockbuster from Star Wars to Star Trek, Dreamship Surprise: Period 1 became the highest-grossing German film of all time and second only to Lord of The Rings: Return Of The King. Acquiring comedy awards across Europe, this film is light, hilarious, and offers good-natured fun. Space in the year 2304, in a UFO that crash-landed in the Nevada desert 300 years ago,
mankind found the scientific guidelines which were used
to colonize Mars half a century later. Now the descendants of the first colonists are on their way back to Earth. Led by their unbelievably wicked Regulator Rogul and his unbelievably even more unbelievably wicked disciple Jens Maul, they are up to no good. In fact, the Martians are planning to subjugate the blue planet to the red one.
With a huge array of spaceships, a conquest of Earth
seems imminent. And only the crazy (and very few) crew
of Dreamship Surprise can ‘help’ Captain Kork, engineer
Shrotty and first officer Mr. Spuck. But instead of fighting
intergalactic crime, they’re busy with their choreography
for the upcoming ‘Miss Waikiki Pageant’. With the help of
the space cowboy and taxi pilot Rock (hunky Til Schweiger) they set out to save the earth from invasion and quite possibly from themselves.
Dir. Michael Bully Herbig, 2005, Germany, 35mm, 87 mins.
In German with English subtitles.
Not really understanding the difference between regular CInemascope and CInemascope 55, I quite enjoyed this little featurette. DR Michael Shayne:
I did go back to disc 1 in THE KING AND I set and played "Shall We Dance" with the singalong activated. Began fine but at the point where you indicated, it did indeed start jumping around and sputtering. Doesn't happen if you're just watching the film, but with that supplement turned on, my Sony player couldn't handle it. I didn't try it in any other players I have here, but I suspect it would have trouble in all of them.
Knowing that the Deep Discount sale is going on, I put my SOUND OF MUSIC old DVD in the upconversion player once again to decide if I wanted to spend the few bucks on getting the newer issue of the film. I watched about 15 minutes of the movie, and I decided that the copy I have is just fine. Supposedly the edge enhancement is very bothersome for people who have front projection systems that throw the image on a 100" screen, but on my TV, I don't notice the edge enhancement, and it plays just fine. So no upgrade there.
Next, I watched SMALLVILLE, an excellent episode with some real drama among the various characters.
I think adding The Green Arrow to the show this season has been a real shot in the arm for the whole show. There's more at stake for Clark now, and there's a superhero who can give him some things to think about. Clark can reciprocate in the morals department for Green Arrow/Oliver, too.
After that (I can leave after intermission is over...which I will ;)), the director of Cannibal:  The Musical is having a party at her house.  I wasn't able to go to the first one shortly after we started rehearsal, because it was the night that I went to Tacoma to meet TCB, Jed, Ann, Tomovoz and Colin (and I'd choose that again)!
We had a very productive day.  Mom and I are very, very, very pleased with the new doctor.  She spent over 2 hours with us and didn't make us feel like we were wasting her time. It might be a bit farther drive but it is well worth it.
LOS ANGELES (Nov. 10) - Jack Palance, the craggy-faced menace in "Shane," "Sudden Fear" and other films who turned to comedy at 70 with his Oscar-winning self-parody in "City Slickers," died Friday.
Palance died of natural causes at his home in Montecito, Calif., surrounded by family, said spokesman Dick Guttman. He was 85, according to Associated Press records, but his family gave his age as 87
Just spent several hundred on the DDD sale, including the new Brando box set.  Is MOTB the roadshow version, with the "prequel" (20 years after) and sequel, or the usual edited version?
It's the roadshow version, but no prologue or epilogue as they were never part of the film as shown during its roadshow engagements (they were removed prior to the film's opening, hence have never been part of any print - they were shown for the first and only time when the film had its original network premiere).
Title: Re:THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ
Post by: Matt H. on November 10, 2006, 09:01:24 PM
The movie we watched was MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III. Well, it certainly poured on the action sequences, and they were all pretty spectacular. Very James Bondian/ALIAS level stuff, but I think of MI as something that should be more intellectual action (like the break-in of CIA headquarters in the first one) rather than the blow-up/crash and bang stuff that every other action movie has. So, that was a bit disappointing.
But, with ALIAS' J.J. Abrams at the helm, I bought into the world and tried to enjoy it, and I did until we got to the final sequence, and then all the careful set-ups just fell apart with a clock ticking and Ethan explaining to his wife how to fire a gun, and rigging up a defib device while telling his wife he loved her. Nope, lost me there.
The transfer was a HUGE disappointment. The color looked very plugged up to me, too much contrast, and often soft (was Cruise trying to hide his age a bit?). And during the Vatican sequences there was so much moire on the walls and steps that I knew the film had been transferred at a very low bit rate.
So, I'd rank this one ahead of MI: II but in my mind not as good as the first one. The transfer on DVD was by far the worst of the three. (I read some reviews of the HD-DVD version, and they weren't at all positive either.)
Had a very interesting and good assembling the pieces rehearsal today - I think everyone started to get a sense of the shape and structure of the show, and its look, and I went much more smoothly than I might have imagined.  And now we've got four weeks to hone and perfect it.
We also watched the "Making of" documentary. Pretty good overview of the entire filmmaking design with key people on the production team commenting on the various locales. Everyone, of course, praised Tom Cruise to the skies. Of course, as the producer, he WAS their boss, so I guess they HAD to (and he probably was very good and very professional; it's just that the gushing was very extreme in this documentary.)
Title: Re:THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ
Post by: Matt H. on November 10, 2006, 09:06:49 PM
Perhaps being spoiled by seeing the superlative transfers of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN and earlier today THE KING AND I made MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III look weak in comparison.
But why shouldn't a movie that's only six months old look better than movies that are 50 years old? And MI: III didn't.
"If you have to work, it's best if you enjoy what you're doing. When you don't, it really makes life not worth living."
This is an interesting thought. So many people have jobs they hate, and need those jobs to support themselves.  But they get through their 9 to 5 or whichever hours, and then go home to their life outside of that. But the thought that HAVING to do something you don't like doing 40 hours a week makes life not worth living is a fascinating concept to me.
I certainly remember tax seasons where I had to work a minimum of 55 hours a week and feeling like life was just unbearable.  I like the work in reasonable doses, though, but at 55 hours a week of the same thing during tax seasons, i approached the day with dread.  But at least i knew that tax seasons had endings and reprieves.
Two Ultravox factoids: They opened LIVE AID, as the first act in London.
And Midge Ure co-authored the "Do They Know It's Christmas" song.
I was just curious as to how it would hold up knowing the big twist and socko punch line.  And it just felt even more impressive on the second go-round.  As I believe has been discussed on here, it's a natural for the stage, but then I thought so is "Your Worst Nightmare" which might work well on either stage or screen.  And both have the unifying concept of traveling away from home - maybe there's a theatrical evening in two (or maybe three) stories under an umbrella like Out of Town or Hitting The Road or Away from Home.  I'm probably saying  things you've already thought of, but my mind is abubble (is that a word?) with the theatrical possibilities.
singingnyph, what part of California do currently live in?  Is this where you grew up?
Yup, Cali girl, born & bred. Lived in the Fresburg (Fresno) area most of my life, except for a 3 year stint in the SFV when I went to CSUN.
I just got home from seeing Borat.
Tacky & tasteless, but pretty funny. Not $9.50 worth of funny, but Dad was paying, so it's all good. Spending time with Dad was worth it & one of my cousins was with us too.
Speaking of theatrical possibilities, and in this case unfortunately unrealized promise of a very sweet, affecting basic story, we saw MIMI LE DUCK tonight, thoroughly watchable and with a second act that surprisingly comes together after a dramatrugically diffuse and unfocused first act.  Eartha Kitt is a joy to behold, though.  The theatre is not freindly to autograph seekers, and different people in the theater give different stories as to where the stage door is; otherwise, the fans would have been mobbing to see Eartha Kitt and instead there was a mere small gaggle waiting.  But maybe Ms. Kitt prefers it that way???  (We were waiting to see a friend who is in the show.)
Bonnie Tyler's "It's A Heartache," is my current anthem when it comes to relationships.
"Pogue's Underpants will be off display after Sunday.  Folks have today or tomorrow to take a gander."
Perhaps, but the more cultured among us have saved the classic Shakepeare photo to our hard drives.
"Reap the Wild Wind" did get some airplay here. MBarnum, we may have discussed this before, but YOU are the only person I know who knows of China Crisis.
Count me, too! I know all these bands. I don't know when you lived in Georgia, but I was the writer/producer and then program director for the the Video Music Channel from its Atlanta inception in 1982 through 1985, when labels decided to start charging for videos. There went our free programming! We were pre-MTV as a satellite cable service, then when I joined, we broadcast live on 4 Atlanta cable networks and then moved to UHF broacast at channel 69.
We interviewed hundreds of bands, and I always got free concert tickets, albums (this was before CD's!) and promo stuff. It was one of the most fun jobs I ever had, (the pay was terrible, of course) until I was able to start picking and choosing my editing jobs and getting a group of clients I liked.
DR Vixmom---life's too short to be doing a job you hate. Good for you for taking charge of your life, and how lucky you are to have a partner who supports that!
Socko sounds like a good name for a sock puppet, too.
Hmmmm...Sacco and Vanzetti as sock puppets---that's got me thinking!
FJL, have you read all the stories yet, or just the ones you've mentioned?
